INSPIRATION FROM THE FLOOR UP

Getting inspired to give the floors in your home a much-needed makeover is easy. Finding someone you can trust to provide the products and services you need can be hard.

Family-Owned Inspired Flooring & Design Takes Projects To A Higher Level

If you’re not sure how to get started, you might want to consider getting inspired. As in Inspired Flooring & Design. The established, family-owned and operated business has been a formidable alternative to the myriad chains and big box retailers since 2014.

The business was founded by the wife-husband team of Pam and Jim Johnson but their experience in flooring and home remodeling dates back to the 1980s. Last year, the Johnsons handed off the business to their daughters, Krista Phillips and Kari Leonard, who have been active in the business on a fulltime basis for years.

“My parents owned a flooring store years ago when we lived in Elkhart, Indiana,” says Phillips. “My siblings and I grew up building forts with carpet samples in the living room. I swore I would never work in flooring when I grew up—and now look at me!”

Eventually the family moved to Spring Hill where Inspired Flooring & Design was founded, largely due to Pam Johnson’s entrepreneurial spirit. “At the time, Mom was working as a sales rep for a large chain flooring company, but she wanted to do something where she would be free of corporate constraints,” says Phillips. “She wanted to do more than just flooring; she wanted to get into people’s homes where she could have an impact on a more personal level.”

In 2018, Inspired moved to its current location at 2105 Wall Street in Spring Hill. Prior to that, it was a home-based business. Make that, a truck-based business with a barn on the family’s property serving as a warehouse. Phillips was working as a corporate payroll manager at the time but pitched in by building the store’s website and handling accounting on the business

side. “We were able to grow largely due to word of mouth,” says Phillips. “We put a high value on building our reputation for excellent customer service. But by 2018, we had grown to the point that we had to open a freestanding store and hire our first sales rep.”

Today, Phillips and Leonard manage the day-to-day operations. Phillips works on the financial, marketing and sales side while Leonard focuses on service and installations. “Kari and I complement each other really well and that’s what makes it work,” Phillips adds. “We’re honest with each other and that’s important, because that can be a struggle for multigenerational businesses. And mom is still in the mix, here-and-there. Even though she’s primarily on the back-end side of the business, she’s a reliable third voice and will always have influence.”

The Inspired team understands that customers and clients have different styles and tastes and are prepared to work with anyone. “Some people like things that are modern and trendy, others might prefer a rustic or farmhouse décor,” says Phillips.

Store/business founders, Pam and Jim Johnson
Co-owner Krista Phillips (L) and her family.

“Our sales team and designers want to get to know you so that they can guide you to the products and styles that are best for your home.”

The point is to cater to the needs of each individual client. “Some people come in and know exactly what they want while others value our opinion,” says Phillips. “We’ll be honest with you about your choices, and we have a lot of different ideas represented in the showroom.”

Phillips says that, because of technology, flooring has come a long way. Products that once were frowned upon are now centerpieces in the finest homes. “Laminate floors of today are not the laminates of 20 years ago,” says Phillips. “They are more resistant to water and scratches than hardwood is. The appearance is very close to real wood and they are particularly good choices for families with kids and pets.”

She also says that wide planks continue to be popular for hardwoods but, she cautions, “In our climate, you don’t want a solid plank that’s wider than five inches or they’ll have difficulty withstanding the expansion and contraction they’ll naturally experience. For wider planks or for homes built on a slab, we recommend an engineered hardwood. Another factor to consider is that many of the homes in the area were built 20-25 years ago. If they are not custom-built and the floors are still original, they’re likely due for replacement."

In addition to flooring, Inspired Flooring & Design represents numerous cabinet lines and can help you with kitchen and bath remodels. When inspiration strikes, the team is equipped to design and manage your projects from start-to-finish. The unwavering commitment to quality is intentional, as is the store’s name. Inspired Flooring & Design is a faith-based business that is guided by Christian values.

“Mom’s goal was to have a business that was inspired by God, where everything would be through the lens of high integrity,” says Phillips. “It’s a place where the people who work there care about you as a person. We really want God to use our business in whatever way he deems fit.”

Say ‘Cheers’ With Cake

ON ST. PATRICK'S DAY

Cocktails and cake each rank high on my list of favorite things. When they get together, happy hour just got a whole lot happier. Not only is the idea of a cocktail cake just plain fun from the get-go, spirits and/or beer offer an unexpected complexity of flavors to a cake. Bonus: They create moistness and tenderness.

For St. Patrick’s Day, here's a boozy chocolate Bundt cake that’s perfect for the occasion. Its inspiration is the Irish Slammer, an iconic fizzy shot. The cocktail combines Guinness Stout, Irish whiskey, and Irish cream liqueur. The cake begins with a stout spiked batter. The dark bold beer imparts a rich, roasty flavor and brings out the deep flavor of the chocolate. Drizzled over the top is a smooth Irish Whiskey Glaze that is so heavenly you’ll be tempted to drink it. Finally, puffs of Irish Cream Frosting top things off. Make sure to get every layer on your fork so you don’t miss the cake’s magical mix of flavors. You’ll find that eating your cocktail is even better than drinking it. TRISHA YEARWOOD & FRIENDS BRING STAR POWER TO RYMAN FUNDRAISER FOR BREAST CANCER

Songs, Soul,

Success

Bursting onto the country music scene in 1991 with her breakout hit, “She’s in Love with the Boy,” from her self-titled debut album, Trisha Yearwood quickly established herself as one of the genre’s most influential female artists. She went on to have a long-standing career as a singer, spanning over three decades, that includes multiple Grammy, CMA, and ACM awards. But beyond her success as a singer, Yearwood has also made her mark as a best-selling author, television personality, and philanthropist. Her cooking show,  Trisha’s Southern Kitchen , showcases her passion for Southern cuisine and hospitality.

On March 26, Yearwood lends her talent and powerhouse vocals to Band As One Nashville: A Concert For the Cure With Trisha Yearwood & Friends. Her friends read like a list of who's who in music, including superstars Lauren Alaina, Kristin Chenoweth, Terri Clark, Anita Cochran, Sheryl Crow, Amy Grant, Keith Urban, and Lainey Wilson. But there's so much more for fans to look forward to from this country legend with the release of new music, marking the first time in her career that she has written all of the songs herself, and an upcoming spring tour.

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH  BAND AS ONE NASHVILLE: A CONCERT FOR THE CURE .

I was asked to host this event, and everyone knows how important breast cancer research is to me, having lost friends and family members to this insidious disease. I’m honored to help shine a light on such an important cause.

HOW DID YOU PUT TOGETHER YOUR LINEUP OF FRIENDS?

Nashville is full of folks who just want to help, and I just started calling my friends! Everyone’s been touched by breast cancer. It was an easy “yes."

WHAT CAN FANS EXPECT FROM THE EVENING?

I see it as a celebration. Music uplifts and heals. It gives us a chance to highlight the importance of yearly screenings and checkups, and to bring awareness to the work being done to treat breast cancer. And to hear some great music, while raising money that stays in our community.

YOU'VE HAD A BUSY 2024 WITH THE OPENING OF FRIENDS IN LOW PLACES, RECEIVING THE ACM HONORS ICON AWARD, HOSTING CMA COUNTRY CHRISTMAS, ETC. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE MOMENT FROM ALL OF THE EXCITING THINGS THAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR?

I’ve always been a person who just tries to take the opportunities that present themselves, so I feel very lucky to be a part of so many great events. I LOVED hearing Emmylou Harris and Lauren Alaina sing "The Song Remembers When" in my honor. I think my favorite moment last year was getting to spend a few days with my pal Amy Grant. I love her SO much, and I love Christmas! I hope we get to work together again this year.

WHAT'S ON THE HORIZON FOR 2025?

2025 is such an exciting year for me, mostly because of new music. Debuting my new songwriter record at the Bluebird was such a personal, fulfilling moment. And being able to tour this spring for the first time in a few years is really exciting for me!

RUMOR HAS IT, THERE WILL BE SOME NEW EPISODES OF TRISHA'S SOUTHERN KITCHEN THIS YEAR, POSSIBLY FILMED AT FRIENDS IN LOW PLACES. IS THERE ANY TRUTH TO THE RUMOR?

Well, I’ll just say something is always cooking in Trisha’s Kitchen! It’s a beautiful space, designed to film in. Currently, we host a lot of special events in the space.

Trisha’s Kitchen at Friends In Low Places/Photo by Russ Harrington

TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR LOVE OF RESCUE ANIMALS AND WHY YOU STARTED DOTTIE'S YARD.

I’ve always been the “Can I keep it?” girl, haha. I grew up in the country, and almost every dog we had was one that wandered up into our yard. I just have a tender heart for strays, and realizing that most rescues across the country rely on volunteers and donations to keep doing God’s work. Dottie was a rescue dog we had in Oklahoma who always did the “vetting” process on new recruits. I started Dottie’s Yard to help supplement the amazing rescue work happening in the country and to help areas hit by hardship like floods, hurricanes, and fires. It’s such an honor to be able to give back a little bit.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU NEED A BREAK TO "GET AWAY FROM IT ALL" AND RELAX?

My meditation time is hiking. I’m lucky to live on a farm with a lot of incredible trails to explore. I have 3 rescue dogs, so I usually take them and hike with my sister. It’s a chance to be in nature, recharge, and enjoy time you don’t get back. My other favorite pastime is reading. I’m a book nerd! Everything from true crime, to a great mystery to books about improving my life, I’m in!

THIS HOME EXUDES Southern Elegance

Oak Hill’s 11,000-square-foot Manor Is On The Market

ARTICLE BY KELLIE WALTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HOME PIX MEDIA

With Radnor Lake, the Governor’s Mansion, premier private schools, and easy access to Green Hills, downtown, and I-65, Oak Hill is one of the most desirable places to live south of Nashville. Not only is it beautiful and accessible, but it’s also one of the safest neighborhoods around town. If you or someone you know is eager to call this area home, we have the inside scoop on one of Oak Hill’s most special properties.

A whopping nine bedrooms, 10 full bathrooms, two half-bathrooms, and a plethora of specialty spaces combine to make this dreamy property weigh in at just over 11,550 square feet, each one thoughtfully designed as a testament to both Southern charm and modern living.

"The homeowners had looked at a lot of houses, but they chose this one because it felt like a Southern manor home," REALTOR Mona Wilson says, noting the family originally relocated from California in 2016. "If they were going to move to Tennessee, that’s the type of place they wanted to call home."

The couple affectionately refers to their home as "the Manor," a fitting name for a residence that has provided them with years of joy and served as a haven for their own slice of Southern hospitality.

Originally built in 1961 as a ranch-style home, the property has undergone a stunning redesign to fit today's lifestyle, resulting in a luxurious open-concept space that is unexpected for a home of its era. It was originally no more than 4,000 square feet, but owners over the years took care to expand it up instead of out. But as you step inside, the welcoming foyer stays true to its ranch-style roots, offering a bit of the home’s history before revealing its grand transformation.

"When you walk in, it has a sweet, intimate feel,” Wilson says. “It doesn’t feel like you’re walking into an 11,000-square-foot home."

As you make your way through, the sprawling features come to the forefront. A standout is the impressive chef's kitchen, equipped with premium appliances from renowned brands like Sub-Zero, Dacor, and Bosch. This kitchen, along with the spacious casual dining area, is perfect for entertaining, allowing family and friends to gather and create lasting memories. In fact, the homeowner is a passionate cook and has thoroughly enjoyed her time creating in the kitchen.

The wall of French doors opens into the outdoor living space, creating a seamless flow between the indoors and outdoors, ideal for those warm Tennessee evenings.

The outdoor space has recently undergone a stunning renovation with upgrades including new fencing surrounding the property, strategic landscaping in the front and back lawns for added privacy, a new, full lawn irrigation system, and gorgeous exterior lighting.

But with the new additions also comes plenty of history preserved. In the spirit of Southern tradition, five massive, long-tenured magnolias stand watch over the property. And in the spring, the maturity of the beautiful white wisteria overlooking the pool cannot be missed.

Beyond the arbor, a charming walkway leads to a separate guesthouse, where the homeowners once housed part of their own family—including a brand new grandbaby.

“They were able to spend time with their grandson at an early age, which they loved,” Wilson adds. “The home also has a spacious nanny or in-law suite on the third floor, which is accessible by an elevator that was recently installed.”

“That is what makes this home so interesting. There are so many different uses of the space.”

With a separate guesthouse and an in-law suite in the primary home, the Manor is perfectly poised for large or multi-generational families and, of course, entertaining. For those who entertain frequently, the home is equipped with multiple en suite bedrooms, offering guests both privacy and comfort. With 10-foot ceilings and solid eight-foot doors throughout, each bedroom features a walk-in closet, ensuring guests feel right at home. The wide and impressive staircase leading you to the second floor allows you to notice the beautiful woodwork, high ceilings, and large windows, offering an abundance of natural light.

"I can’t tell you the number of people that have shared with me that once you get to the second floor, it feels like a European hotel with its large gathering space, equipped with a gas fireplace and hallways leading to the many en suites," Wilson says.

While entertaining options are aplenty, careful touches have been added for the home’s new owners as well. The primary en suite on the main floor has two sets of French doors leading to the outdoor living area, a gas fireplace to keep you warm on chilly nights, and artfully designed closets customized by California Closets. In the primary bathroom, expect a standalone tub, a steam shower, and beautiful tile work.

Wilson also emphasized the home's potential, especially the kitchen's impressive pantry space: it currently has a dedicated china closet where the downstairs washer and dryer could be easily relocated.

"We think that the current pantry right behind the kitchen could be turned into an amazing scullery," she suggests. “That is what makes this home so interesting. There are so many different uses of the space. You can move right in, or you can renovate and make it your own.”

Despite the home being built in the early 1960s, its upkeep and modernization are remarkable. Smart home technology and a top-notch security system are routed throughout the home. In addition, the homeowners have recently replaced multiple HVAC units, water heaters, and more.

"As we all know, over 11,000 square feet is a lot of house to maintain, but the current owners take such pride of ownership and stay on top of things," Wilson says.

From the beautiful grounds through the front door and beyond, this stunning home invites you to experience the best of Southern living, where history and tradition meet modern luxury. And the best part? It can be yours.

Local Craftsman Brings New Life To Old Barns

When Jake Herring sees an old barn, he sees something much greater–an opportunity to repurpose the wood to better serve a family or business while reducing waste.

Herring, an avid rock climber who loves to travel, attended Michigan State, where he received a degree in construction management. This led him to work in the commercial sector in Las Vegas. But it was not a good fit for a hands-on person like Herring.“It just wasn’t for me,” he says. “It was a lot of sitting on the computer all day.” In addition, Herring became disheartened by the immense amount of waste being produced on job sites each day. “Outside of my work trailer were all of the dumpsters lined up with trucks coming and going, nonstop, hauling them off.”

Inspired to rethink how materials are used, Herring and his brother, Luke, started naturalDESIGN, a business constructing smaller additions to homes and remodels. However, as the housing market declined in 2008, they saw a need to shift gears. That’s when they started taking down barns and reclaiming the wood for other projects. “I feel like it’s important. I think it just makes sense—preserving our resources,” says Herring.

Over the years, Herring has used reclaimed wood to build furniture, feature walls for restaurants, and remodels. You may have unknowingly sat at a table or eaten in a restaurant he helped construct, including Two Ten Jack, Red Pony, and 55 South. Recently, he built additional shelving for Gray’s on Main and renovated the space that now houses the David Arms Gallery in Leiper’s Fork.

Having bought out his brother, Herring and his team of three at naturalDESIGN now focus primarily on new construction and extensive remodels. Continuing to reclaim resources, Herring says, “The lumber we use is a lot higher grade and denser wood than the new growth lumber. It’s nice to see it live on instead of getting pushed into a trash pile.”

There is evidence of Herring’s passion and handiwork throughout his Thompson’s Station home. Much of the house is made from reclaimed materials or resources harvested locally. The hardwood flooring is all made from scraps of barn wood, and the timber framing

is from oak harvested in Leiper’s Fork. However, a unique part of the home’s design is not the materials themselves but the harnessing of passive solar for sustainability and lessening the environmental impact.

“Passive solar drastically reduces energy consumption,” explains Herring. Intentionally positioning a house to face south and creating an exterior overhang above a wall of windows allows the sunlight to come well into the home in the winter but limits how much enters in the summer. Herring notes this design works best on acreage where the site can be adjusted, whereas subdivisions make this a challenge due to regulations and positioning of lots.

For Herring, designing a home or space is more than just about his love for building or his passion for designing with sustainability in mind. “I love to think about the occupants and the movement throughout the space,” he says. Herring is passionate about creating spaces for the occupants or end users that focus on what he calls “Function over form–putting the heart back into things. We are blurring the lines between contractors and craftsmen.”
