LIFESTYLE LETTER
In this season of gratitude, I find myself pausing to reflect on the blessings that inspire my days here in West Austin, morning walks under big Texas sky, familiar faces at local spots, and the sense of belonging our community brings.
This month I’ve been especially thankful for the laughter of family and friends and the quiet moments that bring balance to busy days. One recent evening together was a beautiful reminder of how much strength and comfort come from simply sharing time with the people we love.

Our November issue is filled with stories of gathering, giving, and celebrating the individuals and organizations that make West Austin such a special place to call home. I’m deeply grateful for our WACL partners, whose support allows us to bring these stories to your doorstep each month, and for you, our readers, who remind us why this work matters.
As we celebrate this season of gratitude, let’s remember that the greatest gifts are the connections we cherish and the kindness we give.
Wishing you and your family a season filled with gratitude and grace,

COMBINING PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE WITH PERSONAL DEDICATION, STEVE VINKLAREK BRINGS HELP AND HOPE ACROSS COUNTY LINES.
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE WOOD
PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF STEVE VINKLAREK AND HUNT VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT (HUNT VFD)
In times of crisis, leadership often comes from familiar faces. The recent flooding in Kerr County left lasting challenges for families and first responders. Standing alongside them was local State Farm agent Steve Vinklarek, who offered not only professional expertise but personal commitment.

Steve and his family acted quickly when floods struck rural communities, lending their voices, resources, and connections to support those in need. He encouraged aid for first responders and directed donations to the Hunt Volunteer Fire Department (Hunt VFD), a cornerstone of recovery efforts. Kerr County holds deep meaning for his family, his daughter has long been a proud Camp Mystic camper, though she was unable to attend this year. For Steve, the floods were deeply personal, and his leadership helped focus attention and resources on communities too often overlooked once the headlines fade
That spirit of service reflects the values at the center of his business. Steve began his career with State Farm in 1993 and became an agent in 1998. Today his West Lake Hills office includes eight licensed team members who collectively bring more than a century of industry experience to families across Travis, Williamson, and Hays counties. From that foundation, he has built a reputation not just as a trusted insurance agent, but as a neighbor whose influence extends far beyond policy paperwork.
For Steve, responding to crisis means recognizing that loss affects people on a deeply personal level and that compassion is as essential as material aid. His calls for donations and his family’s active role in relief efforts reflect that conviction, reminding us that solidarity and emotional support are just as critical when communities are in upheaval.
Beyond disaster relief, Steve supports organizations close to home. His team partners with the Eanes Education Foundation and sponsors Westlake High School athletics, reinforcing ties across the Eanes community. He is listed as a proud sponsor of the Women’s Symphony League and the Junior Symphony League, which benefit the Austin Symphony and its youth programs. He has also appeared among local beneficiaries of the Austin Crop Hunger Walk, helping drive support for hunger-relief efforts.

“This part of Texas holds a special place in our hearts. The floods have changed everything. Last week, we visited and donated an ATV, a twenty-foot pole barn, a chainsaw, a power washer, a generator, and other supplies to support the recovery efforts.”
—STEVE
For the residents of Kerr County, the Vinklarek family’s involvement has meant more than words, it has meant showing up, rallying support, and staying committed long after the headlines pass. HOW OLD VINE CAPITAL IS INVESTING IN PEOPLE, CAUSES, AND COMMUNITIES THAT MATTER.
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE WOOD
For Neil Kay, founder of Old Vine Capital, wealth carries meaning when it extends beyond financial growth and contributes to the well-being of people and communities. At Old Vine Capital, Neil works with clients on investment strategies designed for long-term stability, growth, and value creation. His approach reflects a belief that true success combines financial stewardship with a responsibility to give back.
That commitment is visible in the family’s philanthropy. Last year, their Fall Fête raised critical funds for Dell Children’s and the UGLI Foundation. The year prior, an event at Spanish Oaks generated support for families who had lost their homes in the devastating fires in Lahaina, Maui. Most recently, the Kays brought their passion for connection to Sonoma County, where their vineyard hosted a gathering that funded scholarships for Windsor High School students in the Vineyard Academy.
Philanthropy has been a central part of Neil and his wife, Anjou Ahlborn Kay, lives for years. Together, they created and led HackCancer, an organization that combined community with purpose, raising more than $1 million to fund cancer research and local clinical trials. The Kays

also support causes close to their West Austin roots, including children’s health and education, as well as initiatives that strengthen families and create opportunities. Their dedication reflects the same values Neil brings to his business, building trust, creating impact, and leaving a lasting legacy. Through every effort, they have sought to inspire others to step forward, proving that generosity has the power to transform both lives and communities.

• 1 turkey (about 12 pounds)
• 1 ½ cups kosher salt
• 2 ½ gallons cold water
• 3 tablespoons Mushroom Sage
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
• 1 tablespoon freshly ground pepper
• ½–¾ cup chicken stock, as needed
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE WOOD

Step 1. Prepare the brine by combining 1 ½ cups kosher salt with 2 ½ gallons of cold water. Place the turkey in a large pot, cover with brine, and refrigerate for 12 to 24 hours. If the turkey floats, weigh it down with a plate and cans.
Step 2. Preheat oven to 400°F. Rub 2 tablespoons of Mushroom Sage Extra Virgin Olive Oil over the turkey skin. Sprinkle pepper over the skin and inside the cavity. Tuck wing tips under, loosely truss the legs, and place on a V-shaped rack in a roasting pan. Tent the breast with foil.
Step 3. Roast the turkey, rotating the pan 180° every 30 minutes. After about one hour, remove foil and baste with ½ cup warm chicken stock mixed with 1 tablespoon Mushroom Sage Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Step 4. Check the internal temperature after one hour, inserting a thermometer into the thigh (avoid the bone). Roast until the thigh reaches 165°F, about 2 to 2 ¾ hours total. If the breast or legs brown too quickly, cover loosely with foil.
Step 5. Rest turkey 20 to 30 minutes before carving. Serve warm.

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?
The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.
Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.
“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”
Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:
SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”
Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:
“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”
Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.
This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.
“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”
Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.
This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.
To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.
