WHY CHOOSE ME?

Let’s make your Earth Day home search more than just a transaction. Together, we’ll find a place you’ll love, and that loves the planet back.

Investment in the Community

In the hustle and bustle of Tempe, there’s an investment that goes beyond dollars and cents—one that creates a lasting impact far greater than anything monetary. It’s the investment in our community and relationships. Tempe thrives on the spirit of connection. From our charming coffee shops to our schools, neighborhood initiatives, and recreation centers, this sense of community is woven into every part of our city.

In 2023, just months before my youngest child was set to graduate high school, I made one of the biggest investments of my life—starting this publication. As I prepared for my soon-to-be “empty nest,” I embarked on a journey that has since given me a front-row seat to Tempe’s incredible community connections. Since launching, I’ve had the privilege of meeting inspiring individuals and groups dedicated to giving back, including the Tempe Diablos, East Valley Women's League, Keep Tempe Beautiful, Aris Foundation, and the Tempe Community Action Agency, to name a few. I’ve also had the pleasure of joining local G.A.I.N. events, For Our City-Tempe breakfasts, and Rotary Club lunches—and I look forward to connecting with even more people who make this community special.

This month, we sat down with Bernard Johnsen, founder and managing partner of Praesidium Law, to learn more about his practice and how he invests in both his clients and the community. Tom and Janné Gutierrez, owners of Always Best Care Senior Services, share insights on navigating healthcare decisions while ensuring a high quality of life for loved ones. Shamrock Roofing owners Cindy Pater and Victor Alecio offer expert advice on protecting one of our most significant investments—our home. Lastly, Carly Schorman, chair of the Women in Business Council, discusses how they are investing in women through mentorship.

Whether we realize it or not, we make investments every day—through our finances, our time, and how we nurture relationships with our loved ones, our community, and ourselves.

We hope you enjoy this issue!

From courtroom litigation to comprehensive estate planning, Johnsen’s unique background helps Arizona families and businesses navigate complex legal challenges with confidence and clarity.

PRAESIDIUM LAW: FROM COURTROOM TO COMMUNITY SERVICE

Friendly, community-driven, and deeply passionate about his work, Johnsen isn’t just another attorney—he’s a trusted advocate for families and businesses navigating complex legal matters.

As the founder and managing attorney of Praesidium Law, PLLC, Johnsen specializes in probate, trust, and business law. With years of experience as a litigator and estate planner, he’s licensed to practice in Arizona and the United States District Court. His legal footprint extends far beyond the East Valley, representing clients across the nation and even overseas. “I’ve appeared in nearly all the Arizona Superior Courts,” Johnsen shares, “and I also represent and advise other attorneys and mediators.”

EXPERTISE ROOTED IN EXPERIENCE

Johnsen’s practice focuses on probate and business litigation, as well as estate and business planning—but what sets him apart is his firsthand experience in the courtroom. “I don’t just draft estate plans in theory—I’ve seen what works and what fails in court,” he explains. His background in litigation gives him a unique advantage in crafting estate plans that hold up over time, ensuring his clients' wishes are honored without legal complications. “I will always look for ways to incorporate my experiences into my estate planning to avoid any future issues for my clients.”

MIDWEST ROOTS, ARIZONA HEART

Originally from Northwest Indiana, Johnsen has called the East Valley home for over 25 years. His dedication to service runs in the family—his father, a retired police officer and detective, now works as a felony prosecutor in Indiana, while his mother spent nearly 30 years working for the Kyrene School District. Despite his Midwest upbringing, Johnsen has fully embraced Arizona. “I love everything about this state—the landscapes, the seasons, and most of all, the people,” he says. Outside of his practice, Johnsen enjoys spending time with his family and supporting his children’s education and extracurricular activities. CONTINUED >

He takes full advantage of Arizona’s diverse landscape, engaging in camping, outdoor adventures, and sports. His commitment to an active lifestyle extends to Spartan races, golfing, bowling, and playing on a recreational softball team—a testament to his belief in the balance between professional and personal fulfillment. While he values his Midwestern upbringing, Johnsen considers Arizona home.

“I WILL ALWAYS LOOK FOR WAYS TO INCORPORATE MY EXPERIENCES INTO MY ESTATE PLANNING TO AVOID ANY FUTURE ISSUES FOR MY CLIENTS.”

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

Beyond his legal work, Johnsen is deeply invested in his community. He serves as an active board member of the Chandler/ Gilbert YMCA, an organization close to his heart. “The YMCA provides a safe, affordable, and positive place for kids to grow, develop character, and have fun in afterschool programs,” he shares. Through donations, fundraising, and volunteering, Johnsen is committed to making a difference in the lives of local children.

WHY ESTATE PLANNING MATTERS

Many people may not realize the importance of estate and business planning until they face a crisis. Johnsen and his team at Praesidium Law work to ensure that individuals and families are protected both during their lifetime and after their passing. “A comprehensive estate plan isn’t just about assets—it’s about protecting your rights while you’re alive and ensuring your loved ones are taken care of after you’re gone.” His goal? To make the process straightforward and stress-free, giving his clients peace of mind for the future.

Always Best Care

BY

Always Best Care helps families evaluate their care options as they navigate aging and health challenges. Since many people are facing this for the first time, education is a priority. Their philosophy is simple—you need to be informed to make an informed decision. Whether a senior requires in-home care or referral services, Always Best Care serves as their Care Manager, maintaining continuous communication, monitoring their condition, and offering guidance throughout their journey.

As a husband-and-wife team with strong community ties and firsthand experience with health challenges like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s in their families, they provide care that truly comes from the heart.

INVESTMENT IN YOUR PEACE OF MIND

“OUR GOAL IS TO EARN TRUST. WHEN FAMILIES TRUST US TO GUIDE AND ADVOCATE FOR THEM, THAT’S WHEN WE CAN OFFER THE BEST SUPPORT.”

CAN YOU SHARE THE STORY BEHIND ALWAYS BEST CARE AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO ENTER THE SENIOR CARE INDUSTRY?

Janné: Caring for others comes naturally to both of us. When our children were young, we frequently visited homebound individuals from our church, organized meals for families experiencing loss or illness, and volunteered with at-risk children. After Tom suffered a stroke at the age of 56, his career abruptly ended. This prompted us to reflect on how we wanted to spend our remaining working years. Watching Tom’s mother care for her father until he passed away at 100, then immediately taking care of her mother-in-law through the end of life, we saw firsthand how stressful being a family caregiver can be. We wanted to make a meaningful impact in our community, and the opportunity to help others navigate this stage of life with greater ease felt truly fulfilling.

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER, AND HOW DO THEY HELP SENIORS MAINTAIN A HIGH QUALITY OF LIFE?

Tom: Our services are designed to enhance the lives of seniors. We provide in-home care services that help seniors age comfortably in their own homes, respite care to give family caregivers essential breaks, and referral or placement services to assist seniors in finding the right independent, assisted, or memory care living arrangements.

Our in-home caregivers offer support with mobility, bathing, grooming, companionship, housekeeping, meals, health monitoring, and more. We've expanded training to include specialized dementia and Parkinson’s care, proudly partnering with the Parkinson’s Foundation as a Community Partner. For referral and placement services, we provide senior living information, guide families through decisions, accompany them on tours, and follow up to ensure the chosen community meets expectations.

DO YOU HAVE A STORY OR TESTIMONIAL THAT SHOWCASES THE IMPACT OF YOUR SERVICES?

Janné: One memorable experience involved Joan and Myron, a couple we assisted for years. Initially, we provided Joan with 12 hours of in-home care per week. As her health declined, our services expanded to seven days a week. Myron, at 92, was caring for his bedridden wife without nearby family support. Seeing his health decline, we encouraged him to consider a 30-day respite placement for Joan. We found a suitable assisted living home near his residence so he could visit daily.

The family continued using our caregiving services to ensure Joan received personalized attention. Eventually, Myron felt reassured enough to take a well-deserved trip to visit his daughter in Oregon. His daughter later shared a touching video of his arrival, which was deeply moving. Supporting their family during different stages of their journey was incredibly rewarding for us.

WHY

IS PROFESSIONAL SENIOR CARE AN IMPORTANT INVESTMENT FOR FAMILIES?

Janné: Aging is unique to each individual, and our agency provides tailored support and advocacy. We adapt to changing needs, offering anywhere from a few hours of in-home care per week to 24/7 care. Our trained caregivers provide flexible solutions while we handle insurance, background checks, credential monitoring, and scheduling, alleviating the burden on families.

WHAT

ARE SOME COMMON CONCERNS FAMILIES HAVE WHEN SEEKING CARE FOR AGING LOVED ONES, AND HOW DO YOU HELP ADDRESS THEM?

Janné: It all comes down to trust. Many seniors fear staying home alone if they feel unsteady or have experienced falls. Others are apprehensive about moving to a “facility.” These concerns are valid. Unfortunately, negative experiences can happen, making seniors feel vulnerable. Our goal is to earn trust. When families trust us to guide and advocate for them, that’s when we can offer the best support.

HOW CAN FAMILIES PREPARE FINANCIALLY AND EMOTIONALLY FOR SENIOR CARE NEEDS?

Tom: Many people are surprised to learn that Medicare does not cover in-home care, supportive services, or assisted living. Financial preparation may involve leveraging paid-off property, retirement accounts, and long-term care insurance policies. Some individuals may qualify for Veterans Affairs benefits or other assistance programs. We partner with community agencies to help locate or liquidate funds, but financing long-term care is a complex topic that requires careful planning.

Preparing for senior care can be emotionally challenging. Many seniors fear losing their independence, but our goal is to help them preserve it. Understanding that support— whether at home or in a senior community—can improve their quality of life is key to embracing this next chapter.

HOW IS ALWAYS BEST CARE INVOLVED IN THE TEMPE COMMUNITY?

Janné: I volunteer at the Dementia-Friendly Tempe Memory Café, where I join other volunteers in dancing and engaging with individuals living with dementia while their family caregivers attend a support group. I'm continually inspired by the love and dedication of these caregivers, who provide daily support with little recognition. I also serve on the AgeFriendly Tempe and Dementia-Friendly Tempe Action Team.

As a Tempe Chamber member, I participated in the Women in Business Mentoring Program during my first year and look forward to returning as a mentor when my schedule allows. Our team also volunteers at events for the Parkinson’s Foundation, Barrow Neurological Institute, and other organizations that support families and raise awareness about senior care challenges. Additionally, we provide educational workshops on various topics affecting seniors.

Shamrock Roofing: Built on Trust

From repairs to replacements, discover how quality roofing protects your most valuable investment.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHANNON LY

Shamrock Roofing was founded in 2008, but like many businesses at the time, it faced challenges due to the recession. By 2010, the company was officially up and running, quickly building a strong reputation in the valley. Over the years, Shamrock Roofing has forged lasting partnerships with real estate professionals and property management companies, while also earning the trust of homeowners. Shamrock Roofing’s co-owners; Cindy Pater and Victor Alecio share the details about their business and tips for homeowners.

WHAT SETS SHAMROCK ROOFING APART?

At Shamrock Roofing, honesty, integrity, and transparency are at the core of everything we do. Customer satisfaction is our top priority, and we approach each project with a commitment to providing honest assessments of the life expectancy of a roof. Whether it’s a repair or a full replacement, we ensure quality workmanship at competitive prices.

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER?

We offer comprehensive services for both homeowners and businesses, including: complimentary roofing and gutter inspections, free annual evaluations (regardless of project size), and repairs ranging from a single tile replacement to full roof replacements

INVESTING IN YOUR ROOF

A well-maintained roof is one of the most valuable investments for homeowners and business owners. Beyond increasing resale value, it serves as the first line of defense against external damage, preventing leaks that could lead to mold growth and health issues.

WHAT ARE SOME SIGNS THAT A ROOF MAY NEED REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT?

Regular roof maintenance is key to avoiding costly repairs. Some signs that indicate it’s time for an inspection or repair include:

• Tile Roofs: Broken or slipped tiles, cracks in mortar caps, and worn-out underlayment (typically lasting 25–30 years in Arizona).

• Shingle Roofs: Loose or missing shingles, as well as heavy granule loss.

• Flat Roofs: Buckling, cracking in rolled roofing, or bubbling and peeling on foam roofs. Addressing these issues early can help prevent water intrusion and structural damage.

WHAT ARE THE BEST ROOFING MATERIALS FOR ARIZONA’S CLIMATE?

Arizona’s extreme heat requires durable roofing materials. We recommend:

• Shingle Roofs: A 30 lb felt paper underlayment to withstand high temperatures.

• Tile Roofs: An SBS 40 lb self-sealing underlayment, which offers superior protection against leaks. A single layer provides a 25–30-year lifespan, while an optional second layer extends it to approximately 40 years.

• Flat Roofs: Foam roofing is the preferred option due to its seamless application, ability to expand and seal gaps, and added insulation benefits.

“Customer satisfaction is our top priority, and we approach each project with a commitment to providing honest assessments about the life expectancy of a roof.”

SHAMROCK'S COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY

Beyond roofing, Shamrock is dedicated to giving back. They’ve contributed to numerous causes, including animal rescues, education initiatives, shelters, and children's hospitals. Additionally, Cindy and Victor support local real estate and property management professionals by sponsoring customer appreciation events, educational drives, veteran-focused golf tournaments, and toy drives for shelters and hospitals.

ROOFING TRENDS TO WATCH IN 2025

While gutters aren’t a new concept, they are becoming increasingly popular among Arizona homeowners. A common misconception is that gutters aren’t necessary due to the state’s low rainfall. However, they play a vital role in protecting a home’s foundation by redirecting water away from walkways and landscaping.

Another growing trend is solar roofing. Solar shingles, a recent innovation, offer a sleeker, lower-profile alternative to traditional panels while blending seamlessly into shingle roofs. The team at Shamrock Roofing stays ahead of industry trends by attending annual roofing conferences to keep up with the latest advancements.

Investing In Women Through Mentorship

WOMEN IN BUSINESS COUNCIL

MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

The Women in Business Council Mentorship Program, offered through the Tempe Chamber of Commerce, empowers business owners and professionals by fostering leadership development through education, meaningful connections, and a deeper understanding of their strengths and leadership styles. We spoke with Women in Business Council (WIB) Chair Carly Schorman to learn more about the program.

CAN YOU SHARE ANY SUCCESS STORIES FROM PAST MENTOR-PROTÉGÉ PAIRS?

Our program has received incredibly positive feedback, with one of its greatest successes being the lasting relationships formed between protégés, mentors, and fellow participants. Having been involved in the program for several years, I still connect with my former protégés over coffee to catch up and discuss new challenges they’re facing as business owners.

HOW LONG DOES THE MENTORING RELATIONSHIP TYPICALLY LAST?

Throughout the six-month program, mentors and protégés build meaningful relationships that often continue well beyond the program itself. In my experience, these connections don’t simply end—they evolve into lasting friendships between peers, extending beyond the traditional mentor-protégé dynamic.

WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT DOES THE CHAMBER PROVIDE TO MENTORS AND PROTÉGÉS DURING THE PROGRAM?

The Chamber supports the program by providing staff assistance, meeting spaces, and connections to esteemed members of the local business community who lead learning sessions and share valuable insights.

They also facilitate business visits, giving protégés first hand exposure to successful companies in Tempe and the opportunity to learn directly from industry leaders about their strategies for growth and success.

HOW HAS THIS PROGRAM CONTRIBUTED TO THE LOCAL BUSINESS COMMUNITY?

This program cultivates well-informed, confident leaders while providing access to a strong professional network in Tempe, creating a lasting impact on local businesses. By supporting business owners and professionals in their personal growth, we directly contribute to the success of the organizations they lead. Fostering connections among local business owners encourages them to seek out community-driven professional services and support, ultimately strengthening the local economy.

WHAT SKILLS OR EXPERIENCES DO MENTORS TYPICALLY BRING TO THE PROGRAM?

Our mentors come from diverse backgrounds, and one of our key goals is to match each protégé with a mentor who has already demonstrated the skills they seek to acquire or achieved success in their field. Every protégé follows a unique path to professional success, and we strive to pair them with a mentor whose guidance aligns with their specific journey.

For example, an aspiring IT professional might be paired with a mentor who owns a business in that industry. A new business owner could be matched with an entrepreneur who understands the challenges of launching a company. We’ve also mentored individuals in the sciences looking to expand their interpersonal skills by pairing them with mentors experienced in human resources or management.

“This program cultivates well-informed, confident leaders while providing access to a strong professional network in Tempe, creating a lasting impact on local businesses.”

WHAT ARE SOME KEY TAKEAWAYS PAST PARTICIPANTS HAVE SHARED?

Within the broader scope of the program, we place a strong emphasis on the individual, tailoring the experience to their specific growth goals—making each mentorship unique. While many participants highlight the value of building strong connections and exploring different leadership approaches, the benefits are ultimately personalized to each protégé.

For example, my expertise is in marketing and content creation, and I’ve worked with protégés looking to strengthen their branding strategies. In my first year as a mentor, I was paired with a protégé focused on improving their marketing practices. This year, I’m working with a holistic practitioner aiming to expand their digital presence through podcasting and social media. In another year, I mentored someone seeking to enhance their daily operations by improving organization and time management skills.

WHAT MAKES AN IDEAL MENTOR OR PROTÉGÉ?

The ideal protégé is anyone eager to grow as a business leader, while the ideal mentor is an experienced professional who has successfully demonstrated the skills a protégé hopes to develop. Since each pairing is unique, the protégé’s goals shape the mentorship experience, making the process highly personalized. This tailored approach is both our goal and what sets us apart from other mentorship programs.

HOW CAN INTERESTED INDIVIDUALS APPLY, AND WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS LIKE?

Interested individuals can apply through the Tempe Chamber of Commerce, where the selection process focuses on matching protégés with mentors whose expertise aligns with their goals. For example, if a protégé wants to expand their entrepreneurial skills as

a restaurateur, we prioritize pairing them with a mentor experienced in hospitality or food services. If no applicants have that specific background, we may explore other Chamber members to fill the niche. In rare cases where a protégé’s desired skill set—such as data analytics—isn’t represented, we discuss alternative learning opportunities within the program to ensure a valuable experience. However, it is uncommon for a protégé to not find a suitable mentor.

WHAT NETWORKING OR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES DOES THE PROGRAM OFFER?

Networking and professional development are at the core of our program. Protégés and mentors engage in meaningful connections with each other, fellow participants, guest speakers, and industry leaders through workshops, mentorship sessions, and company visits. Because networking is a key component of business growth, we ensure ample opportunities for participants to build relationships and expand their professional circles.

Additionally, we offer monthly classes covering a range of topics, from understanding leadership styles to overcoming personal and professional challenges. These sessions also include practical learning modules on subjects like marketing, providing immediate, real-world applications to help participants advance in their careers.

This year's mentors are Dr. Aneesah Nadir, Carly Schorman, Cheri Fisher, Jacqueline McCormack, Julie Immerman, Karri Hill, Lisa Rehurek and Marisol Ruiz. On April 11th, at Embassy Suites by Hilton PhoenixTempe, the Tempe Chamber of Commerce will host the "Women Who Inspire" Leadership Conference to celebrate the achievements of local businesswomen and the graduates from the mentorship program.

Carly Schorman, Chair of the Women in Business Council, shares, “Our mentorship program builds lasting relationships that extend beyond the six months, fostering confident leaders who positively impact their businesses and the local economy.”
