The Men’s Issue
Two phone calls, back to back, from my wife. Something is wrong. When I answer the phone, I hear panic in her voice. In the few breaths before she can explain what has happened, my heart races, and my mind goes to dark places. Weirdly, there is almost a sense of relief when I realize the cause of her panic is that our 2-year-old boy has simply broken his arm. My mind was wrongfully worrying about much worse scenarios when answering the phone. During those dark worries, so much of life was instantly prioritized. Every other “problem” I had quickly vanished, and I was instantly reminded of what is truly important.
Spending time with my loved ones is my top priority. Oddly, that may not always be evident in the way I live. Like so many, I think about people but don’t call them. I talk about getting together with friends, but don’t schedule it. I say I should take my kids to see their great-grandparents, but don’t take the trip. If the saying “you make time for what is important to you” is true, what does that say about my priorities? If I don’t do the things I say are important to me, what does that teach my sons?
Of all that I hope to teach my boys, taking action on the things they find important has to be toward the top of the list. It is easy to talk about all of the things we believe and think matter most, but unless we act on these things, they are just words that sound nice.
Having a father who teaches not just by speaking, but rather by doing, has been one of the biggest blessings of my life. If there has ever been “a man of action,” it is him. Of the convictions he acts on, being with family tops them all. “Put it on the calendar” is something he says anytime someone mentions a family gathering of any kind. This simple saying has facilitated more time with loved ones than would seem reasonably feasible.
My prayer for myself and anyone who sees this letter is that our actions line up with our beliefs. May we always remember what is truly important in our lives and prioritize that each day. One simple action to help get us started may be to “put it on the calendar.”

NAME SOMEONE YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH AND LEARN FROM; WHO IS IT AND WHY?
“I’d say either author Ryan Holiday or author Bob Goff. I love great stories, and both do it so well. Ryan Holiday authored one of my favorite books, The Obstacle Is The Way. Most of his work references stoic philosophy, and he has a ton of knowledge to share in navigating the day-to-day obstacles and triumphs. Bob Goff, on the other hand, is a guy with more stories, laughs, and wisdom to share than anyone I know. I’ve been fortunate to talk with him on multiple occasions but still feel I’d have much to learn from him—specifically about dreaming up big ideas and letting God show up and take the lead.”
WHERE IN FORT WORTH WOULD YOU WANT TO MEET AND WHY?
“My ‘go-to spots’ are either Cherry Coffee or Press Café. My wife and I are pretty low-key, and it really depends on the occasion. We love a great cup of coffee, plus the coffee house vibe. We lived near Cherry Coffee for a while, so this was our spot for a great Cortado. If the weather is nice and the boys (my three wild and crazy sons who I love like crazy) need to eat and be outside at the same time, we’d head to Press Café. The outdoor patio seating, open green space, and consistently great food check every box.”
IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE MEAL WITH THE YOUNGER VERSION OF YOURSELF, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM?
“I would look my younger self straight in the eyes and tell him not to take life or himself/myself too seriously. As I’ve now reached the other side of 40, with more gray hair than I thought I’d have at this point, I’ve grown to appreciate that hard work and building a life and business are all wonderful things, but not at the expense of missing the joy and fun that goes with it. Every moment really is a blessing, and it’s right in front of you/me. Don’t miss it.”
IF YOU COULD BECOME A GO-TO EXPERT IN ANY FIELD OUTSIDE YOUR CURRENT PROFESSION, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
“Without a doubt, I’d become an expert in the hospitality and food industry. I genuinely enjoy making people feel seen, heard, and welcomed into a space, whether my home or office. Also, I love all things food (eating it and making it). Eating great food while hanging out with new and old friends… seems like a winning combo.”
NAME SOMEONE YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH AND LEARN FROM; WHO IS IT AND WHY?
“I would have loved to have dinner with the late Ivo Pitanguy. He pioneered many facets of cosmetic plastic surgery and used his skills to reconstruct the less fortunate. He built a world-renowned clinic and was a global destination for plastic surgery! His secret sauce for innovation would be a big topic of discussion.”
WHERE IN FORT WORTH WOULD YOU WANT TO MEET AND WHY?
“I would definitely take anyone from out of town to the Stockyards and the revamped Mule Alley. My family and I love going to Paloma Suerte for amazing Mexican food and frozen margaritas.

We could then walk to the nearby Drover Hotel patio and get the bulk of our meeting down while watching the sunset and sampling great tequila!”
IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE MEAL WITH THE YOUNGER VERSION OF YOURSELF, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM?
“1. Live life to the fullest without regrets. 2. The only things worth having in life result from hard work and perseverance. 3. Your way isn’t always the best; never stop learning. 4. It would’ve been a tough sell because my younger self knew everything already, but I’d try to tell him to wear sunscreen!”
IF YOU COULD BECOME A GO-TO EXPERT IN ANY FIELD OUTSIDE YOUR CURRENT PROFESSION, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
“I would love to be an expert team roping heeler. When everything goes right, it’s like a perfectly executed symphony. It requires 360-degree expertise from horse training, riding, and roping with a dash of good luck. In my opinion, they deserve contracts equivalent to other world champions. Or—I would love to have my own fabrication shop someday. Specifically, I’d love to weld and create larger-than-life metal sculptures. The artistic hands and skills needed for plastic surgery would lend themselves well to sculpture fabrication.”

“Sam Houston – We would talk over a steak! Leadership and risk have made many men heroes. I would enjoy speaking with him about his life, the direction it took, and how he felt after the Alamo defeat. He was a huge part of Texas history, a man of vision and courage who was a Mason and Knight Templar.”
WHERE IN FORT WORTH WOULD YOU WANT TO MEET AND WHY?
“Cattlemen’s Steak House. It’s iconic to Fort Worth and Western Heritage.”
IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE MEAL WITH THE YOUNGER VERSION OF YOURSELF, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM?
“To not stress or worry about anything. Everything works out. Career – Family – Friends – Life itself. So, live every day like it’s your last.”
IF YOU COULD BECOME A GO-TO EXPERT IN ANY FIELD OUTSIDE YOUR CURRENT PROFESSION, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
“A defense attorney – to help those who can’t help themselves. To defend the defenseless and protect those with no voice due to funds, confidence, or lack of understanding. I am competitive, so I would have a perfect record!”

“Since I was young, I have always learned the most important information from my father, which remains true today. So, I should call him soon to schedule a dinner.”
WHERE IN FORT WORTH WOULD YOU WANT TO MEET AND WHY?
“The most special place in my life downtown is my fitness center, which creates happiness in those who come across it. So, if I were to meet someone anywhere, it would be Vigor Active, as it would make for a lighthearted, healthy meeting.
IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE MEAL WITH THE YOUNGER VERSION OF YOURSELF, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM?
“You’ve always listened to your heart, and following your heart has never steered you wrong. You are doing the right things. Keep praying, listening, and doing right by everyone you meet.”
IF YOU COULD BECOME A GO-TO EXPERT IN ANY FIELD OUTSIDE YOUR CURRENT PROFESSION, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
“Car design and development. My 7-year-old son has opened my eyes to the joy of cars, his passion.”

NAME SOMEONE YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH AND LEARN FROM; WHO IS IT AND WHY?
“My late grandfather, Cleo Nipper. He was my grandfather on my mother’s side of the family. Like my father, he was also a banker, serving as the Chairman and President of State National Bank in Iowa Park, TX. ‘Papa Cleo’ passed away in 1981, about a year before I was born, so I never had the opportunity to know him. It would mean the world to me to break bread and have an Old Fashioned or two with him.”
WHERE IN FORT WORTH WOULD YOU WANT TO MEET AND WHY?
“Without a doubt, Lonesome Dove Western Bistro in Fort Worth’s historic Stockyards. I’ve had countless dinners with family, friends, and clients at the restaurant over the years. Knowing ‘Papa Cleo’ was an avid outdoorsman and fellow banker, Lonesome Dove would be the perfect setting.”
IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE MEAL WITH THE YOUNGER VERSION OF YOURSELF, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM?
“As my father always told me, ‘If it were easy, everyone would do it.’ That was fantastic advice, but I would certainly take
it further. Getting out of your comfort zone is key. Success comes with grit, hard work, and the willingness to try new things in business, which you will experience failure at some point. Failure builds the courage to do it again and ultimately get it right.”
IF YOU COULD BECOME A GO-TO EXPERT IN ANY FIELD OUTSIDE YOUR CURRENT PROFESSION, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
“I have been passionate about cooking my whole life. The jury is still out on my overall skill set in the kitchen, but I truly love it. I would want to be a culinary expert in American cuisine. There is nothing better than making people happy with fantastic food.”

“That would be Jesus. I want to recline with him for a while with nobody else around. First, I would like to thank him for all the blessings in my life. Then, I would like to know how he kept going through 33 years of ministry with so many people wanting him dead, as well as dealing with people who hated him only for loving people.”
WHERE IN FORT WORTH WOULD YOU WANT TO MEET AND WHY?
“Wilde’s Cigar Shop in Burleson. I am a member and like to spend time there working and thinking in peace.”
IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE MEAL WITH THE YOUNGER VERSION OF YOURSELF, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM?
“Circumstances constantly change, and nothing good or bad stays the same. I would tell myself to trust in the Lord’s plan and know that no matter what, everything works out in the end. Also, I would remind myself to never take relationships for granted. One day, I will see everyone
I love for the last time, so I should always try to leave them in peace, grace, and love as long as it depends on me.”
IF YOU COULD BECOME A GO-TO EXPERT IN ANY FIELD OUTSIDE YOUR CURRENT PROFESSION, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
“That’s a tough one. I’m also passionate about dogs, personal protection, and preparedness. I have always regretted not acquiring a degree and would love to be a flight medic.”
NAME SOMEONE YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH AND LEARN FROM; WHO IS IT AND WHY?
“If I could have dinner with anyone, it would be Warren Buffett. Most people in my role would love to learn from one of the greatest investors, but his lessons are much more than financial. He has a wealth of knowledge about running multiple highly successful businesses. He has also had several spectacular failures to learn from. Warren had a 60+ year partnership with another investment titan, Charlie Munger that taught him innumerable lessons. He has given away more than $55 billion to various charities and has pledged to give away 99% of his accumulated wealth. I want to learn from someone willing to give away so much.”
WHERE IN FORT WORTH WOULD YOU WANT TO MEET AND WHY?
“I would want to meet in the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. I’ve always felt a sense of peace there, unlike anywhere else. Time slows down, and I can reflect. Being in the Garden can make me feel like I’m in a new place where the bustle of everyday life evaporates. Any serious conversation worth having should be in the Botanic Garden.”

IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE MEAL WITH THE YOUNGER VERSION OF YOURSELF, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM?
“I would advise my younger self to do more things I’m passionate about and spend less time doing things that won’t matter tomorrow or even in a year. When you hit the point of running a practice and taking care of children, then you will understand what it’s like to be busy. Don’t be afraid to take calculated risks. Sticking with something just because it is comfortable is not a good enough reason. Read everything. Don’t get complacent while learning. It has served us well and will continue to do so for the rest of our lives. Lastly, don’t stop exercising. Beginning again is much more difficult than maintaining momentum, especially in your forties.”
IF YOU COULD BECOME A GO-TO EXPERT IN ANY FIELD OUTSIDE YOUR CURRENT PROFESSION, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
“I’ve spent most of my time and effort in mathematics, science, computers, finance, and almost anything considered ‘left-brain.’ I want to give the other side some love, too, so I’d love to be an expert at playing piano. Music, like mathematics, transcends language barriers. Music can elicit emotions, recall long-dormant memories, give flashes of brilliance, or compel you to move. I would play the piano because it is so versatile and used in many music genres. I want to be able to share this gift with as many people as possible because of the joy and hope that music can bring.”

AN OUTDOOR SPACE IN WALSH RANCH BECOMES A YEAR-ROUND RETREAT
Texas is a backyard state. A well-curated outdoor space isn’t appreciated everywhere, but it’s a prerequisite here, where Texans know sweet tea tastes best from their back porches in the summer. So, where should Cowtown’s homeowners turn to between contractors, online tutorials, and Fort Worth’s many wholesale distributors once they decide they’re ready for some changes? Depending on

the design, DIY mistakes can be costly and time-consuming, reserved for the bravest or most experienced weekend warriors. For those interested in outsourcing the work to a trusted professional, few companies have a reputation that rivals The Complete Backyard. The North Texas-based designand-build company focuses on helping customers create their dream backyards— with an impressive portfolio that includes casitas, outdoor kitchens and patios, simple pools and spas, or, their favorite, combining multiple elements into the ultimate staycation backyard resort.
As a family-owned business with over 30 years of combined experience, the
staff and craftsman behind The Complete Backyard are known for their integrity, taking a personalized approach to each project. Their goal? To design spaces that are functional and beautiful.
RJ McNett, a designer at the firm, is particularly fond of a project they took on in Fort Worth’s upscale Walsh Ranch community, where the space’s challenges yielded beautiful results.
“It was memorable because of the yard’s elevation challenges,” McNett says. “The clients wanted a state-of-the-art pool, with lighting a top priority. They also wanted a space they could use year-round. Our team loves a good challenge and
“OUR TEAM LOVES A GOOD CHALLENGE AND ENJOYS WORKING WITH CLIENTS WHO DREAM BIG —THIS WAS DEFINITELY FUN.”
enjoys working with clients who dream big—this was definitely fun.”
The homeowners came to The Complete Backyard with a clear vision: a modern, fully illuminated poolscape that would serve as both a showpiece and a sanctuary. However, the elevation issues created construction challenges, and the budget required strategic planning.
“One of the main opportunities here was working creatively within their budget to ensure they got exactly what they wanted,” McNett explains. “Our goal is the client’s happiness not just now, but for the long run.”
To do that, the team relies on collaboration during the design process. Every
project starts with an in-person consultation at the client’s home to assess the space, discuss goals, and take precise measurements. Then, using state-of-theart 3D rendering software, they present clients with a vivid, realistic view of what the finished backyard will look like to avoid wasting time and money.
“We got creative, held multiple design meetings, and used our 3D rendering software to give them a clear visual of what their backyard would look like,” McNett says. “This ensured the design matched their vision before we broke ground.”
As the project progressed, lighting became the crown jewel of the design.
“This backyard includes multiple standout lighting features—lighted laminars, colored vision bubblers, multiple in-pool lights, and a lighted waterfall,” McNett says. “Lighting was a huge focus of the design.”
But the innovation didn’t stop there. The team incorporated sleek lines and angles to satisfy the owner’s modern taste.
“We followed a modernist approach from the beginning because that’s what the client wanted—from the shape of the pool to the spa layout, we design for each client’s taste, whatever they like,” McNett says. “We used travertine for coping and decking to create a seamless, cohesive color scheme.”
From the first design sketch to the final polish, the project took just four months— an impressive timeline considering the complexity of the terrain and the level of customization involved.
“The client was extremely pleased and has generously offered to use his backyard as a showcase for our work,” McNett notes. “He’s even welcomed potential clients to visit his home and has referred several to us as their builder.”
The team at The Complete Backyard says customer satisfaction drives them. Their approach relies on building trust with clients to ensure they get what they want and enjoy the experience of creating it.
The company’s dedication to detail, from initial concept to long-term support, sets it apart. They also offer in-house warranty services to resolve issues with completed projects quickly and efficiently.
“We hold ourselves and every partner to a high standard to ensure your backyard is beautiful and long-lasting,” McNett explains.
Their focus on quality and eye for aesthetics and functionality makes them a rising resource for luxury outdoor living. And while trends may come and go, they’re seeing a strong return to sleek, geometric designs in pools and modern outdoor spaces but say they like it all.
“Sleeker designs are trending overall,” McNett says. “We create beautiful, sustainable, and easyto-maintain spaces using aesthetically pleasing materials and advanced functional products.”
The Walsh Ranch project is a testament to that mission—a blend of creativity, technical expertise, and client-focused collaboration that turned a challenging backyard into a glowing, year-round escape where life happens beautifully.
And thanks to the dedication of The Complete Backyard team, one Walsh Ranch homeowner brought his glowing outdoor space to life—one laminar at a time.

HEIM BBQ SLOWS THINGS DOWN FOR AN IMPROVED CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
ARTICLE BY HANNAH BARRICKS
WHAT’S YOUR HURRY?
In a city that takes meat seriously, Heim BBQ has carved out a space all its own. From its humble beginnings as a food truck off South Main to multiple brick-and-mortar locations, including one off the Trinity River, with cold beer reliably on tap and an ever-growing fan base, Heim seems perfectly poised to become Fort Worth's hottest summer hangout. Successful BBQ restaurants discourage lingering, though, churning out tables as quickly as possible when one brisket takes 18 hours to smoke. So, Heim
reinvented the wheel, aiming for a customer-focused model its patrons deserved. After all, "Heim" is German for "home," and no one goes hungry at home.
"Travis and Emma Heim started the restaurant in a food truck, and we were the initial investors," says Will Churchill, who helped the Heims transition into the restaurant concept it is today. "Once they decided they wanted a brick and mortar, we first partnered with them on Magnolia."
Since then, Heim added the River District and Dallas locations (with a Weatherford spot opening soon).
"We worked hard at our river location," he explains. "We just spent over $300,000 in the backyard. We put in fire pits and artificial turf and turned our original food truck into a bar."
They strategically designed the river location for customers to enjoy.
"BBQ places sell out," Churchill says. "So, they weren't designed for sitting, lingering, and enjoying yourself. We want people to feel at home."
The home-like comforts include plush leather seating, bar games and TVs.
"It's not a full-on sports bar with TVs on every wall," he clarifies. "But there are enough to make Heim your spot to watch a game."
And that spot wouldn't be complete without drinks that rise above the usual draft list. "We brought on a director of alcohol to have consistency across our bars," Churchill says. "We are leaning into some craft cocktails and cocktails that are on the trendier side. Most BBQ restaurants will serve you a cold beer and a generic drink. And we are upping our wine program a little bit."
Wine is an unusual pairing with smoked meats, but it might be the key to Heim's customer-focused dining approach.
"If the boyfriend or husband says he wants to go to Heim, the last thing we want is the significant other saying, 'There's nothing there for me,'" Churchill says. "We're trying to make it so the
“We worked hard at our river location. We put in fire pits and artificial turf and turned our original food truck into a bar”
kids want to go, the guys want to go, and the ladies want to go for dinner."
But Heim knows its core audience will always be men who enjoy eating the food and learning techniques that improve their home attempts.
"It's easy to think of a BBQ restaurant as a place for men," says Churchill. "It's heavy protein and all prime beef. No one's coming to Heim because they're on a diet; it's a treat."
From private parties to whiskey dinners and BBQ classes, Heim partners with local businesses to elevate the experience further.
And for those playing pitmaster at home? Heim's smokehouse tours are a bespoke, spontaneous experience.
"If a group asks, we'll give them a tour, but we don't have them at a set time," Churchill says. "The tour is an excellent education, and people's questions are fascinating. You can tell if they smoke at home."
From private parties to whiskey dinners and BBQ classes, Heim partners with local businesses to elevate the experience further.
"We did a really high-end wine dinner… we've done a whiskey and BBQ dinner pairing… we do BBQ classes where you come and learn how to cook the brisket, 'BBQ 101.'"
And in perfect timing for the summer, Heim is turning up the heat—literally—with its new spicy BBQ sauce line.
"We were working on one with scorpion pepper that launched on May 1," Churchill says. "We will start at a level 0 or 1, a sweet and spicy sauce, and, from there, go up to a level 4, which you'll have to sign a waiver to try."
In other words, patrons can challenge their friends to a hot sauce showdown, watch the game, throw back a cold beer, and eat brisket that (almost!) never sells out at Heim. So, whether you're trying to learn from fellow pit masters or need a place to unwind with the guys, Heim BBQ delivers on all fronts. And with more locations on the horizon, this home-grown hangout is just getting started.

FRANK KENT CADILLAC USHERS IN A NEW ERA FOR FORT WORTH DRIVERS
For more than 90 years, Frank Kent has been a cornerstone of Fort Worth’s automotive scene—a name synonymous with quality, customer care, and innovation. The dealership has never stood still from its early days downtown to its state-of-the-art showrooms in Fort Worth and Arlington today. And now, Frank Kent is embracing the electric future with the same forward-thinking spirit that made it a household name.
“We’ve taken extensive steps to be committed to the Cadillac brand,” says Aaron Hoernke on behalf of Frank Kent. “That includes bringing in the all-new Brand Image and ensuring we have the EV infrastructure for our clients.”

SUMMER GRILL RECIPES
ARTICLE BY KATIE BOBROW
THESE DELICIOUS RECIPES ARE LIGHT, BRIGHT AND FEEL LIKE SUMMER
The sun has returned, and grilling season is upon us. With the nice weather comes vegetable gardens and fresh produce, along with the overwhelming desire to be outside as much as possible. We’ve compiled some fresh and light dishes that you can shop for at your local farmers market and whether you’re looking for a quick mid-week meal or something to grill for a crowd on the weekend these dishes won’t disappoint. These pair well together or can stand on their own!
INGREDIENTS:
• 2lbs. Outside skirt steak*
• 2 Tablespoons lime*
• 2 Tablespoons finely, chopped cilantro
• ¼ Cup olive oil or avocado oil
• ¼ White onion, finely chopped
• 1 Tablespoon cumin
• Salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS:
1. Place skirt steak into gallon freezer bag
2. Combine all other ingredients in bowl and mix. Pour over steak and marinate for 3-4 hours or overnight in the fridge.
3. Bring skirt steak to room temperature by letting it sit out for one hour.
4. Get your grill hot on one side and medium on the other.
SIMPLE SKIRT STEAK
5. Once the grill is ready, wipe excess marinade off steak. Starting on the hot side, place skirt steak on grill for 2 minutes per side, attaining a nice sear.
6. Transfer steak to the cooler side of grill and cook until the internal temp is 130°. Let rest for 10 minutes (temp will rise while resting).
7. Carve and serve. This dish pairs well with beans and rice or served as tacos. Following is a chimichurri sauce that compliments it nicely.
*Outside skirt steak is a more tender cut than inside skirt steak, for this recipe outside skirt is recommended. Do not use too much lime as the citrus can cook the meat before putting it on the grill, resulting in a tougher texture.

Just be sure to take it out and get it to room temp before you serve it, as olive oil hardens in the fridge. Serve over skirt steak or tacos.
