GIVE THE GIFT OF EXPERIENCES

“Christmas

is

a

together sort

of holiday.”

— Winnie the Pooh

As the year winds down and the lights of the holidays begin to glow across Eagan and Mendota Heights, I’m reminded once again of what makes this community so extraordinary — our spirit of giving. December has always been one of my favorite issues to create because it shines a light on the quiet heroes among us: the people and programs that remind us that generosity isn’t seasonal — it’s a way of life.

This month, we step into stories that capture the heart of giving in its many forms. At The Commons on Marice, you’ll find determination and hope packed into every punch at Rock Steady Boxing, where participants are fighting Parkinson’s disease with courage, laughter, and community. Their strength is a powerful reminder that resilience often looks like showing up — again and again — even when the battle is invisible.

Then, there’s the Eagan Men’s Chorus, whose harmonies have lifted spirits for more than forty years. Whether performing for veterans, seniors, or civic events, these men give the gift of connection — one song at a time.

On a grander stage, we highlight the Minnesota Vikings and the NFL’s My Cause My Cleats initiative, where players use their platforms — and their footwear — to bring awareness to causes close to their hearts. It’s proof that purpose can live even in the most unexpected places.

Of course, giving can also mean sharing time and joy with those we love. This season, American Cruises & Tours reminds us that experiences make the most memorable gifts, while Conquer Ninja Rosemount offers the perfect way for kids to burn energy and build confidence during winter break.

As always, I would like to thank all of Eagan City Lifestyle’s sponsors. Their generous support enables us to get our magazine directly into our readers’ homes. Please don’t hesitate to contact me (eagan@citylifestyle.com) if you have a story to share or a business to recommend.

From all of us at  Eagan City Lifestyle, thank you for making our community one that leads with heart. We wish you a season filled with peace, gratitude, and giving.

FIGHTING PARKINSON’S TOGETHER,

one punch at a time

Rock Steady Boxing Eagan, where community, courage, and connection help those living with Parkinson’s fight back.

At first glance, the gym at The Commons on Marice doesn’t look like your typical boxing ring. There’s no roaring crowd, no spotlight, no winner’s belt waiting at the end. Instead, there’s laughter, focused energy, and a group of determined people gloving up to fight something invisible: Parkinson’s disease.

This is Rock Steady Boxing, an affiliate of the global Rock Steady Boxing program with more than 800 locations in 14 countries. Here in Eagan, it’s led by Jeff Rank, whose dedication to the program comes from a deeply personal place.

“In 2008, my grandfather was diagnosed with Parkinson’s,” Jeff recalls. “At the time, I didn’t know much about it. By the time he came home from the hospital, I had to build him a ramp just so he could get inside.” That moment changed everything.

RANK’S PATH TO ROCK STEADY BOXING

Jeff sold his share of the family painting business and went back to school, earning a degree in Health Fitness with a focus on special populations. His path eventually led him to Rock Steady Boxing, where he found the perfect combination of movement, science, and compassion.

When he joined The Commons on Marice after the pandemic, classes were still small and mostly virtual. Today, over 60 members gather in person several times a week, forming a tight-knit community built on sweat, support, and shared experience.

“We have three levels of classes,” Jeff explains. “Level one is the most advanced, while level three is for those using mobility aids. Each class is capped at 15 people, so we can really focus on individual progress.”

The workouts are non-contact but intense. Think punching bags, agility ladders, and balance drills that keep participants moving through every plane of motion. Studies suggest that high-effort exercise may slow the progression of Parkinson’s symptoms, helping participants regain strength, coordination, and confidence.

But if you ask Jeff, the most powerful part of Rock Steady Boxing can’t be measured by heart rate or reps. “Parkinson’s can be very isolating,” he says. “It’s hard to talk about what you’re going through. But when you walk through our doors, there’s zero judgment. Everyone here gets it.”

ROCK STEADY BOXING MEMBERS GIVE BACK TO EACH OTHER

That sense of giving, not just of time or resources, but of empathy, encouragement, and shared humanity, is what keeps members coming back. They lift each other up on hard days. They celebrate every victory, big or small. And in that circle of care, people rediscover parts of themselves they thought were gone.

“We’ve had members who can golf again, or even go grocery shopping for the first time in years,” Jeff says. “Those are huge milestones. I tell our boxers all the time. They still have their best years ahead of them.”

The Eagan group’s camaraderie stretches far beyond the gym. They’re active in fundraising for national Parkinson’s organizations, raising over $11,000 for the Parkinson’s Foundation walk this past May and more than $26,000 for the American Parkinson’s Disease Association.

Jeff also serves on the board of Patient Research at the University of Minnesota, where he’s the only member without Parkinson’s. “That gives me access to the latest scientific information,” he says. “I can bring that knowledge directly back to our members and make sure what we’re doing reflects the most current research.”

Education, movement, and community are exactly what make Rock Steady Boxing different. New members begin with an assessment, which helps determine the right class level and provides a baseline to track progress over time.

ROCK STEADY BOXING

Want to try a class? Rock Steady Boxing at The Commons on Marice offers classes for all ability levels. To get started, contact Jeff Rank for a personal assessment and placement in the right class. Call (651) 688-9999 or visit commonsonmarice.org/rock-steady-boxing to learn more.

“When you walk through our doors, there’s zero judgment. Everyone here gets it, and that makes all the difference for those living with Parkinson’s.”

FROM HOPELESS TO FINDING HOPE

“People come in feeling hopeless,” Jeff admits. “They’ve been given medication, and that’s it. But medication only treats symptoms—it doesn’t slow the disease. Exercise can. And when they start seeing improvements, it changes everything.”

Even those facing advanced symptoms or related conditions, such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), the same diagnosis as singer Linda Ronstadt, or other movement disorders like Ozzy Osbourne’s form of Parkinsonism, find encouragement here.

Three years in, Jeff has become a trusted resource for doctors throughout the region, who now refer their patients directly to Rock Steady Boxing at The Commons. “Doctors are excited when they hear their patients are boxing,” he says with a smile. “They know it’s helping.”

In the spirit of giving, the members also give back to each other, to the cause, and to themselves. They show up early just to chat, share jokes, and swap stories. The dopamine boost from friendship is just as important as the one that comes from movement.

As Jeff puts it, “Never feel like you’re the only one and there’s nothing you can do. You are stronger than you think. And we’re here to fight alongside you.”

This December, that’s what giving looks like. People who keep showing up, gloves on, ready to fight for one another.

SONGS THAT GIVE BACK

ARTICLE BY ANN SCHREIBER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW SOUSA
“WE’RE NOT DOING THIS FOR APPLAUSE— WE’RE DOING IT BECAUSE MUSIC CAN BRIGHTEN SOMEONE’S DAY.”

FOR MORE THAN FOUR DECADES, THE EAGAN MEN’S CHORUS HAS SHARED MUSIC’S JOY AND CONNECTION THROUGHOUT THE TWIN CITIES.

When Jim Andrews talks about the Eagan Men’s Chorus, his voice carries the same warmth you might hear in one of their songs. “Music is a wonderful thing,” he says. “We’ve seen moments where people are brought to tears, and sometimes to smiles, and that’s why we do it.”

The Eagan Men’s Chorus (EMC) has been part of the community for over forty years, performing for those who can’t always attend public concerts. Their mission is simple but meaningful: to make music, entertain, and bring fellowship to audiences who need it most. With around 15 concerts each year at senior centers, nursing homes, veterans’ facilities, and civic events, these men give their time and their voices to lift others’ spirits.

MUSICAL ROOTS AS FAR BACK AS THE 1980S

Jim, the Chorus Governor, first got involved back in the early 1980s when the group was known as the “Sperryaires.” At the time, he worked for UNIVAC (now more often referred to as Unisys) in Eagan. “The employee programs were active then, and they gave us permission to start a male chorus within the company,” he recalls. “That’s how it all began.” The group sang for company events and gatherings, but when corporate sponsorship ended, the Eagan Parks & Recreation Department stepped in to keep the music alive. In 1999, the group officially became the Eagan Men’s Chorus.

Today, they rehearse on Monday nights from September through May at Augustana Lutheran Church in West St. Paul. Their current director, Kathy Andrews, Jim’s wife, brings her own energy and musical expertise to every rehearsal. “It’s a sweet story,” Jim says with a smile. “Music brought us together, and now she’s helping to lead this group.” Kathy also directs the choir at Augustana Lutheran Church, while pianist Becki Warnock provides accompaniment for the chorus.

EVENTS FOR ALL SEASONS

Each December, the EMC presents a Christmas concert in Eagan, and this year’s event will take place on December 13 at Christ Lutheran Church. “It’s one of our favorite times of the year,” Jim shares. “People love the traditional songs, and we usually raise funds to support our program.” In the spring, the chorus will hold another concert, continuing their mission to bring music to audiences throughout the community.

But the highlight of every year is the Big Sing, a weekend gathering of men’s choruses from across the Upper Midwest. “This coming April, we’re going to Appletown, Wisconsin,” Jim says. “We’ll have 13 or 14 choruses performing over the weekend. Each group sings two numbers for adjudication and receives feedback from directors. There are workshops, sight-reading sessions, and a big Saturday night concert with about 200 singers on stage.”

The weekend ends with what they affectionately call the “afterglow,” a dinner celebration where the groups unwind, share stories, and sometimes even perform one more song just for fun. “It’s a full weekend,” Jim laughs, “but it’s always rewarding. We come home tired, but happy.”

MUSIC IS ABOUT MORE THAN PERFORMANCES

For the chorus, the music is about much more than performance. It’s about human connection, something Jim has witnessed time and again. “We’ve had people who haven’t spoken in years suddenly start singing along with us,” he recalls. “You can’t describe how powerful that is. It reminds us that music reaches a part of the soul that words alone can’t.”

The group currently includes about twenty members, though they’re always eager to welcome more. Jim says. “Just come to a rehearsal and see how it feels. After the holidays is a great time to join since we’ll be preparing for the Big Sing.”

As a nonprofit 501(c)(3), the chorus relies on contributions, grants, and performance fees to sustain its mission. They’re funded in part by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, as well as annual support from the Eagan Rotary Club and the Eagan Foundation. Each fall, they also hold a fundraising drive to encourage local businesses and individuals to get involved.

MUSIC AND THE SPIRIT OF GIVING

For Jim, the heart of the chorus is its spirit of giving. “We’re not doing this for applause,” he says. “We’re doing it because music can brighten someone’s day. It’s about sharing something we love with people who might need it most.”

So, whether they’re performing at a veterans’ home, leading carols at Christ Lutheran, or singing shoulder-to-shoulder with 200 other voices in Wisconsin, the Eagan Men’s Chorus continues to live its mission: spreading joy through music, one song at a time.

If you’d like to attend a concert, book a performance, or join the chorus, visit www.eaganmenschorus.org for more information, or just stop by a Monday night rehearsal. There’s always room for another voice.

HOW VIKINGS PLAYERS USE THEIR CLEATS TO CREATE CHANGE

PURPOSE ON THE FIELD

| PHOTOGRAPHY BY MINNESOTA VIKINGS

In December, the bright lights of U.S. Bank Stadium shine a little differently. Amid the sea of purple and gold, players take the field in cleats splashed with color, symbols, and words that tell stories far deeper than touchdowns. This is My Cause My Cleats—the NFL

yellow laces—a design that captured the energy of street art and the creativity Juxtaposition Arts inspires.

Linebacker Bo Richter chose to honor the Wounded Warrior Project, recognizing the strength and resilience of U.S. veterans who continue to serve

“FOOTBALL IS MORE THAN A GAME— IT’S A PLATFORM FOR PURPOSE.”

initiative that allows players to turn their footwear into a canvas for change.

For one week each season, the league lifts uniform restrictions to give players an opportunity to raise awareness for causes close to their hearts. What began as a small gesture in 2016 has become a powerful movement—one that turns the field into a gallery of hope and humanity. Each player’s cleats reflect a deeply personal commitment, from fighting childhood cancer to supporting mental health, youth mentorship, and equality.

Across the Minnesota Vikings roster, that spirit of giving runs deep.

In December 2024, wide receiver Justin Jefferson stepped into the game wearing cleats designed to spotlight Juxtaposition Arts, a Minneapolis nonprofit that empowers young artists through mentorship and creative enterprise.  His custom pair featured a bold black base with vivid red and yellow accents, complete with bright

long after their military careers end. His camouflage-toned cleats symbolized courage, sacrifice, and the shared sense of brotherhood that defines both soldiers and athletes.

Fullback C.J. Ham dedicated his cleats to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, a cause that carries deep personal meaning after losing his mother to the disease. His design—a powerful mix of purple and silver—served as both a tribute and a reminder of the families still fighting.

Even General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah joined the movement, supporting both The Hidden Genius Project , which mentors young Black men in technology and entrepreneurship, and the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital , a longtime Vikings partner providing life-changing care to local families. His choice reflects the organization’s broader commitment to education, innovation, and community health.

But My Cause My Cleats is about more than awareness—it’s about action. Many players auction their custom cleats after the game, with all proceeds going directly to their chosen nonprofits. The program has raised millions of dollars and, perhaps more importantly, has sparked countless conversations about the issues that matter most to those wearing the uniforms.

For Minnesota fans, it’s a reminder that the Vikings’ impact goes far beyond the scoreboard. These athletes live and give in our communities—mentoring youth, visiting hospitals, funding scholarships, and standing with families facing challenges. Through every painted shoe and every story told, they show that leadership isn’t confined to the field.

This December, as the Vikings take the field once again in their hand-painted cleats, the designs will differ—but the message will be the same: football is more than a game; it’s a platform for purpose. And for Minnesota, that’s something worth cheering for all season long.

SIX EUROPEAN RIVER CRUISES TO INSPIRE YOUR NEXT ESCAPE

As the season of sparkle and celebration approaches, many of us start thinking less about gifting things — and more about gifting experiences. The best gifts, after all, are the ones that last long after the wrapping paper is gone — moments that fill our hearts and our photo albums. If your wish list includes more adventure, romance, or time spent exploring the world together, a European river cruise might be the perfect present to yourself or someone special.

Europe’s rivers wind through landscapes steeped in story — castles perched on hillsides, vineyards turning gold, and villages glowing with holiday lights. A river cruise offers an effortless way to experience it all: no constant packing, no long drives, just a floating boutique hotel delivering you from one beautiful city to the next. The rhythm of the water invites you to slow down, savor every moment, and see the world from an entirely new perspective. Here are six unforgettable itineraries to inspire your next getaway.

CRUISE THE DOURO FOR SCENERY AND HISTORY

Portugal’s Douro River flows through the sun-kissed hills of the Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its terraced vineyards and port wine. Cruises typically begin in Porto, where cobbled streets and colorful buildings set a vibrant tone. As you drift inland toward Spain, you’ll encounter ancient villages like Castelo Rodrigo and the lively old town of Salamanca — the perfect blend of beauty, history, and hospitality.

DISCOVER CULTURE ALONG THE DANUBE

The Danube River — Europe’s second longest — flows through ten countries and four capital cities, including Vienna, Budapest, and Bratislava. Holiday sailings bring travelers face-to-face with grand cathedrals, music halls, and festive Christmas markets where the scent of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine fills the air. Whether you’re drawn to the elegance of Vienna or the charm of Hungarian villages, the Danube delivers a journey as rich in culture as it is in scenery.

FIND ROMANCE ON THE RHINE

Flowing from the Swiss Alps to the Netherlands, the Rhine is a storybook brought to life. Towering castles, half-timbered towns, and steep vineyards line the banks, with the UNESCO-protected Rhine Gorge offering some of Europe’s most breathtaking views. During the holidays, the region transforms into a fairytale — think twinkling lights, hot cider, and cozy villages that feel straight out of a snow globe.

EXPERIENCE ART AND ELEGANCE ON THE SEINE

The Seine meanders through the heart of Paris before continuing toward the French countryside and the historic beaches of Normandy. From the deck, you can watch the Eiffel Tower sparkle or disembark to explore Monet’s gardens in Giverny. With its mix of art, history, and romance, a Seine River cruise feels like an extended love letter to France.

STEP BACK IN TIME ON GERMANY’S MAIN RIVER

The Main connects the Rhine and Danube, winding past medieval towns and baroque palaces. In Bamberg, a UNESCO-listed gem, you can sip smoky local beer while wandering cobblestone streets. Nearby Würzburg invites visitors to explore the opulent Residenz Palace and festive wine markets. For travelers who savor old-world charm and craftsmanship, this route is pure delight.

Europe’s rivers wind through landscapes steeped in story — castles perched on hillsides, vineyards turning gold, and villages glowing with holiday lights. A river cruise offers an effortless way to experience it all.

WANDER THE WATERWAYS OF THE LOW COUNTRIES

The Netherlands and Belgium are laced with scenic canals that burst into color during tulip season and shimmer with lights in December. In Amsterdam, visit the Anne Frank House or glide past 17th-century gables. In Belgium, savor artisan chocolate in Brussels or shop for diamonds in Antwerp.

THE GIFT OF EXPERIENCE

River cruises are about more than just the journey — they’re about connection. Share dinner with new friends, join a wine tasting, or sit beneath a canopy of stars as Europe drifts quietly by. These intimate sailings invite you to embrace slow travel — to wander, wonder, and rediscover the joy of seeing the world without hurry.

This holiday season, consider giving yourself (or someone you love) the ultimate gift — time to slow down, explore, and be inspired by the beauty of the world. A European river cruise is the perfect way to unwrap it.
