As the days grow longer and the weather gets warmer, I find myself eagerly anticipating the arrival of summer. There's just something about this season that brings about a sense of excitement and adventure.
While the other seasons have their charms, special occasions, and beauties in their own way, I like nothing better than to soak in the warmth and sun of summer and leave the colder weather behind. The longer days, cookouts, trips to the beach, and slower pace all make summer the best season there is. As we all know, living in Michigan, we have to enjoy the warm weather while it lasts!
The pages in our Summer Fun issue will help you make the most of the season in West Bloomfield. And even if summer doesn't mean nearly three months of summer vacation anymore (because we're, you know, adults) we can still look forward to an adventure by crossing things off our summer bucket lists.
So whether your idea of summer fun is preparing a special meal on the grill for friends and family, getting out the boat, dining on the patio of your favorite restaurant, riding your bike on the West Bloomfield Trail, or enjoying a book at the beach, our wish is you find the time to make your summer dreams come true. If you need ideas, we have some for you in this issue.
Just like this season has a way of bringing people together, we hope the pages inside this month’s issue will enrich and enliven your experience of West Bloomfield this summer!

ARTICLE BY AMY NIEZUR PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY GILLESPIE“In 1966, I started my journey as an apprentice carpenter building homes and additions and graduated as a journeyman carpenter after serving a rigorous four-year apprenticeship,” says Freddie Mekled, president of Thermal Shield Windows and Siding in Waterford. Inspired by this experience to start his own business, Freddie decided to focus on the installation and repair of windows and siding.
While building Thermal Shield Windows and Siding, Freddie worked for Ford Motor Company for 13 years as a carpenter. As his own business grew, Freddie stepped down from his position at Ford and opened a showroom, turning what started as a home-based business into a full-fledged company.
SHIELD WINDOWS AND SIDING CAN HELP!
Today, says Freddie, “Thermal Shield Windows and Siding is proud to be one of the leading providers of high-quality home improvement products. Our commitment to precision and unwavering dedication to customer satisfaction have allowed us to build a reputation that we are truly proud of.”
Thermal Shield Windows and Siding offers windows, siding, patio doors, bays and bows, garden windows, roofing, and more. “We take pride in being a full-service crew,” notes Freddie. “We handle every aspect of your home project from start to finish.”
“With summer fast approaching,” continues Freddie, “homeowners are gearing up for backyard barbecues, pool parties, and other outdoor activities. We believe that investing in high-quality home improvement will not only improve the overall look of your home, but also enhance your enjoyment of it this summer. When your home looks great, it feels great!”
New windows can also help you save money, says Freddie. “Our energy-efficient windows are designed to keep your home cool in summer and warm in the winter, reducing your reliance on air conditioning and heating systems.”
Whether you’re looking to upgrade your windows, replace your siding, or simply give your home a fresh new look, adds Freddie, “We have the expertise and experience needed to get the job done right. Trips to the zoo, the mall, and area parks…sounds like a fun summer! These are some of the planned activities at Fairmont Senior Living of Farmington Hills, a community that offers assisted living and memory care services for area seniors.
Finding the right place for seniors with changing needs can be challenging. “Selecting the right community can be hard,” says Oren Jackson of Fairmont Senior Living of Farmington Hills. “My advice would be to ask the potential resident what they want in their new home and look for those things.” Oren notes that many families are looking for activities, increased socialization, 24-hour care, and affordable rates. “We offer all these key points for families and residents,” says Oren, “and the little extras such as good food and smiling faces.”
At Fairmont Senior Living of Farmington Hills, residents are offered three meals per day with snacks and daily
activities. “We also provide laundry service and make up beds daily, with 24/7 care led by our Registered Nurses Natalie and Lauren,” says Oren. Living spaces are attractive and designed with their residents’ needs in mind. “We are nearing the completion of our building renovation,” adds Oren, “and it looks great.”
Montessori principles are woven into the Memory Care program at Fairmont. Using the work of the Center for Applied Research in Dementia, this program places an emphasis on group engagement, creating a sense of belonging, and forming social roles for each resident. “There are a variety of daily activities,” says Oren, “such as spiritual services, bingo, and outside trips.”
With several medical techs with over 20 years of experience, and concierges with over 15 years, notes Oren, Fairmont Senior Living of Farmington Hills lives its mission of “enhancing life and advancing wellness.”

Summer is here, and for some, finding a new home is at the top of the list. Rick and Patty Nessel of the Nessel Real Estate Team, lifelong residents of the West Bloomfield area, are experts in the field. “We work together very closely as a husband-and-wife team,” says Rick. “We provide excellent service and open lines of communication to our clients during the buying and selling process so we can make it as stress-free for our clients as possible.”
“Not only have Patty and I been in the real estate business for years,” says Rick, “we came to real estate from very different, but helpful backgrounds. Patty has been a lawyer for 30 years and managed her own law firm, and I was in the marketing and advertising arena for over 30 years,” he adds. “Bringing those skills to the real estate world, while knowing and living in the community our entire lives, allows us to understand the many benefits this community has to offer. Whether it be living in the area, shopping, parks, lakes, and many other reasons, we are proud of our community.”
Rick and Patty specialize in residential homes and condos, though they also assist landlords and tenants in the rental market. “Patty went through the West Bloomfield school system,” notes Rick. “She had a law firm in the area and works mostly with buyers looking in West Bloomfield and the surrounding area. She really enjoys first-time home buyers, so she can fully educate them about the process.” As for Rick, he attended school in Farmington and has spent his entire working career in the area and specializes in helping local sellers.
“The process of buying and selling a home or condo can be tricky,” says Rick. “We can make the process smooth and rewarding by negotiating on your behalf and looking out for your best interests. We guide you from the day we meet until closing day.” The Nessel Real Estate Team offers a free market analysis, references from area buyers and sellers, professional photography, and cutting-edge marketing and advertising at no charge. “We absolutely love what we do.”

Summer is here, and for many children, this means summer camp! Of course, some children’s needs require unique accommodations for camp, so we’ve rounded up organizations who serve up summer fun tailored just for them. For those looking to give back this summer, here are some ideas on how to help support the missions of summer camps serving special kids.
SCAMP is a 5-week summer program for disabled individuals in the metro area aged 3-26. Founded in 1967, SCAMP provides a variety of structured activities to help with social skills, prevocational skills, and language enrichment, along with art, music therapy, and swimming at Walnut Lake.
You can help SCAMP fulfill their mission by donating gently used toys and books, purchasing items from their Amazon
wishlist, or making a tax-deductible monetary contribution. For more information, visit bloomfieldscamp.com
Lions Bear Lake Camp offers camp sessions for children who are deaf and hard of hearing, blind and visually impaired, and those with juvenile diabetes. Sponsored by the Lions of Michigan and held in Lapeer, Bear Lake Camp features a challenge course, fishing dock, and more.
Donations to Lions Bear Lake Camp can be made directly through their website at bearlakecamp.org . You can also purchase commemorative brick pavers, benches, or picnic tables, and find out more about their fundraising events, such as an upcoming golf classic on August 20.
