Choose Wisely ASK PEOPLE WHAT THEY THINK OF THE DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) and answers will range from “everything that’s wrong with society” to “a festering, bureaucratic abyss.” After I literally spent eight hours in one day at the DMV a few years ago, I was mistakenly under the impression I had experienced the worst this public agency had to offer.

My most recent run-in with the DMV involved procuring a learner’s permit for my daughter Zoe. Prior to her appointment, I gathered all the necessary paperwork — or so I thought. There we were at the counter, when the young man helping us said he could not find a record of Zoe passing the online test. Apparently, there can be a glitch; test scores aren’t always “passed through” to the DMV’s computer system. And so our fiasco began.

Naturally, I was annoyed. I automatically sunk into “the DMV is a ridiculous, inefficient bureaucracy” mode.

The clerk recommended Zoe use her iPhone to go online and retrieve her test confirmation number. It’s quite possible that my daughter, who happens to be a fabulously conscientious student, was the first teenager to arrive at the DMV without realizing she must actually pass a test covering her newly minted knowledge of driving rules and regulations. I never considered the clerk was unable to locate Zoe’s score because there was no score. But that is indeed what happened.

Zoe did take and pass the test right there at the DMV on my iPhone. The kind clerk volunteered to help us when she finished so we would not have to go to the back of the line.

But no, when Zoe finished, he was covering for the cashier who was at lunch. We would have to wait. After about 30 minutes, we were finally summoned back to the counter.

It was at this moment when we were informed that one out of 40 people are asked to retake the test at the DMV office. Zoe was number 40. Again, I slipped into default mode of “you people are ridiculous.”

Naturally, when she took the test a second time, she failed.

We left feeling wildly frustrated.

Zoe retook the test, passed and we headed back to the DMV. After the clerk processed our paper work and we could finally see the finish line she said “Oh, Zoe has been randomly chosen to retake the online test at our office.”

Nothing about this seemed random.

I knew in that moment that I could not let myself slide into “obnoxious, angry mother mode.” With every last ounce of patience I could muster, I smiled. I even laughed a little.

I politely let her know that Zoe had already been randomly chosen the last time we were there. I’m not sure what magic wand she waived, but somehow she managed to save Zoe from the hassle. I was so thankful. Beyond grateful. I should bring her cookies.

It’s all too easy —even natural — in these situations to loose your cool — to become irritated. Alternatively, it’s far more difficult to stop and imagine the lives of everyone around you (particularly at the DMV).

During our second trip, I forced myself to recognize the clerk was not sitting behind her computer surreptitiously plotting against me and my daughter. She wasn’t some sort of wicked government sorcerer involved in a clandestine plot to aggravate me to the point where I would become a blithering puddle of a mother. Nope, she was just doing her job. And even if she wasn’t — who knows what the rest of her life is like.

Maybe she had a huge fight with her husband that morning or maybe she takes care of a sick parent. Maybe she has teenagers at home who drive her nuts. Or maybe not. Either way, I know we are both better off if I show her a touch more kindness than necessary.

The world is filled with glitches and irritants. There are miserable waiters and slow Wi-Fi. There are people who talk too loudly on their cell phones at Starbucks. There are bad drivers who cut you off. Sometimes there’s old chewing gum on the ground just waiting for you to step on it. And, you practically have to be Phi Beta Kappa to buy milk these days. It can all drive you crazy — if you let it. The choice is yours.

P.S. Full disclosure; I rarely take my own advice — but goodness knows, I need to.

Funky Buddha’s Maple Bacon Coffee Porter Festival 2018 & Hangover Brunch

What goes better together than maple syrup, bacon, coffee and beer? Is it a coincidence that nearly 10,000 donated backpacks from Thirty-One Gifts laid end-to-end would stretch almost 3.1 miles? Broward Education Foundation doesn’t think so and was amazed at the generous contribution, valued at more than $500,000, to help students in need at Broward County Public Schools.

The recent donation to Broward Education Foundation’s Tools For Schools Broward Center from Thirty-One Gifts was made possible through the Kids in Need Foundation.

“There is tremendous and ongoing need for school supplies throughout the school year,” said Broward Education Foundation Executive Director Shea Ciriago. “The need grew even more as our district absorbed students affected by Hurricane Irma. With the generosity of partners like the Kids in Need Foundation and Thirty-One Gifts, we can fulfill those needs.”

Broward Education Foundation established its Tools for Schools Broward center to provide students in need with free school supplies in 2010. Teachers at Title I Broward County Public Schools shop free, twice a year, for their students and classrooms.

In partnership with Kids in Need Foundation, local businesses and community leaders, Broward Education Foundation facilitated the distribution of more than $1.5 million in essential supplies for students attending Broward County Public Schools last year.

City Commission to Reconsider Term Limits Last October, after a lengthy and intricate discussion, the City Commission voted 3:2 against putting several election-related issues, including limits on the number of terms the mayor and city commissioners can serve, on the November 2018 ballot for residents to vote on. The Commission is scheduled to address the issue of term limits again at its Jan. 9 meeting, during which residents will be able to voice their opinion.

As a result of continuing the discussion, Commissioners may decide to have the City Attorney prepare an ordinance that would place the question of term limits on a municipal election ballot so residents can

possibly vote on it sometime in 2018 – either in the August primaries, the November general election or a special election called by the city.

Other issues the Commission may revisit at this meeting are extending terms of office from three to four years, and moving municipal elections from March to November. These issues, like term limits, would require approval from voters by referendum because they involve changing the city’s charter.

The City Commission reached a consensus at its Nov. 28 meeting to bring the issue of term limits back to the table.

A number of people who attended the

meeting told commissioners that the conversation regarding term limits should be extended to residents.

Commissioner Earl Maucker said that although he is opposed to term limits and changing the election cycle, after reflection and speaking with residents, he believes residents should have the opportunity to participate in the process. Commission Vice President Jason Joffe and Commissioner Kyle Van Buskirk, who in October cast the only votes in favor of putting the issue of term limits on a ballot, said they wanted to get it back on the agenda so residents can weigh in on it. The rest of the Commission was not opposed.

Public Meeting to be Held for Ibis Bridge Replacement On Jan. 11, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will host a public information meeting at Dixon Ahl Hall (2220 NE 38th St.) in Lighthouse Point from 5-7pm, so members of the community can learn about the Ibis Bridge replacement project — scheduled to begin in 2019 — and provide their input.

The Ibis Bridge, located on Lighthouse Drive between NE 29th Street and NE 30th Street, was built in 1950 over the Ibis Waterway.

It has been designated by FDOT as functionally obsolete, but is not a public safety hazard. FDOT will carry out and fund the replacement of the bridge at an estimated cost of $1.5 million.

At this month’s FDOT meeting, which will be conducted as an open house, residents will be able to view design

plans and speak with project representatives who will be there to get feedback and answer questions.

Construction of the new bridge is anticipated to last about 18 months. The city has pushed to reduce the construction time, and to minimize the impact the project will have on local traffic and residents along the detour route, but because of the street access surrounding the bridge, it will be a challenge, said a city official.

The city’s goal is to avoid adverse impacts similar to those encountered during the replacement of the Kingfisher Bridge, also on Lighthouse Drive. That project began in 2012 and lasted for more than two years, well beyond its anticipated completion date. Vibration from equipment used during the construction caused damage to the adjacent seawalls and homes, which resulted in significant delays.

According to FDOT statistics, the Ibis Bridge is traveled by vehicles on average more than 5,000 times per day. It is the last of the four bridges along Lighthouse Drive to be replaced.

Shawn Gilmartin Named Lighthouse Point Fire Chief After serving eight years as Lighthouse Point’s assistant fire chief, Shawn Gilmartin was appointed as the city’s new fire chief last month. Gilmartin had been the acting fire chief since last October, when former Fire Chief David Donzella retired.

“I’m very excited to continue to be part of the City of Lighthouse Point,” said Gilmartin. “It’s a great city and a great place to work, and the firemen and firewomen are true professionals. I’m happy for the opportunity.”

Before coming to work for Lighthouse Point as assistant fire chief in 2009, Gilmartin was with the Pembroke Pines Fire Department for 25 years. During that time, he served as a combat firefighter for 20 years, then became an administrative chief in training and logistics.

He spent his final three years as the chief of fire operations.

Gilmartin said his goal as chief of Lighthouse Point’s fire

department is “to build on the foundation that’s already there and continue to provide a high level of service to the citizens of Lighthouse Point.” He has placed a high priority on developing the department’s younger personnel, as well as keeping the department up to date with new technologies.

Some of that new technology includes a large electronic map that was mounted on a wall inside the fire station just a few weeks ago, at Gilmartin’s initiative. Using GPS routing, it shows firefighters, at a glance, exactly where they need to go when calls come in, making it easier and quicker to get to the scene of an emergency.

“It’s just another way to increase our efficiency and accuracy of knowing where the calls are,” said Gilmartin. “It’s pretty amazing.”

The department will also be getting new battery-operated extrication tools — known as “jaws of life” — which they use often for automobile accidents along Federal Highway. The extrication tools they currently use are gas-powered (like a generator), with hydraulic hoses that have to be laid out and hooked up before starting the motor and beginning the extrication process.

The firefighters will be able to grab the new battery-operated extrication tools off the truck and start working right away.

“It’s quick and saves time, which can save lives,” said Gilmartin.

Another tech-related improvement he wants to introduce is computerized record keeping for the department’s vehicles and equipment. Certain elements are already computerized, such as report writing, training and data pertaining to fire hydrants.

Gilmartin said he wants to build a positive work atmosphere, and is implementing a new approach to get everybody involved and invested in the department. He’s putting each firefighter in charge of something, whether it’s vehicle maintenance, hydrants, extinguishers or the air packs that the firefighters wear.

The goal is to make each person an expert in a specific area and to build management skills, particularly in the younger firefighters.

“I want to let people have something that they can latch on to, and take pride in, and that pride will be relayed to the rest of the department,” said Gilmartin.

The culmination of Gilmartin’s plans and expectations for the department will be achieving a Class 1 rating from the Insurance Services Office (ISO) in the near future, through continued firefighter training, pre-fire planning, equipment maintenance, water supply, communications and maintaining its automatic aid agreement with the City of Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, which has an ISO Class 1 rating. The Lighthouse Point Fire Department earned the distinction of an ISO Class 2 rating last year.

“I’m truly honored on being named fire chief by the mayor and commissioners, and to serve in this leadership role,” said Gilmartin.

Deerfield Beach has banned styrofoam on the beach and at city events

Deerfield Beach has joined Miami Beach in prohibiting styrofoam on the beach. The beach ban started on Dec. 15. In October, Deerfield Beach also banned styrofoam from all city events. The decision was made to protect the ocean as styrofoam (made of polystyrene) is not biodegradable and often ends up in the sea.

The Dart Container Corporation (a company that makes polystyrene and is headquartered in Deerfield Beach) has also partnered with the city to create a collection and recycling program for polystyrene containters. The company has agreed to take responsibility of picking up polystyrene containers from the waste drop-off site once a week. According to Dart, foam food service products can be recycled as part of an integrated waste management strategy. Dart encourages the recycling of foam cups and foam food service products by offering three options: The CARE Program for large operators; Recycla-Pak, a mailback recycling program for small operators; and drop-off locations for the general public.

With Miami and Deerfield Beach on board, Pompano Beach officials have expressed interest in a similar ban.

Brandon oozes southern charm. His bright white smile and infectious laugh warm the room.

On one wrist he wears about two dozen multicolored bracelets from competitive running races and charities (Brandon is an avid competitive runner). On the other, a large watch, which Brandon glances at regularly — he places high importance on being on time.

His crisply-ironed button up shirt has his name tag pinned to it. When we met for coffee, he had just come from attending training to be a holiday seasonal employee at Macy’s. He also works 33 hours a week at Rising Tides Car Wash where he’s worked for about four years now.

“I really like working. Working has been my thing,” he said, smiling. “I don’t like to sit around and be bored.”

Brandon appreciates working more than the average guy. Perhaps it’s because he hasn’t always had the social or life skills necessary to work. When Brandon moved to Florida from Charolette, NC back in 2009 in his early 20s, he came to learn and attend programs at New Directions, a school and community for young adults with executive functioning deficits from developmental and psychological disorders. As an autistic young adult in a new state, away from his family, Brandon had a lot to learn.

New Directions aims to help young adults like Brandon become independent citizens, teaching vocational, health, social and recreational skills. New Directions students live in apartments and condos together near Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach.

At first, Brandon started at volunteer jobs, working at a nursing home called White Hall, then at the Boca YMCA and Boca Helping Hands program. Volunteering gave him the skills he needed to later pursue a paying job. With the help of New

Directions, Brandon was able to get his driver’s license and a car. He learned the life skills needed to keep a clean and tidy two bedroom apartment, which he takes great pride in. The wall of his bedroom is lined with hundreds of ribbons from races he’s run in, and his bedside table is littered with golden trophies. If you visit, Brandon will probably make you take your shoes off and put them on an organized and labeled shoe rack (with signs he made himself). He will also probably ask you to wear socks. Brandon’s cleanliness is very important to him, which is probably why he loves working at the car wash so much — making the “cars shine.”

While attending New Directions, Brandon participated in an online fundraising course, which gave him the idea to host his own competitive race. In partnership with the International Society for Autism, New Directions and his friends at the Greater Fort Lauderdale Road Runners Club (GFLRRC), Brandon’s Run was born. The event was initially an opportunity for Brandon and other students to learn organizational skills through planning and executing the event, but the success of the event encouraged Brandon to repeat it annually. Now in its fifth year, Brandon’s Run for Autism, a 5k outdoor race, is going strong. Every year the race has grown in participation and sponsorships. The money raised is used to support autism research, as well as scholarships and job training for people with autism.

Year of the Iguana

RECENTLY, MY NEIGHBORHOOD WAS SWARMING WITH ICE agents. No, not the federal Immigration & Customs Enforcement kind, but the newly-formed state agency: Iguana & Coconut Enforcement.

This unit was created in response to an infestation of the green lizards (and a coconut problem), which I applauded until I found out it is a “Catch-22” operation.

It seems that Florida is a sanctuary state for iguanas. You are not permitted to kill them. You can humanely trap them, but you can’t deport them, which leaves you with cages full of the reptiles that you now have to feed, house and provide with medical care.

The only other option is to release them, which brings us back to square one.

I have had iguanas on my deck ranging in size from a diminutive 18- inches to one akin to a bright green water buffalo.

Now, I appreciate wildlife, and I don’t mind so much that they eat my basil plants, but their excrement is something else.

Someone should find a way to make glue out of iguana droppings. I had to set my power washer to 10,000 psi to blast

the stuff off the wood deck. This worked, but it also turned the deck into sawdust, so I don’t recommend it. (Note: Iguana poop contains salmonella and other nasty things which can kill you, but you can’t kill them. What’s wrong with this picture?)

When I lived in Jersey, my only reference to iguanas was the Tennessee Williams play “Night of the Iguana.” It seems the lizards boycotted the state because of the climate and the lack of escarole.

Fortunately, I have a solution to the iguana dilemma in Broward. We all chip in and buy 70,000 tons of arugula, which we spread in a line all the way to Tallahassee, much like Hansel and Gretel with their bread crumbs. In a few weeks all the iguanas will be in the state capital producing almost as much hot air as the legislature. We get rid of the lizards and Tallahassee gets 10 degrees warmer — a win-win situation.

As for coconut enforcement by Florida ICE, I was surprised to learn how serious a problem this is. Since 1892, the first year records were kept for this, 119 people have been hit by falling coconuts, three of them in Florida. One of those cases was in 1946, but there were two incidents last year, which the state regards as an epidemic.

The “coco cops,” as they are affectionately known, have been empowered to order that all owners of property containing coconut palms must place safety nets under them. This is known as the “Flying Wallendas Act.” If a property owner fails to comply, he will be guilty of a class one violation with a fine of $1,000 per coconut and the fruit (yes, it’s a fruit) will be confiscated. The coconuts then will be shipped to the Indo-Pacific region to feed the shrinking numbers of coconut crabs to prevent them from eating each other. The state keeps the cash and the crabs get a meal, another win-win situation (if we leave the property owner out of the equation).

Personally, I think texting while driving is more dangerous than a coconut, but it’s still a class two violation, meaning police can’t stop you just for texting. They have to stop you for something else first.

Therefore, if you insist on texting behind the wheel, you better make sure your iguana is wearing his seat belt. Y

Resolve and Discipline TIPS FOR KEEPING THOSE PESKY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

BY DR. JILL SELBACH T’IS THE SEASON FOR MAKING NEW YEAR’S resolutions. My pet peeve. Who even gets through the month of January without faltering and feeling terrible about themselves? Like setting any goal, it needs to be achievable. Making small changes incrementally that add up to a sustainable lifestyle change is the way to go.

I always say to people that anything is achievable with discipline, structure and commitment. Retired Navy Seal, Jocko Willink, is the author of the book “Discipline Equals Freedom.” I’m sure plenty of people will read this title and not agree. Discipline today seems to be a dirty word. When I use this word with people they frequently say they don’t like it, and it has a negative connotation for them.

Willing talks about motivation. If we were motivated everyday, we would stick to our goals, right? He says,

wrong! We need to understand that motivation will wax and wane and that we can’t rely on motivation to carry us through to our goals. It is discipline. Discipline is making yourself do it, even when you don’t want to.

Nike was on to something with their slogan, “Just Do It.” Achieving goals isn’t easy; it is hard work. So we need to let go of the belief that it will be, or should be, easy. Some people shy away from a goal because, in comparison to others, they feel inadequate. It is important to do our personal best — not to set up unrealistic expectations

based on someone else’s strengths.

Society today sends the message of, “If it doesn’t feel good, don’t do it.” Sometimes we need to experience discomfort, pain or anxiety to get to where we are going.

It is necessary. Our nature is to run from these negative things and seek comfort. That is what will derail us every time. We slack off just a little to be a little less uncomfortable, and then, before you know it, we are completely off track.

Fear is another factor which can take us off course or prevent us from beginning our course. Fear of failure, fear of success, fear of the unknown. The only way to quell the fear is to face it. If it doesn’t challenge us, it doesn’t change us. Stop examining the reasons not to go after your goal, stop making excuses. Instead, take action and stop thinking. I hear all kinds of excuses: I don’t have time, I can’t stick with it, It hurts too much…. these excuses keep us stuck in the same place and that is not fulfilling for most people.

It makes people feel good about themselves to continually strive for something new. It doesn’t have to be big, just something to strive for and achieve as we continually look to improve and grow. These goals could be fitness, financial, educational or family goals. Think of how to make things happen instead of looking at the barriers.

Olympic athletes definitely didn’t think about how the chances were slim-to-none to make it to the Olympics when they started out. I spent a few hours with Tyler Clary, who won the gold medal in the 200-meter backstroke in Olympic record time. In total, he won sixteen medals in major international competitions: three gold, eight silver and five bronze, spanning the Summer Olympics, the FINA World Championships, the Pan Pacific Championships and the Pan American Games. He talked about saying to himself, “Why not me?”

Age is just a number ARE YOU LIMITING YOUR POTENTIAL?

BY CRAIG HALEY I HAVE BEEN TRAINING IN MARTIAL ARTS FOR 30-PLUS YEARS and teaching for more than 25 years. Even after all these years of teaching both kids and adults, I am amazed at how many people won’t give martial arts, or any form of exercise, a try because they feel they are “too old.”

I can’t remember who said it, but I remember a quote that asks, “If you didn’t know how old you were, how old would you be?”

Great question!

Fifty percent of the students at Elite Force Martial Arts are adults, many of them are in their 50s and 60s. We even had a married couple, Reuven and Miri Michaeli, earn their Black Belts together at the ages of 74 and 69 respectively! I saw Reuven out running a few months ago and he’s now 79.

Just this past October we had our most successful Black Belt Spectacular. We had 34 students graduate to first degree black belt or higher, and half of them were adults.

“Lightning” Lenny Ruden earned his first degree black belt at 65 years young. Lenny is a registered nurse and has his sights set not just on second degree, but third degree and beyond. He reminds

everyone in the dojo, “Never give up, and age is just a number!”

We can all learn from that mindset!

Pamela Hull is 60 years young, and she earned her first degree black belt. Pamela is as active as they come and has no intention of slowing down. She achieved her black belt while making weekly trips to the west coast of Florida to care for her mom.

Randi “Light’em Up” Livoti is 56 years young and earned her first degree black belt. Randi has overcome several injuries and setbacks, yet not one of them permanently stopped her. She’s got that “refuse to lose” attitude.

David Parker is 54 years young and just earned second degree black belt. He has overcome double shoulder surgery, is a successful real estate agent with Keller Williams and a real estate coach under Tom Ferry. He has incredible determination and drive. No injuries or obstacles will slow him down ever.

Pamela Rossi earned her first degree black belt just after turning 50. She owns P.J. Rossi Jewelers in Fort Lauderdale, and she is an absolute machine. She just signed up for a Spartan race in early 2018.

I know people deal with injuries, obstacles and setbacks. They are a part of life, and no one is immune to them. What we can all learn from the examples above is the focus should always be on what you can do, not what you can’t.

Randy Couture was competing in the UFC until the age of 47.

Dana Torres competed in five Olympic games, and was the oldest swimmer in history to win a silver medal at the age of 41. Nolan Ryan retired from Major League Baseball at 46 years old and 5,714 career strikeouts.

Randy, Dana, Nolan and countless others did not let their age define them. They showed the world what is possible with the right attitude and the willingness to put the work in.

IT’S RESOLUTION TIME! Resolutions aren’t my favorite; I prefer setting private, unachievable goals throughout the year, more like periodic mandates to myself.

I’m usually as successful as those making New Year’s resolutions, which is to say that my probability of success is near-zero.

According to Stanford University, almost 90 percent of Americans will eventually abandon their New Year’s resolutions. But I think I’m ready to play the resolution game, and join the winning 10 percent team.

My resolution is simple, but it comes with a convoluted backstory for another day, and you’ll never guess it. Ready? Hint: My New Year’s resolution is to decide, for good, my public persona.

Before revealing more, let’s test my resolve via Stanford’s tips: 1. Can I change this behavior overnight? Yes! 2. Are there other things in my life that need to change to support this resolution? Maybe.

3. Is this a reasonable goal? Sure.

4. Is the resolution specific? Absolutely.

5. Is there a reward I can give myself for achieving the resolution that won’t become the goal in and of itself? Yes. The decision is the reward.

Can you guess what my resolution is? I bet you can’t!

Here’s the big reveal — I will decide whether I’m ever going to actually use any of the 48 (I counted) makeup items I own.

Yes, this sounds trite. Surely, I could resolve to help end world hunger, or find any number of more noble resolutions. But those 48 (!) tubes, jars, pots and wands stare reproachfully at me every

morning. They get on my nerves. And I certainly spent more on them than the average U.S per capita spending on cosmetics (some quick math puts this at about $25; my tab is considerably higher).

Go ahead, laugh!

But bear with me, and ponder these numbers: • U.S. Annual Spending on Makeup, 2016: $8 billion* • Global Spending on Makeup in the month of December 2016: $1 billion** So, here’s the thing. I wear this makeup, on average, once a quarter. I mean to wear it every time I’m in public, but taking the time to do so just seems like time better spent doing something else — anything else, really. So, there sits all 48 items, my contribution to the beauty industry.

Here, then, is my resolution, which isn’t a resolution (or even a mandate), but a resolution to make a decision between the two following options: A. I will no longer participate in this charade and will get back an entire standing cabinet, as well as relieve myself of inestimable guilt, by tossing it all; I commit to being seen for my true self, a joyful 57-year-old grandmother with a demanding job and a full life.

B. I will embrace the charade and take 15 minutes on most days to look more like a joyful 45-year-old grandmother with a demanding job, a full life and great skin.

LOSING YOUR SPOUSE OR SIGNIFICANT OTHER IS a very traumatic event. It is most important for your physical and emotional health to give yourself time for the grieving process.

Once you feel mentally and emotionally able to do so, you should schedule an appointment with an attorney to review all legal documents.

You should bring your will and/or revocable living trust, deed to your home, certified copy of the death certificate and date of your marriage. If you have advanced care directives such as a living will, durable power of attorney and designation of health care surrogate, you should bring those as well.

The affidavit will state that you were married on a certain date and remained continuously married without divorce until the date of death. It will provide the legal description of your home and indicate your intention to clear title. This document will be recorded, along with an affidavit of no Florida estate tax due and the death certificate without the cause of death. Recording these documents will clear title and allow you the option to do a new deed to avoid probate when you die.

If you do not have a revocable living trust, this appointment will be a good opportunity for you to discuss the creation of a trust and preparation of a deed in order to avoid probate on your home. You can also discuss the option of a life estate deed to avoid probate.

If you do have a trust, this may be an appropriate time to consider doing an amendment to the trust based on new circumstances. You may wish to name one of your children as co-trustee to make it easier to manage the assets in your trust if you become incapacitated. You may also wish to make changes in your living will, durable power of attorney and designation of health care surrogate, or create those documents if you do not have them.

In most cases, there is no urgency to contact an attorney. It is much better to have peace of mind and clarity. Some lawyers, including myself, will offer a free consultation. This consultation should include your options and give you the opportunity to sleep on it before finalizing any new legal documents. Y

If everything you owned was in both names, it is not necessary to probate your spouse’s will. However, regarding your home, it is a good idea to “clear the title.” The lawyer will prepare and have you sign a “continuous marriage affidavit,” which is why you need the date of your marriage.

Adventures in Shared Indulgence IN A WORLD WHERE WE RETREAT TO OUR OWN CORNERS OF the home, plugged into our own individual iPads and laptops to binge watch Netflix in the privacy of our own little sphere, culture can sometimes be a bit isolating. Sure, we might discuss a show, but we’re not really sharing the experience. Dining out can sometimes feel the same way — each person burying their heads in their own individual entree, occasionally exchanging short remarks like “How’s the steak?” — “Good.”

It’s no wonder why sometimes we crave a little more connection.

The recent surge in shared dining and tapas-style restaurants seems to be a response to such a phenomena. In 2016, shared dining made the top-ten list for rising themes by the National Restaurant Association’s culinary forecast survey. The Italians know well the power inherent in a shared meal — how large plates, red wine and full bellies assure conversation and connection. Yet the traditional way feels a bit too grandma’s house. Today’s shared dining restaurants seem to be attempting to elevate the communal dining experience to a more sophisticated and elegant affair.

Terra Mare is no exception. The new seaside restaurant on the first floor of the Conrad hotel in Ft. Lauderdale has taken the shared dining experience to bright new levels. Terra Mare, which means land and sea in Italian, is the perfect name for the restaurant. The menu, prepared by Executive Chef Johan Svensson (a Sweedish

culinary master hailing from Nobu in London) plays both on land (like thick-cut steak and crispy pork belly) and sea (such as freshcaught fish, scallops and lobster). The restaurant’s ethereal, modern design (with a wave-shaped ceiling, whimsical art made from backlit crystals and a U-shaped bar in the center) play off the same themes in a sleek, understated way.

At Terra Mare I think of the phrase — “Its about the journey, not the destination.” And this journey is immersive, sensory and fun. Our server, well-trained and personable, helped guide our path ahead, helping us plan the courses and pairing them with a bright, crisp wine — a 2015 Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc from Marlbourough — dry, with a tart pinch of grapefruit and bright citrus notes. It was a refreshing palate cleanser to go with our first two plates — the first an ahi tuna crudo, the second pan-seared sea scallops.

The ahi came topped with a dusting of pistachio crumble and diced pieces of compressed watermelon. At first, it seemed an odd combination, but the saltiness and crunch of the pistachios, paired with the juicy pop of watermelon and melt-in-your-mouth decadence of freshly-caught ahi was fairly brilliant. A paint stroke of yuzu on the side of the plate added both a nice aesthetic touch and a tasty place to push your tuna.

The sea scallops were perfectly pan seared and golden (with that nice seared ring around the edges). They sliced easily, firm, but tender and juicy, with a mild sweetness. Topped with a fresh corn salad with roasted poblano and a touch of fresh jalapeño.

The corn was as fresh as if it had been cut straight from a summer cob. The sweet corn, balanced with the richness of the sea scallops and spicy kick of jalapeño, gave the plate a refreshing balance of sweet and spicy.

After the first two courses, we knew we were in for a wellthought-out journey, driven by Chef Svensson. There was a sense of camaraderie in the dining room, as if we were all taking a journey together — each table its own raft down the same culinary river. We watched, in awe, as servers brought out impressive shared entrées to the tables around us. To our left, two men were served a whole fried snapper, prepared tableside on a rolling cart. To our right, a woman was served a giant tagine in a hand-painted ceramic dish, the aroma wafting out as the lid was lifted.

Our second course — two more small plates — ventured into more rich and savory territory. The first was a Fritto Misto. For those of you (like us), who have never experienced a Fritto Misto, it is traditionally a combination of lightly fried fish and seafood, mixed with other fresh ingredients. In Terra Mare’s case, the Fritto Misto had mango, radish, cilantro and a soy-lime vinaigrette amidst a mixture flaky white fish and thin rings of squid, all lightly fried and crispy (like a light tempura). In Svensson’s version, the fried seafood was also dusted with some sort of paprika and spices, giving each

bite a savory little kick.

After three seafood dishes, the crispy pork belly was a nice departure from the “mar” side of the menu and our first step into the “terra.” The pork belly had a perfect, crispy sear. The fat and glaze had caramelized the outside, while the inside was rich and indulgent — a great segue into our entrées.

My boyfriend opted for the New York Strip steak, aged 28 days, seared and served with a whipped herb butter and mixed roasted potatoes. I chose the sea bass with a sweet miso glaze, served with forbidden rice and baby bok choy. The bok choy was a bit bitter for my tastes, though I could see its purpose in counterbalancing the sweet.

For dessert, a light and airy key-lime cheesecake (a small, more modern, bite-sized dome) was a nice conclusion to the Terra Mar excursion. While I personally feel the cheesecake lacked the tart punch I have come to expect with anything labeled key-lime, the lightness of the whipped cream cheese was refreshing.

By the end of our Terra Mare journey, my head felt in the clouds while my body felt weighted. With the restaurant’s oceanside location, we were able to meander our pleasantly-plump bodies across the street to stroll barefoot in the sand. We laid on the beach and watched the stars, which felt the perfect ending to such a decadent and whimsical excursion. Y Terra Mare is located at 551 N. MAN: No, Mr. Belmont is busy, I’m afraid. I’m his assistant. Philip Varon.

ROBERTA: Why are you afraid?

PHILIP: I beg your pardon?

ROBERTA: You said you were afraid.

PHILIP: Um, it was just an expression. Now how can I help you?

ROBERTA: Well, it’s kind of personal.

PHILIP: Kind of personal. Um, can you tell me the subject, in general?

ROBERTA: Well ... Mr. Belmont owes me money.

PHILIP: Walter owes you money?

ROBERTA: Very good, Mr. Varon.

PHILIP: May I ask – generally, that is – how much?

ROBERTA: Two dollars and forty cents.

PHILIP: Pampers.

ROBERTA: The way you repeat things. “Pampers.” That was just plain outstanding, the way you said it. “Pampers.” A cross between concern and conviction, I’d say. Hasn’t anyone ever told you how good you are at repeating things, Mr. Varon?

PHILIP: No. No one has ever ... Mrs. Finley, can you tell me how Mr. Belmont incurred this debt?

ROBERTA: (DIGS INTO HANDBAG, PULLS OUT LARGE ENVELOPE) Sure. See, I sent him a play that I wrote. It was called, “Vegetable Bloat.” Do you remember it?

PHILIP: I only read manuscripts when Mr. Belmont wants my opinion.

ROBERTA: Well, I sent in “Vegetable Bloat” in this self-addressed

stamped envelope, like you’re told to do if you want the manuscript returned, right? But by the time Mr. Belmont returned it, the postal rates had gone up three times.

PHILIP: Three ti -(STOPS) ROBERTA: Wow, nothing gets by you, does it?

PHILIP: Um ... when did you send us your play, Mrs. Finley.

ROBERTA: Valentine’s Day! I’ll never forget that. See, “Vegetable Bloat” is a love story: lamb chop lover falls for a vegan vegetarian.

Sending it on Valentine’s Day just seemed so appropriate!

PHILIP: But Valentine’s Day was only –ROBERTA: Of 2014. Valentine’s Day, 2014. Four years and two months ago. (NO RESPONSE) Shall we call Guinness?

PHILIP: Mrs. Finley ...

ROBERTA: See, that’s why I didn’t understand his rejection slip.

It said something like my content not being consistent with the broad range of material he’s considering for this season. But I didn’t know if he was talking about 2014 or 2018.

Anyway, when I sent the play, the postage was one dollar and ten cents. Now it has gone up to three dollars and fifty cents. When the mailman delivered the manuscript, he told me that I’d have to give him an additional two dollars and forty cents. Which I did. So I came to see Mr. Belmont. To get reimbursed.

PHILIP: Mrs. Finley, this theatre receives hundreds of manuscripts each year.

ROBERTA: I never bothered you before. I mean, I e-mailed a manuscript just before Albert was born — he’s now nine — but I never received it back. That’s why I sent “Vegetable Bloat” with a stamped return envelope.

PHILIP: Yes, as we grow, we keep getting more and more – ROBERTA: You see, I was very impressed by what Mr. Belmont said in the Dramatist Guild Quarterly in its millennial edition in 2000: “Any artistic director who does not read every manuscript himself or herself should not be running a theatre.”

ince 2010, the City of Pompano Beach and its Community Redevelopment Agency have been working to revitalize the beachfront that stretches from Atlantic Boulevard to just north of the Pompano Pier, an area which, over the years, had become blighted and derelict. The goal was to create pedestrian-friendly areas for residents and visitors to dine, shop and enjoy the beach. After carrying out extensive improvement projects, the city is now beginning to see its ambitious plans to transform the beachside fall into place, and more and more businesses are being attracted to the area.

At the heart of this transformation is the Pompano Beach Fishing Village, a private sector development project currently underway on a 6-acre site next to the Pompano pier. It will include two new restaurants directly on the beach. The Pompano Beach House is anticipated to open by March, and the groundbreaking of Oceanic is expected to take place this month. They will be located on the spot once occupied by Fisherman’s Wharf, which was the area’s only oceanfront restaurant, but was damaged by Hurricane Wilma in 2005, and never reopened.

“These restaurants are destined to become South Florida landmarks,” said Tim Hernandez, a principal in Pompano Pier Associates, a Delray Beach-based firm that was selected by the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency to lease and develop the commercial space in the Fishing Village.

The Fishing Village will also be home to other retailers, such as a chocolate shop, a gourmet burger restaurant and a beach goods store, all of which will be breaking ground soon. The big news came when a developer recently committed to opening a Hilton hotel on the site of what is now a large municipal parking lot. Expected to be completed in 2020, it will be the first hotel to be built in the area since 1965.

Before all this could happen, the city had to lay the groundwork, based on a master plan for the redevelopment of the beach area that was created in 2008. In 2013, the city completed streetscape improvements to the section of Pompano Beach Boulevard that lies between Atlantic Boulevard and NE Fifth Street, north of the pier. The boulevard was narrowed, the sidewalks were broadened, the landscaping was enhanced and the

dune system along the beachfront was restored and made more resilient to the environment.

The beach pavilions and the children’s play area next to the pier were refurbished, and “The Great Lawn” – an artificial turf gathering area with an interactive splash pad – was built at the boulevard’s south end. On-street parking was also added.

The portion of Atlantic Boulevard between Federal Highway and the beach was also improved. It went from six lanes to four lanes so that two lanes would align directly with the bridge, which only has two lanes in each direction. The lane reduction also moved onstreet parking off Atlantic Boulevard and into the side streets so it wouldn’t interfere with traffic. The sidewalks were widened and nicer medians were built with more elaborate landscaping. As part of the upgrades on Atlantic

Boulevard and Pompano Beach Boulevard, utility wires were placed underground and more attractive streetlights with better light coverage for pedestrians and vehicles were installed.

In order to accommodate the redevelopment of the beachside, Fire Station 11 and the beach branch of the city’s library, which were on the site of the future Fishing Village, had to be relocated to a parcel on the Oceanside Parking Lot between A1A and North Riverside Drive.

The city also built the $21.5 million Pier Parking Garage, which is part of the Fishing Village, and is being called ‘iconic’ because of its attention-grabbing design. Completed in June 2016, the 663-space garage was the “crown jewel” in terms of setting the stage and attracting developer interest, said Horacio Danovich, the city’s capital improvement program manager. >>>

Atlantic Boulevard Bridge Enhancements

Anticipated completion date: End 2018.

The Atlantic Boulevard Bridge is considered an important element in the redevelopment area, and is undergoing upgrades to make it a more attractive feature and a symbolic ‘welcome’ for visitors to the beachfront. The project, which was launched in December, will include improvements to the bridge’s north and south façades, tender house and system lighting. The concrete side barriers will be replaced with more open railings that offer pedestrians and vehicles better views of the Intracoastal. Colorful design elements will also be added, such as large tensioned sails at each end of the bridge (four total), computerized up-lighting, a marine-themed mural and land-based lighting.

The plans also include a pedestrian waterfront promenade under the east side of the bridge that will connect restaurants, shops and other amenities from the south to the north. A sidewalk known as the “Trailway to the Waterway” will also be constructed. The sloped sidewalk will lead down from Atlantic Boulevard to the promenade along the Intracoastal.

The cost to complete all of the enhancements is

$5 million, which will be funded by the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency. The project will be carried out by Currie Sowards Aguila Architects, the Delray Beach firm that designed the Pompano Beach Pier Parking Garage.

The sails on the bridge will echo the canvas sails on the exterior of the parking garage. It is hoped that if the artwork on the bridge is well-received, it can be carried over to the 14th Street Causeway Bridge and the Hillsboro Inlet Bridge.

Work on the bridge that requires a partial lane closure will be done in the off season, and only during off-peak hours. Daily boat traffic will not be affected.

This beach goods megastore offers all the necessities for a day at the beach. Housed in a two-story corner building that includes a rotunda-like section with floor-to-ceiling plateglass windows, the store will sell everything from bathing suits, beach towels, suntan products and beach chairs, to T-shirts, beach sandals, resort wear and souvenirs. It will carry major brands in surfing performance gear and fashion wear, such as Quicksilver, Reef, Lost and Vans, and will stock top fishing brands like Huk, Avid and Guy Harvey.

Alvin’s Island also has its own fashion line for the beach and pool, featuring cover-ups, dresses, and women’s mixand-match swimwear.

The upper floor of the store will be dedicated to water sports equipment, including surfboards, kiteboards, boogie boards, bodyboards and stand-up paddleboards. The store plans to have a kiosk on the beach with various boards for rent, and may offer lessons. Alvin’s Island in the Pompano Beach Fishing Village is part of a Miami Beach-based chain that operates 36 “tropical department stores” in beach towns throughout the southeastern United States.

Kilwins

Anticipated opening date: End 2018.

When Don and Katy Kilwin opened their flagship store in 1947 in northern Michigan, they earned a reputation for purveying high-quality chocolate, fudge and ice cream made on site from their own recipes. Today, the company’s heritage continues in over 120 stores nationwide. The Pompano Beach Fishing Village location, owned and operated by South African-born Sean and Jody Kotzen of Pompano Beach, will offer all the traditional Kilwins confections, freshly made right in the store, in a nostalgic Americana setting.

The selection of treats includes: assorted chocolates, creamy Mackinac Island Fudge paddled and loafed on marble tables; Granny Smith apples hand-dipped in caramel that’s cooked in traditional copper kettles, hand-crafted nut brittles; pretzels dipped in milk, dark or white chocolate; and the signature Nutcracker Sweets, which combines freshly-popped corn, almonds, pecans and caramel. The store will also serve over 40 flavors of Kilwins Original Recipe ice cream, which is made in the flagship kitchen using only fresh antibiotic-free, rbST-free milk and cream from family farms. The ice cream will be served in homemade waffle cones with a choice of chocolate and caramel toppings. It will also be used to make milkshakes, sodas and floats.

The store will carry Kilwins’ handcrafted ice-cream cakes available in six varieties, as well as a number of sugar-free and no-sugar-added confections.

<<< The parking garage project also included the creation of two new pedestrian-friendly, intersecting streets – Pier Street and Seabreeze Way – that run through the Fishing Village. Pier Street will be used to link the Pompano pier to the Intracoastal Waterway and the city’s new water taxi service that was launched last month. To facilitate safe pedestrian crossing of A1A, the intersection of A1A and Pier Street is being redesigned, and will include relocating an existing traffic signal at the corner of NE 2nd Street, just south of the intersection.

The city plans to have the project completed by the end of 2019.

The reconstruction of the Pompano pier, which began last May, will be the last major component of the city’s beachfront redevelopment effort. The city has invested close to $70 million in the improvements, including all the planning, studies and design.

Tim Hernandez of Pompano Pier Associates estimates the new Fishing Village development will bring $40 million in private investment to the city. In addition, it is expected to stimulate significant further redevelopment on privately owned land in the immediate area, he said.

So far, there are about a handful of spaces still available for lease in the Fishing Village: a 6,100-squarefoot space with ocean views that will probably be a restaurant; a 1,300-square-foot space that might be filled with a health-food restaurant; and on the ground floor of the parking garage, four spaces for restaurant and retail use directly across the street from the future Hilton hotel.

Another city project that will complement what is happening on the beachside is the enhancement of the Atlantic Boulevard Bridge that got underway last month. In addition, a private developer is building a new waterfront dining and retail complex on South Riverside Drive, at the southeast corner of the Atlantic Boulevard Bridge.

With the city’s vision for a reinvented beach area becoming a reality, Pompano is set to become a destination that’s on everyone’s radar.

Alvin’s Island

Pompano Beach House Anticipated opening date: End January/beginning February 2018.

Located right on the beach, north of the Pompano Beach fishing pier, the Beach House is set to deliver casual dining in a fun atmosphere. The two-story structure, done in tropical Old Florida style, will have an openair concept offering sweeping views of the ocean, pier and Hillsboro Lighthouse. The first floor, which includes a bar area, will have “garage door” floor-to-ceiling glass windows that, when opened, disappear

into the ceiling and create the feeling of sitting on the beach.

The second floor will be a rooftop bar with a lounge feel and tiered seating to maximize the ocean views. At night, to add to the ambiance, which is inspired by surf culture, vintage and recent surf movies will be projected, without the sound, on the back wall of a live entertainment space.

The downstairs, which has 225 seats, will feature burgers,

steaks, ribs, chicken and fish cooked on a live oak woodburning grill. Everything from the salad dressings to the soups and desserts, will be made in-house from scratch. The upstairs bar, which has 125 seats, will offer lighter fare, such as flatbreads, sushi and a raw bar.

On Sundays, there will be a brunch menu and bottomless mimosas downstairs, while the upstairs will have stations for build-your-own mimosas

and omelets, plus a DJ or live music. There are plans to start Saturday morning yoga sessions on the upstairs deck and surf lessons on the beach about a month after the restaurant’s grand opening.

The Beach House is owned and operated by Brimstone Restaurant Group, which also owns Grille 401 Las Olas in Fort Lauderdale, the Piñon Grill in Boca Raton and Brimstone Woodfire Grill in Doral and Pembroke Pines.

Anticipated completion date: Early 2019.

Since May 2017, the Pompano Beach fishing pier, built in 1963, has been undergoing reconstruction. The spans are being demolished and replaced a section at a time, working from the west to the east. The new $11.5 million pier will be 896 feet long (virtually the same length as before), but it will be four feet higher than the old one to withstand sea level rise and storm surges. The new pier will also be close to 50 percent wider than the old one to reduce the risk of people getting hooked by a cast fishing line as they stroll along the pier.

The completed pier will have shade structures, benches, marine-related artwork, Wi-Fi, an underwater camera for watching fish, and security cameras. The end of the new pier will be shaped like the head of a stylized pompano, the fish after which the city was named.

The end of the old pier had been closed to the public since 2012, after sustaining damage from Hurricane Sandy. The new pier will complement the other developments in Pompanoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beachfront area, and is expected to draw customers to nearby businesses.

A new outdoor beach bar with full-service, casual come-as-you-are dining will be located just south of the Pompano Beach pier. The beach bar owners will take over and renovate the building

that currently houses the pier concession, and will use it as their kitchen. The existing deck will be replaced with a much larger one, and the

surrounding area will be completely replanted with lush, tropical landscaping. On the new deck, there will be seating around a circular pavilion-style bar, plus tables shaded by canvas triangle-shaped sun sails, accommodating a total of 150-200 guests. To set the vibe, there will also be a bandstand for live entertainment, such as acoustic music or steel drums, every evening of the week.

The bar will serve tropical cocktails, but with a modern twist. There will also be local and craft draft beer. The food menu will feature handheld items, such as sandwiches, creative tacos, hamburgers and oysters, plus fresh fish and salads.

Currently in the design phase, the name of the new beach bar hasn’t been released yet. It is owned by Raleigh, North Carolina-based LM Restaurants, the same firm that is opening the Oceanic on the north side of the pier. The owner of the pier concession will be opening an upscale sub shop on the ground floor of the Pier Parking Garage.

BurgerFi

Anticipated opening date: Fourth quarter 2018.

Since opening its first location in 2011 in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, BurgerFi is one of the nation’s fastest-growing gourmet burger chains, and now has over 100 restaurants. Based in North Palm Beach, BurgerFi is known for using patties made of 100 percent certified Angus beef that comes from free-range, grassfed cattle that are never treated with steroids, growth hormones, chemicals or antibiotics. The chefdriven menu offers a variety of craft burgers, as well as vegetarian options, Vienna hot dogs, fresh hand-cut fries, local craft beer and wine, double-battered onion rings and frozen custards.

The BurgerFi at the Pompano Beach Fishing Village will have a large open-air covered porch overlooking Pier Street and Pompano Beach Boulevard. Like all BurgerFi restaurants, it will have a sleek, modern design that reflects the company’s commitment to eco-friendly practices. Some of the sustainable elements include: eye-catching, 10-foot wide

ceiling fans that consume less energy; walls paneled with number 2 pine lumber, one of the most renewable timber sources available; red chairs made from upcycled plastic Coca-Cola bottles; large picnic tables and four-top tables made from upcycled milk jugs; and energy efficient LED lighting. In addition, the peanut oil used in the kitchen will be recycled into biodiesel fuel. The new BurgerFi will be owned

by Foiled By The Burger LLC, which also owns the BurgerFi in Lighthouse Point.

Pompano Beach Water Taxi

Began operating in December 2017.

The long-awaited hop-on and hop-off water taxi service along the Intracoastal Waterway was launched last month. The water taxi service will run as far north as Lighthouse Point and as far south as Fort Lauderdale. It makes about 11 stops, providing connectivity to hotels, restaurants, and the future Fishing Village near the Pompano Beach pier. At the southernmost stop on the itinerary, Bokamper’s Sports Bar & Grill in Fort Lauderdale, passengers can connect to the Water Taxi of Fort Lauderdale, which goes all the way to Hollywood.

Tickets to ride the Pompano Beach Water Taxi cost $20 per person, with a discounted price of $15 for Pompano Beach residents. Tickets are valid all day, and can be purchased online (pompanobeachwatertaxi.com), onboard, at the Pompano Beach Water Taxi’s office inside the Sands Harbor Resort, and at participating restaurants. The service runs seven days a week, beginning at 10am, and the last pick-up from the itinerary’s north and south endpoints is at 10pm. The water taxi and the stations are handicap accessible.

My key strategy points were, number one, to wait. I always asked myself, ‘Why am I talking?’

I feel like a lot of these people [the players] can implode on themselves…You can’t hide your personality out there. So if you are not conscientious of that, then all your annoying traits are going to come out. I mean literally, you’re living with these people for a month if you make it that far.

Jeff Probst taught me the word wait. ‘Why am I talking?’ as his team of “Healers” rows a boat to their camp on a remote island in Fiji. The “Healers” are up against a team of “Heroes” and a team of “Hustlers” in this edition of the popular reality show, which tests players physical, mental, social, strategical and manipulative skills as they all compete for a million dollar prize.

and freshly-speared fish. Personalities clash. Tears fall. Spirits are broken. But in the end, one player rises victorious. This is Dr. Mike’s fantasy.

“Winning Survivor is the biggest dream of my life,” he says in the first episode. “My wife thinks I’m crazy for doing this. My kids think I’m going to die. But, I’m going to rise to the occasion and win.”

In honor of Pompano Beach’s own doctor and “Survivor” contestant, Pompano! magazine interviewed Dr. Mike about his strategies, thoughts and life.

Dr. Mike hasn’t missed a single season of “Survivor.”

He started his practice, Z Urology (the Coral Springs location) about 12 and a half years ago and has turned it into the largest practice in Broward County. To recognize the accomplishment, the Broward County Commissioners proclaimed Oct. 10 officially Z Urology Day in Broward County.

Dr. Mike opened the Pompano Beach location of Z Urology just about six months before Season 35 of “Survivor” started casting.

Dr. Mike considers himself a fan. “There are fans, super fans and super duper fans. I would consider myself a fan,” he said. “I’ve never gone back and re-watched any episodes. I can’t tell you who got out on which episode of Season 6, which is what a lot of people can do.”

Dr. Mike believes there are a few key facets that make “Survivor” so addicting, successful and longlasting: “First is Jeff Probst. Jeff Probst, I believe, makes the show.

He is a fantastic narrator and storyteller.”

“Second is the casting — the characters. If you put 18 people that are basically similar, or 18 people who aren’t good story tellers or exciting to watch, it

would be just another challenge show on MTV. Casting is picking the right mix of people on the show each season.”

“Third, is that it’s the first challenge reality show out there.

I think what has happened — and maybe its just in my age group and demographic — is that now people who are my age and used to watch it, now watch it with their kids. It’s a show that has to do with fulfilling the American dream. Survivor is a show that you fulfill this adventure of a lifetime. It is not just stimulating because of the challenges, but it’s mentally stimulating, because it’s teaching you about different personalities…personalities and human dynamics.

The restaurant’s exposed wood framing is reminiscent of the German half-timbered architectural style and the walls are lined with classic German beer steins.

For a traditional German meal, try the wienerschnitzel — it’s divine a lightly breaded veal cutlet sautéed in lemon butter and topped with homemade brown gravy. The spaetzle (German noodles) are a real homemade treat and not to be missed — throw a little of that brown gravy on them and they could be a meal unto themselves. The red cabbage is both classically sweet and sour and there are other side options too including potato dumplings, potato salad and even hot potato salad. As you look around, you can’t help but get the feeling that most of the patrons are returning customers. And the next time we get a hankering for some schnitzel, we know where to go. True story: A faithful reader called our office with an advertising lead. She had recently dined at new Vietnamese restaurant on Federal Highway and loved it. Since she wished for the restaurant to succeed, she advised them to advertise in Lighthouse Point magazine. Thanks to her glowing recommendation, we decided to have a staff lunch at Pho Lavie. We were positively delighted.

What we tasted

We started with an order of summer rolls and egg rolls. The summer rolls are filled with vermicelli noodles, pork, shrimp, lettuce, fresh herbs and expertly wrapped in rice paper and served with a hoisin peanut sauce. The egg rolls are filled with pork and shrimp, fried and served with a spicy fish sauce. We were positively giddy with condiment choices. Our server was kind enough to teach us on the proper way to eat one. The egg rolls are served with giant greens which are used to wrap the egg rolls. If you wrap your egg rolls in greens, you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to feel bad about eating fried food. For the main event, DANIELLE chose the classic Vietnamese soup, Pho tai bo vien. It was a giant bowl of soup with rare beef, meatballs, rice noodles, fresh scallions, cilantro, basil and bean sprouts. RICHARD opted for a vermicelli noodle bowl topped with beef, shrimp julienned cucumber, carrots, scallions and an abundance of fresh herbs SUSAN was thrilled with her authentic bahn mi sandwich of grilled pork with carrot, cucumber, red onion and cilantro and a crusty baguette. pho

Thanks to its striking architectural design, this waterfront restaurant looks like an ocean liner that has pulled up alongside the north side of the Pompano Beach pier.

Oceanic’s contemporary, open interior, which includes windows spanning from floor to ceiling, will offer expansive and uninterrupted ocean views. The menu will focus on fresh seafood and steaks prepared on a wood-fire grill.

The second floor, which will have its own kitchen and a covered deck overlooking the ocean, will be used as a private space for special events, such as birthday parties, wedding receptions and corporate or charity events.

Accommodating 300-400 people, it can be used as one large space for a single event or be divided into three separate spaces for simultaneous events. There will be seating for 400 people on the first floor, which includes a covered ocean-facing deck for al fresco dining.

Oceanic is owned by Raleigh, North Carolina-based LM Restaurants, whose founders, Lou and Joy Moshakos, began their restaurant careers in Deerfield Beach 40 years ago.

Suites commitment to sustainability. The hotel will also have a rooftop deck with 360-degree views of the ocean, the pier, the Hillsboro Lighthouse and the Intracoastal Waterway. There are plans to have a bar on the rooftop deck. The Hilton will be the first new hotel in the area since the opening of the Sands Harbor Resort & Marina in 1965.

It is being developed by father-and-son team Aashish and Girish Patel of the Fort Myers-based Madhav Group.

Pier Parking Garage

Garage opened: June 2016.

Tourism Visitor Center to open: 2018 After the completion of Pompano Beach’s $12 million streetscape improvement project along one mile of downtrodden beachfront in 2013, thousands of visitors frequented the revitalized area, and parking revenues increased dramatically.

To address the additional parking needs, as well as the future parking demand from the Fishing Village development, the city decided to construct its first public parking garage, just west of the pier. The $21.5 million landmark project, which created 663 parking spaces, is being funded by revenue collected from all of the city’s metered parking facilities.

The new parking garage was a critical step in setting the stage for the redevelopment of the beachside.

The building’s bold design was created by Currie Sowards Aguila Architects, a Delray Beach-based firm known for transforming utilitarian facilities into iconic structures. The exterior of the fivestory garage is adorned with large LED-lit canvas sails and a giant aquatic mural. It also has a landscaped rooftop deck and a glass elevator overlooking the ocean. On the ground floor of the garage, directly across the street from the future Hilton hotel, there are spaces available to lease for restaurant and retail use.

The city’s first Tourism Visitor Center, which will open to the public in 2018, will also be on the ground floor of the parking garage. >>>

The Pompano Beach Fishing Village will be home to a dual-branded Hilton hotel. The five-story hotel will be built on what is currently a cityowned parking lot, just south of the new Pier Parking Garage. One section of the L-shaped building will be a Hilton Home2Suites, offering 90 rooms that have kitchens and work areas, and are well-suited for families on extended stays; the other section will be a Tru by Hilton, offering 60 smaller, streamlined rooms geared toward travelers with a “millennial mindset.” The Tru focus is on the large colorful lobby designed to be a social hub, with zones for eating, playing, working and lounging, and lots of charging stations for tech devices. Designated pet-friendly rooms will be offered by Home2Suites.

The large overhang of the hotel’s entrance will serve as a deck with a rectangular saline swimming pool, a hot tub and cabanas. The pool will be maintained with natural minerals instead of chemicals, which is in keeping with the Home2

Anticipated opening date: Late 2018 or early 2019.

A new upscale dining and retail complex, called Harbor Promenade, is currently being built on the southeastern corner of the Atlantic Boulevard Bridge. The first phase of the project is a restaurant called Harbor NYC, located at 101 S. Riverside Drive, along the Intracoastal Waterway. It will have 150 indoor seats, as well as 350 outdoor seats, and feature live entertainment.

The retail shops will be located on Atlantic Boulevard between South Riverside Drive and Hibiscus Avenue. Once the retail area is completed, there are plans to build a seafood restaurant on the waterfront parcel just south of Harbor NYC. There will be room for at least 10 boats to dock alongside the two restaurants.

The project is being developed on what was 2.2 acres of vacant grassy property. The Canada-based company behind the project, Group Tsatas, also owns Madisons New York Bar & Grill in Boca Raton, which opened in 2013.

Measures are being taken to facilitate safe access to Harbor Promenade by cars coming east over the Atlantic Boulevard Bridge. The portion of South Riverside Drive that runs along the project site will go from a two-lane to a one-lane traffic pattern, so drivers will have the whole width of the road to negotiate the sharp right turn immediately after the bridge.

This gourmet sub shop will occupy a space on the ground floor of the Pier Parking Garage, directly across from the new Hilton hotel. The subs will be made with Boar’s Head-only meats, cheeses and condiments, on bread baked fresh on the premises. Todd Weiss, the owner of Surfside Subs, has been working with Boar’s Head for the past two years to develop a menu that will include items not found on typical subs, such as London Broil roast beef and Havarti cheese. Guests will be able to order subs from a set menu or have them custommade, with either traditional or innovative meats and cheeses.

They’ll also be able to get boxed lunches to take to the beach, like the Beachfront Combo, which includes a sub, cookie, drink and chips.

A modern, high-end beach décor is planned for the sub shop, which will have 12 indoor seats and 12 outdoor seats.

Beverages will include all-natural frozen drinks – strawberry, piña colada, mango or lemonade – and Dr. Brown sodas. A lobster roll will also be featured on the menu. Gluten-free bread will be available, to go along with the Boar’s Head meat, which is gluten-free.

Weiss plans to do catering for corporate meetings and events at local hotels and businesses.

The concession that Weiss currently owns and operates on the south side of the Pompano Beach pier will become part of an outdoor beach bar developed by the owners of the new Oceanic restaurant. Y

On the show, Dr. Mike is cast as the quirky, sometimes annoying, but ultimately lovable dork. In the first episode, the show’s affable host Jeff Probst asks Dr. Mike what he does for a living, to which Dr. Mike replies matter-of-factly: “I’m a sex doctor.” After a chorus of laughter from the other players, Dr. Mike clarifies: “I’m a urologist. I specialize in male sexual dysfunction and infertility.”

Pompano Beach-ians can be proud; Dr. Mike, who is the chief surgeon of Pompano Beach’s Z Urology practice on Federal Highway, is our city’s own sex doctor. And as of the 13th episode, is still a contestant on the show, chiseling away at other players and gunning for his chance on the podium. As of Lighthouse Point magazine’s print date, Dr. Mike is competing as one of just five players left.

While he’s been at the bottom a few times, Dr. Mike keeps making comebacks and has made a few big strategic moves. In the 12th episode, Dr. Mike went so far as to throw another player’s immunity idol in the fire at tribal council, ultimately rendering her vulnerable and cast off the island. And in the first several episodes, Dr. Mike shined as a puzzle master, earning his team of Healers three consecutive wins in puzzle challenges.

While he’s been a bit tactical, he’s never come across as calculating or utterly disloyal, so he’s still seemingly well-liked (which could ultimately play to his favor in the end of the game when formerly cast-off players, and later viewers of the show, get a stake in the votes).

Flying slightly under the radar, he also hasn’t been seen as a huge threat, so Dr. Mike could very well go far.

But as fans of the show know, anything can happen on “Survivor.”

Dr. Mike took strategy tips from Jeff Probst by listening to podcasts and interviews.

“When you’re trying to train for a Superbowl or the Olympics, you’re going to listen to your coach. And who is the coach on “Survivor”? It’s really Jeff Probst.

I listened to every Jeff Probst interview I could find to hear how to strategize.”

“My key strategy points were, number one, to wait.

I always asked myself, ‘Why am I talking?’ I feel like a lot of these people [the players] can implode on themselves…You can’t hide your personality out there.

So if you are not conscientious of that, then all your annoying traits are going to come out. I mean literally, you’re living with these people for a month if you make it that far. Jeff Probst taught me the word wait.

‘Why am I talking?’

“The second one was to just lead with kindness.

Every morning, no matter how bad the situation is, wake up and say good morning to everybody. Say hello. Be nice. You are going to vote them out, but just be nice to them.”

“The third strategy was have justifiable ethics. I think this is a big one. You might vote people out, but you have to be able to justify, in your mind, and really to America, why you voted them out…You have to have your own individual line in the sand that you won’t cross — even to win a million dollars.”

Dr. Mike’s “line in the sand” was to never tolerate bullying of anybody.

“In previous seasons there have been some meanspirited people out there that have made fun of people and their weight or being unattractive. That was a big no-no for me. We’re all out there to play a game. We’re all living together. You should just be nice to each other. My big line in the sand was, for no reason, to pick on people.”

Dr. Mike believes his skills as a urologist and surgeon have benefitted him on the show.

“In the first two episodes, we saw my team come from behind to win the puzzle challenges. Obviously as a doctor you’re constantly doing puzzles and using your brain to solve issues. At the same time, my surgical skills did come into play in the first challenge in holding the puzzle steady and navigating the ball into the appropriate holes.

“As far as the social game…I specialize in sexual dysfunction and infertility. I spend my days talking to people about their most sensitive subjects and having them, in three minutes, be willing to open up to me about the things they are most insecure about in life.

I have to be able to sit down with people and make them feel comfortable. I have to be able to respond to them in an intelligent, empathic way. And I think that really played in to my game.”

Dr. Mike considers himself “naturally empathetic,” but also admits controlling his emotions is a learned skill with both benefits and consequences.

“As a doctor, you have to be able to separate

yourself from your work in order to function as a human being. You have to be able to walk from one room, where you are telling someone that they have cancer, into another room and congratulate them for their wife being pregnant. You have to feel sad for the one, and happy for the other. That is a trait that is learned. The switching back and forth, unfortunately, can get pushed on your family life as well. If you have the ability to switch on and off your emotions, unfortunately, it becomes easier to switch on and off your emotions in every aspect of your life.”

Dr. Mike thinks it’s hard for a lot of players to go back to reality after playing “Survivor.”

“I think a lot of people come out of the game with trust issues. You’re surrounded by people. You’re living with people. You’re sharing your most intimate moments with people, that, at the end of the day, you are competing with for a million dollars. can you ever really trust them? Then you go back to your normal life, surrounded by people that you love, that you can completely trust 100 percent, but it is hard to get back to that normal.”

Dr. Mike didn’t think about what he will do with the money if he wins.

“I went out there with the thought that this would be the adventure of a lifetime and a unique experience.

Yes, I went out there planing to win. And yes, I went out there hopeful, but I never really thought about what I wanted to do with the money. I never earmarked the money for one thing or another. I didn’t want to get ahead of myself.”

Dr. Mike said the most surprising thing about playing “Survivor” was the “speed of the game.”

“You know you think you’re going to go out there and the first couple days everyone is going to get to know each other, but the game is played from the first second it starts. It caught me by surprise a little bit.”

Dr. Mike’s kids’ reactions to him going on the show: “My kids love it. Even the teenage girl that acts like she’s embarrassed. I mean, your dad is on television.

They haven’t shown me too much in my underwear.

That was her biggest fear. She was like, ‘Dad, keep your pants on. Don’t run around in your underwear.’

And I typically have my pants on. They are excited.

They are super proud of their dad, which I don’t usually see. It really gets me choked up a little…to think that my kids are proud of me. Y

Local businesses often have the urgency to work together and patronize other local establishments. Chains, however, often get lost in the numbers and high sales, they usually buy from other corporations, and in most cases have compromised the personal touch offered at your local establishments.

I had to ask Papa what was his favorite part about running a small family business for the last 42 years? He compassionately replied, “I have been giving the opportunity to encompass my entire family in our business, which has kept my family close-knitted. I have been able to help promote growth and provide experience for our young individuals.

Papa has always welcomed students of all ages to join his family team. In the restaurant industry, it is very common to hire green youngsters lacking experience. Most of them come to Papa for their first job. Local restaurants and most small, family owned businesses are the perfect stomping ground for American teens to get a taste of today’s work ethics, acquire organizational skills and get the experience they need for future careers.

My father and I have been blessed to have such a great community full of locals who support each other. “Most of all we are truly proud not only to be a part of our community, but that the community has become part of us.”
