Can You Believe It's July?!

Summer is sun-time, and that’s when Westport shines.

The Levitt Pavilion, a Westport institution, has been working all year to bring the best in performing arts and concerts - read the “real” story behind the outdoor stage and some fun anecdotes about stars who have rocked the stage.

The Levitt lawn opens early, while the sun is still bright, so remember to wear sunscreen. Dr. Annette Czernik fills us in on what the sun does to your skin and how to prevent damage. And, if you haven’t been successful at prevention, how to exact revenge.

If you’re about to kick off the summer with your kids, consider inviting a child who lives in the city. The Fresh Air Fund is always looking for host families; they know that a summer in a beautiful coastal enclave can be a transformative experience.

Looking for a beach read that’s impossible to stop reading? In “The Last Mrs. Parrish,” written by sisters, one of whom lived here, you’ll recognize many Westport landmarks. We’ve included an excerpt to get you started but can’t reveal too much…

Prefer pools to the beach? All American Pools and Custom Spas lets us know what’s popular and practical in today’s cool dips. You can stock up on beautiful towels from Yvonne Claveloux, a local artist who’s bringing her colorful art to totes, towels, and more.

Or think about throwing a pool party with plenty of cocktails and… charcuterie! Fairfield County native Marissa Mullen has a new book which guides you step-by-step in making the ultimate Cheese Plate.

I’m sure you’ve noticed the changes to Sherwood Diner. Who hasn’t? Read about the new diner generation and how Sherwood is positioning itself for the next 40 years.

Plus we have a summer gift guide, for host/hostess gifts or simply for yourself. Stay cool!

WHY DO SO MANY PEOPLE CHOOSE CINDY RANEY & TEAM TO SELL THEIR HOME?

Successful

Client Testimonial

After speaking to a number of real estate professionals, my wife and I decided to work with Cindy and her team because they had the best market insights and most credible marketing plan. They took the time to understand our objectives and really got to know the home leading to a flawless process and a better than expected outcome. We would certainly work with them again!

Our sellers received a great offer for their home right off the bat. No surprise - the house was perfectly maintained and our minor staging enhanced its best features. However, we continued marketing the property understanding that a deal isn’t final until signed. It was a good thing, because the first offer ended up falling apart. However, instead of having to go back to square one, we had a back up offer in hand to pursue. The best part? It was higher than the initial one.

Bathing Beauties

All American Custom Pools and Spas’ Exceptional Swim Spots

Imagine: a sultry summer evening. You and your friends are lounging on the built-in benches in your custom pool, sipping cold chardonnay from clever acrylic glasses. Your kids are throwing themselves into the shallow end - juuuust far enough away so the splashing water doesn’t ruin your wine.

Perhaps you have a waterfall element for ambiance and to further busy the offspring. Maybe a tanning ledge with a chaise or two thrown atop and a whirlpool…

The possibilities are as endless and as close to heaven as one may dare to dream.

We chose to dream big this summer: an allout glamorous dip aka Slim Aarons, or a provocative Blue Lagoon-esque watery sanctuary.

So we turned to the convivial folks at All American Custom Pools and Spas (AACPS) to give us the low-down on high-brow swim spots: AACPS co-owner William Osanitsch, his son-in-law and construction manager Adam Buehler, and his co-owner’s daughter and in-house marketing manager Mariah Keane.

We had a fun discussion about what people want with water, what’s new and

interesting in pools, and how the three of them work together as one, big, business-blended family.

Because AACPS specializes in indoor and outdoor pools, custom pools, and even renovations, it was tough to pare down all of the possibilities. So here are some highlights of what’s happening in pools:

• Trending now are “elegant and simple” pools for a practical reason: auto-covers. An auto-cover keeps debris out of the water and obviates the need for a fenced-in yard. However, it only works on rectangular pools.

• Whirlpools and tanning ledges (an elongated 12” deep shallow end). The shallow water is good for non-swimmers (kids) and can also be covered by an auto-cover.

• Not everyone wants simple: pools with rock elements and waterfalls are still popular, exciting, and smack of wilderness.

• Infinity pools are all the rage, but they’re expensive. “It costs almost as much as building two pools,” William warns.

• Diving boards? Not so much. According to William, “There are very specific construction code requirements for the pool base design,” not to mention safety concerns.

• Pool water is shifting from chlorine to salt which doesn’t require the harsh (and pricey) chemicals. Using salt results in water that feels softer on the skin.

• Don’t want salt water? UV Ozone systems are also gaining traction. They kill the reproductive ability of the bacteria and produce crisper, clearer water than chlorine.

• Use your imagination - few things are more fun in the summer than splashing around in the water, and a custom pool can be almost anything you want it to be (although waterslides are a bit pricey).

Important to note, AACPS also offers expert maintenance for its pools. This is good for two reasons: 1. If they build it, they’ll know it better than anyone; 2. Maintaining a pool is a lot of work and if you let it flag you’ll regret the clean-up required. Let them keep it clean and fresh so you can enjoy it. After all, that’s the whole point of having a fabulous pool!

ARTIST YVONNE CLAVELOUX PUTS HER PAINTINGS ON MORE THAN A CANVAS

It’s impossible to be somber in front of an Yvonne Claveloux canvas.

She paints boldly, often brightly, creating uplifting and transporting pieces as winsome as pink flamingos and popsicles.

Now she’s created a line of totes, towels, and more emblazoned with these images; a natural extension of her fashion and interior design background, and perfect for summer picnics and pool parties.

The Warm Tones plate.
40
The Cool Tones plate. That Outdoor Terrace plate.

THE

Growing up, Marissa Mullen was the family cheese-plater, an occupation she continued to pursue throughout college and career.

Ten years ago she began documenting her tasty marvels on @thatcheeseplate as a creative outlet. As luck would have it, The Rachel Ray Show spotted her Insta handle and went nuts over her cheesy creations. They invited her onto the show and, well, the crowd went wild.

This past May she came to The Post to sign her new book, That Cheese Plate, which outlines and explains her Cheese By Numbers methodology so even the most charcuterie-fearing host or hostess can fromage like a hero.

Here are some of her tips:

With each plate I curate, I use the Cheese By Numbers method to cover the five main flavor profiles: salty, sweet, bitter, sour, and umami. Follow the key to build the plate in order of number, clockwise from the top of the plate.

1—Cheese 2—Meat

Cheese: Cheese provides the most complex flavors to build upon. I always like to invest in high quality cheeses first. I usually feature three to five cheeses on my plates, which provides plenty of options for pairings. A variety of cheeses can consist of different milks (cow, goat, sheep, plantbased) and textures (hard, semi-hard, soft, fresh, bloomy).

Mother Charcuterie OF MODERN MARISSA MULLEN AND HER NEXT LEVEL CHEESE PLATES
3—Produce 4—Crunch 5—Dip 6—Garnish

Meat: I find that cured meats like salami, prosciutto, and soppressata, which are rich and savory, pair well with many cheeses, complementing the natural saltiness and fattiness.

You can also experiment with other flavor combinations, pairing cheese with meats like sausage, smoked salmon, and even grilled chicken!

Produce: Something like a briny cornichon will be able to cut through a rich cheese like a velvety raclette, while sweet, yet tangy raspberry will enhance the acidic lemon notes of a fresh goat cheese.

Crunch: I prefer simple salted crackers, since those with strong seasoning, such as garlic or onion, can overpower the flavor of the cheese. Nuts are a great addition as well, adding a fatty crunch to your bite, or acting as a smooth palate cleanser in between.

Dip: Adding something like honey or fig jam pairs wonderfully with many cheeses, making for a great contrast to the salty notes. Or if I’m in a savory mood, I play with the tangy elements on the plate, pairing a grainy mustard with an aged cheddar, for example.

Garnish: Fresh herbs and edible flowers can be the final beautiful detail on your cheese plate creation. For example, I’ll use fresh basil on a plate with mozzarella and tomato, or add some mint if I’m working with feta and fruit.

• Create a spread where your guests don't have to do any serious cutting or chopping on their own. To accomplish this, I like to always pre-cut my hard cheeses and fold any charcuterie on the plate.

• Stay away from sour candy. It sounds funny, but the amount of cheese boards I've seen on the internet with sour candy to make a "theme" for Easter or Halloween is alarming. The intensity of the sweet and sour candy completely drowns out the flavors of the cheese.

• Another mistake is garnishing the cheese plate with toxic flowers. Always make sure flower garnishes are edible, like violas, pansies, nasturtiums, borage, chamomile and marigolds.

(Editor’s note: Go to @thatcheeseplate for more ideas on creative flavor pairings, such as these with leftover Halloween candy:

“Manchego + Reese's Peanut Butter Cups: Have you ever tried peanut butter cheesecake? That’s essentially what happens when you add Reese's in the mix. The result is sweet, nutty, and creamy.

Brie + Candy Corn: Cow’s milk Brie is mild, nutty, and fruity. These blend together to make a creamy marshmallow flavor experience.

Blue Cheese + Twix:  Twix was the perfect solution to balance the blue, providing caramel to bring out the sweet notes, and chocolate to contrast the spice and kick.)”

Compo Beach Read

While selecting reads from the desultory bookshelves at Goodwill (cheaper than overdue fines), I stumbled upon The Last Mrs. Parrish . Coy title, breezy cover. This, I thought, will be a silly, fun beach read.

I was wrong; it’s fun, but not silly. It’s compelling, taut, smart, and - holy cow! - based in Westport. Though the town name in the book is Bishops Harbor, it was impossible to not recognize Beachside Avenue, with references to Norwalk, the Playhouse and more.

Sure enough, Lynne Constantine, who lived in Westport, with her sister, Valerie, penned the “domestic thriller which also

crosses into women’s fiction,” under the name “Liv Constantine.”

The idea came to them during a walk, while musing about women who “target married men in order to replace the existing wife/family.”

And that’s all I can write without giving away too much about this delicious story. Oh - and read it before the movie comes out. There’s no release date yet, but “the script is being finished by two very talented screenwriters. We are very eager to see it come to life on film.” As are so many others.

Liv Constantine: Lynne and Valerie

EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER 1:

Amber Patterson was tired of being invisible. She'd been coming to this gym every day for three months—three long months of watching these women of leisure working at the only thing they cared about. They were so self-absorbed; she would have bet her last dollar that not one of them would recognize her on the street even though she was five feet away from them every single day. She was a fixture to them—unimportant, not worthy of being noticed. But she didn't care—not about any of them. There was one reason and one reason alone that she dragged herself here every day, to this machine, at the precise stroke of eight.

She was sick to death of the routine—day after day, working her a** off, waiting for the moment to make her move. From the corner of her eye, she saw the signature gold Nikes step onto the machine next to her. Amber straightened her shoulders and pretended to be immersed in the magazine strategically placed on the rack of her own machine. She turned and gave the exquisite blond woman a shy smile, which garnered a polite nod in her direction. Amber reached for her water bottle, deliberately moving her foot to the edge of the machine, and slipped, knocking the magazine to the floor, where it landed beneath the pedal of her neighbor's equipment.

"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry," she said, reddening. Before she could step off, the woman stopped her pedaling and retrieved it for her. Amber watched the woman's brow knit together.

"You're reading this magazine?" the woman said, handing it back to her.

"Yes, it's the Cystic Fibrosis Trust's magazine. Comes out twice a year. Do you know it?"

"I do, yes. Are you in the medical field?" the woman asked.

Amber cast her eyes to the floor, then back at the woman. "No, I'm not. My younger sister had CF." She let the words sit in the space between them.

"I'm sorry. That was rude of me. It's none of my business," the woman said, and stepped back onto the elliptical.

Amber shook her head. "No, it's okay. Do you know someone with cystic fibrosis?"

There was pain in the woman's eyes as she stared back at Amber. "My sister. I lost her twenty years ago."

"I'm so sorry. How old was she?"

"Only sixteen. We were two years apart."

"Charlene was just fourteen." Slowing her pace, Amber wiped her eyes with the back of her hand.

It took a lot of acting skills to cry about a sister who never existed. The three sisters she did have were alive and well, although she hadn't spoken to them for two years.

The woman's machine ground to a halt. "Are you okay?" she asked.

Amber sniffed and shrugged. "It's still so hard, even after all these years."

The woman gave her a long look, as if trying to make a decision, then extended her hand.

"I'm Daphne Parrish. What do you say we get out of here and have a nice chat over a cup of coffee?"

"Are you sure? I don't want to interrupt your workout."

Daphne nodded. "Yes, I'd really like to talk with you."

“She was a fixture to them—unimportant, not worthy of being noticed. But she didn’t care—not about any of them. There was one reason and one reason alone that she dragged herself here every day, to this machine, at the precise stroke of eight.”

Amber gave her what she hoped looked like a grateful smile and stepped down. "That sounds great." Taking her hand, she said, "I'm Amber Patterson. Pleasure to meet you."

Later that evening Amber lay in a bubble bath, sipping a glass of merlot and staring at the photo in Entrepreneur magazine. Smiling, she put it down, closed her eyes, and rested her head on the edge of the tub. She was feeling very satisfied about how well things had gone that day. She'd been prepared for it to drag out even longer, but Daphne made it easy for her. After they dispensed with the small talk over coffee, they'd gotten down to the real reason she'd elicited Daphne's interest.

"It's impossible for someone who hasn't experienced CF to understand," Daphne said, her blue eyes alive with passion.

"Julie was never a burden to me, but in high school my friends were always pushing me to leave her behind, not let her tag along. They didn't understand that I never knew when she'd be hospitalized or if she'd even make it out again. Every moment was precious."

Amber leaned forward and did her best to look interested while she calculated the total worth of the diamonds on Daphne's ears, the tennis bracelet on her wrist, and the huge diamond on her tanned and perfectly manicured finger. She must have had at least a hundred grand walking around on her size-four body, and all she could do was whine about her sad childhood. Amber suppressed a yawn and gave Daphne a tight smile.

A Summer Can Change a Child’s Life

THE FRESH AIR FUND’S TRANSFORMATIVE OPPORTUNITIES

Where we live is remarkable! Beauty, opportunities, and adventure at our fingertips… especially in the summer!

A day spent squealing with delight (and perhaps some fear) while hunting crabs and gathering shells becomes a top priority. An ice cream alongside the Saugatuck River. Kayaks and paddle boards ready for a quick adventure at sea. The awe-inspiring landing of the great egret into the marshes. Climbing into bed still sticky from sunscreen that meant it when it said “waterproof.” Sand between the toes. Crickets and frogs; a cacophony filling the nighttime airways.

These are the childhood summertime moments that create a lifetime of memories and the belief that anything is possible. The world is full of beauty and adventure to seek out.

The Fresh Air Fund, founded in 1877, offers inner-city youth the opportunity to live with a volunteer host family in the suburbs or sleep away camps during the summer. The power of fun, new opportunities, and connections root a deep impact that can ripple through families and communities.

A not-for-profit youth development organization, over 1.8 million children from New York City’s underserved communities have benefitted from Fresh Air.

These children are exposed to the magic of a Fresh Air summer, one that is full of new experiences and new friends, simple yet transformative.

GIVING BACK | LIFE + CULTURE
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY FRESH AIR FUND

It’s also fair to say that the impact of these summers is equally transformative for the families that volunteer as host families (Friendly Towns Program). “It’s hard to understand the depth of what these meaningful relationships do for a youth, family, and anyone participating in it,” says CEO Lisa Gitelson. “Whenever someone creates a relationship that is meaningful and deep for them, it is all of us who benefit…it ripples out to make life better for you, for others around you, and for your community, town, city, and beyond. It’s not just impactful at the level of those participating, it is so much more than that.”

Stories of families connecting over generations because of the relationships built in a summer are full of joy. Adults who met as children, the host and the hosted, seeing each other as brothers and sisters decades later. Parents coming together to share in the joy of seeing a child reach their potential. Lives enriched because of the belonging forged between families.

Fairfield County is one of the largest areas in terms of host families in CT. Westport/Weston has around 25 families taking part in the Friendly Towns Program yearly. A number the Fresh Air Fund hopes will continue to grow (perhaps this article sparks an interest for you and your family?).

Volunteer host mom, Emma Halliwell, shares, “We have been taking part for seven years and always have the same child come to stay with us. I have two daughters and my oldest is the same age as our Fresh Air child Jasmin that stays with us. Everyone was nervous the first year, but Jasmin was lovely and the girls got along great. And now we have her cell and she has ours… she just texts us, ‘Hey, can I come in the summer,’ and then we go and pick her up and drop her back.”

The Fresh Air Fund is available to everyone involved throughout the experience. 24-7 social workers are on call and provide support.

“Our role is to support the relationships and connections being built.

“My advice, fill out the application and just do it. It’s not scary…you just have a great time.” - Emma Halliwell

We foster relationships before the child even goes to the home,” says Director of Friendly Towns for Fresh Air Fund Nicole Johnston.

“My advice,” continues Emma, “fill out the application and just do it. It’s not scary…you just have a great time.”

Here’s the good news Westport…it’s not too late to volunteer as a host family for this August! And if that

isn’t right for you, take a look at the many other ways you can support the Fresh Air Fund. Perhaps in the summers ahead we can welcome even more children to experience the fresh air of Westport!

The Real Storyand Stories - of the Levitt Pavilion

In the early 1970’s, Westport officials decided to replace a town dump on Jesup Green with an outdoor stage.

Summer residents and arts advocates Mortimer and Mimi Levitt donated $25,000 - over $150K in today’s money - to become the largest private donors to the initiative. To their surprise and delight, the town named the outdoor shell the Levitt Pavilion.

Before meeting Mimi, Mortimer had already amassed millions with a string of custom retail stores, The Custom Shop. According to Mimi, “[Mortimer] was quite a character, a real original. He never cared what other people did. He did things his way.” He also had a penchant for one-man shows and military bands. The Levitt board? Not so much.

While the Levitts went on to found The Levitt Foundation, providing free music to towns across the country, Westport’s Pavilion chose to focus on performing arts of all genres. Quietly and amicably, they cut ties with Mimi and Mortimer.

OUR TOWN | ARTS + CULTURE 58

In 1995, the Pavilion created the paid, full-time position of Executive Director for Freda Welsh, a former Board Chair and adviser since 1980. Freda is credited with making the Pavilion a preeminent outdoor performance site.

2008 saw a spectacular new Pavilion designed by Westport's Peter Cadoux. Of note, Freda threw the match on the old stage to initiate its demolition.

Today, Freda, with her daughter and assistant Carleigh, are the power behind the Levitt. Although Carleigh is quick to point out

they could never achieve what they do - an average of 50-60 nights of free access to the arts and 10 paid concerts and performances every summer - without an “incredible” board, professional technicians, seasonal staff, and volunteers. “I would never want it to seem like it’s just my mom and me,” she insists.

Throughout its 49 years, countless talent has rocked the stage: Meatloaf, Cyndi Lauper, Pat Benatar, Frankie Valli and, of course, Westporter Michael Bolton and Westoner José Feliciano.

And with great talent come great stories:

Willie Nelson and Special Guest

At the 1999 Gala, Willie Nelson was slamming the strings to a starstruck audience. Toward the end of the show, a man with a guitar clambered onto the stage. “You could see a wave of recognition ripple through the audience - row after row - and it was extra-special - kind of mind-blowing really,” exclaims Carleigh.

The man was Keith Richards, who explained to the audience he had always wanted to play with Willie, and was finally getting his chance.

(Carleigh’s note: “If you’re reading, Keith, it's time to visit the new Epstein Stage at the Levitt Pavilion and enjoy the views!”)

The Gipsy Kings

Flamenco guitarists The Gipsy Kings were “amazing and indefatigable.”

Before the show, guests enjoyed a dinner and “lots of wine” donated by a local restaurant. Suddenly, the Kings burst in and delighted the diners and eatery owners with a special performance.

Then they went on to perform a “sensational” fulllength show in the Pavilion, though Mortimer infamously insisted that concert-goers sit down and stop dancing so they wouldn’t ruin the grass.

Jesse Terry

In 2014, a scheduled artist was unable to make an appearance due to flight delays. Scurrying to find a replacement, they were able to book singer-songwriter and grand prize winner of the 2007 John Lennon Songwriting contest, Jesse Terry. Solo, he took the stage beneath a striking full moon and enraptured the audience. He recently published a children’s book, If I Were the Moon, based on one of his most requested songs. Says Carleigh, “We’d like to think our full moon show was part of the inspiration.”

The Beach Boys

Before the Pavilion was updated in 2014, the old pavilion lawn was notorious for becoming a mud bath following heavy rain.

In July 2000, The Beach Boys pulled up in their tour bus after one such deluge. Their manager poked out his head, surveyed the expansive mud, exclaimed “What the $@&!?,” and told the Boys to stay on the bus; they were clearly in the wrong place.

They weren’t, obviously, and eventually got off the bus to rock a spectacular show, and came back five years later for another sold-out performance.

Rhiannon Giddens

For Rhiannon - folk musician, MacArthur “Genius” grant recipient, Grammy winner, co-founder of supergroup Our Native Daughters, and most recently Pulitzer Prize winner - our Pavilion was the first stop on her inaugural tour in 2019. As such, it’s featured in a documentary on the Smithsonian Channel. ParamountPlus.com

Little Richard and Chuck Berry

The 2002 Gala’s stars were Little Richard and Chuck Berry. Throughout their careers they maintained a friendly rivalry, each claiming to be the “real” founder of rock n’roll.

Little Richard played first. And played. And played. Freda finally had to assure Chuck that his frenemy would wrap soon. Eventually, Little Richard stopped and gave Chuck the stage, but folks contend that his extra-long set was “perhaps on purpose.”

Right now, Levitt Pavilion is in the thick of its free programming and concerts, including: three-time Grammy winner (including “Best New Artist”) singer-songwriter Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers (July 1), Twiddle, “Known for jaw-dropping live performances, the group has repeatedly sold out some of the most legendary venues in the world” (July 21 and 22), and Billboard Chart hitmaker and rockstar Daryl Hall, heralded as one of the "best soul-singers of his generation” (August 24).

SHERWOOD DINER GETS AN OVERHAUL

DINER, FINER

Everyone loves Sherwood Diner.

For 49 years, 901 Post Road East has been the melting pot of Westport. High school teams descend en masse after games, leaving hundreds of dirty plates in their wake. Young families manipulate toddlers into high chairs and stow infants in car seats on the windowsills. Festooned patrons of the now-shuttered Cedar Brook Café heel-teetered to the diner for sustenance after late-night revelries. Hungry truck drivers, sweaty fitness instructors. There’s hardly a type the diner doesn’t attract.

Like many diners, Sherwood was built offsite and trucked to its location in 1977 (diner “experts” prefer these prefab units). Now, like many diners, Sherwood is seeing a generational shift in management. In 2020, a month before Covid, Vasili Tziolis (Staples ‘12), became general manager. The son of co-owner Zenny, Vasili spent his pandemic downtime sprucing up the digs with his father and his father’s partner Dmitri Alatakis.

General Manager Vasili Tziolis

Zenny and his wife emigrated to America when opportunities were scarce for Greek immigrants. However, the diner business was booming. Why? An influx of earlier Greek immigrants had found work in restaurants and, after years of saving their money, started eateries of their own.

An NYT article states, "about two-thirds of New York City's diners are Greek-owned.” This proliferation of Greek diners created industry, information, and opportunity for their community.

It also created enormous menus. With fast food booming since the ‘50s - McDonald’s, Howard Johnson - the diner industry instructed owners to fight back with more and more comfort food. Zenny’s new business saw the hey-day of these manifold menus, packed with quintessential American and Greek dishes.

“It was fear of missing out,” explains Vasili. “There was a perceived disadvantage if you didn't have something someone else carries.” He points out that most menu items were variations on a theme, “taking an item and replicating it 20 different ways.”

Like the menus, the decor was more and more and more: pie cases, ornate light fixtures, Acropolis-inspired columns, even large fish tanks. Now, Sherwood hardly bedecked to this degree, but it’s impossible to not notice the streamlined changes.

To get a “clean, modern vibe,” they got rid of the large light fixtures to open up the ceiling and trimmed the columns. They added

“THERE WAS A PERCEIVED DISADVANTAGE IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE SOMETHING SOMEONE ELSE CARRIES.”

tiles to the seating counter and removed the pie case and milk and coffee machines.

For the menu, they decided to focus on fresh fare made really well. Which meant nixing the frozen items, tossing out mixes, and ditching dishes like chicken marsala and stir fry which “created complexity that we don’t specialize in.” Oh, and getting rid of liver and onions due to its limited appeal.

Now they focus on “omelettes, pancakes, clubs, and salads.” The most popular items? Scrambled eggs, grilled cheese, and burgers.

A word about the burgers: diners have always raved about them and it, too, has enjoyed a renaissance. It’s 8 ounces, large for a diner, and what Vasili describes as a “value sandwich.” They upgraded the bun and created a “house seasoning” which Vasili describes as “salt, pepper, garlic salt, onion… you know, simple seasonings -” I interrupt, “Did you come up with this?” He modestly smiles and admits, “Yeah… I do the R&D.”

His research has yielded house-made buttermilk pancakes with real buttermilk, chicken cutlets breaded to order and, my favorite, a “Pancake Flight” which showcases three of their most popular flapjacks.

He’s currently developing a line of fresh-squeezed mimosas, to showcase their new full bar.

The result is a diner poised for the next 40 years, dishing up great meals as always. And you can enjoy it all with a cocktail.

NOW THEY FOCUS ON “OMELETTES, PANCAKES, CLUBS, AND SALAD.”

Here Comes the Sun

Dr. Annette Czernik Advises How to Prevent and Treat Sun Damage

SKIN CARE | HEALTH + WELLNESS

With a patient. (Photo: Michael Graham)

Admit it: You’ve worshipped the sun.

Whether you’ve spent a day sprawled on a chaise by the pool or just lifted your face in the warmth of the noontime beams during your lunch break, you’ve tempted fate for that ‘healthy glow.’

“There’s a chemical reaction going on when you’re in the sunshine. It releases dopamine in the brain and the more you do it, the more you want to do it,” says Annette Czernik, M.D., FAAD, principal dermatologist at DermMedical in Wilton.

And, while a little innocent sunbathing might have improved everything from your acne and eczema to your blue mood and sleep patterns, it also probably did a number on your skin. That bright yellow star we revolve around produces dangerous sun damage, the umbrella term for signs of photoaging and freckling as well as simple and more serious skin cancers and precancerous lesions or actinic keratosis.

Sunlight travels as both visible and invisible rays or waves. Longer waves are harmless to humans, but too much exposure to the shorter ones, such as ultraviolet light (UVA and UVB rays), can upset the processes in your skin cells, affecting skin’s growth and appearance. In essence, they make skin less elastic and, over time, it can become wrinkled, leathery and both thickened and thinned.

The peeling of a sunburn repairs the outer layers, but DNA damage can cause changes in cells that make them rapidly grow and divide, possibly leading to both cancerous and benign tumors.

Each year, more than two million people are treated for basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma, according to the National Institutes of Health. A more serious type, melanoma, is diagnosed in more than 68,000 Americans each year.

Dr. Czernik, a board-certified dermatologist and three-time Mt. Sinai Teacher of the Year, says she’s

seen an uptick in potentially life-threatening melanomas this year, as those who put off doctor’s visits during the pandemic come back for their annual fullbody skin checks.

“There’s been a delay in health care during the pandemic,” she notes, “and with melanoma, early detection is important.”

There is some good news: While those in their teens and 20s might still love the look of a summertime tan, most patients she sees know how to combat the sun’s dangerous rays.

“You can tell how old people are by seeing who’s photo-protecting,” says Dr. Czernik, who practiced in New York City for about a decade, earning NY SuperDoctor honors three times.

These days, protection includes a full checklist before heading out for a day of fun in the sun. Dr. Czernik encourages her patients to start their skin routine with an application of antioxidant serum rich in vitamins C and E and ferulic acid. Allow that to soak into the skin and then apply a good-quality sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

While there are some sunscreen brands that include added vitamins, Dr. Czernik says several powerful antioxidants are not stable, such as vitamin C, and don’t incorporate easily into sunscreen. She recommends applying them separately.

“It gives an extra photoprotective boost that complements the action of the sunscreen,” she advises.

In addition, she encourages her sports and gardening-loving patients to ditch the baseball caps and straw sun hats and opt for broad-brimmed varieties, especially those made of material tested for UV protection. Speaking of which, she’s a fan of long sleeve swimsuits and other sun-protecting fashions at the beach or club. And children will benefit from frequent sunscreen re-application, especially around exposed face, ears and hands.

“There’s a chemical reaction going on when you’re in the sunshine. It releases dopamine in the brain and the more you do it, the more you want to do it.”

Watch the clock, too, as the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. What if your youngster doesn’t know how to tell time?

“I say look at your shadow,” Dr. Czernik says. “If it’s smaller than you, seek shade.”

Once the damage is done, a dermatologist can recommend if specific products and treatments might be beneficial in slowing the aging clock.

A topical chemotherapeutic cream, such as 5-fluorouracil can treat the rough patches typical of precancerous lesions or actinic keratosis. Patients can speak with their dermatologist about in-office treatments, such as liquid nitrogen, photodynamic therapy and chemical peels or

Fraxel laser. Post-treatment tretinoin cream can help reduce the recurrence of actinic keratosis, which is often found on the face, scalp and back of the hands.

The latter two treatments, as well as intense pulse light (IPL), can help with sunspots and other evidence of photoaging, Dr. Czernik suggests.

As a mother and a doctor, the Fairfield County native believes families should be diligent, but also take a reasonable attitude when it comes to sun skincare. The new powdered form of sunscreen is a godsend for protecting the scalp and keeping squirmy kids safe at the beach, for example.

“You cannot and should not entirely avoid the sun. I say, do your best,” she says.

It’s outdoor season! We asked DiscoverWestportCT.com, Westport’s go-to resource, to pick some of the best places to simply sit and see.
“Points” of Views

1. Compo Pavilion. Compo Beach’s pavilion view is a perfect summer visual; the Long Island Sound, combined with the sand and Cedar Point rocks, make for a relaxing vacation-like feeling.

2. Church Lane. A perfect summer evening is the best time to watch the outdoor bustle, when restaurants spill into the street and everyone’s ready for a fun night out.

3. Parker Harding Plaza The shores of the Saugatuck River offer many soothing visuals. Our favorite? Parker Harding Plaza where you can grab a coffee and enjoy the river from one of the benches.

4. The Hunt Club. Looking in, the Hunt Club’s equestrian-centric aesthetic boasts the ambiance of a private, historical club. Looking out, the endless field of green grass is maintained for activities throughout the summer.

5. Wakeman Town Farm. Rich with the flora and fauna of a New England farm, Wakeman Town Farm is rife with nature views. With the summer being the busiest time of year, this location is also filled with activities for the whole family.

6. Mahackeno Woods. There’s a reason this outdoor center is perfect for summer camps. Canoes by the river, wooded hiking paths, small bridges, a basketball court, all surrounded by fully grown trees. The Mahackeno Woods is a gorgeous display of mother nature - and don’t miss the recently developed outdoor pool area.

7. Levitt Pavilion. A Westport treasure, there’s a reason why the Levitt Pavilion is a fan favorite of Westport Lifestyle. For the next concert or show, grab a spot early for the best views of the stage.

8. Farmers Market. Soak in the energy and vibrant color of Westport’s famous market. Vendors bring you the best of what’s local, from comfort foods to funky and fresh cheeses, exquisite meats, blooming flowers, and herbs for your garden.

9. Old Mill. Enjoy an afternoon taking in the passing boats and the spectacular horizon. This particular sand-covered coast is hidden away from the downtown area, giving you the quiet headspace to enjoy your surroundings.

Winslow Park. Love dogs? So do we! And we have the perfect place to bring your four-legged friends and watch them have the time of their lives. Situated in the middle of town, this park is always full-of-life with dog walkers, Gabriele’s patrons, and Playhouse audience members.
