Welcome HOME

"Home is where the heart is." To me, this is more than an expression, it's a feeling of sanctuary for where we lay our head to rest, it's where we sit over a meal and discuss the day, and it's where loved ones can just be themselves no matter what.  Home can mean a lot of different things to different people, but no matter the meaning, we can all agree that "home" takes work.  Luckily for all of us here in Greater Westfield, we have a whole slew of seasoned pros in the area that can help keep our homes in tip-top shape.

In this issue, we will introduce you to a few of the area's best.  Now, nobody WANTS to spend their hard-earned money on home improvement or repair... but take it from me, a guy who's been there, it's better to think proactive on this one.  Get your roof inspected, have your HVAC system serviced, and you'll be happy you did!  We will also introduce you to some ideas for home decor that will not only "WOW" you, but they will not break the bank!

I hope you enjoy this issue, and are looking forward to the upcoming spring as much as I am.

Cheers,

March 2025

NextGen Roofing

Don’t Always Replace: Repair, Restore, Rejuvenate

At NextGen Roofing, the philosophy is practical: not every home needs an overhaul or for the roof to be replaced. Since 2014, this Westfield-based business focuses on repairing, refreshing, and rejuvenating aging exteriors. Their mission? To protect your home and preserve its character without breaking the bank.

Westfield native Rene Gauthier started NextGen Roofing with a passion for construction and community. Over the past 11 years, the company has grown into a welloiled machine with family-oriented culture operated by a dedicated team of managers, field supervisors, sales/customer service reps, carpenters, and roofers.

Roof rejuvenation is at the heart of their services. Without a strong roof, a home will never last the test of time. Using a special oil to restore elasticity to aging shingles, they extend a roof’s lifespan and offer a sustainable alternative to full replacement. Beyond this, NextGen also installs skylights, siding,

and windows. As one of only two Master Elite Installers certified by GAF from Worcester to Pittsfield, NextGen’s quality is unmatched in the area.

At their core it is community involvement that shines. From sponsoring youth sports teams to repairing roofs for The Samaritan Inn and Sadie Knox dugouts, their commitment to Westfield is unwavering. “We have a soft spot for kids and families,” Rene shares, noting their recent sponsorship of the 2025 Westfield Wild River Rafting event.

NextGen Roofing isn’t just about shingles and underlayment; it’s about protecting homes, building relationships, and leaving a legacy of integrity. “A roof isn’t just a roof,” Rene says. “It’s the safeguard for a family’s memories. This will be the last roof you ever need, and we’re proud to be a part of that story.”

For reliable repairs and a team that cares, trust NextGen Roofing to keep your family covered.

A roof isn't just a roof.  It's a safeguard for a family's memories.

BUILDING CUSTOMERS FOR LIFE

Masciadrelli and Son Heating & Air Conditioning

ARTICLE BY AMANDA WATERFIELD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY C.PINNEY PHOTOGRAPHY

We strive for nothing less than customers for life.

The motto of Westfield-based Masciadrelli and Son Heating & Air Conditioning is “We strive for nothing less than customers for life.” When Greg Masciadrelli opened his business nearly 36 years ago, he began laying the foundation for that level of success.

Now in its fourth decade, Masciadrelli and Son has established a thriving business that serves customers from one end of the state to the other – including some customers who have been with him since he started in 1989. Greg and his son, Jack, along with a third professional, Garrett Purdy, install, maintain, and repair heating and cooling equipment for residential and commercial clients.

Jack is a 2020 graduate of St. Mary’s High School, completed an HVAC program through Springfield Technical Community College, and recently earned his general contractor’s license. He’s been working by his dad’s side since he was in high school and is now a full-time employee. Jack looks forward to growing Masciadrelli and Son while maintaining the strong relationships that he and his dad have established with their existing customers. For now, Greg has no plans to slow down. “I’m going to work until they tell me to go home,” jokes Greg. “I enjoy doing it. I love working with my son. At some point it will be all his.”

The two men live and breathe the business – talking shop 24/7 in some cases. “We’ll come home from work and talk about it at the dinner table,” says Jack.

Living at home and working with a parent could be a challenge for some folks, but not for these men. Jack is enthusiastic about working with his father. “I enjoy it a lot. We definitely have fun, a lot of laughs,”

says Jack. “He’s easy to work for.” Their rapport seems to make up for the less enjoyable aspects of their work, like spending long, hot days in customers’ attics during the summertime.

With Jack and Garrett on board, Masciadrelli and Son can take on larger jobs. They serve both commercial and residential customers, recently wrapping up work at The Greens, a new housing development in Southwick. Masciadrelli and Son has done installations as far away as Cape Cod. “A lot of times when we go down to the Cape, we never get to see the ocean,” notes Greg. “We’re in people’s basements the whole time.”

Greg acknowledges the personal nature of being in a customer’s home and always gives customers a heads up on what to expect from the service call, including which employee will be in their home.

The field has changed quite a bit since Greg launched the business in 1989. “The equipment is much more efficient,” says Greg. Rebates from utility companies are more widely available, and ductless mini splits for heating and cooling are very popular – offering lower cost to install and run compared with traditional central air conditioning. The Masciadrellis envision a time when technology will play a larger role in the analysis aspect of their work, but the repair side will always remain a hands-on process.

Masciadrelli and Son is looking forward to a future of growth in its second generation. If Greg ever does retire, Jack is ready to take over. For this business, family just works.

Unique Home Treasures

Eclectic Finds at the Bismarck

If you love discovering unique and one-of-a kind furniture and home accessories, Eclectic Finds at The Bismarck in Westfield is a must visit.

Eclectic Finds began when Laura Kelleher was a vendor in The Bismarck, which is owned by next door neighbor Pilgrim Candle. When Covid hit and changed retail, Laura decided to open The Bismarck as a co-op, where she and other vendors sold repurposed vintage and antique pieces as well as offered home décor and color consulting.

Fast forward to today and Laura, along with Cindy Wheeler and Gail Kelly are the creative forces behind this marketplace filled with treasures they have found and lovingly restored, transforming them into pieces that look like they could be from Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware.

The trio, who are passionate about the work they do, have decades of design and decorating experience in traditional, country, farmhouse, and rustic styles, as well as current trends. Cindy owned a floral business in Northampton and later opened Vintage Treasures, also in Northampton and later, Florence for many years until she closed the shop during Covid. It was then that Laura contacted her to join her as a vendor at The Bismarck.

Laura had her own vintage shop, Highland House for many years, and for a time, worked at Osgood Textiles. Gail, until last year, owned Flowers by Webster in Westfield.

After she sold the business, she began to put some pieces she’d refurbished on Facebook Marketplace and started putting furniture on consignment at the Bismarck, joined the team last September. “We have fun,” Gail says of her work with Laura and Cindy. Cindy added that it has been a dream job.

Gail, Cindy and Laura

The women say that although what they do is a lot of work and takes a lot of prep, painting and refinishing the pieces they acquire is soothing. On the days when the shop is closed, the women do a lot of picking, as they call it. Their finds come from friends, neighbors, and estate sales. How do they know when a piece is a good find? “You have to have an eye and visualize what it will look, like,” says Laura. Adds Cindy, “Even if you don’t like something, you get it because someone will like it.” “It’s amazing what you can do with paint and glaze,” Cindy says, adding that old pieces never go out of style – and they are made of wood, which makes them durable and lasting.

Each piece at Eclectic Finds is unique, and as Cindy points out, if you want it, don’t hesitate, because chances are it won’t be there when you go back. The women also offer custom painting and finishes as well as in-home color and decorating consultation, including decorating homes for the holidays.

Customers come to Eclectic Finds from as far as New York, Boston, Vermont and the Berkshires for cabinets, tables, trunks, mirrors, paintings, serving dishes, and more. The selection of items changes daily as new pieces are whitewashed, painted, or sanded down to raw wood in the space behind the sales floor that serves as a workshop.

What do customers look for at Eclectic Finds?

The Pottery Barn look, especially the credenza, is in style and the women can repurpose a piece of furniture and give it that look for far less than a new piece. Younger customers tend to like barnwood and the Industrial style. Shabby Chic is in again, but traditional furniture is not popular. Pops of color –especially greens and blues are in while black and white pieces sell well.

What is exciting for Laura, Gail, and Cindy is when they create vignettes in the shop, a customer visualizes what it will look like in their home and buys it.

Eclectic Finds at the Bismarck is open WednesdaySaturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Find them on Facebook or email, eclecticfindsbismarck@gmail.com

HOUSEPLANTSThe Perfect Roommate

AN INDOOR GARDEN SANCTUARY

The ubiquitous houseplant has long been a cautious curiosity for many. Comments such as “I don’t have a green thumb,” or “I can’t keep anything alive,” have echoed through the rooms and hallways of almost every home in America. Well, it’s time to dispel all the mistruths about whether houseplants are beneficial and to lay the foundation for a little oasis of green happiness in the corner of every home!

By the way, you don’t really need a green thumb as there are plenty of hard-to-kill houseplants that can survive any level of neglect! And remember not only do houseplants look pretty, they also decrease stress and anxiety, increase happiness, and bring a sense of joy and relaxation to every room.

Houseplants make us feel better about ourselves in many ways because they allow us to care for them and we reap the rewards of that love. No one is alone when you have a houseplant, as they are our forever listeners. Yes, some people actually do talk with their houseplants all day long! There are many science-based benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment. Aside from reducing indoor air pollutants and increasing humidity in the

home, house plants have been shown to reduce mental fatigue, accelerate the healing process, as well as improve productivity and focus.

Pothos, spider plants, lady palms, yucca, and succulents are so pretty and easy to grow. It is no wonder that we have seen a revival of indoor gardening trends.  Instagram is teeming with photos of incredible indoor “living green” vignettes that show us all how clever we can be when decorating with house plants! All you

There are many sciencebased benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment.

really need is to a pick a place in the home that has the best light and pick your plants.

Think outside of the box when it comes to decorating with houseplants. Look for underused spaces. Use mixed and matched pots of different sizes and shapes. Turn a shelf into a plant display. Go vertical with some hanging plants or an antique ladder. You can even group some of your favorite plants together into a single large decorative pot.

Signature large plant displays anchor the most well-designed rooms in America and it’s all there for us to look at, learn from, and bring into our own home. Whether combined into a single large decorative pot or clustered together in a corner, always remember the key to any house plant décor is to have a thriller, a tall plant usually with a strong color and form; filler plants that literally will fill the pot covering all the soil; and a spiller plant that trails over the edge

of the pot. Try any combination of your favorite plants or a tried and true combination of a fiddle-leaf fig, a prayer plant, and a string of pearls.

No matter how you look at it, houseplants improve our lives in many ways. Indoor gardens provide us an alternative way to commune with nature and to reconnect with the living world. We all benefit from the additional life that houseplants bring into our homes. In this crazy world of ours, wouldn’t be it nice to return home to your own personal indoor greenspace. Happy gardening!
