Dear readers,
We're thrilled to highlight some of the amazing women in The Woodlands who are making their mark in various fields. From ballet dancers and esthetician school leaders to restaurateurs, artists, governing officials, volunteers, teachers, and more, these women are truly inspiring.
Lindbergh once wrote, "I think that one's growth is always marked by a kind of coming-of-age crisis”….. As she explains – we should count on ourselves and not have to prove herself through opposite poles of dependence and competition, of both Victorianism and Feminism. Neither is her center, she must find her true center alone and become whole” This quote resonates with me, not only because it reflects the universal experience of growth and change, but also because it underscores the unique challenges that women face in navigating their own path of self-discovery.
As a woman in the publishing industry, I'm constantly inspired by the women who are pushing boundaries and making their voices heard. While publishing may not be a male-dominated industry, it's still a challenging field, and I'm proud to be part of a group of strong, talented women who are breaking new ground every day.
In this issue, we're excited to share our Mother's Day gift guide, filled with great experiences and gift ideas for the special moms in your life. Annette Palmer, a local artist, gives us a glimpse of her next exhibition and our feature on jewelry designers who bring “sparkle” to your life. Our stories showcase going outside the norms and encouraging new activities and experiences for all.
So here's to all the amazing moms out there who are raising the next generation of strong, empowered women. We appreciate you, we celebrate you, and we wish you a very happy Mother's Day.
Thanks for reading, and cheers to you!

Girls Night WAY Out
If one more night at book club holds the same excitement as reading the phone book, it may be time to shake up your Girl’s Night Out plans. There’s no shortage of things to do in The Woodlands area, but for a real change of pace and a night to remember, don’t just go out, go all out!
No one understands that better than Michelle Nunez-Dement and her group of gal pals. Every Tuesday and Thursday evening they get together at the Rainbow Roller Rink, tie on their skates,

pad up and become the Conroe Cutthroats Roller Derby Team. Teachers, nurses, artists, moms, students, with ages ranging from 20’s into the 60’s, they skate, laugh and cheer each other on. Considering that the goal is to be the toughest girls on wheels, they happen to be the warmest, most welcoming, friendliest group of women you’ll find.
Roller derby is a rare example of a grassroots community rising from the ashes of a dead professional sport. It has grown into a movement, developing its own traditions and culture. Players skate under pun-laden nicknames, develop signature looks, and champion inclusivity. While it began as an endurance race in the 1920’s as a professional sport, promoters developed rivalries and fans loved the skaters sometimes being billed as “good or bad” guys. It closely resembled professional wrestling. Today it is a local league run by volunteers, but its appeal is still “noise, color and body contact”.
“Absolutely bring your friends and come out,” or make new friends that will last a lifetime encourages Michelle. “We’re all open arms.” She points out that you need no experience on skates, they embrace the wall-huggers, too. “Only do what you’re comfortable doing. We can teach it all to you,” she said. The team also loans any necessary gear to those who want to come try it out.
Plan on coming out to join the team and see if you have what it takes. Some just come for the exercise and the friendship, choosing to be non-contact participants, and some have been skating together for over a decade. Only 15 make the roster for the monthly games during the season that runs from March through October, while others will act as non-skating officials. The team plays by Women’s Flat Track Derby Association rules against teams around Texas and the surrounding states.
“We’re a very competitive team, but we’re still here for fun,” said Michelle, who is called by her derby name, Taz, (short for Taz-Maim-Ya) whenever she’s at the rink. “Anyone is welcome to just show up at practice by themselves or as a group”. They can be messaged through their Conroe Cutthroats Facebook page or their website ConroeRollerDerby.com.
For the girl group looking to cut through another dull night out, Woodlands Axe is the perfect answer. That axe throwing requires brute strength and muscles is a huge misperception. Form, accuracy, and precision – areas where so many women excel – are the key components to this sport that’s rapidly growing in popularity. You may just be surprised that your co-worker may have a secret talent at axe throwing. Axe throwing has been taken to the next level.

Michelle Nunez "Taz-Maim-Ya" and "Whiskey on the Blocks"
The modern sport of axe throwing involves a competitor throwing an axe at a target, attempting to hit the bullseye as near as possible. Axe throwing has historically been an event in lumberjack competitions, but in 2020, commercial locations started opening in Canada. Why, because it is great “FUN” and a great way to channel your inner strength. It has become a global pastime and a Woodlands favorite place to gather.
Jeff Elkins of Woodlands Axe has computerized using projected targets that allow for different games and challenges. “There’s only so much you can do with a painted-on target. With the projection, you can change it up, keep it fun.” It is great fun for an impromptu night out or a party.
The nine open lanes and two private lanes, each accommodating six players per lane, are paired with a designated table to relax at between turns and enjoy some food and drinks from the house bar. Party rooms are also available for hosting corporate team-building events, celebrations and special occasions.
As more women and their families discover the fun and challenge of axe throwing, they’re coming with their Mother’s Day Out groups, for drink specials like Wine Down Wednesday, bachelorette parties, or with groups of homeschooled students on Fridays. No special skills or experience is required, and Woodlands Axe provides all the coaching to get started throwing axes, knives and Ninja stars.
“Axe throwing is becoming the new bowling,” said Jeff. “There are leagues and tournaments. We have people come just to hang out with friends.” You should probably plan on making reservations for a group or just drop in with a friend after work.

Traditional axe throwing challenges are changing
After kicking off the skates and putting down the axe, Kernita Heard, owner of Almost August in downtown Conroe, has everything you need to relax with friends and create your own perfect spa experience. Her Wick & Wine candle-making parties are pleasantly paired with wine tasting for the escape every woman wants. Humble as they may seem, candles have a long and storied history. From Roman Italy to the Qin Dynasty of ancient China. Civilization has relied on candles for thousands of years, and many great thinkers across the world have contributed to candle-making as we know it today. Kernita has put her own beautiful touch on candles today in Montgomery County.
Curated at her elegant shop that opened last August, Kernita guides groups of ten or less through her fragrance menu to combine all the right notes for the perfect scent. After a container is chosen, all the candle elements are skillfully combined for each unique creation. “There are a few tricks of the trade, like how much fragrance for the wax, but I love sharing that and making it fun,” said Kernita, who had started making candles and soaps at home as a hobby.

While the wax hardens, pre-selected wine flights and charcuterie await a short walk away in the Blue Room at BE Winery’s The Lounge on Main. Candles are then bagged to take home with a handwritten note. “It’s a different experience than just going out for drinks. At the end of the night, you have something special to keep,” she said. “And I like being able to partner with other local businesses.” She is also able to coordinate bigger groups at other downtown locations.

If your group would rather stay closer to home, Almost August can come to you. Kernita brings everything necessary to light up a shower, birthday, corporate event, or Girl’s Night In. “You provide your own wine, and my husband is there to pour and let you enjoy your time with your friends,” she said.
Kernita’s Almost August plans to partner with her daughter Safiya St. Rose to add classes for potting decorative plants.
For now, though, availability for her lighthearted, unrushed classes fills up quickly and reservations can be made online at AlmostAugust.shop. However, a visit in person to browse her handcrafted soaps, scrubs and body butters, candles and linen sprays is highly recommended.
So, the next time the girls decide to get together, throw the book at boring and think outside the box for a much more exciting group adventure. It is amazing what you may find out about your friends and what fires their imaginations.

IT TAKES COURAGE!
“We operate on a very small budget,” Sarah said. The women’s center relies on its volunteers, especially at the Something Special resale shop. “The shop’s our number one way the programs are funded — 100% of the proceeds fund the center,” she said.
WITH YOUR HELP, THE WOMEN’S CENTER EMPOWERS SURVIVORS AND REBUILDS BROKEN LIVES.
Your gently used Dior purse could change someone’s life. So could the impossibly snug jeans, the outgrown baby clothes, or your gift of time. Montgomery County Women’s Center (MCWC) relies on your donations, whether they’re material goods or volunteered time.
Last year, WCMC received 47,468 crisis hotline calls, provided shelter for 1056 women and their dependent children, and accompanied 819 sexual assault victims to emergency rooms. MCWC couldn’t function without the generosity of our community.
Sarah Raleigh, MCWC’s President and CEO, said the center’s goal is to listen to survivors and empower them to live a violence-free and financially viable life. MCWC’s emergency shelter accommodates 75 people. It’s often full. MCWC offers longer-term transitional housing, too, where residents pay nominal rent, receive counseling, and work toward financial stability by finding work, learning a trade, or furthering their education.
Something Special relies not only on volunteers to staff the store but on your donations. Donated items are sold in the shop, used in the shelter, or fulfill wish lists. Everyone leaving transitional housing receives clothing, furniture, and housewares from the store to set up their new home.
“Besides the store, we need help almost anywhere you can imagine,” Sarah said, from assisting with children’s activities to counseling to administrative and yard work.
Ally Seder — MCWC Board Member and recipient of the Woman of Distinction Award for her contributions to the center — gives generously of her time. In 2010, Ally toured the shelter to better understand everything MCWC did. “The shelter tour blew me away. I pictured a very clinical setting, and it was just the opposite! It felt so warm and inviting,” she said. “Everyone pitched in to help.” Family-style meals and movie nights build a sense of community.
She noticed the shelter’s “store” contained donated clothing, toiletries, school supplies, and purses. Everything was free. “Many flee their homes in the middle of the night in their bathrobes and don’t even have their purse. That’s where the idea of “Open Your Purse for Change” was born,” Ally said.
The “Open Your Purse for Change” fundraiser auctions donated new or gently used handbags and wallets in October. All proceeds go to MCWC. Volunteers make this event possible, too.
For more information, visit MCWC’s website.

A COMMITTED LOVE OF OUR COMMUNITY GENERATES INCREDIBLE LEADERSHIP
Our hats are off to four remarkable leaders in The Woodlands. Meet the dynamic women who are instrumental in governing, guiding, promoting, and sustaining our community, some for decades and some more recently.
Dr. Ann K. Snyder
Dr. Ann Snyder is well known for serving on numerous boards and championing the world of nonprofits. She was first elected to The Woodlands Township Board of Directors and is currently serving as Chairwoman.
Snyder earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education, a Master of Education degree, and a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction, and says, “Experiencing learning is ongoing and lifelong, and if the opportunity presented itself, I would return.”
Snyder Elementary in Conroe ISD is named in her honor, and she visits the school on special occasions highlighting students and faculty.
We asked how she’s managed to maintain a work/life balance while being so active in Montgomery County. “I was raised in a small town in Nebraska by parents who believed in volunteering and, most importantly, doing the right thing. It became second nature to make a difference wherever I’m needed.” Fortunately, her husband, Jerry, supports her passion, purpose, and the great pride Snyder takes in The Woodlands community. Snyder strongly believes in collaboration and ensuring that individuals from all walks of life have a voice. “It’s never been about me,” she says. “Rather, it’s about developing a common understanding and creating the best possible outcomes for everyone in The Woodlands and surrounding areas.” Learn more about Dr. Snyder at thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov

Dr. Shelley Sekula-Gibbs
As a Floresville native and the oldest of three brothers and two sisters, Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, MD, loves being around people. It drew her to her first residency in family practice, followed by a second residency in dermatology—while raising two babies. “It was more than challenging, and there was no other option than to succeed,” she says of juggling motherhood and medical training.
Dr. Sekula-Gibbs was the first physician ever elected to the Houston City Council and served three terms. She also served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and witnessed President Gerald Ford’s funeral. She has served on The Woodlands Township board since 2019.
She and her husband, attorney Robert W. Gibbs, Jr., were both widowed when they married in 2002. They moved from Clear Lake to The Woodlands in 2017 to be close to family, and absolutely love the community. “I believe there is no better place for our grandchildren to thrive,” she says.
Sekula-Gibbs credits people of all backgrounds for “Keeping The Woodlands wonderful” and advocates for our special way of life—a place to live, work, worship, learn, and play. Learn more about Dr. Sekula-Gibbs at thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov.

Director of The Woodlands Township and grandmother extraordinaire!
Elizabeth Eddins is the Executive Director of Visit The Woodlands, the official destination marketing and management organization of The Woodlands Township, governed by a separate Board of Directors. Visit The Woodlands is responsible for driving visitors and economic impact on our community.
Elizabeth is a board member of the Texas Travel Alliance which uniquely positions her to amplify The Woodlands’ message and advocate on behalf of the Texas travel industry on state, national, and international levels. “The Woodlands is an amazing destination to promote to visitors and convention planners. They love taking care of business in a natural environment within walking distance of outstanding hotels, retail, dining, arts, and entertainment. Everyone I meet loves The Woodlands, and so do I,” says Eddins.
As Events Producer at KBMT (Channel 12 in Beaumont), she interviewed the stars of Live! With Regis and Kelly in New Orleans, highlighting the city and encouraging tourists to return after Hurricane Katrina. At that moment, Elizabeth realized the impact that tourism has on a destination’s heart and soul.
This spark of interest led to a position as Director of Tourism for Beaumont. She later joined Visit The Woodlands, where she continues to garner both personal and professional accolades, including Best Step-On Guide and Best Destination by Texas Travel Professionals. Visitors (and locals, too) can learn everything about our community at visitthewoodlands.com

Kristine Marlow
As President and CEO of the Montgomery County Food Bank, Kristine Marlow’s career in nonprofits came after serving eight years in the Air Force as an Aerospace Physiology Officer, where she met her husband Garth, an Air Force pilot. “My husband became a commercial pilot, and I became a faith-filled stay-at-home mom. Eventually, I took on the role of Children’s Sacrament and Formation Coordinator at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church,” she says.
Marlow and her four children volunteered at St. Anthony’s food pantry, and it was a natural segue to step into a new role at the Montgomery County Food Bank in July 2020. Covid’s impact had the whole world retreating indoors. Distance learning meant kids no longer had school meals. Businesses went under, and people lost jobs. Everyone was shell-shocked as the need for food assistance increased exponentially.
“Food is a must-have, a basic need, and a God-given right,” says Marlow, “and that’s why the Food Bank exists. We partner with more than 80 agencies and assist 65,000 people a month countywide with the help of over 700 volunteers who go to our calendar and sign up to sort, package, and distribute food. It’s a wonderful opportunity to give back and see the impact.”
Marlow and her team are also thankful for people who donate food, give money online, and spread the word about the Food Bank’s vital role in Montgomery County. Visit mcfoodbank.org to make a difference.

TWO CONTEMPORARY JEWELRY DESIGNERS, TWO UNIQUE VOICES
ARTICLE BY ANNETTE PALMER
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY THE
DESIGNERS
The jewelry we wear is an extension of our style, taste, and a hint of who we are. But some pieces go deeper, they can act as totems, influenced by those who have shaped us on our journey so far.
I was privileged to talk to two modern jewelry designers about their businesses, and about the women who have influenced them along the way.
Rebecca Lankford Designs is housed in a contemporary studio/gallery at 703 Yale Street, Houston. As well as designing and selling her own collections, which are handcrafted from precious metals, diamonds and gemstones, Rebecca represents other jewelry designers and artists. The space is a hive of creativity, where events are held and people gather.
In conversation with Rebecca, she talks of her unfaltering faith and being blessed with the gift of what she does. This gratitude is apparent in her series of faith-inspired pieces, which include prayer bracelets engraved with inscriptions, giving hope and encouragement during difficult times.
Working directly with the client, Rebecca creates unique custom pieces for weddings, engagements and other special times, but Rebecca also designs and makes one-off “reimagined” pieces, creating something new from the client’s broken, inherited, or outdated jewelry. A recent reimagined piece included the use of gemstones from the tiara that Napoleon Bonaparte gave to Marie Louise on the birth of their first child!
Growing up, Rebecca remembers her mother’s endless creativity. Her grandmother was Ukrainian and her mother a first-generation American, and she could turn her hand to anything and did. Nothing was beyond her capabilities, and she instilled the mindset of “you can

do whatever you want to do” if you pursue it with gusto and faith.
You can learn more about Rebecca, her studio, process and designs, or perhaps host an event in her retail space at rebeccalankforddesigns.com
New Orleans based jewelry designer Dominique Giordano celebrates 25 years of business this year! Her award-winning pieces are inspired by the people she meets and the stories of their lives, Dominique states that “the design comes to life when I am talking to people”, her pieces truly have an authentic human connection.
Losing both a sister and a sister-in-law to cancer led Dominique to create designs honoring their memories. The “Superstar Collection” asks “Who’s your superstar? Who’s your star in heaven? Who’s your star on earth?” we all have superstars! The original piece was inspired by a dream filled with yellow butterflies, her sister in law’s favorite color, this influenced the use of citrine stones in the original “Superstar” piece. The “Sophies Heart” collection was designed as a tribute to her sister Alexis, who passed away from cancer when her youngest child, Sophie, was just 1 year old.
Dominique is a nurturing person and has a knack for bringing friends together and jewelry socials do just that, anywhere! So, you can even host a party right here in Texas! The guests pre-order their personalized components online, and everything is mailed to be assembled at the party! It’s a fantastic idea for a birthday, bachelorette party, or other special occasions.
Currently working on her latest series, the “Mohawk” collection, Dominique tells us that it’s about “owning who you are”. Silver lined bugle beads, in bold colors, are statement pieces that are unapologetically expressive and honest about who we are.
Dominique’s information and jewelry gallery featuring her design lines made from semi-precious gemstones, pearls, sterling and fine silver, and
gold, can be found online at dgiordano.com

Often shortened to Rise, the Dallas locale has been featured in Conde Nast Traveler as one of the 20 best restaurants in Dallas. The Dallas Morning News reported a visit by President W. George, who enjoyed a Jambon & Gruyere soufflé, while First Lady Laura Bush enjoyed a Creamed Spinach soufflé. Learn more at risesouffle.com.
THROW, SPIN, AND CREATE AT CLAY BAR CO.
Introduce Mom to her inner potter! Clay Bar Co. by Potteryland Studio is a state-of-the-art venue located on Sawdust Road, offering full instruction by talented artists.
The process of shaping clay on a potter’s wheel can easily turn into a hobby — or an addiction! Try it, love it, and consider enrolling in a six-week-long beginner class. Everything you need is in one place — clay, wheels, tables, tools, glazes, and kilns! Plan ahead for a hands-on dive into “good clean fun,” which can get a bit messy as you work from your wheel.
You’ll conquer the concepts of centering, wedging, trimming, and how to glaze stoneware. Then it’s on to a first bisque firing and a second glaze firing. Eight days later, your pièce de résistance is ready for pickup.
Hourly wheel rentals are available for more experienced potters. Maybe Mom will acquire hand building skills (pinching, coiling, and slab building) to make almost anything out of clay. Learn more at theclaybar.co

wife team Ron Robare and Kimber Hardick founded this collection of studio spaces to build and grow an artist community. They also work alongside local businesses to create showcasing opportunities for artists and shopping options for art lovers looking for the perfect piece.
“Our goal is to enhance our community through open studio days and art gatherings. Recently, we welcomed Ardest Gallery to The Bella Bottega, creating a space to view and purchase 2D and 3D art from a range of local artists,” says Kimber. Visit thebellabottega.com to learn more.

Stick Season has spread beyond a season
Noah's wildly popular performance at Red Rocks in Colorado
Noah Kahan’s ever-growing tour reaches Texas

As a rising singer and songwriter, Noah Kahan, prepares to start his 2023 tour, he proclaims that he is at the peak of his career. However, it seems that his journey is only just beginning.
In the fall of 2022, Kahan released his third full album, “Stick Season”, which completely catapulted his career. After the song “Stick Season”—the album’s namesake—trended on Tik Tok the months leading up to the album release, fans highly anticipated for what was in store.
“I never thought that people would relate to living in a small town in New England,” Kahan said.
And turns out, the relatability of his songs is what drove so many new fans to his platform. “Homesick” is one of the most beloved songs from the album, and within its stunning lyricism and beautifully crafted story, fans have specifically been drawn to the stanza, “I am mean because I grew up in New England”. In fact, a trend arose on Tik Tok where fans were replacing “New England” with their hometowns.
Kahan traveled to Houston, Texas for the first night of his 2023 tour. He performed at White Oak Music Hall, a venue that seats nearly a thousand people, and sold out the show. In fact, within days, his extended tour was completely sold out.
“The last time I was in Texas there were about ninety-nine people at my show, now we have managed to sell out in the great state of Texas,” Kahan said.
This is remarkable for the young musician, considering in 2021 he was found playing at a small arcade bar in Birmingham, Alabama, called Saturn - to, in the
summer of 2022, playing in the renounced, Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado.
Though Kahan has grown through these years, he has faced many challenges. Especially in the making of his music. The “Stick Season” album, he says, is undoubtedly the most personal to him, but especially the song “Orange Juice” probably because of how personal it is. “However, Stick Season was also a challenge because after I posted a few lyrics on my socials fans really wanted the whole song. I was like ‘well, now I have to finish it’.”
Kahan also told his audience, opening night of the tour, that he was working on releasing a deluxe edition of “Stick Season”. He even tested the waters with some of his new songs when his tour reached Tennessee.
No surprise, his fans are begging for more, crowding his live streams on Instagram and pestering him on Twitter. With his Spring 2023 tour ending, it has been speculated that Kahan will take this time to add the finishing touches to his new music.
Considering he will be continuing the tour in the summer and fall, there is even the chance there will be more, new songs on his setlist. Kahan will also be performing at music festivals such as “Bonnaroo” and “Hang Out Fest”, the perfect time to experiment with old and new songs.
Right now, he hasn’t reached The Woodlands, Texas. The more his fanbase grows, the more likely he will be able to play at the Cynthia Michel Woods Pavilion in the future. Keep an eye out for his name on the radio and give his music a listen. Help bring Noah Kahan to The Woodlands, Texas.

Curiosity Links Us with Mars
SPACE SCIENCE RIGHT HERE IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY
ARTICLE BY MORGAN FREEMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NASA
For those that live in the greater Conroe area, it is commonplace to think of space and Houston synonymously. Many proudly refer to Houston as “Space City,” most have visited Space Center Houston at least once, and everyone has heard the famous phrase “Houston, we have a problem.” Even the beloved song “Deep in the Heart of Texas” begins with an ode to the night sky. Many may not know that, just like in days past, Houston is at the forefront of pushing the bounds of human exploration of the universe.
Dr. Gérman Martínez came to the United States 12 years ago from Spain to participate in that exploration. While his official bio says he “has a diverse background in data analysis, numerical modeling, instrument development, and laboratory work,” he refers to himself as a weatherman—but on Mars. Dr. Martínez is a staff scientist at the Lunar and Planetary Institute and works with NASA on Mars Rovers, Curiosity, and Perseverance.
For more than ten years the rover Curiosity has roamed the craters of Mars.
ARTIST’S
PALETTE | EDUCATION

His research centers around contributing to the prediction of weather on the red planet. He makes the distinction between prediction and contributing to prediction purposely because he says, so far, they cannot actually predict the weather very well.
What is the weather like on Mars? It’s dusty. Dr. Martinez compares the dust on Mars to water vapor on Earth. NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, of which Dr. Martínez is a team member, is busy learning how the dust cycle there works. They want to know what times of the year dust storms occur, where they will happen, and what time of day they are most likely to appear. If NASA is to send humans to Mars, forecasting the weather 225 million miles away is a milestone toward achieving that end.
After the last few tumultuous years, investment in space exploration may seem like a frivolous pursuit. Still, Dr. Martínez advocates that it is a fundamental scientific field of study that contributes economically to the area and, more generally, to humanity at large. In addition to obvious benefits, like the jobs provided to locals, the research being done by scientists to
land people on Mars will almost certainly improve technology in other industries and the lives of everyday people.
The research completed during the space race resulted in new and improved instruments in the medical field and materials for construction projects. A more obvious contribution is the improvements made to satellites. This led to better GPS and an improved ability to predict and report imminent natural disasters like tsunamis, which Dr. Martínez says saves lives.
When asked what the most unexpected thing he has encountered in his research is, Dr. Martínez says, “That’s a tough question because my research being about Mars means that I am never sure of what I will find.”
Part of what he likes best about his work is incrementally filling in knowledge gaps, but building bridges between the known and the unknown is not something he does in isolation. It is the work of a global community that happens to meet once a year in, of all places, The Woodlands, Texas.
CONTINUED > 51 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/THEWOODLANDS MAY 2023
The 54th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference occurred March 13th -17th at The Woodlands Marriott. Dr. Martínez calls it the most important lunar and planetary science conference in the United States and the world. As space science exploded after the moon landing, the conference played a massive role in gathering and sharing knowledge between scientists from around the globe. This year Dr. Martínez presented on the environmental science data collected by the rover Curiosity during its past ten years on Mars.
The conference being held in the Houston area is no coincidence. The Lunar Sample Laboratory Facility at
Space Center Houston houses the world’s most extensive collection of moon rocks on public display. The samples brought from the moon during Apollo missions served in part as the genesis of the thriving planetary science community we see today. When the time comes, Dr. Martínez says Houston also will be home to the samples brought from Mars.
In true Mar’s weatherman form, Dr. Martínez says his favorite part of Texas is, shockingly, the weather. However, his contributions to pushing the boundaries of human knowledge make him a truth sharer in the past, present, and future of the Texan legacy of space exploration.
“In addition to obvious benefits, like the jobs provided to locals, the research being done by scientists to land people on Mars will almost certainly improve technology in other industries and the lives of everyday people.”

ARCHWAY GALLERY DEBUTS ANNETTE
PALMER’S PANDEMIC PAINTING COLLECTION
“NORTH SEA GULF COAST”
How do we even begin to process our own displacement during the global pandemic? One way is to examine art produced by artists during that pivotal time.
Created during the crucible of the coronavirus, celebrated artist Annette Palmer will give an artist’s talk at the opening reception of her new exhibition North Sea Gulf Coast at 6:30pm on Saturday, June 3rd at Houston’s Archway Gallery.
Like many during the height of Covid19, Palmer, who is Scottish-born but now resides in The Woodlands area, suddenly found herself separated by a lockdown and an ocean from friends and family (some ailing and elderly).
In this new collection of painted works, Palmer explores themes of yearning, distance, and connectivity. While Covid stress-tested reality in ways we had never experienced before, this artist contemplates her feeling of finally being at home in 2 places nearly 5000 miles apart—the common water between her two coastal ports serving as both a connection point and a physical divider.
In her semi-abstract land and seascapes, we glimpse her predilection for the beach towns of Gardenstown in Scotland and Galveston in the United States and ardency for the tempestuous sea that fills the enormous space between them.
“I paint vast open spaces, and am drawn to the energy of the sea,” Palmer explains. “It is the vinculum between land masses separated by thousands

of miles. The ebb and flow of the tide is a rhythm which resets the beat of the heart, the body clock. Its vastness puts everything in perspective. We are small in the universe, yet connected and integral to something much bigger.”
In many of her North Sea Gulf Coast paintings, Palmer incorporates twine and feathers from the respective coastal locations. In others, she adds gilding elements which emit a quiet but profound cheer. With the sea at her center, look for the ethereal otherworldly surprises she gifts us in her water thematic pieces and notice the point of view of these paintings as if one is in the water looking for the horizon line.
When viewing the romantic celestial Dog Star, with its rich earth tones and metal flourishes, I was struck by my own global virus memory of everyone stuck in their own silos while finally having the time to go outside, gaze upward and marvel at the stars which are universal.
“Distance isn’t just physical,” says Palmer. “It’s life and death, it can be lost in time, it can be spiritual.”
Growing up in a creative environment in Falkirk, most of Palmer’s teenage years were spent in the high school art department where she designed and constructed clothing, produced fashion shows and immersed herself in the Edinburgh and Glasgow music scenes. Palmer received her Bachelor of Arts with Honors from Edinburgh College of Art/Heriot Watt University. Upon graduation, she worked as a fashion designer and eventually started her own label in Singapore. Since 2006, Palmer has focused on drawing and painting. In addition to a lengthy international exhibiting history which includes solo shows at Houston’s Jung Center and The Woodlands’ Glade Gallery, she has also showcased her work in Dallas and in Santa Fe art expositions. Her curation work includes art galleries and exhibition spaces including H&H&8 and The St. Luke’s Hospital. Later, she served as the juror for the Sawyer Yards
“Dreamscapes” exhibition and most recently for The Conroe Art League’s International Exhibition.
North Sea Gulf Coast by Annette Palmer at Archway Gallery is not to be missed! It runs through July 5th. For more information visit archwaygallery.com and annettepalmerart.com.

Female Entrepreneurship Grows in The Woodlands
POURING THEIR HEARTS AND SOULS INTO THEIR BUSINESSES AND COMMUNITY
“The Woodlands is a thriving place for women-owned businesses,” Melissa Rouswell says. She and Ali Everhard co-founded the Women’s Council of Entrepreneurs (WCE) in 2018 to support local businesswomen through educational, networking, and inspirational events. WCE has since expanded with chapters throughout the greater Houston area and in San Antonio.
“We are seeing so many new businesses after the pandemic as women pivoted or changed careers,” Melissa says. They join more than 600

women-owned establishments in The Woodlands. “Women are pouring their hearts and souls into their businesses,” she says. “It’s exciting and inspiring!”
As founder and executive director of The Facial Room Society, Kimberly Mason’s mission is to elevate esthetician training while inspiring her students. Her can-do attitude once landed her a job as a supervising Art Director for an award-winning independent film. This experience sparked an interest in makeup and skincare, so Kimberly added not only film credits to her resume but also esthetician. Her accomplishments now include founding The Facial Room Society, an esthetician school teaching facials, waxing, eyelash extensions, makeup, and more advanced skin and body treatments.
Opening in 2019, the accredited school offers full and part-time programs with small classes and individualized instruction. Coursework goes beyond state licensure requirements to provide “the necessary tools to be successful in this competitive field,” Kimberly says. The school is the only one in Texas offering National Esthetician Certification.
There’s always something to do to nurture and expand the business and only 24 hours in a day. Kimberly admits, “I need three of me to get it all done!” Nevertheless, she makes time to help survivors of human trafficking become licensed eyelash technicians. The program is free for them. To help sponsor a student, visit The Facial Room Society’s website.
Passion is a common thread among entrepreneurs. “My passion in life is spreading the love of dance to the next generation of dancers and arts supporters,” Kelly Ann Vitacca says. “When you love your work, you never work a day in your life.”
Kelly Ann founded Vitacca Vocations School for Dance in The Woodlands and Houston. And she launched Vitacca Ballet, a professional contemporary ballet company during the pandemic to help keep Houston dancers employed.
The Vitacca Vocational School for Dance has the unique distinction of being recognized as a Youth America Grand Prix Outstanding School since 2017. It’s the only area school to offer a continuum of training

Kelly Ann’s passion for dance allowed her to thrive in a competitive field, from choreographer to internationally recognized industry professional and entrepreneur. In addition to loving what she does, Kelly Ann attributes her success to hiring wisely and working closely with her staff and faculty.
Kelly Ann believes in sharing her expertise and knowledge with the next generation of female entrepreneurs. She recommends fostering creativity and taking risks. “Keep your chin high even in the most challenging moments, take time to listen to the crowd before answering, and always enter the room with confidence,” she says. “You can do it. I know you can!”
Meet owner Ivette Larralde, operations manager Ana Paula Guerrero, and marketing and events manager Jessica Romero. The trio pour their hearts and souls into Simona’s Bistro, a cozy café with a full bar that opened last December to rave reviews. The women’s attention to detail is obvious throughout — from curated artwork by female artists to Mexican dishes prepared from Ivette’s family recipes and specials made with ingredients from Grogan’s Mill Farmer’s Market.
The name “Simona” means to listen. Ana says they invite people in for great food, fine wine, and conversation. The bistro draws people from different cultures and a steady stream of regulars. “The restaurant owner is here to facilitate the experience — to be a bridge between the food, the staff, the kitchen, and the guest,” Ivette says.
Ivette feels each diner is an ambassador for the restaurant. “Women business owners have an advantage,” she continues, “since our approach is to nurture, to support, and to make people happy.” Mission accomplished, ladies!
