September Style
As the summer slooooowwwly cools down, style heats up. There’s no shortage of style in Westport and our September issue shows you the best. Three of our favorite stylists, Lucia Gulbransen, Hannah Spencer, and Michelle Cella offer their fall picks, and Kate Freeman of Encirkled shows us some fabulous jewelry options for your different looks.
A little over a year ago, two moms, Lisa Watkins and Katie Hill, decided to design a handbag around their water bottles. In less than a year, their HydroBags are being sold all over the country and every day brings bigger opportunities. It’s been an amazing, fast-paced, colorful journey.
Milana Barolotta has launched her first ever clothing collection, and it’s as breathtaking and bold as the city that inspired it: NYC. Her production choices are made with a careful eye to the environment and ethical work practices.
We can all make “green” decisions when it comes to clothes, and material and supply chain expert Jaclyn Lindsey-Noble lets us know how we can do that; Westport has many options and programs for lessening the negative impact of clothing production.
Yes, fashion is a tricky business. It’s also incredibly interesting. We asked Wall Street Journal reporter Suzanne Kapner some of our most burning questions, though we could have asked a million more.
And did you know Westport is home to one of the ‘60s most influential cover girls? Pam Barkentin was muse to legendary photographers and helped create the iconography of fashion. We’ve included her fascinating story and images from that important era.
Lastly, Discover Westport rounds it out with a list of dry cleaners, tailors, and shoe repair establishments. The critical businesses for every wardrobe. Enjoy the last days of summer and the first days of a new season!

Super Model, ‘60s-Style
ARTICLE BY ROBIN MOYER CHUNG
PAM BARKENTIN HELPED DEFINE THE IMAGE OF FASHION
Today, the glamour of the fashion industry is often eclipsed by its unreasonable standards of beauty and impropriety.
From Linda Evangelista infamously claiming to “never get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day,” to Bella Hadid admitting ”I was the uglier sister. I was the brunette. I wasn't as cool as Gigi, not as outgoing. That's really what people said about me. And unfortunately, when you get told things so many times, you do just believe it.” Each decade has revealed different layers of fashion’s seamy strata.
But back in the ‘60s, when the industry concretized its ideation, there were few, if any, egos or excess. Westporter Pam Barkentin, then a young model and muse, recalls the time as one of innovation, beauty, and companionship. “Lauren Hutton once called it a ‘sisterhood,’” recalls Pam. “And it really was.”
In many ways, Pam was destined to be a model. Her father, George, grew up in an artistic family; his mother was a playwright, scoring a Tony nomination in 1974 for Ulysses in Nighttown , and his father was a painter.
George became a photographer in the Army. On leave, he attended a party at the famous Tenth Street Studio Building in Greenwich Village and spotted cover girl (“that’s what models were called back then”) Jessica Patton across the room. They married on April 14, 1941.
Jessica, Pam’s mother, was attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts at that time, and her friends included classmates Lauren Bacall, Kurt Douglas, and Diane Dill. She modeled as a side hustle, soon becoming the top cover girl in the ‘40s, posing for Vogue, Mademoiselle, and more.

After the Army, George photographed for Collier’s and Mademoiselle. “He was one of [Mademoiselle magazine’s] favorite photographers. He shot at least half the covers,” says Pam. Then she undertones, “But he probably shot all of them…”
They moved to Westport when Pam was four.
Though Pam loved fashion photography - in the Staples library she poured over photos by Hiro, a man once celebrated as America’s greatest photographer - she decided to pursue acting.
She moved to New York City in the spring of ’62, her senior year at Staples, to take acting classes at night and observe myriad humanity during the day. She was living on her own, George carefully tracking every dollar she spent while paying Pam’s older sister, Perri, $20 a week to take care of her (she didn’t do a great job of that.)
For extra cash, Pam wanted to act in commercials. Jessica ran into photographer Richard Avedon, for whom she had modeled years before, and told him her daughter was interested in commercials.
So Pam went to see Dick a few days later, a 17 year-old girl clutching a manila envelope full of photos of herself. He set up a meeting for “Pammy Barkentin” at Harper’s Bazaar.
On her way back down to the lobby, a small Japanese man boarded the elevator. “Crooked nose, very good,” he exclaimed before introducing himself, to her surprise and delight, as Hiro.
“I worked with him all summer,” Pam muses. “He was a master of design and lighting. I had studied stage make-up the summer before, I loved extreme make-up, and he encouraged me to do it.”
Hiro photographed her for Harper’s Bazaar that summer while she also modeled for her dad.
“To be working with one of the best photographers in the world, the best clothes, the best editors, to me it was like ‘What the hell?’” she smiles.
At this time, the industry was small and supportive, the work collaborative and ground-breaking. Along with Lauren, Pam worked with Ally McGraw, Susan Blakely, and a number of European models. “We were smart, strong, creative women.”

“When I hear stories now… it wasn’t toxic,” she says of her experience. “It wasn’t about base things like drugs. I had a couple of weird experiences but not with the top photographers, they were masters.”
(To be sure, there are wonderful things happening in today’s fashion and modeling industry. There’s invention, art, largesse, and models empowering and educating other models. No amount of money or exposure can tamp the strong artistic visions of a creative few.)
After 10 years, in 1972, Pam was looking for a new challenge. She considered acting, but grew weary of auditions in which, “they always asked you to take off your clothes.”
Oh, the 1970s…
Instead, she turned to photography, having received an expert education through her work and knowing every art director worth knowing.
She proved to be quite talented and photographed celebrities and personalities such as Dudley Moore (“he played the piano for me”), Patricia Hearst (“There were lots of guidelines about what not to say when I was photographing Patricia… She was actually very easy-going”), and Peter Cook for the likes of Vogue, Self, and of course, Mademoiselle.

Growing up in the Soviet Union, Milana's love for clothes began at age 3. To her mother’s horror, Milana snipped lace from the curtains and skimmed leather from her mother’s coats to create design wear for her dolls.
Her family moved to the US when she was 14. She picked up English quickly and slowly adjusted to the unfamiliar culture of a foreign land.
After college in LA, she moved to NYC to continue studies at FIT, then landed coveted jobs at well-known brands where she honed her design and business skills.

Outfit Ideas from Three Top Local Stylists
LUCIA’S STYLE:
I would describe my personal style as classic, modern, and polished. I am most comfortable in tailored clothing and I love to wear color.
WOMEN SHOULD AVOID:
Adopting trends that do not work for them and wearing clothes that do not fit and flatter their body type and current lifestyle.
WHERE TO START THE OUTFIT:
The first step is to understand what you’re dressing for (events, venues, weather). Then select one statement piece and use that as inspiration to build the rest of your look.

HANNAH’S STYLE:
An edgy take on everyday fashion. Both a minimalist and a maximalist. I love the challenge of taking a simple item of clothing and wearing it in tons of different ways!
STYLE ADVICE FOR WOMEN AND MEN:
Fit and color. The way clothing fits your body is everything. It’ll make or break you. Don’t buy a smaller size just to satisfy your need to feel skinnier. The right color combination can also completely transform your outfit, and generate new options that increases your use for those items!
WHERE TO START THE OUTFIT:
I often start with bottoms. Do you want to wear pants, jeans, a skirt, etc? Once you determine the bottom, think about shoes. How do your shoes interact with your bottom choice? Then move on to the top and make sure to balance the top and bottom portions of your ‘fit.

MICHELLE’S STYLE:
My personal style is best described as classic chic mixed with a rock edge. I love to start with a classic piece, then layer in an unexpected twist like a concert tee, something with studs, rhinestones, or a biker jacket.
HER CUSTOMER:
My customer is a mom who is feeling stuck in a fashion rut. A woman who is no longer enjoying getting dressed, feeling unhappy with her body or just feeling overwhelmed trying to navigate so many fashion trends.
STYLE ADVICE:
The biggest mistake people make when dressing themselves is to create so many rules and restrictions about what they wear. So many women I work with decide something won’t look good on them without even trying it on, leaving them with a closet of all the exact same looking pieces.

What a WanderFull World
Two Stay-at-Home Moms Kickstart a Successful Business
ARTICLE BY ROBIN MOYER CHUNG
Here’s one for all of you moms who opted to give up your careers to raise your family.
It’s the story of WanderFull, the HydroBag that’s making waves in handbags, a sector unnoted for innovation. Nevertheless…
Years ago (but not too many years ago) Katie Hill and Lisa Watkins were moms at Kings Highway. They met over dinner one night, bonding over the deaths of their young fathers from cancer.
That’s sad, but there’s a point: In looking back at this dinner, each insists, “Our dads brought us together.”
The two chaired KHS’s Halloween-inspired Pumpkin Palooza for several years, one of the school’s largest fundraisers at that time. Lisa and Katie’s paloozas’ rocked, loudly - kids loved it, parents freebased Advil - and raised thousands of dollars. Their collaboration made them realize “We worked really well together.”
After, they often mused about starting a business, knocking around ideas, but it was never the right time.
Until it was.
Last year Lisa signed up for an Amazon FBA course. Katie decided to do it with her.
They brainstormed products they could sell, but nothing stuck. One day Katie bemoaned the lack of
cute ways to carry a water bottle. A passionate proponent of hydration who used to be a buyer for Saks Fifth Avenue, she recalled the wildly expensive and insufficient water-bottle bags swaying from the shoulders of models on fashion week runways.
Lisa demurred - “A water bottle bag? Is that really necessary?” she thought as she stuck a 32 oz bottle of water in her computer bag.
The bottle leaked, drenching the contents of her bag and destroying her laptop. She heard the universe remark: Uh… yeah it’s a good idea.
Thus manifested the zygote of the stylish, reasonably priced bag for a bottle of water, iPhone, wallet, and everything else you need (except for a laptop, but they now have larger hydro-totes for that.)
Reception was positive; people loved the fun, colorful bags. A woman in Long Island consistently ordered hundreds which she sold in her pop-up shops.
As we sit in Katie’s living room, both women laughingly recount what happened next.
“She’s the queen of analogies,” Katie says of Lisa, who turns to Katie and asks, “Can I say my analogy?”
Katie nods.
“I’m the explorer, forging ahead into unknown territory,” Lisa explains. “[Katie] holds me back.

Colorful HydroBags
Katie smiles in agreement.
They launched in March ’22. In addition to Amazon, they planned to work the pop-up shop circuit and popped up their first shop that May.
Conceding the pop was “good for consumer research,” after one day of standing outside in the cold, Lisa was, like, “Hell no. If I’m going to stand all day it’s going to be at the Javits.”
They ran the numbers and it worked.
So in August ’22, months after their first shipment of bags, they found themselves swamped with store- and business-owners wanting to sell their HydroBags.
“We felt like Cinderella at the ball,” recalls Katie. They didn’t have time to eat, and the event organizers took their photos and interviewed them as representatives of a Javits success story.
Other exhibitors complained about the lackluster turn-out of buyers, wondering if they’d even make back the fee they’d spent to be there. But by noon the first day, WanderFull had recouped the exhibit fee, and there were 3 1/2 more days to go.
They came away from the show with orders to sell product in over 100 stores across the country.
“I thought, ‘This is serious.’” Says Lisa
Katie exclaims, “I have the old Katie back!”
This whirlwind of success culminated in a hurricane of work. Katie spent long days sourcing product while boxes and boxes of bags landed at Lisa’s home. Friends, neighbors, husbands, and offspring frantically packed up orders. The friendly folks at UPS picked up hundreds of boxes from Lisa’s front hall each day. There were boxes piled in the living room, in the garage, in the office.
Of the 38,000 units sold as of the time of this writing, 70% were shipped from Lisa’s home. Thankfully, they now have a professional warehouse in Indiana.
I’m forbidden to include some of the heavy-hitters who’ll soon be stocking WanderFull bags - which now includes belt bags, totes, doubles, and more.
However, I am happy to write they’ve been featured on GMA two times, Today, and are in talks with HSN and a really important media personality. They’re on target to double their projections for 2023 and are doubling their projections for year two.
Almost every day brings new opportunities. “There are so many roads to Rome,” states Lisa, and we are exploring the best route for us.”

When I drop my inhaler or forget my passport, Katie is behind me picking up the details I miss.”

Business of Fashion
WSJ REPORTER SUZANNE KAPNER ANSWERS OUR RETAIL QUESTIONS
Westport resident Suzanne Kapner (SK) has been a Wall Street Journal reporter for the retail and fashion industry for the past 12 years: some of the most tumultuous and innovative time in retail history. Covering everything from fast fashion to consignment, bankruptcy to brick and mortar, high tech to Kanye West.
WLM : WHY DID YOU BECOME A RETAIL JOURNALIST?
SK : My career in journalism has allowed me to combine two of my passions, fashion and writing. I was a fashion design major my freshman year of college at Syracuse University. I won best designer that year for a suit I made. It’s navy blue wool with a magenta lining. I still have it. My sophomore year, I transferred to the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse and majored in journalism. I’ve been writing about fashion and the retail industry ever since.
WLM: HOW HAVE FASHION TRENDS CHANGED IN THE ERAS OF E-COMMERCE, SOCIAL MEDIA, INFLUENCERS, AND FAST FASHION?
SK : The legacy top down hierarchy of designers and fashion editors arbitrating what people wear has given way to a bottom up movement where influencers and other forms of social media set the trends. This democratization of fashion means that anyone can be front row at runway shows with a click of their computer mouse. Fast fashion chains make the latest designs accessible to the masses within weeks. And people can shop from the comfort of their couch.
WLM : HOW HAS THE BUSINESS OF FASHION CHANGED AS A RESULT OF THESE NEW DEVELOPMENTS?
SK : Companies are crowdsourcing ideas for new products and trends on social media platforms like TikTok. At the same time, they are paying influencers to be their brand ambassadors, while speeding up their production cycles to better compete with fast fashion chains and tap into the buy now, wear now movement. E-commerce has allowed startups to take share from traditional players and forced the behemoths to rethink their business models, including how many stores to operate and where to locate them. But the pendulum is starting to swing back in the other direction, as online brands open bricks-and-mortar stores of their own and sell their goods in department stores they initially shunned.
WLM
: IS SUSTAINABLE FASHION IMPACTING THE INDUSTRY IN ANY MEANINGFUL WAY?
SK : The biggest impact so far of sustainability is the rise of the resale market. It used to be that shopping for secondhand goods meant sifting through piles of clothes at the local Goodwill or a neighbor’s garage sale. Today, it’s as easy as hailing an Uber or renting a room through Airbnb. Bargain hunting, environmental concerns and the sharing economy have erased the stigma of used goods at the same time technology has made thrift shopping more accessible, reliable and cool. Brands are also starting to use more environmentally friendly fabrics and manufacturing techniques. But it's hard for consumers to separate what’s real from the green-washing.
CONTINUED > 61 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/WESTPORT SEPTEMBER 2023
WLM : HOW WILL AI AFFECT THE INDUSTRY?
SK : Retailers are starting to use AI to offer better product recommendations to customers, track their inventory and process returns. AI’s impact will continue to grow over time.
WLM : LASTLY, HOW DO CLOTHING BRANDS DETERMINE PRICE POINT, AND ARE THE HIGHER PRICES LEGIT OR A GATING FACTOR FOR THEIR IDEAL CUSTOMER?
SK : In the simplest form, brands take a markup on their costs, typically around 50% or even more for luxury goods. These days, technology is playing a bigger role in setting prices. Companies can adjust prices in real time based on sales or the competitive landscape. This is known as dynamic pricing. The inflationary pressures ushered in by the pandemic have pushed up prices for a range of goods across industries. Brands that are hot have the most pricing power and many luxury brands are taking advantage of this by raising prices exponentially. They are known as Veblen goods - status symbols for which demand increases as the price increases.

WHAT’S IN STYLE THIS FALL? SUSTAINABILITY!
I’m a terrible shopper. I’ve no idea what I’m doing. I rely on friends and my daughters (and their friends) to get through. Why? Every time I try to go it alone, I end up returning what I bought after my teenagers scoff at me (and yes – I do mean scoff).
Full confession, because why not? We’re all neighbors here. Not too long ago a friend came over and made me take maternity pants out of my closet (my youngest is 16). I also had an abnormal number of sweater twin sets from the 90s. I think I’ve said enough.
So… the idea of talking fashion and shopping with you, well, that’s a situation! My solution? Do what I always do: ask friends!
Enter Professor Jaclyn Lindsey-Noble, materials and supply chain expert who focuses on sustainable sourcing for the fashion industry, a professor at FIT and Fairfield University’s School of Business, and lucky us, a Westport resident.
Why Jaclyn? Well, first, her bio is insane with 30+ years in the apparel industry. Second, she’s fun. Third, she sees fashion through a lens of sustainability that really speaks to me . I can shop in a way that’s better for the earth? I’m intrigued. Sounds like a perfect reason to guilt-free run the credit card (n’est-ce pas?).
Jaclyn introduced me to a whole new way of seeing fashion, shopping, and my role in being gentler on our environment. “Consumers can play a huge part in helping the fashion industry when it comes to sustainability,” says Jaclyn. “By requiring brands to adopt new strategies that prioritize reducing, reusing and recycling garments and textile waste, consumers have the power to make change happen. We all have choices about where and what we buy and use. It’s up to us to use those choices wisely.”
These choices matter, as the issues facing the fashion industry are daunting: an estimated 100,000 billion garments produced globally every year and forecasted to triple by 2050.
With less than 1% of clothing currently recycled, an estimated 90 million tons of textile waste ends up in landfills each year, most of which impacts developing countries. Microplastic pollution, caused by fibers shed from synthetic materials during laundry, also poses additional risks to our health and ecosystems.
ARTICLE BY CAROLINE C. BARNEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY JERRI GRAHAM
Simultaneously, sustainable solutions must include improving labor conditions and ensuring fair wages for millions of individuals working within the industry and impacted by the rise of fast, cheap fashion.

USING OUR CONSUMER POWER TO HELP CHANGE THE ENVIRONMENT.

Ready to stroll down Main Street.
It turns out that we are buying 60% more than we did in 2000 and it's estimated that 20% of the clothing in our wardrobe is never worn (are sweater sets back yet?). It’s time to do things differently and it turns out that we have some great options here in Westport.
“Start with your own closet,” Jaclyn tells me. “What can you donate, upcycle (think repair), and recycle before you add more?”
This one was easy for me because, as I previously confessed, an intervention had already been staged in my closet. Unused, ill-fitting clothes had been donated or recycled. Am I killing it at sustainability yet?
“Next, embrace resale and reuse,” Jaclyn says.
Let the shopping begin!
It would be no lie to say that I have bought donuts from Coffee An’ at least 8 billion times (if you haven’t eaten these donuts you’re crazy), yet on all of those visits, I never stopped
at Cloud Nine Designer Consignments next door. I was missing out! Wanting to nail this fashion-focused situation and keep clothes out of landfills, I jumped on the chance to have Jaclyn show me how it’s done by visiting this fabulous store.
Here’s where I dragged along the younger humans. They just make everything more fun and, let’s face it, with modeling clothes on the agenda, if social media has taught them nothing else, it’s how to strike a pose.
The store’s owner, Cindy Burdo, welcomed our eclectic crew, helped style us, and before I knew it, the girls looked so fabulous they could be on the cover of Rolling Stones magazine (I know…I’m biased here). And Jaclyn was ready with outfits for a stroll down Main Street, a meeting at work, or a night out.
The punchline – we love our new clothes, shopped locally, had a blast, and now understand our roles as consumers a little bit differently. And if consignment stores don’t have what
“BY REQUIRING BRANDS TO ADOPT NEW STRATEGIES THAT PRIORITIZE REDUCING, REUSING AND RECYCLING GARMENTS AND TEXTILE WASTE, CONSUMERS HAVE THE POWER TO MAKE CHANGE HAPPEN.”

Materials and Supply Chain expert, Professor Jaclyn Lindsey-Noble.
I’m looking for, I’m going to take Jaclyn’s advice and use my spending dollars to influence the change I want to see by purchasing from sustainable brands.
Many retail stores in Westport fit this bill (pun intended). They support sustainability efforts through a combination of responsible design, reuse, recycle, repurpose and rental options.
“I’ve witnessed the relentless pace of fast fashion and how textiles have become one of the largest polluters in the world,” says Jaclyn. I’m using my experience and voice to be part of change in this industry. A change that we all can be part of as customers. When we ‘buy better’ we support those in the sector who are responsibly caring for our world and that is how lasting change is made, one person at a time.”
Thank you, Jaclyn, Cindy and the sustainable brands in town for taking steps to love this beautiful world with the choices you make. I’m now on this bandwagon with you too. Anyone else want to join us?

Anabelle Melendez was working in retail when the pandemic hit. Like everyone else, she hunkered down at home, wondering what kind of career landscape she’d find when it was safe to come out again.
As our ‘new normal’ took hold by mid-2022, the mother of three sons signed up for The WorkPlace’s Health Career Academy, eager to become a community health worker.
“It was the right choice. I loved it,” the Bridgeport resident says of the 10-week training program. “I really got hooked on the classes.”
But there was one problem. She needed a wardrobe that reflected and projected her newfound skills and confidence to potential employers –like those at Optimus Health Care, where she had snagged an interview.
“I didn’t have business clothes. I didn’t know how to accessorize for that,” she says. “I didn’t have the experience of what to wear.”
Enter Dress for Success Mid-Fairfield County. Armed with a referral for a free consultation and interview ensemble, Anabelle met with volunteers and quickly learned why they say clothes make the woman. After trying on a few options – finding a chic black jacket and slacks and two pretty blouses with a pop of red and purple – she left ready to turn the spotlight on herself.
“A stylist works with the clients and it’s a learning process,” she says. “But you feel more confident. You feel like you can conquer anything.”
The mission of Dress for Success is both simple and profound, says Michelle Artis, director of the Mid-Fairfield County affiliate. While more than 70 referral agencies, including human services
organizations and shelters, refer women to the Bridgeport-based affiliate for professional attire to wear to job interviews, what the women gain far exceeds a sharp-looking suit and a pair of heels.
Upon stepping through the door, each client becomes part of a network of support, receiving the development tools and encouragement to help her thrive in both work and life. They receive free career guidance, technology skills and job-seeking support, including interview prep and financial literacy and leadership training. The goal is self-sufficiency, giving women tools to seek out more resources themselves and, ultimately, develop and advance their careers.
About 400 women take advantage of the local affiliate’s services each year – more than 10,000 since it opened its doors in 1998, notes Michelle, who was tapped to run the local boutique and other programs after working at The WorkPlace for 2.5 years. With a long background in retail management, including stints at cosmetics counters, she understands how to work with women to make sure they feel their best when going into an interview or starting a first week on the job.
After the stay-at-home COVID years of nonjudgmental yoga pants, many women come in with a false sense of their own size, she says. Volunteer “suiters,” many of whom are former teachers and businesswomen, help them choose pieces that are both becoming and allow for freedom of movement.
“You don’t want to be distracted thinking about your clothes,” Michelle advises. “If you make sure a shirt is not too tight, you can feel confident to give that firm handshake.”

“A lot goes into it, but this job is everything I love to do wrapped up in a ball. And it’s women helping women feel their best.”
That kind of attention to detail and respect for clients started in 1996, when law student Nancy Lublin received a $5,000 inheritance from her great-grandfather and decided to turn it into an enduring gift for others. Teaming up with three nuns in her area, she founded Dress for Success in the basement of a Manhattan church. Today there are 140+ affiliates in 24 countries.
Dress for Success Mid-Fairfield’s gently used clothing comes from businesswomen from Westport, Stamford, Greenwich and communities and many pieces are high-end name brands. All the organization asks is that the pieces be recently cleaned and hung on hangers, ready for display.
Volunteer “sorters” go through the donations, weeding out anything that might not be suitable for a typical office or workplace.
Each client receives both a new outfit and the shoes, handbag and accessories to complete her look. Once she accepts a job, she can bring her hire letter to the boutique and choose six more mix-andmatch outfits for the first few weeks of employment.
Between word of mouth and the publicity Dress for Success MId-Fairfield County receives, the organization is able to go beyond the ensemble. Shelton-based law firm Berkowitz and Hanna regularly donates totes filled with toiletries and hygiene products and Subway has offered clients $10 gift

cards – perfect for grabbing lunch with new co-workers.
The annual Purse-suit of Success fundraiser held at waterfront Boca Oyster Bar in Bridgeport this year featured a silent auction with a Dooney & Bourke bag and Target recently donated a day of shopping for Michelle’s team that netted coveted larger-size shoes and 24 pairs of staple black pants.
The results are myriad. For Anabelle, Dress for Success means she can focus her attention on the many children and families she works with throughout her day, assisting them with the food, housing and other resources they need to lead healthy, productive lives.
“Bills don’t wait. The rent doesn’t wait,” she says. “It’s very rewarding. It makes my day putting smiles on faces.”
Michelle says she doesn’t know who is more grateful at Dress for Success – the staff and volunteers, the clients or the people who benefit from the clients’ newfound inner confidence and skill.
“A lot goes into it, but this job is everything I love to do wrapped up in a ball. And it’s women helping women feel their best,” Michelle says. “I love making people feel good. And with a perfect outfit, you can stand up a little straighter.”
The partnerships don’t end with a job offer. Dress for Success MId-Fairfield County has a Professional Women's Group (PWG) that offers networking events, mentoring opportunities and workshops to help women advance in their careers and maintain long-term economic independence.
“Sometimes it takes a village,” Michelle says of Anabelle and other clients. “Now we’re part of her village.”

Finding Confidence, Joy, and Meaning
SELF!SH BY STEPHANIE SZOSTAK
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME
Growing up, two of my most significant teachers were my dad and my brother. My dad taught me that the quality of my thoughts affected my performance—in life and, most importantly, on the golf course. “One shot at a time,” he’d remind me again and again to keep me focused on the present moment. My older brother didn’t give two turds about golf. He was a Rastafari, and a rebel. He taught me to be independent-minded and to not follow the herd. He questioned everything and saw the world in unique ways. He also made me aware at a very young age of the complexities of the human mind, as I saw him struggling to fit in and battle his heroin addiction. He died much too young at twenty-eight years old, and he continues to inspire me every day.

FASCINATED BY THE MIND
I wanted to be a social worker when I started college, to help kids like my brother. But instead, I did the more practical and predictable thing: studied business and graduated with a marketing degree. I landed in fabulous NYC, in the glamorous world of fashion at Chanel—this corporate cubical stint wasn’t quite the right fit for me BUT it ended up being a great dry run for what was on the horizon. At the age of twenty-nine, I followed a quiet but persistent inner voice and signed up for my first-ever acting class. It was a theater studio in New York City and it was serious work. There were working actors and students. Twice a week, I’d watch them put up scenes of plays I’d never heard of and slip in and out of themselves. They made it seem so simple, so natural. The playfulness, the physicality, the freedom, the pain, the exploration, I was blown away by it all. It took me weeks to get my butt off my chair and get on stage and when I finally did, I lasted no more than a minute. “Stop!” my teacher bellowed, “I don’t believe a word you’re saying!” She sent my scene partner back to his seat and laid into me for what seemed to be an eternity. She crushed me. The audacity I had thinking I was ready to work, thinking I could waltz myself into “acting” just because I wanted to. The disregard I had for the craft. The incapacity I had at standing on my two feet. The permanent smile on my face—“Is what I’m saying funny to you?” she asked. I shook my head no. She humiliated me. She pissed me off. She hurt me. But she woke me up to my pretending, to a part of myself I had buried deep inside of me. I knew I had to do this. I knew I had found my passion (and my teacher!). So, I didn’t become a social worker. I only “play pretend” for a living, but still, as an actress, I get to dig into the psyche of characters, even if only fictional, and try to understand why they do the things they do and think the things they think. Why do they get in their own way and not necessarily do what serves them best? How ironic is it then that a decade after I started my acting career after making my way from independent movies to playing Jacqueline Follet opposite Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, I had to dig into my own psyche and figure out why my mind was undermining my confidence, my joy, and my well-being?

LOSING MY WAY
“That sucked. They’re gonna think it sucked. They’re gonna think I suck. I do suck. What am I doing here? I don’t belong here. I’m gonna get fired.” That was my inner dialogue on the set of my first lead role in a major studio film, Dinner for Schmucks. I was flooded with self-doubt. My inner dialogue was toxic. I felt like an outsider. Like a complete beginner. I lost my way. There I was, being handed the opportunity to work with comedic icons Paul Rudd and Steve Carell, and I lost my ability to trust, play, and let go. I completely lost my confidence and I didn’t have the tools to shake off the mental chatter and recalibrate.
LEARNING NEW WAYS
My mother told me that her forties were her best decade. She said that, for her, it was when she finally knew who she was and didn’t care what other people thought. Well, I was forty and I was longing for a whole lot of that. I had some learning to do and began DIGGING into books, podcasts, and online courses. I incorporated new daily rituals into my life that worked for me—gratitude, meditation, and journaling. I learned new skills that helped me not only with my confidence and mental health but also gave me a new outlook on life—a new sense of purpose and meaning—that was bigger than my career and bigger than me. I got a clearer idea of what kind of life I wanted to live and who I was. I got a Mindset Makeover....
BUT THE CHALLENGE REMAINED....
How would I remember all this guidance? How could I give it staying power? I heard the psychologist and grit expert, Angela Duckworth, explain on the Finding Mastery podcast how she can “help people make plans to change and make differences in their lives but—Why doesn’t it stick? Why isn’t it accumulating?” That is precisely the WHY behind The Self!sh Playbook.

My Personal Style Journey
I moved from Kansas to a Boston suburb right before 7th grade.
In Kansas, we bought our clothes at Macy’s and our girl scout uniforms at Litwin’s. To me, Izod was the height of style. I strutted around in shirts, shoes, even socks tricked out with small green alligators.
But in Hingham, far from the flint hills and fields, schoolmates breathlessly discussed “Laura Ashley,” and “Gloria Vanderbilt.” I wore heartprint turtlenecks, LL Ben duck shoes, and whatever coordinating outfits my mom loaded into our cart at Marshalls.
My first brush with serious style was a few years later; a friend of the family was wearing a double belt. I had seen these belts in Vogue and Elle. I had no idea regular people could actually wear such high-fashion accessories.
In record time, I owned three of them. I had tasted blood. I saw someone wear a cummerbund so I sewed my own awkward cummerbund. Someone else wore a cute little stuffed mouse pinned to their shoulder. I made one of those, too, and smugly affixed the crazy thing to my shoulder. If I wanted to wear it, I made it happen.
Homemade Pierre-Deux-like purse (DIY!), scarves (vintage!), boxer shorts (repurpose!) duck-taped penny loafers (repair and rewear!).
By college, I had acquired a taste for clothes I couldn’t afford. No matter; I raided the sales bin at Betsey Johnson, wore ties as belts, and Levi’s jeans like the ones the French guys wore.
After graduating, I scoured the sales racks at Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus, buying cut-rate treasures, some of which I still wear today. I trolled consignment shops; then a nascent and disorganized industry.
I couldn’t pay full-price for the designer togs I wanted, not on my advertising salary, but sales shopping taught me the actual, not the intrinsic, value of good clothes.
A fringed Missoni dress for $35, an embroidered Prada coat for $60, a Thierry Mugler trench coat
for $70. Do I ever wear it? Not really. But it was only $70, I don’t have to wear it.
Today, I still cobble together a wardrobe from consignment, sales racks, and a few things for which I throw out all logic to acquire. Sustainable? Mostly! Happy coincidence.
I wonder, however, had I an unlimited clothing allowance would my wardrobe be any different? Would I splurge for the $1,250 Libertine lobster-print khakis or still prowl Poshmark for a sensible $15 Lilly Pulitzer embroidered pair? Maybe. Maybe not.
Personal style is something honed throughout our lives, a reflection of how we were raised, what we value, and whether or not we chose to rebel against what our moms made us wear. Consider that some of our first autonomous decisions were what we decided to wear that day.
It’s also about editing, like never again wearing a hand-made stuffed rodent on our shoulder.
