day now. While the lazy days of sipping cool beverages poolside may be numbered, this month brings a sense of renewal. New routines, new clothes and new school supplies often come to mind in August. Earlier this year, we dedicated issues to both the men and women of our community, so it would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents this month: kids and pets! Inside, we meet local students who had amazing adventures this summer. From dancing on a cruise ship to rebuilding homes in Appalachia to competing for a national robotics title, read how some of our best and brightest in Lakota spent their summer. We also explore how teens are working to provide peer support as the Hope Squad kicks off their second year in Lakota schools. If you’re a cat lover, we’ve found your favorite new coffee shop—the Kitty Brew Café.

example, a cat that is more on the shy side should be considered for families with small children and a confident, outgoing cat for families with many children or a dog.

+ The first ingredient in your cat’s food should be a meat ingredient. + Adopt from a shelter instead of a store; almost 5 million cats and dogs are euthanized

FOR SOME LOCAL STUDENTS, SUMMER WAS ALL ABOUT ADVENTURE AND MAKING AN IMPACT. Here’s proof that summer can be more than a break. Bailey Lindeman made a splash this summer, dancing across a cruise ship stage. In June, she boarded a five-day cruise to the Western Caribbean with a 39-member dance team from West Chester Academy. One unforgettable evening, they were the

entertainment, filling the floating stage with an upbeat routine featuring dances from across the decades. The dance team also took a master class from a professional dancer while aboard. “This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Bailey says. “To be able to be on a cruise with all of my friends and dance was so much fun.” The cruise performance was the grand finale to 11 years of Bailey’s dancing with West Chester Academy. She graduated from Lakota West High School in May and will be starting classes toward a Chemistry major at The Ohio State University this fall. “I’m going to miss it a lot next year,” she adds. “It was my last time dancing with my team. It was the perfect wrap-up for me.”
Swimming with dolphins was Bailey’s favorite excursion. Rehearsal was a challenge on a stage that rocked back and forth in the ocean waves. Bailey showed off her zombie moves to the classic 80s song, “Thriller.” The dancers were rewarded with wild applause from a packed theater. The no-pressure, all-fun performance. 22

2019 National Technology Student Association (TSA) Conference in Washington D.C. The team started working together last December, building and programming a robot to perform specified tasks. They were among 77 students representing Lakota at the national-level competition. TSA hosts national competitions in 70 Science, Technology, Engineering and Math categories each summer. Working together as a team was a large part of the learning experience. “We had to put our disagreements aside and not let them carry over into the competition,” says Mason. “Everyone has opinions. We have to respect that—you can’t always think you are right,” adds Lucas. “In the end, we realized we all had the same goal: to make our hometown proud,” says Mason. “We ended up getting 20th place in the nation. We were excited and did the best that we could,” he says.
The students learned the importance of time management as they worked through the summer. Compromise—to succeed, they used the best ideas from each team member. Independence was key during the five days in D.C., away from their families. Programming is fun! The team enjoyed the fast pace and trial-and-error process. Critical-thinking skills—the team needs everyone’s brain power to function at its best. CONTINUED >

d n a h a g n i lend in appalachia When Eden Michelson signed up for a service trip, she was expecting to help others. After a week of hard work in the hot sun, she discovered that the biggest impact was on herself. Eden, a rising senior at Lakota East, joined 25 other teens and adults from Lord of Life Lutheran Church, West Chester, on an Appalachia Service Project (ASP) in Hazard, Kentucky. The mission of ASP is to repair and replace homes for impoverished people of rural Central Appalachia. For her, the trip was just as much about building relationships as it was about the building sites. “I love meeting new people and growing closer to old friends,” Eden says. “It wasn’t all work—there was also down time when we got to hang out, play games, exchange stories and have fun.” “Yeah, we were helping others, but this kind of trip helps me, too,” she adds. “Seeing how little others have humbles me and makes me think. I remember how much I have and how blessed I am.”
Using an electric saw and installing drywall are new skills on Eden’s résumé. Eden learned to beat the heat with a cool attitude—and lots of water. “We is greater than me” became the week’s motto—a reminder to think of others first. Going unplugged in the mountains—a wi-fi dead zone— meant more meaningful personal connections. More stuff doesn’t equal more happiness. “Helping others is what makes me happy,” Eden shares.

“WHAT I LOVE MOST IS HOW PERSONAL THE SUBJECT MATTER IS...I UNDERSTAND THE CLOSENESS OF THE BOND THAT FORMS BETWEEN A PET AND ITS HUMAN” MICHELLE STAUB DOESN’T JUST EMBROIDER PET PICTURES; SHE MAKES MEMORIES FOR PET PARENTS AROUND THE WORLD. A selftaught artist who originally embroidered video game characters, Michelle found she loved showcasing animal subjects when she created a piece featuring her own cat, Purrl. “What I love most is how personal the subject matter is...I understand the closeness of the bond that forms between a pet and its human,” Michelle says. She appreciates the texture of thread, its similarity to pet fur. “It’s not a flat piece of art, it has texture and depth,” she adds. The process involves creating a mock-up and pattern from a photo and finding quirks to capture. Each piece takes 15-40 hours to create. Michelle has created more than 600 pieces in the last five years. StitchingSabbatical.com CONTINUED >

“I ENJOY MAKING PHOTO ART BECAUSE IT MAKES PEOPLE HAPPY” Jen Reid is not your typical watercolor painter. Instead of a paintbrush, she uses an app to create watercolor prints of animals for pet owners. The retired Lakota teacher has been working with photo apps since being inspired at a workshop in 2009. “I enjoy making photo art because it makes people happy,” Jen explains. Jen started using animals as her subjects when a friend requested a pet portrait featuring her dog which had passed away. “When they see it digitally altered, they melt,” she says. Jen loves working with animals because clients consider them family members and it brings comfort. She edits and digitally alters photos provided by clients, prints and mats the image, and is finished in about a week. She compares her process to baking. “Baking isn’t hard...the oven does the magic,” she says. “My skill is getting the settings right. While the transformation is like baking, there’s skill in getting the right ingredients into the pan.”

THOSE YEARS STRESSFUL. In response to rising mental health needs, Lakota Local Schools has adopted a proactive strategy, one that works to plant seeds of hope for students experiencing loneliness, depression or desperation. Based on a program originally implemented in Utah, Hope Squads are groups of students at both Lakota high schools. Selected by their peers based on how comfortable peers would be bringing up a concern with them, the squads and their advisors

work with a detailed curriculum for training. The training includes Question-Persuade-Refer (QPR), a strategy that empowers students to calmly check in on their peers and connect them to a mental health counselor when they are in crisis. “The QPR definitely helped me. It gave me a new perspective of how to talk to people and how to be a good listener,” says Chris Dunn, a member of Lakota West’s Hope Squad. Informally, students also work to establish trust and friendships. They host Hope Week events with activities and positive messaging. West’s Squad created bracelets with affirming messages, and East’s Squad gave out sunflowers in January to spread some sunshine.
“IT WAS HELPFUL TO HAVE OTHER HOPE SQUAD MEMBERS THAT UNDERSTOOD AND WERE THERE TO SUPPORT YOU.” Ellie Leisten, rising Senior, Lakota East
“I loved seeing everyone’s faces when we gave out the sunflowers,” says Ellie Leisten, a rising senior at Lakota East. “We want to make Hope Week even bigger and better understood next year.” Mental health is gaining importance in the minds of teens, according to the results of this first year. “We are part of the national research for Hope Squad, which shows 40% of referrals have been either self-referred or by a Hope Squad member,” says Lori Brown, Director of Student Services for Lakota Local Schools. “This means they were comfortable enough to come forward. Part of the mission is to eliminate stigma about mental health concerns.” In the future, a version of Hope Squad will be implemented in the junior schools in Lakota as well, and long-term, the Squad members want to see their strategies spread. Chris says, “I would like, in the future, to see all students doing what Hope Squad does: spreading kindness and showing people that they are loved.”

BARK IT UP
If your dog doesn’t settle for plain, kick these treats up a notch by incorporating some of these dog-safe fruits and vegetables: + BANANAS—In moderation, bananas are great treats for dogs. Just beware of the sugar content—they shouldn’t be part of your dog’s regular diet. + BLUEBERRIES—Blueberries are a superfood full of antioxidants and fiber. Try these as a substitute to training treats. + CARROTS—Carrots are a great low-calorie snack high in beta-carotene and fiber. Chomping on them is also great for your dog’s chompers. + GREEN BEANS—Full of fiber and low in calories, plain green beans are great prepared any way! + WATERMELON—Filled with vitamins and potassium, this summer treat is sure to be your pup’s new favorite. For those dog days of summer, watermelon is a great way to keep your dog hydrated! Just be sure to remove the rind and seeds. Learn more about safe food for your four-legged friends at AKC.org.

“Over the last 35 years, working both as an assistant and then as a veterinarian, I have collected many wonderful memories regarding families and their pets. I do have the best job in the world, to witness daily the special and unique bond between humans and their pets... A pet’s unconditional love and interaction truly awaken one’s soul in a way that provides a happier and healthier life.” —DR. JENNIFER DEHNBOSTEL,

She followed me to college, law school, and now she is the resident “Attorney-at-Paw” at Lyons & Lyons Law. She’s a workaholic and loves coming into the office, and I love watching clients instantly relax and smile when they see her!”

—JEAN MABRY, RISKSOURCE CLARK-THEDERS “Our dog Daisy inspired us to become foster parents to other dogs in need! We had been considering it for a while, but we were scared. Scared we would fail. Scared we wouldn’t know how. Scared of all kinds of things. Watching Daisy overcome her fear and anxiety after we adopted her moved us to get over our own fears and we became foster parents.”
