As we usher in the holiday season, I am thrilled to share that the Orlando Ballet graces our cover this month, bringing the magic of The Nutcracker to life. This timeless performance captures the wonder and spirit of the season, making it a must-see for everyone.
This month, I want to recognize the incredible team behind Winter Park City Magazine. Siria Andino has a talent for capturing the energy of the many community events we attend, showcasing the vibrancy of our area businesses and nonprofits. Wendy Davis of Bloom Events Co. curates truly unique and engaging events that bring us all together in unforgettable ways. Our interns, Brianna Streeter and Nicole Levitt, are invaluable, bringing fresh energy and support to our events and the magazine. And of course, my husband and biggest cheerleader, Benjamin Dils, who accepts the wild schedule that comes with being a publisher and encourages me every step of the way.
City Lifestyle is also kicking off its annual giving campaign, an effort that reaches across the nation to bring hope and support to those facing challenges this time of year. This initiative reminds us that even small acts of kindness can create big impacts—and together, we can spread joy to those who need it most.
For me, the holidays are a chance to slow down, reflect on the year, and reconnect with family and friends. It’s a season to appreciate simple moments and cherish traditions both old and new.
Wishing you a season filled with joy and warmth,
December 2024

As the cool breeze begins to whisper through the streets of Orlando, holiday décor starts to adorn storefronts, signaling the arrival of a cherished season. It’s officially Nutcracker season, and this December, the Orlando Ballet invites families to experience its spectacular production at the Dr. Phillips Center, running from December 6 to 22.
This year marks the second season of Artistic Director Jorden Morris’s vibrant retelling of the classic holiday tale, a production that promises to captivate audiences with breathtaking ballet and dazzling high-flying stunts. Picture snow globes, giant puppets, and a magical Ferris wheel— all crafted to create a whimsical world that celebrates the spirit of the season.
Three years in the making and boasting a multi-million dollar budget, this theatrical feast brings together tradition and innovation. Morris’s vision breathes new life into Tchaikovsky’s iconic score while preserving the story’s cherished elements. Clara, the beloved protagonist, is no longer just a passive character; she embarks on thrilling adventures with her prince, even taking to the skies during pivotal moments.
Supported by Orlando Health, the official medical team for the Orlando Ballet, this production introduces eye-popping set pieces and moving characters that have never before graced Central Florida stages. Morris highlights his favorite aspect: the whimsical snow globes that twinkle throughout the performance, adding an extra layer of magic.
Collaborating with an elite design team— including Associate Artistic Director Lisa Thorn Morris, costume designer Robert Perdziola, and lighting designer Joseph Walls—Morris has crafted a visually stunning experience that rivals Broadway. The meticulous attention to detail is evident, from the towering, hand-painted Christmas tree adorned with 3D ornaments to the enchanting Mother Goose puppet that steals the show.
“This
The Nutcracker promises breathtaking ballet, dazzling stunts, whimsical snow globes, and a magical Ferris wheel— capturing the wonder of the holiday season.”
The production’s complexity required over a year of design and construction by artisans from across the globe. Each component, from the vibrant costumes to the intricate set pieces, was thoughtfully created to enhance the storytelling. Stunning visuals include dainty snowflakes in unique costumes, echoing the diversity found in nature, and a giant Ferris wheel with animated passengers that captures the wonder of childhood.
Morris’s dedication to fresh choreography was one of the most labor-intensive aspects of this reimagining. He crafted new movements that allow dancers to express themselves in lighter, more fluid costumes, reimagining cultural dances to reflect sophistication and grace.
As with all holiday traditions, the real magic happens when moments are shared with others. As a part of Orlando
Ballet’s mission to entertain, educate, and enrich the community when it comes to dance, a cornerstone of the season is a valuable partnership with Orange County Public Schools which invites approximately 16,000 second-grade students throughout Orange County to experience a live performance of The Nutcracker. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer to this enchanting tale, Orlando’s The Nutcracker promises to be a memorable highlight of the holiday season, filled with joy, wonder, and a celebration of the arts. Gather your loved ones, step into a world of enchantment, and celebrate the season with a production that truly embodies the spirit of the holidays. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this magical experience!

WEEKEND GETAWAY TO NEW SMYRNA BEACH: A STORY OF ART, FOOD, AND SUNSHINE
I am a beach girl. Growing up in Michigan, I experienced lakes, fishing, and hunting for Petoskey stones (IFYKYK, right?). But when I moved to Florida at 20, I had never been to the beach. When my new Disney co-workers asked if I wanted to “go to the beach,” I wasn’t sure what to expect. It was magical—listening to the waves, feeling the sun and sand on my skin. Now, you’ll find me here listening to JJ Grey and watching for dolphins.
So when Benjamin and I were invited to spend a weekend in New Smyrna Beach to share our experience with you, of course, I said YES! We stayed the last weekend of the month so we could also attend the wine walk. Our two-bedroom condo on the sixth floor of the Oceania Beach Club had spectacular views— both of the ocean and the people-watching below.
We kicked off our adventure with dinner at General Public House . Nestled on Canal Street, the restaurant’s Southern-inspired dishes, made with fresh Florida ingredients, set the tone for the weekend. We savored every bite, appreciating the blend of comfort food and local flavors. Full and happy, we headed back to our room and enjoyed the view from the balcony.
The next morning started with the best pastries from Mon Delice , an authentic French bakery. I couldn’t resist a buttery croissant, while Benjamin enjoyed their mini quiche—a perfect start to the day. After breakfast, I wandered Canal Street, exploring colorful galleries and studios at The Hub on Canal and Jane’s Art Center . I spent some time
with Richard England, Executive Director of The Hub, who shared insights about the amazing talent exhibited by Florida artists across various media.
After soaking up the art, we made our way to lunch at The Bounty , a speakeasy above Flagler Tavern, with views overlooking bustling Flagler Avenue below.
We couldn’t resist joining the Flagler Avenue Wine Walk —a delightful way to explore shops while sampling wine. We browsed boutiques like Friki Tiki and indulged in sweet treats at Zeno’s Boardwalk Sweet Shop
Later that afternoon, we toured SugarWorks Distillery , where we learned about the owner, Michael Scorsone and his passion for crafting small-batch spirits. The intimate tour was a highlight, and I’m pretty sure the old-fashioned I had was the best I’ve ever tasted.
We wrapped up the day with dinner at Norwood’s Treehouse Restaurant , a unique dining experience set among the treetops. Under a canopy of leaves, we feasted on the largest king crab leg we’ve ever seen, along with a perfectly cooked ribeye. Dessert was cheesecake topped with Fruity Pebbles—and trust me, you won’t regret trying it!
Live music also thrives in New Smyrna Beach, one of my favorite things! A Saturday night on Flagler Avenue offers the perfect chance for a bar crawl, from Peanuts to Flagler Tavern , dancing the night away.
“Exploring as locals always adds a fun twist, and even I found places I never knew about.”
Before heading back to Orlando, we visited The Baker’s Table , where chefs Jaime and Jeanette Quintana serve up a wonderful brunch. It was the perfect end to our weekend staycation.
I’ve been to New Smyrna Beach more times than I can count, but this visit felt special. Benjamin, who’s only lived in Orlando for a few years, loves discovering new towns with me. Exploring as locals always adds a fun twist, and even I found places I never knew about.
This weekend in New Smyrna Beach was the perfect getaway. Between the art, delicious meals, and a few shared laughs, we couldn’t have asked for more.
As the holiday season approaches, New Smyrna Beach transforms into a festive wonderland. From parades to seasonal markets and community celebrations, there are endless ways to enjoy the holidays. ARTICLE BY JUDITH SMELSER, PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER OF CENTRAL FLORIDA PUBLIC MEDIA
Central Florida Public Media is committed to empowering local residents through unbiased, fact-based journalism that informs decision-making and fosters participation in the civic and cultural life of our community. We are the only local nonprofit news organization serving our entire nine-county region. We take that responsibility very seriously because, as a nonprofit, everything we do is in the public interest.
We are locally owned and operated, and our roots in Central Florida run deep. We signed on the air almost 45 years ago as a radio station, 90.7 WMFE-FM, then called “FM 90 plus.” We have grown into a multimedia news outlet, with our content also freely available to everyone on cfpublic.org , all podcast platforms, social media and at community events. Earlier this year, we embraced a new name and brand to reflect the many ways we serve our community.
We believe journalism is a public service because we know a healthy civil society depends on access to trusted news and information. Communities with strong local news are more connected, less politically divided and more civically active, with higher voting rates and more participation in groups like the PTA and Neighborhood Watch.
Central Florida Public Media’s local journalists go in-depth on critical regional issues, including housing, homelessness, health care, education and the arts. Our new discussion show Engage offers unique voices and perspectives on local news and culture. Our popular podcast Are We There Yet? explores the wonder of space exploration. Our annual Tiny Desk Contest Central Florida Showcase event celebrates grassroots local music.
We are also committed to developing the next generation of journalists who will continue our mission in the years to come.
As a public service organization, we are committed to ensuring our region always has a reliable source of independent news, information, and civil discourse. We have significantly expanded our services, even as other news outlets have declined or disappeared entirely.
On Engage, which launched in February, host Cheryn Stone has spoken in depth with guests ranging from U.S. Senator Marco Rubio to Bach Festival Society of Winter Park’s Artistic Director John Sinclair to Angela White-Jones, the first Black president of the Greater Orlando Junior League.
Our new weekly podcast The Wrap, hosted by Assistant News Director Brendan Byrne, offers busy listeners the chance to catch up on the most important local stories in under 12 minutes.
Our new housing and homelessness reporter Lillian Hernández Caraballo amplifies the voices of unhoused residents and shines a light on those searching for solutions to the affordable housing crisis.
With community support and through collaboration with content partners, including NPR and the BBC, we are committed to keeping our community informed on questions of local, national and global importance.
Our commitment to the future of journalism drives us to nurture and support the next generation of journalists. This year, we launched the Emerging Journalists Fellowship, an exciting initiative giving new graduates and career changers the opportunity to jumpstart their careers in our newsroom. This paid, year-long program allows us to mentor new reporters with training and hands-on experience, preparing them to be ethical and impactful journalists.
We also have an award-winning partnership with UCF’s Nicholson School of Communication and Media on the “Sounds of Central Florida” initiative. Twice yearly, UCF journalism students pitch story ideas to our editors; the best are produced and featured on air and online.
During this time of sensationalism and divisive rhetoric, we aim to bring people together around civil discourse based on trusted facts. We are committed to listening first and amplifying voices from all parts of our community.
This election year, we are proud to lead regional participation in a national initiative called One Small Step, which invites people who disagree politically to sit together and record conversations about their lives. Residents from across the political spectrum are discovering they have more in common than they thought.
Many people are surprised to learn that Central Florida Public Media is not owned, controlled or subsidized by NPR, nor are we primarily funded by the government. We are an entirely independent, locally owned and operated nonprofit, and we pay NPR for the privilege of providing its high-quality programming to our region.
Our vital work leading Central Florida’s community conversation depends almost entirely on community support, with nearly 90% of funding coming from individual donors, foundations, and corporate sponsors in our region.
We believe Central Floridians deserve a top-class public media news organization, and the investments we’ve made have put us on that trajectory. I invite you to be part of the journey and support our mission by visiting cfpublic.org.
JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com
