Cherishing the Season of Connection

Dear Readers,

August marks the tail end of summer, a time when routines soften, sunsets linger a little longer, and families squeeze in those final memory-making moments before the back-to-school buzz begins. That’s why our August issue is all about the things that make this season feel so full: kids, pets, and the joy of shared adventures.

This month, we’re taking you across the country to Paws Up in Montana with travel contributor Anna Barnes. This luxury wilderness resort is the ultimate family escape. Think glamping tents, horseback rides, riverside picnics, and unforgettable bonding time far away from screens and schedules.

Closer to home, we’re spotlighting incredible individuals who are creating impact in both business and community. You’ll meet Tony Pec, the dynamic founder of Y Not You Media and The Circle networking community. From growing up in the Bronx to hosting one of the largest charity golf events on the East Coast, Tony’s story is about grit, generosity, and strategic growth and we’re thrilled to feature him.

We also sit down with Britta Mulderrig, the visionary behind Jasper, a platform that offers comfort and connection for people navigating grief. Her work is a powerful reminder that healing often begins with honesty and community.

And if you haven’t yet spent time inside Bedford Books, this issue is your invitation. Fran Hauser takes us on a tour through one of the most charming independent bookstores in the region, where families find their next favorite story and pets are always welcome.

We hope this issue inspires you to slow down, soak it in, and celebrate the things that truly matter. Your four-legged friends, wide-eyed kids, and moments that become memories.

Our publication serves the communities of Armonk, Bedford, Bedford Hills, Chappaqua, Katonah, Mount Kisco, Pound Ridge and Valhalla.

Working

Sum mer Strawberry Spinach Salad

Y SPINACH SA L A D WITH A HON

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALYSSA LAVY, MS, RD, CDN

Summer Strawberry Spinach Salad

INGREDIENTS

(serves 6-8)

SALAD:

• 1 C quinoa, dry, rinsed

• 6 oz baby spinach

• 6 oz arugula

• 32 oz strawberries

• ¾ C feta cheese, crumbled

• ¾ C pumpkin seeds, hulled

DRESSING:

• ½ C olive oil

• ½ C honey

• ¼ C balsamic vinegar

• 2 Tbsp balsamic glaze

• Juice from 1 lemon (approximately 3 Tbsp)

• ¼ tsp salt

• 1/8 tsp ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS

1. Cook quinoa according to package directions. Typically 1 C dry quinoa is brought to a boil with 2 C water and simmered for 15 minutes until quinoa is slightly translucent with a visible ring and all water is absorbed. Transfer to a bowl, set cooked quinoa aside and let cool while proceeding with next steps.

2. Wash and thoroughly dry spinach and arugula. Transfer to a large mixing bowl.

3. Wash, pat dry and cut strawberries into quarters (or smaller if strawberries are very large). Add to greens.

4. Add feta cheese, pumpkin seeds and cooked quinoa to large mixing bowl. Set bowl aside.

5. Add all dressing ingredients (olive oil, honey, balsamic vinegar, balsamic glaze, lemon juice, salt, pepper) to a medium sized bowl. Mix together with a whisk or spoon until all ingredients are well combined.

6. Pour dressing over salad contents and use a large spoon or a serving spoon and large serving fork to mix all components until dressing is evenly distributed. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Note: This salad can be stored in an airtight container and stored for 1-2 days. Since the dressing is mixed into the salad, it will taste best when first made so it is recommended to serve immediately.

This Strawberry Spinach Salad will have you enjoying the best flavors of summer before the season comes to an end. The strawberries, arugula, and slightly sweet and citrusy dressing are the perfect combination of seasonal flavor for this light yet satisfying salad. The quinoa, cheese and pumpkin seeds provide satiating protein, while the greens, berries, quinoa and pumpkin seeds provide gut-healthy fiber. Plus, this salad is suitable for both gluten free and vegetarian diets – and can be made appropriate for vegan diets by omitting the cheese (or choosing for a plant-based alternative) and swapping the honey for pure maple syrup. It’s the perfect salad for entertaining and enjoying the last of summer barbecues, poolside get-togethers and dinner parties under the stars!

WILD LUXURY

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF PAWS UP MONTANA

Why Paws Up Montana Is the Ultimate Family Escape

Tucked into the untamed beauty of Montana’s Blackfoot Valley, Paws Up Montana has mastered the delicate art of balance: adventure and serenity, wilderness and refinement, ruggedness and sophistication. But what truly sets this iconic property apart is how effortlessly it caters to families — elevating a traditional vacation into an unforgettable experience steeped in luxury, nature, and connection.

Just thirty-five miles east of the Missoula airport and set on a sprawling 37,000 acre working cattle ranch, Paws Up is more than just a glamping getaway. With vast open skies, the meandering Blackfoot river and dense pines, it offers a fully immersive Western experience while delivering amenities and service that rival any top-tier resort. And the accolades prove it: Paws Up recently became the only glamping property in North America to be awarded two Michelin Keys, which recognizes the resort’s exceptional hospitality, culinary excellence, and impeccable design. Well deserved.

What makes Paws Up so extraordinary for families is the range of accommodations. From lavish tents to expansive timber homes and secluded estates, everyone can be sure to find their perfect blend of comfort and nature. The property boasts

three-bedroom glamping tents, which are the only of their kind on the continent, to allow larger families to stay together while experiencing all the magic of Montana. These spacious dwellings come with en-suite bathrooms with heated floors and private decks overlooking the Blackfoot River or sweeping meadows. Personal camp butlers and chefs ensure that every detail from s’mores by the fire to elevated Montana-inspired dinners are seamlessly taken care of.

Adventure is the pinnacle of Paws Up, and with 70 outdoor experiences —the largest roster of any resort in North America — every family member can find their thrill. Grab your cowboy boots because days here can begin with a sunrise hot air balloon ride and end with a cattle drive at golden hour. In between, options range from fly fishing and ATV tours to archery, hiking, clay shooting, and even paintball in the forest. For younger guests, the Kids Adventure Club program introduces them to the Montana wilderness through scavenger hunts, geocaching, archery, wildlife education, and more allowing parents to enjoy an afternoon at the spa or guided wine tasting.

The culinary program at Paws Up is equally show-stopping as the landscape. Overseen by Executive Chef Sunny Jin, formerly of The French Laundry, the dining experience is a refined take on rustic, with locally sourced game, produce, and fish taking center stage. Chuckwagon dinners, hosted seasonally, feature fresh meat, vegetables, and most importantly huckleberry cobbler, are cooked to perfection over an open fire while the live music and the rushing waters of the Blackfoot River make the ambiance of the evening. Seasonal chuckwagon dinners offer an unforgettable feast, where dinner, and the star of the show— huckleberry cobbler—are cooked to perfection over an open flame. Live music, outdoor games, and the rushing Blackfoot waters make for an incredible ambience.

A stay at Paws Up is far more than a luxury escape — it’s a breath of fresh air and haven for memory-making where families can unplug and reconnect with nature without giving up the comforts we all want on a vacation. Whether roasting marshmallows under the stars, galloping through open pastures, or simply watching the sun dip below the beautiful Montana mountains, every moment here feels both exquisitely curated yet wildly free. paws.com

Grieving Through It

BRITTA MULDERRIG IS THE FOUNDER OF JASPER, A PLATFORM THAT HELPS PEOPLE PROCESS GRIEF.

TELL US ABOUT THE IDEA TO CREATE JASPER?

To know me over the last 15 years was to know my dog Jasper. Jasper was my baby.

Jasper passed away a year-and-a-half ago. During that time, two of my best friends lost parents. We started to have these profound conversations about loss and purpose, and also about “disenfranchised” grief: suicide, pet loss, drug overdose, and estrangement.

I kept wondering why it was so difficult to feel supported. Why is grief so taboo and so scary for people, especially in western cultures, to discuss out loud? I figured that if I am feeling this way, others must be too.

The current tools to deal with grief are static content like podcasts, and time-boxed care through therapy. These are helpful, but they are not always dynamic and fluid to our evolving emotional states during grief.

The Jasper app is a grief support digital companion that blends community, curated tools, and on-demand care. People can sign-up for sessions led by grief counselors, or chat privately with a grief counselor or community member.

TAKE US THROUGH YOUR JOURNEY TO FINDING YOUR DOG JASPER, HOW DID YOU KNOW HE WAS “THE ONE” (OR AS SOME ON TIKTOK CALL IT, YOUR “SOUL DOG”)?

I grew up in Fairfield County, Connecticut, where I went to public schools. After high school I went to the University of Tampa, where I studied PR and advertising with a focus on web development and design. After college I started working with Tampa’s pro-hockey team the Tampa Bay Lightning. A lot of my friends left Tampa after college, and I always knew I wanted a dog as a companion. I started looking, prioritizing finding a female dog. But something hit me when I saw Jasper.

I remember being in front of a litter of black and tan Maltese Yorkies (Morkies). He was going crazy, jumping up and down, so excited and so full of energy. I left with him that day, and he was by my side ever since.

After that we moved around a lot–to Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and eventually New York City with Google. I was excited to be closer to my family, who still live in Darien. An opportunity to grow Uber in Connecticut came to me in June 2014. I took the role and moved back to Stamford to manage Uber’s marketing in Connecticut.

Moving around never bothered me, because I always had Jasper. He made me feel like the most important person in the world, and I never felt alone.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE LOSING JASPER?

Jasper’s death was heartbreaking. I’m still not sure how I made it through.

When Jasper got sick, I was actually in the process of freezing my eggs. I found out that he had cancer the day before my retrieval.

While he was sick, I was incredibly lucky to have a support system, including my vet Dr. Shelley Skopit at Park Animal Hospital in Darien, and specialist Dr. Marnin Foreman and team at Cornell Vet in Stamford.

HOW DID THIS MAKE YOU REEVALUATE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GRIEF?

I always knew Jasper’s loss was going to absolutely devastate me. But nobody can prepare you for how viscerally that void is immediately felt.

After Jasper died I asked my therapist Stephen what I should do, and something that he said stuck with me: I would be doing myself a disservice if I didn’t truly feel my grief and work through it.

WHEN DID JASPER THE COMMUNITY AND APP LAUNCH? HAS ANYTHING LIKE IT EXISTED?

Grief is one of the biggest consumer sectors, as it’s something that everyone has to deal with at some point in life. But there is little to no innovation in this space.

Realizing how difficult it was to navigate grief in one place, I launched Jasper by myself with the help of a psychiatrist nurse practitioner friend. At first, I reached out to some people on Facebook and Reddit, and asked if they would be interested in joining.

“We want to be a platform for emotional transitions, supporting people across a lifetime of loss, change and resilience.”

And the interest grew and grew. One in five of our members come from referrals. We now have multiple virtual support groups around the world every day, talking about issues like early grief, opening up your home to a new pet, and navigating the new normal of routine without your pet.

WHAT IS THE FUTURE PLAN FOR THE APP AND THE COMMUNITY?

I recently brought on my co-founder Todd Sifleet, a former Uber colleague who is an artificial intelligence and natural language processing (NLP) expert.

We’re building an artificial intelligence component as a supplement, not a substitute for human care. This means counselors will be accessible, and support will be instant and available 24/7.

Pet loss is our first area to tackle, and then we will move on to other forms of “disenfranchised” grief: those dealing with pregnancy and fertility grief, loss to suicide and overdose, and non-death griefs like estrangement and identity shifts.

We want to be a platform for emotional transitions, supporting people across a lifetime of loss, change and resilience. In a time when bereavement is rushed and many losses are considered unworthy of support, we want to shift how people deal with hard things in life

“I didn’t just want to sell books. I wanted Bedford Books to be a gathering place.”

A Dream Shelved, Then Realized

For Fran Hauser, opening a bookstore wasn’t a sudden impulse or a retirement plan. It was, as she describes it, her "forever dream,” something she had imagined for years. In 2024, that dream finally came to life with the opening of Bedford Books, nestled inside a charming red barn storefront in the heart of Bedford Village.

“I had planned to open a bookstore right before the pandemic,” Hauser says. “But like so many things, those plans had to be put on hold. When this perfect location became available, I knew I didn’t want to wait any longer.” That sense of timing, combined with her longtime vision, guided her into creating not just a bookstore, but a warm and welcoming haven for readers and writers.

Hauser is no stranger to the literary world. As an author herself, she brings a deep understanding of the writing process and what it means for an author to feel supported. “Being an author has given me a deep appreciation for how much heart, hustle, and vulnerability go into writing and publishing a book,” she explains. “I

know firsthand how meaningful it is when a bookstore champions your work.”

Supporting authors has become a defining part of Bedford Books. From day one, the store has served as a platform for both established and emerging voices through book launches, signings, and engaging author talks. “I wanted Bedford Books to be a place where authors feel seen and celebrated,” she says.

The heart of the store, of course, lies in its carefully chosen collection. Hauser and her team treat curation as a living, breathing conversation with their readers. “I think of our shelves like a conversation. What stories are we excited to share with our community right now?” she says. She reads constantly, keeps a pulse on what’s trending in the industry, and seeks input from booksellers, publishing friends, and customers. The children’s section is a special focus, designed with families in mind. It’s a blend of classic titles, diverse perspectives, and books that spark curiosity and empathy.

“My hope is that people continue to walk through our doors and feel right at home.”

But it’s not just about the books on the shelves. It’s about what happens around them. “Books have always been a way into deeper connection for me,” Hauser says. “I didn’t just want to sell books. I wanted Bedford Books to be a gathering place. Somewhere people could come to be inspired, to learn, and to meet someone new.”

That vision is reflected in a wide range of programming. The store regularly hosts fireside chats, book clubs, storytimes, writing panels, and even one-on-one “Office Hours” for aspiring authors. “So many people in our community are quietly working on books, some published, some just beginning, and they’re often craving connection and support,” Hauser explains. “There’s something powerful about gathering with others who understand the writing journey. I think people leave those events feeling encouraged and seen.”

The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, and there have been plenty of memorable moments along the way. Hauser recalls a particularly touching one involving poet Jennae Cecelia, creator of the viral “I Met My Younger Self for Coffee” trend. After Hauser participated in the trend on social media, Cecelia reached out and included Bedford Books in her tour. “That felt so full circle,” Hauser says. “But just as meaningful are the local kids who stop by every Friday after school. They walk into town from the elementary school down the road and

have made Bedford Books part of their weekly routine. That tells me we’ve created something truly lasting.”

As for what she’s currently recommending to anyone who walks through the door, Hauser doesn’t hesitate.

"It’s a Love Story by Annabel Monaghan is the book I can’t stop talking about,” she says. “It’s smart, funny, and heartwarming—exactly what so many of us need right now. I love a good romance with real emotional depth, and this one delivers. Plus, Annabel’s a local author, and we’re hosting her at the store soon.”

Looking ahead to the store’s second year and beyond, Hauser is filled with ideas. “I want Bedford Books to keep evolving with our community,” she says. That means expanding the selection, deepening the programming, and continuing to be a space where people feel inspired and connected. She’s also thinking about launching a membership program that would help frequent visitors stay involved and discover new titles more easily.

At its core, though, the mission remains the same. “My hope is that people continue to walk through our doors and feel right at home.”

In a world that often feels increasingly disconnected, Bedford Books is a refreshing reminder of what can happen when people gather around stories. Whether you're browsing for your next favorite read, attending an author talk, or meeting fellow readers over coffee, this bookstore offers something far beyond the pages on its shelves. It offers a sense of belonging.

HOW TONY PEC WENT FROM SPEECH IMPEDIMENTS TO STRATEGY ICON, COMMUNITY CONNECTOR, AND “GODFATHER OF INSTAGRAM”

BUILDING A LEGACY, NOT JUST A BUSINESS

Tony Pec doesn’t just build brands. He builds legacies.

As co-founder of Y Not You Media, a Forbesaccredited digital marketing agency, Tony has guided over 1,000 businesses toward growth, visibility, and long-term impact. Known as the “Godfather of Instagram,” he’s more than a strategist—he’s a storyteller, a builder of trust, and a connector of people who believes in growing businesses from the inside out.

“I didn’t grow up with connections, money, or a roadmap,” Tony shares. “I had a speech impediment and a chip on my shoulder. But I also had a father who told me I could achieve anything if I put my mind to it. That belief was all I needed.”

That belief was tested in college when,

in the Bronx, where his grandfather owned a local pizzeria. Watching how his grandfather made every customer feel like family taught Tony that the heart of any great business lies in genuine connection.

That belief in the power of relationships is the foundation of his networking community, The Circle, which brings together over 200 business owners from across Connecticut and Westchester. With regular high-level events, The Circle fosters authentic, strategic connections that lead to real opportunities—not just business cards.

“I always ask, ‘Who can I introduce you to?’

That’s how we start to solve problems for each other and build trust that lasts.”

“YOU DON’T NEED PERMISSION TO BUILD—YOU

JUST NEED TO START.”

unable to land an internship as an engineering student, he decided to launch his own company. Tony’s Lip Care (TLC) may not have made him millions, but it gave him something more valuable: experience. From product design to sales strategy, he learned what it meant to build something from nothing. That first venture laid the groundwork for what would later become a nationally respected brand strategy empire.

Today, Tony helps businesses increase revenue, improve client retention, optimize pricing models, and identify new revenue streams. His consulting is rooted in the belief that great branding starts with clarity, consistency, and community.

“Story is everything,” he says. “It’s not about being the loudest—it’s about being the clearest and most relatable. People connect with people. When you build trust, you build a business that lasts.”

Tony’s own story is proof of that philosophy. He grew up in an Italian-American household

Tony doesn’t just give advice. He takes action. Every year, he hosts The Impact Charity Golf Outing, with over 1,500 attendees and more than 120 vendors. The event raises funds for Blythedale Children’s Hospital and creates a community moment that reflects his bigger mission: to help others grow and give back.

His reputation is built on execution and discipline. Whether working 15-hour days, speaking on national stages, or mentoring startups, Tony shows up. Every time.

Tony’s clients include fast-growing startups and established brands alike. In one standout case, he helped a $5M business tighten margins, improve retention, and restructure its offer— resulting in a $1M annual increase in top-line revenue. But he measures success differently.

“Success isn’t just about money,” he says. “It’s about helping others unlock their potential, watching confidence grow, and knowing the ripple effects of that impact will outlast me.”

CONTINUED >

“REAL STRATEGY BEGINS WITH CLARITY, NOT NOISE.”

He’s also transparent about the moments that shaped him. His early struggles with health, including a gout flare-up at 28, forced him to reevaluate his lifestyle. Today, he lives with intention—clean eating, regular workouts, and mental clarity now fuel his performance. He’s down 100 pounds and up in energy, proving that success is holistic.

“Health isn’t a sacrifice, it’s an investment.”

Tony’s final message for aspiring entrepreneurs? Start before you’re ready. Show up when it’s hard. Stay consistent. Be disciplined. And most importantly, lead with relationships.

“You don’t need to go viral to build something meaningful. You need trust.”

Tony Pec’s story isn’t just a business playbook—it’s a testament to the power of belief, hustle, and human connection.

Sidebar: Tony’s Three Core Principles for Brand Growth

Clarity: Know who you are, who you serve, and why it matters. A strong brand begins with a strong identity.

Consistency: Show up across every touchpoint—online and offline—with the same voice, value, and presence.

Community: Engage, collaborate, connect. Business isn’t built in a vacuum. Build authentic relationships that last.

WHISKING UP CONFIDENCE

Why Cooking with Kids is More Than Just Making Meals

ANIMAL Crackers

Ingredients:

• 1 cup and 2 tbsp white flour

• 1/4 tsp baking soda

• 1/2 cup oatmeal

• 4 tbsp honey

• 1/2 tsp vanilla

Steps:

There’s something truly special about inviting your child into the kitchen—not just for the cookies or cupcakes, but for the confidence, creativity, and connection that come with it. Cooking with your children isn’t just a fun way to pass the time; it’s an opportunity to build lifelong skills and memories that stick.

Cooking together also taps into something a little magical—memory. The smell of cookies baking or chili simmering on the stove can instantly transport us back to childhood. That’s not just nostalgia talking—science backs it up. Our sense of smell is closely tied to autobiographical memory, especially memories formed early in life. So those sweet, savory scents? They’re more powerful than you might think.

The key is to start simple. Let your toddler play with mixing bowls, spoons, and measuring cups. Begin with small jobs—scooping flour, flattening cookie dough with a rolling pin—and gradually add more steps as your child becomes more confident.

It won’t be perfect. Embrace the mess, stay patient, and focus on the fun. A dash of encouragement and a sprinkle of praise go a long way in keeping your little chef engaged and excited.

Over time, you’ll see the magic unfold: a child who’s not only learning how to cook but also growing more independent, capable, and proud of what they’ve created. And who knows? Maybe one day, they’ll pass those same recipes—and memories—on to their own kids.

• 4 tbsp buttermilk

• 1/2 tsp almond extract

• 1/4 tsp salt

• 1/4 cup whole wheat flour

• 1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

• Optional: add 1/4 tsp nutmeg or cinnamon

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

2. Put the oatmeal in a blender or food processor and pulse for about a minute, until it’s reduced to a rough powder. Add the ground oatmeal to the whole wheat and 1/2 cup of the white flour, baking soda and salt to the bowl of an electric mixer affixed with a paddle attachment, and turn on to mix. Add butter and blend on medium speed until the butter has been incorporated and the mix looks a little like wet sand. Add the buttermilk, vanilla, honey and almond extract and blend. If the dough looks too wet to roll, add the remaining flour 1/4 cup at a time until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the blender.

3. Turn the dough out onto a piece of plastic wrap and flatten into a disc. Cover completely and chill in the fridge for at least one hour, up to overnight.

4. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 400 degrees and place dough on a lightly floured surface (using the remaining 2 tbsp of flour). Roll out until 1/8 inch thick. Cut out with desired cookie cutters and bake for five to seven minutes, based on your preference. Five minutes will get you a softer cracker, while seven will get you a crisp cracker.

Enjoy!
