DR. KEITH DENNING HAS A TOOLBOX FULL OF MIRACLES FOR YOUR BACK, SPINE AND JOINTS
In my 30s, my back started giving me major problems. With trepidation I went to a chiropractor, and it helped, but only for a short time. I went to practitioner after practitioner, trying all sorts of chiropractic techniques, until I found the one that transformed my back—and my overall health.
That’s why Restorative Spine and Pain is so intriguing to me. Restorative’s Dr. Keith Denning is an expert in a wide variety of chiropractic disciplines that actually relieve pain.
“People who don't know much about chiropractic think everybody practices the same,” Keith says. “That's
because in traditional medicine, if you go to ten different primary care physicians with a specific condition, they’re all going to prescribe the same kind of drug. It's cookie cutter almost.
“That's not who we are. There are dozens of adjustment techniques. Our assessment determines which one’s appropriate for you. Patients tell me our initial exam is the most insanely thorough exam they've ever had. We leave no stone unturned.”
Chiropractic cured Keith’s severe allergies as a teen. “I was sneezing nonstop. Popping Claritin like TicTacs,” he recalls. “Then, three or four weeks into my
chiropractic treatment, I no longer needed Claritin. With chiropractic, I realized Claritin wasn't my only option. That opened my eyes.”
Office manager Garrett Prince calls Restorative Spine and Pain “an extremely ethical means to finding people real solutions” without sending them into insane debt.
“Patients start at ‘My life is pain every day that I wake up,’” Garrett informs me. “They arrive at, ‘Hey, I can do what I want again. I can get back to living my life.’ To do that for less than an arm and a leg is almost unheard of.”
Keith practices traditional chiropractic, low force techniques, soft tissue mobilization—even zero-force methods.
I’ve personally spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on chiropractic, so I’m up on most modalities, but Keith lists some I’ve never heard of. MDT for instance.
“It can be completely hands-off,” Keith describes. “Some 99 percent of MDT practitioners are physical therapists. There are very few chiropractors certified in this technique.”
He also educates me about shockwave therapy.
“Other forms of shockwave therapy have superficial benefits,” Keith explains. “Stemwave is a focused, more specific shockwave that can penetrate deeper for healing things like chronic inflammation.”
For traumatically injured clients, Restorative practices Manipulation Under Anesthesia.
“MUA can be a less invasive, more effective approach than surgery for patients that are dramatically injured. With MUA, you're asleep. There is no pain. We're able to mix in a repetitive motion-based therapy called MDT. I don't know of anybody else in the country doing MDT in the MUA arena.
“So yeah, we’ve got a lot of tools in our tool belt.”
For readers who, like I did, fear or doubt the power of chiropractic, Keith shares an interesting and convincing statistic.
“Beyond the millions that have been helped, there's this: chiropractors pay less for malpractice insurance than any other physician I know. I pay less per month for my malpractice insurance than I do my two cars. Insurance companies know what injures people—drugs and surgery. In the world of risk assessment, Tylenol is more dangerous to people than what I do.”
What Keith does has resulted in 25,000 successful treatments. One of them is Michelle Gomez, the owner of 6 Degree Burn Fitness in Troy. An auto accident in her 20s left Michelle with chronic back issues, but after working with Dr. Keith, she’s pain-free.
“It allows me to teach kickboxing, bootcamp, cycling,” Michelle says. “He is amazing—one of the best chiropractors I’ve ever been to.”
Another patient who came in with constant excruciating pain—so bad he couldn’t function—credits Dr. Keith for ‘absolutely saving my life.’ A third, who found Dr. Keith after she’d tried every kind of pain medication and therapy, saw her pain reduced by 90 percent. “She wrote a 10-page letter,” Keith remembers.
What’s the feeling Keith gets from those success stories?
“Euphoria is the best way to explain it,” he replies. “When somebody comes in my office in pain having tried everything under the sun, they’re ready to give up. We're the last bastion of hope. It’s a feeling of euphoria to help a human being change their life. I'm a man of faith, but regardless if you are or not, we’re instruments. I'm just an instrument providing that love and that care, and letting the body’s natural healing process do the rest. But it's quite a feeling, I’ve got to tell you.”

Three years ago, former Troy police sergeant Josh Muhlenbeck discovered the rejuvenating benefits of testosterone replacement therapy.
“I was always into staying physically fit because as a police officer, if you didn't, you might not go home that day. One summer, I noticed my body fat wasn't falling off like it used to. And I'm like, ‘All right, let’s get super strict: calories, protein goals, macros.’ It just wasn't coming off. And I would only sleep an hour and a half. I was like, ‘What the heck is going on here?’
YOU’RE NOT JUST GETTING OLD, GUYS—YOU MAY SIMPLY NEED TESTOSTERONE THERAPY FROM GAMEDAY MEN’S HEALTH
“WE CAN TAKE YOUR 20-YEAR-OLD SELF AND BRING IT TO NOW. YOU CAN FEEL LIKE THAT GUY AGAIN.”
“So I got tested and I was low in testosterone. And I told myself, ‘All right, I'll try this for three months, and if it doesn’t work, I'll just come off. We'll see.’ I've been on ever since. And I'm not coming off. It helps with my workouts, injuries, sleep, cognitive function—everything just works better. I love it.”
Inspired by his experience, Josh retired early and opened Gameday Men’s Health, a testosterone replacement therapy clinic in Troy.
“I just want to serve. It’s helped me and now I want to help others. There is literally nothing better than helping people— it makes me feel so good. I'm knowledgeable and I can help.”
Most men associate low testosterone with ED. Josh says the symptoms are much more wide-ranging.
“You may have low energy, lower drive, feel down and depressed,” Josh lists. “Your eating and activity are the same but you're gaining weight. Or you gain it no matter how hard you work out or how healthy you eat.”
“Brain fog, too. There's a big mental component,” adds Gameday’s clinical director Mike Dennie.
“And then you get tested and realize you're just super low in testosterone,” Josh finishes.
I wonder what percentage of men are surprised that low testosterone was the root of their health issues. Mike says almost all of them.
“They don't realize because for them, it's been a gradual decline. Low testosterone is a silent epidemic. It drives the weight gain, low muscle mass, low drive, low energy, poor sleep, cognitive issues, brain fog, your words not coming out.”
Surprisingly, Mike says another sign of low testosterone is aggression.
“Testosterone calms you down. People don't realize that,” Mike informs me. “It’s the only thing that counteracts your stress hormone.”
“Yeah, it keeps me actually calmer, believe it or not,” Josh adds.
Mike says low testosterone is often not properly diagnosed or treated by doctors.

Testosterone replacement therapy can be a basic element of self-care as men age.
“When you have high blood pressure, you take blood pressure medication,” says Mike Dennie, clinical director at Gameday Men’s Health in Troy. “We’re kind of like that.”
Owner Josh Muhlenbeck continues, “If your car’s gas is low, you just fill it up and your tank’s full—you’ve got energy to continue. Testosterone is the same way: you need to keep your tank full, and when you get low, you’ve got to fill it up.”
Testosterone therapy isn’t the only way Gameday can enhance your health.
”We do sports injury medicine,” Mike says. “Peptide therapy will make you heal significantly faster by helping improve your body’s natural healing functioning. And if you use weight loss drugs, you’re losing muscle mass too. Peptide therapy can help prevent that.”
Their shockwave and GAINSWave machines can also make a positive impact on a variety of issues.
“Injuries, joint issues, muscular issues. It can help rebuild vessels and break apart plaques to improve blood flow. We have incredible solutions for men’s health in a mancave environment.”
“You won’t get diagnosed until your lab value is below 300. They don’t take age into account. Someone in their 20s, their testosterone should be 900 or higher, and they're coming in here at 400. For a 20-year-old, that's low. Yet it’s not taken seriously. I get patients who are like, ‘I don't want to even discuss this with my doctor.’ Most physicians aren’t trained to identify the symptoms related to aging as reduced testosterone.”
Gameday is a medical clinic, but with a mancave vibe. Getting tested is free and quick: you get results on-site in less than 15 minutes. Then Mike goes over the results with you. “We're not a patient mill,” Josh adds. “You can sit with Mike as long as you want.”
Testosterone injection appointments just take a minute. Gameday will even train you to inject yourself at home. Mike says the injections can end the desperate solution cycle.
“Caffeine. Energy drinks. Sleep meds. Pills for depression, for ED. When you correct testosterone levels, you see these men awaken. You can see it in their expression, their posture. It's absolutely amazing how much fixing this hormone imbalance improves their life.”
I talk to one of those men: Alex, a police officer. When he turned 50, Alex started struggling with brain fog. “You don’t have that clarity. It’s almost like a traffic jam going on in your mind,” Alex recalls.
Alex said Gameday’s therapy “just clears everything up for you. You recover fast from exercise. There’s pep in your step, kind of like when you’re 20 or 30 years old. And with the brain fog gone, you’re able to make your decisions faster, clearer. You just feel better overall. It’s quality of life.”
Mike says the benefits of Gameday’s therapy go beyond relief of symptoms.
“It's really about long-term health. The number one thing for longevity is keeping your muscle mass into your 80s and 90s. And you're not going to do that without proper testosterone. It’s a fountain of youth in a bottle for men.”
I want to sum up the Gameday Men’s Health experience in one sentence. Josh gives me the words.
“We can take your 20-year-old self and bring it to now,” Josh declares. “You can feel like that guy again.”

The local cycling community was out of options—until Revolve Cycling rode in to rescue them
Local cycling enthusiasts might remember late 2023 as a dark time.
“Cycling studios in Troy, Bloomfield Hills and Rochester Hills all closed unexpectedly,” Kendra McKenzie tells me. She’s one of the founders of Revolve Cycling in Troy, along with Jillian Kuras and Jillian’s father, Dennis Mitchell.
The abrupt closings left the cycling community in mourning and without options.
“There was this giant sense of loss in not having a place to see each other, let alone work out,” Kendra recalls.
“It was a really strong community,” Dennis agrees. He and his wife Mary were regular riders too.
Kendra remembers, “I said, 'It's not over. We're going to open our own studio.' I threw it out into the universe: we had to do it. There was a hole that needed to be filled.”
“And here we are,” Dennis finishes. He and Mary put up the capital to make Revolve a reality. “We feel so proud and fortunate to be able to make this new community happen."
Before they were cycling instructors, Jillian and Kendra started as riders.
“I took my first class in 2015,” Jillian tells me. “I had just gotten into fitness, but don't ask me to run on a treadmill. I tried this cycling class—and it was the most fun I had ever had working out. And then a local studio held open auditions. I fell into it.”
Kendra remembers turning 40 and thinking, "'Wouldn't that be cool if you got in shape?' Then COVID happened and I needed somewhere to go. I started cycling and fell in love. I was there all the time.”
Kendra says cycling wasn’t easy at first.
“I had never worked out in my life—never ever ever. It was so hard in the beginning. But the music was so fun and the people were so nice that I kept coming back. And every time I would leave
that studio, I felt better about myself and my life. That's what I tell people when I’m teaching: you're going to walk out feeling better than when you walked in, every single time."
Traditional cycling can be very harsh and judgy, says Jillian— instructors yelling to motivate, people feeling unwelcome because of their body type or their age.
“That's not us. We greet every person with kindness. And our instructors teach all different fitness levels in our workouts. We have riders aged 11 to 70 in the same class, and everybody gets something out of it.”
“On a weekend,” Kendra adds, “we might have a coffee bar set up or a featured vendor. It's not just about riding. It's also about hanging out.”
What’s the process like for new Revolve riders?
“We provide the towels and the shoes that clip into the bikes,” Jillian informs me. “Your instructor knows you’re coming. When you arrive, you get a tour of the studio. We usually have your locker decorated, if it's your first ride.
“The next 45 minutes, the music is blaring, adrenaline starts pumping and we're going. But you're not left out if you’re not doing every single piece. You do what’s best for you and nobody is going to judge.”
Andrea Sandoval and Chelsea Rosenberg are longtime cyclists who joined Revolve when it opened. Andrea calls Revolve amazing: "They're always super-excited to see you walk through the door.”
What Chelsea loves most about Revolve is the community. “I’ve tried other places, but Revolve is the most inclusive and supportive. And they’re really intense workouts, but I brought my boyfriend and my mom, who is 61 years old. They had never done anything like this before, and they both love it now.”
“We're rhythm-based cycling,” Kendra answers. “Every class is a fresh playlist. You ride to the beat of the songs. You might find instructors where you just really vibe with their taste in music.”
What’s the most rewarding aspect of opening Revolve?
“The hugs from people that were just as excited for us to open as we were,” Jillian declares. For Kendra, it’s “all of those riders who missed this. They needed this community back."
I wonder what’s moved them the most since they’ve opened.
”We have a client,” Kendra says, “who’s not a workout enthusiast, with young kids at home—similar to my story. When she saw that first rider's name go up on our wall for making 100 rides, she was like, ‘I'm going to be right there.’ She was our third member to complete 100 rides.” As of Thanksgiving, four Revolve riders have hit the 100 mark.
Jillian recalls a rider at her previous cycling studio.
“After our last ride there, we were saying goodbye, and one member hugged me, sobbing. I felt the same way, but I told her, ‘It's going to be okay.’ She was one of the first people in the door when we reopened.”
The instructors are as grateful for Revolve as their members. Kendra recalls one instructor's husband observing, ‘The light was gone from you. And when this new studio became real, the light came back into you. Like you were back.’”
“I have tears remembering,” Jillian says quietly.
“It's a life-changing place, for us and for our members,” Kendra concludes. “Every day.”
Your first ride is free. To check out Revolve, visit revolvecyclingmi.com or call (248) 422-6323.
Revolve is changing the idea of what group fitness looks and feels like. Indoor cycling should be accessible, inclusive and, most of all, fun.
