Explore What Makes Windsor Shine

Explore: The Heartbeat of Discovery

If there's one word that lights a fire in me, it’s explore. It’s more than just a travel itch (though I’ve got that, too)—it’s a mindset. I believe that exploration doesn’t always mean hopping on a plane; sometimes it means picking up a new book, getting lost in conversation with someone unexpected, or turning left instead of right on your usual walk through Windsor.

Over the years, I’ve come to see exploration as essential to growth, personally and in our communities. Traveling has expanded my perspective, but some of my most meaningful discoveries have come from diving into the stories, places, and people right here at home. Windsor may be familiar, but when you pause and look a little closer, there’s always something new to learn or appreciate.

In this issue, we’re honoring that spirit of discovery.

We shine a light on Windsor Severance Fire Rescue, whose courageous team explores new training, tools, and strategies daily to keep us safe, reminding us that exploration is often a matter of heart and service.

We also journey back in time with Windsor History, uncovering stories that shaped our town. You can’t truly explore the present without understanding the past.

At Highland Meadows Grill , we soak in the vibrant energy of live music under the stars —an experience that makes exploring your own backyard feel like a mini escape.

Who doesn't love a good road trip?  Choose from a BMW or a Mini.  You can't go wrong with either style.

And we highlight Peterson Canvas & Awning, a local business helping people reimagine their outdoor spaces. They prove that exploration can be as simple as transforming a patio into a place of connection and relaxation.

My hope this month is that you permit yourself to explore—wherever and however that looks for you. Whether it’s a museum visit, a late-night concert, a conversation with a neighbor, or a walk down a street you’ve never noticed before… discovery is waiting.

Peterson Canvas & Awning

Improving the Comfort of Your Outdoor Oasis

BY

With summer finally arriving along the Front Range, everyone is eager to step outside and start enjoying their backyards. The idea of enhancing your outdoor living space is always appealing, and having welcoming shade on demand is certainly refreshing, especially when you’re a mile closer to the sun in Colorado’s mountainous terrain and desert climate.

Peterson Canvas & Awning has been serving the community since 1957 and is the most established awning company in Colorado’s Front Range and beyond,

servicing Colorado and part of Wyoming. Owner Natalia Crofut acquired the company in March of 2022. With an extensive background and history in construction and manufacturing, Natalia was aware of the potential to build on a business with deep roots in the community based on the history of their exceptional reputation. She still works directly with the previous owners in sales and promotion to continue to bridge the company’s long-standing history.

After connecting with Natalia to learn more about Peterson Canvas & Awning’s mission, she shared what’s behind the rave customer reviews and what sets their business apart from their counterparts.

Peterson Canvas & Awning’s team takes pride in their ability to improve their customer’s quality of life by helping them extend the comfortable and inviting details that they’ve nestled inside their homes to an enjoyable outdoor living space. Peterson’s owner, Natalia, references the teamwork and cooperative effort that everyone brings

to the table and their strong focus on individualized customer service.

“The company is dedicated to continuing this legacy of excellence through the collective efforts of its team,” she says. The number of stellar reviews that they’ve amassed online over the years speaks to their strong focus on customer satisfaction, and the 65 years they’ve been in business is a testament to their longevity and ability to grow with their customer.

Installing high-quality awnings and solar shades not only protects outdoor spaces from the elements but can also significantly reduce air-conditioning energy costs in the summer, which is better for both the homeowner and the environment. Interior upholstery and hardwood floors can also last longer and have less risk of fading or bleaching from UV rays when the outdoor exposure is protected by awnings or shades. You’re also able to provide your backyard space with some privacy and solitude with the addition of a patio awning and you can create your own mini paradise

with some finishing touches of décor, lighting and foliage. Building a pleasant outdoor living space to match the comfort of your home’s interior also allows you and your family to connect with the marvels of local wildlife and nature.

When installing an awning, you’ll want to consider different options for color and material to meet your specific needs. Peterson Awning & Canvas has a wide range of quality selections from trusted and vetted brands they’ve been using for decades, like Sunair, Eclipse and Americana. Stationary vs. retractable is also something to consider if you want to have the option of sun or shade depending on the weather and your mood. Automatic sensors for wind and other elements are also a great option to automatically retract your awning and protect it from damage when you are away from home or just caught up in entertaining your friends and family in your new backyard oasis.

Peterson Awning & Canvas’s skilled team and their impressive history of impeccable service to their local community make them an outstanding choice for the homeowner who wants to increase their home’s value and improve their quality of life by enhancing their livable outdoor space.

ECLIPSE AWNINGS AND SOLAR SCREENS:

• Glare reduction up to 94%

• Sun UV protection up to 98%

• Reduce heat gain by more than 77%

• Lower indoor summer temperatures up to 15 degrees

• Reduce energy costs up to 25%

• 10 year warranty on fading

• Water resistant for light or steady rains during backyard gatherings

• Shelter from wind, rain and insects with patio solar shades for outdoor gatherings

A MODERN Town WITH Historic Roots

In 2019, the Town of Windsor took ownership of a two-acre lot on County Road 15, just north of the Greeley #2 Ditch. The lot was originally intended to become a neighborhood park, but at the very center of the property stood a small building with boarded-up windows. This rundown, nondescript structure is the Halfway House, and it is the oldest structure in Windsor.

The Halfway House gets its puzzling name from its very first use as a stagecoach stop along the Overland Trail Cutoff Route, a commonly used thoroughfare for people traveling west across America. The Halfway House marked the midpoint between Greeley and Laporte, where folks could stop for a warm meal, a night’s rest, or even a rowdy evening of entertainment on the sometimes multi-day journey.

How Historic Preservation Projects in Windsor Are Making Old Buildings New Again

The Dickey Farmhouse after restoration.
Laura Browarny, Culture Supervisor of the TOW Museums, helps tidy up the landscape of the Historic Halfway Homestead site.

The restoration of the Halfway House will be the final step in the transformation of the overgrown lot into the Historic Halfway Homestead, Windsor’s first designated historic site. Since 2020, Windsor community members have watched as dead trees and brush were cleared out and replaced with landscaped gardens and as old, dilapidated buildings received muchneeded facelifts. The Halfway Homestead now features a restored 1907 farmhouse, a grain bin that has been repurposed as the backdrop for a performance stage, an outdoor cooking area, community and demonstration gardens, and many other amenities. The project has been made possible through developer fees and generous grant support from History Colorado and the Poudre Heritage Alliance.

The grounds of the Halfway Homestead are now open and free to explore. The Town of Windsor Museums is also hosting children’s summer camps and other events for all ages at the site in 2025, with a grand opening scheduled for 2026. Visitors to the site can watch as progress is made on the Halfway House restoration, which is scheduled to be complete by the end of the year. The Halfway Homestead also features a nature-based playground, an interactive water feature, and the Stagecoach Time Machine sculpture that was inspired by the Halfway House and brought to the site by the Windsor Arts Commission.

In addition to the Historic Halfway Homestead, the Town of Windsor Museums has also completed rehabilitation of the Eaton House, located at the Windsor History Museum near Boardwalk Park. This 1904 brick house was built by Benjamin Eaton, former Governor of the Colorado Territory, as housing for irrigation ditch workers. The Eaton House is open to the public this summer.

The Town of Windsor Museums maintains other historic properties in the Town, including the Art & Heritage Center in Windsor’s original Town Hall and the Windsor History Museum, which comprises the Train Depot along with many other historic buildings. Historic Preservation serves many purposes in a community, from establishing a unique identity and connecting residents to their roots to driving the economy and contributing to more sustainable construction efforts. DEPTHS & DUTY

Below the Surface: Windsor Severance Fire Rescue’s Elite Rescue Divers

ARTICLE BY WSFR STAFF | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HAYLEY CARSON

The call comes in at 2:47 AM—a vehicle has plunged through thin ice into the frigid waters of a local reservoir. While most of the community sleeps, a specialized team of first responders is already suiting up in dry suits and checking oxygen levels.

For Windsor Severance Fire Rescue's dive team, this is exactly the moment they've trained for. As a member agency of the Northern Colorado Special Operations Team and the Northern Colorado Dive Team, WSFR provides crucial rescue capabilities above and below the surface of our community’s many water getaways.

The WSFR Dive Team was established in 2021 and quickly expanded with the addition of a specialized dive truck and Zodiac rescue boat. “The WSFR Dive Team is a vital asset to the communities we serve, providing specialized water rescue capabilities,” said Deputy Fire Chief Darren Jaques. “Our team’s dedication, training, and readiness ensure that we can respond swiftly and effectively when every second counts. Whether it's a submerged vehicle, a missing person, or evidence recovery, our Dive CONTINUED >

New emergency markers along Windsor’s Poudre River ensure help is just a call away.

Team exemplifies our commitment to protecting the community in every environment, above and below the surface."

The path to joining this elite squad isn't for the faint-hearted. Candidates must complete an intensive two-week diving academy that pushes physical and mental limits, followed by rigorous ongoing training sessions. Team members master complex rescue scenarios across diverse conditions—from summer's sun-warmed waters where families enjoy recreational floating to winter's treacherous ice formations that can trap the unsuspecting.

What sets WSFR apart is their collaborative approach to emergency response. As proud members of both the Northern Colorado Special Operations Team and the Northern Colorado Dive Team, they've created a seamless network of qualified rescue technicians spanning multiple fire agencies. When a crisis strikes, this brotherhood of first responders mobilizes with military precision.

Innovation extends beyond training. WSFR has partnered with Windsor's Open Space and Trails Division to implement emergency marking systems throughout the community's recreational areas. New signage along the Poudre River at Eastman Park River Experience ensures that when summer adventurers need help, rescue teams can locate them with GPS accuracy.

Through changing seasons and varying conditions, these dedicated first responders continually train to master specialized skills needed when someone's life hangs in the balance. Their commitment to exploring the depths, whether in warm summer waters or winter ice, represents WSFR's mission of “providing professional service and compassionate care from our family to yours.”

In a world where emergencies don't wait for convenient timing, Windsor Severance Fire Rescue's dive team stands as silent guardians—ready to answer the call when someone's life hangs in the balance beneath the surface.

Highland Meadows Grill Pairs National Talent with Local Charm for a Concert Series Unlike Anything Else in
Mike Ault, talented musician and owner of Highland Meadows Grill.

Highland Meadows Grill in Windsor will be playing host to an impressive summer music nights lineup for the second year in a row. The 80-seat venue, with its aesthetically pleasing outdoor appeal and sweeping views of the surrounding natural beauty, prides itself on providing a listening-room experience that attracts appreciative listeners and high-quality artists alike.

Steering away from the typical cover band genre so prevalent here in Colorado, Mike Ault, owner of Highland Meadows Grill and a talented musician himself, welcomes original national touring artists, thus changing the dynamic of how Colorado appreciates live music.

The intimate atmosphere allows folks to truly listen and absorb the unique repertoire of the artists and actually get to know them as the performers often stay to enjoy conversations with members of the audience after the show. It’s this sense of connection and authenticity that keeps music lovers coming back.

With the beautiful surrounding golf course, and adjacent pond and fountain catching the golden light of dusk, experiencing a summer night concert on the patio of Highland Meadows Grill tops the list of can’t-miss summer activities in Windsor.

Known as much for the live summer music as for the delicious food, people began inquiring about this summer’s music nights way back in February - proof of the growing buzz and anticipation. Word is spreading about the unparalleled music style being represented at the Grill, establishing it as a destination spot for locals and out-of-towners alike to enjoy an innovative experience of dining and entertainment under the stars.

Artists know what a privilege it is to play at Highland Meadows Grill. Mike set a strict standard from the beginning, emphasizing originality and musical excellence. Because of that, audiences have come to expect nothing but the best of the best. With more than 60 requests

Some standout moments for Mike include when Tom McElvain, who has written songs for the likes of Cody Jinks, performed at Highland Meadows Grill. Another would be when top Tropical Rock artist, Mike Nash, played an unforgettable evening at the Grill, bringing island vibes to Colorado.

Most of the events are free, but when notable artists like McElvain and Nash, and even Erica Sunshine Lee, perform, the shows are ticketed at a very reasonable price of about $10. Mike shares, “You want to meet an artist and understand why he wrote a song and the story behind it? Come here to see us.”

The Historic Halfway Homestead will host a nostalgic screening of The Parent Trap (1961), paired with a dash of local history. Register at https://tinyurl.com/Hollywood-at-the-Homestead
