January is a wonderful yet challenging month. On one hand, this month gifts us a fresh start to the New Year (Healthy Eating! Fitness!). On the other hand, this fresh start may be tough to tackle (healthy eating… fitness…)
We totally get it. So this month we focus on the positives of wellness, the benefits of rejuvenating your body, and some fun fashion in your journey.
Health is about mind and body. Let’s start with our annual journey through a dietary detox/cleanse with Organic Krush, then you can read up on local trainer, Anne Epstein. Did you know about the athletic wear collaboration with artist Yvonne Claveloux and Club Sweat? You can look good while you sweat!
Thinking dry January and sober-positive? Read about some spectacular new anti-alcohol cocktail alternatives. And - not a festive topic but a necessary one - learn about Recovery Community Development’s sober homes, which have bettered the lives of so many people, including those around you.
Wellness is also about mental health, and kindness is a key part of everyone’s wellbeing. With Connections, Staples is teaching our teens the importance of being good to others which, in turns, helps elevate their own happiness and self-esteem.
Our town’s new website, DiscoverWestportCT.com, includes all of the exercise and sports spots in town, as well as almost everything else (champagne, restaurants, party dresses…).
Happy New Year!

Whether you’re going alcohol-free for the month (dry January, anyone?), moment, night or more, you don’t have to drink fewer cocktails to drink less alcohol. Many folks are choosing sober lifestyles for a myriad of reasons. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorite booze-free brands to keep your New Year spirited, but without the hard stuff.
This non-alcoholic beverage was inspired by Mediterranean aperitivo culture and created by Melanie Masarin. Melanie, formerly of Glossier, wanted to change the way we think about drinking and socializing. During quarantine she launched Ghia with their first product, The Aperitif, in June of 2020.
The Aperitif boasts a flavor both bright and bitter with hints of citrus and florals. The formula includes health-forward ingredients such as Gentian Root, Lemon Balm, Fig, Elderflower, with no added sugar.
Recently, Ghia introduced single serve cans of Le Spritz which are available in three flavors: Ghia Soda, Ghia Ginger, and Lime & Saltgreat options if you’re bringing your own beverages to the party. It’s the first non-alcoholic beverage to win Esquire’s “Drink of the Year’ and, if you ask us, it wins the award for best packaging. It’ll look great on your counter or bar cart.
Matthew Jukes, wine writer and wine taster for over 35 years, knows wine. With over 8 million readers a week, he is the UK’s most keenly followed wine journalist. So you know when he set out to make his own alcohol-free wine, it would be for the most discerning of palates.
Jukes is apple cider vinegar-based made with the finest quality of fruits, vegetables, and spices. You can choose between their canned, ready-to-drink sparkling wine or their individual glasses of The Red, The White, or The Rosé which come in perfectly packed, small bottles. Said bottles come precisely aligned in a gorgeous box which screams “luxury!” and their website provides a fabulous list of recipes that pair effortlessly with their different varietals.
Jukes is also vegan, gluten-free, and halal.
If it’s bubbles you love, TÖST is for you. I was first introduced to TÖST while celebrating a birthday of a friend who was expecting a baby. When she offered me her flute to taste, I was blown away by how delicious booze-free bubbles can be.
Their namesake bubbly is an all-natural blend of white tea, white cranberry, and ginger. Their TÖST Rosé is a delightful blend of white tea, ginger, and elderberry.
TÖST was created so everyone can commemorate their moments, big or small, positively and inclusively and is a must-have for celebrations (or, you know, just a regular Wednesday).

A fun, margarita-filled Friday night can often lead to a slow Saturday morning. But with Ritual Zero Proof, you drink a choice of expertly brewed and alcohol-free tequila, whisky, rum, and gin.
Ritual was created to be an “and” not an “or.” I was surprised by how distinctly delicious these spirits taste. Bonus - the cocktail recipes on their website will make you feel like an expert mixologist in no time.
What if a cocktail could make you happier and healthier? A question Free Spirits asked themselves when creating their non-alcoholic spirits.
To simulate the relaxing feeling of a boozy cocktail, they infuse each of their products with vitamins B3, B6, and aminos our bodies naturally produce, like taurine, which helps lift your overall mood.
Their products - Spirit of Gin, Spirit of Milano, Spirit of Tequila, and Spirit of Bourbon - are beautifully bottled and offered in bundles so you can try them all.

“Leisure Soda” may be an unfamiliar term to you and I but not to Casamara Club founder, Jason LaValla, who coined the term. “Leisure Sodas” are delectable amaro-based potions with real botanical extracts instead of liquor.
The four flavors: Alta, Onda, Como, Sera, are meant to be a transportive experience, reminding you of enjoyable nights, meals, or moments. And their website sign-off is “in leisure” which is the mentality we should all take into this new year!

Target and Lilly Pulitzer, Vineyard Vines and Crocs, Uber and Spotify. Is there anything as exciting as when two brands you love join forces and all of a sudden have an amazing product that you absolutely can’t live without? Athletic apparel is more functional than fun, so adding a designer to the mix, who makes leggings and wicking-fabric apparel more than mono-tonal, adds a bit of glamour to one’s sweat session.
Yvonne Claveloux, a primarily self-trained artist who grew up in Westport, is teaming up with CLUBSWEAT, a boutique fitness studio specializing in elliptical workouts and owned by Laura Sabia, to offer athletic apparel inspired by the CLUBSWEAT logo.
Yvonne’s bright, energetic work compliments the fun cardio routines. Both the studio and the athletic wear are unique, and having both of them local makes the collaboration even more special.
We caught up with both of them to learn more.
Yvonne Claveloux (YC): Colorful, Creative and Joyful Laura Sabia (LS): Fun, Energizing, Community-oriented
“My artwork for CLUBSWEAT was inspired by their logo, which is a drop of sweat. I used my style of different shapes and stripes along with CLUBSWEAT’s blue and gray tones to bring their brand to life in a creative and artistic way.”

YC: I love the freedom and flexibility of being a business owner, and it's so satisfying to see my work bring joy to my clients' lives.
LS: It allows me to be a workaholic by choice but also make a real difference in people's lives. We have built such a large team and each person's contributions to the studios and the community make a difference in creating a healthier community for everyone that comes through our studio doors.
YC: Every day is different for me, but generally includes activities such as deliveries to and discussions with galleries, photo shoots for art and products, meetings with clients for commissions, planning my content for social media and preparing for exhibitions. Since my days can become busy quickly, I like to start very early in my studio. I enjoy the quiet and creative time, and it allows me to focus on my artwork with no distractions.
LS: I have to delegate. There are only so many hours in the day and prioritizing tasks and having strong time management has become a necessary evil. I would love nothing more than to be the point person on every project and be at every milestone celebration but it becomes impossible when you have to make sure that everything is running like a well-oiled machine.
YC: To me, community means a feeling of belonging. It is about relationships with individuals that collectively can make a change or care for each other. My husband and I both grew up in Westport and we raised our two daughters here, so our roots are deep and we feel very fortunate to be part of the fabric of our town. I also really love to give back by supporting local organizations through the donation of my artwork.
LS: When people form connections due to having a similar interest and form friendships based on that shared interest. With fitness, this can be when people are working towards a common goal. I love that our studios have formed friendships outside of our studio walls and helped to create a healthy space for people to live happier lives because they feel good about themselves. Westport is such a special place to me since I opened my first business here in 2013. The community made me feel welcomed with open arms and we have been able to organically grow based on the ever changing needs of our clients.
YC: My artwork for CLUBSWEAT was inspired by their logo, which is a drop of sweat. I used my style of different shapes and stripes along with CLUBSWEAT's blue and gray tones to bring their brand to life in a creative and artistic way.
YC: I am excited about some upcoming projects and collaborations that will feature my artwork on more products!
LS: Absolutely! Aside from the painting in the lobby, Yvonne developed a custom yoga mat that has our branding with Yvonne's artwork. We also have a cropped sports bra with her art and water bottles as well. We are working with some great athleisure brands and at-home products to deliver our livestream and on demand services more seamlessly to stream right into people's living rooms. More to come in 2023!

Passion Jobs: Personal Trainer, Equinox Darien + Mother of 3 boys
Goal: To provide a curated fitness experience for each of my clients

New Year’s Resolution: To surpass my personal fitness records
I’ve been an athlete my entire life—from starting ballet and gymnastics at three years old through my teens to basketball, volleyball, softball, and skiing in middle school and high school. I also played lacrosse and snowboarded while in college. As an adult, I love running, tennis, weight training, CrossFit and, currently, body building. I find freedom in exercise; I feel at peace with myself and my thoughts. For me, working out is a judgment free zone, where I derive power from the fact that are no rules or boundaries.
During the past five years, I’ve shifted my focus from being the skinniest version of myself to sculpting my muscles at the elite level of a true athlete. Instead of concentrating on cardio as my main exercise, I lift heavy weights and eat enough protein to repair and build lean muscle mass. As a rule, I consume one gram of protein per pound of body weight. Due to a major back injury, which resulted in surgery in 2014, I’ve figured out how my body moves through space in everyday life. This motivated me to start body building and, ultimately, to earn my Personal Training Certification through an organization called National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). With this accreditation under my belt, my
mission is to help other people meet their fitness goals in the safest and smartest way possible, while enjoying the journey.
YOU SPENT MANY YEARS ENSCONCED IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO CHANGE YOUR CAREER PATH AND TURN A DEDICATED HOBBY INTO A PROFESSION AS A PERSONAL TRAINER?
Fashion has always been and will always be a passion of mine, which means it will continue be part of my brand. However, physical fitness is my first true love. When the opportunity to center my career around this industry became a reality, I never looked back. I’m one hundred percent invested in devoting myself to my clients full time.
YOU’RE KNOWN FOR WEARING THE MOST STYLISH ACTIVEWEAR. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE BRANDS? AND WHAT’S YOUR “UNIFORM” WHEN YOU HIT THE GYM?
I’m a huge fan of a “playsuit,” also known asa onesie/unitard/bodysuit/catsuit, which I consider to be part of my “uniform.” I love subtle color connectors within outfits, and I’m all about doing things in threes, as it’s my favorite number. For example, I like the color of the glitter on the back of my Golden Goose sneakers to tie in with an accent color in my workout outfit, which also happens to be a color of a charm on my necklace. A few brands I’m obsessed with are: THE UPSIDE, Ultracor, P.E. Nation, and Off-White. I’m also a fan of Spiritual Gangster and FREECITY for less intense workout days with a full-fashion vibe. Two newbies on the scene that are piquing my interest are Live The Process and Le Ore. I’m a firm believer that the clothing we wear impacts the way we feel and even our behavior. When you feel good, your mindset shifts to a place where self-care becomes more important to you. There’s actually a term for how clothing influences an individual’s psychological processes, which is “Enclothed Cognition.”
ARTICLE BY EMILY LIEBERTYOUR APPROACH TO HEALTH AND WELLNESS IS VERY THOROUGH. CAN YOU SHARE YOUR VISION FOR TRAINING PEOPLE WHO ARE LOOKING TO IMPROVE IN THESE AREAS?
One of my mottos is: Everything matters! When working with clients, I take into consideration their goals or problems they want to solve, their past injuries, their diet, and what kinds of movements are most natural for them.
Music takes me to another level when I’m training. I relive memories and celebrate or mourn them while sweating out the toxins. It’s therapy. Music gives me hope—for a new day, for a future opportunity, or for an exciting business venture that’s waiting to bloom. I’ve poured my heart and soul into playlists and crafted them on Spotify.
WHAT’S YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO STAY IN SHAPE BUT DON’T HAVE HOURS TO DEVOTE TO WORKING OUT?
Healthy habits are your building blocks. Even if you don’t feel like hitting the gym on any given day, try to push yourself to show up and start with 20 minutes of walking or stretching.
Form is key. For example, people often make the mistake of using heavier weights to “get a good workout” when they haven’t been trained properly. This will inevitably lead to injury. Certainly, in the beginning stages of weight training, consult a professional who can guide you in your pursuits.
I do follow a very specific diet. First and foremost, I shun fast foods, processed foods, and even certain protein bars which are marketed as healthy, but actually contain ingredients that are not good for you. I believe food is fuel, and I’m currently laser focused on protein consumption to build lean muscle mass. Your body can utilize 30-50 grams of protein per meal. Anything beyond that goes to waste.I also view nuts as vitamins, and I take nine per day—three walnuts, three Brazil nuts, and three raw almonds.
Breakfast
• 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder in my coffee = 20g protein
• 2 full eggs and 4 egg whites with spinach and tomatoes = 24g protein Lunch
• Salad with 6 ounces of grilled chicken = 24g protein Snack
• Blueberries and 6 grilled shrimp = 24g protein Dinner
• 1 small sweet potato or rice, broccoli, and 4 ounces salmon = 16g protein
Dessert
• Fairlife chocolate milk = 42g protein
My expertise is in body building, and my knowledge lends itself to helping clients incorporate strength training into their current routine. As I mentioned, every person is different, so a customized regimen is essential. With this said, cardio is important for heart health. If you’re
looking to lose a lot of weight, say 30+ pounds, your cardio should be in a Zone 2 range, which will work out your heart and burn fat, but won’t eat away at your muscle. My suggestion is using the treadmill five days a week for 30 minutes at an incline of 12 and a 3.0 pace.
WOULD
I’m a serial entrepreneur and a creator at heart, so the answer is YES! There’s a lot in store for the future of my brand in regards to clean, healthy living coupled with my fashion forward sensibility, which is ingrained in sustainability. Stay tuned…

Kindness connects.
“Our recent systematic review and meta-analysis of the psychological effects of kindness revealed that performing acts of kindness boosts happiness and well-being.” National Library of Medicine
Staples High School is one of the most celebrated high schools in America. It’s also one of the toughest.
The pressure to succeed, to score an A, a goal, a starring role, is incessant.
But how often do we truly encourage ourselves and others to “succeed” at kindness? Judging by some of the stories swirling around Westport, it’s oftentimes as hard to learn as any other subject. While some students thrive, some don’t. While some students are revered, celebrated, and championed, others are bullied, teased, and rejected.
Which is why Staples Principal Stafford Thomas wants to stop, or at least diminish, the marginalization, prejudice, and unkind behavior in the social microcosm of our high school.
I first spoke to Stafford about this goal two years ago, when he was one of our Men of Westport. He created a class, Connections, “to get everyone to understand and behave in ways which actively promote inclusivity… The first step is the understanding of our expectations for how we treat each other, and it can’t be done through an assembly.”
“We want to build a community so students know Staples as more than their circle of friends and assistance with college,” says Stafford.
With co-advisors Natalie Odierna and Nell-Ayn Lynch (both social studies teachers), they created - and continue to create - an impressive curriculum
that includes games, videos, and interactive discussions.
There are 160 groups of 10-12 students (the “sweet spot for an advisory group”) that meet every Tuesday and Thursday to focus on being nice people. Smaller groups “make school feel smaller, and allows students to meet others who may not otherwise cross paths,” explains Natalie.
This ice-breaker asks each student to think about something that interests them, and then instruct fellow students how to do it in two minutes. They may “teach" how to make a vinaigrette, or how to clean up their rooms (I admit, I added that myself). This lesson also helps build confidence and public speaking skills.
To kick off homecoming week, the discussion revolved around how Staples “…shows pride in ourselves, one another, our teachers, administrators, and community.”
Topics included:
1. What does “pride” mean to you?
2. What does pride look like in Staples High School?
3. How can you display pride in yourselves and your peers?
In addition, each class was asked to write a Wrecker’s pride slogan and the winning class received free tickets to the homecoming game.*
Future lessons will focus on gratitude, including writing a thank you note.
While teachers and advisors have autonomy in how they approach each weekly lesson, Stafford writes a monthly lesson, a “blue sheet” taught to every class on the same day.
A bit of backstory: In 2019, the Staples football field was being redone so the home games were moved to Norwalk High School.
The Wreckers trounced New Canaan (yay!) and students celebrated by
“We want to build a community so students know Staples as more than their circle of friends and assistance with college.”
tossing blue powder onto everything. Fun for the students, not so much for those who painstakingly power-washed the stains off the bleachers.
Thus, the first “blue sheet,” named for - can you guess? - the mysterious blue powder.
The incident dovetailed nicely into that month’s lesson. It was Stafford’s first year at Staples and he heard a number of unnerving rumblings about lousy behavior at past homecoming games. Having implemented Connections that September, he hoped the students wouldn’t make similar poor choices.
Happily, the night was amazing. Except for the blue powder: throwing powder all over another’s property is selfish, now matter how celebratory the moment.
So that month’s topic - respect and community.
Discussion topics included:
• What does having a community mean?
• Describe what the Staples community looks like to you.
• How do you feel and what do you think of when someone expresses gratitude towards you?
(Clearly, homecoming’s a busy week.)
Then there’s the Holiday Bear Program which some classes opt into. Late October, I received an email from Staples math teacher Kevin Cuccaro, my daughter’s Connections/Advisory teacher. He explained that their group decided to “adopt” a young boy from Danbury for the holidays, providing him with necessities and gifts that he would otherwise not receive.
Then he wrote, beautifully summing up the program “We have spent a lot of time discussing respect, gratitude, and pride… we will wrap the gifts and enjoy the time together as we celebrate what it feels like to help others.”
An important lesson for everyone.
If teaching teens altruism and respect is the macro-side of Connections, the micro-side is simply connecting.
Both Natalie and Nell’s classes graduated last year. Natalie says, “I [was so] upset to lose them. They’re brilliant, kind people.”
Nell remarks, “I wasn’t able to go to the graduation because my own daughter was graduating…” - so her students sent her a photo in their caps and gowns, We miss you! It’s not the same without you! - “…that’s what brought me to tears.”
In a video, Nell asks her students to offer advice to future students: “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” “Don’t walk down the middle of the hallway.”
And perhaps the greatest advice, “Embrace your time.”
Class dismissed.
*Staples always bleedin’ blue, we got that pride strong and true.
I just spent 15 minutes in a calling cue. For the third time. For a leased car I returned two months ago. When someone finally answered, they couldn’t help me and put me on hold. For the third time. It was so much fun that I hung up, scoured the internet for the CFO’s email and, well, I finally have a response to my query.
Yeah. Not a big fan of long waits and no resolution.
The thing is: Yes, business websites put information at one’s fingertips. The issue is: getting information one actually needs requires battling through the 10th circle of inferno - Corporate Hell.
Which may be why I’m so delighted with Discover Westport(DW).
I know it’s tough to get jazzed up about a town website (sorry, Town. But on some level you must be aware of this.) I mustered a resounding “meh” when I first heard about DW.
Then I logged on.
And maybe because I’m hardened to all sites “helpful” or because I’m railing against everything in general, I was taken aback by how, like, helpful it is.
First, it’s clean and easy to navigate. No bolded words crammed against call-outs and exclamation points and odd/misleading subject titles.
Second, it’s comprehensive. You want to learn about sports and fitness? One click leads to every conceivable spot in which to burn a calorie, stretch a muscle, and get your game on. Hungry for a snack? You can quickly find the tiniest chocolate shop or the biggest grocery store. I also learned there are a lot of liquor stores in Westport…
Third, everything you need is right there: address, website, phone number. There’s even a photo so you know what to expect, and a map so you can determine how far you’ll have to walk/drive to get there.
You can read up on our neighborhoods, find town-wide happenings on the calendar, even learn a bit about Westport itself (did you know that Stepford Wives was filmed here?)
Work on DW began last year, when branding and marketing executive Randy Herbertson (Principal, The Visual Brand)
and Sarah Harris (then the town operations director) struck up a conversation about creating a town site. Norwalk has one, Stamford has one, so why not one for our attractive beach-side enclave?
Then his team scoured the town, collected and compiled data. Initially, they focused on parks, non-profits, and “anything with a storefront.” However, Randy explains, “Every time we draw the line it gets crossed.”
It launched this past October, but it’s still in development. They anticipate a blog, lists as varied as “10 Things to Discover,” and “10 Great Pickles.” Even making dinner reservations
You can read up on our neighborhoods, find town-wide happenings on the calendar, even learn a bit about Westport itself (did you know that Stepford Wives was filmed here?)
online (“If the restaurant’s not on OpenTable, how are you going to find them?” asks Randy.)
They’re open to suggestions, so apprise them of your brilliant ideas. They may or may not be able to accommodate your sparks of creative genius, but they won’t put you on hold forever. Three times.

This year, I’m doing a detox with Organic Krush (OK): three days of juice with a small, vegan snack, then three days of vegan “detox” meals.
I cleanse/detox once a year to re-ignite my focus on nutrition, as my good eating habits tend to de-escalate to embarrassing levels. Though I try to maintain a healthy diet, no number of organic chocolate chip cookies will replace a salad.
My goal isn’t to lose weight (any weight lost from juicing promptly packs itself back on within days). Rather, I re-boot to increase my energy and lift my spirits.
And if it makes my skin glow and my hair shiny and thick (Yes? Please?) then, shoot, I’m fine with that.
OK makes three days’ worth of juices on the first morning, to be picked up all at once. 18 bottles. Which is different from any other detoxes I’ve done (typically
I have to pick up the day’s bottles each morning), but convenient.
I have my choice of snacks, including: Kale Detox salad, Roasted Vegetable salad, Seasonal Soup (butternut squash/apple), or trail mix (sunflower seeds, gobi berries, and that ilk.) I chose the salads and soup.
Like most detoxes, there’s a schedule for when to drink each juice and eat the snack. Green juices, considered the most nutrient-rich, are consumed in the morning on an empty stomach. This enables all the healthy stuff to be absorbed efficiently, without having to navigate a tummy full of edibles.
Fun fact: the body uses up to 70% of its energy processing solid food. Eliminating solids allows the body to soak in more nutrients while re-directing the energy to other activities.
Back to the cleanse. You may be the type to savor and sip a green juice, but I like to hammer mine down and let the vitamins
and minerals wash over me like a tidal wave. I don’t cleanse to thrill my tastebuds.
Regarding the salad - baby spinach with roasted zucchini and butternut squash - I munched on that bad boy all day (tiny little bites) to alleviate my cravings for fork-able sustenance. Though I’m “supposed” to eat it around dinner time, I placed my sanity before sacrifice. Turns out, it was a good move because being ever-so-slightly sated helped me to not scream at every living being in my home.
Pretty much the same thing as Day 1. I remained grateful for the snacks (today, Kale Detox salad).
This morning I took my daughter to get a bacon, egg, and cheese on a bagel, a decision I immediately regretted. I chugged a green juice to assuage my feelings of envy and resentment. It did nothing but make me less thirsty.
Of note, the Cashew Mylk drink scheduled for the end of the day provides much-needed healthy fat and 7 grams of protein. Plus it’s super yummy. Throw in some ice and vodka and you’ve got a delicious cocktail! Or not. Because we’re cleansing #@%$.
DAY 3:
Now I’m feeling energetic and happy; the magic is happening!
But not without its challenges.
I’ve done enough cleanses to know that hunger pangs are temporary, so grit your teeth and ride them out. To manage the pangs, I parceled out out my “snack” of butternut squash/apple soup throughout the day, got busy during my super hungry phases (gym, driving kids), and cheated.
My horrified daughter exclaimed, “YOU CAN’T EAT THAT!” But allow me a defense: three days of juice is hard . I picked up all of my meals today and stacked them neatly in the fridge. Every time I opened the door to grab a juice, there they were, colorful cheery muses begging me to indulge. I’m human.
So I ate some of the butternut arugula salad. I mean, is that reeeeally cheating? Matter of opinion. Let’s move on.
In the fall, root vegetables are at the crux of every chef’s seasonal dishes. Because butternut squash is autumn’s new pumpkin spice, OK’s cleanse is rife with it. So if you love butternut squash, this is your detox season. Me, I’m not nuts about the squash, but their butternut/ apple soup is delicious.
DAY 4:
Feeling fabulous.
Today, I swan-dived into the world of vegan detox meals. It includes a morning drink “shot,”
breakfast, lunch, dinner, “dessert,” and two juices a day.
I loved eating solid food without feeling like a reprobate. But they’re serious about detoxing, so expect grains, chopped raw vegetables and fall fruits, roasted squash, sweet potato, a few figs, and standard seasoning (salt, pepper, olive oil, lemon).
For me, it’s not easy. But, shoot, like I said, I feel great. I even agreed to go to Costco and bought my kids a case of potato chips. Mom’s spreading the joy (and she’s not crazy about potato chips).
DAY 5: Pretty much the same as Day 4.
DAY 6:
So, today is Halloween and, like I said earlier, I’m human. So I chugged my morning shot, ate my breakfast grains, downed my juices and my sweet potato salad, then made myself a cocktail-to-go at 5 and broke my ‘tox at a friends’ pizza truck spooky party.
I know one should ease back into one’s normal diet to avoid unleashing hell on one’s digestive tract, but I didn’t eat much. Nothing tasted as delicious as I wanted it to, which is a common side effect of cleanses.
Candy didn’t tempt me, either, but mostly because companies have cheapened their trickor-treats to the point of sugared wax, knowing they’ll sell regardless of taste or mouth-feel.
However, I did go to bed fantasizing about what I’d have for breakfast the next morning (egg white wrap at The Porch.)
I’ll also feel great when I do, and it’s fun to have accomplished something.

It was midday and 12-year old Ted Deinard sat at the bar with his father, trying to stifle his hiccups. The bar was quiet given the time of day –Ted’s hiccups were not.
“I’ve got a sure-fire remedy to cure those hiccups if you want to try,” the bartender said.
Ted nodded his head yes, and leaned over the shiny bar counter to watch the bartender work. He squeezed half a lemon into a glass, added four tablespoons of salt, and ground in a pimento-filled olive. He added a shot of vodka, a shot of brandy, Coca-Cola from the soda gun, and a maraschino cherry.
Then a tablespoon of honey, two tablespoons of confectioner’s sugar, a dollop of sour cream, some grenadine, then ice. He mixed this concoction in a cocktail shaker, poured it into a glass, and lifted it up for inspection.
As Ted reached out to grab the glass, the bartender looked him square in the eye and waited for a quick moment before asking, “Are your hiccups gone?”
They were, in fact, gone.
Ted didn’t want his time with his father to be cut short. The moments he had with him were so precious that he’d do anything just to be near the man he rarely saw yet idolized. If that meant sitting with him in a half-empty bar, so be it.
Ted’s father died of alcoholism a few years later.
There was a time when his father had the world at his fingertips. He was good-looking and well-liked, a fighter pilot the in the Navy, and a Harvard Law School graduate. He had a beautiful wife and children.
But alcoholism is a fickle thief that steals these things away – leaving isolation and a spiral of shame where there was once a vibrant life.
Today, Ted is the Chairman of the Board of Recovery Community Development (RCD), an organization for men that helps break the cycle of isolation stemming from addiction. Their mission is to bridge the gap between becoming sober and lasting sobriety by providing safe, affordable housing, a community of support, and an opportunity to find full-time work: tangible tools and solutions to rebuild their lives.
“When you come out of treatment you need to be surrounded by a community that understands you, offers support, and knows what you need,” says Tony Kiniry, Executive Director, Westport resident, and sober for 25 years. “Giving others the time and ability to get back on their feet, to walk before they run, is very unique in what we do at RCD.”
Sadly, the need for RCD has never been greater, given the epidemic of addiction clutching almost all of our families in some way. Currently, there are two at-capacity sober living
houses in Norwalk and Bridgeport, and another one scheduled to open soon.
“As a community, we’re looking out for each other,” says RCD House Manager Dan Chilvers, who grew up in Fairfield. “But when someone calls and asks if there’s a bed available and I have to say ‘no’ because we’re at capacity, it affects me in a way that I can’t even put words to...all I can think is where’s he going to go?”
Dan knows how vital it is to have people who support you and hold you accountable. Not only is he in recovery, but he has helped countless others go from believing their lives were over to thriving in a way they thought was no longer possible.
James Wheeler has been in and out of rehab programs six times over the years. Each stint in rehab got him sober, but as soon as he came back to his “real” life he quickly relapsed. Even though he was surrounded by a loving and caring family, he didn't have the scaffolding to manage the chronic and progressive nature of the disease.
He felt alone and hopeless, desperate for relief from the crippling feeling of wanting to escape from himself.
Thankfully for James, the last time he came out of rehab he found RCD, and the community enabled him to finally get back what he had lost.
“I owe my life to this community. I live in a place where I am surrounded by support, I have a job and work that I love, and I have the tools and resources to pull myself back up when I need to,” says James.
Today, James, a master carpenter, is an integral part of RCD as the Renovation Manager for its fully licensed construction arm. In this role, he not only oversees the work, but he helps train residents who wish to gain new skills for employment in construction.
“I know it’s [RCD] the only thing keeping me sober,” shares James. “Know how to ask for help and rely on other people, that’s the key to success.”
Addiction would like us to believe that we are alone; that no one else can relate to what we are going through, and there is nothing we can do for ourselves or our loved ones to loosen its destructive grip. RCD shines a light onto this falsity, leaving in its place connection. It’s here where community is built, hope is restored, and lives are put back together.
“WHEN YOU COME OUT OF TREATMENT YOU NEED TO BE SURROUNDED BY A COMMUNITY THAT UNDERSTANDS YOU, OFFERS SUPPORT, AND KNOWS WHAT YOU NEED.”
As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx.
Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.
ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMSWho doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Assuming you are sweaty from leg lifts and flutter kicks, our suggestion is to layer your sweaty tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast.
A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Since feet are one of the ways the body regulates temperature, you want to go airy with your footwear after a workout.
Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.
What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.
Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations.
Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look.
Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

You may have heard some of these terms before: Facelift, Lower Facelift, Mini Facelift, Deep Plane Facelift, Ponytail Lift. What do all of these mean?
The good news is that most of these words describe the same thing – a facelift. The differences are more marketing than anything else, but there are a few terms you should know. First, what is a facelift? Traditionally, a facelift is a surgical procedure to lift the jowls and restore the jawline. As we age, our facial tissues descend. When we are young, we have full cheeks and a sharp jawline. With age that fullness descends into our lower face resulting in hollow cheeks, heavy jowls, and loss of jawline contour. A facelift restores the fullness in the cheeks while lifting the jowls and restoring a youthful jawline.
In almost every case, a facelift is combined with a necklift. So much so that the two are often synonymous. A necklift tightens the neck skin and muscle bands that commonly appear with age. Together, a facelift and necklift can turn back the clock, resulting in a natural, youthful appearance.
Today’s facelift is very different than what you may have seen. Gone are the windswept looks of the 70’s, and the overfilled, overtightened looks of the 90s. Modern facelifts deliver a natural result without looking “done”. The sign of a good facelift is not looking like you had a facelift.
Just as important to consider are other procedures often done at the same time as a facelift and necklift. Examples include upper or lower eyelid surgery, a brow lift, fat grafting to the cheeks and temples, or a lip lift. Every person ages differently and may need different procedures to meet their goals. One goal stands above all others – a safe, natural result.
