OLD WORLD CHRISTMAS

“Christmas is one of the most cherished holidays in our home." said Lauren Fried of LF Interiors." I want my kids to remember the magic and excitement as we prepare for the celebration of Jesus’s birth. To me, Christmas is a feeling of love and renewed hope and I want my decor to reflect that feeling. Each piece of

decor, from the tree topper to the stockings, often carries memories and traditions that my children will hold dear.”

Lauren Fried of LF Interiors, presents an enchanting “Old World Christmas,” an arrangement that blends rustic charm with timeless elegance. This design shines through its use of natural materials, vintage ornaments, and a carefully selected palette of rich yet muted colors. Layered with various textiles, the arrangement is a harmonious blend of old and new, creating a look that stands out from the traditional red and green holiday decor. This combination of textures and colors evoke a sense of warmth and nostalgia, perfect for those seeking a sophisticated yet cozy holiday ambiance.

Many of Fried’s clients come to her specifically for this refined, rustic aesthetic. Neutral tones and a sense of calmness take center stage, steering clear of the brighter, bolder colors that many associate with

holiday decorations. According to Fried, holiday decor should be an extension of the home's existing style, creating a cohesive, lived-in feel that enhances rather than disrupts. She notes that the "Old World Christmas" design she could easily fit into any of her clients' homes, offering a timeless look that brings comfort and elegance to the space.

"The goal is to evoke warmth and nostalgia through the design," Fried explains. "It should feel elegant but also lived-in, like it belongs in the home and isn't just a seasonal afterthought."

For Fried, holiday decor is a significant consideration in the overall design of a home, particularly for her full-service clients. “When working with full-service clients on new construction or whole-home remodels,” she adds with a laugh, “we always factor in where the Christmas tree will go.” This attention to detail ensures that every aspect of the home, including seasonal decor, works seamlessly with the overall

design. LF Interiors offers a full range of services, assisting clients in both purchasing and styling holiday decor for a cohesive, custom look that aligns with their existing interiors.

LF Interiors stays ahead of the curve when it comes to sourcing unique holiday decor. Fried and her team regularly attend markets and trade shows nationwide, selecting seasonal decor that matches their clients' refined tastes. For those looking to shop on their own, Fried recommends online platforms like Etsy, where one can find one-of-a-kind wrapping paper, ribbons and vintage pieces that prevent the home from feeling too commercialized, like the inside of a Hobby Lobby. Other recommended sources include McGee & Co., Lulu and Georgia, and Afloral.

For those wanting to attempt this arrangement on their own, consider establishing a color palette. Choose hues that complement the home’s existing tones. Mix in patterns, such as florals, stripes, or solids. Include ribbons of a velvet, satin, or twine variety. Heirloom details, be it wax stamps, vintage ornaments, or hand-knit stockings will add to the scene. Lastly, layer with dried fruits, metal, and glass elements for a truly authentic look.

“No matter how you choose to decorate your home, choose high quality, meaningful pieces that you will cherish for years to come,” Fried advises.

SYMPHONY ALL'APERTO

ENCHANTING NIGHT IN THE GARDEN

AT VIENZA'S GIARDINO DEL CIELO

The Temecula Valley Symphony has long been a cultural cornerstone of the community made up of countless professional musicians who bring their artistry and passion to the region. Their recent collaboration with Europa Village Wineries resulted in an unforgettable performance held at Europa's stunning new garden venue, Giardino. Beneath a starry sky, the symphony delivered a night of exceptional music, offering visitors a chance to experience live orchestral music in an intimate outdoor setting.

For ten years, the symphony has been under the baton of John Mario Di Costanzo, an esteemed conductor that has toured with opera companies across the United States and abroad. Before his life in southern California, he was an Italian language coach who lived in New York City. Once, he was the Music Director of Tri-Cities Opera and Principal Conductor for Jackie Evancho’s orchestral tours. His time is now divided between conducting the Temecula Valley Symphony, conducting Rancho Mirage’s Coachella Symphony, and teaching piano to his students. Additionally, he is in the process of writing an original symphony of his own.

Europa Village Wineries’ visionary founder, Dan Stephenson, has been married to Beverly Stephenson for 32 years. Beverly founded Fine Arts Network Theater Company in 1994, and Temecula Theater Foundation in 1998, which raised money to build the Old Town Temecula Theater. The current property that is now known as Europa Village Winery was originally part of the Callaway Winery property. The establishment sold off 350 acres that the Stephensons purchased in 2007. Their European travels, and love of French, Italian and Spanish wines inspired Europa’s conception. The two envisioned bringing old-world charm, rich cultural experiences, and the tastes of France, Spain, and Italy to Temecula.

CONTINUED >

“Part of bringing the European experience to Temecula was bringing the culture, the music, the language, the architecture and the cuisine,” said Beverly. “From the beginning we have incorporated these concepts into the fabric of Europa.” The winery has held operas in the cave at “C’est la Vie,” featured shows from Shakespeare In The Vines, and plays music that reflects European countries through the sound speakers.

Completion of Europa’s semi-amphitheater garden space, “Cielo di Giardino,” allowed Dan and Beverly the opportunity to expand their cultural offerings. They approached the symphony with a vision to make something that reflected European music, the first foray into the types of cultural offerings they wish to present. Di Costanzo claimed that the venue afforded the symphony a picturesque and remarkable setting in the open air. Hence the concert’s name “All’aperto,” which means out in the open, or in the open air.

“There is such a vast variety of music written for orchestra that it was easy to offer a program of extreme contrasts,” said Di Costanzo. Such a range of music included “The Italian Symphony” by Mendelssohn, “Mission Impossible,” “Moon River,” “The Godfather Theme,” and “A Hungarian Rhapsody.” The final number “Bolero” was equally fitting, considering Europa's restaurant and tasting room of the same name. They had a full orchestra play, with between 50 to 60 players. The turnout was massively successful, and the capacity for both general admission and dinner was 600. Their magical concert was a sold out show. The Stephensons were left extraordinarily excited about the outcome, believing that Di Costanzo created a program that was culturally on brand, approachable to the listening palate and left guests wanting more.

“What makes Temecula Valley Symphony stand out is the fact that in a relatively small community, we have so many fabulous musicians that have made Temecula their home. Access to firstclass musicians is the reason it continues to grow and thrive. We at Europa are excited to be part of their journey,” Beverly praised. Temecula Valley Symphony’s next concert, “Dances from the Nutcracker Suite,” is planned for Dec. 15, at the Golden Bears Theater. Visit https://temeculavalleysymphony.org/ for more information.

Europa Village is also featuring their annual performance of The Nutcracker Ballet en Suite on Dec. 6,7, and 8. Options range from the inclusion of dinner with the show, or just the show itself. On Dec. 15, the winery will be hosting a Christmas tea, with seasonal music performed by Southwest Women’s Chorus, with two performances occurring that Sunday. The following Sunday, on Dec. 22, the Temecula Valley Master Chorale will be hosting their annual Christmas concert at Europa. Finally, Europa will have a Christmas Eve dinner, and a James Bond themed New Year’s Eve party. Beverly promises an abundance of holiday spirit within the coming months, as even seeing the lights will be a worthwhile time in itself.

SOLAR IS CONSTRUCTION

What It’s Like To Own A Solar Installation Company In California

What It’s Like to Own a Solar Installation Company in California

It’s Friday night, and I'm out on a date with my wife. I've swapped my work shirt with the company logo for something more casual, but I know the inevitable will happen. We're social, so before long, we're chatting with another couple. The small talk begins: “How was your dinner?” “Do you live nearby?”

“Do you think it will ever cool off this year?” But then comes the question I know is coming: “What do you do for work?”

Why does this question fill me with anxiety? Well, let me turn it around: when you think of a solar company, what comes to mind? Is it someone knocking on your door at an inconvenient time? Maybe an a

dinner-interrupting call or an ad that feels like a scam: “Call now, Free Solar!” These are common impressions, and exactly why I don't always look forward to explaining my career. I entered the solar industry over 15 years ago, and the changes have been staggering. I started on the East Coast, eventually moved West, and went from employee to business owner. My motivation for owning a solar company was to fill a gap I felt existed. Solar companies used to be local, reputation-driven, and customer-focused. Unfortunately, that mentality has mostly disappeared, replaced by a focus on rapid growth and profit over quality. My goal has always been to bring those values back for people who want to reduce their electric bills.

So, does New Day Solar do the things that come to mind when you think of a solar company? No. Absolutely not. My mission is to change the customer experience when considering adding solar to their home. This approach sometimes comes at the expense of growth, but it's intentional. Many solar companies reply on aggressive, sometimes unethical methods because solar can be highly lucrative. They just need to show you the savings. While I don't agree with their methods, I do believe that solar is a smart decision for most Californians. Eventually, the conversation reaches that moment. “What do you do for work?” I answer, and I can see them bracing for a sales pitch. I ease the tension with a joke, acknowledging the industry's faults. I confirm their concerns about some solar companies and suggest they take their time before making a decision. The tension lifts, and they finally ask, “So does solar really make sense?” “Yes. Absolutely,” I reply.

Choosing solar is often one of the most financially rewarding decisions a homeowner can make. Solar's return on investment usually exceeds traditional investments. So why do so many people have bad experiences with it? That's what I love about my job-- helping people understand that solar is construction. There's no switch to flip; it requires design, custom solutions, slow permitting, financing options, and a company you can trust to honor their warranties.

That's why choosing the right company is crucial. It's the most important decision you'll make in the solar process.  Despite the industry's reputation, there are good companies out there.  I wish you luck in your pursuit of lower electric bills and independence from your utility company, and I look forward to hearing from you!

HOLIDAY TRADITIONS

HOW OUR TEAM CELEBRATES THE SEASON

At Temecula City Lifestyle , we believe the magic of the holidays lies in cherished traditions with family and friends. Here’s a glimpse into how our team celebrates:

For Des, the season kicks off with a holiday playlist and a festive manipedi. “I love to keep things simple but festive,” she says, adding that a swipe of red lip gloss is her go-to holiday touch. One of her favorite traditions is visiting WinterHaven in Tucson, Arizona, her hometown. Enjoying the lights, hot cocoa, and Christmas carols. "I sing Christmas music all season long," she shares. Decorating gingerbread houses is another nostalgic favorite!

At Temecula City Lifestyle, we believe the magic of the holidays lies in cherished traditions shared  with family and friends.

Sean’s traditions blend with his December birthday. “My parents made sure our tree was up before my birthday every year so it wouldn't get lost in the holiday shuffle,” he recalls. His family placed only his birthday gifts under the tree, a special touch he cherishes. With his own kids, Christmas morning begins with making Abelskievers—Danish pancake balls topped with powdered sugar and raspberry preserves. "It reminds me of when the kids were little," he recalls. “Waking up early with all the joy in their eyes—it’s something I’ll never stop doing.”

For Scott, the holidays start with an annual tradition of creating an unique family Christmas card. " We have so much fun fine-tuning our idea before the holidays hit," he says. Christmas Eve is spent at Mass, followed by a big family gathering, and on Christmas morning, the smell of chilaquiles fills the house as gifts are opened and gratitude is shared. When our kids were still "kids", our first launch to the season was picking and tagging our Christmas Tree at Peltzer Tree Farm in OC. Our traditions would continue after Christmas with our annual Mammoth ski trip where we often embraced blizzard conditions and made the most of what time we could get on the slopes. Time is a precious gift and reminiscing about these precious memories just punctates the importance of continuing to carve out as many priceless moments together as we can.

>

Ava sees December as untouched purity, one that she looks forward to each year. "Christmas is defined by the stories people share, in dance, in song, and in animation," she says. Watching festive tales, that brought joy in her childhood. From Rankin Bass specials, the Nutcracker Ballet, Scrooge's journey from a miser to a charitable fellow, and many more. Nothing beats listening to vintage Christmas music and rewatching films with family. It becomes even more jovial when paired with hearty meals, comfortable pajamas, and a crackling fire.

Shawna says, “Every year, Christmas and the holidays become more special. My tradition is tuning in to the holiday radio channel and listening to the grand collection of Christmas music across the entirety of December. Nat King Cole’s ‘The Christmas Song’ is greatly nostalgic, reminding me of childhood memories with family members who have since passed on. Other meaningful traditions include enjoying a holiday feast, and unwrapping gifts Christmas morning. Though, the most important thing is being with my children, family, pets, and friends—new and old. Cheers to another blessed year!

BACKSTAGE @ THE NUTCRACKER

MARK ERICKSON'S CAPTIVATING TAKE ON THE CLASSIC BALLET RETURNS

Revered as one of Southern California’s best versions of the beloved ballet, The Ballet Studio returns this holiday season with its captivating performance of The Nutcracker. Directed by Mark Erickson and presented by The Ballet Studio and Norris Performing Arts Center in collaboration with Fine Arts Network Theater Company, the show has been a holiday tradition in Old Town Temecula since 2005. It tells the timeless tale of a girl, a magician, a rat king, and a prince-- a perfect family outing for the holiday season.

Mark Erickson's connection to The Nutcracker began during his childhood when he first heard a recording of Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker Suite”. He recalls listening to the music during long winters when the snow fell heavily outside. Later in life, as a professional ballet dancer, he participated in countless Nutcracker performances. However, Erickson always felt that something was missing from the

traditional show-- a deeper sense of drama and plot. While performing in the original run of Andrew Lloyd Webber's “The Phantom of the Opera.” in the 90's, he began wondering if he could rewrite “The Nutcracker” to add elements he felt it lacked.

When he opened The Ballet Studio in 2005, Erickson seized the opportunity to reshape the ballet. His version includes three leading characters--- Clara-Marie, Drosselmeyer, and Drosselmeyer's assistant -- whose relationships are intended to fluctuate over the course of the ballet. Four minutes have been added to the battle scene, a nightmare turned fantasy as Clara-Marie finds the courage to overcome her fears and defend her hero.

Their opening toy shop scene paints a discordant image to excerpts from Igor Stravinsky’s “The Right of Spring.” Erickson believed that the use of such music elevated the levels of tension, while also setting up the rest of the ballet. It foreshadows what's to follow. Their battle sequence also incorporates music not from the original score, more specifically Tchaikovsky's “Symphony No. 6.” Erickson’s joy doubled upon realizing the similarities between the tracks, and what it could offer in terms of creating drama. He explains that the battle sequence they put on the stage is not fun and games, but rather, takes on a life of its own. Making Spirits

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com
