There’s No Place Like Home

There’s something undeniably special about home. It’s more than walls and a roof—it’s the place where we create memories. I’m reminded of a quote from author, Cecelia Ahern: “Home isn’t a place, it’s a feeling.” She’s right—home is where we rest, find comfort and the stories of our lives unfold.

In this March Homes issue, we celebrate the beauty, warmth and purpose of the spaces we call our own. We showcase ways to utilize the 2025 PANTONE color of the year, a hue that is inspiring design trends for both home and fashion. Whether it’s a new coat of paint or a fresh color for nail polish, small changes using a new color can make a big impact. We even provide ideas on how to incorporate this color into your cooking with two mocha mousse inspired recipes on page 18. We also meet a local company that can help beautify your home’s exterior with stunning, seasonal windowboxes.

But home is about more than aesthetics—it’s about belonging and community. That’s why we’re honored to highlight two incredible local nonprofits working to improve living conditions for those in need. Habitat for Humanity and Scrap2Home remind us that a home is not a luxury, but a foundation for stability and hope.

So, whether you’re settling in, redesigning or simply appreciating the space you call home, we hope this issue brings you inspiration. At the end of the day, there truly is no place like home.

A PLACE TO CALL HOME

Habitat for Humanity Transforms Lives in Greater Cincinnati

In the heart of Greater Cincinnati, Habitat for Humanity is transforming lives, neighborhoods and futures through its steadfast commitment to affordable housing and community empowerment. Guided by a simple yet profound belief— that everyone deserves a decent, affordable place to call

“Together, we can make a real difference. We’re not just building homes; we’re building hope.”
– Sarah Reynolds

home—Habitat’s mission comes to life through its dedicated team and the communities they serve.

Since 1986, Habitat for Humanity Greater Cincinnati has built nearly 700 homes, including 22 last year, with projects ranging from single homes to entire neighborhoods. These efforts have transformed communities in areas like Lockland, East Price Hill, North College Hill and Evanston to name a few. In 2025, Habitat plans to start construction on 40 more homes.

“At Habitat for Humanity, we partner with families who are ready to take an active role in achieving homeownership by putting in 'sweat equity'—helping build their homes—and completing financial and homeowner education courses,” explains Sarah Reynolds, communications and marketing officer at Habitat for Humanity Greater Cincinnati.

Reynolds describes a rigorous selection process which ensures interested families meet criteria such

as financial need, the ability to pay an affordable mortgage and a willingness to partner. Having the benefit of a zero percent interest mortgage, this approach ensures Habitat’s work is both impactful and sustainable.

While building homes remains a cornerstone of their mission, Habitat also strengthens communities by repairing homes.

“We perform big critical repairs like roof or water damage and do accessibility modification [for those with disabilities],” Reynolds says. “We also reduce waste via our ReStores, which sell donated goods and furniture.”

In addition, Habitat is opening doors to career opportunities through its Construction Training Program, an effort to address the current critical labor shortage.

“This six-week, hands-on skills program prepares individuals to enter careers in the construction industry,” Reynolds reports. “Participants receive real-world training on Habitat job sites and have the

option to continue working with the organization for a short time while they explore other permanent employment opportunities.”

Another standout initiative Reynolds takes pride in is the “Women Build” program, which brings women together to learn construction skills, build homes and make a difference in the lives of local families.

“It’s an empowering experience,” Reynolds says excitedly. “It’s a chance for women to take the lead in building homes while fostering camaraderie and community spirit.”

Reynolds emphasizes that volunteers are the backbone of Habitat’s efforts, whether building or lending their time at ReStores.

“There’s a role for everyone,” she shares. “You can join as an individual volunteer or gather a group to volunteer as a team. It’s a fantastic way to bond while giving back to the community.”

Even with the strength of its dedicated volunteers and impactful programs, Habitat faces mounting challenges in today’s housing market.

“We as a community aren’t building homes at the rate we were 50 years ago,” she reveals. “The shortage of starter homes, driven by corporations purchasing properties to rent, limited available land and aging housing stock, has made affordable housing increasingly difficult to achieve.”

Despite these obstacles, Habitat’s mission continues to inspire hope.

“Together, we can make a real difference,” Reynolds says. “We’re not just building homes; we’re building hope.”

STAYING ON TREND WITH THE HOT COLOR FOR 2025

Since 1999, a global team of color experts at the Pantone Color Institute has combed the world looking for new color influences to select their color of the year. For 2025, they selected PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse. This warm, brown hue is imbued with richness that simultaneously conveys a sense of both luxury and comfort.

“PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse expresses a level of thoughtful indulgence,” states Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of Pantone Color Institute. “Sophisticated and lush, yet at the same time an unpretentious classic.”

Double Mocha De light

TS INSPIRED BY THE PANTONE

If the PANTONE color of the year has you craving chocolate and mocha, you aren’t alone. Prepare to indulge in these recipes inspired by the mocha mousse hues that are setting the tone for 2025. Think the best parts of a chocolate martini and an espresso martini, married together in one delicious cocktail. Or a light, creamy dessert that’s full of chocolate and light coffee flavor. Whether you’re tempted by the warmth of the color or the richness of these delights, there’s delectable comfort in both.

ARTICLE BY MICHELLE MOODY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANIE MEINBERG

Chocolate Mocha Martini

INGREDIENTS

• 2 ounces chocolate liqueur

• 2 ounces coffee liqueur (or substitute espresso or coffee)

• 1 ounce vodka

• ½ ounce half-and-half

DIRECTIONS

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add all ingredients. Shake well. Strain into glass and enjoy! Optional: rim the glass with chocolate shavings, or add coffee beans or chocolate flakes for a decorative touch.

Chocolate Mocha Mousse

INGREDIENTS

• 10 ounces semisweet chocolate chips

• 1½ cups heavy cream

• 2 tablespoons espresso

• 1 teaspoon coffee liqueur (or substitute vanilla extract)

• 2/3 cup confectioners’ sugar (sifted)

DIRECTIONS

In a double boiler, melt chocolate. If using a microwave, pause to stir every 30 seconds to prevent chocolate from seizing. Transfer to a large bowl.

Using a mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, beat the cream on medium-high speed until firm peaks form. Be sure not to overbeat. Gently fold in the espresso and liqueur (or vanilla). Once mixed, very gradually add the sugar to prevent lumps forming.

If needed, beat the mousse mix again to return it to medium peaks, then gently fold the entire mixture into the melted chocolate. Divide the mousse into individual bowls. Cover and refrigerate for two hours before serving. If desired, garnish with chocolate shavings, fresh berries, mint and whipped cream. Dig in!

WASTE TO TREASURE

In a world where piles of scrap wood often end up in landfills, Nick Francis saw an opportunity to create something extraordinary. As Co-Founder and Executive Director of Scrap2Home, a Madeira-based nonprofit, Francis and his team, including his wife Amy and numerous volunteers, are turning discarded wood into hope, one piece of furniture at a time.

FROM PANDEMIC HOBBY TO PURPOSEFUL MISSION

The story of Scrap2Home began in the spring of 2020, amidst the quiet chaos of the COVID pandemic.

“It was very small-scale at first,” Francis shares. “Just something to do at home during lockdown.”

Then, the seeds of a bigger idea took root: create a nonprofit whose mission is simple–reduce the amount of wood sent to landfills and provide free furniture to families in need.

Francis, a longtime educator, wanted to tackle two problems: the overwhelming waste in society and the lack of furniture for families in need. Could scrap wood destined for landfills be transformed into something valuable? Fast forward to September 19, 2022—Scrap2Home officially launched with its first build in a woodshop with volunteers.

Nick Francis (far right) crafts furniture from scrap wood with a team of volunteers.

How Scrap2Home Builds Hope, Furniture + Community

“We help people and organizations who don’t want to throw wood into a dumpster,” Francis explains. “There are lots of people interested in keeping material out of the landfill. We provide an avenue for using that ‘waste’ to help people in need.”

BUILDING FURNITURE AND FUTURES

Scrap2Home operates on a unique model. They collect scrap wood from construction sites, businesses and even homeowners, then turn these castoffs into sturdy, attractive furniture. Volunteers—many of them regulars—gather to build various items, mostly tables. Today, more than 500 volunteers have contributed over 5,000 hours.

“We’ve saved over 30,000 pounds of wood from landfills and built more than 1,000 items,” Francis beams. “We’ve never run out of scrap wood—in fact, we sometimes have to turn it down because of storage limitations.”

• Volunteer: Join the crew to build furniture.

• Book a Team-Building Workshop: Bring your team for a meaningful bonding experience.

3 Unique Dining Experiences

The furniture goes directly to families in need through a partnership with New Life Furniture Bank, whose woodshop they have been using. In return for using their shop, Scrap2Home gives everything they build there to the furniture bank, and they pass it on to their clients.

“It has been an awesome partnership that has allowed us to get going and truly prove the concept of Scrap2Home. We are extremely grateful to New Life for all their support,” Francis explains. “The need is alarming, but seeing how the community has rallied around this idea is incredible.”

In addition to building furniture, Scrap2Home offers team-building workshops where businesses and groups build tables together, fostering skills in leadership, collaboration, communication and trust.

LOOKING AHEAD: A NEW CHAPTER IN 2025

Scrap2Home’s next big step is moving into a dedicated woodshop in 2025. This move will allow the nonprofit to expand its operations and independence. The transition will require community support, and Scrap2Home is gearing up for a fundraising campaign.

“This next step is necessary because we are growing, our needs have changed and we need the independence of a new space,” Francis explains. “The move is necessary if we want to be a sustainable organization.”

With the impact they have made so far, Francis and his team have proven that with a little creativity and a lot of heart, even scrap wood can be a foundation for change. Whether you’re donating, building or just spreading the word, there’s a place for you at Scrap2Home.

WINDOWS OF OPPORTUNITY

WOW Windowboxes Owner Bret Schneider.

From Music Hall to suburban side streets, countless Greater Cincinnati buildings deliver charming curb appeal, thanks to attractive windowboxes and the flowers and decorative plants contained within. Many of those enhancements have been installed and maintained by the aptly named WOW Windowboxes company.

“We service about 1,500 to 2,000 clients each season,” reports Bret Schneider, owner of WOW Windowboxes. “Each client, no matter the size or scope, receives our unparalleled attention to detail and dedication to delivering a WOW-worthy experience.”

WOW Windowboxes has been designing and installing windowboxes for more than 15 years.

“Since 2009, we’ve been on a mission to brighten homes and businesses with our signature style and exceptional service,” Schneider says. “Even small touches can make a big impact.”

It all began in a garage. Schneider’s mother, Sue, dreamed of having attractive windowboxes for her own home but found the market lacking. After taking matters into her own hands, neighbors soon came calling and things grew from there.

“We started humbly in that garage with a rusty Dodge Durango, hauling supplies—a symbol of our resourcefulness and dedication to making things work with what we had,” Schneider shares. “That same spirit of creativity and determination continues to drive us.”

Today, WOW Windowboxes operates out of a warehouse and office space in Saint Bernard, with 30 talented team members and a fleet of 12 wrapped box trucks to serve Greater Cincinnati.

“Our focus has always been on improving our services and exceeding client expectations at every turn,” Schneider says. “Our full-service approach, including automatic irrigation systems and seasonal maintenance, eliminates hassle.”

Many of the company’s clients are some of the top realtors in the city. Others include members of the Cincinnati Bengals, HOMEARAMA participants and especially individual families looking to brighten up their block.

“While we’re known for our stunning windowboxes, we also design and plant planters and other containers to suit any space,” Schneider explains. “Our services include design, installation and maintenance. We provide irrigation systems to simplify watering and custom planting designs to match our clients’ styles and preferences.”

Regardless of the season or setting, WOW Windowboxes ensures that every container is breathtaking.

“We’ve had so many amazing opportunities to showcase our work, all of which align perfectly with WOW’s mission to create beauty and bring joy to the spaces we touch,” Schneider explains. “We’re thrilled to contribute to making spaces throughout Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky even more memorable and beautiful.”

The creative designers at WOW Windowboxes have a solution ready to impress, even in challenging settings.

“Sometimes it’s not about windowboxes—it might be planters around a pool, windowboxes on deck railings or planters for decks and rooftops,” he says.

While windowboxes add an attractive flair to any setting, some may believe them to be high-maintenance or expensive.

That’s just not the case. Consider budget-friendly and scalable solutions like single pots and two-foot windowboxes that can accommodate nearly any space.

“We’re extremely creative in helping clients bring color and fun into their outdoor spaces, proving that outdoor beauty can be both accessible and versatile,” says Schneider. Add flower power to the outdoor spaces of your home or business this spring with WOW Windowboxes.
