The Style Issue

There is so much here in our communities of Waconia, Victoria, St. Boni, and Watertown/ Mayer to uplift our spirits, boost our productivity, and ignite our creativity. As individuals, we can embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or perhaps explore familiar ones.

And today, I want to take a moment to celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. Style is not limited to the clothes we wear or even the accessories we add; it encompasses much more. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our existence. It is the thread that weaves together our lives and gives everyone else a glimpse of who we are.

In this issue, we explore the concept of style in all its dimensions. I want to thank all the people and businesses that shared their insight and expertise in all our feature stories for September. We chart a course to boat in style on the Lake. We fall into fashion with our mix-and-match expert and highlight all there is to experience on Nickle Dickle Day. We also feature some local finds for men in the area, and even our columnist, Jen Fortner, admits that when it comes to fashion: Mother knows best.

When it comes to style, I’m lacking, so thankfully, my wife regularly comes to my rescue. The best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.

Here’s to being uniquely you!

Set sail in style and experience the luxury and charm of Paradise Charter Cruises

Who doesn’t like a party? Ask around, and you’ll likely find very few people in the ‘no’ column on that survey. Elements that contribute to the perfect shindig where loved ones gather and memories are made include decorations, food, libations, entertainment… and, don’t forget, ambiance.

What’s better than toasting Tom and Sue in a swanky hotel’s gala room as they celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary? A re-creation of their wedding cake enjoyed on a beautiful climate-controlled cruise boat with luxurious seating and grand views. Gliding along on Lake Minnetonka on a Paradise Charter Cruise, you might just be tempted to shout, “I’m king of the world!” and you wouldn’t be wrong – because that’s how this hospitable crew makes you feel when you set sail with them.

Dave Lawrance, owner of Paradise Charter Cruises and Minneapolis Queen – a fleet of grand lake and riverboats that elevate private events and host tranquil public cruise tours – says that all of the heartfelt hospitality they pour into this “grand class service” (yep, you read that right, grand class service) is built around their customers’ needs.

“Paradise Charter Cruises and the Minneapolis Queen is a family-owned company built from the ground up. We have been in operation since 1985, providing grand class service on beautiful Lake Minnetonka and the majestic Mississippi River,” he shares. This is why when you work with their crew and step aboard the Paradise Destiny II, Paradise Princess II, Princess Grand, or Minneapolis Queen, you feel like you’ve been invited to a meal with the family, complete with divine cuisine and a welcoming host. This family dinner just happens to provide picturesque views and an elegant ambiance admired atop a gorgeous body of water.

Paradise Charter Cruises offers daily public cruise tours and private charters on a fleet of four different cruise boats with accommodations for groups of 10-125. If a relaxing narrated tour of one of Minnesota’s largest lakes and beyond is what you have in mind, their public cruise tours depart from the Port of Excelsior on Lake Minnetonka.

Throughout a 90-minute sightseeing cruise, you’ll be entertained with engaging, informative narration along with onboard concessions available for purchase. If you’re interested in spending two hours exploring, you’ll be served a full meal, depending on the cruise type you choose, an evening dining or Sunday brunch cruise.

”Full bar service, climate-controlled salons, expansive window views, and spacious sundecks with or without sun canopies are available on all of our boats, along with our experienced Captains and Crew,” says Dave.

For private charters, they’re known to host anything from corporate events and birthday parties to neighborhood gatherings and weddings. Ask Dave about the time when the bride and groom were picked up by a float plane soon after they said their ‘I dos.’ Just another day at the office. While planning your special event with one of their experienced Cruise Coordinators, you’ll have a large full menu to choose

from along with a list of custom cruise enhancements, including DJs, glassware packages, champagne toasts, music entertainers, magicians, and much, much more.

What makes Paradise Charter Cruises the true master of all ships is the unique experience they offer to each of their guests. “We maintain flexibility in everything that we do because we know that our clients want something different than a cookie-cutter experience.” And they believe that the best events are on the water. As you peruse the ways this one-of-a-kind service elevates any event or special outing with views, insightful commentary, and all the trimmings, it’s really hard to argue their point.

Ready to book your little piece of paradise? Simply visit them at TwinCitiesCruises.com or call their office directly at 952-474-8058. For public cruise tours, you can view the complete cruise calendar online and purchase tickets on their website.

My mother is something of a fashion icon. Everyone who knows her knows this. Even some people who don’t know her feel this way.

If I ever lost her in a department store, it was because she was busy telling strangers in dressing rooms what suited them best. They ask, and she does not disappoint. She holds little back in her style opinions, and she is always right. Her eye is so legendary I had a childhood friend say she manifests my mother when choosing accessories and follows her rule,

Life Minded

“Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take at least one thing off.” I had to break it to her that the advice and quote belongs to Coco Chanel and not to my mother. However, confusing the two is paying a high compliment to Coco Chanel.

My mother’s number one rule is to wear what fits. This seems like simple logic, yet I’ve noticed many don’t follow it. Including me. I have plenty of items I wear that are either aspirational (eventually will fit again), desperately need alterations (didn’t fit in the first place), or good but not great (spent good money on this and even though it looks weird I’m still wearing it). I’m no fashionista, just really stubborn.

She can, at a glance, make an assessment of what is good or bad about an outfit but, most importantly, what is appropriate for a person, a season, a venue. I did not inherit her gift. I’m better at preternaturally sensing all-butter croissants in close proximity in new locales. We have different strengths. I call her before I pack for trips, attend weddings, or have a special event. I often have no idea what to

wear and what shoes are proper. She knows and it’s faster to have her tell me than go on a treasure hunt in various stores looking for something I cannot name. She also is not influenced by trends. She says, “Just because it’s the style doesn’t mean it’s for you.” This is how I avoided both teased hair and the Forenza sweater craze of 1984. She saved me from some very unfortunate middle school photos.

My children, however, have fallen victim to trends. It’s a different time, and it can’t be helped. Between the dependence on phones and the rapid churn of what is in, it’s hard to fathom keeping current at their age, where they have a constant feed of new. All of them have a penchant for white shoes, which is unfortunate as they evidently walk through black dirt and sand daily. Our front entryway is filled with white leather platform tennis shoes. It looks like a nurse’s station if the nurses had all just done a mud run. And these shoes go from school dance to work to family birthday parties. In their world, dirty white shoes are appropriate for every occasion.

There used to be hard and fast rules around style things. Never wear white to a wedding. Never wear navy and black together. Match your handbag to your shoes. All bets are off now, and my children are reaping the benefits of the no-rules fashion rules. Even at home.

It’s been a long, rainy, humid summer. Our meals are casual and random, but my sons have taken to wearing shorts to family meals. Only shorts. It’s been a shirtless summer. It feels very frat house but with better food. It makes me a little crazy. But I have larger battles to fight, and I guess halfnude meals just don’t qualify at the moment. I don’t think it means anything about their character showing up for a burger with no shirt. But I do hope they know that while the world is casual now, it’s not a free-for-all. Appearances still count. First impressions leave first impressions. Will they choose wisely for what to wear to an interview? A presentation? A date? I hope so, though their summer wardrobes left me with a bit of doubt.  They need to call Grandma. She will know the right call. And they listen to her.

EXPERIENCE COMFORT AND STYLE WITH THE LATEST DECOR TRENDS OF THE AUTUMN SEASON

Everybody knows that September is the unofficial start of a new season. Even though the warmer temps are still present, the air feels a little different. Kids are back in school. Fall sports have started. And the return to an established routine has many families breathing a sigh of relief. This is also the time for the seasonal swap with home décor and a style that echoes the feeling of fall. If you have a home project you’ve been wanting to tackle, or you’re itching for some inspiration to help you discover something fresh and new, Chestnut Realty shares what’s on trend and the viral ins and outs you might see splashed across social media.

AL FRESCO

Yes, outdoor living is now a trend. Homeowners are more invested in creating an outdoor space that allows them to enjoy the beauty of nature in their front or backyard. Features like oversized patios for a hot tub or plunge bath, built-in grill, seating to entertain, extended decks, screened porches, and shaded architectural structures like pergolas. A lot of these outdoor areas become an extension of the interior of the home and allow families to interact, entertain, and relax together. They’re becoming just as important as the living room, family room, or dining table.

SIMPLE

Less is finally more. And considering the cost of everything, it’s nice to see a thrifty trend that positions your home to speak volumes without breaking the bank. You can command a space without an abundance of details—statement pieces that stand alone and take center stage, such as a unique vase you collected from an international trip, a handmade blanket from your great-grandmother, or a piece of art you picked up at a vintage flea market.

SOFTER

Warmer tones are on the rise: browns, beige, deep golden, and caramel-colored hues. After over a decade of cool colors, namely fifty shades of gray and all the jewel tones, a softer palette is poised to make an earthy return. You’ll see this in upholstery, area rugs, tabletop décor, curtains, and even painted cabinetry. It’s a new neutral that carries a richness and regal vibe. Cool tones give off a clean, crisp feel. But warm ones convey an intimate, inviting space.

MIXED MATERIALS

You may have grown up matching the curtains to the walls, the walls to the floor, and ensuring all the textiles paired well. But gone are the days of completely coordinating and having everything match. Mixing materials, patterns, and textures is perfectly acceptable. Weaving in a variety of materials can feel complicated and chaotic, but it’s more about the placement rather than the pattern. Be intentional with the flow but understand that creating harmony doesn’t have to be uniform.

“Less is finally more.  You can command a space without an abundance of details—statement pieces that stand alone and take center stage.”

CONTRAST

People are gravitating towards high-contrast elements and color-blocking that will stand out and grab your attention no matter the season. Black trim on the exterior around windows, dark-colored garage doors, a boldly painted front door, or textured backsplash in the kitchen. A striking contrast can often feel a bit loud, but start small. Add a large mirror in your foyer to create dimension or accent pillows that start a conversation. Even colorful or patterned dishes can help tell a story.

COZY

Your home is not a museum, and it doesn’t need to be carefully curated to look like one. We spend a lot of time in our homes. Thanks to the pandemic, we got a jump start on realizing that perfectly manicured spaces are not conducive to comfort. Instead, we’re embracing areas that we can feel safe, secure, and relaxed in. This might be as simple as changing out lightbulbs in your lamps or draping soft blankets over an oversized chair. Or maybe you swap staged and unused furniture for plush and curvy pieces that welcome lounging or a big round table where family and friends can gather in a circle and connect.

While the nature of trends means it’s ever-changing, and style can be very subjective, the overall feel for this fall is an influence that helps you create an inviting and inspiring space that also reflects your identity.

The precision to be perfect is out, and the heart of comfort is in.

Hurray! It’s Nickle Dickle Day!

Support local businesses (and snag a great deal!) on Waconia’s favorite day of the year

A fun little riddle for you… what brings tens of thousands of people to Waconia, features an exciting race of costumed rubber ducks, has been known to showcase all things pickled, boasts a park full of arts and crafts and food vendors, and is easily one of the community’s (and beyond) favorite days of the year? You guessed it– It’s Nickle Dickle Day! For over six decades, this popular, bustling event has brought people together on the streets of Waconia, solidifying what we already know–we sure do love a good festival. I talked with Christine Fenner, president of the Waconia Chamber of Commerce, to discover more about this dynamic gathering that celebrates local businesses, fun, friends, and family. So shine up your nickels. The 63rd annual Nickle Dickle Day is Saturday, September 14th, and it’s a pretty big dill.

HOW

DID NICKLE DICKLE DAY GET STARTED?

In the earliest days of the Waconia Chamber of Commerce, the Waconia business leaders created the event to attract people to shop downtown. In the beginning, bars agreed to sell beer for a nickel and the churches agreed to sell sloppy

joes for a nickel. Why the name Nickle Dickle? The word “dickle” is derived from a German word for bartering, which ties into how the day began. Today, the day draws 30,000 people to town to spend thousands of dollars at Waconia’s shops, restaurants, and bars.

FOR THOSE WHO MIGHT NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH NICKLE DICKLE DAY, COULD YOU SHARE SOME OF THE EVENT’S HIGHLIGHTS?

• Nearly 1,000 runners participated in the Waconia Community Education Nickle Dickle Day runs. • Hundreds of books were sold at the Friends of the Waconia Public Library Book Sale. • 460 antique and collector cars and trucks entered the car show.  • 380 basketball players on 127 teams entered the St. Joseph Catholic School’s 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. • City Square Park hosted 140 arts and crafts vendors and food vendors. • 80 ducks raced in the Waconia West Carver Rotary Duck Races.

Each year, we have live bands performing, and this year’s line-up in City Square Park is Mike Bustin at 8am, DJ Pickles at 10am, and Traveled Ground at 2:30pm.

Why the name Nickle Dickle? “Dickle” is derived from a German word for bartering, which ties into how the day began. “

Free Nickle Dickle Day stickers will be available at various locations throughout town.

The Nickle Dickle Day Medallion Hunt is in its 30th year! The Nickle Dickle wooden nickel is hidden in Waconia with clues released in issues of the Waconia Patriot leading up to Nickle Dickle Day (Pssst… the first clue will arrive August 29th!) The person who finds the medallion wins Waconia Chamber Bucks.

Behind the scenes, planning and preparations go on year-round to ensure the beloved classics remain while keeping the best Saturday in September fresh, energizing, and evolving along with our ever-growing community.

HOW HAS THE EVENT IMPACTED LOCAL DOWNTOWN BUSINESSES OVER THE YEARS?

The event continues to focus on promoting commerce, downtown, and our local businesses. This day was created for them, and many say it’s their best sales day of the year.

According to PredictHQ, in 2023 30,000 people spent $1.9 million on local businesses in Waconia on Nickle Dickle Day.

WHO ARE THE MAIN SUPPORTERS OF THIS EVENT?

Organized by the Waconia Chamber of Commerce, a notfor-profit organization, and the Nickle Dickle Committee, consisting of leads of each non-profit organization. The City of Waconia Public Works Department is also a strong partner in the setup and logistics for this event.

WHY DO YOU BELIEVE NICKLE DICKLE DAY HOLDS SUCH IMPORTANCE FOR THE COMMUNITY?

At the heart of this event is our local downtown commerce. The day is about contributing to the downtown’s vibrancy and character while highlighting our community! At its core, Nickle Dickle Day is about shopping, eating, and celebrating local. Over time, it has expanded to include numerous family-friendly and engaging activities for all ages, such as the medallion hunt, car show, arts and crafts, 3-on-3 basketball tournament, runs, book sale, duck races, live music, and more.

WHAT OTHER KEY ASPECTS SHOULD PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THE ROLE OF NICKLE DICKLE DAY IN THE COMMUNITY?

Nickle Dickle Day is a fundraiser for the Waconia Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau as well as a fundraiser for these other local organizations: Waconia Community Education, Waconia West Carver Rotary Club, St. Joseph Catholic School, and the Waconia Public Library.

Learn more about how you can be a part of this Waconia community tradition!
