July: Explore

Summer is a great time to get out and travel. That's why July is our Explore issue. We can explore both near and far, so this month we have articles that delve into both options!

Claudia Dawley, founder of The Stamped Passport Travel Co., did a lot of exploring around Africa after she graduated college. That travel, along with others, is what sparked her love of discovering new places and led her to create a concierge travel company. This month, she details for us what it was like to go on Safari in sub-Saharan Africa and how her many travels there gives her a unique perspective on how best to arrange a safari vacation.

If explorations closer to home are your thing, you'll want to check out our story on the Rockledge Golf Course here in West Hartford, which is celebrating its centennial this year. This 18-hole course was built on a former historic farm and has a professional golf staff, clubhouse, shop, and restaurant.

You'll also want to check out our story on all things West Hartford. It's a guide for newcomers and natives alike on things to do and see here in town.

Interested in a permanent makeup or a new skin care regimen? We have an article this month on Greta's Beauty Bar, where owner Greta D'Amour not only offers a variety of makeup and skin services, but is a trained instructor who is expanding her business to include teaching some of the techniques.

Finally, we also have articles this month on food you can make to take with you when you're on the road and a travel piece on the Lost Pine Spa and Resort in Austin, Texas.

We hope you enjoy this month's issue of West Hartford Lifestyle Magazine and that you have great explorations this summer!

ROCKLEDGE GOLF CLUB

Rockledge's pro, Josh Moses

CELEBRATING A CENTURY OF EXCELLENCE

Nestled in the heart of West Hartford, Rockledge Golf Club stands as a testament to the rich history and enduring appeal of golf in Connecticut. The course, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, continues to uphold the legacy of quality and community that has made it a beloved local institution for locals and residents across the state.

ARTICLE BY BRIAN BOYER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CONNECTICUT HEADSHOTS
The course at Rockledge

Rockledge’s story began in 1924 when Yale University student Wilton W. “Mike” Sherman transformed his 120-acre estate into a 14-hole golf course. By 1927, the course expanded to 18 holes, hosting numerous prestigious tournaments over the decades. The town purchased the property in 1960 and transformed it into a municipal course.

“Rockledge has a fascinating history,” says Helen Rubino-Turco, Director of Leisure Services. “It’s remarkable how a gentleman’s farm evolved into one of the state’s top golf courses.”

Though a public course, Rockledge is lauded for its private-course quality.

Pro Josh Moses, who played college golf at Nichols College, emphasizes the commitment to excellence.

“We maintain the course entirely in-house, ensuring every detail meets our high standards. Our goal is to provide a top-tier golfing experience for everyone.”

The meticulous upkeep is evident in the lush fairways and well-manicured greens. Rockledge has earned a consistent ranking as one of Connecticut’s best golf courses.

The staff is not resting on those laurels. The team is constantly seeking ways to improve the overall golfer experience. One significant project underway is the enhancement of the driving range.

“THE INCREDIBLE COMMUNITY SUPPORT WE RECEIVE IS HUMBLING.” HELEN RUBINO-TURCO.

“We’re excited about introducing Trackman technology and covered bays,” says Josh “It’s all about staying current with technological advancements and offering our golfers the best tools to improve their game.”

That innovative spirit extends to the pro shop, which is set for upgrades, and the course’s customer service, which is consistently praised for its excellence.

“Our commitment is to provide the best possible product and service,” Helen notes. “We address any issues promptly and work tirelessly to enhance the golfing experience.”

The community’s support is integral to Rockledge’s success. Despite the

unpredictable weather, local golfers remain dedicated.

“The incredible community support we receive is humbling,” says Helen. It’s a testament to the bond between Rockledge and West Hartford.”

This bond is celebrated through various events. This includes the upcoming anniversary celebrations, which include a special summer golf tournament and then a gala on Sept. 6,

Rockledge’s influence extends beyond its greens. The course has been the starting ground for many successful golfers, including LPGA winner Liz Janangelo, who won the Connecticut State Women’s

Amateur Golf Championship at just 13. The course’s history of nurturing talent is a point of pride.

Additionally, Rockledge shares best practices with other courses and benchmarks against industry leaders, fostering continuous improvement. “Our relationships with counterparts help us constantly raise our game,” Josh says. “We’re always learning and adapting.”

Rockledge Golf Club offers more than just golf. The clubhouse, renovated in 1995 and again in 2017, boasts a restaurant with some of the best views in town. During colder months, the trails are open to the public, making Rockledge a year-round destination for recreation and relaxation.

As Rockledge enters its second century, it does so with a clear vision and unwavering dedication to quality. “We can’t control the weather,” Helen says. “But we can ensure that every golfer who comes to Rockledge has the best possible experience. That’s our commitment, now and always.”

With its scenic course, top-notch facilities, and exceptional customer service, Rockledge Golf Club remains a jewel in West Hartford, embodying the spirit and tradition of the game while embracing innovation and community.

Safari Travel Awaits

The Owner of The Stamped Passport Travel Co. Offers Expert Advice on African Safari Adventures

Victoria Falls in Zambia

Claudia Dawley, founder of The Stamped Passport Travel Co., a concierge-style travel firm, shares insights on traveling on the African continent and booking a safari vacation.

After graduating college, I knew that I wanted to take some time to experience and immerse myself into a new culture, so I decided to join the Peace Corps. I had always been interested in Sub-Saharan Africa, and knew that was where I wanted to go.

At the time, you were assigned a location to serve based on your skills and the positions they had available and could not pick where you wanted to go. I was assigned to spend the next 27 months in Uganda, and could not have been more excited about my assignment. I spent the first three months in the Peace Corps training and living with a local family in a rural Ugandan village.

I took language lessons to become fluent in Luganda, the local language, and spent the next two years living on my own in a village near Jinja, Uganda. I worked at a clinic and running a grandmother support group for over 120 grandmothers in nearby villages who had lost their adult children to HIV/AIDS and had adopted their grandchildren.

Together with the staff at the clinic I worked hard to ensure the grandmothers had access to health services and school fees for their grandchildren, support for income generating activities, and created a savings and loan program.

A Silverback gorilla in Uganda
Claudia Dawley, founder of The Stamped Passport Travel Co.

I spent a good amount of my free time traveling, not only in Uganda but throughout the African continent as a whole. In all, I was able to spend time in African countries while I was there. Not only did I see the most amazing scenery, but I was also able to go on multiple safaris, which are a great way to view animals in their natural habitat.

I was fortunate to experience safaris where I saw giraffes, elephants, lions, leopards and gazelle in the beautiful African plains. I also went gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. After hours of trekking through the rainforest with our guide, I was able to spend time with a family of gorillas in the wild. Such an unforgettable experience!

There’s really something special about visiting Africa - the people, the landscapes, and the wildlife. It’s a great destination to visit, especially honeymooners or multi-generational family trips. Not only can you go on a safari to view wildlife but you can also take a hot air balloon ride over the African plains, visit local villages, or take a trip to the wine lands in South Africa.

Often, when clients approach me about Africa they’re not quite sure where to start. Do they want to take a river cruise or stay at a luxury safari lodge? There are so many popular locations for a safari such as Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana or South Africa, to name a few. I listen to my clients and really get to know what they are looking for to help narrow down the perfect location for their Safari and their overall travel needs.

Having spent so much time on the continent makes me uniquely qualified to guide travelers seeking a safari experience.

“I use my expertise in the region, combined with my established connections with numerous experts and partners in Africa to curate a seamless and personalized Safari experience.”

I use my expertise in the region, combined with my established connections with numerous experts and partners in Africa to curate a seamless and personalized Safari experience. I take all the stress out of planning the trip from beginning to end, so you can relax and immerse yourself in the heart of Africa!
