M
arch: it just isn't what it used to be. We remember the saying that "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb." Maybe climate change has had a calming effect on what seemed to be the problem child of the calendar; these days, it seems more like "It might snow in March but more likely we can expect a continuation of mild winter temperatures, flat light and a slow, gradual build-up to spring." Don't get me wrong; we need March. It's the month when things start to evolve from the dormancy of winter to the glories of spring. Something else that's evolving is downtown Long Grove. Hit as hard as anyplace after the Great Recession, the historic area is perking up with a new vibrancy. Writer Jody Grimaldi reveals where Long Grove has been and where it's headed. Toward the end of March has been the traditional week around SW Lake to take Spring Break. Not sure where to head on vacation? Sue Shimkus, Lake Zurich Travel & Cruise, returns with an alluring look at Scotland. Maybe you're considering heading somewhere on vacation by car. Mark Wolfe from Wauconda's venerable John's Complete Auto Service (founded in 1978) will make sure your wheels are Road Warrior ready. If you have a teen driver in your family, Patricia Pipkin, an Allstate agent, has some timely advice to help our newest drivers stay safe on the road. Finally, we are in the closing days of the Best of SW Lake Awards campaign. If you haven't yet voted, go to www.bestofswlakeawards.com to vote for your favorites. The list of companies nominated by our readers is amazing. We're fortunate to be surrounded by such a wealth of talent. Voting ends March 15. Thanks, and we’ll see you around town.

THE BODY IS A TEAM PLAYER DR. STEPHEN RIVARD PUTS THE SPRING BACK IN PATIENTS' STEPS
I
t almost sounds like an urban legend when Dr. Stephen Rivard casually men-
tions a 96-year-old woman who had repeatedly driven 40 miles several times a year over a 13-year quest to heal a painful, open leg wound. Upon being referred to him, Rivard, who runs Illinois Vein Specialists in Lake Barrington, treated the patient, completely healing her leg wound in a mere three months. She didn’t require surgery. She was completely healed. Whereas some wound healing clinics focus on treating a painful wound at a surface level, Rivard focused on the underlying condition that caused the wound: venous insufficiency. Lest you think Rivard is a braggart or throwing wound clinics (which help millions of people annually) under the bus, he’s not. He’s merely trying to explain the benefits that vein treatment can provide to those who may not know that venous insufficiency can be easily treated without surgery, and is often covered by insurance. According to Rivard, when the circulatory system is not working well, the entire body can suffer.

WHAT IS BOARD CERTIFICATION?
Board Certification is a credential that many often understandably confuse with licensing. Licensing and board certification are completely different processes. Physicians must become licensed to practice medicine in the U.S., but not all physicians are board certified. Board certifications are rigorous, optional, highly specialized educational programs that require testing, peer evaluation and ongoing medical education. Not every physician is board certified or has passed board certification exams. Physicians who have been board certified, such as Dr. Stephen Rivard from Illinois Vein Specialists, have met rigorous criteria in their board-certified specialty.
Dr. Susan Kanehan, also practicing with Illinois Vein Specialists, consults with Rivard.

Discovering Castles

Edinburgh Castle
S
cottish Castles have long been associated with romance and excitement, and the green fields of Scotland are rife with them. From the Highlands to Dumfries and Galloway, they range from relics of the 12th century to fine stately homes designed by great 18th century architects, each making you feel that you have stepped right into a fairytale. These magnificent icons are reminders of dynasties past, when mighty lords of the Middle Ages resided in fortresses of stone. Explore them throughout the Scottish landscape and discover their legends, their
beauty and charm, and possibly encounter a ghost of a Scottish maiden, pacing the halls in search of a lost prince. Cawdor Castle is a mythic fortress forever linked to the name Macbeth (even though the real Macbeth lived about 350 years earlier). Located near Inverness in the eastern heart of the Highlands, Cawdor was built in late 14th century as a private fortress. Once you cross the drawbridge, you'll find a very intimate atmosphere full of antique furniture, fine portraits and tapestries, all arranged by the Cawdor family who still resides there. The castle is fortunate to have
three gardens, including the Walled Garden and an intricate holly maze. Edinburgh Castle is the most visited monument in Scotland, and with good reason. Standing tall on a wide expanse of volcanic rock, the castle dominates the sprawling capital city beneath it. Built, battered, and besieged over 900 years, the castle endearingly is the preeminent symbol of Scottish loyalty, and provides a dazzling view of the city. At one o'clock daily a cannon fires to mark the exact time. Far away from the city lights, Eilean Donan Castle in the middle of serene Loch Duich is one of the most photogenic of all Scottish castles, and is particularly striking when illuminated at night. The first walls were erected between the 6th and 7th centuries, yet the current castle wasn't completed until 1932. Stirling Castle in central Scotland is another that appears as if conceived from a dream. Overlooking two of the country's most historic battlefields, Stirling Bridge and Bannockburn, the castle's location rivals even Edinburgh Castle's for sheer magnificence as it sits high on volcanic rock, visible for many miles in every direction. Historically significant and visually astonishing, the castles of Scotland are landmarks of an incredible vacation just waiting to happen. How many can you see in one trip? Lake Zurich Travel can plan an unbeatable tour of Scotland, using their connections and experience to fulfill your grandest expectations. NEW BUSINESSES AND OLD STANDBYS SPARK REVIVAL
ARTICLE JODY GRIMALDI PHOTOGRAPHY LONG GROVE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
I
f you’ve driven through historic downtown Long Grove recently you may have noticed an uptick in activity, as this
irresistibly quaint little burg once again shakes off the dust to break new ground. First settled in the 1840’s, this intersection of two Indian trails became a commerce center for area farmers. By 1900 it featured two corner stores, a creamery, a hotel, a tavern, and even a town hall. As automobiles replaced the horse and wagon, the AAA was formed in Chicago to advocate for road improvements. Long Grove’s old wooden bridge was replaced in 1906 with the classic iron truss structure known today as the town’s iconic landmark, and the town became a popular destination for early auto enthusiasts. Ironically, this burgeoning mobility prompted early Long Grove’s downfall (and, much later, its revival). Long Grove lost its strategic, crossroads-location advantage; area residents could drive to larger towns for weekly shopping. Some local shops closed; others tried to adapt. The Smithy put in an auto garage and gas pump. The hotel converted to a private residence. A chance for commercial redemption literally passed them by in 1930, when the state routed Highways 53 and 83 around Long Grove. The rationing and economics of World War II pretty much finished off what was left; by 1945, Long Grove was all but a ghost town. The iron-truss covered bridge is a Long Grove icon dating back to 1906.

Broken Earth Winery offers wine flights for customers to sample their many award-winning wines from their Paso Robles, California vineyard.
As the post-war economy improved, so did the roads, as well as Long Grove’s prospects. Wives of two local farmers acquired the main intersection's corner stores and began selling antiques, handmade dresses, ice cream, and homemade pies. Long Grove again became a fun drive on a nice afternoon, attracting the attention of other antique dealers who bought and repurposed nearby residences as additional shops. Recognizing that uncontrolled expansion could impact the village’s charm, the Long Grove Village Board in its foresight passed the "Historic Landmark Ordinance" in 1962, one of the first of its kind in the country, requiring that new construction and remodeling conform to their established “Long Grove Style.” Imagine: it’s 1967. Your wife has a toothache; how might you help take her mind off the pain? If you’re John Mangel, you offer to take her for a drive to this interesting little crossroads-town called Long Grove. Upon arrival, this entrepreneur was amazed by how many shoppers there were compared to how few stores: these people needed more things to buy, thought John. He immediately began acquiring additional buildings and residences and converting them into additional stores. As fortune would have it, Long Grove’s Village President at the time was Robert Parker Coffin – an engineer and builder by trade. Many new shops were built, including what became two long-time downtown anchor shops: Long Grove Confectionery and Apple Haus. CONTINUED >

4 Open House
REASONS TO MARKET
YOUR HOME NOW
ARTICLE RENEE CLARK
P
unxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Star of the Big Screen
with Bill Murray, and Weather Prophet Extraordinaire, said we’re in for a longer winter. Surprisingly, that could be great news if you are thinking about making a move this spring. Why, you ask; how can freezing cold weather be a good thing for any market? Here are four reasons why putting your house up for sale now could be your best bet:
GETTING THE JUMP ON THE SPRING SELLING SEASON
1 2 3 4
1. LOW INVENTORY MEANS LESS COMPETITION
Inventory is low, so there is less competition. Many “Baby Boomers”
have been waiting for home prices to increase to 2006 levels before selling their homes and moving forward with pre-retirement or retirement plans. This year, many have gained some equity and made the decision to move forward. Inventory, and therefore competition, will be increasing significantly as the spring market rolls into full gear. Beat the competition and consider listing your property for sale now. High demand plus low supply equals higher prices. 2. INCREASING INTEREST RATE FORECASTS MOTIVATE BUYERS
There are buyers who have been looking for some time for “the
perfect home”. In December, the Federal Reserve increased interest rates, with more to come. With interest rates on the rise, many of these buyers are motivated to get off the fence and make a decision. Maybe they will decide to buy your house. 3. HIGHER INTEREST RATES LOWER AFFORDABILITY
The Fed's policy makers indicated they anticipate three rate hikes
to come in 2017, and many experts expect a larger effect on mortgage rates. This is not only a problem for buyers, but also for sellers. As rates increase, the cost of a home to the consumer will increase without providing additional funds for its seller. This automatically makes your home less affordable and potentially harder to sell later. 4. INCREASING RENTS SPUR NEW BUYERS INTO THE MARKET
Rental prices are increasing. Many renters are entering the buyer’s
market, looking for more stability in living expenses, and wanting to take advantage of lower interest rates before they’re gone. According to the National Association of Realtors, “Millennials” now comprise 35% of all home buyers, a share that has been increasing for the last four years, and is expected to lead the buying market in a big way in 2017. So, if you are considering a move, consider acting today, in the

n the shadow of the downtown water tower, at the busiest corner on Wauconda's Main Street, stands an unassuming business that has
been operating nearly 40 years. “I’m lucky, I’ve got the best location around,” says Mark Wolfe, owner of John’s Complete Auto Service. “We’re right where a lot of people in the area pass by either because they are from here or headed someplace else.” Wolfe says he knows how his customers depend on their cars and can't afford to have breakdowns. That’s why he uses the highest quality materials and includes a vehicle safety inspection on all cars serviced. Wolfe and his team of professionals know it is their job to identify and avoid potential mechanical problems, while working to keep every car running like the day it rolled off the factory floor. “It’s true that cars these days are made much better than they used to be,” Wolfe says. “While the quality level for new cars has gone up we can be lulled into thinking that regular maintenance is a thing of the past.” His passion for doing quality work hasn't gone unnoticed in the community. Wolfe recently received the New Entrepreneur of the Year Award, selected by his business peers at the annual Wauconda Area Chamber of Commerce in recognition of exceptional vision and commitment to growing his business through premium customer service, competitive pricing, and standing behind his work. John's Auto has courtesy cars available for customers while their cars are being serviced.
According to USA Today, the average age of vehicles on the road in the U.S. is rising, up to 11.5 years old. Improvements in vehicle quality have made cars more reliable, so consumers are less likely to scrap their vehicles when they buy new ones. That means after a car’s warranty expires, regular maintenance is more important than ever, especially when a vehicle is handed down to younger drivers in a family. To help local families, Wolfe’s website has a comprehensive overview of helpful advice and tips to keep vehicles on the road. His approach is straight-forward and honest, much like the big smile and strong handshake he shares with everyone he greets. John’s Complete Auto Service, 221 S. Main St., Wolfe, making sure the customer knows what repairs are needed. 28
