Style
Style is such a personal concept, and it seems to mean something different to everyone.
For some, style is about fashion—colors, patterns, and trends. It’s a way to express creativity or make a statement. Others find style in simplicity, choosing minimalist designs and classic cuts, seeing beauty in the understated. For them, style is about balance and elegance.
But style goes beyond appearances. It’s also about the way we move through life—the grace we show in challenges, the kindness we extend to others. Some view style as a form of communication, a way to tell their story without words.
In the end, style is deeply personal, a reflection of our identities. What resonates as stylish to one person might seem out of place to another, and that’s the beauty of it. Style celebrates our uniqueness and the diverse ways we all navigate the world.
We hope this issue inspires you to embrace style in whatever way best suits you!

At MRC Stevenson Oaks, our philosophy is that no matter how old we are or what challenges we live with, life is about continuing to grow. We fight back on thieves like loneliness, helplessness and boredom. We resolve to make every day one that confirms the seven domains of well-being through identity, growth, autonomy, security, connectedness, meaning and joy.

THE SPARKLING WINE BAR RAISING A TOAST TO FORT WORTH
The Coupe is a bubbly addition to South Main Village
ARTICLE BY GABBY CULLEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY MACKA PHOTOGRAPHY
“WE ENJOY BUBBLES WITH EVERYTHING: FRENCH FRIES, PIZZA, POTATO CHIPS, AND POPCORN. WE FELT THAT THE MAJORITY OF FORT WORTH RESTAURANTS ONLY SERVE A SMALL SELECTION OF CHAMPAGNES OR SPARKLING WINES YOU CAN ONLY GET A FEW BY THE GLASS, OR YOU HAVE TO BUY THE WHOLE BOTTLE.”
When you walk into The Coupe, the female-owned sparkling wine bar in the South Main Village district of Fort Worth, you may feel as though you’ve entered a different world. Its Boho-chic vibe is apparent everywhere from the Palm Royale-like decor to the inviting sense that there is no rush; you can take your time and simply… relax.
This is exactly how owners Lauren Badgett & Scott Kimble want you to feel when entering The Coupe. Having just celebrated its first anniversary, this charming slice of paradise has one of, if not the, best sparkling wine menu in Fort Worth. A passion project turned into a thriving neighborhood gathering spot, there’s a reason the charming wine bar attracts patrons from all walks of life: young families, groups of friends, couples, and even businesses looking for a unique venue.
Lauren and Scott are sparkling wine enthusiasts.
“We enjoy bubbles with everything: french fries, pizza, potato chips, and popcorn. We felt that the majority of Fort Worth restaurants only serve a small selection of champagnes or sparkling wines you can only get a few by the glass, or you have to buy the whole bottle. So we thought, why not open a bubble lounge where you can enjoy multiple champagnes and sparkling wines by the glass and not have to buy a whole bottle? We saw a gap, and wanted to fill it,” says Lauren.
As bubbly aficionados, an important aspect of owning a sparkling wine bar for Lauren and Scott was highlighting unique wines customers won’t see at grocery or liquor stores. The list is impressive: it offers sparkling wines from boutique wineries, family, women, and minority-owned labels, and from regions you might not even know make sparkling wines. You’ll see everything from a few fan favorites, a Greek sparkling rosé to a lovely vegan, Argentinian sparkling Malbec, among other labels. “There are some fantastic small sparkling wines you can enjoy without having to break the bank; we’re introducing that to Fort Worth,” says Lauren.
There is no sommelier or mixologist at The Coupe. The wines and cocktails are hand-picked and created by the couple and their staff. “It is really just us. We've educated ourselves and really trained the staff to be competent in what we are offering. Our thought process was to eliminate any intimidation when ordering champagne or sparkling wine, and we wanted to take that pressure off our customers. No one should feel judged about ordering any wine when all everyone wants is to relax and have a good time,” says Lauren.
They also offer red, rosé, and white wines at The Coupe, as well as cocktails made with local Blackland Distillery vodka and gin, Empress Gins, mocktails,
and local beers from breweries such as Rahr & Sons Brewing Company and Panther Island Brewing.
If you want something to nibble on while you enjoy your glass or flight of sparkling wine, The Coupe has plenty of snacks, all created to complement the drink menu. You can order charcuterie boards, popcorn, potato chips, roasted nuts, and a hummus platter. “I would say we’re foodies, but we knew from the beginning we did not want a full kitchen. We are keen on supporting other small local businesses; The Art of Grazing does our charcuterie boards. We also just introduced several flatbreads—the mushroom flatbread pairs quite well with champagne.” If you want more than small plates, you can bring in food or order food to be delivered. “We like to call it a BYOF,” says Scott.
The Coupe has different types of events and special nights, like the last Wednesday of every month, is Comedy at The Coupe—a free show where tips are encouraged for the performers. They will often do
complimentary tastings of new wines brought in, small group tastings, and paid tastings, and anyone can rent the venue for private parties. They’ve done baby showers, bachelorette parties, bridal showers, couples showers, after-wedding parties, birthday parties, and business events. And, The Coupe is a family-friendly and pet-friendly spot. As parents themselves, Lauren and Scott understand parents just need to relax with a glass in hand. Everybody is welcome at this thriving gathering place in South Main Village.
“We knew when we signed the lease in 2021 that we wanted to be a part of this community. Everybody's been so encouraging, helpful, and supportive; I feel like we're all supporting one another; it's been quite humbling. I do feel like it's the girl cave Fort Worth needed,” says Lauren.
What’s next for The Coupe? They’ve got a quarterly bubbles club subscription in the works and will continue to plan special events, and of course, offer some of the best sparkling wine in Fort Worth.
“WE
KNEW WHEN WE SIGNED THE LEASE IN 2021 THAT WE WANTED TO BE A PART OF THIS COMMUNITY. EVERYBODY’S BEEN SO ENCOURAGING, HELPFUL, AND SUPPORTIVE; I FEEL LIKE WE’RE ALL SUPPORTING ONE ANOTHER; IT’S BEEN QUITE HUMBLING.”

A FORT WORTH MAKEUP ARTIST IS BUILDING AN EMPIRE WHILE GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

““It’s such an important charity. I volunteered with them a lot, sometimes helping as an event advocate.”
The pastel world of the Fort Worth beauty and makeup scene is electric, with makeup artists proving more often than other Cowtown creatives why the city is called “Funky Town.”
Among them is local makeup artist Halley Hamer, who has worked with the entertainment and media industries, applying a signature dewy glow to the faces of campaign models and recording artists.
In 2016, she created House of Tesla, a one-stop shop providing makeup services for photoshoots, ads, and special events.
This September, the brand will add Pretty Powerful Co., with a storefront that sells gifts, beauty products, and tools to benefit those quietly dealing with the effects of human trafficking, a growing problem in Fort Worth.
Halley partnered with a local non-profit, The Net Fort Worth and Worthy Co., and its founder, Melissa Ice, to donate part of the store’s revenue

to its many programs supporting trafficking survivors.
She’s worked with The Net before, quickly learning much about the underground industry she describes as a horrible reality.
After launching, she hopes her shop will be an example of pain alchemizing into strength, a righteous redemptive struggle described even in the Bible when good people act in the face of unspeakable evil.
“It’s such an important charity,” she said. “I volunteered with them a lot, sometimes helping as an event advocate. I have provided makeup for survivors and their photoshoots. Trafficking is a problem in Fort Worth, and these survivors need our support. Anyone with a gift or talent and a heart to share it is welcome at The Net.”
The business owner and philanthropist has come a long way in her career, which began as her little sister’s personal makeup artist. She clearly had talent though, and not just in her sister’s eyes,

as friends and extended family also began asking her for help.
So, as a high schooler, Halley matched eye shadow to prom dresses and created soft wedding looks for brides-to-be, a makeup kit dragging behind her as she went from house to house.
“I had to start charging them,” she laughed. “So, I could keep buying the products I used back then.”
The early exposure gave her confidence in her skills and taught her the power of makeup, feeding a passion that became a stable freelance career, including a stint at the Fort Worth Primp Beauty Bar.
Her knowledge increased with every experience, culminating in House of Tesla.
The branding increased her exposure, and soon, she was styling models for popular boot company ads and performers, but the artist still craved more and began developing beauty products.
She struggled with where to start, debating between lashes and lipsticks, when she ultimately, and fortunately, decided on lashes, right as the COVID-19 pandemic hit, imposing face mask ordinances that covered everyone’s mouths.
“I wanted lipstick because I was known for getting women out of their comfort zone,” she recalled. “But lashes turned out to be perfect, allowing women to look ready with minimal makeup, especially with half their face covered.”
The lash line was a hit, quickly growing in popularity and encouraging Halley to produce more.
Today, she boasts a complete beauty line, including her first creation, lashes, a slightly belated range of lipsticks, liners, and foundation.
Halley thinks her next step after establishing Pretty Powerful Co. will include more teaching and education, offering makeup lessons now that help clients use her products with ones they bring from home.
“People can get confused about how to apply a product,” she said. “I’ll have clients bring in their makeup bag and guide them with what they already
own and introduce them to new techniques and products from my line.”
She recently hosted an event at the Amon Carter Museum that challenged her to pick volunteers from the crowd to model makeup styles she applied in real-time from different decades, blending history with artistry.
“I loved it so much,” she said excitedly. “I showed different techniques and gave information on beauty from the 1920s to the 1950s. It was so much fun and allowed me to geek out about beauty history.”
At her core, Halley likes working with people, including collaborations with her peers.
As the Fort Worth beauty industry grows, it can feel intensely competitive, but Halley believes collaboration improves talent overall.
“I learn so much from working with other makeup artists,” she revealed. “I’ve always been a cheerleader for people in the industry and want it to be open for everyone.”
She describes her idols, including Lisa Eldridge, but admits she admires her friends more.
“They may not know they are my idols,” she laughed. “But I lean on them so much for business advice. They are so kind when I have a question. We’ll go out for coffee and discuss what I’m struggling with. They are successful but remain grounded. So, yeah, that inspires me.”
Halley’s belief in women supporting women echoes in her business name.
“Nikola Tesla wasn’t exactly advocating for women’s rights,” she joked. “But in one of his quotes, he says that society keeps women uneducated because the moment we are, we’ll be a force to reckon with and more powerful than the men.”
The quote also appears in her tagline ‘Beauty is Power,” even though Halley’s power seems to come from collaboration, inclusivity, and charity, proving success follows a kind heart, the most beautiful thing of all.

Charlotte WHO IS OLIVIA?
The inspiration for a Fort Worth boutique enjoys dressing up and afternoon prosecco. She’s also a complete fabrication.
ARTICLE BY HANNAH BARRICKS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MACKA PHOTOGRAPHY
In the heart of Fort Worth, fashion has always mattered, but with a newly minted Fashion Week, Cowtown’s creatives have the support they’ve always needed. Geordian Abel, a former sales executive raised with bows in her hair by an acutely Southern mama, dreamed of carving out a corner of that fashion world for the Texas girly girls she identified with.
“I’ve always loved clothes,” she gushed. “It’s a passion of mine, and I haven’t changed. It’s funny because my style now was my style when I was four years old.”
In college, Abel channeled her creativity through a lifestyle blog that slowly defined a style she admits isn’t for everyone but unquestionably belongs in Fort Worth.
Years later, she joined the corporate world as a sales executive but continued working on her blog. It connected Abel to a growing community that supported her, a blessing when she lost her job during company layoffs. In shock, she took her mother’s advice to chase her dreams and focused her energy on the blog, transforming it into an online fashion empire called Flourish in Frills.
Nerve-wracking as it was, she dug deep to forge a path forward; channeling her love of marketing and fashion to create a character called Charlotte Olivia, the embodiment of Abel’s courage and a tool she used to develop a brand.
The sassy Charlotte is always “dressed,” indulges in afternoon champagne, and goes for what she wants. Sound familiar? The character kept Abel focused, influencing her choices like a beacon in a sea of options.
“I told my husband, ‘If we can make this work within six months, then we’ll be good,’” she said. It was about that long, but Flourish was a success with some serendipitous help, but mostly grit driving the business.
She launched the website during the summer of 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic reached America, bringing mandatory quarantines that ruined many small businesses. As people ran inside, they connected to the world from the internet. And boy, did they shop. It didn’t take long before Abel knew she made the right choice keeping Flourish online, bringing chic, feminine fashion to women from the safety of their homes.
One of the cornerstones of Flourish in Frills is its strong sense of community. Abel created a space for her customers to feel seen and heard despite shopping online, something fashion always did for her.
“Connecting with our customers is really the forefront of my business,” she said.
Hers is a personal approach, where her customers feel like they know her and vice versa. This philosophy extends to her social media presence, where she strives to create an engaging and interactive experience for her followers.
“Instagram is our bread and butter,” she explained, describing a carefully curated platform that Charlotte Olivia would be obsessed with.
Soon, though, she needed help, forcing Abel to delegate as she built a small but dedicated team that still helps her run things smoothly. Each team member plays a crucial role in the boutique’s success, but Abel says she will always manage the customers and build relationships with them through the website.
“I think that’s something people don’t realize,” Abel said. “I know every customer’s style and preferences, so when I’m selecting pieces for the store, I have a clear idea who it’s for.”
Flourish in Frills will always be a love letter to the girly girls, a haven that mixes elevated maxi dresses with timeless closet staples.
“When it comes to clothes, the girlier and frillier, the better,” she laughed, sharing that her quest to find pieces for Charlotte led her to explore design. Like her boutique items, Abel wanted to create pieces her customers could recognize instantly as belonging to the Flourish in Frills brand.
“I really hate the word boutique because I think anyone can be a boutique,” she continued. “But how are you going to establish yourself as a brand?”
In June 2023, Flourish launched its first custom collection, beginning a new chapter for Abel. Despite having no formal background in design, she embraced the challenge, working closely with manufacturers to bring her vision to life.
“The long-term goal is selling our pieces,” she explained, adding that the design aspect gives her a new creative outlet to explore, something most artists crave.
But, the design world is not without challenges, and Abel shares that she learned valuable lessons from her first collection. No surprise, she leaned heavily into ultra-feminine styles.
“I went too girly, honestly,” she giggled. “There weren’t enough practical everyday pieces.”
The “setback” was only a learning experience for Abel, who used the information as another piece of data to help build her brand. Today, she feels she has struck a balance between the signature style of Charlotte Olivia and a busy mom who needs everyday, versatile pieces that still make

her feel “dressed.” She says the balance will influence future collections, with the next one already in the works, but she is firm about not rushing the process.
“I really want to take my time with every detail,” she explained. “I hate speeding something up just to get it done. I’m moving at a pace that makes sense to me, so when it’s finished, I know it’s perfect.”
As Flourish in Frills continues growing, Abel envisions a future where her boutique thrives online while expanding into various brick-and-mortar spaces.
“The long-term goal is to be a wholesale brand and have our designs in other boutiques,” she shared, adding that she couldn’t do any of it without her loyal customers and the support of a city she loves.
“I want people to know they can always follow their dreams,” she concluded. “Like my mother told me, you can do it. I wish I had started this brand years ago, but it’s also never too late. Believe in yourself, and you can make it happen.”
