It’s Not the Strongest of the Species That Survives.

Charles Darwin said it best: ‘It’s not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most adaptable to change.’ At Darwin Wealth Management, we embrace adaptability as the cornerstone of success, both for ourselves and for our clients.

As a boutique firm, we’re agile enough to respond quickly to market shifts and external influences, adjusting strategies to help keep you on track. ADAPTABILITY

Celebrating Seven Years of Community and Connection

This month marks a special milestone for Westport Lifestyle - our seven-year anniversary. We launched our very first issue in June 2018, and what an incredible journey it has been. We are deeply grateful to this community and to our loyal readers who have embraced us from the very beginning. To our dedicated advertising partners - it’s a privilege to share your message with this amazing town each month. To our exceptional editor, Sara Gaynes Levy, our talented contributing writers and photographers, and the entire team who bring this magazine to life month after month - thank you. And most of all, thank you to Westport for welcoming us into your homes and allowing us to tell your stories each month.

In our May issue, we celebrated the inspiring women of Westport. This month, we’re shifting gears with a fun, thoughtful issue made for the men of our community. Our June Gentleman’s Issue highlights the places, passions, and personalities that speak to the men who help make Westport the vibrant town it is today.

We kick things off with Westport Cut & Shave - a modern barbershop redefining the grooming experience. From there, we head to The Clubhouse, a new spot that’s quickly becoming a favorite for good food, great games, and easygoing connection.

Next, we spotlight multi-generational family businesses that have stood the test of time - a true testament to legacy, resilience, and local pride. We also sat down with Darwin Wealth Management for an insightful conversation about building financial security and long-term planning.

To celebrate Father’s Day, we’re serving up something special from Kristen and Marc Glosserman of Hill Country Barbecue - try one of their signature recipes for the dad in your life.

On the creative front, we’re thrilled to feature Sophie B. Hawkins, who brings her latest artistic endeavor to the Westport Library. And on this month’s cover is none other than Dave Briggs - one of Westport’s most devoted community champions and a familiar face at so many of our town’s events.

And finally, as we dive into summer, we’re sharing ways to enjoy Westport’s stunning waterfront - from sailing at Longshore to soaking up quiet moments on the Sound with family and friends.

Thank you for being part of our journey over the past seven years. Your support has meant everything. We’re honored to be a small part of your story - and can’t wait to see what comes next.

With gratitude,

June 2025

JOIN THE CLUB

Inside The Clubhouse, where fun reigns in Westport.

Tim and Emily Zobl, owners of The Clubhouse in Westport, say the number one thing they have heard since opening in February is “Westport needed something like this.” It’s easy to see why the sentiment is a common reaction: quite simply, it’s true. The Clubhouse is a first-of-its-kind for Westport, combining elements of a sports bar, a golf simulator, a karaoke spot, a darts hall, a gastropub, a rooftop beer garden, and a high-tech hangout all under one, peanut-free roof. “Westport has amazing restaurants. It has great shopping, it has great outdoor activities. But there was no indoor activity space,” says Tim. “We just kind of ran with the idea.”

Delicious eats and rounds of golf go hand-in-hand at The Clubhouse.

Crucially, Tim says, The Clubhouse is for everyone. “We had a goal to make this a place that wasn't, for lack of a better term, a guy’s hangout,” he says. “Yes, it's a sports bar. Yes, it's golf, but it's so much more than that.” The beverage program is full of “curated, thoughtful cocktails” and Chef Katie leads a team that makes everything from scratch, from sauces to fried pickles. Plus, the activities— from the aforementioned karaoke to trivia to rooftop cornhole— appeal to every kind of fun-seeker.

Walking through The Clubhouse you can’t help but be blown away by how high-tech everything is: the dart boards are connected to scoring screens that digitally record point values for laser-precise competition (and GIF-like reactions to particularly good or bad throws). The golf simulators also offer minigames in other sports like soccer. (Golf reservations are available in 90-minute chunks, and Tim says after the initial hour groups often start experimenting with the other sports offered on the simulators). The LED video wall in the main dining area can project up to four games at once. In other words: imagine an ultra-modern, adult-ified basement in the coolest house on the block.

Emily grew up in Westport, and connection to the town that raised her was something she wanted to harness in their project. The Clubhouse was built on local talent, and since opening, the husband-and-wife team have prioritized dynamically responding to feedback from customers (early examples included tweaking their beer sizes and increasing the golf blocks from 60 to 90 minutes based on what patrons wanted).

Ultimately, The Clubhouse is a family business. That peanut free kitchen? That’s because Tim and Emily’s older child has a peanut allergy, and they know the importance of offering peanut-free spaces. Hang out at The Clubhouse for a night and you’ll feel like part of the family, too.

Beyond the Haircut

WESTPORT CUT & SHAVE IS REDEFINING MEN'S GROOMING.

The grooming culture in Westport is unique, according to Westport Cut & Shave owner Cathy Castiblanco. “Our clients value both style and self-care,” she says. “Many of them lead busy professional lives but still make time for grooming and wellness. They’re not just looking for a quick haircut—they want an experience that helps them feel refreshed and confident.”  It’s why Westport Cut & Shave strives to offer it all, from sharp skin fades to timeless, classic cuts. Cathy ensures all clients receive a cut that’s tailored to their personal style—especially when they’re looking to try something new.  “Our clients have a real appreciation for quality, attention to detail, and classic grooming with a modern edge. It’s all about blending professionalism with personal style.”

When someone comes in to update or refresh their style,  Cathy first finds out about their career, daily routine, and how much time their schedule allows for morning styling and maintenance appointments. While face shape and hair type are important considerations too, Cathy believes understanding lifestyle and habits are key.

Ready to try something new? Westport Cut & Shave offers a range of popular services to explore for a style refresh.

Cathy Castiblanco with a client.

SHAVES

Cathy recommends easing into new facial hair styles by starting with subtle adjustments to the length or shape. “I’m always happy to guide clients toward styles that help them feel confident and comfortable,” she says.

The signature shave and beard trim are popular services. “Each of those services feature hot towels and a straight razor. It’s all about relaxation and precision,” says Cathy. For a truly special experience, try a shave with steam. The steam softens facial hair, allowing for a closer, smoother shave. Additionally, it opens pores and relaxes skin, reducing irritation and razor burn. "The warmth and moisture create a luxurious, spa-like experience," says Cathy. "It elevates a routine shave into an enjoyable self-care moment."

CUTS

Westport Cut & Shave's clientele enjoy a wide array of haircut styles, from classic to trendy. As Cathy explains, ”a fresh haircut can completely transform how someone looks and feels. It can highlight features, boost confidence, and reflect a new chapter in life. It can be a powerful form of self-expression." The barbers at Westport Cut & Shave tailor each cut to the client's personal lifestyle, whether they prefer a traditional or modern look.

Cathy says they also have lots of young adult customers, and with them, the team centers on patience, communication, and creating an enjoyable experience. The staff engages both parent and child in conversation to determine their desired style, ensuring the child feels included and enthusiastic. The ultimate aim is a haircut that reflects their personality and boosts their confidence, whether it's trendy or classic.

“Our clients have a real appreciation for quality, attention to detail, and classic grooming with a modern edge. It’s all about blending professionalism with personal style.”
“A fresh haircut can completely transform how someone looks and feels,” Cathy Castiblanco says. “It can highlight features, boost confidence, and reflect a new chapter in life. It can be a powerful form of self-expression.”

Some of the most popular haircut trends Cathy says they are currently seeing include:

• The Modern Mullet: Shorter sides with a longer, textured back for a trendy, edgy look.

• ’90s-Inspired Curtains: A center part with longer, face-framing layers for a relaxed vibe.

• Broccoli Cut: Tapered sides with a voluminous curly top, often achieved with perms.

• Edgar Cut: A bold style with a straight fringe and faded or tapered sides.

• Natural Waves and Curls: Mid-length cuts that highlight natural texture.

• Textured Crop: A short, low-maintenance style with a textured top.

OVERALL HAIR CARE

Cathy strongly advises men to establish a hair and scalp care routine using high-quality, professional products and getting regular haircuts to maintain healthy hair. She also suggests that clients develop a simple face and grooming routine, emphasizing the connection between healthy skin and a healthy scalp. Maintaining good daily habits, such as staying hydrated, eating a healthy diet, and minimizing stress, can improve both appearance and overall well-being.

“Grooming is self-care, and it starts with the basics,” says Cathy. “When a client leaves feeling like the best version of themselves, that’s when the magic happens!”

LIKE A ‘BIRD’

WESTPORT-BASED SINGER/SONGWRITER SOPHIE

B. HAWKINS BRINGS HER LATEST CREATIVE PROJECT TO THE WESTPORT LIBRARY.

Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter (and Westport resident) Sophie B. Hawkins first got the idea to pen a musical drama when she saw Fun Home on Broadway. That show, adapted from Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir of the same name, tells the story of a family dealing with and working through their trauma and dysfunction. “I thought: I have a story that is dynamic and moving, and I want to get it transcribed out of my heart and my brain and into a musical,” Sophie tells Westport Lifestyle. Though Sophie has written countless songs, including hits like “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover” and “As I Lay Me Down,” putting songs together in a narrative structure was a new creative endeavor for her, so she took a workshop from Wicked’s music scribe Stephen Schwartz. “I learned a lot from him,” she says. “I learned I needed to write this musical.” And the musical she wrote? Entitled Birds of New York, it’s story about a woman and her 7 year-old-son, estranged from the rest of their family, who travel back to New York City to see her dying father. The show will be performed at the Westport Library on June 9 at 6:30 p.m. as a script in hand, directed by JoAnn M. Hunter and facilitated and promoted by Suzanne Krauss and Sue Westphal.

While initially writing Birds of New York , Sophie immediately embraced how the songwriting process for a show— with a cast full of varied, dynamic characters— differed from the intensely personal process of penning an album. “When I work on an album, I'm sitting down and saying, I want to write about my son , or a feeling about my son. I have a sense that the song is gonna end up on an album, and then I'll be playing it in front of my fans,” she says. “With this musical, it was completely different. It was more: how do I serve the bigger story? How do I be true to these characters who I love so much, but have so many aspects that are hard to justify? ” The creativity exercised in inhabiting her characters’ motivations was invigorating, even when the characters themselves were making unsympathetic choices. “The mother— that character does so many unconscionable things, but she has reasons for all of it,” says Sophie. “I loved exploring her heart and soul and seeing things from her point of view in song—you're able to say things from this person that they could never say in spoken word. It made me fall in love with even the most difficult characters.” But despite the different writing style, fans of Sophie’s music will find much to love in the show. “My whole career has been based on the songwriting—that's why I still have the fans that I have,” she says. “That's what it's all about.”

This isn’t the first time Birds of New York has hit a Westport stage— it was originally performed in the Lucille Lortel White Barn at the Westport Country Playhouse last June, which is where Suzanne Krauss and Sue Westphal saw it. “When we walked out, we were like: I don't know why this isn't on Broadway tomorrow,” says Suzanne. “It was the most incredible, poetic, beautiful journey of a story we’d ever seen.” And since then, Sophie has refined the characters and added new songs (in no small part thanks to input from fellow Westporters). “Every time you pick up a script to start rewriting it, something profound will happen, because you're opening yourself up to everything you've learned since the last time,” Sophie says. Performing it again, at the Library, is “the greatest chance in the world, because this town is just bubbling with creativity,” Sophie says. She made it her goal to work with “as many local people as possible” to continue to develop and enrich the work, and she can’t wait to share the newest version of Birds of New York with another Westport crowd. “The audience is going to see a musical in its developmental stages, and it's going to be so real,” Sophie says. “People are going to see something very raw: there’s no scenery, there’s no lighting, it’s just going to be the book and the songs and the great acting. And honestly? I like that part the best.”

Birds of New York will be performed on Monday, June 9 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Trefz Forum at the Westport Library, 20 Jesup Road. Tickets are $40. To purchase tickets or for more information, visit westportlibrary.org

DAV E BRIGGS IS ONE OF WESTPORT’S BIGGEST CHEERLEADERS.

BUILDING BRIGGS

IIf Westport has an unofficial spokesperson, it might just be Dave Briggs. He’s everywhere: from co-emceeing Fashionably Westport to emceeing Pink Aid to participating in and moderating conversations at the library on everything from journalism to basketball to supporting local restaurants and businesses— There’s a reason he’s earned the title of “Westport Advocate.” But Dave says he wasn’t always as plugged into Westport happenings as he is now. “Early in the pandemic, [when I suddenly was home all the time] I realized: oh my gosh, I am not connected at all with my community, and it kind of broke my heart,” he says. So he made a concerted effort to change that. “I made it a priority to really connect with this town that I love, whether it’s helping out with restaurants or businesses on Instagram or hosting Fashionably Westport or PinkAid or supporting the gem that is Dan Woog. I am a bit of a cheerleader for this town, because it was missing from my life for 10 years.” He’s become a community fixture, yes, but through deliberate work— something he’s no stranger to.

Dave began his career as a sportscaster, though he originally aspired to play basketball. At 15, he broke his back, and was told he might not play again. “It forced me much sooner than many other kids to think about: what else could I do with my life? What do I enjoy? What could I be successful at?” he says. “Quickly, I thought: sportscaster. That seems like a dream.”

He majored in broadcast journalism at the University of Colorado-Boulder (he’s originally from Colorado) and started working up the ranks in local media, going from stations in Tulsa, Okla., to a big break in Boston where he covered championship-winning Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics teams. While covering sports for a string of elite-level Boston teams might have been the pinnacle of the profession to some, Dave had loftier-still ambitions. “I am intellectually curious,” he says. “That’s what allowed me to go from sports to news.” And he did, leaving behind Boston for a gig hosting Fox & Friends Weekend It was there he met Alisyn Camerota, another host on the show, who would go on to become a constant friend and colleague in his life (more on her in a bit). From  Fox & Friends Dave went back to sports, then eventually joined CNN, where he anchored Early Start

Throughout this time, he and his wife Brandi started looking for somewhere to live that would allow Dave easy access to both Boston and N.Y.C. “Brandi had a good friend who was raised in Westport, and the second we saw Compo Beach and our kids ran into the ocean in all their clothes… it was a quick sell,” he recalls. “We fell in love with it. We’ve met some of the best friends we’ve ever had here. We’ve had opportunities to leave— including to go back to Colorado, where we are both from—  but we’ve turned them all down, because this is home.”

It’s why he’s spent the last five years going all in on Westport— including his latest project, a video podcast from Mediaite with the

aforementioned Alisyn Camerota called Sanity “What brought us to this podcast is the fact that we were at a similar time in our lives and careers,” says Dave. Both journalists call Westport home, both recently stepped away from roles at national news outlets, both were hungry for an independent source of news and politics, and they’ve worked well together for years. (Dave’s CNN show, Early Start, led into Alisyn’s New Day.) “To have that kind of chemistry is such a gift,” he says. The podcast can be streamed wherever you get your podcasts, and is also available on their YouTube channel, @SanityShow, which has already amassed more than 11,000 subscribers. The response has shown that audiences craved the non-biased, information-forward programming that the longtime friends and collaborators were looking for themselves, and Dave says it’s been freeing to cover stories that really matter to their audience.

Through all the changes in his life, Dave is still reminded of what drew him here 17 years ago when he visits Compo Beach. “Taking a walk and talking with a friend along that beach reminds me how good we have it,” he says. “I’m not always great at being grateful, but that walk helps.” It proves that focusing on his connections here in town has paid off, and that even with all he’s accomplished, there are still so many exciting things he wants to do. “This is going to sound cheesy,” he says, “but I think the greatest moment in my career is still to come.”

All in the Family

Westport is home to so many multi-generational businesses that celebrate the power of a family legacy. In honor of Father's Day this month, Westport Lifestyle spotlights four family-based businesses that celebrate the connection between fathers and sons and have been positive influences on our community.

AMERICAN COLORS BY HENRY LEHR

66 Post Road E, acbyhenrylehr.com

Henry Lehr’s legendary clothing shop on Main Street outfitted countless

Westporters in his Americana-influenced surplus style during the 37 years it was open, from 1977 until 2014. Henry and his wife, Toni, raised their family here in Westport. Eventually, the shop in Westport closed and the the Henry Lehr stores moved out to the Hamptons exclusively.  Henry and Alex turned their full attention to design and manufacturing until last year, when Alex and his wife Shannon Lehr family made a triumphant return to downtown Westport and opened American Colors by Henry Lehr at 66 Post Road E.

Alex Lehr and Henry Lehr in 2004.

Returning to retail has been on Alex’s mind for years, but he needed the right location. “For the past seven years we would do pop-ups, but we were still primarily just wholesaling the brands and doing trade shows. But I always thought it would be great to have a flagship store, to get feedback and talk to customers,” he says. He says a few summers ago, while doing a pop-up in the Hamptons, he started hearing from Westporters that downtown would be the perfect place to open a more permanent outpost. When he found the spot they’re in now, it just felt right.

Opening American Colors has been more than a homecoming for Alex. “I’ve reconnected with old faces and friends, it’s kind of surreal,” he says. “I'm amazed by how many people speak so well of my dad— whether it was a small moment they had with him 30 years ago that they still remember or whether it was something they bought that he made, I’ve had so many wonderful interactions since coming back.” Henry passed away in 2021, and the store has given Alex a treasured connection to him. “I was always around [the business], and as a kid, it’s just part of your life. For me, he was my dad. As I’ve gotten a better understanding of how innovative he was—and now that I'm a dad too— it gives me a lot of peace that I had all that time with him.”

Alex’s take on the Henry Lehr brand bridges the generations between fans of the classic Henry Lehr style and newer shoppers who may not even know the storied history, because above all, the brand prioritizes craftsmanship. “Customers are constantly coming in saying ‘I still have a jacket that I bought in 1982, and I still wear it.’ Or even if they don’t wear it, ‘it means so much to me that I still have it,’” Alex says. “It really reinforces the importance of making quality things that last.” Like, for example, the Henry Lehr legacy.

Alex Lehr.

LUX BOND AND GREEN

136 Main Street, lbgreen.com

Lux Bond and Green’s history goes back more than 125 years. In the 1870s, Morris A. Green immigrated from Lithuania and soon began repairing jewelry from a horse cart on the streets of Waterbury, Conn. “We believe he was doing that for about 10 years, until, In 1898, he was successful enough to open a storefront,” says John Green, president & CEO of Lux Bond and Green. In 1932, Morris’s sons— John’s great-uncles—pivoted expanded that business into buying Lux Bond & Lux Jewelers in Hartford, and the rest is history. Today, John and Norma as well as their sons, Charlie, his wife Nikita, and brother Dan are the fourth and fifth generation Greens at Lux Bond and Green, which has locations in Glastonbury, Mohegan Sun, West Hartford, Wellesley, Mass., and of course Westport, with a future storefront in Mystic on the way.

It’s rare that a family business makes it to the fifth generation, but if you’ve ever shopped at a Lux Bond and Green store, you know exactly why the brand has survived for so many years. “Knowing our customers and being ingrained in the community isn’t just important for us to continue to grow and thrive, but also because we want to have more than a salesperson-customer relationship with our customers: this is where our friends are created,” says John. It’s why,

when celebrating their 125th anniversary two years ago, they launched a 125 Acts of Kindness campaign to donate to 125 worthy organizations. “It’s not just about the money,” says John. “We think of our company as a community resource.”

It makes sense that a brand that is part of such big moments in people’s lives— weddings, anniversaries, engagements, birthdays— would take kindness so seriously. “I always say we sell things people don’t need,” says John. “But they really want them. Because it's gonna help them remember something that was really important. Every time they look down at that engagement ring, or at their father's watch that was passed down through the generations, they have a connection with their past, present, and future.”

It’s true for customers and it’s true for their staff. “Seeing what my father and my grandfather and everybody has built to create the legacy of Lux Bond and Green, and that we are able to have staff who are 20 or 30 years into working here who are not family members— it’s because of the environment we fostered here,” says Charlie. “Creating a place where people can come and work and enjoy and feel safe and want to spend 30 years? I want to be able to continue that for the future.”

HIGGINS GROUP

30 Elm Street, higginsgroup.com

Rick Higgins moved to Connecticut three decades ago— from Saddle River, New Jersey where he had been a real estate lawyer for 20 years and built 200 homes— to Fairfield, basically on a whim. His brother had recently settled in nearby New Canaan, and on a visit he “fell in love” and decided to move to the area. “In real estate, there’s two things you need,” he says. “To know people where you are, and to know where you are— to be able to get around.

The only person I knew was my brother, who had only been there a year. And I have no sense of direction,” he says with a laugh. Still, despite having neither contacts nor a map of his new town committed to memory, Rick founded the Higgins Group, a real estate brokerage that thrived. Twentyeight years later, they have grown from one agent (Rick) to more than 400 agents and ten offices, and they now represent Forbes in Connecticut. (To Rick’s credit, it’s not unusual for him to be proven right on an initial instinct— he bought the first land he

Richard, Rick, and Adele Higgins.

saw when he went looking in Fairfield, and proposed to his wife on their third date.)

As Rick built the company, he followed four guiding principles. The first and most important, he says, “is your family always comes first.”  Rick never wanted his agents to have to choose between work and, say, their children’s sporting events or school plays. It was also personal for him: Rick’s wife Adele serves as the Higgins Group’s vice chairman, and their son, Richard Higgins, is the chief operating officer. With his own family involved, and “family first” as an ethos, the staff became a family unto itself. "Outside of my family, I consider the agents at the Higgins Group as my best friends— and I try to respond to them in that manner," he says. His other principles: everyone is equal (you’ll never find a “top producer of the month” at the Higgins Group); treat others the way you’d like to be treated; and be kind. “This business is emotional,” he says. He never wants his team to forget that buying or selling a house can be an intense experience, and that a little empathy goes a long way.

With a foundation based on kindness, it’s not surprising that Rick has many employees who have been with the company nearly all of its 28-year history. When his son joined the business eight years ago, it became the cherry on top. “I really couldn’t do this without him,” Rick says. “I’ve been in this business for over 50 years, and I’ve made every mistake you can make, and I've learned from all of them. I really enjoy passing on my knowledge and teaching my son everything I can. Working with him, I’ve never been happier in my entire life.” It’s why Rick says he will “never retire”— the business, and most importantly the people in it, just mean too much to him. “Every day when I go to work, I feel good about it. I’m just really lucky.”

GAULT FAMILY COMPANIES

11 Ferry Lane West, gaultfamilyco.com

“My earliest memories of the family business were going with my father in the middle of the night to help dock the oil boat on the Saugatuck River,” says Sam Gault, the owner of Gault Family Companies. Gault Family Companies is the oldest business in Westport, and Sam is the fifth generation of his family to steward the business. “Every generation has put their own fingerprint on the business and it has grown in each generation, in one way or another; always with

an eye on evolving to meet the changing needs of the customers we serve,” says Sam. “My grandfather and father both launched into the service business to take care of the heating systems for the customers that we delivered oil to. In the fifth and sixth generations, we have [expanded to become a] home solutions company at the forefront that also delivers energy. We are the one stop shop for all your heating, cooling, electrical, and stand-by power needs,” he explains.

Gault Family Companies takes their dedication to Westport seriously— Gault Cares,

their program to support charitable organizations— is a notable sponsor of many iconic Westport institutions, including Pink Aid, Staples Wreckers, The Westport Woman’s Club, Homes With Hope, and many more. “Giving back to the communities that we serve is in our DNA, and has always been that way since my great-great grandfather, John Gault came to America from Ireland in 1860,” says Sam. “Nothing is more important to help support families, especially the children in our community to develop into productive young people.”

This legacy of service– along with his own family’s legacy— has been a source of joy for Sam as he guides the company five generations on. “One thing my grandfather always said that rings true today [is] ‘you are only as good as the people that you are working with,’” Sam explains. “That is a major reason we work as hard as we do to create a good culture at GFC, one where team members are well trained, challenged to do their best, and can enjoy themselves while they are doing worthwhile work.” It’s an inspiring mission. “ Four generations of reliability and commitment to the customer was already in place when I arrived on the scene,” he says. “I have really enjoyed working with the sixth generation as they have brought new ideas and strategies to utilize technology to the benefit of all our team members and customers.”

Stray From THE HERD

Remy Bartolotta, Spencer Avalos, and Michael “Tino” Sorrentino of Darwin Wealth Management.
Darwin Wealth Management's modern blueprint for investors.

At the crossroads of art and science, Darwin Wealth Management has engineered a distinctly untraditional approach to investing, one that rejects industry orthodoxy in favor of evolution, adaptation, and reinvention. Based in Tampa, Fla., and recently expanding to Westport, Darwin is led by three partners who built their careers by discarding the tired playbooks most firms cling to. Michael “Tino” Sorrentino, formerly a VP at Barclays Capital and Chief Investment Officer at a $7 billion advisory firm, joins forces with Remy and Michael Bartolotta, visionaries who transformed a small wholesale insurance startup into a top-tier national player. Together, they’ve created an investment platform grounded in first principles, agility, and client-centric customization.

“We’re not chasing trends,” says Tino. “We’re building frameworks that adapt as markets move. You need more than stocks and bonds to thrive in this economy. That’s not controversial. It’s reality.”

Darwin’s investment philosophy avoids the false comfort of rigid allocations or passive strategies that ignore modern risk factors. Instead, the firm offers a curated blend of traditional assets and alternative investments, giving qualified investors institutional-caliber access to private credit, equity, and hedged vehicles.

“We take good ideas and make them great,” says Remy. “That includes unlocking access to opportunities once reserved for those with institutional-level expertise, experience, and capital." Think: everything from emerging technologies, healthcare innovation, and energy infrastructure to sports franchises, music rights, and intellectual property. While such alternatives were once out of reach for most investors, Darwin now offers access at the retail level, creating entry points that have traditionally been inaccessible to individual investors.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN VIDELER

“It’s not about abandoning the public markets. It’s about not being limited by them,” says Tino. “Natural selection drives markets. Investors must continually adapt to survive.”

This strategic reinvention doesn’t just apply to portfolios. Darwin’s planning process is equally progressive, rooted in purpose and clarity, not projections that expire the moment markets shift.

Whether navigating transitions, reducing tax exposure, or building a meaningful legacy, Darwin remains focused on outcomes that go beyond performance. Their outcomes are measured in confidence, clarity, and the ability to sleep at night.

Because here, freedom means forgetting your finances, so you can focus on what truly matters.

Using the latest tools in fintech, Darwin crafts dynamic plans that flex with life, not against it. At its core, Darwin is about deep relationships. That’s especially evident in Westport, where sophisticated, finance-literate clients demand more than cookie-cutter solutions. “Our clients want to invest in where the world is going, not where it’s been,” says Remy. “They expect a platform that’s tailored, not templated. That’s exactly what we deliver.”

BARBECUE IS BACK

Celebrate summer and Father’s Day with Kristen and Marc Glosserman of Hill Country Barbecue Market.

Barbecue is a Father’s Day dinner classic— but it wasn’t always easy to find in the Northeast. All that changed in 2007, when husband-and-wife duo Marc and Kristen Glosserman (who are now Westporters) opened Hill Country Barbecue Market in N.Y.C. “My family on both my mom’s and my dad’s side are from Texas,” explains Marc. “I’ve always had a passion for barbecue, because I loved it growing up.” Kristen recalls Marc asking on one of their early dates where she liked to go for barbecue in the city, and when she responded that the cuisine wasn’t really a presence in New York, Marc’s gears started turning about opening a spot of his own. The idea went from percolation to reality as the couple also fell in love and got married, and on the night that Hill Country opened on 26th Street, Kristen went into labor with their oldest

child. “We named him Austin Sam, after my grandfather, Sam, from Lockhart, Texas” says Marc. Since that fateful night when two of their babies came into the world, the business and their family have both grown and expanded— they now have three daughters in addition to their son, and they’ve evolved their business. About three years ago, Austin expressed a desire to play high school football—something he couldn’t do at his school in N.Y.C.—so they toured schools in Fairfield County. They found one for him, one for their three girls, and a great house, and officially decided to leave Manhattan for Westport. “Westport is special,” says Kristen. “I think a lot of the reason Marc and I are here in Connecticut, is really because the restaurant was growing up and more independent and, for the

first time, we were able to take a bit of space to really focus on our family, and this last chapter with all of us under one roof.”

The importance of connection extends beyond their own nuclear family and into what they’ve created at Hill Country Hospitality, the group behind the restaurant. “The thing I’m most proud of is the

community that we’ve built,” Marc says. “From employees to guests from around the world— to be able to build something meaningful to the community is very rewarding.”

In honor of Father’s Day, Westport Lifestyle asked Marc and Kristen to share one of their favorite Hill Country recipes: for their signature ribs.

Hill County Signature Rub:

Directions:

1. Prep the Ribs: Remove silver skin from the back of the ribs. Evenly coat both sides of the ribs with rub. Wrap and refrigerate up to 24 hours in advance (optional).

2. Set Up the Grill: For Charcoal Grill: Arrange coals for indirect heat. Place a drip pan in the center. Add soaked wood chips to the coals. Preheat to low (215–225°F). For Gas Grill: Put soaked wood chips in a smoker box. Preheat grill on high until smoking, then reduce heat to low. Set up for indirect heat with a drip pan.

3. Cook the Ribs: Place ribs on the grill over the drip pan (not directly over heat). Close the lid and maintain a steady 215–225°F temperature. Cook for approximately 4 hours, checking temperature periodically.

4. Finish & Serve: Check for doneness: ribs should be tender with a slight tug. Let rest for 10–15 minutes before slicing. Serve as-is or with sauce on the side.

TIPS FOR ENJOYING WESTPORT’S BEAUTIFUL WATERWAYS THIS SUMMER WITH LONGSHORE SAILING SCHOOL.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF LONGSHORE SAILING SCHOOL

Summer in Westport is unbeatable, but if you’ve never been sailing here, you’re missing out: we have multiple waterways to traverse with the Longshore waterfront, the Saugatuck River, and the Long Island Sound. Westport Lifestyle spoke to Jane Pimental of Longshore Sailing School to get her tips on trying your hand at sailing this summer. What are you waiting for?

Westport Lifestyle: What is the first (or most important) thing newbies should know about sailing?

JP: Understanding wind direction is fundamental to sailing. It determines your course, sail trim, and how the boat handles in different conditions. A good sailor knows how to anticipate shifts, maintain balance, and execute maneuvers with precision—all by watching the wind.

WL: What gear/clothing/equipment do you recommend new sailors get before they hit the water?

JP: Sailing with Longshore Sailing School is all about showing up—no fancy gear required. We provide boats and life jackets (for adults), so there’s no need to invest in equipment. Just come dressed to move: wear closed-toe shoes that can get wet and bring layers to stay comfortable as the weather shifts. The conditions may change, but you’ll be ready.

WL: What surprises newcomers to sailing most?

JP: It’s easy to think sailing is just about getting out and back, but becoming a truly capable sailor takes observation, instinct, and practice.

Learning to read the water—and the subtle signs of changing wind—is one of those unexpected skills that separates beginners from sailors. And it’s often what surprises people the most.

WL: What are some reasons you think people should try sailing if they never have?

JP: Sailing offers something rare: the perfect balance of adventure, independence, and calm. It’s a chance to step away from screens and schedules, and into the rhythm of wind and water.

You’re not just a passenger—you’re in control of your own vessel, learning new skills that challenge your body and engage your mind. Along the way, you’ll meet others who share the same spirit of curiosity and discovery.

Whether you’re chasing the thrill of harnessing the wind or seeking the quiet, sailing opens up a world that’s both energizing and deeply peaceful.

WL: What do you love most about sailing in Westport?

JP: Sailing in Westport is a blend of ease, beauty, and choice. From the Longshore waterfront, it’s a quick glide to the Saugatuck River mouth, the scenic Norwalk Islands, or the wide expanse of Long Island Sound. Whether you prefer the calm of sheltered waters or the excitement of open wind and waves, there’s a course for every kind of sailor.

Though sailing is often seen as an exclusive sport, Westport tells a different story. With both public programs and membership-based clubs, access is broad and welcoming. Whether you’re just getting your sea legs or already charting your own course, there’s a place for you here.
