Social Media Isn’t So Social

W

e all need people. Not followers, not likes, but actual people. The kind you sit across from, the kind you laugh with, the kind who make you feel seen. But we’re living in a moment when more and more of our “socializing” happens alone, thumb on a screen, mistaking digital interaction for the real thing.

The other night, I was double-screening a TV show while relaxing on my couch. Double-screening is what I call the practice of watching a program that isn’t particularly captivating while simultaneously amusing myself with my phone. A girl can’t have too many screens.

But as I swiped, clicked and scrolled, I realized the social part was nearly absent. Once upon a time, social media felt like a family reunion or a neighborhood block party – a mix of casual conversation, inside jokes, and shared moments. Now it feels more like wandering through a shopping mall alone. Gone are the snapshots of a lavish lunch, the new puppy, or even the obligatory vacation selfie.

At first, social media really did connect us. It was fun – a little window into other people’s lives. But somewhere along the line, it started to feel less like connection and more like comparison. What began as “look at this fun thing I did” became, for some, “look at this fun thing you’re not doing.” We didn’t realize that the inadvertent result of all that sharing would be that too many people ended up feeling inadequate.

So people pulled back. The posts about ordinary joys — a sunny walk, a bologna sandwich, a night out with friends — started to disappear. And who can blame us? Nobody wants to be seen as bragging.

Don’t get me wrong – in some ways, that’s a relief.

Watching a girl I knew in college fly private does spark a twinge of jealousy. I don’t miss the performative posts that unintentionally made others feel like their lives weren’t measuring up. But there was something genuine in those early, unfiltered days – when people shared because they wanted to connect, not to compete. These days, even personal feeds feel as if they’ve been curated by a marketing department.

It’s time to admit that the “social” part of social media has practically vacated the realm. Honestly, it’s just media. The feed turned into a stage, and nearly every account is performing, broadcasting, promoting, or influencing.

And yet we keep calling it social media, as if that label can still make it true. But there’s very little that’s social about scrolling in silence, eyes glued to a glowing screen. No one feels warm and fuzzy after an hour on Facebook or Instagram.

But spend an hour actually talking with a friend, and something shifts. You remember that you’re human – a person who needs people. We live in what many call the loneliest era in modern history. Maybe that’s not a coincidence.

Maybe it’s time we remember how to be truly social again – without the scroll.

New Year, New Laptop “Wants” vs “needs.”

M

y new laptop was an absolute need.

No, I didn’t “indulge.”

You may not be surprised to know that I’m incredibly hard on devices. I overuse them; I demand unquestioning loyalty; I expect them to keep up with me.

Yes, that all might sound… weird, as if I’m anthropomorphizing inanimate objects. But I’m not. Really. Nor will I ever call a device or – ew! – furniture – “She.” What is that, and why do people do that?

I can’t stand reading things like: “Found this dresser on the curb today. Brought her home and can’t wait to restore her.”

EW! But I digress.

Anyway. The laptop. My old faithful laptop had started to show warning signs of its eventual demise. I tried to ignore the obvious until it became impossible.

The labels on the most frequently used letters in the English language had begun disappearing. This is a common problem for me. Someone once told me it’s the oils in my fingertips that cause this. I don’t know if that’s true, but sure enough, the letter labels were just about gone.

Then… these same keys mostly stopped working. At all. So, for example, I would type a “T”, and the computer would either type nothing or type a “Y” or an “R”, given their proximity to the T on the keyboard.

Soon, this issue spread to several other keys.

Determined and stubborn, I kept fighting the inevitable, committed to winning this battle of Woman Vs. Laptop.

For weeks, if not months, I fought the good fight, despite the fact that what I typed kept looking like an old-school ransom note, with weird characters appearing out of nowhere, missing characters, inappropriate capitalization, etc. etc.

As the keyboard got worse, I got more stubborn, determined to win.

Here’s what helped my battle:

Autocorrect – thank God for autocorrect!

Copying and pasting words and/or individual letters from prior successful attempts. Picture this: I’m trying to type the word “trying” (see what I did there?)

My keyboard’s valiant attempt comes out as “tr in “ I’d comb the document, find a word with a “y”, copy and paste it into “trying”, and then go back and find a word with a “g” and do the same.

I did this for weeks. No one can say that I’m not determined.

Finally, though, here’s what did me in: It became impossible for me to enter my laptop password. Clearly, I couldn’t use autocorrect or copy/paste.

I had to change my password to something without any of the misbehaving keys. That last time of typing the former password so I could get to the “change password” screen was a real nail-biter, but I managed.

Hours later, I ordered my new laptop. While I’m determined, I also usually know when it’s time to accept the inevitable…mostly.

The new laptop is a dream. Smaller, lighter, and best of all – it just works. Whew!

Debunking a Huge Myth The Truth About Multitasking

or decades, we’ve been sold one of the biggest myths of modern life: that multitasking is a superpower. We’re told the best performers, elite achievers, and top producers are the ones who juggle the most at once. In reality, multitasking is not a strength — it’s a liability. It quietly destroys productivity, creativity, and effectiveness. Science, psychology, and even the animal kingdom all point to the same conclusion.

To understand how damaging multitasking really is, consider one of the most famous lessons from the circus: the lion tamer.

A professional lion tamer doesn’t step into the ring with brute strength or weapons. Instead, he carries something simple — an upside-down bar stool. Holding the stool so all four legs point toward the lion’s face, the tamer instantly gains control.

Why does this work? Because the lion perceives each leg as a separate threat. Unable to decide which one to attack, the lion becomes confused and freezes. Too many targets create paralysis.

That same thing happens to us when we try to do too many things at once. Our attention splinters, clarity disappears, and progress slows to a crawl. Multitasking doesn’t help us move forward — it stalls us.

Modern life encourages constant switching: answering emails during meetings, checking messages while working on important projects, and bouncing between tasks all day long. It feels productive because we’re busy. But busy is not the same as effective.

Multitasking fractures attention, and fragmented attention produces fragmented results. When the brain is forced to switch rapidly between tasks, we lose more than time — we lose depth, creativity, and momentum.

There’s an important distinction to note: doing one mental task alongside a physical activity is fine. Listening to an audiobook while driving, exercising, or walking the dog is a great use of what’s often called “NET time” — No Extra Time. The real problem is trying to perform multiple mental tasks simultaneously.

Research shows just how costly that can be. Studies have found that when you’re working in a deep focus state and are interrupted — even briefly — it can take up to 11 minutes to fully regain your original level of concentration. Eleven minutes to get back into rhythm, clarity, and creative flow.

Multitasking not only lowers the quality of your work; it also increases stress and anxiety. Your brain isn’t designed to manage multiple competing priorities at once.

If multitasking is the myth, then single-tasking is the truth.

High achievers aren’t the ones doing everything. They’re the ones doing one thing with full intensity. Single-tasking means choosing one target, one mission, one outcome — and giving it your complete attention until it’s finished.

This is why productivity experts recommend working in focused blocks of 60 to 90 minutes. During these blocks, you commit to only one task, one problem, or one project. No switching. No checking your phone. No bouncing between tabs or apps.

When focus blocks are used consistently, three powerful things happen. First, the quality of your work improves. With your full cognitive capacity directed at a single task, creativity and accuracy increase. Second, your speed improves. What might take three hours while multitasking often takes just one hour when fully focused. Third, stress decreases. With fewer “chair legs” competing for attention, the mind naturally calms.

Multitasking feels productive because it creates motion. But motion without direction leads nowhere. Single-tasking creates results.

Whether your goal is to be a better businessperson, leader, parent, student, or martial artist, the principle is the same: do one thing at a time. Protect your focus. Guard your attention. Work in deep, uninterrupted blocks.

Bucket List Fishing Trips for 2026

hat better way to begin the new year than by working on your fishing resolutions? Reflecting on the best trips of 2025 and considering what’s next in 2026 is always worthwhile. The Pacific coast was on fire in 2025. Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mag Bay, Mexico, all saw record-breaking catches. At Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala, anglers released more than 20,000 billfish, and the lodge just completed a renovation with new boats joining the fleet.

The Lighthouse Point Saltwater Sportsman Association (LHPSSA) fishing club wrapped

up another impressive trip to Mag Bay, Mexico, in December. Two shifts of anglers fished three boats each, with several days seeing more than 50 striped marlin landed per shift. Anglers also reeled in 30-plus-pound mahi mahi, making the days even more memorable. Free diving alongside schools of marlin offered a truly unique experience.

Closer to home, the Bahamas provided solid action as well—from springtime tuna to fall wahoo, many boats had banner days. Deep drop anglers found great success, landing some of the nicest queen snapper and yellow eyes seen in recent years. Some ventured

farther south, reaching Crooked, Long, and San Salvador—waters known for producing monster marlin, tuna, and wahoo.

So, where should you fish in 2026? Whether it’s Cuba, the Azores, New England, the southern Bahamas, Guatemala, or Mexico, LHPSSA anglers have valuable experience and make these trips seamless year after year. I’m eyeing Tropic Star or Casa Vieja myself. Remember, planning ahead is key—regional fishing is best at certain times.

In the Blink of an Eye

I

t happens so fast, doesn’t it? One minute we’re watching the New Year’s Eve countdown, clinking Champagne glasses, promising ourselves that this year will be different and then, we blink, and it’s March! Our resolutions have vanished somewhere between the laundry pile and the grocery list, but there’s one promise worth keeping this year, and it has nothing to do with organizing your closets or cutting carbs. It’s about love.

We talk about “forever” when we say our vows, but the truth is, forever is built in a series of “nows.” And the older I get, the more I realize how quickly those “nows” can disappear. One blink, and the kids are grown. Another blink, and we’ll be scrolling photos, wondering when our spouse’s hair turned gray or when that wrinkle appeared on our face. We live as if time is unlimited, as if we can always start “next week” or “when things slow down.” But here’s the sobering truth: life doesn’t slow down. My husband Brian very often jokes to friends and family that life is like a roll of toilet paper, it seems to go faster and faster toward the end, and he’s right! Time certainly flies, and I hate to break it to you, but our marriages don’t magically become more loving and more fulfilling with time. Sadly, in most cases, the complete opposite is true.

So, this year, let it be about love. Why not notice that even after all this time, you’re both still here, still trying, still learning how to love a little better day after day. Or maybe not. Perhaps your marriage feels like it’s running on autopilot, or maybe blame and

resentment have crept in? You are not alone. Love isn’t as easy as we all expected it to be, is it? Sadly, after two divorces, I’ve learned that love isn’t the “feeling” we were taught to chase. Real love is waking up next to the same person every day and choosing them over and over again. It’s our small, daily decisions that really keep love alive. The decision to listen instead of getting defensive, to actively seek understanding of one another rather than going silent, to give each other a little grace when it comes to quirks and annoying habits. I am willing to bet you’d be shocked to hear that, according to Dr. John Gottman’s research, 69% of marital challenges are perpetual. Sounds crazy right? I can’t help but think are those things we get ourselves all worked up about really worth it?

Is it really about the annoying habits? Nope. It’s about the stories we tell ourselves about those habits that create frustration and disconnection in our relationships. The real shift begins when one person chooses to stop keeping score and start creating connection.

So, as we step into 2026, what if we stopped assuming we have time? What if we stopped letting busyness and bitterness eat up the moments with our partners that could have been precious

memories? What if we decided to treat our marriages like the fragile treasures they are… worthy of love, care, attention and protection?

I don’t want that for you. The good news is we can all start over at any time. Why not now? Start this year with the awareness that forever is shorter than we think. A Side that Steals the Show Maple-Miso Butternut Squash with Sweet-Savory Depth

I

’ve been known to plan a meal around a condiment. In the mood for salsa? Make tacos. And when I’m looking to spruce up an easy dinner without much effort, I often turn to side dishes. Roast a simple chicken with just olive oil, salt, and pepper, pair it with a standout side, and suddenly that hohum dinner feels a little out of the ordinary. And who doesn’t love a sweet-and-salty side? So the next time you toss some chicken on the grill or roast a quick pork tenderloin, try this umami-laden squash for a little extra oomph.

Maple-Miso Roasted Butternut Squash Ingredients 1 medium butternut squash, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes 2 tablespoons white miso paste 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup 2 tablespoons avocado oil 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar Fresh cilantro or scallions, chopped (both work beautifully—choose based on your audience) 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (optional) The juice from 1/2 a lemon Preparation • Heat the oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment for easier cleanup.

• Make the glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together the miso, maple syrup, avocado oil, and vinegar.

• Dress the squash: Toss the squash cubes with the glaze until everything is well coated.

• Roast: Spread the squash on the baking sheet in a single layer. Roast for 25–35 minutes, flipping once halfway, until caramelized on the edges and fork-tender.

• Mix the yogurt with the lemon juice and season with kosher salt. Spread the yogurt onto a platter. (You can skip the yogurt. It’s delish either way.)

• Arrange the squash over the yogurt. Sprinkle with cilantro or scallions. Serve warm.

ohn Offerdahl, who was the Miami Dolphins’ star linebacker for eight years, and his wife, Lynn, have made it their passion to ensure that disadvantaged homebound seniors living in Broward County receive fresh, nutritious meals delivered weekly by friendly volunteers.

They recently launched a campaign to recruit volunteer delivery drivers for their Hand-Off Meals for Seniors program, which is supporting more than 500 seniors in the community. Volunteer Drivers are asked to donate only one hour a week to this effort to fight senior hunger and isolation. Signing up is easy on the nonprofit’s website at handoffmeals.com or by contacting Delivery@HandOffMeals.com. A video on the website features John and Lynn talking about how it takes a team – like in football – to meet this critical need.

“Too many seniors in Broward County go to bed hungry, wake up hungry, and spend their days hungry,” says John Offerdahl. “This is unacceptable. That’s why my wife, Lynn, and I have launched the Hand-Off food delivery driver campaign.”

from meals for the homebound to seriously ill children. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit was founded on the mission to “feed the needs of those in crisis” by combining food, faith, and friendship to support vulnerable populations across South Florida.

Since then, the Foundation’s programs have served more than one million meals across South Florida, partnering with civic, business, and faith organizations.

When COVID rocked our nation, the Offerdahls became government contractors, providing meals and delivery to first responders and Broward County residents in need. Working closely with Heart2Heart, an organization dedicated to serving low-income seniors, the couple discovered this hidden population.

When Heart2Heart and the Hand-Off Foundation received a grant to serve meals to seniors from Strike Force, a female-only fundraising group, Lynn got the chance to ride along on one delivery for a retired teacher. During that visit, she met a mother and teenage daughter, who had been delivering meals to this senior for a while. Lynn was struck by the “magical” bond they had all formed. That experience inspired Lynn to support this effort and provide both healthy meals and human connections to seniors in need.

After COVID funds dried up, the Offerdahls applied for the opportunity to be the Broward County provider of meals for seniors. They received the contract and started the Hand-Off Meals for Seniors program. Today they work through the Area Agency for Aging of Broward County to provide weekly meals to seniors, coordinating with other local organizations that assess the needs of each beneficiary and step in when other services are required. Leonardo’s bound journals, or codices, hold thousands of sketches, experiments, and big questions about how the world works. In this exhibition, these pages appear beside his inventions, letting families explore his ideas as they unfold.

The Most Comprehensive Leonardo Exhibition Ever Presented From the moment guests enter, it feels as if they’re stepping into Leonardo’s imagination. Printed studies of flying machines, detailed anatomical drawings, and engineering concepts fill the space, revealing ideas centuries ahead of their time. This is the most comprehensive and immersive exploration of Leonardo’s life and legacy ever presented.

Created by Grande Experiences in collaboration with the Museo Leonardo da Vinci in Rome, Leonardo da Vinci – 500 Years of Genius blends storytelling, technology, science, and art. Full-scale models of flying machines, early helicopter concepts, and mechanical systems stand tall, built using Leonardo’s notes. Try Your Hand at Being an Inventor There’s also a space where guests can try their hand at invention. One day, during an office conversation that somehow drifted to the Florida sugar industry, she admitted she had no idea “they grew sugar in Florida.” As a transplanted New Yorker, I was genuinely surprised — even I knew that.

I think of that moment whenever I find myself up close with Florida’s natural beauty. It’s easy to cruise through our suburban, tropical paradise and forget that Florida isn’t all malls and master-planned communities. A short drive to the Alligator Alley Elevated Boardwalk is a gentle reminder of the Everglades’ sheer vastness — no wet feet required and no airboat noise (though there’s nothing wrong with either).

On a glorious Florida day, we hopped

in the car and headed west — and a bit south — to see what this elevated boardwalk was all about. This isn’t a place that dazzles with grand attractions, but that’s part of its charm. It’s a quiet pause, a moment to take in the Everglades.

And if you’re already heading that way — perhaps en route to Naples — it’s an especially worthwhile stop. Watching the sun set over the Everglades has a way of awakening the Wordsworth in all of us.

The walk to the top follows a gently sloped path, so there are no stairs to navigate. The incline is so gradual you’ll hardly notice you’re climbing what amounts to a few stories.

If you have children and want to introduce them to a slice of natural Florida without a hefty price tag, this modest rest stop — just about 15 minutes west of Weston — is an ideal choice. Y
