by South Florida artist Cangshu Gran, titled “Mercury Express” featuring artworks created between 2016 and 2019.

“This body of work is comprised of sixteen oil glaze paintings on canvas, ranging in size from 16 x 16 inches to 36 x 48 inches. These paintings demonstrate, through subjective color and the application of misty layers of luminous paint, my residence on the edge of moving to the future and looking to the past.

Through imagination my paintings express a longing for connections and offer glimpses of happiness tinted with a pervasive overcast of melancholy. “Mercury Express” is a visual expression of what I consider to be ‘Kitsch’, ‘Sentimental’ and ‘Adventurous’. Through this work I salvage and renew the child-like wonder that managed to survive into my adulthood. Through the positioning of remembered objects in imaginary landscapes, Mercury Express recalls and explores my childhood memories, ideas and aspirations to reclaim the wonder I have lost as an adult.”

Can Kissing Lead to Cavities?

What is a cavity? A cavity is a hole in a tooth that forms because of untreated tooth decay. A cavity can affect the hard tissues (enamel, dentin and cementum) and a tooth’s soft tissue (pulp). Cavities start small but gradually grow if left untreated.

Since tooth decay does not always cause pain, cavity progression can go unnoticed.

However, the problem is more severe once the decay reaches the teeth and gums.

DO TOOTH CAVITIES SPREAD? It may be surprising to learn that tooth cavities spread and are contagious. Similar to catching a cold sore, you can also catch a cavity by swapping spit. Cavities are usually caused by sugar buildup that decays teeth. However, studies have shown that cavities can be transmitted through close contact with another person with poor oral hygiene. Indeed, studies have found that one person can develop a cavity on their tooth via kissing. This was found by evaluating kissing couples.

The precursors to cavities ride it out on the bacteria contained in saliva. So, when two people are kissing with vigor, they can transmit harmful bacteria to one another. The same goes for mothers that get close to their babies — they can spread a tooth cavity to the child. In fact, infants and children are particularly vulnerable to cavity-causing bacteria. In most cases

356-Unit Residential Project at Pompano Citi Centre Continues to Advance Plans are moving forward to build a gated 356-unit residential development on a portion of property at Pompano Citi Centre, the shopping center located at the

The city’s Development Review Committee has reviewed a site plan

The City adopted a land use plan amendment in October 2021 to change the land use designation of the project site from commercial to residential.

According to the site plan, the proposed development will consist of eight 4-story residential buildings featuring studio, one-, two-, and threebedroom units. Amenities include a private clubhouse and pool, a playground area and a small park.

The developer intends to reserve 15% of the residential units for affordable housing in the moderate-income range.

The city’s municipal golf course borders the project site to the south and west.

The residential development would be fenced, with pedestrian access points to the shopping center and the multi-use trail that runs along the golf course perimeter.

Traffic Conditions on Atlantic Boulevard and Dixie Highway Corridor Continue to Improve After months of analyzing the new traffic pattern proposed for the Atlantic Boulevard and Dixie Highway corridor, Paul Kissinger of Kissinger Design, a consultant hired by the city, and Joaquin Vargas, the city’s consultant traffic engineer, said they have achieved their goal of improving the traffic flow.

Last October, when the pilot program for the new traffic pattern was implemented, Kissinger and Vargas began working to resolve the resulting traffic congestion – adjusting the traffic pattern and traffic signalization, and collecting data.

Travel-time comparisons for Atlantic Boulevard during the morning and afternoon peak periods, in both the eastbound and westbound directions, between NE 11th Avenue and NW Sixth Avenue, showed the problem was westbound traffic from Cypress Road to Dixie Highway during the afternoon peak period.

“We’ve got that solved,” said Kissinger.

The latest tests show that only about 2:30 minutes were added to the travel time for westbound traffic during afternoon rush hour (4pm6pm), and virtually no additional time for the other hours of the day.

“The sitting city commission held our feet to the fire to make it better, and we did,” said Kissinger.

Data available for June 2019 showed an average travel time of 3:03 minutes on westbound Atlantic Boulevard during afternoon rush hour. In October 2021, just after plastic delineator posts were

installed to establish the new traffic pattern, the average travel time jumped to 9:30 minutes. In February 2022, it dropped to 7:43 minutes.

In March 2022, the average travel time dropped to 5:51 minutes.

During that test, there was one more Brightline train interruption than in the June 2019 test. In March 2022, from 6pm to 7pm (post afternoon peak hour), the travel time dropped to 3:36 minutes.

Kissinger said he and Vargas expect the average travel time for westbound traffic on Atlantic Boulevard during afternoon peak hour to go down even further, because when the testing was done in March, some of the delineator posts were still up, which caused traffic to slow down.

In addition, the Broward County Traffic Engineering Division hadn’t yet transferred as many seconds of traffic signal “green time” from Dixie Highway to Atlantic Boulevard as called for in the new timing plan, and every two seconds allows one more car to go through.

The transfer of green time from Dixie Highway to Atlantic Boulevard is possible because the

traffic pattern on Dixie Highway in both directions essentially went back to the way it was before the installation of the delineators.

Kissinger said another factor that will improve westbound traffic on Atlantic Boulevard is an increased stacking area that will be added to the two left-turn lanes onto southbound Cypress Road, which will help keep cars from blocking the through lane and backing up traffic.

The average travel time for westbound traffic on Atlantic Boulevard during afternoon peak hour could potentially decrease another two minutes, so there would be no net change from what it was in 2019, said Kissinger.

Kissinger said the travel time on Atlantic Boulevard in the eastbound direction from I-95, is faster than it was before the new traffic pattern was implemented, partly because the traffic signal at First Avenue was eliminated.

Soleste Pompano Beach 253-Unit Mixed-Use Development Is Up for Site Plan Approval

Soleste Pompano Beach, a largescale, mixed-use project planned for a currently vacant site at 208 N. Federal Highway, one block north of Atlantic Boulevard, continues to make its way through the City’s review process.

According to a site plan application submitted to the City by the developer, Estate Investments Group, LLC, the project consists of a modern 8-story building that includes 253 residential units, 4,000 square feet of street-facing retail/ commercial space, an interior parking garage, a pool located on the sixth level, a ground-floor picnic area and a dog park.

The roughly 1.95 net-acre project site is a collection of eight contiguous parcels on the east side of Federal Highway, just north of the old Kraeer Funeral Home, which presently sits vacant.

would have a mix of studios, one- and two-bedroom units.

At least 25% of the units would be 600 square feet or less.

A total of 367 parking spaces are proposed within the parking garage, with a portion of the parking provided as tandem parking spaces assigned to specific residential units. Electric car chargers would be provided in the parking garage.

Seven parallel parking spaces are proposed on NE 22nd Avenue.

The site plan shows that there would be one vehicular access point on NE Fourth Street to the north, and two vehicular access points on NE 22nd Avenue to the east. The main lobby of the building would front Federal Highway.

The transformation of the Atlantic Boulevard and Dixie Highway corridor (which includes the intersection itself, as well as the north-south and east-west approaches) is the first step of the City’s plan to create a new urban downtown.

The goal of the redesigned Atlantic Boulevard/Dixie Highway corridor is to create a gateway to the city, to improve safety for all modes of transportation, increase connectivity, eliminate blight and to serve as a catalyst for attracting private development to the area. The intersection will include wider sidewalks and medians, newly defined crosswalks and enhanced landscaping.

Whiting-Turner, the contractor that will be carrying out the work on the Atlantic Boulevard/ Dixie Highway corridor, has been refining a Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) for the construction costs. The GMP will be brought to the City Commission for approval, possibly later this month.

Kissinger anticipates construction of the final design will begin on the Dixie Highway segment sometime later this year, followed by construction of the segments of Atlantic Boulevard east and west of Dixie Highway. Y

Hillsboro Shores Mixed-Use Condominium Development Is Moving Forward

The developer of Hillsboro Shores, a large-scale mixed-use condominium project planned for two parcels of land between the Intracoastal Waterway and North Ocean Boulevard (A1A), just west of the Hillsboro Inlet Bridge, has begun applying for building permits. The project received site plan approval in 2018.

The Hillsboro Shores development consists of 121 residential units, 5,115 square feet of groundfloor retail space fronting A1A, a marina, 25 boat slips and a public pedestrian promenade.

The two parcels of land, which will be unified and developed as one site containing a single structure, are located at 2507 N. Ocean Boulevard and 2629 N. Riverside Drive. Collectively, they consist of approximately 2.5 acres.

The building will be 10 stories high – a tower element with levels 5-10 will sit above a pedestal containing levels 1-4. The tower is tapered and stepped back from A1A. E-COMMERCE DISTRIBUTION CENTER GETS GREEN LIGHT FROM PLANNING & ZONING BOARD

An e-commerce distribution center planned for the Isle Casino Pompano Park property received site plan approval from the Planning and Zoning Board in April.

The distribution center is part of the redevelopment of the Isle Casino property into Live! Resorts Pompano – a large-scale mixed-use project that includes entertainment, retail, dining, hotel, residential, office and logistics components.

The distribution center will consist of an approximately 517,000-squarefoot sortation facility and an approximately 141,000-square-foot delivery station that will operate 24/7.

roughly 96 acres on the east side of the 223-acre Isle Casino site, located on the southeast corner of Powerline Road and SW 3rd Street (Racetrack Road).

The e-commerce facility wasn’t in the original plans, but in 2020 the City Commission approved adding it at the request of The Cordish Companies, the master developer of Live! Resorts Pompano.

To accommodate the e-commerce facility, the Commission approved a land-use plan amendment that decreased the property’s office use and added an industrial use. The Commission also approved a rezoning amendment to allow industrial use.

The revised plans were a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to David Cordish, Chairman of the Baltimore-based Cordish Companies.

Cordish told the Commission that with more people working remotely, less office space was more appropriate, and the e-commerce facility would “jump start” the Live! Resorts Pompano project in a challenging economic environment.

High School Senior Creates Little Free Libraries for Pompano Beach Madison Durand, a high school senior who lives in Pompano Beach, has created, with help from her parents and friends, six Little Free Libraries for parks around the city.

The Little Free Libraries are the first in the city. The libraries are registered with the global Little Free Library Foundation, a nonprofit organization that places booksharing boxes in specific locations to encourage reading and a sense of community.

Durand’s Little Free Libraries have been installed in George Brummer Park, Harbor’s Edge Park, Sgt. Kip A. Jacoby Park, the Hillsboro Inlet Park and Community Park. Each library has a plaque that says, “Take a Book, Share a Book.”

The idea to install the Little Free Libraries stemmed from Durand’s love for reading. From the time she was in kindergarten, all the way through eighth grade, her parents used to take her to the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Fort Lauderdale every Friday night. She would get a new book each time they went.

“It gave me the impetus to finish the book I already had because in a week I’d be getting another one,” said Durand.

From all her visits to the bookstore with her parents, she had amassed “a small fortune of books.”

Durand kept her book collection in her bedroom closet, but last summer, had to get rid of it due to a moth issue.

Durand decided she wanted to donate the books. The ritual she had of going to Barnes & Noble with her parents “ingrained in me a principle that everybody should be able to have books whenever they want, and it’s a luxury that I had.”

She donated her books to Good Will, and then started thinking about how she could get books to places where people wouldn’t have to pay for them, or pay a late fee, and could just take one.

Durand began doing research and discovered the Little Free Library organization. She and her father spoke with a City of Pompano Beach employee in the Parks and Recreation Department and asked if they could install the Little Free Libraries.

The staff member had been thinking about starting a Little Free Library program in the city, so “the timing was perfect,” said Durand.

She and her father worked together on constructing them.

As president of the National English Honor Society at Calvary Christian Academy in Fort Lauderdale, Durand also liked the Little Free Libraries project because it was a way for the members of the honor society to earn community

service hours – they could either help paint the libraries, or replenish the libraries with new or used books.

A group of Durand’s friends from the honor society designed the different illustrations on the libraries, which are unique to the places where they are installed. Her mother painted the base coat for the libraries and the posts they sit on.

She also designed the graphics on the posts and added detail work to all of the libraries.

It took about 20 hours to make each library, and the whole project took about six months to complete.

The city’s public works department assisted with the installation of the libraries by digging the holes for the posts.

The initial influx of books for the libraries was from a book drive Durand held. She posted an announcement on Nextdoor, and each Sunday, for over a month, people brought their books to the parking lot of the Herb Skolnick Center, where Durand and her parents were waiting to load them up in the car. A large amount came from teachers, who brought “bins and bins” of books.

Durand also contacted the Good Will main distribution center in Fort Lauderdale, which now donates boxes of books regularly for the libraries.

Overall, at least 1,500 books have been donated to date, said Durand, and members of the honor society continue to replenish the libraries.

Durand is the official registered steward of the libraries. She and her parents visit two or three libraries per weekend.

“Every single time, people say how much they and their kids enjoy

In addition to the six libraries in the city’s parks, Durand and her team created and installed three others – at a day care center in Pompano Beach, at a residence in Coral Springs, and at the Palm Beach Zoo. Durand will be heading off to the University of Florida in the fall. The intention is that her parents and the new president of the honor society will take on the responsibility of overseeing the libraries.

Durand said her real passion is writing – short stories, poetry, essays and creative non-fiction.

Several of her works have been published in literary journals.

Currently, she’s a literary apprentice for the BreakBread Literacy Project, working as a volunteer editor as part of the magazine’s non-fiction genre team.

In college, Durand would like to double major in English and French, and minor in Spanish.

Recently, entertainment law and international law have sparked her interest. She also enjoys public speaking and “presenting ideas.” She envisions herself one day working as a college professor or at the United Nations, or both.

“The response that these libraries have generated gives me great hope for the future of readers and thinkers of all ages in our community, and I’m overjoyed to think even one person may develop a passion for reading because of these creations,” said Durand. “This process has been, and will continue to be, such a rewarding one, and I can’t wait to see bookworms across Pompano and beyond change our world for the better.” Y

Many residents in the Cypress Bend multi-family development south of the project site, and in the Palm Aire neighborhood to the west, were against adding the industrial use to the project, mainly due to concerns over the truck traffic that would be generated by the e-commerce distribution center.

Approximately 170 trailer trucks (18 wheelers) and 75 box trucks will access the sortation facility daily to drop off and pick up sorted packages.

It is anticipated approximately 21 line-haul trucks (tractor trailers) will deliver packages to the delivery

station each day, primarily from 10pm to 8am.

Trucks for both the delivery station and sortation facility will be required to enter and exit the site through a restricted access point at the northeast corner of the site, on Racetrack Road. Truck movement will be prohibited west on Racetrack Road and through the property onto Powerline Road.

The e-commerce distribution center will include over five miles of

underground conduit that will be used for electric vehicle charging stations, which are anticipated to be fully operational two years after the opening.

The sortation facility is expected to create about 1,000 jobs, and the delivery station about 140 jobs, which is a primary reason the City Commission was in favor of adding the e-commerce component to the Live! Resorts Pompano project.

An 8-foot-high buffer wall will be installed along the entire west side of the industrial development area.

To protect the neighbors to the south of the sortation facility, the plans include an over 50-foot buffer area along the southern property line, which fronts Cypress Bend Drive.

The buffer includes a 20-foot-high sound barrier wall, a landscaped berm and canopy trees. In addition, the sortation facility is set back approximately 400 feet from the southern property line.

Scannell Properties has built warehouse facilities for Amazon and FedEx in other cities. Pompano Beach already has an Amazon delivery station on North Andrews Avenue Extension, north of Copans Road.

The Isle Casino Pompano Park, owned and operated by Caesars Entertainment, is currently being rebranded as Harrah’s Pompano Beach. Live! Resorts Pompano will complement and encompass the existing casino facility, which is being expanded and renovated.

Currently, the City of Pompano Beach is reviewing site plans for other components of the Live! Resorts Pompano project – an entertainment complex, a retail development that includes a Publix, a Topgolf sports entertainment venue, and a major road system. Y JUNE 2022 • pointpubs.com

It Dawned on Me

Everyone Knows It’s Windy MUSINGS ON HURRICANE SEASON

BY DAWNE RICHARDS IT’S JUNE — CUE THE THEME FROM “JAWS” Not because of sharks, of course. Is there a “hurricane” theme song? If so, I have no idea what it is; I just hear the “Jaws” theme song. Of course, this is also what I hear every time my phone rings because I have three now “adult” children. But I digress, again.

Anyway, June is when people in other states are giddy with anticipation for those lazy, crazy, hazy days of summer (or something like that). We, on the other hand, are giddy with terror about the coming months. (Is “giddy with terror” a thing? I don’t think so. Anyway, you know what I mean.)

We are not giddy. We are squaring our shoulders, battening down the hatches, and thinking, “Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Hurricane season.”

Also, we’re “stocking up.”

Hahaha! No, we’re not. We should be, but maybe 10% of the folks in my circle actually prepare properly for hurricane season. How do you know they’ve prepared?

They miss no opportunity to tell you.

Of course, they don’t tell you what they do with those 4,000 batteries, 900 gallons of water, or crates of nonperishable food come November 30.

Anyway. If you think a six-month hurricane season is long enough, thank you very much, I have news for you! According to Natalie Weber of the Tampa Bay Times, NOAA is considering moving the start of hurricane season to May 15 because, apparently, “Over the past six years, named storms have formed before June 1.”

Wait, what?

Who decided to name those storms? Isn’t that sort of subjective criteria? Must we spend more than half the year in hurricane season? How much more are we expected to endure?

If you’d like a grain of salt with which to wash down this unpalatable news (yes, I know, grains of salt won’t wash down anything; this is called “poetic license”), consider this: back in

February of this year, the National Hurricane Center issued a statement announcing that, in a reanalysis of the 1966-1970 hurricane seasons, they have “discovered” 14 new tropical storms.

How is this possible? What do they mean, “discovered”? Were they hiding for the past 50 or so years? 1966 more than 50 years ago? I demand a recount!

In addition to these previously unrecognized 14 storms, they “diagnosed” two new hurricanes and stripped others of their category 2 designation. Sadly, these hurricanes do not seem to have anyone advocating for them. I’m considering starting a nonprofit dedicated to preserving storms’ original status after some statute of limitations has expired.

Anyway, in all seriousness, hurricane season (which still starts June 1, at least for now) is upon us. And all kidding/raging aside, please do prepare. Those of us who’ve been here a while should know better than to wait unless your idea of fun is getting into physical battles over the last can of kidney beans.

LOCAL JUNIOR GOLF PHENOMENON HARPER KISS IS ON COURSE TO BECOME A SUPERSTAR

BY RON CHOQUETTE, WITH ADDITIONAL REPORTING BY SUSAN ROSSER At the first mention of the game, Harper’s blue eyes light up the room. Harper Kiss, 9, the daughter of Kristen and Thomas Kiss of Lighthouse Point, doesn’t just play golf; she lives golf.

I recently spent an afternoon with Tom and Harper at the Pompano Golf Complex to learn more about this Pine Crest School third-grader. She is amazing.

Harper first swung a plastic toy club at age 2. At 4-years-old, her dad got her started hitting balls.

Lessons with a golf professional began at age 5. By 6, she was hooked. After learning the rules of the game and proper course etiquette, she played in her first

tournament when she turned 7 in October, 2019.

Most golfers have a few golf tales — such as that time they sunk an impossible putt or hit a drive worthy of Tiger Woods. As we talked about golf, Harper recounted one of her favorite golf memories when she hit an awful shot but managed to rally.

“I was playing in a tournament, and my first shot went behind a tree. And my second shot was about 20 feet away from the pin, and I made the putt for eagle.”

At this point, her mother, doubling as her social media manager, whips out her phone to show a heartwarming video of the moment. After sinking the putt, Harper is

thrilled and runs around the green searching for her mother. It is a touching moment to watch. The video has over 22,000 views on Instagram.

Harper’s average score in her first few tournaments was in the low 50s. Realizing her potential, Tom had an Astroturf putting green installed in their backyard. And within two weeks, Harper’s average score dropped twelve strokes. A few short months later, she learned that she had qualified for the US Kids Golf World Championship. Within less than a year of tournaments under her belt, she placed 12th in the world in her age group.

Of course, playing golf at such a high level is demanding. Harper has a packed weekly

schedule. She practices at Don Law Golf Academy with Diego Velasquez, a professional Colombian Golfer, on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Tuesday and Thursday, she takes lessons from Michele Conte at Palm Aire Country Club and then stays for another hour or two practicing skills she worked on during the lesson.

And you can sometimes spot her at the Pompano Beach Golf Course on Fridays for a practice round or at the range.

Kristen marvels at her daughter’s determination. She notes that many kids her age play team sports, affording them the chance to spend time with friends. Golf is an individual sport, so Harper spends a lot of time practicing

Harper’s accomplishments in 2021 include: • a new personal best score in a tournament of 31, five under par, including a bogey, three pars, four birdies, and an eagle • first place – LPGA/ USGA Girls Golf National Championship

• tied for first place – Under Armour Junior Tour Winter Nationals (co-ed) • third-place – US Kids Golf Florida State Invitational

at the range instead of with a team full of her peers. Yet, Harper’s eyes light up when she talks about how she loves the challenge, how much she relishes hitting a great shot, and how gratifying it is to play a terrific round of golf. Her love of the game is unmistakable.

Kristen admits that she can’t hit a golf ball — even though she is very athletic. She joked that she assumed she would be able to pick up golf pretty quickly since her 9-year-old daughter is such a natural. After one trip to the driving range, she conceded that was not the case. This realization makes her even more proud of her daughter’s accomplishments.

Of course, Harper’s weekends are pretty packed too. She plays in tournaments almost every Saturday and Sunday. Local events are one day, regional tournaments are two days, and the World Championship is three days. Players in Harper’s age bracket only play nine holes instead of 18.

Harper plays on six junior golf tours: US Kids Golf, Gold Coast Junior Golf Foundation, South Florida Junior PGA., IMG, LPGA/USGA Girls Golf, and the Under Armour Junior Tour.

The summer is the busy season for Harper.

During the spring, she beefs up the time and intensity of her practices in preparation for the most significant golf events of her life (thus far). In July is the first-ever Under Armour Junior Tour World Championship. August is the pinnacle event for junior golfers –– the US Kids Golf World Championship which attracts the best junior golfers worldwide. When she placed 17th in the world, Harper’s age group last year consisted of the 68 best female golfers. The field continues to grow in size as she gets older.

People have already requested Harper’s autograph, and many times at practice, she has an audience of adults watching her play in disbelief. She is very well known at the three courses she visits weekly.

• tied for second place – I.M.G. Junior Honda Classic, • 17th Place – US Kids Golf World Championships at Pinehurst, N.C.

• advanced to the regional competition for the PGA Drive, Chip, and Putt (locally, she was placed first for chipping and putting, and second in driving, at Broken Sound Country Club in Boca Raton).

Harper has the makings of a great golfer — her focus is exceptional. She is disciplined, confident, friendly and highly driven.

When asked what she wants to be when she grows up, Harper is quick to answer, “A PGA player.”

At this point, Kristen chimes in and clarifies that Harper plans to play professionally on the PGA (men’s) tour, not on the LPGA (women’s) tour.

And then, Harper, with her thousand-watt smile and a sparkle in her eye, reminds us, “They make more money.”

hen considering the perfect weekend getaway, two essentials come to mind: One must return feeling relaxed, and it is imperative to feel as if you visited somewhere distant. Good news — you don’t need to travel very far to accomplish both of these weekend goals.

Just northwest of Orlando, Mount Dora is only a little over a three-hour drive from Pompano Beach, yet it feels a world away.

As the name implies, it’s a touch hilly. No, not Alpine-style hilly, but the flat South Florida landscape does give way to a more rolling hill scene. This Central Florida retreat feels more like the American South than the palm tree-laden beach scenes of South Florida. In Mount Dora, the ancient stately oak trees outnumber the palms by a large margin. And It’s not uncommon for a server to ask, “what ya’ll havin’?” with a touch of a southern drawl. A visit to Mount Dora is akin to living inside a live-action version of a Norman Rockwell illustration.

It just feels different.

Still, Mount Dora is over three hours away, which places it outside of the daytrip zone, so it is best to plan a weekend.

The Lakeside Inn is Mount Dora’s biggest hotel and, as the name suggests, is down

by Lake Dora yet close to all the downtown action. There are also several quaint bed and breakfasts to choose from and a plethora of listings on Airbnb.com.

The Festivals

The city is famous for its festivals, and the lodging does fill up during festival weekends, so it is best to plan ahead.

The Renninger’s Antique Extravaganza happens several times a year and is a huge draw, as well as the art and crafts fairs that happen throughout the season.

There is even an Annual Scottish Highland Festival with live bagpipers marching through downtown. And the Taste of Mount

The Lake County Historical Society offers a Citrus Label Tour — a driving tour steeped in history.

Visitors can scan the QR code on each sign to learn more about each label and the citrus industry. The tour is a perfect chance to drive through the small rural towns of Lake County while taking in this naturally magnificent part of Florida.

Dora Festival will satisfy visiting foodies.

The Blueberry Festival is in its eighth year — yes, there is s a festival for everyone.

Shopping and Dining

Downtown Mount Dora has an abundance of dining options —from super casual all the way up to fine dining. The city enforces an ordinance that prohibits chains and franchises in the downtown area, ensuring the charming village keeps its mom-andpop small-town atmosphere.

We were impressed with the fish and chips at the Magical Meat Boutique, a British Style Pub serving all the classics.

An unexpected find was Wave Sushi and Asian Bistro. The restaurant serves sushi, sushi-tacos, sushi-burritos and sushiburgers. And for a small fee, you can have any sushi creation coated with flaming’ hot Cheeto dust. Yes, we tried it, and yes, we liked it.

You can also find Cuban, Italian and Indian fare downtown, a plethora of ice cream and gelato offerings, and several more high-end dining options. There is even a gluten-free restaurant — The Salted Fry — specializing in — you guessed it — French fries.

But the clear stand-out is 1921, an impressive establishment housed in a former home constructed in 1921.

along with a path that winds through the preserved natural site will calm your soul (who doesn’t need that these days?) and of course help you get in a few steps. There is also a plethora of wild life and this is a favorite spot for bird watchers. Word to the wise — watch out for alligators.

Catboat Adventures offers guided boat tours of Lake Dora — another fantastic way to see the area. Drive your own two-person powered catamaran across beautiful Lake Dora through the Dora Canal and into Lake Eustis. This guided tour is two hours long and narrated by knowledgeable guides.

For the more adventurous, Tavares, also known as the seaplane capital of North America, is only a 10-minute drive from Mount Dora. You can ride in a seaplane that takes off and lands from the waters of Lake Dora. And of course, from up above, you can see why it’s called Lake County to begin with.

For a touch of culture, visit The Mount Dora Center for the Arts — a community center offering art exhibits and educational programs. They also coordinate monthly art strolls, and of course, this is the group that hosts the Annual Mount Dora Festival of the Arts, which takes place the first weekend of February every year.

In just over three hours, you can transport yourself to — as the sign at the town’s entrance boasts — Mount Dora: someplace special. Y

a change in your restaurant rotation, take a trip back to the old country at Checkers Old Munchen. For a traditional German meal, try the wiener schnitzel — it’s divine — a lightly breaded veal cutlet sautéed in lemon butter and topped with homemade brown gravy. The spaetzle (German noodles) are a real homemade treat and not to be missed — throw a little of that brown gravy on them and they could be a meal unto themselves. Local Lighthouse Point fly-fisherman Derek Ulbrich finds the ultimate jungle experience and fly-fishing paradise in a deeply remote Bolivian national park amongst indigenous people of the Tsimane Tribe.

Your native guides, using their wooden push poles, steady the dug-out canoe next to the stream’s bank. You jump out onto a long, moss-covered boulder, fly rod in hand, and scramble upstream. Your guide is ahead of you, elevated on another mossy rock. He is squatting, with frozen intensity, as he points upstream with his left hand and emphatically waves you forward with his right. He points to a good spot for you to stand below and makes the universal symbol for big fish with hands wide apart. Something great lurks ahead. Heart rate: 90.

You don’t pay attention to the huge yellow and blue macaws squawking as they pass above, crossing the narrow canyon that towers over you. You hear only the rushing stream, and the sound of your reel as you strip out 60 feet of line and prepare your cast. Your guide, Santiago, and you quickly discuss the fish’s location. It is sitting in the fast current, against the rock wall on the right where the stream is only 8 feet wide and 2 feet deep. You check your back cast situation; jungle plants, boulders and logs behind you wait

eagerly to foil your attempt. You have only a very narrow corridor to work with. The cast is straight upstream, 20 meters into fast current; level of difficulty in the 9’s. Heart rate: increasing.

It’s showtime. With a few false casts you feed out the correct amount of line and land the fly exactly where you wanted, 5 feet in front of the fish.

“Strip, strip, strip!” your guide shouts as you furiously try to keep up with the current rushing towards you.

The fish turns and attacks the fly but the current is too fast, you feel it, you see it, but you can’t get tight to strip set the hook. You lift the rod in a last ditch effort to connect but the fly comes free and sails back past you at 100 mph. Brief and reflexive profanity ensues. You keep the false cast going though, ready for another shot. You still haven’t snagged a bush. Heart rate: 105 While keeping your false casts going your guide points again. He sees another fish, 20 feet farther up between a rock and a stick. Impossible you think. That is too far, no room left behind you, target too small, going to snag a tree any second... You muster your best double haul and release a Hail Mary upstream. The 9-weight line rolls out like it has a mind of its own, landing the huge fly exactly where you hoped. You can’t believe it. Perfection. It is happening! Heart rate: 120.

“Strip, strip, strip!!!” he yells as you see the fish turn, charge the fly, and eat. You concentrate on your hands to get tight, setting the hook in that bony mouth full of razor sharp teeth. Heart: not beating....

downstream. The native guides quickly move the cuamba out of the way as the fish takes to the air with a dramatic cart-wheeling leap and then continues downstream into the backing. The fish is big. It is your biggest yet anyway. Maybe 9 or 10 kilos. Heart rate: resumes somewhere in the 130s.

After a couple minutes and six more jumps, you coax your trophy to shore and your guide grabs it. You stand there and stare for a moment in a sort of stunned amazement. You carefully pick up the fish for some quick pictures before releasing this beautiful creature back to where it belongs. Your guide is ecstatic. You look at your native guides who are normally quite stoic and reserved.

They are both smiling. You did good. Looking up you take in the prehistoric scenery wrapped around you; this place is straight out of the pages of National Geographic. You cheer, “HAMSI!!!” — the Tsimane word for beautiful. It is day three and you still can’t believe you are here. Time to go find another fish.

The location is Sécure River Lodge at Asunta village (S 15.49.821, W 066.26.581) in the Western edge of Bolivia’s TIPNIS National Park and Indigenous Territory (TIPNIS stands for Territorio Indígena Parque Nacional Isiboro Sécure). It is a two-hour flight by Cessna from Santa Cruz to a tiny airstrip carved into the jungle. The majority of this

flight is over roadless, virgin jungle canopy interrupted only by scores of winding rivers and streams that have zero fishing pressure. The lodge is located where the crystal clear sub-Andean headwater streams empty into the rainforest and feed the rest of the Amazon basin. The fish are the Golden Dorado (Cazare) — arguably the most aggressive, acrobatic and exciting fresh water fly fishing target species in the world.

The outfitter is Untamed Angling, the brainchild of founder Marcelo Perez. The model he created is unique.

It is a cooperation between various groups of indigenous peoples and Untamed Angling to provide an eco-conscious and sustainable source of income for the indigenous people, while providing the stuff of fantasy for anglers seeking big fish and adventure in hyper-remote locations.

This is a barbless, fly fishing only, catch and release fishery.

These fish are treated with great respect. The dorados here are basically sacred to the locals who see them as partners in their hunt for the sabalo, a carp-like species that the dorados feast on during their annual upstream spawning migration. Caught by bow and arrow, Sabalo are a staple for the indigenous people and occupy the same ecological niche as mullet in Florida.

The fish I describe above, while not my biggest, was the

most memorable to me. It was the location, the hunt, the difficulty in presenting the fly, the smiles on my guides’ faces…. everything. That fish was caught in Ashahana Creek, a narrow and shallow, crystal clear tributary to the much larger Sécure river. It is like a jungle trout stream except these “trout” can push 40 lbs., are golden with giant heads, and can bite your finger off. There are two other less common species to target here. The Yatorana (Pirapatinga) vaguely resemble shad, also have vicious dentures, and fight and jump their hearts out. They are the least common

The park is a window into what things looked like a million years ago, still pristine and untouched. of the three and grow to over 10 lbs. Pound-for-pound, Yatorana are the strongest. They will take streamers and large dry flies. Then there is the Pacu (Tambaqui). Many of you are familiar with these as they can be found in the canals of South Florida as expats of the aquarium trade.

They are essentially a super-sized vegetarian piranha and are usually caught presenting fruit and nut imitations in the deep slow moving pools. Pacu even jump from time to JUNE 2022 • pointpubs.com

time and are referred to here as jungle permit. To catch all three in one day is a called a Tsimane Grand Slam, a club I was lucky enough to join.

The 70 local natives who live in the village of Asunta belong to the Tsimane tribe (Chi-mon-nay). This is their forest and they are in tune with every aspect of the river, jungle and wildlife. What they say goes. The children here start to learn the use of a bow and arrow at 2 years of age. They still live mostly as they always have getting all they need from the forest and the river. They also raise small crops of papaya, corn, pineapple and bananas.

Tribe members older than 30 remember a time before any regular contact with the outside world. Interacting with and learning from the natives is a special part of the entire visit.

It was interesting to learn about their culture.

For example, they don’t fight with each other and if a man were to strike his wife he would be thrown out of the village. Men are allowed two wives. They elect the leader of the village each year. They have many legends but no concept of God. They have no words in their language to express “thank you.”

The thing they fear most are stingrays and their absolute favorite thing to eat is monkey. They have very wide feet adapted over millennia for this area and walk barefoot all the time. They are very kind, noticeably shy, hard working and incredibly strong.

Another interesting note is that the Tsimane people were ranked as having the healthiest hearts of any group on the planet. Every member of the village is involved in some way with supporting the lodge. A trip to TIPNIS isn’t just fly fishing nirvana, it is really about just being there. This isn’t

a fishing trip, it is a complete jungle experience.

Untamed Angling runs six such lodges, three in Bolivia and three in Brazil providing opportunities to fish for the Amazon’s greatest game fishes: Dorado, Peacock Bass, Arapaima, Wolf fish, Payara, Pacu and several other species. In each case, you are a guest fishing indigenous land and guided by local Indians along with an expert fishing guide/interpreter. You travel the river by locally constructed, motorized dugouts called cuambas. At this location, nearly every time I stepped out of the cuamba, I was greeted with animal tracks in the sand along the shore— lots of them. The tracks of Jaguar, Puma, Ocelot,

Tapir, Peccary, Hochi, Kinkajou, Caiman and tiny forest deer called Chinyu are everywhere. In the air and trees are a bewildering variety of birds including all sorts of parrots and toucans.

At night many beautiful and bizarre insects visit the outer walls of your tent for your inspection by flashlight.

TIPNIS covers 5,000 square miles and is among the most biologically diverse places on the planet. According to Wiki, there are 218 mammal, 992 bird, 157 amphibian and 131 reptile species known in TIPNIS. There are likely thousands of unnamed insect and plant species here. The park is a

window into what things looked like a million years ago, still pristine and untouched.

After a day of fishing you return to the comforts of the lodge which was expertly built by the villagers using sustainable materials from the local forest.

Despite being so remote, this is five-star jungle living.

The camp chef is an expert gourmet. It was shocking to be eating such lavish meals considering where we actually were. Queen beds in large private tents, ceiling fans and lighting, private baths with hot showers, satellite internet Wi-Fi, ice cold beer and soda round out the comforts. The small group of about four to eight lucky anglers who visit here each week have want for nothing. The camp generator shuts off around 10:30 and it is time to get some rest for the next day’s fishing excursion. A day of fishing here can be quite strenuous, but if your adrenaline won’t stop dumping and you find you can’t sleep, solar powered batteries provide light in the pitch black darkness of the jungle. The jungle wakes up when the sun goes down. Sitting alone on my porch late at night, in the pitch black, looking at the stars, and listening to the sounds of the jungle, was simply awesome. From haunting chirps and calls, to violent crashing in the brush, each new sound seems more mysterious than the last.

A trip to Asunta Lodge may not be for everyone. I would not recommend a person going there unless/ until they are pretty good with a fly rod, so practice a lot before you go. I also wouldn’t suggest anyone with a heart issue or who is in poor physical shape go.

Standing and walking in wet boots in the sun for eight to nine hours a day, for six days straight, while casting large flies on 9 and 10 weight lines is physically quite demanding. Ninety percent of the fishing is wading or walking the banks of the river. They don’t let you just tromp through the jungle here either. There are things that can bite you that you would surely regret; this is not a place you want to get hurt. Visiting here is very safe but the nearest hospital is a long way away and requires a plane to come get you. I am pretty sure it is impossible to land on that airstrip in the dark.

So, if this story calls to you, and you are the kind of guy or gal who is seeking an unforgettable fishing adventure in true jungle paradise, then you need to put this trip at the very top of your freshwater bucket list.
