Kids & Pets

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits.

This issue is always one of my favorites. I suppose because of the immense joy that children bring to their families and the significant impact they make on their communities.

Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our hardest work and greatest investment and we are happy to highlight the best for Tulsa kids in this issue.

Secondarily, who could forget pets? The special kind of companionship can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends? The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.

Although children are of infinitely more value, what children and pets share in common is that they need us. Our care, attention and intention shapes how they are raised and who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the children and pets in your life this month.

Cheers!

ANIMAL EMERGENCY CENTER OF TULSA

BY ACRYLIC ASYLUM ART
PROVIDING CRITICAL CARE WHEN YOUR PETS NEED IT MOST

When our beloved pets face unexpected medical issues, prompt and appropriate care can make all the difference. Historically, the family veterinarian provided urgent care needs unless more advanced care was necessary. Today, two primary types of facilities cater to unexpected medical needs: urgent care clinics and full-service emergency and referral hospitals. Each plays a distinct role in providing veterinary care, but understanding their differences is crucial for pet owners.

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCES:

VETERINARY URGENT CARE CLINICS VS.

FULL-SERVICE

ER HOSPITALS

1) SCOPE OF SERVICES

Urgent Care/Walk-In Clinics:

• Focus: Provide urgent care services for pets facing non-life-threatening conditions requiring prompt attention but not full-scale emergency intervention.

• Services Offered: Minor injuries and surgeries (i.e., wound treatment), minor illnesses like mild gastrointestinal issues and urgent diagnostic services, including x-rays and lab work; may also provide limited stabilization for critical cases before referral.

• Staffing: General practitioners or veterinarians with experience in urgent care, alongside trained technicians.

Full-Service ER Hospitals:

• Focus: Equipped to handle a wide range of cases, from urgent/minor emergencies to severe trauma and life-threatening conditions requiring intensive care, major surgeries and hospital stays. Services Offered: Comprehensive emergency services including urgent care medicine, traumatic injuries, seizure management, cardiac and respiratory emergencies, critical care monitoring, major surgeries, transfusions and intensive care.

• Staffing: Dedicated emergency and critical care veterinarians supported by a team of skilled nurses and technicians.

2) AVAILABILITY AND HOURS

Urgent Care Clinics:

• Hours: Open extended hours including evenings, weekends and holidays.

• Purpose: To act as a bridge when regular veterinary care is unavailable and to provide convenient access for less critical cases.

• Triage: Based on urgency but primarily to handle stable patients with urgent needs not requiring intensive care or immediate surgery.

Full-Service ER Hospitals:

• Hours: Operate 24/7 for around-the-clock care.

• Purpose: Primary facility for immediate and comprehensive emergency care for the most critical and time-sensitive cases.

• Triage: Utilize advanced triage protocols for the most urgent cases that require immediate attention.

3) COST CONSIDERATIONS

Urgent Care Clinics: Generally lower examination fees than full-service ER hospitals due to their limited and focused scope of services, staffing and inability to provide hospitalization and critical care.

Full-Service ER Hospitals: Higher overall costs due to the severity of cases, advanced facilities, specialized staff and comprehensive range of services.

ANIMAL EMERGENCY CENTER OF TULSA:

PROVIDING FULL-SERVICE CARE 'ROUND THE CLOCK

Green Country pet owners have a vital resource in times of crisis: the Animal Emergency Center (AEC) of Tulsa. This specialized facility plays a crucial role in the community by offering urgent medical care to pets outside of regular veterinary office hours. Whether it's late nights, weekends or on holidays, the AEC stands ready to provide expert care and attention to animals in need.

STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY

Located in Tulsa, the AEC boasts a state-of-the-art facility and advanced medical technology, including diagnostic equipment for digital radiography, ultrasound and endoscopy, and an on-site lab for rapid test results. These resources enable the veterinary team to quickly assess and diagnose a wide range of medical conditions, facilitating prompt and effective treatment.

EXPERT VETERINARY TEAM

At the heart of the Animal Emergency Center is a team of skilled and compassionate veterinarians, technicians and support staff. These dedicated professionals bring extensive experience to every case they handle and provide high-quality medical attention, ensuring that pets receive the best possible care during stressful and urgent situations.

COMPREHENSIVE EMERGENCY SERVICES

The AEC offers a range of emergency services to address various medical emergencies that pets may encounter, including:

• Trauma Care: Treatment for fractures, wounds and blunt trauma.

• Poisoning and Toxicities: Immediate intervention for pets exposed to toxins or poisonous substances.

• Respiratory Distress: Management of conditions causing breathing difficulties.

• Cardiac Emergencies: Diagnosis and treatment of heart-related issues requiring urgent attention.

• Surgical Interventions: Emergency surgeries to address conditions like gastric dilation volvulus (GDV), foreign body ingestion and more.

• Intensive Care and Hospitalization: Advanced, around-the-clock staff and monitoring for inpatient hospitalization.

COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY

The AEC actively engages with the Tulsa community beyond providing emergency medical services by participating in educational outreach programs and offering resources and information to pet owners about emergency preparedness and pet health. By promoting responsible pet ownership and awareness of emergency veterinary services, they contribute to the overall well-being of pets in Tulsa and surrounding areas.

Standing tall as a pillar of support for pet owners facing unexpected medical crises, the Animal Emergency Center of Tulsa, with its advanced facilities, expert veterinary team and commitment to compassionate care, ensures that pets receive the urgent attention they need, whenever they need it. For Tulsa residents, knowing that such a dedicated emergency facility exists brings peace of mind, knowing their beloved companions are in capable hands during moments of uncertainty.

FROM CRISIS TO CONFIDENCE

E3 Risk Management Empowers Businesses with Scott Rumley's Vision

When Scott Rumley was just a child, a pivotal moment shaped his perspective on the importance of risk management, especially for a small business. His father's dentistry practice burned down one dark day — a devastating event that could have led to financial ruin, or much worse.

“I saw opportunities to help clients even further. It comes from the needs-based approach from my days in ad sales.”

However, thanks to comprehensive insurance coverage, his father was able to rebuild the office, retain his staff and continue his practice with minimal disruption. This experience left an indelible mark on Scott, highlighting the crucial role that proper risk management and insurance can play in safeguarding a business's future.

“The more I worked with clients, I found myself getting emotional. I mean, who gets emotional about insurance? I guess it goes back to my dad’s dentist practice burning down.”

Scott Rumley, owner of E3 Bookkeeping, has long been a trusted figure in the Tulsa community. With a diverse background that includes a pivot from radio and TV ad sales to obtaining an MBA from TU and venturing into the staffing industry, Scott has demonstrated a knack for identifying and addressing the needs of his clients. Under his direction, E3 Bookkeeping has grown to establish a reputation for providing high-quality, reliable bookkeeping

services to businesses in northeastern Oklahoma.

Now, Scott is embarking on a new venture: E3 Risk Management, which he feels is a natural extension of his philosophy and approach.

"Working in bookkeeping for so long, I started seeing opportunities to help clients even further," Scott explains. "It comes from the needs-based approach from my days in ad sales."

This new division of E3 aims to provide comprehensive risk-management services, helping businesses protect against risks and uncertainties, and is driven by Scott's desire to offer more holistic support to his clients. He noticed many questions he asked clients about their bookkeeping also revealed areas vulnerable to potential risks.

"I asked myself, what would bookkeeping work well with? Insurance is definitely one. Insurance feeds bookkeeping, bookkeeping feeds risk management and insurance. They are related and can greatly affect a business’s profits and losses."

E3 Risk Management has been operational in Tulsa for six months and running, with a growing client base and plans to expand across northeastern Oklahoma. Designed to be separate from bookkeeping, the two divisions complement each other and provide an integrated approach to managing a business's finances and risks.

"I’ve found that the only way to be successful in insurance, you have to really care. You have to be sincere, ask questions and listen to the client's answers," Scott emphasizes.

STRIVING TO SERVE WITH CARE

One of the key aspects of E3 Risk Management is its focus on building strong, trusting relationships with clients. Scott believes that by getting to know his clients' businesses intimately, he can better identify risks and provide tailored solutions. This approach not only helps in protecting business owners and their employees but also ensures downstream customers and other stakeholders are also safeguarded, which in some cases could prove to be a community service.

Scott's commitment is also reflected in his team's composition. Hope Rogers, Director of Operations for E3 Bookkeeping, has been instrumental in the transition, ensuring that the bookkeeping division runs smoothly while E3 Risk Management takes off. Scott's philosophy of teamwork and collaboration, which he initially applied in the staffing industry, is now a cornerstone of both E3 Bookkeeping and E3 Risk Management.

Looking ahead, Scott envisions E3 Risk Management not just as a business but also a service dedicated to the community.

"E3’s main objectives are to educate and to serve and continue building relationships," he adds. “By educating business owners about potential risks and providing effective risk-management solutions,

“E3’s objectives are to educate, serve and continue building relationships. By educating business owners about potential risks and providing effective solutions, we hope to alleviate some of the pressures keeping business owners up at night.”

we hope to alleviate some of the pressures that keep business owners up at night.”

In addition to offering personalized risk-management services, E3 Risk Management has partnered with the Smart Choice brokerage program. This partnership enables the company to write claims in any state, broadening its reach and capability.

Scott acknowledges the rarity of insurance professionals who genuinely seek to understand and build relationships with their clients. "If we do this, we’re going to need to dig deeper. Let’s figure out your challenges first, what we need to do and stay there," Scott asserts, underscoring the thorough and client-focused approach of E3.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE FOR GREEN COUNTRY

E3 Risk Management represents the next step in Scott Rumley's mission to support and protect businesses. Inspired by his father's experience and driven by a genuine desire to help his clients, Scott is committed to providing comprehensive risk-management services and making a real difference.

By combining his expertise in bookkeeping with informed and timely insights in risk management, Scott and his team are poised to continue offering unparalleled support to businesses in northeastern Oklahoma and beyond.

Scott Rumley hopes to continue serving businesses with his new venture, E3 Risk Management.

A Q&A WITH THE OKLAHOMA SUMMER ARTS INSTITUTE AT QUARTZ MOUNTAIN

Cultivating Creativity

Lilly Orr Seth Collucci
Students leave our program often feeling reassured that they are moving in the right direction in life.

Join us for an insightful Q&A session with Stefanie Leland, Marketing & Communications Manager, and two Tulsa-based students at the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain. This interview explores OSAI's vibrant community, unique experiences and its transformative impact on more than 230 young artists every year.

Discover how this extraordinary summer youth program nurtures creativity and fosters artistic growth in Oklahoma's picturesque Quartz Mountain region. For more information, visit Oklahoma Arts Institute at oaiquartz.org.

STEFANIE LELAND - MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

Q: HOW DOES THE MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH OF OSAI AT QUARTZ MOUNTAIN DIFFER FROM OTHER PROGRAMS AND PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE?

A: We hear time and again the multidisciplinary aspect of our programs aids in creating artistic depth to the experience for the students and faculty alike. Everyone who attends the Summer Arts Institute participates in community lab classes, attends faculty and guest speaker presentations, student performances and extracurricular activities outside their discipline. Students leave the program with an expanded idea of their art form and an appreciation for other creative disciplines, as well.

Q: TELL US ABOUT THE QUALITY OF INSTRUCTION STUDENTS RECEIVE AT OSAI. HOW DOES THE CALIBER OF YOUR INSTRUCTORS ENHANCE THEIR EXPERIENCE?

A: The Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute has sought out the highest-level of faculty both nationally and globally since inception, bringing the best instructors together for two weeks. By setting high expectations, the students elevate what they expect of themselves. Each day, students attend six hours of uninterrupted study in their discipline, allowing for exponential growth in only two short weeks.

Q: HOW DOES PARTICIPATING IN THE PROGRAM FOR MULTIPLE YEARS AFFECT STUDENTS' GROWTH?

A: We have had several students attend the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute for five straight years. While some attend each year for the same discipline, other students explore multiple disciplines from one year to the next. For example, a student may attend orchestra in one year and then attend photography the next. Another may take acting and then filmmaking.

Q: WHAT IS THE BIGGEST IMPACT OSAI HAS ON STUDENTS AND FACULTY?

A: All students attending receive a full scholarship, creating an environment where students of all backgrounds can grow and learn not just as artists but as people. Students leave our program often feeling reassured that they are moving in the right direction in life. Often, faculty comment on how their time with the students and their exposure to all the various disciplines has left them reinvigorated with a fresh new outlook on their own artistic journey.

Q: HOW CAN INTERESTED READERS SUPPORT OSAI?

A: The Oklahoma Arts Institute just concluded its 48th Summer Arts Institute and runs three main programs: the Summer Arts Institute for high school students, the Fall Arts Institute for educators and private-pay individuals and Quartz Preview Days. As a nonprofit, we rely on funding from the State Department of Education, the Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, along with individual donors. Readers can show support through donations, volunteering or contributing supplies. We celebrate our community of generous art patrons and supporters, and we’d love to welcome new ones! Join us as we work to guide and develop individual talent, enrich culture and engage communities across Oklahoma.

LILLIAN ORR

– CREATIVE WRITING & POETRY STUDENT

A creative writer and poet at Bishop Kelley, Lillian (Lilly) Orr has honed her craft and found inspiration through the enriching environment at the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute.

Being surrounded by diverse writers inspired me to expand my writing style. I also learned about publishers' preferences, which influenced how I approach or format my writing and poetry.

Q: HOW DID YOU FIRST BECOME AWARE OF OSAI AT QUARTZ MOUNTAIN?

Lilly:  My choir teacher encouraged our class to audition. While choir isn’t my strong suit, I discovered the creative writing program and decided to apply because I’ve always loved writing.

Q: HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU WERE SELECTED?

A: I screamed with excitement! I was ecstatic because I didn’t think I’d make it.

Q: HOW HAS THIS EXPERIENCE IMPACTED YOUR GROWTH AS A WRITER?

A: Being surrounded by diverse writers inspired me to expand my writing style. I also learned about publishers' preferences, which influenced how I approach or format my writing and poetry. The knowledge I gained at OSAI is invaluable. I learned things at OSAI that I would’ve never learned anywhere else.

Q: HOW HAS INTERACTING WITH STUDENTS IN OTHER DISCIPLINES INFLUENCED YOUR EXPERIENCE?

A: My roommate was in the orchestra. Watching choir and orchestra performances, I was amazed at how much they

accomplished in a week. It showed me that while our processes differ, we share similar challenges and creative struggles.

Q: WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING AND INSPIRING PART OF THE PROGRAM?

A: My insecurities were the hardest to overcome. Seeing others' work made me doubt myself, but I learned that everyone is unique. The most inspiring part was reading my poetry aloud and discussing publishing with my instructor.

Q: WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHER YOUNG ARTISTS TO JOIN OSAI?

We live in such a busy world that it’s hard to find time to dedicate to your discipline. OSAI allows you to spend two weeks on a gorgeous and inspiring campus and devote time to your passion while also making connections with new people you might’ve never otherwise met. It’s a truly life-changing experience that you can’t really find anywhere else!

SETH COLLUCCI – PHOTOGRAPHY STUDENT

Class of ‘24 graduate of the Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences, Seth Collucci continues to develop his artistic vision and technical skills as a photographer, benefiting immensely from the guidance and opportunities at Quartz Mountain.

CONTINUED >

Q: HOW DID YOU FIRST BECOME AWARE OF OSAI AT QUARTZ MOUNTAIN?

Seth: My photography teacher, Cheyenne Butcher, introduced me to the program. She was a former OSAI student and encouraged me to apply. During this time, I was also starting to take my photography more seriously and realized this program could further my art form.

Q: HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU WERE SELECTED?

A: I was thrilled and honored for this incredible opportunity to advance my art. I remember my heart beating so fast when I found out I was selected!

Q: HOW HAS THIS EXPERIENCE IMPACTED YOUR GROWTH AS A PHOTOGRAPHER?

A: OSAI challenged my technical knowledge and skills in the darkroom. I entered with years of experience but left feeling like my skills had doubled. The instructors pushed me to expand my capabilities.

Q: HOW HAS INTERACTING WITH STUDENTS IN OTHER DISCIPLINES INFLUENCED YOUR EXPERIENCE?

A: I gained a newfound appreciation for dance and chorus. Seeing such talented students perform broadened my artistic perspective and made me realize our shared humanity despite our different art forms.

Q: WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING AND INSPIRING PART OF THE PROGRAM?

A: Accepting that there’s always room for improvement was challenging but ultimately inspiring. I love learning and improving my own skills every day. Most of all, I love the challenge, no matter what it is.

Q: WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHER YOUNG ARTISTS TO JOIN OSAI?

A: OSAI is the perfect place to develop as an artist. There’s always room for artistic growth, and this environment fosters that. With such talented instructors and a beautiful campus, this is the perfect place to grow!

“Creating a relationship between you and your canine based on confidence, reliability and reward can turn a good dog into a great dog.”

“Socializing your dog is beneficial for both dogs and their owners,” says Taryn Tyler, a certified dog trainer. “It creates confidence for both dogs and owners and displaces the anxiety we feel when our dogs aren’t behaving like we want them to.”

Taryn says that boundaries can be learned by dogs of any age.

“There’s a nasty perception along the ‘can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ line of thinking,” she says.

“While you can’t take a dog with serious behavioral issues and completely turn them around 180 degrees, you can make improvements in how you understand your dog and how they understand you. Dog training isn’t just for struggling pups either. Creating a relationship between you and your canine based on confidence, reliability and reward can turn a good dog into a great dog.”

Taryn stresses that teaching a dog to sit or stay is less about tricks and more about the relationship that builds between animal and owner. “That, in turn, fosters an environment where the next time a family hosts Thanksgiving or has friends over, the owner and their dogs fall into the habit of obeying commands because of the confidence built through all the work put in beforehand.”

Even dogs with a troubled history can achieve improvement.

“We all love our dogs, but they can be stressful when they can’t seem to click in our home environments.

DOG SOCIALIZING TIPS:

• Socializing is more than taking your dog in public. A guy can dump a bunch of mulch in your driveway and spread it, but he’s not a landscaper until he’s following a plan. When the doorbell rings or a visitor comes into the house, what’s our expectation for the dog? When we’re in public and the dog’s attention is diverted, what’s our plan to refocus them? Socialization is 99 percent working on small steps as part of a larger plan.

• Socializing isn’t about our dogs being the center of attention in public. Everyone loves seeing a dog, but our best outcome for the dog is to go unnoticed. Sitting by our side, ignoring external stimuli, remaining calm— those are things we strive for when socializing a dog.

“While you can’t take a dog with serious behavioral issues and completely turn them around 180 degrees, you can make improvements in how you understand your dog and how they understand you.”

• When socializing dogs with other dogs, start small. Take a walk with another dog to get them to just exist in the same vicinity. Once they’re able to not be excited by the other dog, work on limited playing in controlled environments.

• If someone comes into your home, let them know what boundaries you’re working on with your dog. You can even suggest asking them to carry a few treats and work on some of the behaviors your dog is already comfortable with.

Once your dog is able to socialize with other pets, playdates are a great way to encourage good play behavior. One way to celebrate your pup’s birthday is to celebrate with their favorite furry friends. Here are a few helpful tips for making your gathering a success.

• Set up play areas for your furry guests to enjoy. This can include a doggy pool or splash pad, chew toys, frisbees, and don’t forget the pet-friendly bubbles.

• Offer party guests birthday attire such as a birthday hat, bandana or party outfit. Set up a photo wall for pet owners to get photos with their furry friends in their birthday outfits. Better yet, make it a costume competition, and invite guests to come dressed up ready to show off their pup’s attire.

• Create a treat display with a pet-friendly birthday cake and various chewy snacks for guests to give their pups.

• Party favors are a must to end your festivities with a bang. Fill party bags with bouncy balls, treats, and pet-friendly bubbles to send your guests off with a smile.
