LIFESTYLE LETTER

Spring is here!

April 2022 PUBLISHER

Marisa MacLean | marisa.maclean@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Robin Moyer Chung | robin.chung@citylifestyle.com

Spring symbolizes new beginnings and fresh temperate air invites us to spend more time outdoors. Seasonal sports are starting up and kids can finally run around outside. While fun, this can also cause injuries. We talked to Anthony Silver of Gray Matters about brain maps for accurately detecting concussions and aiding in recovery. It’s also time for spring cleaning, going through your closet and getting rid of old clothes to make room for new. Or maybe you want to spruce up the space so you can better find your warm-weather clothes without having to claw through piles of sweaters. Closet Factory gave us tips and advice about organizing closets that can save you time and frustration. If you are getting rid of old clothes, consider swapping them for new-toyou clothes at The Exchange Project or visiting one of Westport’s consignment shops so your shopping is eco-friendly - and you can enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Sustainable Westport has other ways you can go green and help diminish our town’s carbon footprint. Speaking of green, it’s time to think of planting your garden. To those of you who want to grow your own seedlings, it can be tricky. So we’re passing on some how-tos from an amateur expert gardener in Westport. Plus, we have some eco-friendly picks so you can shop sustainably. Lastly, it’s time to start thinking of beach reads, believe it or not! We highly recommend Jane Green’s new book, Sister Stardust. Read an excerpt in this issue! Go get your green on!

Different types of seedlings.

TIPS AND ADVICE FOR GROWING SEEDLINGS AT HOME Maturing pepper plants in plastic cup "pots."

22

S EASON A L SE T U P S | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON

SEEDLINGS: THE LOVE AND LABOR Growing your own seedlings is to gardening what side-stepping up a mountain face is to skiing. Some people may revel in the challenge, others just want to take the ski lift and call it a day. Every year Jayne Chu, our favorite amateur gardening expert, straps on her proverbial skis and inches up the slippery slope of sowing seedlings. We asked about the process, for our reader-farmers who want to add an extra layer of difficulty to their gardening journey and clutter their home in the process. Excited to learn more? Let’s go! Equipment Equipment can be expensive, so do your research. You’ll need: Grow light: A light that mimics sunlight. Heating pad: A pad that gently heats the seeds to effect germination. Small 2” starter pots: You can up-cycle materials found in your house like egg cartons, berry containers, or toilet paper rolls, but then you end up with “a whole heap of mess in the house,” says Jayne. Get biodegradable seed starter pots made of peat or CowPots or use plastic seed starter trays and save them for next year. Most important, the seeds need to be less than 2” deep so the heat from the pad gets through. Larger 4” pots: When the plants get bigger they need more space to grow.

Seed starter mix: Don’t use soil! Use a lighter mixture. Jayne likes Espoma which is at hardware stores or your local nursery. Seeds Jayne collects these throughout the year, preferring heirloom variety for cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers. “My favorite is Baker seeds, sold online. I also buy seeds at Gilbertie’s, grocery and hardware stores, and share seeds with friends and FB groups.” Westport Library has a seed library and exchange that lets you take home 2-3 seeds for every plant you want to grow. WestportLibrary.Libguides.com/SeedLibrary Planting Bury the seeds in the starter mix March/ April. You’ll need 8-10 weeks for appropriate growth. “All seedlings have two starter leaves. You want a second and third layer of leaves, get the plant around 4” before you transfer to 4” pots.” Before garden planting, seedlings need to be “hardened” or acclimated from indoors to outdoors. Place them outside for 1/2 hour on day 1, then an hour day 2, and continue lengthening the time each day (unless there’s a cold snap or rain.) Be wary of too much sun as they’re easily sunburned. Just like human babies. CONTINUED >

Time for the garden!

Third set of leaves.

Seedlings beneath the grow light.

Rule of Thumb(s) March/April: Plant the seeds in their baby pots beneath the grow light. Mother’s Day: Prep the garden. Jayne’s tip: “I get my family to clean and prep the garden. It’s my Mother’s Day gift. It’s a free way for them to make me happy, otherwise they’d have to do it begrudgingly.” Memorial Day: After the last frost, transfer seedlings into the garden. Then wait. Note on Watering Seedlings: Yes. Every day. If they look dry, quench them. Don’t go on vacation or they all die. Note on Soil for Your Garden: If your flora isn’t flourishing, first look to the soil. “UConn’s soil testing lab tests dirt for a nominal fee. I bagged some and sent it off. They said I over-composted, which is a common mistake. They were very specific about how to amend the soil with specific ingredients to optimize growth for healthy plants. It also saved time and money.” SoilTest.UConn.edu

ORGANIZATION, DREAM CLOSETS AND MAN CAVES, OH MY! NATALIYA BRYKSA OF CLOSET FACTORY EXPLAINS HOW A PROPERLY DESIGNED SPACE CAN GIVE YOU TIME BACK IN YOUR DAY!

28

EXP E RT H E LP | HOM E + DE S I GN

I've never been a math person. In fact, geometry specifically was the bane of my high school career. However, if someone would have explained to me that with a little more studying, geometry could contribute to having the closet of my dreams? Then I would’ve paid a bit more attention. But here I am. Without the closet of my dreams and admittedly in a profession where I

Nataliya with husband, Nazar, in one of their designed spaces

NATALIYA BRYKSA

haven’t used geometry since the final I took in Mr. Ritchie’s class. If you’re like me, prone to avoiding any DIY for fear of a true Pinterest flop, look no further than Closet Factory of CT. They are pros at creating enviable custom storage and design solutions in your home. I spoke with the owner, Nataliya Bryksa, about closets and storage and how best to build a dream space. There are a myriad of things to consider when customizing your dream closet to what you love to wear, not limited to: • Are you a shoe lover who’s running out of space for those new pumps? Shoe shelving helps you easily spot and grab the pair you want. • Lots of scarves and handbags? Get a bunch of drawers to store them neatly. Consider builtins that don’t encroach upon precious closet real estate. • You’re the type who utilizes the floor as storage space or have a large collection of jewelry? Consider built-in drawers with dividers to keep items in a safer, more organized fashion. • Creating an ultra-feminine space for your wardrobe? No need to worry about the man in your life. They can outfit his closet in darker, sleeker, more masculine wood and design. The perfect compromise for his and hers. Although he may be more into cars than clothes. Yes, garages are to men what closets are to women. Nataliya explains, “Garages are the ‘for now’ place. Things pile up in the winter and garages are a big focus for spring cleaning.” So Closet Factory tackles these as well. Because designing garages can be tricky. Stuff like cars, bikes, and automatic garage doors make your usable space much smaller than you might think. You may want traditional garage storage solutions - work benches and wall organizers - or maybe you want something more exciting. You can transform your garage into a souped-up man cave, personal gym, and even a personalized home bar. Cheers to that!

Aside from closets and garages, the team also handles offices, laundry rooms, pantries, entertainment centers and beyond! The team works with all types of spaces in all budgets. When a custom space is created and organized properly, Nataliya’s clients get time back in their day and are truly happier. No one enjoys the frustration that brews when you can’t find something you desperately need. “When you can’t see your items, you don’t know what you have. To be able to see what you have in your pantry or closet literally gives you time back into your day instead of wasting time looking through packed or overcrowded spaces” says Nataliya. Jane Green's New Novel about Talitha Getty and the Extravagant Sixties ARTICLE BY ROBIN MOYER CHUNG

34

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

Talitha Getty embodied the style and extravagance of the 1960’s. Fascinated by this socialite and model, Jane Green spent nine months researching her, finding that not much existed about Talitha other than iconic photos and thin accounts of parties and pastimes. “I had to come at it sideways, working from the outside in,” Jane writes, “reading countless memoirs from people whose paths had crossed with the Gettys.” Sister Stardust, a PARADE Magazine Most Anticipated Book of the Year, is a compelling and thrilling story of Claire, from small-town England, swept up in Talitha’s Morocco. Swirling with fame, rock, drugs, and excess in every direction, the glamorous lifestyle turns sinister, reflecting the trajectory of Talitha’s life: My room was off another courtyard, a second garden with a tiny star-shaped fountain in the middle but, much to my disappointment, no peacocks. The walls were coral waxed plaster, and a fire roared in the fireplace. Lanterns sat on either side, and the scent of mint and rosemary filled the room, mixing with the delicious smells of the orange wood burning. A four-poster bed with intricately carved posts was hung with lavish tapestries of green velvet embroidered with gold. Ancient Amazigh rugs covered the stone f loor. The bathroom had rich royal blue plaster on the walls, a plaster called tadelakt,a traditional lime-based technique that had been used in Morocco for thousands of years. The f loor and bath were covered in zellige, a mosaic of tiny tiles, in blues, greens, yellows and reds. As I lay back on the bed, turning my head to look out the window, I caught the shadow of the Atlas Mountains in the distance. I was drifting into sleep when there was a knock on the door. I managed to rouse myself, my hair mussed, and opened it to find a man standing there, his arms filled with clothes.

“Pour vous,” he said, as I stepped aside to let him in. I presumed either Lissy or Talitha had sent them, knowing I had nothing to wear. Once he had left, when I laid them on the bed, I knew they were from Talitha. There were midnight blue velvet robes embroidered in reds, yellows, blues and golds; beaded kaftans that swept to the f loor, harem pants, silks and velvets and beads. And among the traditional Moroccan clothes were Yves Saint Laurent couture dresses, elaborately patterned fabrics with high beaded collars, lavish silk fringe encircling the skirts, down to the f loor. I had never handled clothes more beautiful, and was far too terrified to wear the Saint Laurent. I had never understood before this moment why people spent fortunes on clothes. I thought you could wear Miss Selfridge and make it look expensive, but I now understood that wasn’t true; these weren’t just clothes, they were art. Which is how I knew they were Talitha’s. Just as I was holding up one of the Saint Laurent dresses, noting the beaded corset, the bedroom door opened. There, in the doorway, with the sunlight shimmering behind her like a halo, stood Talitha. “Oh! Look how perfect that is! That’s exactly the one I was hoping you’d pick! Lissy said you hadn’t brought anything. I hope you don’t mind my sending down some clothes. Aren’t Yves’s clothes the most beautiful?” I wondered if she was wearing Yves now, in a richly embroidered short dress with bell sleeves, strappy gladiator sandals climbing up her calves. I looked at the dress I was holding and sighed. “I can’t wear this! It must have cost a fortune. I’d be terrified of spilling something on it.” Her eyes danced with delight. “Darling, it was a gift from Yves. If you spill anything on it, I’ll get another. Try it on.” End of excerpt. CONTINUED >

ARTICLE BY ROBIN MOYER CHUNG

Carly Ridloff preparing for an exchange event.

Our collective eco-consciousness has finally wended its way to the fashion industry. This industry alone is responsible for 10% of our world’s carbon emissions due to endless wastewater and harmful chemicals from dyes and synthetic fabrics. Both companies and consumers are trying harder than ever to reduce the enormous carbon footprint stamped from constructing apparel. One of the most effective ways of diminishing this imprint is lengthening the lifetime of clothing instead of throwing them in a landfill. In Westport, there are women who’ve been doing this for years, and a woman who’s taken it to a new level. But let’s start with me. About 18 years ago, while window-shopping on the Miracle Mile in Palm Beach, I spotted a fabulous vintage Lily Pulitzer dress. CONTINUED >

“There was consignment [in 1989], it just wasn’t good.”

It had to be mine. I entered the store and excitedly asked “How much is this dress?” “Isn’t it wonderful?” The saleswoman trilled. “We just got it! It’s $600.” “Oh… Great!” I nodded conspiratorially, as if to communicate, “What a reasonable price!” Then I feigned interest in a nearby handbag before discreetly leaving. To be clear: this was an old Lily Pulitzer dress. It wasn’t seminal fashion nor haute couture. Three years later I found the same dress in Westport’s Roundabout. The price? $70. That’s when I fell in love with consignment. Pawing through racks of designer apparel in a way I could never do at Neiman Marcus. Aspirational clothing at prices I could finally afford. The rare but wonderful OMG of a beautiful aubergine sweater for $19 instead of $350. It’s where the love of the clothes meets the love of the chase. Designer Label Consignments and Roundabout are valuable in this regard. Roundabout opened in 1989. According to owner, Laurie, “There was consignment [in 1989], it just wasn’t good.” Back then consignment was either overvalued - jacked-up prices for “vintage” high end apparel in boutiques on Madison Avenue, or underwhelming - unattractive and disheveled, incongruous with the price tags on the garments. Laurie says of those stores. “I’d rather pay thrift store prices if I’m shopping in a store that looks like a thrift store.” She borrowed $1,500 from her dad and created a consignment store that

42

looked like an upscale boutique. Over 30 years later, Roundabout is stronger than ever, thanks in part to a great idea well-executed. I say “in part” because, thanks to today’s green initiatives, consignment has become eco-hot. What began as access to high-end clothing is now recognized as planet-friendly: increasing the longevity of (perfectly good) existing clothes reduces the demand for making new clothes which creates dangerous toxins ands strips the world of precious resources. And fashionistas are loving it. Loving it so much that they’re thinking of other ways to increase the longevity of attire and keeping it out of landfills. Enter: The Exchange Project (TEP), a “sustainable shopping event” and the brainchild of Carly Ridloff. TEP is a really fun way to “shop” new clothes and - bonus! - provides good motivation to clean out your closet. Based on a “new to you” premise, women gather, sip wine, and select fabulous attire.

IT’S SIMPLE: • Grab around 10 pieces or more of clothes (the good stuff - not the free t-shirt you tried, and failed, to Flashdance). • Hand over your items to the TEP team at a designated location and time (check the site or instagram) • Pay the administration/attendance fee. • Show up to the party and help yourself to as many items as you donated at no additional charge. Of course, the items should be in excellent second-hand condition - no tears, stains, residue, or odd scent. Style, and sustainability, knows no season. *These items are donated to charity or, if necessary, thrown away. The Exchange Project’s next event is the evening of June 29. Kitchen Confidential A DESIGNER DISHES ON THE TRENDY AND TIMELESS AT THE HEART OF THE HOME

ARTICLE BY MEREDITH GUINESS When it comes to choosing an expert in kitchen design and renovation there’s a crucial attribute many homeowners probably don’t consider, says Neil Orwick, owner/designer at Kitchen Traditions. Is it experience? Yeah, Neil’s got decades of that – from art-dealing to construction to design. Is it an eye for fresh new trends that will stand the test of time? He’s savvy on that count, too, having completed stunning work from Manhattan to Martha’s Vineyard. Give up? “I cook. I like to cook,” Neil says. “So I design a kitchen to work.” And it’s that ability to see what each culinary customer needs to succeed that has made Kitchen Traditions a mainstay of the design and construction scene since 2003. Neil Orwick, Owner/Designer at Kitchen Traditions (Photo: John Videler)

“I love solving problems. And I like building relationships. Who cooks in the house? Who doesn’t?” Neil asks. “Design is the elegant solution to problems.” An art major at Trinity University in Texas, Neil spent 15 years in construction before becoming a designer in 2013. He bought Kitchen Traditions in 2019, in large part because of its premium cabinet lines, including Shiloh and WoodMode, brands that deliver high quality and style within an appropriate budget. Under his leadership, the team offers everything from traditional design to jazzy pops of color for a custom look for the kitchen, bath – even the living room. Since the company has kitchen in its name,

though, Neil offered us a few thoughts on what’s new and now in the hub of every home. “Stone countertops are still, far and away, the most popular option for new kitchens,” he says. “But the term ‘stone’ encompasses a myriad of surfaces, all with different pros and cons.” Natural stone options include granite, marble, limestone, soapstone and more. While marble is beautiful, it can etch and stain and is, in Neil’s opinion, “a generally terrible choice for kitchen countertops.” Granite counters are among the hardest and most durable and provide a budget-friendly option. Popular quartzites offer a winning combo of durability and color range, with Taj Mahal and Mont Blanc featuring beautiful veining and calming patterns.

47

And then there’s ‘engineered’ stone or quartz. “They are a bit softer than granite and don’t take heat as well, but they have a myriad of color options that can look natural,” Neil says. “And, because they’re manufactured, they have less variability between slabs.” The placement of appliances can mean the difference between a pretty kitchen and one that’s both attractive and functional. In addition to the familiar ‘work triangle’ between the refrigerator, range and sink, Neil and his team consider visual balance, traffic patterns and seating in a kitchen to find the best arrangement. “Appliances need to be specified before we order the cabinets,” he says. “The cabinets are ordered to fit around the appliances, usually with very tight tolerances. Getting everything together in the right order and understanding how and when information is needed is a big part of what we do.” As for cabinets, he is using a lot of light-stained wood with interesting graining, such as Alder and Poplar, to accent the slightly off-white cabinets that are trending now. And forget about all those countertop garages for your food processor or blender. Neil says walk-in pantries are the place to sleekly store those smaller appliances. When it comes to heat, gas is still king, though gas range companies are seeing lengthy wait times for products. Hungry now? Neil recommends induction cooking as an alternative.

Another pro tip? “If you have the space, double ovens are the way to go. They sit higher and are easier to reach into.” If fresh-baked cookies and weekday roasts are a staple in your home, that second oven may come in handy. If it’s only going to be used at Thanksgiving, you might want to leave that option on the back burner. Adding a steam oven – even swapping the triedand-true microwave for one – might be a wise move. They reheat food quickly without rendering it dry

or rubbery and are champs when it comes to baking bread, he says. In the end, thoughtful planning is the key to building a kitchen where family and friends relax. Knowing so many people are enjoying the spaces they’ve all worked together to create is what inspires him to keep growing and learning. “It’s very satisfying,” he says. KitchenTraditions.net

The Westport Transfer Station

Sustainable Westport ARTICLE BY JEN BERNIKER

On a Mission Westport's compost initiative.

O UR TOWN | ED U CATION

Johanna Martell and Gately Ross (Photo: Jerri Graham)

Sustainable Westport, the non-profit that advises town bodies on matters that touch on environmental responsibility and sustainability, has two fresh faces at the helm. Co-Executive Directors Gately Ross, a veterinarian with a focus on the health and conservation of wild and domestic animals, and Johanna Martell, a lawyer and business advisor, have traded their professional lives for the volunteer eco-warrior life, and they have a lot on their (compostable, bamboo) plates. What drew them in? Johanna has always been interested in environmental issues but hadn’t been active around the cause. Gately, on the other hand, says she’s spent her professional life acting on her “profound love for the environment.” She found herself raising her family in Westport and wanted to do something purposeful in the community. Their goal is to expedite Sustainable Westport’s mission - a Net Zero community by 2050 - by bringing low-stress, low-cost lifestyle changes into your household now. Gately explains, “We want to educate people about what they can do on an individual level, because everyone’s little something adds up to a big something and every step inspires another step.” Here are a few small steps:

REDUCING FOOD WASTE What you can do: You can garden at home and compost in your yard, hire a commercial hauler to take it away (check out Curbside Compost or Action Waste) or, the free alternative, drop it at the transfer station’s collection bin. The Transfer Station, 300 Sherwood Island Road, has a sustainable solution for everything you can’t or don’t want to keep. WestportCT.gov Calendar note: Sustainable Westport, with the Westport Farmers Market and the Remarkable Theater, is presenting a film festival focused on food systems to the big outdoor screen this spring: stay tuned!

NO SINGLE USE PLASTIC What you can do: Gately says, “I recommend people start to explore household items that don’t include plastic. I now buy all of my detergents and soaps in naked packaging (and I’m a snoot about my products). Instead of many plastic bottles of dish or hand wash soap, I’m buying something that can be reconstituted in water.” Calendar note: Sustainable Westport plans to partner with Staples High School students to host a beach clean-up this April around Earth Day, sponsored by ZenWTR (a brand executive is a local resident). The bottled water brand, packaged in 100% recycled oceanbound plastic, is the first beverage in the world to receive a Plastic Negative Certification from the Plastic Credit Exchange. Isn’t that positive?

GREEN BUILDINGS What you can do: Johanna states, “We’d love to see more homes move towards renewable energy. But in the meantime, you can do a home energy assessment through EnergizeCT. It’s affordable and can pay for itself very quickly.” EnergizeCT.com

WANT TO DO MORE? Gately and Johanna have a team of multi-disciplinary leaders on their Advisory Board, including chair and resident expert Peter Boyd and Tony McDowell, Executive Director at Earthplace. But they need more community involvement, specifically middle level team leaders around home and commercial energy efficiency. “We have a lot of incentives from the state to push solar energy along, but you don’t want to just rely on the solar providers for information,” explains Johanna. They also need someone to head up the commercial waste CONTINUED >

reduction program. They’re already working with restaurant owners and the Massachusetts based Center for Ecotechnology to set up a certification process which would award a badge to restaurants if they follow requirements, like food waste management and local food sourcing. “But someone is going to need to run with it.”

Concussion’s Conclusive Recovery GRAY MATTERS’ BASELINE BRAIN MAPS HELP KIDS (AND ADULTS) HEAL ARTICLE BY ROBIN MOYER CHUNG

Anthony Silver, founder and executive director of Gray Matters, knows a bit about concussions. Rear-ended by a texting driver, his daughter suffered both a concussion and post-concussion syndrome. She could no longer concentrate on her schoolwork and was forced to drop out of school for a semester. Fortunately, he had recorded a baseline of his daughter’s brain activity before her accident. He was able to discern the seriousness of the injury and follow her progress until full recovery. Brain trauma, not visible to the eye, is a tricky thing to address. According to Jason Bouton, sports medicine expert at Gray Matters, “Concussions are the only thing

where there’s a question mark. It’s not as obvious as an ankle sprain which is why there are so many questions about it.” Because concussions aren’t visible, kids may get the go-ahead to hit the gyms and fields before they’re fully recovered. In being active too early, they run the risk of “second impact syndrome” (which is almost always fatal) or, far more likely, is “overlapping concussions”; receiving a second injury before the first is fully healed. Kids who suffer from overlapping concussions have a significant worsening of symptoms, sometimes from relatively minor impacts, and longer, more difficult recoveries.

59

The unreliability of cumbersome conventional baseline testing created a need for a better method. This opened the door for qEEG, a technology used by NYU, NFL, the US Military, and Gray Matters. In fact, Anthony has spent a dozen years studying the use of qEEG brain maps in tracking and treating concussions. He and Jason recorded brain maps of 50 high school athletes at the beginning of a school term. Of these 50, four suffered from concussions during the season. Because of the baseline recordings, they were able to effectively track the injuries and ensure full recovery before the kids returned to the games. Now joined by Dr David Wang, head team doctor at Quinnipiac University, the team at Gray Matters is recording brain activity baselines for Quinnipiac athletes, and are hoping to do the same for kids in Fairfield County. Anthony describes qEEG as the “digitized measurement of the brain activity, measured at the scalp surface”. The ability to measure actual brain activity quickly, using non-invasive and highly portable technology, explains its increasing popularity. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to say that qEEG saves lives or, at least, quality of lives.

“I believe this is the only way to protect our kids and make informed decisions if they’re injured.”

60

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | H E ALTH + W E LLNE S S

CONSIDER THESE STATISTICS: • At least 9% of all high school athletes will get a concussion within any given year. • Those playing football, ice hockey, and soccer are most at risk. • After car crashes, sports are the leading cause of traumatic brain injury in individuals aged 15-24 years. • Girls are twice as likely as boys to get a concussion. Gray Matters will record baselines for schools and teams at no cost, for groups of at least 50 students. They will charge a nominal fee for holding these recordings, which pays for the cost of testing and treatment should your child suffer from brain injury. Anthony explains, “I believe this is the only way to protect our kids and make informed decisions if they’re injured. It’s a technology being adopted very quickly, and we have the experience and expertise to bring it to our community.” If you’re interested, call your friends. Rally your teams. Alert your neighborhood. Organize a group of kids for a free baseline brain map which could save you a lot of headaches in the long run. Literally. GrayMattersCT.com

Eco-Friendly But Make it Classic Chic I am so excited to share some of my favorite eco picks with you! A little pro tip for shopping green: do your research and learn how the company considers itself eco-friendly. Do their values align with yours? How are they sourcing materials, how are they manufacturing, are they using plastic in the packaging? Clothing lines, especially, are starting to create eco-friendly fabrics and working those practices into the entire company.

Pela Many of us get a new phone every year or two, and because Apple changes the phone shape slightly each time (eye roll) that creates a lot of phone case waste. I love the Pela brand because they make tech accessories for almost all your Apple products that are compostable! So your phone case doesn’t become landfill.

Kule I’ve always had an affinity for a classic horizontal stripe tee and nobody does them like Kule. Their new green line made from organic cotton, sustainable washing, and biodegradable packaging, proves it’s #KuleToBeGreen. Now they’re applying what they’ve learned to rest of their business: how to develop collections, how to ship, even how to make their labels. They have core styles for women, men, and kids.

(On Zac) Dudley Stephens: Founded in Greenwich by two sisters and their mom, they create chic eco-friendly fleece from water bottles and other recycled fabrics, plus they help support St. Jude’s Hospital (which isn’t necessarily green, but nice nonetheless.) Now they have a cult-like following and if you've ever put one on you’d understand why. I love the Greenport style fleece; it’s great to throw on with leggings when you’re headed to the gym, pair with jeans for lunch around town, or dress up for evening outings.

LET’S

talk ABOUT ears

Before Infant Ear Molding

After Infant Ear Molding

The ears are a major facial feature, but they aren’t usually the focus of attention. It’s when they become the focus of attention because they are too large, too prominent, or are misshapen or malformed, that patients seek the expertise of a plastic surgeon. Thankfully, surgical and non-surgical options are available to correct many common ear deformities.

INFANT EAR MOLDING Many children are born with misshapen, folded, or prominent (sticking out) ears. However, most ears self-correct within the first few days after birth. For those ears that do not self-correct, infant ear molding is available as a non-invasive, painless, and permanent way to correct most ear deformities. If started within the first few weeks of life, ear molding painlessly corrects 90% of ear deformities. A soft silicone mold is used to gently correct the shape of the ear cartilage. Results are usually permanent after just four weeks and most babies sleep through the entire application process.

OTOPLASTY For older children and adults, misshapen or prominent ears can be corrected by a surgical procedure called otoplasty. This is sometimes known as ear pinning when it addresses prominent ears. This outpatient procedure can be done under local or general anesthesia and involves correcting the shape and angle of the ears through a small incision hidden behind the ear. Otoplasty is often done around school age but can also be done later in life.

EARLOBES Torn, split, stretched, or disfigured earlobes are easily corrected under local anesthesia in the office. If repairing a torn or stretched piercing, you may have to wait several months to re-pierce your ears. Lastly… the secret to restoring youthful ears? A drop of filler or fat into the earlobes can fix deflated, drooping earlobes!
