July 2024
PUBLISHER
July is our Explore issue! As a family with two small boys the word explore is something Hunter and I talk about often. It’s important to us that our boys get to have adventures all throughout their childhood. Before our first son was born I read the book “Wild at Heart” by Brett Eldredge. This book completely changed my perspective on how I wanted us to raise our boys. This book enlightened me on how God created boys and men to be adventurous, outdoors, using their hands to make and create things. As I read this book I quickly realized that in order for my boys to be raised in a home where those things were happening I was going to have to get out of my comfort zone.
Our latest adventure (which got me completely out of my comfort zone) was camping. We had discussed going for a long time, but the plan often fell through, which secretly relieved me. Sleeping outside in a tent, surrounded by bugs and dirt, didn’t seem particularly appealing. However, it quickly turned into one of my favorite memories. Getting to see the excitement of our oldest son was worth everything to me. He truly came alive getting to be outside for two straight days, playing in the dirt, roasting marshmallows by the campfire, picking up bugs and sticks, and sleeping in a tent (which I think was his favorite part). All my apprehensions quickly faded when I realized the positive impact that getting out of my comfort zone had on our boys.
I desire to always inspire our boys to get out and explore. Hopefully, our camping story encourages you to do a little exploring too. Whether it’s trying a new sport, picking up a new hobby, or taking a trip you’ve always dreamed of, I hope you go for it! Stepping out of our comfort zone often leads to unexpected joy. By embracing new experiences and challenges, we discover passions, build resilience, and create lasting memories. This journey of growth not only enriches our lives but also inspires those around us, cultivating a shared sense of adventure and fulfillment.
Since having kids, I’ve realized time isn’t slowing down, so my hope for all of us this summer is to make the most of it and get a little uncomfortable.

GENERATIONAL TRAVEL IS STILL A THING— AND IT’S FUN FOR EVERYONE
Travel advisor Angie Herdman shares all the details.
ARTICLE BY GABBY CULLEN
If you want to make memories with family, a good vacation checks all the right boxes. You can experience a place you’ve never been or return to a well-loved destination. It’s planning activities that you might not normally do, trying new foods, seeing landmarks you’ve only read about, or doing a whole lot of nothing and being perfectly happy. And, while travel continues to be on the upswing, one trend has gained a lot of popularity in recent years and shows no signs of slowing—generational travel.
We spoke with travel advisor Angie Herdman of Intentional Itineraries to get the ins and outs of a trip with extended family, why it’s popular, and some of the best places to go with everyone in tow.
Whether families are heading to an all-inclusive in the Yucatan Peninsula or are having a travel expert like Herdman help them plan a trip to Europe, the consistent factor is a desire for quality time. “A major trend right now is getting grandparents, their children, and their children's children all together just to spend more time together and do something active that makes memories. People want to focus more on time these days—on memories that last forever—instead of gifts that will fade away,” she says.
A big part of generational travel is figuring out a location that’ll work for everyone, Herdman advises. “It’s about matching the group with the
experiences they want to have. So I ask a lot of questions: Why do you travel? What's the best vacation you've ever been on? What was it about that vacation wouldn't didn't do like, you know, what do you like to do as a family in your free time?” she says.
If having everything at your fingertips sounds appealing, Herdman recommends looking for an all-inclusive that caters to large groups. “A beach resort like the Grand Velas is geared towards the multigen group. Families can book large villas with room for everyone, and the daily calendar is filled with things to do. They've got activities at night; they've got activities during the day like painting sandcastle building trivia, and crafts, and they just remodeled their kid’ and teen clubs. And the food is amazing there,” she says.
Regarding adventure travel, Costa Rica has seen an uptick in vacationers in the past years. Herdman says places like El Silencio Lodge Costa Rica, where you can zipline, enjoy waterfall repelling, take a horseback ride through the rain forest or by an active volcano, and go white water rafting are very popular.
Another type of generational travel Herdman has consistently planned for clients is educational and cultural trips. “In Ireland, there are some really neat things that you can do program-wise. You can meet with a genealogist before you travel and they create a package and take you to where your ancestors lived. They might find long-lost cousins or different little villages to travel to that bring your family history to life,” she says.
In Italy, Herdman has found cooking classes and fresco painting sessions, and once she arranged a goat farm tour and cheese-making class in France for a family with little ones. “Anything hands-on that the family can do together is ideal. You don’t want to separate too much because it defeats the purpose of traveling together,” she explains.
In Herdman’s opinion, there’s no sign of generational travel slowing down. “It's fun to see grandchildren see their grandparents travel and be able to introduce new places and new experiences. And for grandparents to see what it's like in their grandkids' lives now. It also gives the parents in the middle a little break, to relax”

Brings Oahu’s North Shore LOCAL RESTAURANT TO DFW
The fast-casual dining spot blends unique cuisine with a laid-back vibe.
ARTICLE BY GABBY CULLEN
If you find yourself on Oahu’s North Shore, you might be drawn to the food trucks parked along Kamehameha Highway. You won’t be able to ignore the lines of people waiting to order and devour what has become a major draw for tourists and locals alike—shrimp. Starting with Giovanni’s in 1993, each truck has a variation of garlic shrimp so good, that you might consider making a day of it and trying a bite from each one.
If you don’t have plans to be in Hawaii anytime soon, you’re in luck. Coco Shrimp, a locally owned fast-casual restaurant with several locations in and around Fort Worth and the rest of the metroplex, has brought the iconic island concept to the mainland, and yes, it started in a food truck.
Isaac Hadley grew up in Fort Worth and during the four years he attended BYUHawaii, he fell in love with not only the island but the food and the importance it plays in local culture. Upon returning to Fort Worth, he and his wife Lauren saved their money, built their first food truck, and showed up at local events with shrimp recipes created and perfected in a home kitchen.
Through rewarding but hard work, the Coco Shrimp food truck found massive success, and a year or so after it first rolled onto the scene, Isaac’s brother-in-law and sister moved from California to help with the business. From there, things only got busier, and it was in 2019 the group decided to open up a brick-and-mortar location on Bryan Ave. in downtown Fort Worth. “When they opened the restaurant, it was just a much better experience. They could serve more shrimp, and the wait times were not as bad, but it was just as popular,” says Coco Shrimp Marketing and Social Media Manager Trevor Carver.
The second Coco Shrimp opened on Heritage Trace Blvd. in North Fort Worth in 2021, and things have taken off since then. “Everybody loves it. There aren’t a lot of unique restaurants in Fort Worth. It’s something that’s not a burger, BBQ, or Mexican food,” says Carver. Their third and fourth locations are in Watauga and Denton, respectively, and in the past couple of years, locations have opened in Keller, Richardson, and Plano.
What makes Coco Shrimp so unique? It’s something different than what you might expect when of Hawaiian cuisine. And the vibe of each restaurant is infused with Polynesian culture “The owners wanted to bring the island vibe to Texas. It's an experience eating at any of the locations—each one is a bit different. They don't copy and paste the formula,” says Carver. You’ll find hand-painted murals in each location and a casual atmosphere that makes dining out enjoyable for everyone.
The offerings are simple, but the flavors are complex and tasty. There are five shrimp plates—the iconic coconut shrimp, garlic butter shrimp, sweet and spicy shrimp, spicy shrimp, and lemon herb. You can order a plate of six shrimp accompanied by a serving of rice drizzled with garlic butter and a side salad, or opt for the sampler platter, which is three styles of shrimp (the best way to try a little bit of everything).
The new and very popular Coco Tacos are served on a bed of rice and topped with fresh lettuce, a sweet chili sauce, and house-made cilantro lime dressing. They even have a fun mini plate for kids with three shrimp of their choice, just enough rice and salad, and a small drink.
“I always refer to it as the In n Out of shrimp because you can make little combos and add on a few things, but it’s very simple—we don’t try to complicate it,” says Carver.
Keeping it simple has paid off for the founders of Coco Shrimp. A College Station location has a Fall 2024 opening, and after that, they hope to expand into Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. And while they have plans to expand even further down the line, they strive to make each location special. “We make people happy every time we serve up a plate. We’re presenting them with a meal they love. Either they’ve heard good things or they’ve tried and they’re back for more,” says Carver.
At MRC Stevenson Oaks, our philosophy is that no matter how old we are or what challenges we live with, life is about continuing to grow. We fight back on thieves like loneliness, helplessness and boredom. We resolve to make every day one that confirms the seven domains of well-being through identity, growth, autonomy, security, connectedness, meaning and joy.
“Moving to Stevenson Oaks, or any community center, was something I never considered until my husband died. I watched this being built and I thought, that is where I want to go. I’m still in my same neighborhood and I’m happy.”

Perfecting Your Golf Swing
ARTICLE BY DANIEL SCHOWENGERDT
Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.
Get fit for equipment.
01.
If you are buying clubs off the rack, you aren’t giving yourself the best chance for success. Golf technology is evolving every year, and although you don’t need to buy a new driver each year, if you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip. The clubs don’t swing themselves, so don’t neglect instruction and practice, but getting the right equipment is a vital piece of the puzzle.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. Generally, a $300 driver has a low-grade $15 shaft that you should change. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.
Get good golf instruction, REGULARLY.
02.
We’ve all heard someone say, “I should get a lesson sometime.” To be effective, you need regular lessons from a PGA certified pro, not just one lesson. Getting quality instruction from the same instructor can turn slices into draws and give you the confidence to play with anyone on any course. Years ago, golf instructors started instruction with chipping and putting and then graduated to the driver. Now, instructors have been pressured to start with the driver because we all want to outdrive our friends. Resist that temptation! Get instruction on your short game and irons first. My friend regularly outdrives me by 50 yards, but my ball is in the hole first most of the time because of my training and practice on the short game.
Read quality golf books for a higher golf IQ.
03.
There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads: Short game: Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz
Mental game: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella Mechanics: Practical Golf by John Jacobs
Ball flight laws: The Practice Manual by Adam Young (only read the first 50 pages)
Practice your short game every day.
04.
You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.
Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.
Instructors have been pressured to start with the driver because we all want to outdrive our friends. Resist that temptation! Get instruction on your short game and irons first.
Position the ball in the back of your stance, just inside your back ankle. This will help avoid hitting it thin. That ball position will also help you hit the ball with a descending blow, and as Dave Pelz says, “hit the little ball (golf ball) before the big ball (the earth).”
Turn your feet 30 degrees toward the target and have 70% of your weight on your front foot which also promotes the descending blow.
Use a putting stroke to hit the ball. That’s right—do not use your hands or wrists for power. Using a putting stroke just off the green will create consistency and clean contact.
Don’t take the club back very far (depending on the length of the shot) and make sure your follow-through is 20% further than your backswing. This will ensure accelerating through the ball.
Use the right club. I use anything from a 9 iron to 60-degree wedge for this shot. Use a 9 iron or wedge when you need the ball to roll further once it hits the green, and use a more lofted club for less roll. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
If you perfect this shot, you’ll be chipping in and getting up and down much more often.

The Island of Missing Trees
BY ELIF SHAFAIT
It is 1974 on the island of Cyprus. Two teenagers, from opposite sides of a divided land, meet at a tavern in the city they both call home. The tavern is the only place that Kostas, who is Greek and Christian, and Defne, who is Turkish and Muslim, can meet, in secret, hidden beneath the blackened beams from which hang garlands of garlic, chili peppers and wild herbs. This is where one can find the best food in town, the best music, the best wine. But there is something else to the place: it makes one forget, even if for just a few hours, the world outside and its immoderate sorrows.

EMERALD BRIDAL’S STYLE GUIDE FOR PICKING THE PERFECT GOWN.
Walking into Emerald Bridal, you immediately sense the magic of what it means to find the perfect wedding dress. The walls are lined with gowns, and the prospect of choosing one is exhilarating and overwhelming at the same time. Sabina Yochum, owner of Emerald Bridal, sits down to share her insights on the art of choosing the right gown and breaks down four popular styles and who should wear them.
With four years in the bridal business, Yochum brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for helping brides navigate their journey. Her path to the bridal industry was guided by her love for romance and the chaos of wedding planning.
“I romanticize everything in my life,” she admits with a laugh. “After planning my own wedding, I realized I loved the process and wanted to help others navigate their own.”
She explains that the process of picking the perfect wedding dress involves a mix of intuition and expertise, often pulling dresses that might be outside a bride’s comfort zone to reveal unexpected preferences.
“We always start by understanding what the bride envisions,” she says. “Even if nine times out of ten, they end up loving something completely different from what they initially thought.”
Preparing for a bridal appointment involves more than just picking dresses. Yochum advises brides to come in mentally and physically prepared, emphasizing the importance of feeling their best.
“Eat a good meal, stay hydrated, and do whatever helps you feel like your best self,” she recommends, noting that the emotional journey of finding a wedding dress can be overwhelming.
The team at Emerald Bridal constantly educates themselves on new styles and trends, ensuring they meet the evolving tastes of their clients. Whether it’s a simple ivory gown or a lace dress with warm undertones, Yochum and her team are dedicated to finding the perfect match. They even accommodate special requests, bringing in specific designs for brides who have a clear vision.
At Emerald Bridal, it’s clear that each dress tells a story, and Yochum is committed to helping every bride find their own perfect narrative.

This dress stands out with its plunging neckline and lace-up chiffon ribbons at the back, adding a modern twist to 80’s wedding trends like the shoulder puff. Jenny is perfect for the edgy bride who wants to make a unique statement and be a little different on her big day.

KEEPING TIME
ARTICLE BY NICOLETTE MARTIN
Our legacy, crafted and preserved through the moments we cherish
In the quaint neighborhood of Beaverdale, Iowa, in a small kitchen, where the aroma of home-cooked meals mingled with the tick-tock of the Kit-Cat Clock and the small suncatcher hanging in the window split beams of light into a kaleidoscope of colors, my grandmother Mary Lou Martin turned calendars into time capsules.
It was a practice born out of love; a testament to the belief that life’s true beauty lies in the details. This wasn’t merely a habit; it was a practice rooted in dedication to capturing the essence of fleeting moments, both monumental and mundane, to craft a tangible collection of memories.
Etched in dark red ink, “Man on the Moon!!” marked July 20, 1969. A more somber “President Kennedy Assassinated!” stood out in dark black on November 22, 1963, and a simple yet poignant entry “Gary (my dad) 10 years old” was sprawled across April 25, 1963. Taped to the pages were artifacts of her experiences, including newspaper clippings, movie tickets, and napkins from her favorite now-closed restaurant, Mama Lacona’s, a cherished family spot in Des Moines.
Despite Mary Lou’s passing when I was seven, before I was old enough to appreciate or commit to memory the amazing woman she was, her legacy lives on through the pages of these calendars. My memories of her are intricately woven with stories from my father and his siblings, her voice echoing in old home videos, and decades of the timelines she left behind.
Mary Lou’s spirit became the guiding force behind Joyflower, a creative studio dedicated to investing in moments. Through the design of calendars, Joyflower seeks to revive the lost art of transforming each day into a journey of introspection, gratitude, and an appreciation for life’s often-overlooked beauty.
Inspired by the beauty of the suncatcher in her window, The Timecatcher™ emerged as a tribute to Mary Lou’s commitment to capturing moments. This unique calendar transforms the passage of time into a beautiful collection of details — beams of light in the stories of our lives.
MY MEMORIES OF HER ARE INTRICATELY WOVEN WITH STORIES FROM MY FATHER AND HIS SIBLINGS, HER VOICE ECHOING IN OLD HOME VIDEOS, AND DECADES OF THE TIMELINES SHE LEFT BEHIND.
With just enough space to capture moments, we aim to shift from routine to ritual; from obligation to opportunity. Small pockets at the top of each month offer space for special mementos, and a tear-off piece at the bottom of each page helps with year-end reflection of the best moments of the months gone by.
Crafted by hand in a small home-office in Lenexa, Kansas, each calendar bears witness to Mary Lou’s influence, with her photos adorning the walls and a suncatcher in the window casting a rainbow of colors. More than just a calendar, The Timecatcher™ aspires to be a vessel of connection, bridging generational gaps and preserving the legacy of the unique way of cherishing life’s seemingly ordinary beauty. First steps to graduations, quiet moments of reflection and unexpected adventures — all captured within the pages; and the small kitchen in Beaverdale has become the foundation for something greater — an invitation for everyone to invest not just in time, but in the stories waiting to be written.

At CrossFit Westwood, we offer 1-Hour, Group Fitness classes (CrossFit) as well as Personal Training and Small Group Training to fit individual’s needs. Our gym actually consists of two gyms, one for CrossFit classes, and the other for your more traditional gym setup. All of our memberships come with 24 hour access to accommodate everyone’s schedules. I have been training individuals and group fitness classes since 2012 and have developed a passion for relationship building and all things related to gym business. Working out is the highlight of my day and my goal is for everyone that comes to CrossFit Westwood to experience exercise and working out as an enjoyable activity.
