Where Style Meets Substance

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the style-centric issue of Westport Lifestyle Magazine. We are excited to feature Lauren Bush Lauren on our cover as she prepares for her big FEED Projects fundraiser at Artisan. Lauren’s blend of elegance and philanthropy sets the tone for a truly stylish and impactful month. Through her organization, FEED Projects, Lauren combats global hunger by providing meals through the sale of their products, as each purchase supports initiatives with partners like the United Nations World Food Programme and No Kid Hungry, delivering nutritious school meals to children worldwide and helping to break the cycle of generational poverty.

In celebration of our community’s rich traditions, we also honor the Westport Garden Club’s 100th anniversary. Just as fashion evolves, so too do our local customs. The Garden Club’s century-long journey of beautification and community spirit perfectly complements the vibrant style we explore this month.

Our fall fashion trends section, curated by Anna Barnes, showcases the latest must-haves from local favorites West and Savvy + Grace. These trends are more than just clothing; they embody the spirit of Westport itself, much like the unique CT street style we capture on our pages. From casual to bold, our local fashion scene reflects our community’s diverse character.

For a sweet ending to this edition, we’re happy to introduce Candy Connection, a candy truck that sweetens any event with its whimsical offerings. This company reminds us that style and fun go hand in hand, just like the playful yet practical finds at Around the Rosy, a children’s consignment boutique that makes fashion accessible for our youngest style enthusiasts.

As we weave through these stories, one thing remains clear: Westport is a community where style meets substance. Each feature in this issue highlights not just fashion, but the heart and soul of our town.

Happy reading!

Warm regards,

September 2024

DEAR

Jane Green

Shazi Visram and Jane Green at Kawa Ni in Westport.

Last month’s cover story, on HealthyBaby Founder Shazi Visram, included a letter penned by acclaimed author Jane Green about her friend Shazi. This month, Shazi wanted to return the favor: here is her piece about her friend, Jane.

Jane Green is a storyteller, a source of wisdom for so many, and an ever-flowing well where laughter originates behind twinkling eyes. Vulnerable and real. Hyper intelligent and prolific, her creative force is felt by all who know her. The beauty of her ability is the bravery to explore something new and different for each iteration of her work. There are artists who use their craft to approach variations of the same topic over and over again, but Jane is not one of them. Her books sell like wildfire. Each stands on its own. She’s not the kind of human one could call formulaic.

Jane moved from England–with her beloved accent in tow—to the States, and then everywhere. All around the world is typical, a Bohemian goddess is in the

making. Currently nesting in a breathtakingly beautiful rock-and-roll riad in Marrakech, she’s also exploring a cobblestone lane in London. She’s had many lives and cats, and will likely have many more. She’s an incredible culinary talent and names her soups after people. Her eye for design or the right word extends to every art form. A mother to six and a listener whose carefully considered response we all want to hear. Jane’s fault is that she is too fun and too hard to say goodbye to. It’s because ultimately all who know her, crave being around her light and want to be there to see where she shines it next.

Putting

Westport Garden Club celebrates 100 years of bringing beauty all over town.

Down Roots

By the time Nevada Davis married Ralph Hitchcock in 1896, the determined woman from Mineral City, Ohio had graduated from Oberlin College, taught school, and been a reporter for newspapers from Cleveland to New York City. Upon her nuptials, she retired as editor of the women’s Sunday page at The New York Press. W hen Ralph died, in 1913, she kept her family afloat by continuing her career, becoming the home economics editor of The Philadelphia Record and a lecturer at Temple University.

When it was time to retire again in 1920, she settled in Westport and turned her pioneering spirit to another passion: gardening.

Enlisting her friend, Amelia Cutler, a suffragist and wife of the noted architect Charles Cutler, the pair gathered together a group of like-minded folks – eight women and two men – and held the first meeting of what would become the Westport Garden Club.

Now celebrating its 100th birthday, the club has flourished and inspired in much the same way as the lovingly tended parks, plants, and inventive floral arrangements that bring beauty and distinction to all corners of town, says Louise Ward Demakis, a historian for the group and one of its former presidents.

“The early membership is like a who’s who of Westport,” she says. “You look at the names and there’s Bradley, Coley, Wakeman. Sara Crawford, Connecticut’s first female secretary of state was an early member.”

Known for its massive plant sale on Jesup Green on Mother’s Day weekend, the club will continue celebrating its centennial this month on September 28 with “Westport’s Town Treasures,” a much-anticipated flower show to be held at Saugatuck Congregational Church. The event, the first the club has mounted in a decade, will include exhibits on horticulture, design, photography, and more. There will also be a Flower Show competition, open to members of any National Garden Club-affiliated club, and held to their exacting specifications.

“THE EAR LY MEMBERSHIP[OF THE WESTP GARDEN C LUB] IS LIKE A WHO’S WHO OF W

And that is no small feat. Kara McKenna-Wong and past president and publicity chair Kelle Ruden, who are co-chairing the show, attended NGC Flower Show School to learn how to put on a regulation event and trained as judges for future events. School included many hours of instruction and study, says Kara.

“There are 29 individual tests,” she explains.

But both women are thrilled with their newfound knowledge and skills and the opportunity to celebrate the club and its membership’s dedication to Westport. Since its inception, the WGC has been placing its verdant stamp on everything from pine trees planted at the Southport Firehouse in 1929 to meticulously maintaining many town cemeteries to the creation of the Grace K. Salmon Park, a former dump on Imperial Avenue that now sports a pretty sundial to mark the club’s centennial. In addition to the many

ways the club continues to beautify Westport, it also was instrumental in banning billboards through the town’s stretch of I-95, the founding of the Connecticut State Federation of Garden Clubs, the development of tree and shrub planting on the historic Merritt Parkway in Westport, and the establishment of the Connecticut College Arboretum.

Along the way, the Club has joined efforts big and small to bring beauty and a sense of magic and wonder to the town, Louise said. In the 1940s, that took the form of Victory Gardens that sprang up all over Westport. And a few years ago, as the coronavirus pandemic raged, club members devised Friday Flowers, statement plantings and containers of blooms that popped up for the unexpected enjoyment of town residents. Promoted through social media, the effort added a spark of normalcy and magic, Kara says.

“It really kept us together,” she says.

Recent projects include an award-winning garden created with children and Pivot Industries outside Bridgeport’s Waltersville School and and efforts to promote sustainability through pollinator pathways, says Kelle, who is particularly passionate about helping birds and insects find a welcome bounty and respite in town.

The garden club is always considering new members. Kara, Kelle, and Louise agree it’s the hard-working, warm, and knowledgeable members who keep them involved.

“It’s a couple of generations of women working together,” says Louise.

Nevada and Amelia wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

FEED FOR GOOD

FEED PROJECTS CEO LAUREN BUSH LAUREN HOSTS A UNIQUE FUNDRAISING DINNER IN FAIRFIELD COUNTY.

On October 1, Artisan Southport, the beloved farm-to-table restaurant at the Delamar Hotel, led by Chef Frederic Kieffer, will host a unique dinner— one that helps children around the world get access to food.  Artisan is teaming up with the CEO and Founder of FEED, Lauren Bush Lauren, for a charity dinner to support FEED's nonprofit, The FEED Foundation. The foundation's mission is to support innovative solutions for tomorrow's more resilient and equitable global food system, including school meal programs, which the brand has supported for over 17 years. Every purchase from FEED, a certified B Corporation, supports the brand's on-theground partners: No Kid Hungry, the UN World Food Programme, and Akshaya Patra, and the dinner is another way to further FEED's mission of ending childhood hunger. Artisan is the perfect host. “We are a farm-to-table restaurant first, and we thought it would be a great partnership to work with someone that aligns with that

sustainability philosophy and gives back to the cause of children in need,” says Erin Kenning Spiegel, director of PR and communications for Delamar Hotels. And Lauren Bush Lauren tells  Westport Lifestyle she was “thrilled” when the opportunity to come to Southport arose. “We love activating locally with strong, engaged communities,” she says.  Westport Lifestyle sat down with Lauren to talk about her company and what she will bring when she comes to Fairfield County this fall.

WESTPORT LIFESTYLE:  HOW DID THE ORIGINAL IDEA FOR FEED COME ABOUT?

Lauren Bush Lauren: FEED was an idea I first had when I was a sophomore in college. I had the opportunity to travel with the UN World Food Programme, and through that on-the-ground experience,

seeing the realities of poverty and hunger, I wanted to do something to give back. Candidly, at the time, I didn’t know what that would be. Hunger is this massive and overwhelming global issue, and yet we know how to solve it. We know it takes meals.

Here in the U.S., our government can support school feeding programs, but so many countries don't have that safety net. I started FEED as a way to raise money and awareness to fund school feeding programs around the world, as well as here in the U.S.

I also really love design and I was involved in the fashion industry at the time. I was struggling: do I become a fashion designer, or do I become a humanitarian aid worker? And when I had the idea for FEED, I realized I could combine them. Creating products for a brand while getting to give back and be an entrepreneur was a win-win.

Lauren Bush in Honduras.

WL: YOU STARTED FEED IN 2007. HOW HAS IT EVOLVED SINCE THEN?

LBL: Retail in general has evolved so much since 2007! When we first started, we were a singular burlap bag, and for the first five years, we only had two or three similar looking bags. We had a realization: oh, we need to create newness— travel bags and pouches and work bags and more. Such an interesting and fun part of my job is trying to keep up with trends and stay ahead of the curve. We’ve also had a lot of amazing partnerships with companies like Target, Whole Foods, West Elm, Williams-Sonoma, Ralph Lauren, Clarins— the list goes on and on. It’s been so much fun to get to partner with these larger brands and retailers that want to do good and give back through partnering with FEED.

A FEED Supper held at Lauren's alma mater, Princeton University.
A FEED Supper held in collaboration with designer (and former Westport Lifestyle cover star!) Jenni Kayne.

WL : YOU MENTIONED CONSIDERING FASHION DESIGN AS A CAREER BEFORE LAUNCHING FEED. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?

LBL: I would say it’s classic—obviously I married into a very classic American fashion family! [Lauren’s husband is Ralph Lauren’s son, David Lauren, and she’s from a storied American family herself— her grandfather is George H.W. Bush and her uncle is George W. Bush.] That’s very aligned with my aesthetic, so it works nicely!

WL : TELL US MORE ABOUT THE DINNER AT ARTISAN. WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT?

LBL: This felt like a ready-made perfect FEED Supper, where we take what is generally a gala-style fundraiser and make it more intimate and conversational. It’s a way to meet neighbors and friends, and the Connecticut community has been really supportive of FEED. I think it will be a beautiful coming together of people learning about FEED and school meals and the importance of the program. I’m so excited.

WL: FEED HAS HELPED PROVIDE OVER 127 MILLION MEALS TO CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD. WHEN YOU THINK BACK ON ALL YOU'VE ACCOMPLISHED, WHAT BRINGS YOU THE MOST JOY?

LBL: Any time I see someone with a FEED bag walking down the street, it’s a high. But really, it’s the fact that this little idea has been able to have such an impact on the lives of children around the world.

For more information on the FEED dinner at Artisan Southport and to make a reservation, visit artisansouthport.com

WREN ALAIA, WHO RUNS @CONNECTICUTLUXURY, SHOWCASES LUX FASHION IN CT.
“I kept interviewing and posting, because I realized I loved interviewing people about fashion.”

4. Christian Siriano was at his Westport store for a holiday party, telling me what I should be wearing! 2

I started @ConnecticutLuxury one year ago—my first post was of a woman wearing a LoveShackFancy dress. I had no idea if this would grow, but I kept interviewing and posting because I realized I loved interviewing people about fashion. Over the past year, I've connected with hundreds of women and met so many people who share my love for fashion. I've also met talented designers and learned countless fashion and beauty tips. I get inspired by the stunning styles I see when I'm out interviewing, and this journey has deepened my love for fashion.

HERE ARE 10 OF WREN'S FAVORITE LOOKS FROM HER ACCOUNT.

1. This outfit is classic, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy-inspired minimalism. 2. Love this color combo and the surprise of the animal print on the hat’s ribbon.

3. This is a couple I ran toward to catch before they disappeared.  I loved her winter white outfit.

5. Spotted in Westport on Alexandra Rahmani (see page 52!) everything from the Gucci boots to the Saint Laurent bag is perfection.

6. This pretty floral Zimmerman dress with buttons looks spectacular offset by beige extras.

7. These beautiful sisters raided their mom’s closet for a Greenwich gala. I would love to see their mom’s closet!

8. This stylish mom-and-son duo stole the show with their impeccable outfits.

9. A glamorous couple shines at Greenwich Film Fest’s Changemaker Gala.

10. Loving the classic chic look of these two beauties wearing amazing pieces.

Sweet Dreams

CANDY CONNECTION OFFERS STATEMENT-MAKING PARTY FAVORS.

When Magaux Marena was planning her son's eighth-grade graduation party in the spring of 2022, she wanted a fun, unique dessert truck to offer guests treats at the end of the party. There was a problem, though: she couldn't find any in the area. She decided to start her own.

As soon as the idea popped into her head, she hit the ground running. "Shortly after, I purchased a pickup truck," the Stamford native says. She had it converted into a mobile candy superstore, called Candy Connection, and hit the road just a few months later. Her goal is to leave party guests stunned with the selection of treats. "I think it’s important to have a little of everything," says Margaux.  "I love picking out new and fun things that I know the little kids

will love, their reactions are always the best. I also make sure to pick some favorite old-school candy that blows people's minds. I love hearing 'OMG, a Whatchamacallit, I haven’t seen those in forever!'"

Candy Connection pops up at all kinds of parties– from weddings to backyard barbecues to birthdays to bar mitzvahs— and is always a huge hit. "Nothing is better than the smiles," says Margaux. "I mean, I’m in the candy business. What could be more joyful?

WHAT GOES AROUND...

Children's boutique Around the Rosy brings combines much-needed sustainability with the fun of shopping.

Taryn Bolotin's sister brought her to a children's consignment shop when she was pregnant. "I immediately fell in love with the idea of reusing these things we consume," she says. "I thought, Westport is pretty sustainable— we should have one, too." (She has been based in Westport since 1990, when her dad, singer Michael Bolton, moved the family here.) Taryn

Taryn Bolotin and Theresa Walsh, Around The Rosy's manager.
“Every time someone comes in looking for something specific –soccer cleats, size 11— and we have them, it's a great feeling.”

says she had "zero interest in fashion/retail" before that shopping trip, but she felt compelled to open her own boutique because of her passion for the environment. "The amount of waste we create with disposable diapers gave me tremendous guilt," she says. "I tried to be kinder to the planet with everything we did with my kids."

She's done that for  many kids in Fairfield County with her consignment shop Around the Rosy, which opened in 2013 and two years ago moved to their current location on Post Road East, twice the size of the former spot. Inside, you'll find everything from vintage girls' party dresses to kids' bikes to barely-used nursery decor.  "Every time someone

comes in looking for something specific –soccer cleats, size 11—and we have them, it's a great feeling," says Taryn.

Taryn also loves the community of shoppers— and sellers!— Around the Rosy brings together. "We love our customers and seeing their kids grow up and shop the racks on their own! It's nice becoming friends with our customers and seeing them make connections with each other," says Taryn. "Being a new parent can be isolating. We want parents to know they are safe here, and we guarantee their kids are going to find their new favorite store."

Life at full boost

While every Porsche is special, some tend to be a bit more so. For the 993, the Turbo/Turbo S were the ultimate expressions of the air-cooled, road-going 911, delivering blistering acceleration on a level that is impressive even by today’s standards. Our client’s pristine Turbo on the left is a stunner, finished in PTS Turquoise Metallic.

The folks at RUF took the 993 even further, first with their Turbo R then, nearly two decades later, the Turbo R Limited (the green example on the right is one of only seven produced). Boasting an eye-popping 620HP in a lightweight chassis, RUF again delivered a car that could exceed 200 mph.

The Speed Yellow car in the center of this trio is a completely different take on the 993: the TechArt CT3 featuring a supercharger delivering 462-HP to the rear wheels. While any CT3 is rare on these shores, this one is particularly so as it’s production number 000.

The one thing the owners of these three very special 993s have in common is their unwavering trust in us. The specialists in our air-cooled Porsche department are recognized by renowned collectors across the globe for their expertise, experience, and most importantly, integrity.

Over the past three decades, we’ve seen tremendous growth. With our newly expanded 36,000 square foot Danbury facility, we can expertly service every Porsche that rolls through our doors. From a priceless four-cam 550, to the electric Taycan, to the new benchmark in performance, the exhilarating GT3 RS.

Our competition clients are benefiting from our new southern location in Sebring, Florida, near the legendary racing circuit.

No matter which Porsche you drive, or how you drive it, we’ll give you the boost you need.

MARILYN HEFFERS

After 4 years of searching and numerous disappointments in this highly competitive housing market, I am so thrilled that my clients found their home. 352 Newtown Tpke had everything that was on their “wish list” and we were able to make their dreams become a reality There is nothing better than hearing your clients say “it was worth the wait!”
