Investing In Community

Investing in What Matters Most

As we step into this new season, investment takes on many forms—beyond just numbers and portfolios. True wealth comes from the choices we make every day: investing in ourselves, our homes, and our futures.

Invest in Yourself. Whether it’s prioritizing your health, advancing your career, or carving out time for personal growth, investing in yourself is the foundation for everything else. This month, we highlight speech therapist Deirdre Flores, whose work is improving the communication— and lives—of Westport’s young adults. We also explore Westport’s startup culture, showcasing how entrepreneurs have become a growing presence in our community. And if self-care is your priority, we’ve rounded up ten top spots in town where you can pamper yourself.

Invest in Your Home. The spaces we create shape the way we live. Step inside a thoughtfully modernized historical home on Cross Highway, where past and present blend beautifully. And because protecting your biggest investment matters, Cross Private Client Insurance shares expert advice on maximizing your home insurance coverage.

Invest in Your Community. Giving back is one of the most fulfilling investments we can make, and this season, Newman’s Own, Inc. honors their founder—noted Westporter Paul Newman—with a holiday dedicated to generosity and impact. Meanwhile, local EV enthusiasts have found a place to connect in the EV Club of CT, a thriving community for electric vehicle owners to share knowledge and inspiration.

Invest in Experiences. Travel is one of the most rewarding investments, and local experts share their best tips for planning an unforgettable getaway. Closer to home, don’t miss the Westport Library’s annual celebration of music and culture, featuring a special appearance by Paul Shaffer. And if entertaining is your love language, Marcia Selden Catering brings Mediterranean inspiration to the table with fresh, vibrant tapas recipes perfect for any gathering.

This issue is all about making smart, meaningful investments that enrich our lives—whether in our homes, our community, or ourselves.

Here’s to investing wisely, in every way that counts.

HISTORY MEETS LUXURY

Inside a thoughtfully modernized historical home on Cross Highway.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF TURNKEY MEDIA

The house at 147 Cross Highway dates back to early Westport, circa the 1830s or 1840s. It was originally owned by the Meeker family, and in 1999, a builder named Tony Leggio modernized the home. "It combines the charm and character of a historic home with the comfort and convenience of modern living," explains Erica Acheychek, the realtor from Coldwell Banker's EA Homes who is listing the property. "The home features stunning original chestnut

floors and reclaimed wood beams, blending timeless craftsmanship with inviting warmth. It’s truly a special property that has been incredibly well received," she says. Other standout preserved features include a wood-burning pizza oven and bread warmer in the kitchen, and original floors in the second-floor guest suite.

The historic house sits on 1.01 acres, a hidden gem that hasn't been on the market in 25 years. "From the front, it appears unassuming, but it holds a wonderful spacious surprise inside," says Erica. Luckily, Erica and the team at Coldwell Banker gave  Westport Lifestyle a peek at this lovingly restored five bedroom, four full and two half-bathroom home. "People are amazed at how seamlessly the historic portion integrates with the new addition," says Erica. If seeing is believing, we've got the proof right here.

Speech therapist Deirdre Flores seeks to improve the communication—and lives— of Westport’s young adults.

ores, MS, CCC-SLP, founder ofThe

SPEAK BETTER, LIVE BETTER

Speech and communication skills don’t stop developing at the end of childhood. For teens and young adults, continuing to invest in their ability to convey their thoughts effectively and carry on a conversation with a potential boss—or perhaps a date—can be the difference between a meaningful life or staying home on the couch.

This is the message that Westport-based speech-language pathologist Deirdre Flores, MS, CCC-SLP preaches with her private practice The Teen SLP. Inspired to pursue a career in speech from

her childhood experience working with therapists learning to say her Rs, she has worked with Westport Public Schools for years. While seeing clients there, she began to notice that adolescents who had aged out of publicly-sponsored speech programs needed support in the communication skills needed to transition to adulthood. In 2021, she started offering communication, social, and life skills groups—yes, even one dedicated to dating!—in addition to individual clients through her private practice in town.

While many of the clients Deirdre sees are neurodiverse, and most do have some experience with speech therapy in the past, “not one person is the same,” she says. Parents or other providers usually do the referring, but given the age of her clients, she likes to make sure they are personally ready and motivated to invest in

themselves. “In my intake session, I make sure to ask: ‘Is this what you want to work on?’”

Some of the biggest challenges she sees her clients face have to do with self-advocacy and making and keeping friendships. “When teens become young adults and they're no longer in high school or college, making relationships and finding friends is really hard,” Deirdre says. “The ability to have small talk or to ask somebody for their phone number or to engage at a community event are the skills that we work on all the time.”

These soft skills are not only imperative for us all to have in finding friends and maintaining relationships, but they can also lead to being successful at work. For example, Deirdre has helped clients learn how to use the phone at their jobs, including timely and appropriate texting.

Learning to communicate is an invaluable skill, says Deirdre.

Today’s young adults are already working at a disadvantage with the interruption in their development that COVID-19 lockdowns brought, not to mention the detrimental social impact that smartphones have had, she acknowledges. “They weren't able to practice these skills naturally,” she says. “I also think that they can hide from social situations a lot

“WHEN TEENS BECOME YOUNG ADULTS AND THEY'RE NO LONGER IN HIGH SCHOOL OR COLLEGE, MAKING RELATIONSHIPS AND FINDING FRIENDS IS REALLY HARD," DEIRDRE SAYS. "[THESE ARE] SKILLS THAT WE WORK ON ALL THE TIME."

easier, because it's so much easier to be on your phone than to go out. And so that's what I work a lot with them on.”

School-taught abilities like reading comprehension and essay writing are important, but “learning to communicate is an invaluable skill,” she says. “If you are able to communicate your wants and needs, form relationships, self-advocate, and problem solve, you'll be so much more successful.”

Even for those who may not need her services, she recommends engaging with community to everyone to help improve communication skills. “If you are interested in running or board games, join a group,” she says. “Meet people that share a common interest with you. Go multiple times because the first time is going to be awkward. Engage in small talk, have the conversations–put yourself out there.”

For more information about Deirdre and her practice, visit theteenslp.com

Joining a group for an activity you enjoy— like board games— is a great way to practice communication skills as a young adult, says Deirdre.

HOW WESTPORT HAS BECOME A TECH AND INNOVATION HUB.

SHIFTING TO STARTUPS

We all know that during the pandemic, Westport’s population expanded as an influx of folks relocated to our area. One of the most interesting outcomes of that demographic shift is that we became a hub for tech professionals, with many relocating to the area in search of a vibrant community, access to talent, and a strategic base for remote work, further fueling

Ted Schachter's Mentorship Circle.

the region's growth as a key player in the innovation and startup sectors. In response, StartUp Westport was founded by Cliff Sirlin, Peter Propp, Dan Bikel, Jay Norris, Sam Hendel, First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker, Chief Foti Koskinas, Matt Gorin and Stefano Pacifico with the mission to foster a dynamic, innovative ecosystem where entrepreneurs, investors, and professionals can collaborate, network, and grow. It aimed to leverage Westport's unique blend of affluent professionals and proximity to major tech and finance hubs to create a space where the startup community could thrive and, as a result, is increasingly being referred to a “Silicon Sound.”

In just the last year, the number of startups in the area has increased by 40 percent, and there are now more than 1,800 members of StartUp Westport, which include not only tech startups but investors, service providers, and corporate partners who see the potential for innovation in the region. Kara Curtis recently joined as the Head of Marketing and Communications at StartUp Westport. Her strategic leadership has played a key role in raising the organization’s visibility, driven targeted marketing campaigns that have enhanced brand awareness, engaged the community, and attracted high-quality members, partners, and investors to support the region's growing innovation ecosystem. With this huge membership base and a strong leadership team in place, StartUp Westport has targeted three key areas of focus as the culture in town continues to embrace tech entrepreneurs and venture capital:

TENTPOLE EVENTS

StartUp Westport has hosted major events, including the Innovator of the Year award featuring Jimmy Pitaro, which attracted over 400 attendees, and the Young Innovators Spotlight, which brought together Staples alumni to discuss how this community created a foundation for them to develop

"The power of collaboration makes our mentorship ecosystem truly special.”

groundbreaking innovations. The events have also served as key networking platforms, where entrepreneurs meet investors, mentors, and potential collaborators. They also highlight the growing influence of Westport as a tech and startup destination, with more companies choosing to relocate to the area because of the vibrant ecosystem.

"I spent twenty years as an operator, and wanted to provide guidance to others that may face similar obstacles,"

“[StartUp Westport] also highlights the growing influence of Westport as a tech and startup destination, with more companies choosing to relocate to the area because of the vibrant ecosystem.”
"This mentorship program is a testament to the generosity and talent in Westport," says mentee Melody Jones, with her mentor Vin Turk.
says mentor Vin Turk.

THE MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Recognizing the value of experience and guidance, StartUp Westport launched its Mentorship Program to connect budding entrepreneurs with established industry experts.  Led by Noah and Susan Fenn, the program has quickly grown to one of the largest mentorship programs in the state with over 260 participants. This initiative provides one-on-one mentorship, and small group mentorship circles, offering advice on topics such as building a business plan, fundraising, marketing, and legal considerations. Mentees consistently report that the program accelerates their growth by providing them with targeted advice, invaluable connections, and confidence to navigate the complex startup world. One example is Bari Schrager, (see page 39) who left a successful media career at Condé Nast to launch GOMME, an AI-powered retail media network transforming in-store marketing for the liquor industry. StartUp Westport paired her with Kal Amin, who joined 1848 Ventures as Managing Partner, eager to build AI-driven ventures focused on the SMB market—while continuing his commitment to mentoring the next generation of entrepreneurs. Their shared background in media made for an ideal match. With Kal’s guidance, Bari refined her strategy and secured Kindred Spirits & Wine—a local Westport business—as a real-world testing ground for GOMME’s beta launch. The impact was immediate: sales lifted for all beta advertisers, customer engagement increased by 34 percent, and major liquor brands took notice—leading to $1.5M in proposal requests. “Kal’s mentorship, along with the support from local partners like Kindred Spirits & Wine, has been crucial in our journey from concept to beta, and now to real-world demand,” says Bari. "As we move into the next stage of growth, I’m incredibly grateful for this community—it’s been a great resource and a wonderful way to connect with fellow entrepreneurs." Now, as Bari prepares for

the next stage of growth, Kal continues to advise her. “Working with Bari has been incredibly rewarding. The power of collaboration makes our mentorship ecosystem truly special,” agrees Kal.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS

StartUp Westport recently introduced Special Interest Groups (SIGs) led by Kal Amin to address the growing demand for sector-specific focus. These groups include topics like cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, fundraising and investment, and women in technology and innovation, offering a space for entrepreneurs to discuss challenges, share resources, and collaborate on sector-specific opportunities. The SIGs have become an essential part of StartUp Westport's programming, providing specialized support for members who want to dive deeper into their fields.

And even with all this, StartUp Westport is still innovating. In the coming months, they will launch the "Founder Stories" series, where members will share the unique journeys that led them to start their businesses. These stories will be featured in newsletters and on the StartUp Westport website, giving exposure to local founders and providing inspiration for others in the community. In addition, the "Visionary’s Podcast," hosted by Jay Norris, will showcase interviews with influential thought leaders, local innovators, and successful entrepreneurs. The podcast will cover a wide range of topics, from emerging trends in technology to personal stories of overcoming challenges in business, providing valuable insights to the entire community. Plus, an updated membership directory is on the way to improve networking opportunities. There’s never been a better time to be part of a startup in Westport. The Best Trip of Your Life

TOP LOCAL TRAVEL AGENTS SHARE THEIR TIPS FOR PLANNING AN UNFORGETTABLE VACATION.

Do research!

"Food is such an important part of travel for me, so I think it’s important to learn about the local specialties and where to try them.  It’s also important to know if you need to make dinner reservations. YouTube or TikTok have a lot of great videos, or Context Travel offers pre-trip talks given by experts." -Rene Prasad, founder of Grand Explorations Travel (grandexplorations.com)

[I love to go to] the less visited spots on each continent.  For example, I took my family to the Czech Republic last year and cannot tell you how amazing and authentic this country is. In Europe, countries like Slovenia and Montenegro as opposed to Croatia will give you more bang for your buck, but give you a very similar experience.  In Central America, try out Belize as opposed to Costa Rica, which has become quite overpriced. And for Italy, instead of going to the Amalfi Coast or Sicily, to get a coastal/beach experience, try out the lesser visited area of Puglia on the east coast." -Ashley Lancer, executive luxury travel designer at VWT by Chase Travel (virtuoso.com)

Leave room for spontaneity

"Some of the best travel moments happen when you allow yourself to get lost in a charming neighborhood, strike up a conversation with a local, or discover a hidden gem you never knew existed." -Jennifer Terra Halberg, founder  and luxury travel advisor at Jen Terra Travels (jenterratravels.com)

Save for a safari

"I think once in your life, you have to experience a Safari. The saying goes, 'You can leave Africa, but Africa never leaves you.'" -Ashley Lancer

"Thailand offers a great bang for your buck.  There are some stunning luxury hotels, it has a rich culture, and there are interesting cities, beautiful beaches, and lush, green countryside.  The food there is incredible as well."

-Rene Prasad

Your hotel matters

"I strongly believe in investing in a great hotel experience. Some people think a hotel is just a place to sleep, but I couldn’t disagree more. A well-chosen hotel elevates your trip—it’s your sanctuary after a day of exploring, it sets the tone for your experience, and it offers more than just a room: a welcoming atmosphere, an excellent concierge, a cozy lobby bar, and staff that can make all the difference."

Don't delay your adventures

"I'd thought about going to Antartica for a long time, and I’m glad that I did while I was mobile enough to get the most out of the trip.  There were some older passengers who didn’t do at least one of the landings because they were not confident enough to maneuver themselves into the zodiac boats.  Antarctica is the best "investment" I ever made." -Rene Prasad

Invest in a guide

"With all experiences and tours, I recommend booking a knowledge guide, as they will help you skip lines, uncover hidden gems, and provide insider perspectives, saving you time and enhancing your experience.  To maximize your trip, look for experiences that go beyond the usual tourist attractions – think food tours with a local, artisan workshops, cooking classes in a local home. These immersive activities offer a deeper connection to the destination."

Italy is always worth it

"Italy tends to satisfy every kind of traveler! A well-planned Italian itinerary can effortlessly blend culture, adventure, relaxation, and incredible food. We love creating multi-destination Italian itineraries which balance shorter stays in major cities with extended visits to coastal areas or countryside escapes. This way some can immerse themselves in history and art, others can indulge in food & wine, while those seeking relaxation can unwind at a spa or explore nature." -Jennifer Terra Halberg

Unplug as much as you can

"If you can, turn off work email. If you can’t resist looking (like me), travel somewhere with zero WiFi (like the Galápagos) so you are forced to decompress." -Jennifer Terra Halberg

Live like a local

"Leave time to explore where you are so that you have a chance to really connect with the destination.  Get to know the people who live there, wander through the streets, and visit local markets. One of my favorite things to do is to visit the grocery store or food market wherever I’m traveling to see what is different and what is the same." -Rene Prasad

Sail on a smaller ship

"I always recommend cruises for a multi-generational family.  This way if the wife wants to chill by the pool or spa, she can do that while the husband goes into port, the kids are at the kid’s club, and the in-laws are whoknows-where.  That being said, some people turn their noses up at cruises unless they like the big ships.  Please note there are so many vessels and different companies out there that people don’t realize. [There are lines that offer] 'accessible yachting,' bridging the gap between cruising and private superyachts: Ritz-Carlton Yacht, Four Seasons Yacht, The Orient Express yacht, and the new Aman Yacht which debuts in 2027. This trend offers the perfect blend of privacy, exclusivity, and socializing. What's more, these itineraries prioritize less visited ports and overnight stays, allowing you to immerse yourself fully in each destination." -Ashley Lancer

Buying and Selling a Home Takes More Than an Internet App!

Danna & Jen are the Team to Choose

“Danna and Jen’s market savvy made our recent downsizing project a true pleasure. Both Jen and Danna were fully committed to preparing our home for sale and staying in constant communication with us throughout the sales process — and patiently answering all of our questions along the way. The inevitable bumps in the road were addressed with professionalism, speed and effective problem solving, making a stressful experience easier than we could have imagined. If you’re planning to sell or buy in or around Westport, Danna & Jen are the best team in town. Their teamwork approach really works!” -S & T dannarogersandjenkass.com | info@higginsgroup.com

What To Expect At VersoFest

Reasons to invest in tickets to the library's annual celebration of music and culture— including an appearance by Paul Shaffer.

Paul Shaffer is not your average music legend. He’s best known for his stint as the music director for David Letterman, first on Late Night with David Letterman f rom 1982-1993 and then on the  Late Show with David Letterman from 1993-2015. He was also a member of the Saturday Night Live house band from the show’s first season in 1975, and became a featured player in the cast for one season in 1979. Paul’s career spans movies, television, and radio, and in 2009, he co-authored  We'll Be Here for the Rest of Our Lives: A Swingin' Show-biz Saga  with David Ritz. On Sunday, April 6 at 11:30 a.m., he’ll be here in Westport as part of the Westport Library’s fourth annual VersoFest, appearing with Christine Ohlman,  Saturday Night Live’s “Beehive Queen,” for the 2025 Oral History Podcast: Television Rocks! The talk is sponsored by the Y’s Men of Westport/Weston. Onstage, Paul and Christine will talk about Paul’s storied career, SNL’s 50th anniversary, his time with the “World’s Most Dangerous Band,” and more. (And yes, there will be music, too.) Westport Lifestyle caught up with Paul ahead of this exciting appearance.

WESTPORT LIFESTYLE: WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOUR APPEARANCE AT VERSOFEST?

Paul Shaffer: Christine will ask about me, but she also knows that I share her fascination for the details and the history of this music we love so much. We're gonna be tying that in in a clever way. And then I'm working on whether I can get her over to the piano and get her to sing some tunes, with me on piano, and maybe some duets. I don’t think we have anything to worry about.

WL: WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP LIKE WITH CHRISTINE?

PS: I've known her for quite some years now. I saw her working for my old pal G.E. Smith when he was conducting at Saturday Night Live, and then I met her and finally got to do music with her on a number of occasions. She is sort of a similar spirit to me when it comes to music, [particularly] her loyalty to the soul music that was around in the ‘60s when I was growing up, and that I still love. Of course, her look is nothing but '60s! [When I heard VersoFest would be a conversation with her,] I said ‘great. Sounds like a breeze!’

WL: VERSOFEST CELEBRATES MUSIC AND MEDIA, AND THIS YEAR WE HAVE THREE MUSICIANS WHO ARE ALSO AUTHORS APPEARING [FOR MORE, SEE PAGE 52]. WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING ON YOUR MEMOIR?

PS: It’s no secret that I had a ghostwriter, David Ritz (his name is on the cover!), and I actually met him 50 years ago when I was in the house band at  Saturday Night Live. Ray Charles was the host and musical guest, and David Ritz was around, as he had written the definitive Ray Charles biography. That’s when I first became aware of him. And when I got the opportunity to write a book, I was playing a gig with Jon Bon Jovi, and David

was working on a project with him. He said ‘if you ever want to do a book, let me know.’ When I told him I would have comedy in it too, he said he’d just finished Don Rickles' book. I said, well, you sound perfect for me!

WL: YOU’VE BEEN A PART OF SO MANY ICONIC LATE-NIGHT SERIES— FROM SNL TO LETTERMAN TO THIS PAST DECEMBER WHEN YOU APPEARED ON THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JIMMY FALLON TO ACCOMPANY DARLENE LOVE’S CHRISTMAS SET. IS THERE SOMETHING ABOUT LATE-NIGHT TV THAT UNIQUELY SPEAKS TO YOU?

PS: Just as I was finishing up the five years of  SNL with the original cast members, I got a call about David Letterman, when he was not the name that he became, saying ‘he's getting a morning show, would you be interested in being the bandleader?’ I passed. I just said ‘morning doesn't sound like me.’ Two years later, they gave him the show after Carson, and I got the call again. I thought ‘wow, even later than Johnny Carson? Now that’s more like it.’ Late night always seemed to have a more glamorous vibe.

WL:  SNL  IS TURNING 50 THIS YEAR. WHAT IS IT LIKE TO THINK BACK ON BEING A PART OF THOSE ICONIC FIRST YEARS, WITH THE SHOW’S CONTINUED LEGACY?

PS: Well, first, Lorne [Michaels], keeping it relevant all these years—what an accomplishment. The show is more of a conversation piece now than ever. I’ve been invited to some of the 50th anniversary events, and I’ll participate, too. [Ed note: you can catch Paul in the new documentary  Ladies & Gentlemen... 50 Years of SNL Music, now streaming on Peacock.]

WL: WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW THAT YOU’RE EXCITED ABOUT?

PS: I have a symphony show that I love to do. I’ve done it six times with six different orchestras and boy, what a feeling that is. That’s my favorite thing I do these days. Really, I just like to play songs.

MORE FROM VERSOFEST

The VersoFest concert this year features rock band The Wallflowers. Saturday Night Live isn’t the only thing turning 50 this year— Bruce Springsteen’s seminal album  Born to Run was also originally released in 1975. This panel will feature Bruce Springsteen’s manager/producer Mike Appel, Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music executive director Bob Santelli, former Columbia Records executive Michael Pillot, and author and music culture writer Kenneth Womack discussing this legendary release, and its continued impact 50 years later. Hosted by Arlen Schumer and Dick Wingate. The panel is on Saturday, April 5 at 1 p.m. in the Trefz Forum. Tickets, are free, but registration is recommended at versofest.org Henry Rollins. While you could hire us to create and cater a stunning spread for you, following this suggested menu will allow you to prepare your gathering ahead of time and fully enjoy the festivities once the party begins.

This Mediterranean tapas menu is filled with vibrant colors, fresh flavors, and a variety of textures. A beautifully curated spread like this creates a warm, inviting atmosphere where guests can gather, graze, and indulge. I say this all the time— people truly eat with their eyes—so crafting a table that is both delicious and visually appealing is always a win.

Jeffrey is our wine connoisseur at Marcia Selden Catering. He perfectly paired this Mediterranean tapas menu with three of Italy’s most popular wines: Barolo, Brunello di Montalcino, and Chianti Classico Riserva. Each wine brings its own unique character, from Barolo’s ethereal structure to Brunello’s rich warmth and Chianti Classico Riserva’s lively vibrancy, making for an unforgettable tasting experience.

To create the table design, I arranged the dishes on wooden boards, ceramic bowls, and platters. I also love adding visual interest by incorporating different heights using risers such as bricks, thick wooden boards, and rustic cake stands. Layering textures with linens, like these from the new line at Smith Party Rentals in Greenwich, enhances the overall aesthetic. Bunches of fresh herbs, flowers, and whole vegetables highlighted the natural hues of these spring ingredients, creating a striking and inviting display.

When designing this table, we intentionally created a “vegetarian vibe” with an abundance of options to satisfy even the pickiest eaters, ensuring there’s something for everyone. If you'd like to enhance the menu to cater to the meat lovers in your life, consider adding a charcuterie platter featuring finely sliced imported Prosciutto di Parma alongside a selection of your favorite Italian cured meats.

I also recommend including an Italian cheese board. Pecorino Toscano, served with truffle honey or fig jam, is a fantastic choice. Taleggio cheese is so yummy, with its rich creaminess, and pairs wonderfully with grilled ciabatta and a drizzle of aged balsamic vinegar. Gorgonzola Dolce, a milder and creamier blue cheese, compliments Barolo’s tannins, while Robiola is another excellent match, especially when enjoyed with great bread, extra virgin olive oil, and freshly shaved black truffles. Aged Parmigiano-Reggiano is the most classic pairing for Brunello and is also an outstanding complement to Chianti Classico Riserva. Like Pecorino, it shines when served with aged balsamic or a balsamic glaze. Lastly, round out your Italian cheese board with a super delicious Fontina Val d’Aosta, which pairs beautifully with Chianti. It’s not a super strong cheese, making it a great option for those who prefer a milder flavor.

The beauty of a spread like this is that you can make it your own. Whether it’s incorporating cherished family recipes, seasonal ingredients, or personal favorites, the joy is in personalizing it to suit your style and your guests' preferences. That might mean adding a homemade dip, a beloved dish, or a favorite artisanal bread. The key is to create an experience that feels effortless yet meaningful, ensuring every bite is as memorable as the gathering itself.

This season, embrace the art of effortless entertaining with a stunning Mediterranean tapas table. Let the vibrant colors and flavors, elegant presentation, and exquisite wine pairings allow you and your guests to relax, sip, and savor a culinary journey of deliciousness they won’t soon forget.

PROTECTING YOUR BIGGEST INVESTMENT

TIPS ON GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR HOME INSURANCE.

When it comes to home insurance, Tom Ayres, senior vice president of Cross Private Client Insurance, stands by the rule: There’s no such thing as a silly question when it comes to insuring your assets.

“Your home represents the biggest, most expensive investment most of us make,” he says. “Our due diligence involves asking a lot of questions, and our clients should ask questions of us as well.”

Providing relevant home insurance options for your situation means understanding your lifestyle, property, its contents and how you use them. For instance, aside from your main dwelling, do you have detached buildings on your land? Is your living room graced with fine art? Do you use your home as a short-term rental property?

These factors can figure into the kind and level of insurance you may want to consider. Since detailed insurance know-how isn’t something taught in school, most homeowners can benefit from an experienced, knowledgeable agent to help them navigate their own unique path, should an emergency arise.

In the event of a covered claim, a home insurance policy will provide funds to help with the cost to rebuild your home, replace its contents, and certain costs for your family to live elsewhere while repairs are being made. The typical policy also provides certain liability coverage; for example,  if someone slips and falls on your stairs.

The “cost to rebuild” can be confusing for clients, Tom says. Most homes in Westport are well built and maintained and that

CONTINUED >

should be reflected in this figure. It does not mean market value, but the cost the insurance company pays to rebuild the home you own following a loss. Some insurance carriers offer the option to purchase policies with “guaranteed replacement cost,” which means the insurance company agrees to cover the actual costs to rebuild, regardless of the policy limit, he says.

Tom also notes that some policies that are available in the market offer a “cash-out option.” Homeowners who suffer devastating losses, such as those in the recent California fires, can opt to take a lump sum payment in a total loss instead of attempting to rebuild their home. This option in a mass catastrophic loss area can greatly unburden a homeowner by providing real options at the time of loss. “You’ll have the option to rebuild the same home on the same property or take the cash payment, sell the land, and relocate.”

“An average home insurance policy provides replacement cost coverage for your personal property with a limit ranging from approximately  50 to 70 percent of the dwelling limit. Some carriers allow you to modify that limit, but most do not,” he says. Do you own a 1952 Mickey Mantle baseball card, valuable jewelry, or a wine collection? You need to share this information with your agent, who can provide you with options for adding a rider or separate “valuable articles policy” to your insurance plan.

Climate is a consideration, and Westport is no stranger to major weather events. While wind damage is usually straightforward, Tom says, water – in the form of burst pipes, leaky roofs, and ice dams – is a whole different animal. Water damage is now the largest contributor to homeowners’ claims, and it can get tricky when it involves seepage, mudflow, tidal surges, or a sudden inundation like Fairfield County coast received during Superstorm Sandy.

Tom notes that homeowners may want to consider erring on the side of caution. “Even if you’re not in a flood zone,” he explains, “if it rains hard and water pools on your lawn, you might want to [have] flood insurance.”

Homeowners should be careful to discuss all structures on their property with their insurance agent. Anything attached to the main house is considered part of the dwelling, but outbuildings, barns, or detached garages might need separate consideration on a policy, says Tom.

Clients should call their agents when considering a new use for a space as well, he said. Turning a walk-out basement into an in-law apartment, opening a home business, or listing your home as a way station for travelers may require insurance adjustments, he explains.

Major improvements to the house – such as a new roof or alarm or valve shut-off system – could signal a rate reduction. And be sure to call if you’ve made changes in the property ownership, including creating an LLC or trust.

“There’s only so much we can glean from people,” Tom says. “Communication with your insurance agent is really critical. We recommend calling your agent and asking questions.”

IT'S ELECTRIC

Meet the EV Club of CT, a place for electric vehicle owners to connect and share.

There are currently 52,691 registered electric vehicles in Connecticut, an increase of 45 percent in just 12 months. This is the kind of data Barry Kresch and  Bruce Becker, the president and the chairman respectively of the EV (Electric Vehicle) Club of Connecticut, love to hear— as proud EV owners, they want to share what they’ve learned with fellow and potential enthusiasts. The Club itself was founded by Westporter Leo Cirino in 2009, with the goal of connecting Westport-based EV owners. Barry, also a Westporter, has been “plugging in” since 2012, and he joined the club not long after. “When they installed four public EV charging stations with solar panels at the Metro North Depot, I

went,” he says. “That's where I met Leo and first got involved with the club.” A few years later, Barry and Leo organized a road rally event, which attracted Bruce, a Westport-based architect who has long felt a responsibility to ensure his personal and professional projects are eco-friendly. “I really enjoyed meeting people who shared an interest in EVs,” says Bruce.

The club has become a great outlet (pun intended) for EV drivers, renaming itself in 2018 to better serve its goal of encouraging more residents state-wide to go electric. There are now about 600 members, who do everything from interacting with potential buyers at EV showcases to CONTINUED

advocating for EV-friendly legislation to tracking and analyzing EV adoption in the state to serving as a resource for folks looking for more information about the cars. “People often reach out asking for information about purchase incentives, or installing a charger in their home, or how fast the vehicle will charge,” says Barry. “We try and have a presence at as many EV showcases as we can— it’s a great way to meet and talk to people and answer their questions.”

They also host events of their own, like the annual Northeast Electric Vehicle Symposium, a two-day event with an EV showcase, ride-and-drive opportunities, and panels, says Barry. “We also have club meetings, which will sometimes have informational speakers, either in-person or via Zoom— we recently had someone from the Consumer Reports Auto Test Lab do a review of eight of the recent EVs that they've tested.” For prospective and current owners alike, the club provides tons of education about these investment vehicles.  “There's lots of reasons to like EVs,” says Bruce. “They're more economical to operate and don't require the kind of maintenance that a gas car would require. They’ve got better acceleration. They've come a long way.”

The Income Tax Cocktail likely popped up during the Prohibition party scene of the 1920s. Its exact origin story remains a bit blurry, but it was definitely a hit in speakeasies.

The name? Well, it's like a cheeky nod to the idea that sipping on this cocktail might be more fun than paying actual taxes! Made with gin, sweet vermouth, orange juice, and a dash of bitters, it's like a boozy adventure for your taste buds, with hints of citrus and herbs. Despite its vintage roots, the Income Tax Cocktail still brings the party vibes, transporting you back to the roaring '20s.

THEULTIM ATEGIVER

Westporter Paul Newman

would have turned 100 earlier this year, on January 26th, 2025. There are many testaments to his enduring legacy in town: the Westport Farmers’ Market, which he helped found, the Westport Country Playhouse, which he supported in so many ways, and the Newman-Poses preserve, the preserved land in the Aspetuck Land Trust set aside in Paul’s honor. But perhaps the most visible piece of Paul’s legacy in Westport are the Newman’s Own head offices, located on Morningside Drive. It was there that, earlier this year, Paul Newman Generosity Day was born.

“Since 1982, Paul Newman and Newman's Own Foundation have given over 600 million dollars away to good causes,”  David Best, president and CEO of Newman’s Own, Inc., said at the launch event for the holiday. Those funds have supported organizations like SeriousFun Children’s Network, which provides no-cost summer camps for children and their families facing serious illnesses.  “We honor the remarkable spirit of generosity that [our founder] embraced [by]

David Best, Alex Amouyel, CEO of Newman’s Own Foundation, Helen McDermott, and Jennifer Tooker.

starting a new tradition, a day dedicated to inspiring acts of generosity.” The idea is simple: do something generous, then share it on social media (the hashtag is #PaulNewmanGenerosityDay). And then, challenge a friend to do an act of generosity as well, spreading the mission on to others. So while this year’s Generosity Day has passed, Paul would never have wanted giving to be confined to just one date on the calendar: the challenge element helps this initiative continue yearround, until the next Paul Newman Generosity Day. (Mark your calendars: January 26th every year!). “[This initiative is] a reminder that every one of us has the power to make a difference— big or small— in other people's lives,” said David.

The idea for Generosity Day sprung up when the Newman's Own team considered how to honor this landmark birthday, "Rather than an extravagant celebration, we wanted to honor his enduring legacy by creating a meaningful way to give back," David tells Westport Lifestyle.

When Paul Newman Generosity Day became official this winter, First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker declared it an annual holiday on behalf of the town. “There are so many ways [Paul Newman] and his family touched this community,” the First Selectwoman said. “We hope we are properly honoring him and his legacy today, and going forward.”

"Future goals include expanding participation globally, fostering year-round acts of kindness, and raising awareness for causes Paul Newman championed," David adds. "All while inspiring others to make generosity a daily practice."
