Taming the Lion of March

arch: it just isn't what it used to be. We remember the saying that "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb." Maybe climate change has had a calming effect on what seemed to be the problem child of the calendar; these days, it seems more like "It might snow in March but more likely we can expect a continuation of mild winter temperatures, flat light and a slow, gradual build-up to spring." Don't get me wrong; we need March. It's the month when things start to evolve from the dormancy of winter to the glories of spring. Something else that's evolving is downtown Long Grove. Hit as hard as anyplace after the Great Recession, the historic area is perking up with a new vibrancy. Writer Jody Grimaldi reveals where Long Grove has been and where it's headed. Toward the end of March has been the traditional week around SW Lake to take Spring Break. Not sure where to head on vacation? Sue Shimkus, Lake Zurich Travel & Cruise, returns with an alluring look at Scotland. Maybe you're considering heading somewhere on vacation by car. Mark Wolfe from Wauconda's venerable John's Complete Auto Service (founded in 1978) will make sure your wheels are Road Warrior ready. If you have a teen driver in your family, Patricia Pipkin, an Allstate agent, has some timely advice to help our newest drivers stay safe on the road. Finally, we are in the closing days of the Best of SW Lake Awards campaign. If you haven't yet voted, go to www.bestofswlakeawards.com to vote for your favorites. The list of companies nominated by our readers is amazing. We're fortunate to be surrounded by such a wealth of talent. Voting ends March 15. Thanks, and we’ll see you around town.
