September –Discover Your Style . . .
When I think of “style,” I think of my mother, Alma Eileen LaPier Jensen, who had her own sense of style in the way she dressed, in her choice of music, in her career and as a wife and mother. As a city girl from Los Angeles, she married my father, a Utahn bound for southwestern Idaho to purchase a farmstead, and thus, she became a farmer’s wife. She was innately stylish in the way she dressed. On the farm, she wore colorful housedresses and ban danas to complement, but if she left the farm to go shopping, she dressed up. She had shoes, handbags and jewelry to harmonize with every outfit. Money was often tight, so she bought a sewing machine, a McCall’s pattern and fabric, and taught herself to create a wardrobe that was the envy of all. She left an indelible mark on her children and grandchildren. Through her connections, I was selected to model in a couple of fashion shows and was rather pleased with myself. For one show I was to model a red suit—followed by the featured outfit of the event—a little black dress. Unfortunately, in my haste to get back on the platform, I failed to remove the red skirt before putting on the little black dress. Being oblivious to this, I marched out on stage with the confidence of a New York runway model, but alas! I had a red border all around the bottom of the little black dress and became the laughingstock of all those in attendance. I don’t believe I ever lived that down—and that was the end of my modeling career. It was then my mother shared her own adage: “Style defines us—our style refines us.”
Style is that feature of imagination and inventiveness expressed in one’s activities and tastes. It may be communicated by our choice of fashion, our homes, our cars, the art we choose and how we spend our time. Our style may be exemplified in our hobbies and even our life’s work.

Vance and business partner, Greg Christensen, launched Chic Gents in 2018, initially traveling to meet clients in the comfort of their own homes. They dis cussed designs, took measurements, delivered suits and performed final fittings. By April 2021, they opened their ideal storefront in Green Gate Village on 76 West Tabernacle—and their business continues to grow.
Whether dressing for work, a wedding, a night out on the town or church, Chic Gents aims to provide cli ents the perfectly fitted suit, paired with exceptional quality and service. Believing that each person’s suit buying experience should be “unique and personal,” their process begins with a dedicated appointment time to capture more than 30 measurements and gather other details, such as the type of shoes you wear, the colors and styles you prefer—and even where you carry your cell phone to identify the right pocket placement and style!
– Vance Rowley
The adage, “dress better to feel better,” is more than mere fashion advice. The link between appearance and self-confidence is undeniable—and when we are confi dent, we naturally feel better and perform better. St. George entrepreneur and clothier, Vance Rowley, describes what it was like to wear custom-fit ted clothing for the first time: “From the moment I slipped on that suit and shirt—that was cut to my exact body—I knew custom suits were for me.” At that point in time, Vance was living in Thailand, which is known for a thriving fashion industry and worldclass tailors; he was serving a voluntary two-year mission for his church. His command of the local language and culture developed during that time, coupled with his life long desire to start his own clothing business, ultimately led to the genesis of Chic Gents, a custom clothing com pany serving clients from Las Vegas to Salt Lake City.
Fabrics made specifically for suiting are sourced from top mills in Europe, Australia and Asia, which allows Vance and Greg to offer a vast range of options, more than 2,000 in fact, to help their clients find the “quality and perfection” that meet their personal creativity. Selections include linens, wools, silks or cottons to fit seasonal and style preferences for tra ditional or trendy looks. Once design details and measurements are established, the fabrics are ordered and shipped to Thailand, where each suit is 100% hand-cut and sewn. In a final fitting, a Chic Gents associate will check for any needed adjustments to ensure the fit is exact and the client is satisfied.
FASHION FORWARD | PROFESSIONAL SERVICES
“In St. George, you might not want to wear a suit year-round,” Greg explains, offering that linen fabrics and lighter dress shirts are preferred in the southwest, whereas heavier weighted wools are better suited for northern winters.

Greg entered the clothing business after 15 years in the semi-conductor industry and another entre preneurial endeavor. Having lived in Salt Lake and St. George, he has a keen understanding of client needs based on lifestyle and even the climate where they live.
“From the moment I slipped on that suit and shirt—that was cut to my exact body—I knew custom suits were for me.”
“We make it how you want it, and we can accommo date every trend,” says Vance, adding their handmade suits come with the quality to last a lifetime if cared forBeyondproperly.suits, Chic Gents makes custom shirts, sport coats, pants, vests and casual wear. “Quite often a client is remodeling one room, so I can help them specify the materials they want to use, pick out flooring and paint, and then find the fur nishings they need,” says Marianne.
On an already-scorching Tuesday morn ing in July, Marianne—clad in her trade mark stylish garb—was on her way to local suppliers in St. George to look at fireplaces and tiles for a client’s new home. Despite the heat, Marianne was feeling anything but burned out.

Marianne’s handiwork has been seen in six Parade of Homes dwellings between Park City and St. George. She has also served as director of com munications for the Intermountain Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers, and she is a member of the Southern Utah Home Builders Association. Marianne spends many of her off hours visiting furniture markets, tile shows and home builder shows to understand new materials and trends.
Between appointments she also listens to podcasts and attends virtual sem inars to further increase the expertise she brings to her role. Despite accolades from the indus try and her peers, Marianne says her greatest satisfaction comes from the one-on-one service she provides to every client, no matter how large or small their job will be. Before each con tract begins, Marianne requests that new clients complete a questionnaire detailing their aims for their project. She ascertains their preferred style—be it traditional, farmhouse, transitional, contemporary or other—aiming for as much specificity as possible. She views this exchange of information as crucial to each project’s success. Says Marianne, “I will hold my client’s hand throughout the entire project. I curate a full range of styles; whatever the client’s vision is, my job is to make that a reality. Thanks to my long-term relationships with over 40 furniture manufacturers, I can offer my clients significant discounts, often as much as 40% to 50%. I will take a client all the way through a project, from whatever building materials need to be specified, to final artwork for their walls. That’s really my niche.”

HOW LOCALLY OWNED BAVARIAN WERKSTÄTTE BECAME BEST IN CLASS Bavarian Werkstätte specializes in BMW, MINI and European car repairs , and offers a 24-month, 24,000-mile nationwide warranty Bavarian Werkstätte technicians offer 40 years of combined BMW technical experience DRIVER’S NOTEBOOK | LOCAL SERVICES22

Owned and operated by Washington City residents, Chris and Lori Long, Bavarian Werkstätte recently earned the Best of Southern Utah 2022 gold-level award as an auto service center. What began as a small repair shop from their home garage has become a state-of-the-art workshop with five full-time and experienced mechanics and two full-time service writers. Their specialty? High-end European cars, with a particular niche in BMWs and MINIs.
SERVICING STYLISH
Like many, Chris’s love for cars began while playing with Matchbox toys and attending car shows with his dad. However, cars became more than just a hobby. From childhood and into adulthood, Chris tried to memorize every car on the road—and one car happened to spark his interest and change the course of his life. At age 15, Chris bought his first BMW, an E28 528E. He saved his paychecks and worked on that car in his free time, restoring it mechanically and esthetically. Chris recalls, “My parents tried to persuade me out of it, but I got the car running, and it snowballed fromChristhere.” turned his passion into purpose, and after several years, purchased more BMWs. Fortuitously, he also got a job as a porter with Excluservice, a German-owned European repair shop in his home state of Maryland, where the owner had a fleet of BY DARCY SANDVIK

Later, Chris moved to St. George, where he met Lori. She points at Chris when asked about her passion for cars. “It was him,” she laughs. Lori has spent a decade helping to grow the workshop into what it is today, and has learned the most common problems car owners face regarding their vehicles—all the while overseeing advertising, financials and HR. While brainstorming ideas for Lori’s official title, they land on “general manager” or “jack of all trades!” Since operating from their home and relying on word-of-mouth advertising, the demand for their services has grown, along side demand for a European car repair center in southern Utah. As a natural result, their happy customers have helped to establish the Bavarian Werkstätte brand through out the last 10 years. Chris and Lori expanded into two other locations before building their newest home on Washington Dam Road. Their posh workshop boasts pristine white floors, Bosch and G Power equipment, and European car technicians with more than 40 years of combined BMW technical experience. Team members pride themselves on their quality of work and the relationships they have established by providing detailed and reliable care for their customers’ valued assets.

“We started this business from the ground up, rooted in integrity,” Chris says, expressing gratitude to all who have contributed to their success. “This workshop has become our American dream,” Chris concludes with sentiment.
“Our goal is to provide dealer-level service with local convenience to southern Utah,” explains Lori. “We want the BMW and MINI owners here to know they have access to the same high-quality service that the dealer provides, with the newest diagnostic technology, but with a more personal approach,” she states further, adding that owners can enjoy their luxury vehicles without having to worry about driving to Las Vegas or Salt Lake City for regular maintenance and repairs.

Asher Swan has an impressive portfolio of work that includes portrait, commer cial and artistic images. At the heart of his aesthetic is the emotive power of light to capture and convey emotion. Asher is the official photographer for Southern Utah University and staff photographer for St. George City Lifestyle.
A grain of sand does not seem like much when seen with the naked eye—infinites imal, one might say. When many grains of sand come under immense pressure, how ever, minerals blend and granules melt, and evolving into something unique and usable.
Contact: asherswanphoto.com or asherswanphoto@gmail.com
In Asher’s words: “I love color. You won’t often see black and white images from this series as I love how color evokes emotionality within the different color pallets I choose. My hope is that the different shapes and hues offered allow for introspective thought and feelings based on those choices. When this series started, color wasn’t much in play. I was focused on how to capture just the shape of the object at hand. So, after spending many nights in the studio, I found a technique that allowed the shape to be the highlight and not the specular highlights that came from using my flashes. Once color did come into play, I was off to the races with color theory and balance of the different colors I chose. I placed my lights in a manner that extenu ated the shape and created a mood for the audience to perceive how they wanted. I love the simplicity of the shape of the glass and color. For me, it’s a unique way to fill an image with interesting elements that keep the audience feeling something from a 2D perspective. Creating images with depth and meaning are paramount in my process.”

No longer a tum bling granule in the wind, the new form and colors added, blend to create natural gradients within, each becoming a com plementary aspect of the whole image. Each piece stands on its own, leading the eye down a vibrant path of shape and design, conveying emotion and intrigue, and nudging introspection and perhaps eliciting a prompting of a few questions.

impound lot one day, he immediately negotiated a purchase price for a whopping $325. Muscle cars were becoming classics, and when restored, this car would be worth thousands. That purchase began a lifetime of restoring old Mopar muscle cars to their original style and glory. And Jeff had the skills for the job. He could weld, paint, upholster and rebuild engines, having learned everything about the cars he loved. Karen would say, “You can give him a handful of nuts and bolts and he will tell you exactly where they fit on the cars he restores.”
Years of looking and networking paid off when Jeff heard about such a car, unrestored, in a rural town out of state. He set off on a treasure hunt knowing only the name of the town. After talking to several people, one person said he knew someone who knew someone else, and he eventually located the car. It was love at first sight, and Jeff negotiated with the owner for a car that was not for sale! For the next decade, the tables were turned as Jeff’s sons helped him restore his dream car, transforming it from rust to Karenriches. and
Jeff’s sons now have sons of their own, and they still look forward to being with their dad, under the hood of the latest project car.
Jeff says, “If you attend a car show in the St. George area and see a ‘plum crazy’ purple 1970 Hemi Cuda convertible, it is probably mine! Stop by and say hello!”
As his children grew, Jeff set a goal to restore a car with each of his three sons during their teenage years. This would help build close relationships and teach them to work hard for what they wanted. He also said it would “keep them broke and out of mischief during those formative years.”
AUTO CLUB | AUTO + MARINE
As time passed, Jeff’s sons had beautifully restored cars, but Jeff was still searching for his dream car—the 1970 Hemi Cuda convertible—which he deemed “the king of muscle cars.” Because only 21 were made with the Hemi engine, finding or affording one would be impossible. The next best thing would be to find and restore a 1970 Cuda convertible (1 of 132), and swap the original engine with a Hemi engine .
