Find Yourself Along The Path

We live in an efficiency and productivity- obsessed age. We fall into that trap sometimes too. The trap of believing the only things worth doing are those for which we can make an exact calculation of time, effort and investment it will cost us. The things that result in the highest level of control and least amount of uncertainty.

But the truth is - that is a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life. We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times, that times that are unstructured and open - ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built.

Road tripping is one of our favorite ways to explore the world around us. Last summer we spent ten days driving up the coast, from Temecula to the coast of Oregon. Several times along the way we got lost, plans changed, reservations were lost ( or never made.... my bad Des ) but through it all we saw the world through eyes that were wide open. Trips like this draw us closer and we get to see, up close and personal, things that others may only see in photographs.

In the last few months, we've been analyzing our relationship with our kids, how our family operates as a unit and what we love spending our time doing. The way we made this more clear, was to focus on the things we don't love spending time on. For our family - its screens. For yours it may be too many busy weeknights away from home, or not enough dinners around the table together. But we noticed that " adventures" and "exploration" don't have to be big and crazy. It can be playing a board game on the patio, walking a new trail, or going out to find a fun cookie place, we've never been to in a different part of town.

Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To book that trip you've been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar.

GRAZING THEORY'S GINA LAMORA SHOWS US HOW IT'S DONE

ARTICLE BY KIM WILDER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SCOTT DOWNING
“I always bring charcuterie...I need to be bougie!”

Grazing Theory’s proprietress, Gina LaMora, is known for her beautiful, high end charcuterie boards and her charming cheese and wine shop at Vail Ranch in South Temecula.  But what many people don’t know is that the married mom of two has a weekend wild side.  And that she has a need…a need for speed.

That need for speed comes in the form of weekend offroad adventures in the family’s Ford Raptor.  The South African-born LaMora, a former civil engineer, enjoys spending weekends with her husband and sons going on high speed off road “Raptor Runs” all over Southern California.

“I first got into off-roading when I married my husband in 2010.  He’s always been into off-roading, had motorcycles, dirt bikes – it was how we were courting each other.  We worked at the same engineering firm together in Virginia and I reached out to him and said, ‘I think my midlife crisis hit me at 28 and I’m buying a motorcycle!’  And he said, ‘let me know if you want to go for a ride.’  And that’s how

we started dating – it’s what we did as a couple before we got married."

And soon after the couple tied the knot, their passion for motorsports took a different turn.  “After we got married, Justin said he wanted to buy a Ford Raptor.  And his whole selling point to me was that we could drive 100 miles an hour over a dry lake bed…but we lived in Virginia and there were no dry lake beds there,” she laughs.  “So we bought a big F-150 Raptor and that was my daily driver.  We took the kids to school in it and our family stuff (happened) in that truck."

The LaMoras relocated to Southern California in 2018 and now spend at least two weekends every month enjoying the outdoors and pursuing their offroad adventures.  “We go to Johnson Valley, Ocotillo and sometimes to Baja,” LaMora says.  “We have friends who always invite us out.  They know we love catering and we love making food so that has become how both our loves have merged.  We typically pack up the truck, get our grill,

"I think everyone should get out in the desert. It's good for people to unplug."
LaMora enjoys driving her Bronco Raptor. "I love the power and ability to go anywhere I choose," she says.

our taco meat and we’ll make food and just enjoy the day as a family.”

“Last year I bought a Ford Bronco Raptor and now I like to take my truck because it is more plush," says LaMora.  "Justin’s Raptor is a little more rugged and loud – he completely stripped and added all the race seats and the roll cages.  If we’re taking the kids out, we usually take my truck – the boys love it!  The whole family gets to go out and have fun."  LaMora wants to encourage more people to try off-roading.  “It’s very empowering for women to drive…and I think everyone should get out in the desert – drive to Joshua Tree, just get out in nature.  It’s good for people to unplug.“

LaMora loves playing  “camp mom” while out in the desert and enjoys planning the menu for everyone, packing lunches for the family and cooking outdoors on the grill at the campsites.  “Mostly filet mignon and shrimp,” she says, “but I also make “potjie,” a South African beef stew.  I make a big pot that can feed 30-40 people!  But I always bring charcuterie too.  I need to be bougie!”

LaMora says that her love for food and feeding people began in her youth.  “I’ve always loved entertaining.  I’m one of 24 grandchildren – big family.  So I was

always the one in the kitchen making food with my grandma, washing the dishes, setting the table, so feeding large groups of people has always been in me," she says.  "We would go to the farm and that’s where we would learn how to feed the animals, how to fix the fence, how to shoot, how to make food from the animal you just shot.  I grew up in a very rustic way in South Africa…and I love that the things I learned as a child apply to my life now.”

ON GRAZING THEORY & PAYING IT FORWARD

"One of the things I’m very proud of with Grazing Theory is that we have given new businesses a platform to announce themselves to the community," LaMora says.  "It’s kind of like a paying it forward.  Since I’ve received so much help in my life, now I have the opportunity to help other people.  We have 13 local companies that we represent in our store – from Mrs. G’s Jellies, Famous PUDN, a local honey maker, a cookie baker and some local wine makers.  It’s nice to cheer people on because that little bit of encouragement can make or break a local business owner, especially when they are just starting out."

VINE TO GLASS

Hidden Gems of Temecula Valley: Vitagliano Vineyards + Winery. Italian inspired winery brings endless possibilities with incredible views and fresh farm-to-table meals and wine.

Today, nearly 50 wineries make up the vibrant and growing Temecula Wine Country, each situated within its own unique landscape. Among many individual distinguishing features, what primarily sets wineries apart is each one's singular blend of flavors and the deep passion that it's owners

and winemakers infuse into their craft. Vitagliano Vineyards & Winery is one such example. With an unwavering dedication to excellence, Vitagliano Vineyards strives to create an inviting and memorable experience for all who visit. The commitment to quality and the heartfelt enthusiasm of the team at Vitagliano make it a "must visit" destination in Temecula's vibrant winery scene.

Well before Vitagliano Winery & Vineyards was born, the property was home to Lake Oak Meadows, a popular and often fully booked wedding and event venue, which is still thriving in the heart of the winery estate. According to Jennifer Jeremiason, Vitagliano's Event/Sales Manager, “Owners Frank

and Lisa Aglio designed the area (a horse ranch at the time of purchase) specifically as a wedding venue. And then about five years ago, we implemented the winery.”

Located off Glen Oaks Road, almost midway between Rancho California Road and Anza Road, the 10 acre property enjoys a picturesque setting with stunning wine country views and its own private lake. With grounds that are lush, well-manicured and feature a profusion of flowers, it’s no surprise that this top rated event destination is a go-to spot for that picture perfect social media share. The Aglio's mandate to cultivate a gorgeous aesthetic tailor made for photography is evident

in every detail, including a regrade to the parking area to ensure that there is a clear view of the entire venue. Vitagliano's three separate event spaces have hosted weddings, charity galas, holiday parties, car shows, community events and other private events of 300 guests or more.

Jeremiason says that although the winery is a newer addition, the owners have truly embraced the joy that it brings to clients. "They enjoy the people and the atmosphere that it's brought to the property," she said.

As for the wine, many of the grapes are grown on the property. Grapes are also sourced from other local spots such as De Luz, making many of their offerings true Temecula wine. Among the Italian varietals grown are Dolcetto, Cabernet Sauvignon, Primitivo, Pinot Grigio and Muscat Canelli. Vitagliano Vineyards & Winery are proud to offer some of the region's finest Super Tuscan varietals.

A few new projects are in the works to expand their wine club offerings, including new members-only lounge areas, as well as a new pool deck renovation with a "Margaritaville feel" that will also be available for members to enjoy.

Vitagliano also offers food items to pair with their wines - the entire menu is made fresh from scratch daily and aims to bring the farm-to-table vibe to everything they serve in the bistro.

Another new addition to the winery is their Friday barbecue nights from 5-9pm. This was born of the owners love of ranch and equestrian life, and highlights of

"We take great pride in our bistro, in our food being farm-to-table. Everything is made fresh from the seed crackers to the focaccia bread to all sauces."

this event include delicious barbecue, live music and free line dancing. Open until 9pm on Friday and Saturday nights, Vitagliano is one of the few wineries that is open late to serve the community. They also regularly offer live music.

Jeremiason says her favorite part of working at the winery is experiencing its sheer beauty. "The pure elegance when you walk in- it's just breathtaking." And people seem to agree... many of whom come regularly to relax, read a book or a magazine.

"There is also a warm, casual family feeling to the winery," Jeremiason says, " and many of the staff have been a part of the winery from

the beginning." And the Aglios like it that way. "It's not uncommon to see owners mingling with the crowd, hanging out listening to live music and then hopping behind the bar to help out", she says.

Vitagliano Vineyards & Winery is open six days a week. They are closed Tuesdays.

TVBWFCELEBR ATES41STYEAR

There is nothing more emblematic of the Temecula Valley than the sight of colorful hot air balloons soaring peacefully over the beautiful, rolling hills of wine country. And the popular event that combines the Valley's love of both is the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival. In its 41st year, this multi-day event highlighting balloons and local food/drink paired with internationally known bands and live music, continuously draws crowds from Temecula and all around Southern California and beyond.

The origins of the festival date back to 1983 (then called the Rancho California Balloon and Wine Festival) and was the brainchild of commercial airline pilot and avid balloonist Walt Darran and Evelyn Harker, a veteran event organizer and fundraiser. Darran's interest was in showcasing the balloons, while Harker wanted to add more appeal by highlighting some of the area’s other natural attractions such as wine tasting and entertainment. At the time of the first festival in 1984, there were only six wineries in the region and the

The iconic Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival celebrated by highlighting local vendors and balloons along with top tier musicians.

Tethered balloon rides were also offered to attendees.

event launched 35 balloons. Of the 9,000 residents in the area, more than 4,000 people were in attendance and it was considered a monumental success.

In subsequent years, the festival continued to be one of the biggest and most popular events in the Valley. Originally held at Rancho California Plaza, the festival was relocated several times as it grew in size and popularity. It has found a more permanent home at Lake Skinner since 1989, as the location allows attendees ample parking space and the ability to camp for the weekend.

In 1991, the Temecula Chamber of Commerce turned over production of the event to the newly formed Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival Association. The mission statement of this new nonprofit organization was, and still is, to enhance the charitable, cultural, educational and economic development of the region.

As a way to give back, the Festival Association returns proceeds to community organizations including the 4-H Club, Boy Scouts, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Riverside County, Rotary Club, Temecula Valley Art League and Temecula Valley Wine Society, as well as to many local sports teams.

While the theme of hot air balloons and wine has always been the mainstays of the event, each year new attractions and vendors are introduced to an ever-growing crowd.

This year, the three-day event was headlined by rock legends Stone Temple Pilots, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and George Thorogood & the Destroyers, Casino Pauma sponsoring the main stage. While the balloons and wine certainly continue to draw crowds, for many, the music has become the key attraction to the festival. Over the years, big name acts such as The Beach Boys, Blake Shelton, Daughtry, Kenny Loggins and Third Eye

Balloons were launched early on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Blind have been headlined. For many, the music aspect of the festival has become a favorite and the announcement of each next festival's lineup is always hotly anticipated.

Food trucks and tents lined the festival area. Attendees were able to visit vendor booths from local area businesses selling everything from trucker hats to jewelry. For the foodies, there was no shortage of delicious offerings from local staples like Famous Pudn and Unforgettable Cravings. True to the “wine” aspect of the event title, many of Temecula’s wineries such as Akash, Altisima, Vitagliano, Halter Ranch and Peltzer Winery were on site pouring tastings of their best vintages. Several local breweries, including 8 Bit Brewing, served their suds in the Beer Garden.

According to Visit Temecula Valley, "the heartbeat of the festival lies in the majestic ascension of hot air balloons against the canvas of the Temecula sky" which took place at sunrise each day. Not so early risers could enjoy the festival's popular Balloon Glow on Friday and Saturday nights. For those slightly less thrill seeking, the festival also offered a tethered balloon launch on the same mornings.

Over the years, the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival has become an immersive, experiential celebration of the lifestyle, flavor and community that thrives in this area. Temecula Mayor James "Stew" Stewart, who attended this year, had glowing reviews. "The bands this year were really great. If you look at the price of admission as a concert ticket that includes multiple bands, it is a great value. I really think it should be renamed the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Music Festival!", he raved.

CHASING THE

The Iconic "Silver Bullet" Cements Its Status as One of the Most Loved & Recognized Brands in the World

When entrepreneur and outdoor enthusiast Wally Byam came up with the design for a small, lightweight travel trailer, it was primarily a means of getting his wife - who refused to sleep on the ground in a tent – to better enjoy their camping excursions.  That travel trailer that he built in the late 1920s to satisfy his wife’s desire to “glamp,”  would set the stage for Byam to found Airstream in 1931, giving birth to a new era of comfortable, elegant, and stylish outdoor travel for couples and families all over the world.

Byam’s quest to create comfortable travel likely started in his youth.  He was born in 1896 in Baker City, a boomtown along the Oregon Trail.  As a kid he spent time working with his grandfather on a sheep farm where he lived in a wooden cart pulled by a mule.  He spent his formative years in the outdoors away from the big city, where he developed a lifelong love of exploring wide open spaces.  After college, he moved to Los Angeles and went into the magazine publishing business.

Armed with nothing but his degree from Stanford, a deep love of the outdoors and a burning desire to get his wife out on the road with him, Byam built his first trailer in 1929.  It was made primarily of plywood and featured a rigid tear drop shaped design set on top of a Model T chassis.  They hooked it up to the back of their Dodge and set out to conquer the road.  During his travels, Byam noticed a growing interest in trailers and decided to take out an ad in Popular Mechanics to offer building plans for his design for $5 a piece.  The plans sold well but there was more demand for building sets to go along with the plans as well as increasing requests for ready built trailers.

Seeing a growing interest and business opportunity, Byam began building trailers in his backyard.  Orders were steady and he was able to survive the financial crash of ‘29 by building and selling an ever increasing number of trailers.

Byam opened the first Airstream factory in Culver City, Calif. In 1931 and dedicated himself and the company to building lightweight travel trailers that were easy to tow, made of high quality materials and built with outstanding craftsmanship.  Byam named his invention the Airstream because he was fond of saying that they rode as smoothly “as a stream of air.”  By 1932, he’d sold 1000 units and in 1936 Airstream debuted the Clipper model which for the first time featured a riveted aluminum frame that mimicked the sleek, aerodynamic shape of Pan Am’s then famous China Clipper airplane.  Cleverly capitalizing upon the glamor and excitement of the aviation era, the sleek, now iconic “silver bullet” travel trailer design was born.  Pricing began at $1200 and boasted room for four to dine and sleep in unparalleled mobile luxury.  Soon his factory had a staff of 75 working 18 hours a day to meet the demand for Byam’s “airplane without wings” and units were even sold to Hollywood stars and the President of Mexico.

During World War II, aluminum became hard to come by due to its use in the aircraft industry and Byam closed the original Airstream factory and went to work for airplane manufacturer Curtis Wright.  Armed with the latest knowledge in aircraft technology, Byam

opened a new factory in downtown Los Angeles in 1947 and started the first of the now famous international Airstream caravans in 1951 with a group caravan tour to Mexico and Central America.

Eager to expand to the East Coast, Byam opened a second factory in Jackson Center, Ohio, in 1952 to continue selling luxurious trailers and building his brand based on a culture of using only high quality materials and workmanship.  To this point, Byam was quoted as saying that “Airstreams are handcrafted, not handmade” and that “Conversation is cheap, and Airstream is not.”

The 1950s and 1960s were a heyday for Airstream and saw the first redesign of the trailer in 30 years that included an internal facelift as well as both exterior and as structural changes that further enhanced the recognizable silver bullet shape by adding a foot in length and four inches in width.  The company also introduced the first self contained trailer, the International, which no longer required the use of external hook ups, and its smallest self contained trailer, the Bambi, that is still produced today.  Other notable models produced during this time were the Land Yacht, Pacer, Caravel, Globe Trotter, Tradewind, Flying Cloud and Overlander.

Byam died in 1962 and Airstream suffered a few setbacks and financial hardships the following decade due to the soaring price of gasoline and the ensuing fuel crisis.  The company had fallen into debt of $12 million and was acquired by businessmen Wade Thompson and Peter Orthwein, who later founded Thor Industries, now the world’s largest manufacturer of recreational vehicles.  Thompson and Orthwein (whose first two initials of their last names combine to form “Thor”) turned the struggling Airstream around and were able to generate $1 million in profit after only one year at the helm.

Today, Airstream celebrates 93 years of operation and as such, is now the longest-tenured recreational vehicle manufacturer in the world and is admired and collected by thousands of devotees around the globe.  Says Gary Akin, Airstream’s Director of the Western

Region, “The idea of traveling is core to our brand.

Our founder’s vision for Airstream and our current vision for Airstream is that it is to be a tool to go see the country, and see the world.”  And see the world, they do.  Airstream owners have been caravanning on nearly every continent for decades and because of their solid construction and quality materials, numerous vintage Airstream models are still on the road.

“Many people don’t realize that it’s not unusual to see 40- or 50-year-old Airstreams in the service shops at their local dealership.  That simply doesn’t happen with other RV brands.”

Founder Byam was often fond of saying, “Don’t just make changes, make improvements,” and the company’s recent designer collabs are a perfect example.  “We’re always looking for associations that fit our brand and fit our clientele,” Akin says.  “Over the years, we’ve done collaborations with Pendleton, Tommy Bahama, Pottery Barn and REI.  Akin admits that the company is at work on future collaborations, but is tight lipped about details. When asked about what the company plans for the future, he points to the newest model.  “The new Trade Wind model that we introduced last year has now become our most popular.  Electrification is the trend right now – people want to go off the grid,” he says about the model that has the largest battery bank, inverter and solar power in Airstream’s history.   And why, after 93 years, is Airstream still so popular?  Akin believes it’s the legions of loyal Airstream devotees.  “Our customers appreciate the quality, the durability and Airstream’s timeless design that evolves every year.”

For low-maintenance hair care while camping, try R&CO's Spiritualized Dry Mist. It's micellar formula cleanses without residue, removes build up, soothes dry scalps, and refreshes hair.

After your adventure, detox and repair with R&CO's Teacup Light Conditioning Rinse. It removes pollutants and nourishes dry strands. Follow with On Cloud Baobab Oil Repair Masque for deep hydration.
