Our lead designer carefully selects all our fixtures and finishes. She’ll help you choose yours, too, with as much or as little hand-holding as you like. But we do recommend you take advantage of her design services while you can. September marks the end of summer and saying goodbye to summer can often be bittersweet. But we are here to soften the bitter with the sweet and bring you our annual September style issue! Distinguished designer Rachel Zoe, who rose to prominence as a celebrity wardrobe stylist, said, "Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak." So whether it's fashion, beauty, or home, there are quite a few creative types filling the 44 pages of this issue.
Starting with Kathy Miller of Wild Root Florist & Gift Shop who offers us a little insight into her store's most-talked about signs. We chat with a local watch designer and a realtor to discover their creative styles. We even show you how to get creative with a DIY lavender scrub.
And let's not forget our cover stars, brothers Chris and Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes. They broke on to the rock scene in 1990 and are performing at this month's Pilgrimage Music & Cultural Festival with a slew of other talented musicians. Style is one of the most salient qualities of music!
So when Taylor Swift sang, "We never go out of style," she wasn't kidding. Style permeates everything we see and do. However you do something, create something, perform something or even say something, may you do it with your own distinctive style.
Until next month, friends!
Warmly,
September 2023

City Lifestyle talked with Jessica Wilkerson, lead designer and operations manager for one of the oldest family-owned businesses in Tennessee, OP Jenkins Furniture & Design. Their team has been helping clients create lovely interiors since 1907. Its flagship store is located in Knoxville and a Franklin boutique opened near Whole Foods at 1556 West McEwen in 2016.
Jessica, a Tennessee native who is married and has two young boys and two golden retrievers, travels back and forth, helping the teams in both stores find furnishings and accessories their customers will love. “We were excited to bring our no-nonsense design approach and our large library of vendors to Middle Tennessee,” she says. “We adore Franklin and the people in it!”
Jessica offers the following ideas about making homes reflections of individual personalities, as well as functional for families and guests.
PEOPLE OFTEN NEED TO CHANGE UP THEIR I NTERIORS AS THEY GO THROUGH VARIOUS STAGES OF LIFE. HOW CAN OP JENKINS HELP NEW HOMEOWNERS JUST STARTING OUT WHO DON’T HAVE A BIG BUDGET?
“We work on all types of projects with all types of budgets. We do focus on quality, long-term pieces and are happy to create an ‘order of importance’ to ensure they’re investing their budget in the right pieces.”
HOW ABOUT HOMEOWNERS WHO HAVE LIVED IN THEIR HOUSES FOR YEARS AND WANT TO UPDATE THEIR DÉCOR?
“This is one of my favorite things to do. When updating a home, I believe lighting is one of the biggest changes you can make to accomplish that. Our designers put together new lighting plans and then we follow with furnishings and décor.”
WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR CLIENTS MOVING INTO NEW CONSTRUCTION?
“We can start planning your interiors as soon as you have a floor plan! We often come in and select all initial lighting, find the perfect spots to pop fun wallpaper, and create a beautifully furnished space from the ground up.”
AND EMPTY
“Home transitions are a huge need that we work with often. The key is determining what we can bring to the new home and focusing on what is usually a change of scale from the family home to the empty nest. Our Franklin design manager, Patricia Robbins, just did this for a wonderful couple who moved from their Franklin house to a downtown condo. We were able to incorporate several pieces from their home and give them an entirely new look by adding elements that changed up the style and feel.”
“We work with clients on all sizes of projects. We can furnish an entire home or one room. What makes us special is our ability to be a one-stop-shop for everyone. We can help as much or as little as you need and our team loves working on all different sizes and styles of jobs.”

Along with the first days of fall comes Franklin’s annual Pilgrimage Music and Cultural Festival – an eclectic lineup of live music, food, arts, crafts and more all set against a backdrop of the beautiful 230 acres of Harlinsdale Farm. While festival-goers can enjoy live music both day and night, they can also enjoy features like the Americana Music Triangle Experience – an immersive celebration of historic, musical cities of the South along the Gold Record Road; Makers Village –the festival’s own marketplace of local, handcrafted goods; Farm to Turntable – a shady little spot on the farm where you can sit down, recharge, and enjoy some eats from your favorite food trucks; and Lil’ Pilgrims Family Stage – an area for kids to enjoy music and activities all their own. Admission is free for children under the age of seven accompanied by a ticket-holding adult. This year’s headliners include chart-toppers like The Lumineers, The Black Crowes, Zach Bryan, Ashley McBryde, Margo Price, Luke Grimes, Yola, and many others as part of a star-studded lineup. With two days and nights of music, activities, and fun for the whole family, Pilgrimage Festival is certainly worth the journey, great or small. PilgrimageFestival.com
The two-time Grammy-nominated Lumineers are touring in support of their fourth album, 2022’s Brightside. The album was top 10 in both the U.S. and Canada and the title track reached number one on Billboard’s Alternative National Airplay and Adult Alternative Airplay charts—the sixth time the band has topped the latter chart in less than 10 years. Last year’s tour saw more than 750,000 tickets sold across five continents, including two sold out stadium shows. TheLumineers.com
In 1990, when journalists were lamenting the death of rock, The Black Crowes gave the genre a swift and much needed shake up with the album, Shake Your Money Maker. Fueled by singles “Jealous Again,” “Twice As Hard,” “She Talks To Angels,” and the break-through cover of Otis Redding’s “Hard To Handle,” the band immediately took the rock world by storm. The Black Crowes went on to release eight studio and four live albums, selling in the tens of millions along the way. TheBlackCrowes.com
Stand For Myself is the anthemic new album from Yola, a sophisticated and diverse sonic mix of symphonic soul and classic. Yola’s inimitable vocals share nuanced stories of allyship, black feminine strength through vulnerability, collective awakening and loving connection from the sexual to the social. Yola declares that it is only when we stand for ourselves, and acknowledge our complexity, that we can be truly alive. IAmYola.com
Zach Bryan is a singer/songwriter from Oologah, Oklahoma, proud of his small-town roots and whose music is fueled by a desire to stay true to himself. The 25-year-old served seven years in the Navy before being honorably discharged. His success is found in his raspy voice, a mix of classic folk melody and outlaw country with a raw edge. Zach’s ability to create depth in his work is rivaled by few artists. He believes that who you are only extends to the person you are today, an ideology reflected in everything he creates. Margo Price has something to say but nothing to prove. In just three remarkable solo albums, the singer/songwriter has cemented herself as a force in American music and a generational talent. A deserving critical darling, she has never shied away from the sounds that move her, the pain that’s shaped her, or the topics that tick her off, like music industry double standards, the gender wage gap, or the plight of the American farmer. In 2021, she even joined the board of Farm Aid. MargoPrice.net
GRAMMY, CMA and ACM award winner Ashley McBryde cut her teeth playing country songs in biker bars – and it shows. With 11 songs all co-written by the Arkansas native, The Devil I Know is set for release on September 8, featuring chart-climbing lead single “Light On In The Kitchen,” along with the recently released title track, “Learned To Lie” and album opener “Made For This.” McBryde is currently on the road with headlining shows and festival stops throughout the summer along with dates on Jelly Roll’s Back Road Baptism Tour 2023 before returning to Middle Tennessee for Pilgrimage Festival. Known for his role as Kayce Dutton in Taylor Sheridan’s juggernaut, Yellowstone, Grimes recently launched his music career with the release of his single “No Horse To Ride” and its sync in Yellowstone’s mid-season finale. Grime’s soulful and brooding voice as well as his acute sense of songwriting has made him a recent favorite in Nashville amongst the creative community. Grimes debut album will be produced by Dave Cobb. His dedication to carving out a unique lane has excited enough folks to also earn him a recording deal with UMG Nashville. LukeGrimesMusic.com
As a Realtor, Dawne Harris would never lead anyone into a transaction that could leave them underwater. But when she’s not helping clients buy and sell their homes, underwater is exactly where she wants to be.
“I’ve been a certified scuba diver since 1992 and was an instructor for a time,” she says. “It’s a passion
for me. I still dive and do exotic travel four to six times per year.”
Harris takes several diving trips annually along with her husband, Rob. As the owner of Island Hoppers Scuba in Berry Hill, he sells gear, teaches certification, and leads dive trips to locations around the world. While Indonesia is perhaps her favorite spot, so far this year she has visited Turks and Caicos and made a pair of trips to Bonaire off the coast of Venezuela. Upcoming adventures include a trip to the Red Sea in October followed by the British Virgin Islands in November. “When I’m diving, I really like to look for small, interesting creatures and bright, colorful nudibranchs which can be found at depths of 20 to 50 feet,” she says. Her deepest dive has been 120 feet.
“I always wanted to scuba dive or snow ski. No one would go diving with me, so I just did it and became so enamored that I never hit the slopes.”
Harris got into diving to fulfill her sense of adventure. “I always wanted to scuba dive or snow ski,” she says. “No one would go diving with me, so I just did it and became so enamored that I never hit the slopes. Besides, I enjoy being underwater and I don’t like the cold.”
Harris says that the dynamics in scuba and real estate are actually very similar. “You have to be relaxed and in-the-moment,” she says. “You can’t let yourself become stressed. I carry that over into my business because you have to be focused and not let small things that don’t go as planned stress you out. It’s about keeping that even keel throughout a transaction, no matter what else is happening.”
Harris attended O’More College of Design for a year in the 1980s before transferring to MTSU where she earned a degree in history. From there she went to work in the family business, installing wallpaper, mostly in residential properties in Brentwood, Green Hills and Belle Meade. Eventually, she made the transition to real estate and has been a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Woodmont Realty for 10 years.
“I thought real estate would dovetail nicely with my prior experience,” she says. “The 9-to-5 routine is not for me. I like being in different spots every day and being on the road, seeing different properties.” She says that the market is stabilizing which is good for everyone. “Homes aren’t sitting for months but they’re not getting 20-30 offers as soon as they’re listed either. Competition is a little stiffer for homes in the $400,000 range.”
Which makes it easier for everyone to stay above water. Unless they have other ideas. BHHS.com/woodmont-realty-tn301/

From beautiful bouquets to silly signs, Wild Root Florist and Gift Shop is known for spreading joy and smiles to the Spring Hill community. This positive energy couldn’t have grown from anyone other than the vibrant owner, Kathy Miller. “In college, I would work on weekends or during holidays at a local flower shop and I thought to myself ‘This is home’, which made me realize that I needed to be a florist full-time. I am very fortunate to have worked with some very talented people along the way which was immensely helpful,” Miller shares. “Eventually, I went full-time and began doing what I loved. I made my own name and have owned the business since April of 2016.”
After starting the business, Miller’s love for the shop and the flowers cultivated experiences that inspired her work. “I’ve had some amazing opportunities while owning the shop. I buy my flowers straight from Virgin Farms in Ecuador and over time I got to know the owner of the farm. He invited me to travel to the Andes mountains, which is the most temperate place on earth for roses. We went to nine different rose farms and toured. There were roses as far as I could see and it was absolutely beautiful,” Miller reflects. “Going into the experience, I thought about Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day and when the United States uses the most flowers. But I was humbled by remembering that we are just one country. These farms are thinking about Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day and all of the other holidays for each of the different countries they ship to. The whole trip was a bucket list experience but I learned so much as well. It takes 72 hours from the time the flower is cut to the time it is on my doorstep and that is unheard of. To see the process that brings us our fresh flowers blew my mind.”
ARTICLE BY LAUREN KELLY PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATHY MILLERMiller’s experience and knowledge in flowers are not the only thing that Wild Root is known for, however. “When I bought the shop, I decided that I wanted the sign outside in the front to say something funny, light, and humorous. We put the signs up every Monday morning and people began to say to me ‘Oh! You run the shop with the funny signs!.’ One Monday morning, our delivery guy who normally changes out the sign, got busy with deliveries and left it blank for a while. Someone at the gas station took a picture of the empty sign and said ‘unacceptable.’ This joke got spread around and people began questioning why the sign wasn’t up until eventually someone stopped me at the doctor’s office and asked if I had checked the ‘I Heart Spring Hill’ Facebook page. Once I looked at it, I couldn’t believe the community’s reaction.”
“After a thousand people had commented on the page, I posted 10 signs and had everyone vote so that we could make
Gifts for any occasion
“I GET MY IDEAS FOR THE SIGNS FROM EVERYWHERE. SOME FROM FRIENDS, SOME I MAKE UP, SOME I FIND ONLINE. BUT IF IT MAKES ME LAUGH OUT LOUD, THEN I KNOW IT’S GOING ON THE SIGN.”
the top three into t-shirts. That was when things really began to expand. About 29,000 people viewed the post and 14,900 people voted. I was astonished! I thought to myself ‘I’m not sure what going ‘viral’ entails, but I think we did! I think we’ve gone viral!.’ Now we have t-shirts and it’s been such an entertaining ride ever since.”
The joy of both Miller and Wild Root is shown throughout the entirety of the shop. “I get my ideas for the signs from everywhere. Some from friends, some I make up, some I find online. But if it makes me laugh out loud, then I know it’s going on the sign,” Miller says. “The signs have been confirmation to me that people need some levity from the heavy things around them. The goal of the shop is to bring a smile to people’s faces and that’s what the signs and the flowers have done. I’m proud that I’ve been able to do all of this. I didn’t know if I could. But to have formed the relationships in the community that I have has been such a blessing.”
WildRootFlorist.com
Kathy Miller designed for florists in the shop’s location for years, but was able to take ownership of Wild Root in 2016. With over forty years of experience and expertise in the floral industry, combined with over twenty years in the Spring Hill community, Wild Root Florist and Gift Shop has turned into a local gem.
For Thompson’s Station resident and Church of the City Franklin Prayer Pastor Ashley Dasher, what began as a childhood fascination with watches, developed into a lifelong passion, and eventually became a business. This love of watches, combined with the desire to work with his wife Tabitha to build something as a family, led to creating Dasher Watch Co., which launches its first product this month.
“It probably goes back to when I was a kid. I’ve always liked watches,” he says. “I used to wear a Timex and my uncle always had on some sort of cool watch, like a dive watch. He lived in a different state than I did, and he would send me postcards. There’s a picture of him in one of them diving on a coral reef, so in my mind he always kind of had this sort of adventure aspect about what he got to do with his career and travel to other countries.“
As he got older, Dasher’s sense of childhood wonder and imagination always continued to connect his uncle’s adventurous life to the watches he wore. “That grew up with me over time and then I started noticing, whether it’s someone like Jacques Cousteau or the Apollo astronauts, who really started with some of the mechanical chronographs back in the ‘60s,” he explains. In his mind he always connected that “there was a tie to watches and people doing cool things.”
Prior to serving as a pastor, Dasher played guitar in a touring Christian band called Unhindered. During that time, he first explored his entrepreneurial spirit, creating and selling a pedalboard for guitar players called Dashboards, which he says was even used by two of the guitar players on Garth Brook’s tour. In 2022, he and his wife Tabitha rekindled the idea of reembarking on that entrepreneurial path in a new way.
“We were ready to get back in this product space and so we started dreaming. And because I always loved watches, we really started thinking, ‘What would it be like if we had a blank canvas and we designed our own watch? What would be the elements that we would want to have in it? What would the lines of the watch look like? What would the colors look like?’,” he remembers. “We’ve had the privilege of doing a few different things, but they all seem to connect to the next season in some way, whether it’s something we’ve learned or knowledge we’ve put in our back pocket. It’s kind of been cool to sort of see how each season served the next.”
ARTICLE BY LISA VALENTINEWhen it came time to design the watch, creating just the right style was of utmost importance to Dasher. “We are creating modern watches with vintage roots,” he explains. “A watch that is made for the journey. Wherever life takes you. So when you first look at the watch, we hope you might wonder,
‘Is this a vintage watch or is this a new watch?’ and so I’m really glad that was captured in our first watch.
“It’s a 39 mm chronograph, which means you can time things with it. It’s got two registers on it. The cool thing about our watch too is it’s all mechanical,” he explains, meaning it’s not automatic, but rather it must be wound up typically every day and a half.
“I’ve been inspired by the role that watches have played over time,” says Dasher. “There is something romantic here in the 2020s about a mechanical watch that you need to wind each morning. Winding the watch and hearing the tick of the gears is a grounding experience first thing in the morning. It helps set the tone for the day. There is something special about using an analog tool in a digital world. Digital devices have become increasingly disposable, and we hope our watches will be something passed down. We even left the case back sterile so that it can be engraved, and we are working with a local Franklin jeweler to set up those services.”
The watch is named the Lindon Chronograph after his and Tabitha’s daughter, who is the youngest of their four children. “For me, whether it’s Sean Connery as James Bond, or Walt Cunningham and the Apollo astronauts, or divers who have explored the ocean’s deepest points, there are these cool watches that back in the day were fairly standard issue and we wanted to pay tribute to those watches, but in our own way,” he explains.
Dasher Watch Co.’s tagline, “Wind it up and live your life” echoes the sense of adventure that inspired the company, but the sentiment of time also goes deeper than that. “We all only have so much time and life is full of ups and downs and twists and turns. But to truly be mindful of how we spend it. I think that’s an interesting point of a watch that you wind every day. It’s just this kind of almost meditative reminder first thing in the morning that you only have so many moments in that day and let’s not waste it. Let’s make it count and really just be mindful. I hope that from our family to everyone that purchases a watch that they will just be mindful of how precious time really is and time together and time with the people that you really care about.” says Dasher.
Two hundred watches are available for this first edition watch and they are currently available on the company’s website with plans to expand to in-person sales within local stores in the Franklin area.

The Hills is well positioned to take advantage of all that Williamson County has to offer. 4.4 miles away, the mixed-use development June Lake features 3.9m square feet of commercial office space and 1.3m square feet of retail and restaurant space. Even closer is Roderick Place, comprising almost 80 acres of live, shop, work and retirement options, and slightly further afield at 9 miles lies The Berry Farms, a characterful, curated mixed-use community with commercial, residential and retail offerings. The cities of Franklin and Nashville are just 10 and 32 miles away, adding an extra layer of convenience for commuters.
Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?
Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves.
We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be. “We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says.
“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.
If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life.
