In anticipation of Mother’s Day, we are celebrating local moms and all that motherhood entails in this issue. No matter one’s family situation or stage of life, Mother’s Day is an opportunity to show appreciation for the moms in our circle and nurture those relationships. This month, we invite you to join us in honoring all the mothers who have chosen to put down roots in Southlake and pour their talents into this community, helping to make it a place where families and businesses can thrive. They’re running retail stores, selling homes and building homes, teaching students, providing healthcare and wellness services, raising kids, and so much more. The work of motherhood is often unsung, so in this issue, we’re excited to introduce you to a few local ladies exhibiting the beauty and diversity of motherhood.
We are grateful to all the moms who surround us and support Southlake, and we are also thankful for our daughter Ava who made Mandy a mom when we adopted her eight years ago, as well as the three children we had the privilege of fostering. Mothering takes a village, so we encourage you to love and help the moms in your life this month and every month.
We can’t wait for you to meet some of the amazing moms who help support Southlake as you flip through the pages! These moms are not the moms of yesteryear. Being a mom today means being knowledgeable and skilled in the complex technology many of our children were born into, along with staying current on the latest cutting-edge childhood medical, educational, and social research. The careers that many of today’s moms hold are more diverse than ever before, and that has proven to be a blessing for families, and the American economy, and extremely demanding on moms that are still, in large part, the main caregivers for children. Balancing the nurturing that children require, along with demanding careers and social life, has always kept moms busy. In so many respects, it’s never been a better time to be a mom, but it’s also never been more fast-paced and more complicated than now. America has always moved along at a blazing pace in every respect.
Thank you to all the moms of Southlake for showing our children that you can do anything you put your mind to, and that you can have fun doing it, too!

What do these five women of Southlake have in common? Each of them are working mothers with unique family lives, work lives, and perspectives on how they manage it all with style and grace.
As the designer at Manor Home Furnishings located in the Southlake Town Square, Dawn Coday is an expert at accessorizing spaces, but more importantly, at investing in relationships and making dreams come true. She sees her current role
as a different way of helping clients express their creativity, something she did for many years for her young students as an elementary school music teacher. "Our goal at Manor is for people to love their home and be happy in it," she says. Dawn is a single mother to three young women, which includes a set of twins. Although single parenthood has entailed a lot of work, she has always treasured her time with each daughter and encourages other mothers to do
the same. Her advice to moms struggling to balance everything on their plate is to prioritize the well-being of the family above everything. "The time is fleeting," says Dawn.
Lindsey Han is a mother, step-mom, hair stylist, and owner of Lindsey Han Salon, a niche, mini-boutique salon specializing in balayage, lived-in blondes, and hand-tied extensions. Her salon is currently located in A Suite Salon on Southlake Blvd. but she hopes to open her own storefront sometime this year. Having lived in the Southlake/Colleyville area for nearly 15 years, Lindsey shares that her favorite aspect of running a business here is the strong support system. She has found many customers from moms referring her to other moms, and she loves the women-supporting-women community aspect found in this area. Lifting up ladies and working well alongside them is second nature to Lindsey, who proudly shares that she has a wonderful bond and co-parenting relationship with her stepchild's mother. Although her work and family obligations can be a lot to handle at times, she says she's found a good balance. "Don't worry about the house being perfect," Lindsey says. "Memories are more important."
Meliea Ware is not only the Vice President of Operations at KeyCity Capital, a private equity firm on White Chapel Blvd., she's also a mother to three, soon to be four, boys, all under the age of 7. Having worked in real estate for 10 years before joining KeyCity Capital, Meliea is driven, hardworking, and up for the challenge. Her favorite aspect of working in Southlake is how local businesses uplift one another, which is just one of many reasons that KeyCity Capital's CEO received
the "40 Under 40" business award last year from the Dallas Business Journal. Meliea shares that life as a mom with another on the way and VP of Operations can get hectic, but she prioritizes being present with her family. "When I'm there, I'm there," she says. "There is no perfect balance to motherhood; just do the best you can."
Mollie Martin is an expecting mom who works alongside her mother and uncle at Manor Home Furnishings as the Social Media Manager. She shares that her favorite aspect of getting to work in Southlake is that "there are so many exciting happenings going on," says Mollie, "and there's a unique culture here." When asked about what she loves most about working at Manor, she emphasizes the family-business aspect. Not only does she get to work alongside her mom and uncle, but they all prioritize treating clients as well as family by building strong relationships.
Mandy Calvin is the Publication Director and Assistant Publisher of Southlake City Lifestyle, which she helped start from the ground up alongside her husband, Jon, the Publisher. She is also the proud adoptive mother to her 8 year old daughter, Ava. Mandy and Jon have always worked as a team, but their new venture with City Lifestyle allows Mandy to utilize her passion for creativity, as she brings her knack for design to create the magazine cover shoots and more. "I'm enjoying learning all I can about Southlake and getting immersed in the community," says Mandy. "We have been welcomed with open arms and want to return the favor to all of our wonderful partners by treating them like family."
“Don’t worry about the house being perfect,” Lindsey says. “Memories are more important.”

Calabrese’s Culture and Values Are As Delicious As Its Dishes
ARTICLE BY KAROLINE CHAPMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PROVIDED BY CALABRESECalabrese is a culinary pillar of the Southlake community, offering a delectable spread of authentic Italian dishes curated by Chef Luciano from Viczena, Italy. With two gardens, one behind the restaurant and one in Roanoke, Calabrese uses the freshest herbs to create savory pestos, sweet mojitos, and much more. But their commitment to freshness doesn't stop there. "In-house, we make all of our pasta, butcher our own meats, and spend more in freight than we do in rent getting the seafood delivered," says Shawn Horne, "Director of Good Times and Leisure" at Calabrese.
Chef Luciano sources ingredients from all over Italy and spares no expense getting items delivered swiftly and accurately. Committed to the philosophy of serving the highest quality ingredients, the Calabrese staff strives to use the best ingredients, produce, meats, and seafood, all prepared with techniques authentic to true Italian cooking.
For anyone who has yet to set foot inside the restaurant, Shawn suggests the following menu items to create a memorable meal. "I would start with the Zafarana and the Burrata. Order the Hearts of Palm salad and
our Caesar for the second course. Then, try a pasta course to share for the third course. For the main course, order the Branzino, the Cernia (Sea Bass), or the OssoBucco. For dessert, I suggest a frozen tiramisu cocktail, limoncello, the Capo amaro from Calabria, the Kimbo coffee experience, and the Bombolini's (Italian donuts with creme anglaise and nutella.)"
It's not just the menu and ingredients that are high-caliber at Calabrese: the community culture at the restaurant is a large component of its long-lasting success.
"Oscar Renda, the owner, is the reason we are all here," says Shawn. "He is the most generous, thoughtful, and humble owner I have ever met. His love of food and knowledge of the traditions, culture, and history of Calabria is unmatched. During the pandemic, he did not let anyone go. Oscar supplemented the employee's income, fed everyone every day, and was our biggest supporter during those times. He is the best owner anyone of us has ever worked for. We owe it to him to make this the best restaurant in DFW."
In addition to taking care of its incredible staff and serving the local community, the leaders of Calabrese strive to care for the global community through its sustainable practices.
While the majority of restaurants are notorious for waste, Calabrese "makes all of our own stocks; we do trash can audits,
and recycle our cooking oil into biofuel," says Shawn. "Sustainability, recycling, upcycling, and "Snout to-Tail" are all components of our culture at Calabrese."
Even the seat of its iconic decorative Vespa perched above the center of the dining room is decorated with reclaimed corks, letting nothing go to waste.
While most fine dining establishments focus their main dishes on steak or fish exclusively, Calabrese offers incredible Vegan options to accommodate all customers. Try their Vegan Squash Spaghetti or Vegan Italian Sausage Pasta dish for a fresh alternative. These are satisfying, full meals, unlike most places that simply offer Vegan sides and substitutions rather than an entire entrée.
The leaders at Calabrese are beyond grateful to be based in Southlake because of the town's strong sense of community, family values, and charity. "Southlake looks out for their own," says Shawn. "We feel that it is not only our duty, but also our responsibility to give back to this wonderful community. We currently support nine local charities and support/donate to all of our Police, Fire, and First Responder members of our fine community."
Come to Calabrese for family dinners in the dining room, or host your next shower, birthday party, wedding reception, or any life gathering in one of its three private event spaces.
“During the pandemic, the owner supplemented the employee’s income, fed everyone every day, and was our biggest supporter during those times. We owe it to him to make this the best restaurant in DFW.”
MEET THREE LOCAL FEMALE ARTISTS AND THEIR EXCEPTIONAL WORK.
BY
SUBMITTEDBY
EACH INDIVIDUAL ARTIST“I went in for my kindergarten checkup, and the doctors found early stages of Leukemia. Instead of starting school, I started chemotherapy,” says local artist Olivia Bennett . After receiving her diagnosis at age five, Olivia’s childhood painting hobby became her emotional escape as she navigated cancer. When her treatment concluded, and she returned to school, Olivia’s teachers recognized her artistic gifts and encouraged her parents to find supplemental artistic training to help hone her abilities.
As her talents grew, so did her fame, with Olivia selling her first painting at age 8, which propelled her to sell her work at art shows around Texas. Media attention for her art led her to meet President George W. Bush at 12 and appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show at 13.
Despite her larger-than-life experiences that have allowed her to travel the world, there’s “no place like home” for Olivia, who is back to her roots living again in Southlake, where she opened her first gallery and her career kicked off.
“I’ve painted everything from landscapes to portraits, but my focus has always been on nature and wildlife,” says Olivia. “I love color and believe it’s SO important to surround yourself with beautiful and uplifting images, which is why I paint what I paint.”
Olivia shares that her favorite type of art to create is contemporary florals, and roses are her most commissioned design. Recently, she’s expanded into footwear, having launched the OLIVIA BENNETT Collection by Twisted X.(R TM) last year. The footwear collection features 14 shoe/cowgirl boot styles using sustainable materials. Following two years of development, she will soon release her first apparel collection, where each piece incorporates her signature art. Currently, she’s working on a new painting series called “Texas Forever,” inspired by her love for her home state she’s grown to appreciate more with time after her many travels and opportunities to live in other states.
Not only is Southlake home to Olivia’s career, but it’s also where her family began. She met her husband John 13 years ago when he came into her gallery, then located in Southlake Town Square, to commission a painting. Fast forward to now, and they are the parents of one 8-year-old son, Graham, whom Olivia homeschools.
“I loved my experience of being homeschooled through middle and high school, so I knew early on that I wanted to homeschool Graham, too,” says Olivia. “I want him to think creatively, outside the box, and to pursue his passions young. Homeschooling allows us to travel many months of the year, and we do. He gets to join me for my meetings and share our experience of owning a business. I want him to know that just because you grow up doesn’t mean you must stop playing and creating.”
Navigating childhood cancer has impacted every aspect of Olivia’s life, including how she parents. “I’ve learned that health is wealth,” she says. “Maintaining physical and emotional well-being is my top priority, not keeping up with what everyone else is doing. We all have unique callings and aptitudes, and when we are in the “flow” of what we are meant to do, life is more enjoyable for everyone. I encourage other moms to protect their energy and focus on their musts.”
Olivia’s hopes for her son Graham are similar to her advice for other female artists striving to make a name for themselves. “Find your voice and share it,” says Olivia. “The more authentic, the better. In my experience, people buy art that allows them to connect with you and your story.”
Today, Olivia continues to create commissioned art and focuses on philanthropic giving for cancer and health-related organizations. To see Olivia and her new collection, visit her pop-up that will benefit the MeSquared Foundation held at Kendra Scott in Southlake Town Square on May 6th from 10 am to 2 pm. Follow her on Instagram, Facebook, and oliviabennett.com to keep up with her fantastic work.

- Local Artist Olivia Bennett
“All of us are artists in one form or another; it’s important to try different forms of art to explore what amazes you and brings that smile to your face,” says Riya , freshman at Southlake Carrol High School, artist, and entrepreneur.
Although she’s only lived in Southlake since 2019 after being brought up in India, Riya has already established herself as a local force for creative artistry. Her business, KaarigaRiya Crafts, became part of the Southlake Chamber of Commerce in 2021, and she was a vendor at the Southlake Diwali Fest the same year.
Riya’s crafting business, where she creates personalized pieces, started during the pandemic. To use the unexpected extra time on her hands, she dove into learning how to create art with epoxy resin, her medium of choice. With the guidance of her supportive parents, she launched her business to sell her resin pieces, such as votives, cutting boards, coasters, and more, as well as custom work.
“Epoxy resin is a clear liquid that hardens into a glossy, durable and transparent surface when mixed with a catalyst,” Riya explains. “I create various effects by adding pigments like glitter, mica powder, alcohol ink, dried flowers and other materials into the resin before pouring it on various surfaces such as wood, canvas, metal or glass. Resin art can also be used to make jewelry, sculptures and other 3D objects by using molds or free-form techniques. I love this art form because it allows the artist to manipulate the viscosity, transparency, texture and color effects as per custom needs.”
The chances of finding Riya at Southlake’s biggest annual events are high, as she’s set up shop at the Southlake Oktoberfest and Diwali Fest. She aspires to continue creating art for local businesses, whether for decor, auctions, or gifts. Currently, she is working on hosting local workshops to teach and share the art of resin, and she’s been recruited by Southlake Carroll High School to create merchandise as a Dragon Logo licensee.
To stay up-to-date with Riya’s unique work and upcoming workshops, visit her site kaarigariya. com or drop her a line at kaarigariya@gmail.com.
“All of us are artists in one form or another; it’s important to try different forms of art to explore what amazes you and brings that smile to your face,” - Riya
“Like many people, 2020 made me look at things differently as everything around us changed,” says Lindsey Han , owner of Lindsey Han Salon. “I took stock of the variety of hair services that I’d always offered and decided that I wanted to focus on my talents and passions.”
For Lindsey, this meant utilizing her hair color expertise garnered through 14 years of experience to narrow her focus, becoming a Blonde Specialist. Through transitioning to a niche stylist, she’s been able to stay ahead of the trends and create her own “Lindsey Han Method” of blonde specialties.
At her high-end, niche Southlake salon, Lindsey and her stylists focus on lived-in-blondes, blonde balayage, and hand-tied extensions to create natural yet stunning effects.
Lindsey's services have been so popular among Southlake ladies that she’s started an apprentice program, The Lindsey Han Training and Apprenticeship Program. To date, her program has added two new stylists to the salon.
To better your blonde and book an appointment with Lindsey, visit lindseyhansalon.glossgenius.com.
The moms and the mother figures in our lives mean everything to us. They deserve the best every day, of course. But at least one day out of the year, we get to shower them with the same love and thoughtfulness they give to us so selflessly.
This year, we hope you’ll consider some memorable ways to make lasting memories with the mom or mother figure in your life. If you haven’t already planned something special, take a look at our list of ideas and circle your favorites. If you have kids, let them join in the fun too!
Whether you decide to spend a day at home or enjoy a day on the town, these innovative celebration ideas will include fun for the whole family and make Mom feel loved. Whatever activity or surprise you land on to show your mom, wife, sister or maternal figure your appreciation for all they do, the most important thing is that you all get to spend some quality time together.
Mother’s Day arrives just as spring is in full bloom. Take advantage of the season by going to a flower arranging class with mom.
Before Mother’s Day, go through everybody’s camera rolls and Instagram feeds and choose her favorite photos. Get them printed ahead of time so you can make a memory book. You might just love it so much you make it a yearly tradition.
Mom will truly appreciate you going out of your way to set her up with a massage or facial appointment. Invite her friends along, too!
Songs about mothers and mom’s favorite songs can come together into the perfect playlist to put on during brunch or dinner. You can either make it for her or take turns being DJ and alternate picks.
DIY pizza: It’s a craft (depending on how artfully you place the toppings), an activity and a meal all at once! Start with basic pizza dough, then everyone gets to add their favorite toppings. Mom gets the first pick, of course.
Croquet, cornhole, bocce, outdoor Jenga or horseshoes — what’s your family’s game of choice? Split into teams and drum up some friendly rivalry — while soaking in rays — with a backyard challenge. Make it an annual event, and pass around a trophy to the winner each year.
For the mom who’s always seeking adventure, a trip to your nearest amusement park will be a welcome surprise. Not only will you be able to treat her to her fill of funnel cakes and caramel corn, but she’ll enjoy all the rides and attractions her heart desires. If you ask us, it’s a win-win.
Sure, backyard barbecues are often associated with Father’s Day, but Mom loves her burgers and dogs, too, so why should Dad get all the fun? If the weather cooperates, fire up the grill!
If you do a DIY craft project, write a poem or come up with a silly dance, you know mom will love it because it is 100% you. No one can one-up a one-of-a-kind experience! You can make them for her and present them to her, or involve her in their creation.
Gardeners know that Mother’s Day is the perfect time to start planting seeds. Get the whole family outside and dig in the dirt together. Every time she sees them, she’ll be reminded of the special day — it’s the gift that keeps on giving! Some flowers that are fairly easy to maintain include sunflowers, marigolds and sweet peas.
Not only will you leave with a one-of-a-kind piece, but you’ll also be able to bond as you explore a new activity.
There’s nothing like waking up with the sun and going to the farmer’s market on the weekend. Pick fresh produce and discover new favorites with mom, coffee in hand.
Whether this involves digitizing old VHS tapes or getting video files off your phone and onto the TV, dig into the family archives and host a home-movie marathon. She’ll get emotional seeing how much everyone has grown.
Dad knows - Mom has a to-do list a mile long. Whether it’s tasks around the house or a DIY project, find out what has been nagging Mom and help her cross it off her list by doing it for her!
