WHAT DOES MOM REALLY WANT FOR MOTHER’S DAY? WE HELP YOU PLAN THE PERFECT DAY!

The Ladies Issue

I don’t know about you, but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life richer and more beautiful. They always tend to brighten the day, showing love, compassion, and kindness in whatever they do. At the same time, they can simultaneously roll up their sleeves, put on their bad*ss hat, and conquer whatever stands in their way. Simply put, our wives, mothers, and daughters are some of the most influ ential women in our lives.

And, of course, with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers, but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends, and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives — making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.

In this issue, we highlight the amazing women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role - connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to our local women.

They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.

My personal shout-outs go to my wife, Michelle, and my daughter, Tatum. Not only is my wife beautiful and kind with a killer smile, but she has flawlessly guided our family of five through many years of highs and lows, all while balancing a successful and meaningful career outside the home. At the same time, I’ve watched my daughter Tatum grow into an amazing young woman right before my eyes. The things she has accomplished at a very young age never cease to amaze me. Her inner and outer beauty is an unmatched combination, and I could not be more proud of her. They both inspire and motivate me to be the very best I can be.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to text, make a phone call, or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them. I promise, it will be well worth it!

A Spring WARDROBE REFRESH

Hear that? It’s the muffled cry and subtle yearning of your closet, begging for a springtime refresh. You remember what happened last time you went at it alone, so this go round, you need expert advice, and we have just the person. Our unofficial (but official in our eyes) neighborhood style guru, Eleece Pink, owner of The Stash of Waconia, is here to save the day! This friendly fashion whisperer is here to free you and your closet from what-to-wear panic this season with key trends, colors, and fabrics, plus the overall aesthetic and suggestions on the classics and must-haves. So open your laptop or grab a pen and paper, this is gonna be fun.

KEY TRENDS FOR SPRING

Stripe Hype: Coastal preppy combined with classic vibes — like Jackie O in Hyannis Port.

Boho Romantic: Flowy silhouettes with a modern flair — Sienna Miller on the streets of London.

Maximalism: Mixed prints and retro energy — Rhianna on any red carpet.

STYLE SAVVY ELEECE PINK OF THE STASH OF WACONIA SHARES HOW TO MAKE ANY SPRING CLOSET SHINE

PIECES THAT NEVER SEEM to go out of style ARE ESPECIALLY stealing the spotlight THIS SEASON. THIS INCLUDES THE classic Americana feel OF STRIPES, SWEATER VESTS, TANKS, AND BUTTON-UP COLLARED TOPS.

TRENDING COLORS

Light blush pink, powder blue, and pistachio

FABRICS

Crochet, linen, silk, lace

MOOD

Light and airy, but in a bold way. Eleece emphasizes that while there’s a traditional side of the spectrum for those who love to stick to structure and classics, there are also numerous great opposites with a variety of bold prints, assorted volumes, and diverse textures.

ACCESSORIES

Pearl details, western-inspired belts, charm necklaces (80s girls rejoice!), and fringe handbags and earrings.

MUST HAVES

A flowy whimsical top with soft ruffles or a dress crafted from feminine silk or chiffon will be perfect for date night, brunch with the girls, or a shopping day.

A classic sweater vest or tank that can be layered with a denim jacket or button-up shirt underneath (see “The Classics” below). These are great for a casual office look or pizza night out with the family.

A charm necklace to elevate and add some extra dazzle to any look.

THE CLASSICS

Pieces that never seem to go out of style are especially stealing the spotlight this season. This includes the classic Americana feel of stripes, sweater vests, tanks, and button-up collared tops.

Eleece stresses that you don’t need to go out and invest in a whole new wardrobe this spring because there are many ways to incorporate items already in your closet to create a trendy look while keeping true to your style. Do you have something giving 80s Ralph Lauren or Tommy Hilfiger energy? Move those to the front of your closet — as mentioned above, this includes stripes, sweater vests, and button-ups, but also add structured jackets to the list.

If you have more edge to your style, look for patterned items or anything with extra texture (fringe, suede, crochet, ruffles) to help create a cohesive outfit with a little retro boho flare thrown in. She says that stepping outside your comfort zone by adding a few new trendy yet versatile pieces will help amp up your closet’s style factor, breathe new life into your closet, and help you easily elevate your basics.

TEEING OFF IN 2026

A GLIMPSE OF THE EXCITEMENT AHEAD AS THE KPMG WOMEN’S PGA CHAMPIONSHIP COMES TO TOWN

In addition to its usual buzz of clinics, social gatherings, and play, June 2026 will bring another level of excitement to the turf when, for the second time in its history, Hazeltine National Golf Club will host the KPMG Women's PGA Championship. Participating in this prestigious event is an honor for all involved: players, fans, sponsors, organizers, and many more.

Sharing in this honor is Greta Siedow, General Chair of the 2026 KPMG Women's PGA Championship. "The mission of Hazeltine is to be a golf club rich in tradition, dedicated to hosting championship golf and delivering exceptional experiences." Well, get ready, because this elite tournament — one of five majors in women's professional golf — showcases some of the most impressive golf on a course that will test even the greatest golfers in the world. And it's coming soon to a golf course near you.

"This championship is the second oldest women's major since 1955," Greta shares. She explains that it was historically known as the LPGA Championship, but in 2015, the PGA of America and KPMG partnered to offer women wider-ranging television coverage and an increased purse size (nearing $11 million — making the title highly coveted by the 156 competitors). But it's not all about golf. "KPMG, the title sponsor, has enthusiastically invested in the tournament and ensuring it’s a highly elevated experience for all involved.”

Hazeltine isn't new to major championships, having hosted the 2019 KPMG Women's PGA Championship and two other women's championships, the 1966 and 1977 U.S. Women's Opens, among many other men's professional and amateur championships. They're also the only club in the United States selected to host the Ryder Cup for a second time in 2029 after an exciting competition in 2016.

Greta shares that 2026 will bring spectators all of the fun and excitement that come with other major championships.

“This championship is the second oldest women’s major since 1955.”

There will be grandstands, fan zones, distinguished hospitality and corporate offerings, complimentary admission for juniors, merchandise, and, of course, some of the most awe-inspiring golf. "We want the community to bring record crowds to support these incredibly talented women and have them experience the cheers and roars they all deserve. Women's sports are on the rise, and I hope this event continues to prove that our community always shows up strong."

Greta emphasizes that opportunities to host major championships are becoming very competitive, and given Hazeltine's position and ability to host these championships, they feel a strong sense of responsibility to the city of Chaska, the surrounding counties, and the state of Minnesota to continue to bring these coveted events to the community. To celebrate these amazing events and the game of golf, they continue to look for ways to give back to the community through the Hazeltine Golf Foundation and other charitable initiatives to make golf more accessible and equitable to all.

"We're looking at ways to introduce more women and girls to golf through ancillary events and hope this will help grow their confidence to pick up a golf club no matter their skill level. These endeavors are an integral part of Hazeltine's and the PGA of America's mission."

Greta believes golf is an incredible opportunity to be challenged, demonstrate etiquette, learn unique rules, exercise, conduct business, and spend uninterrupted time with friends and family. "The list of benefits is infinite!" As a young girl, Greta was fortunate to be introduced to golf by her dad, and she hopes this event will be a catalyst for what is already a growing sport in our state and community. "I know that after I get a chance to witness the best in the world play what I believe is the most difficult sport, I'm motivated and even more excited to get back out on the course! It's inspiring."

Interested in getting involved? Local businesses can support this event by purchasing hospitality, tickets, or sponsoring or donating goods and services.

The team will also be launching volunteer opportunities — they'll need about 1,100 pairs of hands — and public ticket sales in late summer or early fall. Keep your eyes open for these launches in the next 15 months on the PGA and Hazeltine websites, as well as on different media outlets and social channels.

“We’re looking at ways to introduce more women and girls to golf through ancillary events and hope this will help grow their confidence to pick up a golf club no matter their skill level.”

My primary extracurricular activity as a child was dance. I took classes as a four and fiveyear-old at a tiny neighborhood studio called Sharon’s School of Dance. I was the breakout star in the number “Teddy Bear Parade,” if you ask my mother.

Life Minded

At six, I got serious about dance, and my mother drove roundtrip downtown Minneapolis from the suburbs five days a week so I could pursue my passion. I spent the majority of 19771988 at the Minnesota Dance Theater, the premiere school in the state, which still flourishes today.

It was love. The training, the performing, the friends. Oh, the friends. I’m certain I made many teachers crazy with my gift for gab with my classmates. I regret nothing. I spent more hours with my dance friends than I ever did with my school friends. We performed at The Ordway and Northrup Auditorium, we met Prince and Baryshnikov in the studios at MDT, we had world-renown guest artists, and we took French language classes and Flamenco dancing. The dance theater was a complete world unto its own. Some of my most precious friendships were forged there, and those bonds are permanent. I learned discipline. I learned how to develop a rich inner life during hours at the ballet barre. I learned how to face challenges and disappointments as I either got or was denied various roles. I learned I really hate wearing tights.

But during the entire time of driving back and forth and dancing and missing things at school and coping with

Minded

bleeding feet and having no toenails for most of the mid-80s (not a popular look in high school) I had been completely unaware of one central fact. I was exercising. Nobody told me. The fact I had exercised at high intensity my entire life didn’t occur to me until I stopped.

Then, one day, I turned twenty-nine. I was pregnant with my first child and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Avoid that if you can. And apparently, the medical community thinks it’s important to exercise. On purpose. Regularly. This was very irritating news to learn. But I did it because my child’s needs come before mine and because I’m a rule follower.

By my third pregnancy I dragged myself to the health club even in the fortieth week. I did not have gestational diabetes that time, and I feel in my bones it is because of the exercise. So I went and kept going. People gave me adorable nods of approval as I lumbered up the stairs to heave myself onto the elliptical machine. I imagine they thought I was a fitness lover. But they were wrong.

I was thirty-seven and filled with weight and rage, and I did what I felt I had to do. Here is where lifelong discipline pays off. I did it, but I didn’t like it.

I am just not an exercise enthusiast. This isn’t a popular thing to say in a room full of people training for a marathon. I often find myself in situations where I’m in a room with people who are training for an insane run, bike race, cross-country ski event, or swim. If you want to compete, don’t challenge me. Actually, please don’t even invite me. I’m happy to sleep in and cheer you on and meet up after for a Reuben. But I finally understand the long game of movement. To feel strong. To maintain mobility. To stave off pain. To live well. So, I have found a formula that works for me, and I’m grateful for dance.

I do Pilates on a reformer once a week with an amazing friend/trainer. I do yoga at my local studio with another lovely friend/instructor. I meet one of my former co-workers nearly every weekend for hot yoga followed by hot coffee. I take long walks with friends and my dog. I go cheerfully, and I’m stronger than ever.

I am training for nothing. I want to stay as healthy as possible for as long as possible. I realize I keep showing up mainly to socialize. Like I did when I was seven. And I get in trouble only slightly less now for talking in class.

Let’s not call it exercise. Let’s call it wellness with friends, and I’m in.

Q & A Driven by Influence

Local women business owners share the people and passions behind their success

Dr. Jessica Radtke Maltez

Owner of Victoria Veterinary Hospital and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

“WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS?”

I wasn’t sure I wanted to own a business. As the daughter of business owners who worked long hours and were very driven, I knew it was a lifestyle choice that didn’t leave much room for other activities.

Working as a solo veterinarian at other clinics, I realized I had a passion for service. Because I care so much about my pet clients and their families, and my job didn’t end after my work hours were done, no matter who I worked for, I considered being

a business owner. I purchased Victoria Veterinary Care and turned it into Victoria Veterinary Hospital! I’ve always respected small business owners, especially women, because we often take on so much–with both traditional household roles and fulltime jobs. I’m happy and proud to know I’m a good example to my kids. They see me working hard and are a big part of my journey and motivation. I’m also inspired by my employees, who care so much and always go the extra mile to ensure our pet clients and families are heard.

“I’ve always respected small business owners, especially women, because we often take on so much–with both traditional household roles and full-time jobs.”

Heather Reichenberger Ashley Schram

Real estate agent at RE/MAX Results

“WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS?”

I chose real estate for a few reasons, but the biggest was the freedom it offered me to build a business that fit my life and my family. I wanted the ability to set my own goals, push myself to grow, and do something meaningful while still being present for my three children. Real estate allows me to balance my career with their schedules, giving me the flexibility to be there for all the moments that matter—school events, activities, and everything in between. The second reason was the opportunity to work in an industry I love—one that challenges me, excites me, and is constantly evolving. No two days are the same! Finally, I knew this career would be rewarding. Helping others achieve their dream of homeownership and finding the perfect home brings me immense fulfillment. Being part of such a significant milestone in people’s lives is what drives my passion every day.

Co-owner and founder of Schram Vineyards and Schram Haus Brewery

“WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS?”

My dad owned a bowling alley, and I grew up seeing what running a family business was like. I learned firsthand what hard work was, and liked the lifestyle. I loved the idea of being my own boss with no limits to what I could achieve. Being a business owner and choosing the unpredictability over the stability of a traditional career comes with a lot of uncertainty, highs, and lows, and you need the mindset that you can navigate whatever comes your way and embrace the ride. When I met my husband, Aaron, he told me his longtime dream was to start a winery. I perked up and said, “I like wine!” From there, we built our relationship on this shared value of owning a business and began dreaming about a winery together. We were excited to bring this kind of experience to Waconia. What an amazing community we are blessed to have stumbled into so many years ago!

Brooke Struck Dana Dziuk

Owner of Nice Shirt Co. Owner and President of Lee Lyn Construction

“WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS?”

When I couldn’t find high-quality, well-designed spiritwear to wear to my kids’ sporting events, I decided to create my own — and start selling it online! With a love for design and a passion for local spirit, I saw an opportunity to offer custom spiritwear that people would be proud to wear. Waconia’s downtown retail district is full of inspiring women entrepreneurs who encouraged me to think bigger. Their influence, along with the support of our amazing community, eventually led us to open our brick-and-mortar shop downtown on 1st Street — a space where creativity, connection, and quality apparel come together.

“Waconia’s downtown retail district is full of inspiring women entrepreneurs who encouraged me to think bigger.”

“HOW HAS THE MOTHER FIGURE IN YOUR LIFE INSPIRED YOU?”

I was blessed with a wonderful mother who was always considered a “stay-at-home” mom, but she was also a remote worker before it was even a thing. My parents started Lee Lyn Construction in 1980 and operated it out of their home office. My mom inspires me because somehow she made it look like she was simply taking care of us growing up, but she did way more than that! She was an entrepreneur who managed her home but also helped manage a construction company — one she helped create and continually worked to propel forward. She was always on the front lines but stayed out of the spotlight. She inspires me on days when it’s really hard balancing being a mom and a business owner. She taught me that if I take it one thing at a time, one day at a time, everything will work out okay.

Eleece Pink

Christy Haasken Schuler

Owner of The Stash of Waconia Realtor and Fee Appraiser at Chesnut Realty

“HOW HAS THE MOTHER FIGURE IN YOUR LIFE INSPIRED YOU?”

For as long as I can remember, my mom has shown me how hard work, no matter what that work is, can enrich your life in so many ways. She taught me that there’s no dream too big or too small and that nothing is out of reach. It was through her example that I learned that while the path you’re on might not always be the easiest, it will pay off if you keep pushing toward your goals. She’s always been by my side as my biggest cheerleader and has shaped me into the woman I am today.

“It was through her example that I learned that while the path you’re on might not always be the easiest, it will pay off if you keep pushing toward your goals.”

“HOW HAS THE MOTHER FIGURE IN YOUR LIFE INSPIRED YOU?”

My mother taught me to be a compassionate, respectful, hard-working, and caring person, which I’ve carried with me throughout my career in real estate. She taught me to always strive to be the finest version of myself. To push myself until I know I’ve done my very best. To be kind to others, listen to their needs, and treat them as I would my own family. My parents, through their actions, have shown me that sometimes it can be the little things that make a big impact on another person’s life. Showing others you care can be a kind word, a smile, or a hug. One of the most important things my parents instilled in me while mentoring me in my career is that every person and their journey is important.

WHAT MOM WANTS ON MOTHER’S DAY

Have you seen Mom? Yes, Mom is taking the day off. She doesn’t want to cook, clean, drive, or delegate. She doesn’t want to hear any whining, complaining, or fighting. And for one day, she wants someone else to take care of her.

Being a mother is a gift. It really is. But it’s also the kind of gift that comes with responsibilities, expectations, sacrifice, and patience. Oh, so much patience. I think most moms would agree there is no greater joy in life than their children. But it takes a lot of time, energy, effort, and love to keep her people alive and well. So, when the calendar gives them a designated day to celebrate all the incredible things they do, I think it’s okay if mom picks out what she wants (or doesn’t want) to do that day. After all, there are still 364 other days when she reports for duty.

Mom doesn’t want to set an alarm. And she doesn’t want to get up to take care of the kids in the morning. If the kids are old enough, then she wants to sleep without disturbance. Bonus: if the kids don’t even come in the bedroom

Mom doesn’t want to make breakfast. And she doesn’t want the kids making it either. While the sentiment is sweet, she doesn’t want cold eggs, soggy cereal, and another mess she must clean up. Consider grabbing her a delicious pastry from Bakery on Main or a specialty coffee from Ruby Roost Bonus: if you don’t even need to ask her what kind

Mom doesn’t want to make lunch. But she might want some quality time enjoying brunch or lunch with her family. This means making reservations in advance and simply telling her the time so she knows when to be ready. Try Winchester & Rye or Lola’s Lakehouse Bonus: if the kids promise not to fight while you’re out

Mom wants a nap or some uninterrupted time alone to relax or read. Let her pick out a new book at Chapter One and allow her to find her favorite spot to get cozy and curl up. Bonus: if you leave the house and give her all the quiet spaces

Mom wants to buy something cute for herself. Shopping alone is such a treat for a mom, so drop her off outside The Stash or Nice Shirt Co. and allow her to browse the shops she’d like to visit at her own leisurely pace. Bonus: if you slipped her a gift card alongside breakfast

We don’t know what Mother Nature has in store, but if the day is bright and beautiful, Mom might want to sip a mimosa or a glass of wine outside. Take her to Schram Vineyards for some charcuterie, cocktails, and acoustic tunes. Bonus: if you coordinate with some of her other mom friends to meet her there

Mom wants a thoughtful gesture like flowers or her favorite treat, a handwritten note, or a homemade gift. Bonus: it’s followed by a really good hug

But most of all, Mom wants to know that you appreciate her. You love her. And you wouldn’t be the person you are today without her.

If the mom in your life doesn’t want any of these things, that’s okay, too. It’s her day. Ask her what she’d like to do. And if she says, “nothing,” she means it. Let her rest, relax, and recharge. Bonus: you already have something lined up that lets her know how special she is

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful moms, single moms, step-moms, bonus moms, fur-moms, grandmas, aunts, and other women who play a mother-like role in your life. Let them know you love them and appreciate the things that they do!

“Being a mother is a gift. It really is. But it’s also the kind of gift that comes with responsibilities, expectations, sacrifice, and patience. Oh, so much patience.”
