Home Is Where the Heart Is

The word "Home" to me means cozy, inviting, and warm. It is where I feel safe, relaxed and where I rest my head. It is a space that my husband and I have created together that we love to share with friends and family.
What story does your home tell others?
This month's publication marks one year since we have been bringing stories, events, and community to your door. We hope these pages bring you inspiration and highlight the wonderful local businesses that help make Windsor so special. In this 'Home' issue you'll find inspiration from Keri Andre's designs, The Pineapple Market's Vintage looks, and some good ole home-cooked meals for seniors by Evey. As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you will feel encouraged and connected to the people around you in your town, neighborhood, and most of all in your home. Thank you for letting us be just a small part of it!

Vintage pieces are beloved for their craftsmanship and attention to detail, giving you a look into the designs of the past. Owner, Shana Stolz of The Pineapple Market loves finding old and new pieces and pairing them together. She loves combining a colorful, bright new item with an aged, and lovingly worn-out old piece. When it comes to vintage furniture, Shana loves keeping natural wood original, and the more dings the better! One of her favorite pieces is an old postal cabinet that has open slots where the mailman would set everyone's mail, just simply there, out in the open, perhaps providing a glimpse into the behavior of people almost a century ago. The fossilized smudges and nicks of residents fetching their mail day

in and day out. Pairing new decor with old designs brings those vintage pieces back to life and keeps their story going. When customers walk in her store door, Shana loves to observe them smile, and release a calm exhale as they quietly walk around and admire all of the intricacies. All humans need a dose of nostalgia now and then. To feel that warm spark of a memory that whisks you away for a few moments! New pieces seem to enhance old ones and while one item was made over 100 years earlier the two items almost seem made for each other. Shana likes to remind her customers who are looking to explore and decorate, that when you find a piece that moves you, go for it! Don't worry if it matches the display you saw online or in a store, have the confidence to be creative on your own! To help guide her customers in creating their personal space, Shana likes to remind people to keep the following three design tips in mind: First, have a theme and don't let it get lost, sometimes less is more. Second, decorate in sets of three by combining three different sizes, colors, or textures. And third, always have a "wow" piece that is bright and attractive, and also neutral and classic. But most of all, give yourself some credit and have fun rejuvenating your soul while rejuvenating some decor!
CHEFS
As we approach our golden years, many of us develop a vision of what we would like our lives to look like after retirement, where we will live, and how we will spend our time. That vision often includes a desire to stay in our homes, filling our free time with hobbies and social lives. It
seldom includes spending time on chores like cooking. Which is why Chefs For Seniors was conceived. Father and son team Barrett and Nathan Allman started Chefs For Seniors in 2013 in Madison, Wisconsin. The Allmans were inspired by the needs of an older family member who

Since that time the company has expanded into a nationwide network of local chefs and small business owners working to meet the needs of seniors who wish to age at home. Here on the Northern Front Range, Chef Evey Post owns and operates the Chefs For Seniors franchise, which serves Windsor, Fort Collins, Loveland, Greeley, and Timnath. Ms. Post has worked in many area restaurants, including Windsor’s own
Chimney Park, and Door 222 in Loveland. “Chefs For Seniors differs from other meal prep services because we work with our clients on an individual basis. We don’t mass produce meals in a commissary kitchen. We come to our clients and cook in their homes. That lets us really customize what we do. We can work with special dietary needs, which is often a factor as people age and deal with health issues.” says Ms. Post. “One of the things we like to say is “we don’t deliver meals; we deliver a chef!” The service starts with the chef doing a grocery shop for fresh items, then coming to the home and spending about three hours there.
Clients typically use the service anywhere from once a week, to once a month. Most of the meals prepared can be frozen until ready to be enjoyed. Prices start at $165 plus the cost of groceries for a standard service, which provides 12 to 14 chef-made, wholesome, prepared-from-scratch meals.
When asked her favorite part of the job, Chef Evey responded, “I absolutely love what I do! For myself and my chefs,
spending time getting to know our clients, building relationships, and caring for them by providing a needed service is incredibly gratifying.”

Keri Andre loves designing spaces and emphasizes the importance of incorporating distinctive pieces that tell stories in order to create the unique and authentic sanctuary that is your home. “You can have an Ethan Allen showroom look, but design falls flat if you don’t interject yourself into the design.” Her experience staging homes while working in real estate, her own design studies, and gleanings from her builder brother have influenced Keri as a designer. She used her talents to create a safe haven for her husband and their three sons.

Adorned with pieces of her family’s heritage and reflections of her life, Keri’s home communicates all she holds dear while maintaining functionality and style. For instance, a glass case in her entryway highlights heirlooms from the Southern Ute Indian Reservation in Ignacio, Colorado on which her mother’s grandfather grew up. Forging a friendship with the tribe and Buckskin Charlie, the last Ute Chief, Keri’s great-grandfather shared horseback rides and Thanksgiving dinners with the chief. The friendship even gave rise to Keri’s great-grandfather receiving full Eagle headdresses from the tribe. Atop the glass
case is a map of her family’s 40-acre cattle ranch in Steamboat Springs where Keri grew up. Also featured in her home is a vintage upright piano that belonged to her great, great, great aunt. Keri’s mother played that piano, and Keri hopes one day to learn to play and share that with her grandchildren.
A pallet that once held the hay bales of the last horses Keri owned now serves as a coffee table. The master bedroom stands out as an important room for Keri and her husband. “It’s our private space where we start the day together and end the day together.” To add to its specialness, one wall is dressed with wood from the barn in

which Keri and her brother used to raise cattle. Also in the room is a chair from her grandfather’s law office that serves as a symbol of her admiration for her grandfather. Keri attaches particular importance to the dining room table. “One of the altars in your sanctuary is your dining room table because that’s where you learn about your family.
I have a great time dressing up the table and just making it feel special because those people sitting around the table are special to me.” Showcasing her values, Keri’s home tells her story beautifully, “It’s an outward expression of me caring for the people that I love.” For inquiries contact keri@sanctuaryrevealeddesign.com.
What’s the secret to a happy, healthy, and long life? Believe it or not, it’s actually quite simple: There are no secret ingredients, no sizable expenditures, and absolutely zero manufactured elements of any kind. Dive in with us as we share insights from our interview with the internationally renowned Blue Zones Founder, National Geographic Explorer, and award-winning journalist who is revolutionizing the way Americans make choices that can lead to living your best life.
For over twenty years, Dan Buettner has been fully committed to studying the health and longevity of Americans as well as influencing the proper and attainable health-centric environments our communities should embody. What started with identifying five “blue zones” around the world where people are both living longer as well as enjoying a higher quality of life in their elder years has now also evolved into proactively creating eco-systems where our communities engage in setting the standard for clean health.
Buettner’s first cookbook, The Blue Zones Kitchen, is a fantastic resource featuring ingredients and cooking methods that can increase longevity, wellness, and mental health. The recipes also include lifestyle tips such as proper portion sizes and the best times to eat dinner. Plus, check out his additional seven books that dig deep into the exact foods you should eat to how your circle of friends and family can influence your quality of life.
Every time you go out to eat, you will consume an extra 300 calories that are laden with more sodium, sugar, and oil than eating at home. “Get your hands on a plant-based cookbook, pick a dozen recipes, and cook those with your family on Sundays. If you make the effort to cook it with your family, you will gain the skills and learn to make some good and whole food plant-based recipes.”
