Count all the wishes that have already come true

To my dear reader friends,

Merry, Merry, Merry!

A new Holiday Season is dawning and the end of another year is drawing to a close. To celebrate these beautiful winter moments, let's shift our focus to "being present" instead of perpetuating a frenzied state of buying presents!

Reflect on the past year - the changes, your growth, struggles, loss, career change, a new love, friendships, relationships, etc. Bring them to light and honor the good and release the negative. A New Year is around the corner and the possibilities are endless if you keep an open door. Every year, after Christmas, when I'm putting the decorations away, I have the same thought. "The next time I open this box, an entire year will have passed. And what will these next days, weeks and months hold? Where we will all be?"

This was my favorite issue because I spent several days with Santa on his secret mission of finding luxurious gifts for those who made his "Really, Really Nice List." Enjoy the Gift Guide! We visited YETI, Thomas Markle, Breitling, Genesis of Spring, The Post Oak Motor Collection, Truluck's and Atelier Haus Interiors.

As always, we have a brilliant artist feature on Holly Nowak and her creative journey of art and regrouping after a devastating loss. A favorite story in this issue is a stunning travel piece on traveling in Maine. (Bucket list destination for me!)

Try to remember that this can be a difficult time of year for lots of people emotionally and financially. There are families struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table year round, not just for the holidays. We can help those in-need families in the community. Join our own mission to help families in The Woodlands through our “Making Spirits Bright” campaign nominating someone who deserves a Christmas Blessing. See our story and scan code. Several churches have Holiday outreach programs and missions that do just that. Reach out to your own church to see how you can contribute or get involved. 'Tis the season to give. Donate to your local food bank, food pantries and organizations that work closely to help raise money for those less privileged families.

Wishing you a Cool Yule!

HEALING BEGINS HERE

CREATE A SAFE SPACE FOR CHILDREN ONE STEP AT A TIME WITH CHILDREN’S SAFE HARBOR

“Justice. Healing. Hope”. As Children’s Safe Harbor’s new tagline, it is precisely what this nonprofit strives to achieve for every abused child who walks through their door while watching hope blossom, proving the child’s ability to live a full, happy life.

For over 26 years, Children’s Safe Harbor has been serving children and their families throughout Montgomery, Walker, and San Jacinto counties. In fact, since opening their doors, they have supported over 29,000 traumatized children and are considered one of the largest children’s advocacy centers.

Their mission, “to achieve justice and healing for every abused child and engage our community in that mission” holds so much depth and will soon be serving the community on 18 beautiful acres in their new, permanent facility. It will include “an area for forensic interviewing, law enforcement, a conference and training center, and a medical clinic, and will be highlighted by a beautiful central healing garden.” And that is only the first floor! The second floor will be devoted to counseling programs, CPS partners, and a centralized break room and gym for the wellbeing of staff and partners.

Upon learning about their plans for the new location, I had the wonderful honor of meeting with Children’s Safe Harbor’s executive director, Dr. Victoria Constance, whose passion for children’s safety and healing radiantly shines.

“It’s not just a building, it’s a gateway,” says Victoria when discussing their new 45,000 square-foot site nestled in a stunning wooded area of Conroe.

Children's Safe Harbor's Healing Garden

Rewind to 2016 which is when the new expanded center was first spoken into existence. Realizing their need for a bigger facility, Children’s Safe Harbor decided to put those plans into action, but three years later, when they were to begin the first push, COVID-19 shut down the world, thus pushing their fundraising back as well as the timeline.

Later, in February of 2021, they attempted again to get started on the capital campaign fundraising but the weather, aka Houston’s “snowmageddon,” had other plans. While Children’s Safe Harbor’s new building continued to experience setbacks, they never stopped pursuing the ultimate goal of a safe place for children and their families.

Finally, in 2023, contracts were signed with Tellepsen Construction Company which set the wheels in motion for Children’s Safe Harbor’s new gateway! Ground was broken this year on August 22, 2024, and plans to finish the building are estimated for fall 2025.

"Our new facility will enable us to continue to deliver on our mission - to protect and enhance the life of every child who has the courage to battle sexual and physical abuse - well into the future,” says Victoria.

Donors such as Robert and Kim Marling of Woodforest Charitable Foundation and Mike and Vanessa Manners of Manners/Coole Foundation, have made breaking ground on the building possible along with several others!

Still, Children’s Safe Harbor is in need of roughly three million dollars to fully accomplish a thriving, resource for children and their families. There is always something you, as the community, can do to love the families around you, and donating to Safe Harbor, no matter the donation, can help tremendously!

Please consider visiting their website at childrens safeharbor.org Capital Campaign for more information on how you can help support them and the community around you. Just one step can help accomplish “Justice. Healing. Hope.” for thousands of children.

Goode cheer is here, and with it, the good food, gifts, and reflection that make the holidays even richer. The meal may be the call to gather, but the traditions and memories made ’round the table—learning to carve the turkey, that same joke Dad tells every year, the fight for the last slice of pie, the most creative use of leftovers—now that’s the cheer we’re here for.

Pre-order holiday meals, pies, sides, and more by December 15th at GOODECHRISTMAS.COM for convenient pickup at Goode Co. Fish Camp in The Woodlands.

HOPE FOR THE HOLIDAYS

A Highlight of Events at Woodlands Area Churches with a ‘Mission’ to Serve This Season

The Christmas Season brings ample opportunity for families to gather for joyous celebrations and fellowship. Local churches offer events and opportunities to extend that joy to families in need. You are invited to join in on the spirit of giving to bring hope for the holidays.

“I feel light, like I’m helping people who right now are not able to help themselves. I picture myself, what I would do and how much I would depend on people like that. That is what really pushes me to help and share what I have that they may not.”
— 10-year-old Ellie, Trinity Episcopal volunteer

THE WOODLANDS METHODIST CHURCH

Christmas Miracles is an annual outreach of the Woodlands United Methodist Church. Christmas wishes are delivered to over 1500 of the most vulnerable kids and senior adults in our community. Through partnerships with local schools and nonprofits, participation in Christmas Miracles is as simple as choosing a tag from any of their venues on Sundays. The tag will list the Christmas wishes of a child or a senior. The public is invited to participate

in fulfilling the mission of Christmas Miracles as well, please contact the church to see if any tags still remain with wishes to grant.

“As a retired librarian, I witnessed the kids in my school receive Christmas gifts yearly from the Woodlands Methodist Church. As I watched moms come in, I saw they always left in tears, knowing their families would be provided for. This always melted my heart. And I knew this was the work I wanted to give

myself to after I retired,” shares Markie Lawrence, Christmas Wishes volunteer.

Woodlands Methodist will also be hosting a Christmas Feast that is open to the community. This event is a time of fun for families to come and share in Christmas cheer. If your family would like to kick off your holiday season with fun and fellowship, consider joining in on this event that is to be held on December 8th.

TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH

Their annual Angel Gift Market will be held from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon on Sunday, December 8th. It is open to the community and is a festive occasion for all ages. The church’s social hall will be filled with Christmas displays and booths representing all the church’s outreach ministries and outreach partners. Visitors have the opportunity to select which community programs and causes they’d like to support. Donors can request a greeting card to give to a friend or relative with a note saying a donation was made in their name, offering a thoughtful, alternative gift option.

“I enjoy taking my grandchildren because they witness the goodwill of giving and can select a ministry to which they can donate,” says Sandra Soghikian, Community Outreach Coordinator 10-year-old Ellie, shares why she enjoys volunteering, “I feel light, like I’m helping people who right now are not able to help themselves. I picture myself, what I would do and how much I would depend on people like that. That is what really pushes me to help and share what I have that they may not.”

Trinity Episcopal also meets community needs with their Wall of Generosity gathering of food. Individuals and families donate boxes or bags of groceries for families who otherwise would not be able to buy food for a holiday meal. The men’s group, The Prime Time Guys, builds a wall of all the boxed food on the stage of the community hall to give visual representation to the impact being made through generous giving. Then, the church partners with Interfaith of the Woodlands who distributes the food to families they have identified in need. Trinity would love your help with their Wall of Generosity drive. The public can bring bags or boxes of groceries to the church office or Butler Hall.

Trinity’s Youth group also collects toys and gift cards for children who would otherwise go without gifts at Christmas. The donations are given to Interfaith of the Woodlands for the holiday shopping event hosted for families who are invited to select gifts for their children at no cost.

CHRIST CHURCH METHODIST

Christ Church Methodist on Research Forest begins their holiday outreach in November each

year with a Pumpkin Patch open to the public. The proceeds from the sale of pumpkins go to support their local and global mission partners.

They also have a team that cooks turkeys and helps serve at the Salvation Army in Conroe’s Thanksgiving Feast. While this event has already happened this season, the generosity is felt throughout the holiday season.   Join in on their generous giving by helping them package boxes of food for Compassion United. These are delivered to families in need in the Conroe area during the holiday season.

Every Christmas Season, Christ Church Methodist participates in the Interfaith of the Woodlands Toy Drive and they welcome the public’s support in this as well. New, unwrapped toys can be dropped off at the church by Tuesday, December 10. Christ Church Methodist invites the public to learn about their monthly, local serving opportunities by visiting their website.

SLADE AND CINDY LEWIS - PASSIONATE ADVOCATES FOR COMMUNITY

BRIETLING AND THE LEWIS FAMILYPASSION AND PURPOSE

ARTICLE BY TRAVIS HAGER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PRESLEY DANIEL
Slade and Cindy Lewis

Every month here at The Woodlands City Lifestyle we like to take a moment and make connections between local business owners and our amazing community. This month we are highlighting Slade and Cindy Lewis. The husband and wife duo not only own the Breitling Boutique in

Slade echoes this sentiment, noting how the jewelry business opens doors to new opportunities and meaningful connections. Together, they have built a brand that thrives on the joy of celebrating life's milestones, from engagements to anniversaries.

THEIR JOURNEY EXEMPLIFIES HOW PASSION AND PURPOSE CAN LEAD TO MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS, FOSTERING A LEGACY THAT WILL INSPIRE FUTURE GENERATIONS.

Market Street but many other businesses around Houston as well.

Slade and Cindy stand out not only as successful business owners but as passionate advocates for the community. Through their thriving jewelry businesses, (they also own renowned Lewis Jewelers), and their vibrant culinary ventures, they embody the spirit of connection, celebration, and philanthropy.

A PASSION FOR JOY AND CONNECTION

Cindy Lewis's motto captures the essence of their work: "Fostering celebrations of all kinds and making people happy is my passion." This guiding principle is evident in every piece of jewelry they create, each designed to commemorate life’s special moments.

A LEGACY OF GIVING BACK

Their commitment to community is profound, stemming from personal experiences that shaped their values. Their youngest son, Levi, born with liver issues, inspired the couple to give back. Now a strong and healthy 19-yearold, Levi’s journey led the Lewises to establish a wing at Texas Children's Hospital’s Dialysis Center, where they have been raising funds for over 18 years. Their firsthand experience with the hospital's compassionate care ignited their desire to support children facing health challenges.

Cindy's involvement in philanthropic organizations extends to the Friendswood Independent School District (FISD) Education Foundation Board, reflecting her belief in the

importance of education and community support. Slade, with a background in orthopedic medicine, remains active in the medical field as a board member of HCA and the Fibroblast Company, emphasizing their commitment to both healthcare and education.

AN IMPRESSIVE PORTFOLIO

Lewis Jewelers has made significant strides beyond local engagements. As the Official Jeweler of University of Houston Athletics, they have established a prominent presence in the sports community. Their relationship with NASA is particularly noteworthy; the Lewises have designed custom pieces of jewelry that have been sent on every space mission, including memorable items that accompanied the Challenger crew. This unique intersection of art and science showcases their versatility and innovative spirit. One of my favorite stories they tell, however, involves the Kelly brothers and the International Space Station.

In a remarkable intersection of space, family, and impeccable customer service, a story unfolded in 2016 involving retired astronaut Mark Kelly and his brother, Scott Kelly, who was aboard the International Space Station (ISS). During a dinner in New York, Mark received a call from Scott, who found himself in a bit of a predicament. While on a mission, his Breitling Cosmonaut watch had its bracelet snagged on a handrail, rendering it unusable.

Understanding the urgency, Scott reached out to Mark, knowing he is a Breitling ambassador. “Can you help me get this fixed?” he asked, highlighting the trust and connection that exists even in the vastness of space.

Mark sprang into action. He coordinated with a crew member leaving for Baikonur, sending a repair kit to Houston just days before the Soyuz launch. Remarkably, within a mere three days, the watch repair kit made its journey from Houston to Baikonur and then up to the ISS, showcasing an extraordinary example of quick thinking and collaboration.

This story survives to reflect the personal connections that can bridge vast distances but also underscores the ethos

“A REMARKABLE INTERSECTION OF SPACE, FAMILY, AND IMPECCABLE CUSTOMER SERVICE.”

of service and community that the Lewis family embodies in their own endeavors.

In addition to their jewelry business, the couple has recently expanded into the culinary world with two restaurants: Good Vibes Coastal Kitchen in Pearland and Good Vibes Coastal Cantina in League City. These establishments reflect their philosophy of creating joy through food and community.

STYLE AND RECOGNITION

Cindy’s flair for fashion has also garnered attention, earning her a feature in Harper's Bazaar magazine. This recognition speaks to her influence not only as a businesswoman but as a trendsetter in the industry.

A UNIQUE BOND

Beyond their professional pursuits, Slade’s connection to sports shines through his dedication to running marathons alongside a special friend who is blind and deaf. This bond illustrates his belief in overcoming challenges and highlights the importance of support and community.

LOOKING AHEAD

As Slade and Cindy Lewis continue to thrive in their diverse endeavors, their story is one of resilience, compassion, and celebration. They are not just business leaders; they are pillars of the community, committed to making a difference through work and philanthropy. Their journey exemplifies how passion and purpose can lead to meaningful connections, fostering a legacy that will inspire future generations.

THIS 7-DAY COASTAL MAINE ITINERARY WILL SOOTHE YOUR SOUL

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Maine is such a faraway place for Texans, but getting there is easy with a direct flight into Boston Logan International Airport. Pick up your rental car, and within an hour you’ll be soaking in the natural beauty of the state that’s aptly nicknamed “Vacationland.”

BUT FIRST, LOBSTER.

Don’t miss Rye Harbor Lobster Pound in New Hampshire. It’s on the way, and it serves two classic lobster rolls—one lightly tossed with mayo and minced celery then piled high in a split-top bun; the other bathed in warm sherry

butter and served in a toasted bun. Pair them with a cup of “fluffy” clam chowder crowned with a generous mound of more lobster!

MAKE PORTLAND YOUR HOME BASE.

Spend three nights at The Press Hotel or Canopy Portland Waterfront. Explore the cobblestone streets of the Old Port district, browsing the local boutiques and galleries. Take a lobster boat tour of Casco Bay to see the residential islands and area lighthouses, including the iconic Portland Head Light.

Portland’s celebrated culinary scene includes many award-winning restaurants. Eventide offers a raw bar and serves Maine seafood classics; the hyper-local menu at Leeward is anchored by house-made pastas; and the dishes at Fore Street reflect its longstanding relationships with area farmers, foragers and fisheries. Don’t miss the Maine potato donuts at The Holy Donut and coffee at Bard, Tandem, or Small’s, where you can also sample wine and oysters.

DAY-TRIP TO THE SOUTHERN COAST.

Start your day near York at Nubble Lighthouse overlooking the Atlantic. Then head to Ogunquit’s Marginal Way, a seaside cliff walk. It’s a short drive from there to Kennebunk and Kennebunkport (“The Kennebunks”), known for their shipbuilding heritage and historic architecture. Feast on boiled lobster and perfectly fried scallops and whole-belly clams at The Clam Shack, a favorite of the Bush family. (Swing by Walker’s Point after lunch to view the Bush compound before returning to Portland.)

Don’t miss Rye Harbor Lobster Pound in New Hampshire.

DISCOVER THE MIDCOAST.

The midcoast communities of Camden, Rockland and Rockport are replete with charming cottages, antique shops, and their idyllic harbor settings. Stay two nights at The Samoset Resort, with its sweeping bay views and access to the Rockland Breakwater, a walkable 4,000-foot

granite jetty leading to a historic lighthouse. The waterfront Rock Harbor Hotel is another great option. Dine next door at 18 Central Oyster Bar & Grill.

In the morning, tour Farnsworth Art Museum, home to works by Andrew Wyeth, Winslow Homer and others. Visit the local lighthouses and sip a latte at Rock City Coffee Roasters.

A MOUNT DESERT ENDING.

Your journey concludes with two nights on Mount Desert Island. The historic, maritime town of Bar Harbor is a mix of historic inns, cute shops, and striking views of Frenchmen Bay. Treat yourself to wild blueberry soft serve at CJ’s Big Dipper, a delicious cone at Mt. Desert Island Ice Cream, or a Maine whoopie pie at Pink Pastry Shop. The Bar Harbor Inn offers excellent accommodations and dining at The Reading Room. Nearby Southwest Harbor is home to the Claremont Hotel, a chic historic property overlooking Somes Sound. Just down the road is the Wendell Gilley Museum of exquisite bird carvings.

Purchase a park pass and reserve a timed entry in advance for your trip's culmination, the stunning Cadillac Summit Road Drive in Acadia National Park. You’ll head to Bangor the next day for your flight home. Don’t be surprised if Maine beckons again before you even land!

As an artist, wife, mother and fifth-generation native Texan, I find joy in the experimental nature of creation. The process of creating feels akin to being a mad scientist or a chef, as I play with materials, discover new techniques, and embrace happy accidents in my studio. Acrylic, oil, watercolor, gouache, and illustration are among my favorite mediums.

My goal as an artist is to create pieces that resonate with me on a personal level, reflecting my mood and the emotions of the moment. I resist confining myself to a single style, allowing my artistic process to evolve naturally. Sharing my knowledge, time, and passion for creating with others is a core part of my artistic mission. I aim to inspire those who may doubt their creative abilities and encourage them to find joy in the process of creation.

My deep love for nature and the outdoors is evident in my work, particularly my affinity for Bison. This connection was solidified during a pivotal moment in my life when I left a ten year career, embarked on a solo camping trip with my dog to paint in Caprock Canyons, Texas. A profound and spiritual encounter with a bull bison during this journey set me on the path to becoming a professional artist, shaping my artistic career. The transformative experience of that solitary time in the canyons continues to influence my art, with Bison and the Texas Landscape holding a special place in my heart.

Transitioning from a successful career to pursue my artistic dreams has not only honed my skills as an artist but has also ignited a profound passion for motivating and uplifting others to delve into their own creativity. Through my workshops and events, I aspire to empower fellow artists to uncover their unique voices and provide a nurturing environment where they can nourish their creative spark. With a steadfast commitment to fostering a supportive and encouraging atmosphere, I am wholeheartedly dedicated to guiding others on their personal artistic journeys.

For over a decade, I have been happily sharing my artistic passion with students of all ages from my cozy home studio just outside of Houston. Surrounded by my lush gardens and cherished pets, including a delightful flock of hens affectionately known as "The Ladies," I discover endless wells of inspiration for my creations.

Following a devastating arson fire that destroyed my artwork and materials in 2022, I found healing and transformation through the kindness of others and being asked to help a friend co-teaching at the La Romita School of Art in Italy. This experience marked a significant turning point in my journey as an artist and woman, reigniting my sense of bravery and purpose.

Now, you can find me at my Winter Street studio nestled in Houston's historic arts district, where I host monthly events for collectors and the public. Additionally, I lead workshops and retreats in Texas and Italy, offering a space for artistic exploration and growth.

Returning to Italy in 2025 to lead my own workshop is a milestone I eagerly anticipate. The meditative power of art has been a constant source of solace and clarity for me, particularly during challenging times. The quote "The opposite of depression is not happiness. It's creation" deeply resonates with me, encapsulating the transformative role art has played in my life. Through my art and stories, I aim to inspire others to find balance, self-confidence, and peace through the act of creating, trusting the journey, and embracing the CREATIVE.

Making Spirits

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com
