I hope this letter finds you in good health, high spirits, and enjoying your summer so far.
This month, we turn our attention to kids and pets! Both have a way of brightening our lives and adding joy to our days.
Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. If you have kids or grandchildren in your life, we have a special DIY project this month to create a magical backyard fort for them to enjoy.
Secondarily, who could forget pets? Their special kind of companionship can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow, and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends? The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship. This month, we meet a local dog trainer who shares his insight into what is often a treasured member of the family.
What children and pets share are that they both need us. Our care, attention, and intention shapes how they are raised and who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the children and pets in your life this month.

BUILD A KID-FRIENDLY OASIS IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD

This adorable outdoor play space is not only easy and inexpensive to build, but it is full of charm and the perfect spot for the kids to play and lounge. The A-frame structure is endlessly customizable to any style and color scheme desired. Your kids’ imagination can run wild spending time outdoors!
To begin, dig 18” deep holes for the footings. Cut a 4x4x8 pressure-treated post into 2-foot lengths, pour quick-set concrete in each hole, set the posts, and allow to dry. Next, use lag screws to attach 2x10 boards to the posts on each side to create the base. Attach 2x6 boards across the base frame for the joists using metal hangers. For the deck, we used pressure-treated 8x10 decking. Fasten the decking with exterior screws. Don’t forget to constantly check with a level!
For the A-frame, we used 2x4 boards. Cut a 60-degree angle at the top of the A, and 30-degree angles at the bottom. If desired, run a 4x4 between the A-frame and the decking to add height. Use heavy-duty exterior screws to attach the A-frame to the structure. The top of the A-frame comes together and is held by exterior screws. If desired, paint or stain. For the roofing, we used 8-foot corrugated clear panels and screwed those into the A-frame for a weather-protecting cover.
We left three feet uncovered in front so a chair and some pots with herbs and flowers could be added to the entrance. Decorate with outdoor pillows, a children’s table, outdoor rug and hanging flowerpots to make it feel like a special place for kids to go.

Warrior Way Martial Arts has been offering their kids’ program for over 25 years, says Brandon McDaniel, manager and instructor at the studio. “Warrior Way is unique in that we divide our kids’ programs into three distinct age/skill level classes. In doing so, we reach students of varying ages and skill levels in a dynamic way.”
“Warrior Way was started with the collective efforts of Harvy Berman, Scott Lewis, and Bill Thompson to provide a reality-based martial arts center that focuses on building well-prepared students as well as an opportunity for students to bond in a unique way. We focus on the characteristics of tolerance, perseverance, courage, responsibility, health, respect, strength, honor, self-discipline, loyalty, gratitude, and most importantly, leadership,” explains Brandon. “Students are able to describe these characteristics and provide examples of ways they can implement them in their daily lives.”
Training at Warrior Way begins as young as four years old. “Our first program is called Little Warriors,” says Brandon, “and is designed for students aged 4-6 years old.” Little Warriors combines Muay Thai Kickboxing and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in 30-minute sessions. Offered at 4:30 PM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, “students learn the beginning skills to defend themselves and build physical attributes that will cross over to other activities,” adds Brandon.
For ages 7 and up, the studio offers Warrior Way Kids. Also a combination of Muay Thai Kickboxing and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, students at this level train for 55-minute sessions. In this class, says Brandon, “Students learn the skills to address the bullying problems that children encounter today.” Warrior Way Kids also builds physical skills that transfer to sports, general play, and more. Warrior Way Kids is currently offered
on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:00 PM and Saturday mornings at 10:00.
For older and more experienced children, Warrior Way offers its Warrior Way Youth programs. “These classes are designed for students aged 10 and up,” says Brandon, “as well as students who are at a higher level in our Warrior Way Kids program.” At this level, classes are separated by discipline. Youth Muay Thai Kickboxing classes are scheduled Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:00 PM, and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:00 PM as well as Saturday mornings at 11:00. “These classes are designed to be more competitive in nature and allow the students lots of opportunity to challenge themselves physically as they learn how to defend themselves.”
“Having been in business for more than 25 years, we are fortunate to see the fruits of our labor spread throughout the community,” says Brandon. In addition to the positive feedback they receive from students and parents about the growth and skills gained through training, some students who have grown up in the program have transitioned to a teaching role, such as Stacy Coleman. “We first met Stacy in 2014,” says Brandon, “when she was only six years old. She was a quiet young lady who seemed very apprehensive.” Over time, she developed skill and confidence, and her brother and parents also joined Warrior Way. Stacy continued to train, competed in Jiu-Jitsu tournaments, and excelled as both a student and athlete. Today Stacy is a “fantastic kids’ instructor,” and is “assisting in teaching the next generation.”
Classes at Warrior Way run all summer long, says Brandon. “Give us a call or email and set up a time to have your children try a free class and see what Warrior Way can do for them!”

“My military experience as an explosive detection dog handler exposed me to the power of canine-human partnerships and the importance of clear communication and trust between the two,” says Matthew Lamarand, founder of Dogology University, a local dog training school.
Matthew started Dogology University in 2017, after serving as an explosive detection dog handler in the United States Air Force. “When I got out, I moved with my wife and 11-month-old daughter back to Michigan to find work in the civilian sector, but quickly realized the demand for explosive detection dogs was quite low.” Matthew decided to write a book about dog training, Dogology 101:
To his surprise, despite self-publishing with “no real social media backing,” it quickly jumped to the number two spot in sales behind Cesar Milan.
Seeing there was a market for his knowledge, Matthew and his wife Ashleena launched Dogology University. “We apply the same principles of discipline, structure, and trust that I learned in the military to our dog training programs. We believe in nurturing a strong partnership between dogs and their owners through focus, effective communication, and positive reinforcement techniques,” says Matthew.
“We specialize in boarding school options. The parents drop off their dogs and we keep them Monday through Friday, and on Friday the parents come and pick up their students.” At pick-up time, pet parents receive a one-hour private lesson to teach them what the dog has learned that week with hands-on coaching to prepare them to reinforce the learning at home over the weekend. Such an approach “allows us to gradually reintegrate the dogs back into their families with clear rules, structure, and expectations,
resulting in a harmonious household and a well-trained dog,” he says.
“At Dogology University, we firmly believe in using a focus-based training approach,” continues Matthew. “This means rewarding desired behaviors rather than focusing on punishment or dominance-based methods.” Such an approach creates a positive environment where dogs can thrive. Matthew also emphasizes the importance of communication. “It is crucial for owners to learn how to communicate clearly and consistently with their dogs to convey their expectations and reinforce desired behaviors.”
Dogology University is currently developing online training programs to expand their reach as well as exploring partnerships with shelters and rescues. “Our ultimate goal is to make a positive impact on the lives of as many dogs and owners as possible, creating well-balanced, happy canine companions.”

Chickens have become increasingly popular as pets in both suburban and urban areas during the last 20 years. Backyard chickens may seem to be an unsuspecting animal to keep as a pet but the tried and true egg producers are back in fashion as food costs are soaring and families are looking for more food independence in light of recent supply chain shortages. There’s a lot to like about raising chickens in your backyard. Surprisingly, chickens are relatively low maintenance. And bonus – unlike dogs, they don’t need to be bathed or groomed, and they don’t shed on your clothes or require training. Oh and bonus – they make you breakfast.
The eggs from backyard chickens are the best—tastier and fresher than any store-bought eggs. Much of the day, the birds entertain themselves, picking at grass, worms, beetles, and all of the good things that go into making those delicious farm eggs. Plus, with their keen eye for insect pests, chickens make for great gardening companions.
Chickens can provide family companionship, fun, entertainment, sustainable fresh food, and plenty of poop that gardeners prize as a natural fertilizer/composting material. Could backyard chickens be the perfect pet/producer to add to your home?
Chickens are sociable creatures, so plan to keep three to six birds at least. With this amount, you’ll always have a steady supply of eggs, since an adult hen lays about two eggs every three days, on average. Local ordinances also dictate how many chickens one household can keep.
All of this costs money, of course. The materials to build and furnish a coop and a 20 x 5-foot run—including wood, fencing, and hardware—are going to set you back at least $300. If you can’t do this work yourself, you’ll also be buying skilled labor.
Overall, expect to spend between $500 and $700 when getting started depending on the size of your flock, coop and run. For prefabricated coops, expect to pay $600 or more.
Chickens need to have an enclosed coop that provides adequate space, protection from the elements and predators, and good ventilation. A modified shed, barn, or stable with an outdoor run is a good option for a coop. The outdoor run should be fully enclosed if you have predators like hawks or owls nearby. Ideally, coops are slightly elevated off the ground to prevent flooding and have windows on each side, enough nest boxes to allow several chickens to nest simultaneously, outlets for lighting, fans if they’re needed, air inlets or ventilation holes on the roof, and a concrete floor treated with a pet-safe waterproof coating that allows for easy cleaning and drainage.
Search Pinterest for “chicken coop building plans” if you’re building your own or consider going the luxury route with a gorgeous custom-built coop from a company like CutestCoops.com
Most hens will start laying eggs when they’re about 18 to 20 weeks old, although it may take more time for them to reach their peak output. Often, the first eggs are laid irregularly or are smaller or oddly shaped when compared with a typical egg. This is nothing to worry about! Once a cycle is established, most hens will lay one egg per day.
