DIY FLORAL DESIGN: ELEVATE YOUR HOME DECOR WITH THESE CREATIVE ARRANGEMENTS
Welcome to our Ladies' Issue! This issue is, hands down, one of my favorites of the year because I love supporting strong, powerful women. Our wives, mothers, and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives.
And, of course, with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have impacted us indelibly. It’s the family members, teachers, friends, and neighbors doing extraordinary things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.
While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize women-owned businesses in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role - connecting with and championing the best of the best regarding our Trophy Club + Westlake women.
They are movers and shakers, builders, and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.
I hope you’ll take a few minutes to text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

MEET THIS MONTH’S CURATOR
Samantha Farris | @Shesmyskyphotog
Our goal this month is to inspire, encourage, and celebrate women. All women. For just as a sunflower can never be a rose, and a tulip can never be a lilly, they are all still beautiful. In the same way, you don’t have to be a mom, start a women-owned business, or be the top female in your company or profession to be worthy of honor and appreciation. Flowers don’t think of competing with the flowers around them, they just bloom in their own time. And we hope you will make the time this month to show your love and appreciation for the women in your life.
OF INFLUENCE
ARTICLE BY JAY GRISHAMPHOTOGRAPHY BY WILLIAM
ANTHONY STAHL PHOTOGRAPHY AND JOSEPH LLANES
We asked Dr. Lisa Medwedeff of Village Internal Medicine Group in Plano about her journey to becoming a doctor and opening up her own female-owner medical practice.
Q: WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A PHYSICIAN AND PURSUE A SOLO PRACTICE?
A: A love and aptitude for science led me to medicine, but I pursued it when I discovered I had a sensitivity that allowed me to connect with people in need in a meaningful way. While working as a volunteer at a respite home for autistic children, I found my gift for connecting and effectively working with the special needs children and their parents who were often overwhelmed. It was the first time I experienced being sought after and respected for my ability to affect lives. When in residency, I had an amazing elderly and wise woman say to me after hearing the vision for my practice, “What you want to do is unique and you will never be permitted in a big practice or a hospital setting, you must start your own practice”. I knew she was right and when doors opened for me, I courageously went through them. It was incredibly challenging and at times I wondered why I chose such a tough path, but now I have a wonderful team who are all just as called to make a difference in patients’ lives as I am.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO PATIENT CARE AND WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT IT?
A: My approach is compassionate and comprehensive. I want to know my patient’s overall health, understanding of their health and the factors in their life that are having an impact on wellbeing, both mentally and physically. Not just the current problem that brought them in. This is what separates me from a specialist or an urgent care provider. I practice evidence-based medicine and believe that prevention is better than the cure. How I approach patient care is also what I find most rewarding, often I feel like the equivalent of Sherlock Holmes.
Q: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO EXPAND YOUR PRACTICE TO INCLUDE AESTHETICS AND HOW DOES IT COMPLEMENT YOUR WORK AS A PHYSICIAN?
A: With the advancements in the science of skin rejuvenation and the relative ease of the treatment with such long standing and amazing outcomes, I wanted to be a part of providing these services to my patients. The impact that improving one’s appearance can have on their life is transforming. A person’s appearance can be a factor in their depression and anxiety, and therefore improving their appearance has therapeutic value. One of my best examples is a patient nearest and dearest to my heart, my sister. She was treated with Scarlet microneedling with radiofrequency to improve the health of her skin and the transformation took years off her appearance. We won a national before and after photo competition with her outcome. But, her joy and the improvement in her confidence was amazing. It opened new doors in her life.
Q: WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG WOMEN ASPIRING TO PURSUE A CAREER IN MEDICINE OR ANY MALE-DOMINATED FIELD?
A: If you have a love of science and you want to make a difference in people’s lives, then medicine should be a strong consideration. Women, by our nature, are well suited for medicine and we need more women. Studies have shown that our approach encourages patients to be more open and to talk more. I have been studying and practicing medicine for 3 decades and I continue to grow and love it more with each passing year. The old adage is true, when you love your job, you never work a day in your life!

Country music artist Deanna Wheeler has used her powerful voice to share her life experiences about her journey to music and inspire the next generation of up and coming female artists.
Q: WHEN DID YOU START SINGING AND KNOW THAT THIS IS THE CAREER FOR YOU?
A: When I was four years old I bought a little karaoke machine with my own money and sang “I Saw The Light” by Wynonna Judd at a 4th of July block party. They nicknamed me Little Reba and that experience sparked the fire I have for singing and performing. My professional career started seven years ago when I went to a show and asked the band that was playing if I could sing with them. The band declined and said it doesn’t work that way. When I found out the band members were all military veterans (which I am also) I saw an opening to get my foot in the door with them. After their show, we did a jam session and they asked me to sing for their upcoming 4th of July show. I was signed by a producer and promoter three days later, and the rest is history!
Q: HOW DO YOU HANDLE “FAILURE” AND WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM IT?
A: I literally fail every day, but I don’t stay there. I tell my children constantly that we are all meant to fail before we fly! We fail, then we figure out what we can do to change, and then we try again. We appreciate the journey to find our successes.
Q: WHAT ELSE ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT OTHER THAN MUSIC?
A: My kids! Having fun family experiences is my main focus. I love taking them outdoors and showing them their way through nature. I am a water baby, if it’s on the water (fishing, boating, jet ski, tubing, etc.) count me in!

Q: HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR PASSION FOR MUSIC WITH WORK AND YOUR FAMILY LIFE?
A: I try to have individual projects with each of my kids, so one might want to make a YouTube video and the other one might want to make jewelry or write songs together. It’s truly beautiful.
Q: WHO HAS INSPIRED OR MENTORED YOU ALONG THE WAY?
A: My music inspirations are all across the board. I love Reba for her storytelling ability and the fact that women flock to her show. And I love her twang and rasp, yet she has sharp vocals you can cut with a knife. And I have always loved Stevie Nicks. Her style and mindset is going to the beat of her own drum at all times and I’m here for it!
Q: WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG WOMEN ASPIRING TO PURSUE A CAREER IN MUSIC?
A: I would just say to keep going. You may only have eight people at your gig, but play to those eight people like it was their own personal concert. And stay accessible by talking to people, because connection is the cure and music is the universal connector.
Q: WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE NEXT FROM YOU?
A: My music video “Chasin’ Dirt Roads” premieres in May and the song will be going to nationally syndicated radio soon too! Other than that, my new album is full of experience, heart and determination and has a song about female first responders and women alike. And I’m in the process of writing a book about my life.

Since 1987, Grapevine Relief And Community Exchange (GRACE) has remained dedicated to its mission to assist individuals and families in crisis and guidance toward self-sufficiency.
What began as a small collaboration between a few churches and civic leaders grew into a well-established, independent relief agency that provides our community with a safety net of support through a wide range of staff-supported programs. GRACE programs include a self-select food pantry, emergency financial assistance for rent/ utilities, a community medical clinic, a clothing room, children’s programming, senior services, and transitional housing.
As all these programs are designed to be temporary, every potential client must first meet with a caseworker before receiving services. At intake, GRACE caseworkers conduct an in-depth assessment which includes questions about the client’s family size, housing situation, education level, job skills, employment, medical insurance, income, and expenses. This process allows GRACE to properly assess the family’s situation, allocate the appropriate amount of services, and provide goals to guide the client back to self-sufficiency.
“GRACE programs include a self-select food pantry, emergency financial assistance for rent/utilities, a community medical clinic, a clothing room, children’s programming, senior services, and transitional housing.”
“Clients received a personalized but strict case management plan that includes individual financial goals, employment requirements, educational requirements, and other various goals that will help the client learn or relearn how to be independent.”
The GRACE Transitional Housing program is for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. GRACE provides housing while clients find work, regain financial stability, and learn new skills. Almost all clients who participate in the Transitional Housing program are women who have experienced a sudden financial change or are seeking freedom from a dangerous environment. While clients generally remain in the program for 18-24 months, GRACE requires all clients entering this program to commit to a minimum of six months.
This program, while full of opportunity, is not easy. From intake, each client agrees to a criminal history check, remain drug-free during the duration of the program, attend regular meetings with case managers, maintain employment, attend school or retraining, manage a weekly/monthly budget, and if necessary attend counseling sessions.
Clients received a personalized but strict case management plan that includes individual financial goals, employment requirements, educational requirements, and other various goals that will help the client learn or relearn how to be independent.
GRACE case managers act as mentors encouraging each of the women to make wise choices, and teaching them to look ahead and prepare for the unknown. Their guidance combined with the client’s determination has led to extraordinary outcomes and heartwarming testimonies.
One of GRACE Transitional Housing’s recent graduates is Heather Woodard. Here is a glimpse of her story:
“When I first came to GRACE I knew it was going to be a fresh start for me and my girls for a better future. My emotions were all over the place. I had been through a lot of trauma so I knew this program was the place for me to get the therapy I needed to heal. GRACE made me believe in myself. I hit rock bottom and they helped me get my life back in order. I’ve had emotional support and financial support in the program. My kids and I feel so much love from GRACE.”

Once you learn the basics, flower arranging can be both fun and simple. With a bit of planning and some careful preparation, you too can create a beautiful centerpiece. Here are some expert tips on creating and maintaining gorgeous flower arrangements.
One of the easiest ways to make a floral arrangement look cohesive is to choose colors that are close to one another on the color wheel. Monochromatic schemes, which show off the variety of different hues of the same color, can be striking. Or for a high-impact floral design,
ARTICLE BY JAY GRISHAMtry complementary colors that will pop against each other. Select flowers based on what’s currently blooming in your garden or what you can find at the local market. Three types of flowers you should include in an arrangement are spillers, fillers and thrillers. Spillers bring movement by drawing your eye through the arrangement like snapdragons, jasmine and delphiniums. Fillers are flowers that have multiple stems, leaves, or greens, and add mass and texture without stealing the show, such as lemon leaf, hydrangeas and viburnum.
The thrillers are the big focal flowers usually placed in the center, or perhaps slightly off center of your arrangement, like garden roses, peonies, dahlias, and tulips. For thrillers, it’s best to use odd numbers. The mind and the eye like odd numbers because it can find a middle, so keep that in mind.
When selecting a vase or other container, consider the type of flowers you’re using. Tulips typically require the support of a straight-sided vase, for example, while tall branches or top-heavy flowers might need a
weighted vessel. If the flowers don’t have a sturdy foundation, they won’t stay in place and your arrangement will end up falling apart. Floral foam is useful but not environmentally friendly, so use a flower frog or try working with floral tape by creating a grid over the mouth of the vase and sticking the stems through the holes of the grid to keep them in place instead. Flowers should be one and a half to two times the height of their vase or one and a half times the height for bowl-shape and small cube containers.
The moms and the mother figures in our lives mean everything to us. They deserve the best every day, of course. But at least one day out of the year, we get to shower them with the same love and thoughtfulness they give to us so selflessly.
This year, we hope you’ll consider some memorable ways to make lasting memories with the mom or mother figure in your life. If you haven’t already planned something special, take a look at our list of ideas and circle your favorites. If you have kids, let them join in the fun too!
Whether you decide to spend a day at home or enjoy a day on the town, these innovative celebration ideas will include fun for the whole family and make Mom feel loved. Whatever activity or surprise you land on to show your mom, wife, sister or maternal figure your appreciation for all they do, the most important thing is that you all get to spend some quality time together.
Take a Flower Arranging Class Mother’s Day arrives just as spring is in full bloom. Take advantage of the season by going to a flower arranging class with mom.
If Mom likes strategizing, challenge her to a friendly board game competition. (And, no, you don’t have to let her win just because it’s Mother’s Day.)
This activity is especially fun if you have a lot of kids who want to get in on the action. Then, when you all get home, you can whip up a treat for Mom with your selections. (Maybe give her a strawberry in a Champagne glass while she waits.)
There’s no day like Mother’s Day to be impulsive! Book a weekend trip for the two of you at a cute B&B in a city Mom has always wanted to visit.
Find a puzzle with an image you know your mom will love (or make a custom one using a photo of the two of you) and put it together over wine and snacks. You’ll be amazed at how much chatting you can get done while puzzling.
Go to a play or a musical — lots of towns even host outdoor theater events.
Whether you make the brews and treats yourself or head out to an official tea house, Mom will love sipping her beverage out of fancy china and snacking on tea sandwiches.
