I asked Jara to repeat what she told me, because I couldn’t wrap my post-childhood brain around it: there’s a non-toxic, tear-free tasty bubble juice!
When you catch a bubble on your tongue or accidentally inhale its spume, it doesn’t taste like unclean sponge water! It tastes like milk chocolate chip or glazed cinnamon roll or, drum roll, bacon (for bubble-eating pups and experimental bacon lovers.)
Westporter Jara Negrin, aka Posh Mom, ticked off a few more cool items: eye drops that contract the eyelid muscle to give the appearance of an eyelift; “Here for You” hats and sweatshirts to raise awareness of depression (a percentage of the profits go to charity); DIY flower bouquets, sampler boxes of Rebel Daughter cookies.
All of these items, plus parenting tips and advice, are available on her new live-stream shopping site, PoshMom.com (PM), devoted to helping moms and dads find the best stuff in home decor, wellness, beauty, and more. The posh posse - all local women and most are moms - vet every item,
“Moms who create businesses are timestrapped and overwhelmed by the marketing, we help them get their product marketed.” -Jara
“These women also host livestreams, fielding customer questions and discussing the products they endorse. These are recorded and kept on the site so customers can watch them when they’re ready to shop.”
seeking new, interesting, and safe goods that won’t strain credit cards. “We’re like Goop, in an accessible way,” she explains.
But PM is more than a standard marketplace.
PM partners with high-profile influencers and celebrity moms - “posh pros” - to advocate for their favorite products. For instance, she works with the mom/owner of @SamsonTheDood to glean the best stuff for parenting and pooches, such as the light-up collar worn by Samson himself and his doods.
These women also host livestreams, fielding customer questions and discussing the products they endorse. These are recorded and kept on the site so customers can watch them when they’re ready to shop.
Finally, a posh-prep for entrepreneurs: PM provides a platform and “crash-course” in marketing an online business. “Moms who create businesses are time-strapped and overwhelmed by the marketing,” Jara explains. “We help them get their product marketed.” (Of note, they help everyone who sells with them, not just the moms.)
This help includes teaching them sales tactics and how to tell their story, for which PM is primed. As a child, Jara was in 75 national commercials, including a Wisk “ring around the collar” ad. (Does Wisk still exist? No. And the decades-long campaign ended when consumers realized that a man’s dirty neck stains aren’t his wife’s fault or responsibility.) And, in a previous iteration of PM, she frequently appeared as an expert on TV morning shows to discuss her product recommendations.
As well, VP of Content and Strategy Ali Dorfman’s background is producing stories for network TV. So all posh participants benefit from their expert advice.
Get to know a bit more about Jara on her stylish and sweet Instagram, @PoshMomLive, where she surprises moms with blow-dry certificates, curates professional advice, and generally makes people happy.

The next time you find yourself stuck in downtown traffic, which will be very soon, peer upward as you inch past 58 Post Road East, across from Anthropologie and above Brown Harris Stevens real estate office.
You’ll note a large red second floor: this is Toquet Hall (TH), a chaperoned student center for tweens and teens with a small sign indicating one should go to the backside of the building for entrance.
According to Henry Carson, President of its Student Governing Board, TH is “The place that tries to make sure teens have a place where they feel comfortable, where they can share interests and a place where they have a community.”
The space is an enormous loft, tricked out with colorful swaths of fabric on the rafters, scores of video games and shelves of board games, table hockey, snack bar, and signed posters pinned to the walls.
It was originally built as an opera house in 1892 by resident Louis Toquet (pronounced toe-kay),
in which “gentlemen” were charged $1 for entry and ladies were either not charged or not invited - they are not mentioned on an invitation from that time (which hangs in TH).
Despite its many transformations sincedance hall, town hall, inventors’ workshop, and Westport’s first movie theater - vestiges of its elevated architecture remain: vaulted ceiling, hardwood floor, stage, and a “catwalk.”
In the mid-90s, Dale Pfeiffer spearheaded the raising of almost $400,000 ($750,000 today) to convert the then-vacant space into a gathering spot for “artistic and musical purposes.” (NYT)
Why? Parents were worried about the same things parents are today: alcohol, theft, drug use, and the myriad pressures of an affluent community. (Fortunately for those moms and dads, iPhones and social media had not saddled them with our shiny, new terror.) Instead of lectures and threats, they decided a vice-free zone would help alleviate untoward behavior.
The list of policies (no drinking, no drugs) is on the site and, according to Youth Services Director Ken Godburn, the student governing board of TH works hard to enforce them.
Throughout the past 25 years, TH has hosted young bands, comedians, stage performances, film screenings, fundraisers and more. This past June, Staples Players performed The 9 Worst Breakups of All Time to a sold-out audience.
While it may not boast the iconic parade of hitmakers that famously fired up the auditorium of Staples High School, such as The Doors, Cream, and The Yardbirds, TH has hosted plenty of impressive talent. Comedians Bill Burr and
Mike Birbiglia, recording artist Rachel Platten (Fight Song), American Authors - then The Blue Pages (Best Day of My Life) and Jack Antonoff currently of fun..
Designed to “meet the critical and emerging needs of teens in our community,” (website) TH provides a safe and confidential refuge for Kids In Crisis, LiveGirl, and other support groups.
An active student board helps run and govern TH, giving kids yet another opportunity for enrichment. Right now they’re busy planning events for next year, such as concerts, Dungeons & Dragons, and paint night.
It also keeps the kids safe, busy, included, and out of traffic jams.

When I was young, the thrilling chime of the ice cream truck sent every kid in the neighborhood thundering home and hollering for money. We’d fist our coins and sprint to the street, hotly anticipating its approach.
But the VonLoeser sisters - Reagan (17), Addison (15), and Samantha (12) - don’t wait for the truck to arrive. They are the truck. You’ve probably spotted their College Creamery ’79 Chevy with colorful stripes at Compo or Longshore.
ARTICLE BY ROBIN MOYER CHUNG PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF COLLEGE CREAMERYTwo years ago, in 2021, their mom, Fabiana, ran across an ad selling the College Creamery ice cream truck business. As “kind
of a joke,” Fabiana suggested the girls buy it. “We told them at a young age we weren’t paying for their college,” she explains, and thought it would be a viable way for the girls to earn tuition money while learning how to run a business.
They bought the business that October and were busy booking events as early as January ‘22. “When [the previous owners] said busy, they meant busy,” exclaims Fabiana.
Though Fabiana and her husband, Gavin, own the business on paper, the girls are responsible for its operation. This includes managing the inventory, re-stocking,
scheduling events, reading emails, keeping everything clean, etc.
Events can run from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. without breaks (who eats ice cream that early in the morning? “You’d be surprised,” the girls respond.)
But if learning to run a business is the sundae, then life lessons are the cherry on top:
Reagan says of her interaction with so many people, “I wasn’t expecting to improve my socialization skills.” Also, because “there are always little kids and they don’t know what they want,” she’s learned to become more patient with others.
“But if learning to run a business is the sundae, then life lessons are the cherry on top.”
Addison agrees, and adds she’s now a more punctual person, having to focus on “time management with sports and school and business.”
For Samantha, the shaved ice has taught her “there’s always room to improve.” She explains how the long lines of customers made her feel she had to make the shaved ice quickly, “but then you end up spilling syrup and not making it well.” So she slowed down, took her time. Her skills are much improved and everyone still gets their ice in a timely manner.
They’ve also learned about giving back to the communities that support them. They donate portions of sales, raffle prizes, and gift certificates to local philanthropies, schools and sport organizations.
Fabiana, their designated driver (the lack of power steering and tricky journeys require an adult at the wheel), states, “I didn’t expect how much I’d enjoy being in the truck with the kids.”
Her daughters agree, “We love it, we have so much fun!” They mention dance parties and laughing together on the road and at events.
Then Reagan reflects, “The way our parents raised us is to be independent and to make our own way in the world so that we always know how to take care of ourselves.”
Which is the greatest lesson of them all.
Our client first approached us in July (2022). Recently widowed and frustrated that her property had been on the market since 2020, she felt overwhelmed, alone and unsure how to proceed. She needed guidance. The first question she asked of us: can you sell my home before the holidays and get a good price for it?
Buyers were not making offers for a reason. The home, while lovely, needed a transformation. We recommended staging and improvements to the landscaping. To reduce stress, we managed the extensive process for her. Our advice and guidance captured the home’s beauty and built a trusted connection with our client.
The property sold in 3 months for over ask. The buyer? Someone Cindy showed the property to on Thanksgiving. When we say we are available for our clients - we mean it!

9. 7. 10. 6.When it comes to Disney vacations, relaxation might not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, The Four Seasons Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort offers a luxurious and tranquil retreat just minutes away from the parks. With newly renovated accommodations, exceptional dining options, and a range of amenities, this resort is the perfect escape from the excitement of the theme parks.
Getting there from Westport is easier than ever. After a short 30-minute drive to the Westchester airport, you can park the car and walk into the terminal in about 3 minutes. No bridges and no time on the perpetually clogged Van Wyck Expressway.
The Park View Deluxe suites are a sanctuary for the family visiting Orlando attractions. The features are modern, elegant, and an ideal counterweight to the controlled chaos of amusement park visits. The spacious living areas include comfortable sectional sofas and spacious outdoor balconies, while the sophisticated bedrooms include accent lighting and cozy oversized chairs. A closer look at the renovated suites reveals fun details, like the wall motif with hidden castle, honey pot, and star incorporated into the design.
If you're visiting the parks with young ones and heading back to the hotel a little early, don't worry about missing the famous fireworks. The resort's suites offer a beautiful balcony view of Epcot and Magic Kingdom. You can catch the fireworks from the balcony while indulging in room service, luxuriating in the provided adult and kid-sized Four Seasons bathrobes.
Food enthusiasts will be delighted by the diverse culinary options at the resort. Capa, the rooftop steakhouse and bar, offers Spanish-influenced cuisine with fresh seafood and expertly grilled cuts. The outdoor patio restaurant also provides magnificent views of the nightly fireworks. Ravello offers a memorable character breakfast experience with Goofy and pals, while the Lobby Bar serves creative cocktails and fare.
The Four Seasons Resort at Disney provides exceptional amenities and activities for all guests. The adult-only oasis pool offers a peaceful retreat, while families can enjoy the water park with water slides, a lazy river, and a splash zone for little ones. The resort also offers a full-day kids' club. The expansive family pool is gorgeous with
ARTICLE BY ALEX FRANKLINan infinity edge that joins aesthetically with the natural beauty of the neighboring lake. The staff at the pool is attentive and upbeat, always making guests feel welcome.
While the kids are occupied, take the opportunity to visit the spa. A spacious oasis dedicated to relaxation, the spa offers plenty of indoor and outdoor options. In addition to massages and facials, the spa offers unique treatments like Vibrational Sound Therapy and innovative IV Vitality Drip therapies.
Designed by Tom Fazio, the 18-hole golf course was the home to a 2021 LPGA Tour event. The fairways and greens are stunning and, as a Certified Audubon Sanctuary, home to a wide range of Florida wildlife. The course also has a 16-acre practice facility with TrackMan video swing analysis, a putting green, and a short course.
If tennis is your game, there are three courts available. Take lessons from an on-site pro, join a daily clinic, or just challenge a loved one to a match.
Not to be overlooked, the early entry to the parks for Four Seasons hotel guests is an absolute game-changer. Disney has opened some new attractions in the last several years and this perk guarantees you early access with limited crowds. We all love Space Mountain and have a special place in our hearts for Pirates of the Caribbean, but the new Tron Cycle ride is a modern roller coaster with plenty of Disney magic elevating it to something bigger and better than just another roller coaster. Combine that with all the other parks, attractions, and new additions, and you'll find something new every time you visit.
The customer service provided by the Four Seasons is unparalleled. Their dedicated staff
is always prepared to offer assistance, whether it's providing recommendations, making reservations, or sharing insider tips, ensuring a stress-free Disney vacation. Before our first day at the parks, we approached the concierge for some water bottles to bring with us. We soon realized that time was running out, and we might miss the shuttle from the hotel to the park if we waited any longer. Understanding the urgency, one of the warm-hearted front desk staff members took the initiative and personally met us at the shuttle in the sweltering Florida heat, providing us with cold bottled water to keep us hydrated.
As a final testament to the dedication of the staff, when we arrived at the airport to return home, our daughter realized she left her beloved Minnie Mouse necklace in the room. It was too late to go back to the hotel, as we didn't want to risk missing our flight. Without prompting, the hotel staff contacted us and let us know they had found the necklace. They offered to overnight it to our home in Connecticut. True to their word, the necklace arrived at our house the day after we returned home.
Staying at The Four Seasons Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort was truly a special experience. The outstanding staff truly shines as one of the best in the world. They made the planning and experience of visiting Disney parks easy, luxurious, and comfortable. We left Disney feeling relaxed.
Now through September 30, 2023, guests can enjoy greater savings on their summertime escape with the Resort's Stay Longer - Fourth Night Free offer.

As a parent with many options, getting your child into the best possible school money can buy is your top priority, right?
Wrong.
“You want a community that accepts and values your child,” says Chris Pryor, president and founder of The Gowan Group, a Westport-based independent school consulting firm celebrating its 10th anniversary in Westport. “Everyone wants strong academics, of course, but it’s about finding a place where your child is comfortable and can stretch themselves.
“It’s really about connections.”
And that’s where Chris and his team come in. With a decade in the business of helping schools navigate the highly competitive world of strategic planning, marketing and branding, his team is uniquely adept at finding the perfect fit for children and teens.
To say Chris knows a thing or two about independent schools is a true understatement. Chris Pryor lives and breathes independent schools.
He has held leadership positions at New York’s Harbor Country Day, Hackley, Rye Country Day and Tuxedo Park schools and The Independence School in Delaware, and was actively involved in the New York State Association of Independent Schools.
With a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Roanoke College and a dual master’s in educational administration and curriculum and teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University, he started his career journey as a student himself at Kent School.
There, Chris met Don Gowan, a fellow Kent alum who was his boys’ lacrosse coach and dean. It was Gowan who would show Chris just how life-changing a good mentor can be.
“Don Gowan stood for integrity, honor, fair play, respect and innovation. Gowan Group emulates him in these ways,” Chris states of the firm’s namesake.
With more than 30 years experience in the independent school system, Chris has
consulted with, learned from and befriended a diverse group of trustees, alumni, admissions and development personnel and more. He’s also assembled The Gowan Group’s savvy team, capitalizing on their insider’s view on independent schools in Connecticut and beyond.
“We all went to private school and we all worked in them for years,” Chris remarks. “One of us had a father who was the headmaster at Deerfield. He grew up there. We have a tremendous amount of experience and know the schools well.”
Leading the placement team is Director Paul Baly, whose 25-year career includes working in a variety of boarding, K-8 and K-12 schools.
“I saw over and again the transformational nature of an independent school education. That transformation relies on deep and meaningful relationships between students, teachers and parents,” Paul says. “When kids feel seen and known, they have self-assurance to become the very best versions of themselves. Achievement and success become the outcome.”
While the state of independent day and boarding schools in New England is strong, what they’re looking for in a student has changed dramatically since Chris was at Kent.
“Gone are the days of only the elite going to independent schools,” the Westport father of three says. “Schools have become far more inclusive. They value a diverse student body. And the boarding schools have an international student component.”
As a result, many offer millions in financial aid and actively solicit applications from school systems across the state. With so much opportunity and so many schools touting what they consider their distinctive qualities, the search for the best school for each child can be daunting.
“They’re all very different and each has its own character,” Chris says. “Hotchkiss is very different than a Pomfret or a Canterbury. And some schools are real pressure cookers. Some kids thrive in that atmosphere – and some do not.”
The Gowan Group takes time to get to know each family it serves, learning as much as it can about a child’s strengths and challenges and unique way of learning and going about the day.
Pro tip for finding the perfect fit? Start this fall for September 2024 admission. With application deadlines in the late fall and early winter, families should give themselves plenty of time to research and visit the schools on their wish lists, Chris says.
The Gowan Group can assist along the way, helping first-timers navigate the complex world of K-12 placements and coaching prospective high schoolers on interview technique and gathering their ideas and anecdotes to shine in personal essays. Even students who don’t need that much individualized attention might benefit from a strong sounding board or sage advice for looking for schools that cater to specific learning needs.
“We know the terrain and the best way is a thoughtful, personal approach,” Chris says. “The Gowan Group has never done anything cookie cutter.”
TheGowanGroup.com
“I SAW OVER AND AGAIN THE TRANSFORMATIONAL NATURE OF AN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL EDUCATION. THAT TRANSFORMATION RELIES ON DEEP AND MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND PARENTS,” PAUL SAYS.
“Every valuable human being must be a radical and a rebel, for what he must aim at is to make things better than they are.” -Niels Bohr
Anne Grossman wasn’t the kind of rebel who slashed tires or wore strange make-up to frighten the elderly. She never threw rocks at squirrels or tried to trip power walkers.
No, she was the worst kind of rebel.
She was the rebel who constantly tangled her parents into insidious knots of reason. Why are tattoos bad? What’s wrong with swearing? Why can’t I wear this?
“My older brother is a rule follower,” she recalls, “I came along and gave my parents gray hair.”
Thus she was bestowed the cognomen, “Rebel Daughter.”
But age softens insolence and, in her 30s, she channeled her renegade nature into a most noble initiative: cookies. Big, fabulous concoctions that juuust skirt the boundaries of acceptability in polite society.
Chocolate chip cookies, yes. But also rainbow cotton candy cookies topped with pop rocks and edible glitter.* Fluffernutter cookies made with homemade peanut butter fudge, marshmallow, and chocolate chunks. Unicorn sugar cookies rolled in fruity pebbles, with a rainbow white chocolate and nerds candy center.
Her Norwalk bakery, Rebel Daughter Cookies (RDC) is, fittingly, based in the art park Isaac Square. During the pandemic many businesses in the square went under, making it as depressing as all get-out. As a salve for the community, real estate developer Jason Milligan transformed it into a rocking outdoor museum, filled with paintings and murals by local artists such as one of our favorites, 5iveFingaz.
The raucous, edgy images compliment the no-rules creative vibe of her treats. She commissioned artist Weverson Ponte to paint his signature vibrant murals on
the outside and inside of her building (though most of her business is mail order, she does maintain some retail hours).
The journey began when, a few years ago, Anne wondered, “I always thought I’d be a stay-at-home mom - why am I feeling empty?” She took a long walk with her daughter, then it hit her, “I realized I wasn’t being as creative as I have been throughout my life.” Oh - and she had been searching in Connecticut for a chocolate chip walnut cookie as good as she had eaten in Brooklyn.
She started baking a half-batch of chocolate chip cookies every day. After a month and a half her husband and taste tester, Scott, remarked, “I think you’ve got it.”
Scott was thinking bake sale. Anne was thinking nationwide.
Then… “People told me ‘What are you going to do with the kids?’ ‘You’ll never make any money.’” Her inner-rebel twitched. No ill-advised comment was going to slam the brakes on her cookie train. She stayed
up late learning photography and building a website until every cynic realized “I wasn’t turning back.”
An avid lover of sweets, she bases her goodies on beloved childhood desserts - key lime pie, churros, s’mores - and adult flavor profiles such as smoked and ube. When she first started, in 2019, she’d make a cookie up to 20 times to perfect it. Now she can nail a new taste in only 3-5 bakes.
Always on the menu at RDC are eight ever-changing “crowd favorites” and three “lactation” cookies. What’s that? Cookies made with oatmeal, flax seed, and brewer’s yeast, a combo which increases breast milk. Why? They taste
far better than the “gross bowl of oatmeal [she] could barely choke down” while nursing. (Anne assures me that eating them will not effect spontaneous lactation.)
She also had the great idea to train her two kids to say, “Mommy’s cookies are the best cookies.” This backfired. “Now they say that about every cookie,” Anne smiles.
Not every idea is a winner. The cookies, however, are. Anne admits, “I wake up every day excited about the future.”

“My older brother is a rule follower, I came along and gave my parents gray hair.”
There’s nothing traditional about Cajal Academy, for twice exceptional children (those who are academically gifted and need special education.) Cajal is the school I wish existed when I was young.
I suffer from Ehlers Danlos Syndome (EDS), a multi-systemic genetic disorder affecting my connective tissue. In short, this means my hypermobile joints dislocate and sublux on a frequent basis, leaving me
in chronic pain and in need of multiple surgeries. Like many with EDS, I also have dysautonomia (a.k.a. POTS), which affects my blood pressure, heart rate, and gastrointestinal system.
Cajal Academy, which teaches students whose special needs include EDS, could have taught me life skills necessary to improve my strength, stabilize my joints, and manage my POTS. Instead, I suffered from “the most neglected disorder in modern medicine” silently, without a diagnosis or help, until I was almost 30.
At Cajal, bright colors are eschewed in favor of a muted color scheme preferable for those with sensory processing disorders. A vast selection of seating - from medicine balls to Yogibos to pod chairs - fill the classrooms, enticing children to choose the most comfortable option for their various conditions.
A former closet serves as a relaxing craniosacral therapy room, and there are physical and occupational therapy spaces, too. Did I
“We’ve seen kids go from severely behind in a given area to ahead of the grade, and that’s because we’ve identified and built up those low-lying skills.”
mention there’s a full-time neuropsychologist, occupational therapist, and four physical therapists on staff?
A tween boy greets me, eyes twinkling as he presents his latest project: a mathematically devised model Medieval city. Down the hall, a teen girl sits atop a medicine ball, immediately correcting her posture as a fellow student reminds her not to hyperextend her knees. The occupational therapist directs the students to be mindful of their alignment as they continue to balance.
Not every Cajal student suffers from a connective tissue disease, but they all benefit from the school’s research on how different physiological systems interact. Body positioning, self-correction, and learning to manage things like circulatory shifts that cause brain fog are essential skills. These skills lessen pain and injuries they’ll experience later in life and help them focus on learning.
None of the happy and outgoing children I meet look like they have a disability; their challenges are invisible. According to Cajal co-founder, Cheryl Viirand, traditional schools tend to accommodate a child’s challenges instead of teaching them to rewire their brains to tackle their struggles. “The brain constantly rewires itself, reallocating resources to the networks needed to perform its most requested skills,” she explains. “The good news is, you can turn that process around and build up those low-lying skills by strategically pinpointing and targeting them.”
A fellow EDS sufferer, Cheryl has two gifted sons with the disorder, among other complex issues. Unable to find a Connecticut-based school offering integrated therapies to help them, Cheryl worked with her kids’ OT, Heather Edwards, to start her own.
A social entrepreneur and former attorney, Cheryl dug into the science on how children learn, socialize, and grow. Alongside Edwards and neuropsychologist Dr. Steven Mattis, she developed protocols to put this science to work in the classroom.
Together, they created a phenomenally effective curriculum, not to
mention the world’s first program empowering children with connective tissue disorders. In addition to learning core subjects from five subject specialist teachers, Cajal’s students are taught to self-monitor, self-manage, and self-advocate for their needs.
The secret to the school’s success is in its multi-disciplinary method—melding psychology, neuropsychology, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, as well as regular lessons. This holistic approach to learning is one-of-a-kind. It also means parents won’t have to waste time and money on hundreds of afterschool appointments; the children receive the help they need on campus.
Each student receives an individualized program developed with the help of neuropsychological and physical therapy assessments. This includes a toolbox of problem-solving skills to help tackle their specific challenges. For example, a child with writer’s block might do an obstacle course with a teacher to get the ideas flowing. In time, the child will learn to identify cues and manage their issues effectively on their own.
As Cheryl emphasizes, a child needs to feel safe to learn effectively, but until the body is regulated, they can’t feel comfortable. These skills ensure that every child is primed for learning. “We’ve seen kids go from severely behind in a given area to ahead of the grade,” she explains of the curriculum. “And that’s because we’ve identified and built up those low-lying skills.”
Near the end of my visit, Cheryl pauses our interview to help a new student get properly aligned in the reading corner, a task made more challenging by the girl’s loose connective tissues. Cheryl helps another teacher correctly position the Yogibo, a foot stool, and another pillow used to prop up the book, so the girl’s cervical spine is perfectly positioned.
When they’re finished, the girl is comfortable, a weighted blanket draped across her lap to help train her brain to map the new, corrected posture. A soft smile graces her lips as she reads about dinosaurs in a school that finally accepts her differences and celebrates her superpowers.
Q&A with Cheryl Viirand
SM: HOW DOES CAJAL ACADEMY DIFFER FROM OTHER SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL SCHOOLS?
CV: Most special education schools define their cohort based on their disabilities, but we define ours based on their superpowers. All the students here have very high analytical reasoning and creative thinking skills.
The kids are doing standards-based academics, solving real world problems in collaboration with one another, creating projects that have no ceiling to them. There's plenty of room for intellectual growth. We just happen to be teaching them at the same time how to optimize relative to the challenges that they didn't ask for.
SM: HOW DOES CAJAL HELP PREPARE ITS STUDENTS FOR LIFE AFTER SCHOOL?
CV: We give our students the science and an understanding of the data in their own profiles, so they are empowered to understand and make connections for themselves. We also coach them in strategies to use in the community, at home, in college, and beyond, to manage their differences so they don’t stand in the way of who they want to be. How much more empowering to say, ‘let’s give you a toolbox to be in charge of that now?’
SM: SOME PARENTS WORRY ABOUT THE STIGMA ASSOCIATED WITH SENDING A CHILD TO A SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL SCHOOL. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THEM?
CV: Stigma comes from a vast misunderstanding of how human beings work. This is not about holding your child back or putting them in a bubble. This is about empowering your child by helping them crack the code on how to bring their best selves intellectually, socially, and emotionally. We’re turning that over to kids who happen to be differently wired, so they can turn their unique ways of seeing the world into cultural and scientific advances that can one day benefit us all.

There is a lot of pent up demand among current Westport and Weston homeowners and tenants to move to new homes, as a large percentage of people have been waiting for “the right time.” This fall is a great opportunity to start the process as the demand is finally subsiding (a bit).

Guiness, WriterKiwi’s supposedly a Boxer/Staffi mix but we’re skeptical. She’s solid muscle, runs super-fast, and has no concept of personal boundaries. She loves treats, mealtime, and people, especially people who feed her.
She doesn’t love wearing necklaces, but happily accepts the treats with which I bribe her. She’s very sweet and enjoys digging deep holes all over our yard.
This is Benny Berniker, he’s a super sweet and gentle 6 year old Golden Doodle, though as you can see, he’s black and white. This coloring is known as a ‘parti’ doodle. But Benny does not like to “party,” he likes to nap! He sleeps like a human, either on his back or spooning with one of his parents. He’s also known for chasing shadows and seems to be quite paranoid. He’s always got either a sock or a shoe in his mouth and eagerly offers one to anyone who comes in the house. We love Benny as our perfect third child.
Billie is named after Billie Holiday and she loves rolling in deer pee and pooh. The Compo beach during the winter is her favorite place and she hasn’t met a puddle that she won’t drink from. She’s a delight and joy to watch enjoy life. Should there be a zombie apocalypse, she’d be the perfect dog to try to survive with.
Our Morkie (Yorkie Maltese mix), Max, is the undisputed king of our castle. Our friends, who are well aware of our Max-mania, decided to take it up a notch and commissioned a painting of him as a Nobleman. We couldn’t stop laughing when we saw it, but we loved it so much that we hung it up in our mudroom. Now, every time we pass by, we can’t help but bow down to our furry overlord. All hail King Max!
Coco and Buddy bring endless joy into our lives. They are not just our dogs; they are cherished members of our family, and the unconditional love they offer us is truly a gift beyond measure.
It was love at first sight! Little did we know that the poodle part of her doodle gets her running more than a little anxious. Her current situation is that she scans the ceiling of any room she walks into, checking all corners in case a bug is lying in wait. For what? We don’t know. But she thinks it’s reason for concern. All she wants is to defend the universe from the impending doom of the spider in the midst. Didn’t see this coming when we picked up this furry bundle, but we wouldn’t have it any other way!

Chickens have become increasingly popular as pets in both suburban and urban areas during the last 20 years. Backyard chickens may seem to be an unsuspecting animal to keep as a pet but the tried and true egg producers are back in fashion as food costs are soaring and families are looking for more food independence in light of recent supply chain shortages. There’s a lot to like about raising chickens in your backyard. Surprisingly, chickens are relatively low maintenance. And bonus – unlike dogs, they don’t need to be bathed or groomed, and they don’t shed on your clothes or require training. Oh and bonus – they make you breakfast.
The eggs from backyard chickens are the best—tastier and fresher than any store-bought eggs. Much of the day, the birds entertain themselves, picking at grass, worms, beetles, and all of the good things that go into making those delicious farm eggs. Plus, with their keen eye for insect pests, chickens make for great gardening companions.
Chickens can provide family companionship, fun, entertainment, sustainable fresh food, and plenty of poop that gardeners prize as a natural fertilizer/composting material. Could backyard chickens be the perfect pet/producer to add to your home?
Chickens are sociable creatures, so plan to keep three to six birds at least. With this amount, you’ll always have a steady supply of eggs, since an adult hen lays about two eggs every three days, on average. Local ordinances also dictate how many chickens one household can keep.
All of this costs money, of course. The materials to build and furnish a coop and a 20 x 5-foot run—including wood, fencing, and hardware—are going to set you back at least $300. If you can’t do this work yourself, you’ll also be buying skilled labor.
Overall, expect to spend between $500 and $700 when getting started depending on the size of your flock, coop and run. For prefabricated coops, expect to pay $600 or more.
Chickens need to have an enclosed coop that provides adequate space, protection from the elements and predators, and good ventilation. A modified shed, barn, or stable with an outdoor run is a good option for a coop. The outdoor run should be fully enclosed if you have predators like hawks or owls nearby. Ideally, coops are slightly elevated off the ground to prevent flooding and have windows on each side, enough nest boxes to allow several chickens to nest simultaneously, outlets for lighting, fans if they’re needed, air inlets or ventilation holes on the roof, and a concrete floor treated with a pet-safe waterproof coating that allows for easy cleaning and drainage.
Search Pinterest for “chicken coop building plans” if you’re building your own or consider going the luxury route with a gorgeous custom-built coop from a company like CutestCoops.com
Most hens will start laying eggs when they’re about 18 to 20 weeks old, although it may take more time for them to reach their peak output. Often, the first eggs are laid irregularly or are smaller or oddly shaped when compared with a typical egg. This is nothing to worry about! Once a cycle is established, most hens will lay one egg per day.
Is August really “carefree”?
I once read a line in a local publication about a mother spending her summer days “having a blast” with her three young children at Compo Beach.
Also a mom of three young children at that time, this line made me pause. Was I, too, having a blast with my kids at the beach? Yes… but really no.
It was me against three, against ocean, playground, bubble gum machines (now gone) and whatever else commanded their immediate and unmitigated attention. They were cute, they were mine, but they were work.
I spent most of my time trying to manage one while the other two scattered in directions unknown. I endured countless scowls from folks whose parenting skills were, apparently, sharpened on grittier stone than my own.
I once asked a friend if he had a “blast” on the beach with his kids. “Yes!” he enthused. Then he conceded he was referring to evenings (read: wine and apps) with his wife while their au pair monitored their two kids. Said au pair
also de-sanded, de-sunscreened, and helped wrangle the post-beach kiddies into bed.
Last summer a friend posted a photo of her family in Italy. They were stunning. She and her husband and her now-teenage girls smiled beatifically, in a way that made one believe in fairy tales.
When I saw her back in Westport I asked about their glamorous and enviable escapade. “It was awful,” she replied. “It was so hot and the kids argued the entire time.”
I adore this woman.
Of course, years later, my thoughts wander. I think of my kids begging me to swim in the cold surf so I can grab their warm little bodies as they sputter by, of them piling broken shells into my hands so I can add their treasure to my seashell bowl in the dining room, of them excited for me to share their joy in crawling around the diminutive jungle gym.
For them, these days are carefree. These are amazing and irreplaceable days that we create for them.
To all parents: job well done.
