Letter from the Editor

Do you remember when you were a kid and simply saying you were “going to explore” was enough?

Your mom might stop you on the way to the backyard and ask what you were doing. “Going to explore,” you’d say—and that was perfectly acceptable. In fact, it was expected.

As adults, what’s considered acceptable and expected has changed—and rightly so. But when it comes to exploration, that’s another story.

In our high-tech, productivity-driven, temperaturecontrolled world, it’s easy to believe that if something can’t be measured, it isn’t valuable. If an activity doesn’t contribute to one of our strategic goals for the year, maybe it’s time wasted.

But the truth is, when we build lives that are overly planned and predictable— with little room for that childlike wonder about what might unfold next, that desire to explore and enjoy God’s world—we risk missing some extraordinary moments.

This summer, let’s go back—back to the backyard or, now that we’ve grown up, far beyond it. Whether that means discovering hidden gems around The Woodlands or hopping on a plane to a mysterious new city across the world, we invite you to greet this month with the joy of adventure.

Start right here, with our July edition, aptly named the Explore issue.

In the pages ahead, discover a full day’s adventure in The Woodlands (for those staying closer to home this summer), a behind-the-bumper-sticker look at why you should really “Go See Ken,” travel inspiration from the Hill Country to London, and a feature on a local veterans park—just in time for July 4th. You’ll also meet a local adventurer and running enthusiast, Erica Cummings, D.D.S.

Our cover story takes you to the stunning Beachtown, Galveston—inviting you to build a legacy where sand meets sea. And what better time to do so?

Whatever your summer plans, we hope you enjoy exploring near and far with the people you love. But remember: try not to plan too much.

“Let us go on and take the adventures that shall fall to us.”

WHERE SERVICE Lives On

How the Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Park Stands for Enduring Sacrifice

ARTICLE BY DAWN ALLEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAWN ALLEN & PROVIDED
The Women of War Monument, honoring women who have served our country.
Learn about Montgomery County’s fire and rescue history.

After serving in Vietnam and losing both legs in combat, Jimmie C. Edwards III delayed his return to Conroe until he could walk unaided on prosthetic legs. When he finally stepped off the plane, more than 200 people greeted him with cheers and open arms. That moment marked not just the end of his military service but the beginning of a new mission.

Edwards made a promise: to give back to both his country and his hometown. And he kept it. He went on to serve four terms as one of the youngest-ever representatives in the Texas Legislature and later served as Montgomery County Judge.

A PERMANENT TRIBUTE

During his time as county judge, Edwards oversaw the restoration of Montgomery County’s historic downtown veterans park. But his vision extended far beyond its original grounds. In 2016, he founded the Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Commission, a nonprofit led by veterans and first responders, and committed himself to creating a permanent tribute to service and sacrifice. Alongside the commission, he secured land along I-45 and united a dedicated team of volunteers to bring the new veterans park to life.

Commission Executive Director Elizabeth Woods shared that the commission honors all who have served in the U.S. military, regardless of rank or hometown. The Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Park continues to grow, telling more stories and recognizing more lives with each passing year.

One of the park’s most powerful features is “The Line,” a striking tribute where veterans’ names are engraved without rank or distinction. Three-star generals appear alongside privates—an intentional reminder that every sacrifice carries equal weight.

“They were all willing to serve. That’s what The Line is all about,” says Commission Chairman Jimmie C. Edwards III.

HONORING VETERANS, STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY

The park currently features 12 memorial galleries designed to educate and inspire. Visitors of all ages can walk through these spaces to learn about the achievements and sacrifices of U.S. military personnel, past and present.

On May 10, 2025, the community celebrated the dedication of First Responders Plaza and the rededication of the Firefighters Monument, which was relocated from the Lone Star Convention Center.

More is still to come. This coming Veterans Day, the park will achieve a major milestone with the dedication of Honored Mission Hall, an 11,000-square-foot education and visitors center and museum.

The facility will include dedicated historical exhibits, two event spaces for rotating exhibits, a lecture hall, a theater room, and the commission’s office space.

Additionally, construction is underway on the Gold Star Family Monument, a quiet outdoor space for reflection and remembrance honoring the immediate relatives of U.S. military members who died in the line of duty.

The park will also soon unveil one of its most striking additions: the 31-foot Women of War Monument, honoring the vital contributions of women who served— often behind the lines.

THE LEGACY OF FREEDOM

As the Fourth of July approaches and we prepare to celebrate our nation’s founding, let us also honor the sacrifices of those who gave their lives to protect its freedom. The Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Park serves as a reminder that freedom comes at a cost and that the men and women who paid that cost must never be forgotten. Their legacy lives on here, through every engraved name, every story told, and every life touched by a visit.

THE COMMISSION’S MISSION:

The Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Commission is a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring the experiences and sacrifices of United States veterans, active-duty military, and first responders across this great nation through education, awareness, and outreach.

A BRUSH WITH SUMMER

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

INSPIRING ART CLASSES IN THE WOODLANDS

It may be too late to plan your Grand Tour this summer—the kind that wanders through the whispering corridors of the Uffizi, lingers under the gaze of Botticelli or pauses before a sun-drenched canvas at the Musée d’Orsay. But beauty isn’t bound by passport stamps or Eurail timetables. If the galleries of Europe must wait, let the muse meet you here at home, where light filters through pine canopies and summer hums softly in The Woodlands.

Instead of roaming foreign streets in search of artistic revelation, why not cultivate your own? Art, after all, is not a destination—it is a discipline, a rebellion of the spirit against the mundane. In the words of Vincent van Gogh, “I would rather die of passion than of boredom.” There is no better season than summer to surrender to such passion, uncap the tube of paint, smudge charcoal across fresh paper and create something from nothing.

Start by exploring the offerings of the Cordovan Art School, where summer classes cater to a variety of media and experience levels. The curriculum blends foundational technique with personal expression, ensuring your summer masterpiece is as much about self-discovery as it is about skill. Held in a welcoming studio setting, classes are ideal for those seeking a structured path with a splash of inspiration—and a good dose of joy.

Alternatively, consider joining the Woodlands Art League, a treasure whose mission extends far beyond canvas and brush. With regular workshops, exhibitions and social gatherings, the League fosters a true community of artists—those who understand that creativity thrives not in isolation but in kinship.

In the end, art is not about museums or medals. It is, as Picasso once wrote, “washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” To engage

with art is to cleanse, refine and remember that beauty is not a luxury—it is a necessity. If your summer itinerary feels a little too sensible this year—if your feet stay planted, your passport remains unstamped, and your dreams confined to this familiar zip code— know this: you are in excellent company. The artist does not need to chase the world. The world comes to those who are still long enough to observe it.

MAKING MOVES

Running a successful dental practice, running the family calendar, and making time for actual running all require intentional planning. Local dentist and owner of Sterling Ridge Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, Erica Cummings, D.D.S., shares how she balances it all while staying motivated and inspired.

Much like Newton’s First Law of Motion—objects in motion stay in motion—Cummings has lived an active lifestyle from an early age. In her early 30s, she completed four marathons before pausing to launch her dental practice. She met and married Lewis Cummings, D.D.S., became a stepmom to six, and had a son of their own. And she hasn’t stopped running since.

“Running a race would be a lot harder to do without my family’s support,” says Cummings. She’s grateful that Lewis supports her Saturday morning long run days while he executes breakfast and kids’ sports.

“It’s the same at work. If I didn’t have an incredible team behind me, I would not be as successful as I am. You don’t do any of that alone.”

Cummings reveals that in dentistry, it’s easy to become complacent—doing average work and getting along just fine. But for her, it’s

more meaningful to seek to impact people’s lives. The tight-knit team at Sterling Ridge treat their longtime clients like family.

“You sleep better at night knowing about the quality you deliver,” she says.

GIVING BACK LOCALLY

Cummings makes a concerted effort to stay active in the community. She has a strong relationship with the first dentist she worked with, and every year the team invites them back for their free dental days for the community. It’s a family affair: Lewis, a periodontal specialist with his own practice, performs extractions while Erica does fillings.

Other community involvement includes Conroe’s Meals-onWheels annual fun run, Miles for Meals, and The Woodlands Christian Academy’s PTA and Warrior Booster Club. Cummings recently chaired the school’s Color Run.

She relies on technology to best manage her time and keep her family in sync—especially the Skylight calendar. The digital planner sits on the Cummings’ kitchen countertop, with each family member using a phone app to color-code their engagements on the calendar.

In many family ventures, you have each other to help run the business. But Erica and Lewis both had to figure out how to do it themselves in their respective practices. Cummings praises her head assistant, Bridget, for enabling her to run her practice successfully—and enriching her life—over the past 14 years.

GETTING OUT TO PLAY

Family vacation requires careful planning, too. The Cummings family loves to go on adventures together, particularly places where they can be active, like Utah, where they can hike, mountain bike, and ski, and, of course, enjoy good food.

“Being active is good for your body, a good outlet as a stress reliever and a good thing to instill in your kids that become habits,” she says. Their son, Bobby, at eight years old, even runs a daily eight-minute mile before his other sporting activities.

Cummings’ family modeled an active life for her. She recalls going on family trips to Colorado, whitewater rafting in North Carolina, and camping on the Guadalupe River—always being out in nature, on the move, as a kid.

Last year, a friend she runs with on the weekends was training for The Woodlands Marathon and planted the seed for Cummings to join in on the fun. Though she started training late, she jumped into the familiar routine and pressed on. The two finished the marathon together—and Cummings, at 44, realized she had qualified for The Boston Marathon by 22 seconds. She gets emotional just thinking about it.

The timing was perfect. She turned 45 before registering for the 2024 Boston Marathon, which enabled her to gain a five-minute window and qualify by 05:22.

Cummings went to Boston with her family for the race. While there, they checked off all the sightseeing they could around Easter—Mass at Saint Cecilia’s, a Red Sox game, the Freedom Trail, and visits to MIT and Harvard.

When running the famous race, Cummings went through all the emotions that came with such a feat, but mile after mile, she powered through. It’s partly her competitive nature that gets her through, she says. Even just passing the person in front of her helps motivate her. Other times, it’s her internal self-motivating voice that pushes her to keep going, or she turns to prayer for strength and courage. However she reaches the finish line, overcoming the challenge in front of her is part of the fun.

Cummings has been running since she was a kid. Her dad would sign her and her brother up for fun runs, and they’d run the neighborhood streets at night. She continued throughout junior high and high school, making friends with other runners. Back then, it wasn’t about the competition. And that’s still true today. Before the Boston Marathon, Cummings became friends with a fellow participant.

“IF I DIDN’T HAVE AN INCREDIBLE TEAM BEHIND ME, I WOULD NOT BE AS SUCCESSFUL AS I AM. YOU DON’T DO ANY OF THAT ALONE.”

They exchanged numbers and congratulated each other at the end of their races.

“It was the best and the worst race I’ve ever had,” says Cummings. “The hills were the worst ever, but the highs I felt were the best, and the happiest of moments realizing that I am here!”

STAYING CONNECTED

Today, Cummings stays motivated through learning and staying connected with current events. She enjoys audiobooks, podcasts, and watching documentaries on Netflix. Her favorite motivational podcasts include Ultimate Human by Gary Brecka, Huberman Lab, and The Drive by Peter Attia. Her motivational books of choice include Atomic Habits, Drive, and When by Daniel Pink.

More adventures await her and her family. When needed, Cummings reminds herself to just keep going, relying on prayer for strength to finish the race well—both literally and figuratively. But that’s all part of the journey.

Tidewashed and Timeless

A Return to Grace in Beachtown, Galveston

There are places that capture your imagination from the first breath of ocean air, the first crunch of white sand beneath your feet, the first time your children race ahead of you down a boardwalk, laughter spilling toward the tide. Beachtown, Galveston is such a place—a community not built for the weekend but for the generations.

Set on the eastern tip of Galveston Island, kissed by the Gulf and cradled by a nature preserve, Beachtown is a return to grace. A place where architecture respects heritage, families root themselves in rhythm with the sea, and life slows to match the turning of the tides.

A PLACE TO COME HOME TO—FOREVER

Beachtown was never purely designed for tourists or fleeting holidays. It was envisioned as a coastal village where families build not just houses, but legacies. Here, mornings begin with bare feet on a screened porch and the scent of salt on the breeze. Days end with front porch conversations, children sticky from s’mores and sun, and the distant call of seabirds settling in for the night.

These aren’t merely vacation homes. They’re heirlooms. Homes in Beachtown are thoughtfully built in the classic vernacular of Galveston’s architectural history—raised for resilience, wrapped in porches for comfort, painted in warm, welcoming hues. It’s not uncommon to find grandparents rocking in the shade while the grandkids dash off over the dunes with boogie boards in hand. And unlike so

many other communities along the Gulf, Beachtown’s shoreline isn’t shrinking. It’s growing—thanks to its position along an accreting beach where each passing year brings more sand.

This isn’t just preservation. It's a progression—a promise of permanence, wrapped in coastal charm.

THE LAST, BEST BEACH

Beachtown sits on the most pristine section of Galveston’s coast—blessed with unusually white, quartz-rich sand and a shoreline that seems to stretch wider with every season. There are no seawalls here. No artificial barricades. Just nature, gently rising to greet you.

To the east lies the East End Lagoon Nature Preserve—684 acres of tidal wetlands and coastal prairie that serve as both buffer and blessing. The sun rises here over still water and native marshland, casting a golden light across the beachside homes that feel more like Southern estates than seaside bungalows. It’s the kind of place where families name their houses, not because it's trendy, but because the home becomes part of the family itself.

A COMMUNITY BUILT FOR CONNECTION

One of Beachtown’s most remarkable traits is its intentional design. Master-planned by the same team behind Florida’s Seaside and Alys Beach, the community is built around walkability, charm, family, and connection.

Pathways wind through the neighborhood like gentle rivers, leading to porchfront cafes, a community pool, and shady parklets where children ride scooters, dogs nap in the sun, and neighbors stop to chat. The Town Center, anchored by the Porch Cafe and market, feels like something from a time before screen time. You can feel your pulse slow. You remember what it means to linger.

Here, life takes its time.

A place where children learn to surf alongside their grandparents, where Christmas dinners are served barefoot, and where July 4th parades see entire blocks decorated in bunting and bells.

A LIVING LEGACY

Families who build in Beachtown aren’t just buying property. They’re becoming stewards of a larger story. Many are second-, even third-generation Galvestonians returning to their roots. Others are drawn from Houston, Austin, and beyond—seeking not just a vacation home but a sanctuary.

It’s a place where children learn to surf alongside their grandparents, where Christmas dinners are served barefoot on the porch, and where July 4th parades see entire blocks decorated in bunting and bells. These are the kinds of traditions that don’t fade with trends. They only deepen.

And because the community values continuity, homes here are built to last. Materials are chosen not just for beauty but for longevity. Architecture follows local tradition with a fresh eye. There’s a reverence for craftsmanship. A celebration of permanence.

THE SAFETY OF PROXIMITY, THE LUXURY OF PEACE

While Beachtown feels blissfully removed, it’s never fully remote. The historic heart of Galveston—with The Grand Opera House, art galleries, fine dining, and The Bryan Museum—is just a short bike ride away. So too are the necessities: top-tier medical care at UTMB, charming coffee shops, family-friendly attractions, and every convenience required for daily life.

In Beachtown, you don’t sacrifice ease for elegance. You get both.

A GENTLE INVITATION TO BEGIN ANEW

Perhaps what sets Beachtown apart most is the feeling it evokes. It’s difficult to articulate until you’ve stood on that porch, heard the cicadas hum in rhythm with the tide, and watched your children run free beneath an

open sky. It’s Georgia’s Jekyll Island or a pinch of The Hamptons mixed with Downtown Charleston, South Carolina’s charm.

There's freedom here. A peace. A knowing.

It’s in the way neighbors wave from their golf carts, in the sound of wind through sea oats, in the quiet dignity of a community that doesn’t need to shout to make itself known. There’s no sense of urgency here. Only belonging.

For families considering building a coastal retreat, Beachtown offers something rare: the opportunity to plant roots in a place that honors its past, nurtures the present, and prepares for the future. Whether you dream of morning walks on a boardwalk, porch swings at sunset, or a place where your children—and one day their children—will always feel at home, you’ll find it here.

A FINAL WORD FROM THE SEA

The Gulf whispers to those who listen. And here, in Beachtown, it speaks a little louder—telling stories of those arriving and welcoming those who will come next. It tells you this is a place worth loving. Worth returning to. Worth sharing.

For those ready to write their chapter in this coastal tale, the time is now. The tide is rising, the beach is growing, and the porches are waiting— ready to cradle your family’s next story in the soft hush of salt and sea.

The beach is growing, the porches are waiting—ready to cradle your family in the soft hush of salt and sea.

Skincare for Every Skin Story

HOW THE FACIAL & WELLNESS SOCIETY REDEFINES ESTHETICS EDUCATION

Three women, one mission: elevating esthetics education. TFWS CEO and Owner Kimberly Mason.

When most beauty schools closed their doors during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Facial & Wellness Society unveiled its training institute.

On May 17, 2020, just one day after receiving its license and three days before Texas’s pandemic shutdowns, the school welcomed its first students. That bold move marked the beginning of a new chapter in esthetics education.

Rather than delay opening during the pandemic, founder Kimberly Mason developed a hybrid model combining online learning with in-person instruction. That flexibility helped launch the school on schedule and continues to serve students today.

The Facial & Wellness Society (TFWS) is transforming how estheticians are trained. With a focus on medically compromised skin, business readiness and inclusive care, TFWS has become a trailblazer in holistic skincare education.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO SPECIALIZED SKIN CARE

TFWS was created to fill a gap in the industry: estheticians trained to care for clients with complex health conditions. Whether it’s cancer, diabetes, autoimmune disorders or burn recovery, these clients need gentle, customized treatments—and practitioners with the knowledge and sensitivity to provide them.

That spirit of service extends beyond the classroom. Students and graduates frequently volunteer their time and skills to provide care for patients undergoing cancer treatment or dealing with skin issues caused by other serious conditions. These experiences deepen their empathy and reinforce the real-world impact of their training.

“Clients are delighted to find there are estheticians trained to meet their needs,” says Director of Operations Donna Williamson.

PIONEERING ONCOLOGY TRAINING

In August 2023, Sawayla Ugwuegbu, former senior program director at Houston Methodist The Woodlands Health Education and Learning (HEAL) program, joined TFWS as president. Drawn to TFWS’s oncology training, she collaborated with Kimberly to expand it.

A 12-hour module grew into a 32-hour COA program— meeting standards recognized by both esthetics and medical professionals—the only such accredited oncology course for estheticians.

Though other oncology-focused programs have since emerged, none match TFWS in depth or accreditation.

GOING BEYOND THE BASICS

Texas requires 750 hours of training to become a licensed esthetician. For makeup, the mandate is 60 hours, often reduced to just a few hands-on hours at many schools. TFWS offers 100 hours in makeup and color theory, covering airbrush techniques, color correction, highlighting and contouring. Students describe it as “like an art class.”

The curriculum at TFWS emphasizes anatomy and physiology so students understand the science behind skin conditions. This foundation helps graduates deliver personalized care that goes beyond esthetics to improve quality of life. The program also teaches business fundamentals, so graduates are equipped to run successful practices of their own.

INCLUSIVITY AT THE CORE

Inclusivity is at the heart of the Fearless Beauties certification at TFWS. Students learn to care for all skin types, with in-depth education on ethnic diversity. The curriculum prepares estheticians to serve a wide range of clients with varying skin needs and physical conditions, including clients in wheelchairs. TFWS was among the first Texas schools to prioritize this training.

LOOKING AHEAD

In 2025 and beyond, TWFS is expanding access through community partnerships. With industry growth ahead, the school is welcoming more students and providing third-party scholarships to survivors of human trafficking and individuals experiencing hardship within the community.

In a mere five years, TFWS has become known for innovation and excellence, providing aspiring estheticians with advanced training to confidently care for clients with medically complex skin and make a meaningful impact.

“Clients are delighted to find there are estheticians trained to meet their needs.”

Why You Should Really Go See Ken

Have you seen Ken?

You probably have—either in person or through the mystery of a familiar bumper sticker ever-present in your subconscious. If the latter is true, let us introduce you to a local cycling and triathlon legend, and the man behind the “Go See Ken” stickers: Ken Thurlow of Bike Lane, located in the Sam Moon Shopping Center in Shenandoah.

If you’ve lived in The Woodlands—or anywhere nearby—in the past decade, not only have you seen the “Go See Ken” bumper stickers, but you’ve likely seen someone riding a bike from Ken’s shop. Bike Lane opened its original store 30 years ago in North Houston with Ken as its general manager. Though the name later changed from Bike Line to Bike Lane, their commitment to excellence has remained the same—and so has Ken’s.

BUMPER STICKER STARDOM

From Bike Lane’s inception, Ken has kept to his tried-and-true methods of putting the customer first and giving back to the broader community. Coming from a family dedicated to exceptional customer service and community involvement in the biking world, Ken’s own commitment to excellence—on and off the road—reveals the depth of his professionalism and character. Proof of that excellence can be seen on the back of thousands of cars throughout the state and abroad.

We asked Ken how the whole sticker craze caught on.

“It has been said for years from people looking for a bike or coming into town from another country that they would ask their friends or co-workers where to get a bike, and they would say, ‘Go See Ken,’” he says. "Someone recommended that we get a ‘Go See Ken’ sticker and we did. We were told that it would never catch on. Well, it did, and now it is all over the world.”

With such global testimonials, it’s no wonder Ken has become a local Woodlands legend—and a national name in the bike and tri world.

Over the years, Ken has partnered with top-tier cyclists including members of the 7-Eleven Team, Greg LeMond, and Gary Fisher. He has also been involved in cycling philanthropy with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s MS-150 ride and the Special Olympics.

WHERE THE RUBBER HITS THE ROAD

Bike Lane has also become the premier bike shop for all kinds of cyclists—the place where rubber hits the road. Offering brands like

Bike Lane has become the premier bike shop for all kinds of cyclists.

Quintana Roo, Cannondale, Scott, Haro, Sun, Aventon and more, Bike Lane was recognized as a Top 10 Cannondale dealer and an Industry Leader by the Heron Council, and in 2024, it was voted “Best Bike Shop” by the Houston Press

Catering not only to the serious cyclist, but also to anyone who simply enjoys riding bikes, Bike Lane sells high-caliber road and tri bikes, as well as competitive racing bikes, recreational bikes, mountain bikes, kids’ bikes, adult trike bikes, unicycles, hybrid bikes and e-bikes.

Whether you’ve caught the triathlon bug, are an experienced cyclist or simply an exercise enthusiast, Ken’s selection of road bikes is bar none— and outpaces his competition by a long shot with Bike Lane now being one of the largest triathlon and bike stores in the country.

The shop also heavily invests in the broader cycling community—hosting the Huntsville Classic Mountain Bike Race and serving as a main partner for Ironman Texas. Bike Lane works with local triathlon and cycling coaches, too, to promote a lifestyle dedicated to fitness, competition, and self-betterment. Ken not only offers full-service repairs and maintenance to help get your wheels turning, but he will also refer you to a local coach.

A CYCLIST’S SUMMER

Whether it’s a cool autumn morning, a glowing spring sunset or a dazzling summer day,  Ken says his favorite place to ride yearround is anywhere in our great state of Texas.

With The Woodlands Township providing more than 220 miles of hike and bike trails, locals of all ages can enjoy the wonder and convenience our beautiful community has to offer. So why not go on a ride this summer? (Just don’t forget to hydrate!) And if you need a new bike, tires, cycling shoes, helmets, race-day nutrition and more—you know what to do.

The "Go See Ken" bumper sticker craze began in 2015.

THE HILL COUNTRY IS CALLING

From Fredericksburg to Luckenbach, Llano to Enchanted Rock

There are places that whisper your name, there are those that sing it. The Texas Hill Country does the latter—its limestone bluffs, winding rivers, and sun-dappled vineyards composing a melody too enchanting to ignore. This summer, let its song guide you. Where time slows, air sweetens, and the land reveals its romantic soul.

Fields of bluebonnets may yield to the golden hues of summer grasses, but their magic lingers. Fredericksburg beckons with its German heritage, while Wimberley offers deep swimming holes and artisan markets nestled beneath ancient cypress trees. There’s music in Luckenbach, peaches in Stonewall, and starlight over Enchanted Rock— each a note in the Hill Country’s timeless refrain.

Whether you seek the cool embrace of the Blanco River or the bold taste of a Tempranillo poured beneath a vineyard pergola, the experience is rooted in authenticity. The Hill Country isn't curated—it's lived. Porch lights flicker in rhythm with fireflies, and conversations last as long as the twilight.

It’s a region best explored with windows down, senses open, and no particular agenda beyond delight. Pause in Llano for smoked brisket done right, or stay the night at a restored limestone inn where the cicadas hum their evening chorus.

This summer, don’t just escape the city. Answer the call

The Hill Country beckons.

The Invisible Tourist

HAGER AND PROVIDED

London doesn’t ask to be admired—it simply is. She’s not a city that preens for attention but one that hums with centuries of quiet power. Beneath the surface of iconic landmarks and ceremonial fanfare lies a London known only to locals: a city of bookshops nestled between Georgian terraces and centuries-old pubs that don’t require signage because everyone already knows.

If you’ve ever longed to experience London without the sterile glaze of tourist glass, this very brief guide is for you. It is, in essence, an invitation to become an invisible tourist.

BEGIN WITH THE BASICS: SPEAK THE LOCAL CODE

Before your boots touch the cobblestones, download the Citymapper app and set it to London. It will quickly become your closest companion, guiding you seamlessly from the quiet backstreets of Marylebone to the dizzying energy of Soho, whether by Tube, bus, black cab or foot.

And when you do find yourself shoulder-to-shoulder with the morning rush, remember: in London, “excuse me” won’t get you far. Say “sorry” instead. It’s the universally accepted punctuation mark for life’s little collisions. Say it when you brush past someone, when you drop your Oyster card, when you can’t decide between two pastries.

SEE LONDON FROM ABOVE—FOR FREE

You needn’t spend $40 for a capsule on the London Eye to glimpse the city’s grandeur. For a view that feels more insider, ascend to Sky Garden—a tropical oasis in the clouds atop the Walkie-Talkie building. With a free (albeit timed) ticket, you’ll take in the Thames curling like a silver ribbon through the metropolis.

A more grounded—but no less romantic— panorama can be found at Parliament Hill,

nestled in the vast greenery of Hampstead Heath. On clear days, it offers a postcard view of the skyline, all without a queue or fee.

THE CHARM OF VILLAGES WITHIN THE METROPOLIS

London, like The Woodlands, is a mosaic of villages, each with its own personality, rhythm and preferred flavor of coffee. Yes, Notting Hill is charming (especially in spring when the wisteria returns like a royal flush), but Hampstead is a living poem. Ramble through the forested trails of Hampstead Heath, then reward yourself with a pint at The Wells, where polished wood and quiet laughter offer sanctuary.

Or lose an afternoon in Dulwich Village, where low-slung cottages, ivy-clad fences and the smell of warm scones guide

you like a compass. Visit the Dulwich Picture Gallery, Britain’s oldest public art gallery, and linger over a flat white at Romeo Jones, a café beloved by locals who don’t care for trends.

MARKETS THAT MATTER

Markets in London are living theatres. At Borough Market, your senses are baptized in the scent of sizzling chorizo, the gleam of fresh oysters and the symphony of accents haggling over hand-pulled pasta. Camden Market is for the dreamers and the daring, with its vinyl shops and fashion experiments.

SKIP THE RUSH, TAKE THE LONG WAY

Avoid the Northern Line during rush hour unless you long to be packed like sardines. Even Londoners will advise you to walk when you can. This is a city best explored slowly, deliberately.

alleyways, toward ivy-draped entries, and you’ll find the soul of the city, pint in hand and conversation in full flow.

And to understand Britain’s modern soul, be sure to dine at an Indian restaurant. Whether it’s a corner curry house in Islington or a Michelin-starred marvel in Mayfair, these dishes are part of London’s true culinary identity.

SEE LONDON IN A MINI

As charming as the Tube may seem to the uninitiated, its labyrinthine passages can make a 10-minute walk into a 25-minute slog, complete with platform stairs and missed connections.

And oh, the joy of walking here—past brick façades, hidden gardens and the occasional fox darting through the mews. You’ll see more in 10 minutes on foot than in 30 minutes underground.

PUB ETIQUETTE: KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Walk into a pub, find a seat and wait to be served—and you’ve marked yourself as an outsider. True Londoners know to approach the bar, order their drinks and only then select a table. The best pubs are never the ones with neon signs or views of Westminster. Look down

For the ultimate boutique experience, tour the city in an original Mini Cooper with Small Car Big City. Their guides are storytellers, historians and navigators all rolled into one. You’ll zip through narrow lanes, under arches and past monuments, the wind tousling your hair as Big Ben swings briefly into view. It’s delightfully cinematic—Bond meets Beatles meets bespoke.

FINAL THOUGHTS

To know London is to know layers. To truly experience her is to resist the urge to rush and instead allow the city to unfold, street by street, pub by pub, village by village. Go beyond the postcards. Seek out the quiet corners and let the city’s unspoken beauty reveal itself.

In doing so, you’ll cease being a visitor—and become, however briefly, one of her own.
