Life is Full When Hearts and Plates Are Too
November feels like the pause button in the middle of life’s chaos. Between shuttling kids to dance, soccer, and every other activity on the calendar, it’s easy to get swept along without stopping to breathe. This month gives us a chance to appreciate what we have, look ahead with gratitude, and dive into the joy of shopping. As you check gifts off your list, I encourage you to shop local—especially on Small Business Saturday—so we can keep the Somerset Hills thriving through the season and beyond.
And then, of course, there’s the food. While Christmas holds the crown as my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving is a close second. Truth be told, I’m more about the sides than the turkey—give me mashed potatoes, stuffing, and corn and I’m happy. Anyone else secretly prefer the sides? Still, my true weakness is pumpkin pie. I don’t know why I don’t eat it year-round. Perfectly good breakfast, dessert, or midnight snack—though in my world, a “midnight snack” really means 9 p.m. This year, I’ll pull out the trusty elastic band pants so I can enjoy guilt-free seconds (or thirds).
This month’s Readers’ Choice Awards celebrate the businesses you voted for: Best Daycare Center, Best Speech & Language Pathologist, Best Senior Living Community, Best Cleaning Service, and Best Private Chef/Caterer. Turn to page 14 to see which earned Readers’ Choice status, and follow us on Instagram (@bridgewater_somerset_hills) for new categories each month.
We’re also featuring stories that inspire and refresh. Turn to page 22 for our cover story on W Fort Lauderdale, where ocean views meet modern glam for the ultimate getaway. On page 26, you’ll find a feature on body gratitude—an invitation to rethink how we view health and embrace self-compassion. And if you’re planning your fall wardrobe, turn to page 44 for a style guide on layering and colors that keep you polished wherever the weekend takes you.
And if you’re still clinging to summer like I am, flip to our coverage of the Barefoot Country Music Fest (page 18). From Jason Aldean to Jelly Roll, the fourday celebration turned Wildwood into the unofficial capital of country music. Sunshine, sand, and a little twang—what more could you ask for?
May your hearts (and your plates) be full this season—and if you save me a slice of pumpkin pie, I promise it won’t go to waste.

Lucy Zimmerman, Co-owner
at the Barefoot COUNTRY MUSIC FEST
Garden State City Lifestyle was grateful to have a front-row view on Wildwood’s iconic beach at the 2025 Barefoot Country Music Fest — and it did not disappoint. Held June 19–22, the four-day celebration drew thousands of fans from across the nation to sing, dance and soak in coastal vibes.
Headliners included Jason Aldean, Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, Rascal Flatts and Jordan Davis, with more than 40 additional artists lighting up
multiple stages. From chart-topping anthems to beachside ballads, the lineup delivered nonstop entertainment and crowd-pleasing singalongs. Wilson brought powerhouse vocals and glittering style, Jelly Roll captivated with authenticity, and Rascal Flatts had fans of all ages belting every chorus.
The setting did half the magic. With the Atlantic as a backdrop and a steady ocean breeze, sets rolled from golden-hour glow into neon-lit nights. Fans in cowboy boots and flip-flops mingled along the boardwalk between shows, grabbing lemonades and soft-serve before hustling back for the next guitar solo.
Between performances, festivalgoers explored fan zones, sponsor activations and shaded lounges, while vendors served everything from barbecue to boardwalk classics. Beach-friendly production kept lines moving and sightlines clear; even from farther back, big screens and stacked sound kept the action close.
Standout moments included surprise guest appearances, acoustic breaks that quieted the beach to a hush and late-night closers that turned the shoreline into one swaying chorus. By Sunday, Wildwood felt like the unofficial capital of country music — and we left sunkissed and grateful for the view.
Whether you’re a country die-hard or just in it for summer vibes, Barefoot Country Music Fest is a must. Mark your calendar for next year; once you’ve danced barefoot in the sand to your favorite hits, you’ll count down until the next one.
If you go next year: Book lodging early, pack a brimmed hat and reef-safe sunscreen, bring a light layer for ocean breezes after sunset and consider a small beach blanket for between sets. Comfortable footwear is a win — boots optional, flip-flops welcome.

Estate Planning Attorneys
Your Family & Your Legacy
At Lyons & Associates, P.C., we guide individuals and families through thoughtful, customized estate planning—so your wishes are honored, your loved ones are protected, and you have real peace of mind.
Whether you’re creating your first plan or updating an existing one, we make the process clear, compassionate, and efficient.
WHAT IS ESTATE PLANNING?
It’s the legally documented expression of your wishes for asset distribution, guardianship for minor children, and who makes financial and healthcare decisions if you cannot—beneficial for every stage of life, not just the wealthy or elderly.
WHY LEGAL COUNSEL MATTERS
These are binding instruments with long-term consequences. An attorney helps ensure your plan is valid, tailored, and tax-aware—and actually works when needed.
WHY LEGAL COUNSEL MATTERS
Last Will & Testament: Directs distributions to beneficiaries, names an executor, and can nominate guardians. Without a will, intestacy rules control.
Trusts (Revocable & Irrevocable): avoid probate, protect privacy, and may reduce taxes.
Durable Power of Attorney: finances if you’re incapacitated.
Healthcare Directives / Living Will: and end-of-life decisions.
WHEN SHOULD YOU UPDATE?
Review every 3–5 years or after major life events like marriage, divorce, births, big financial changes, or moving states.

Quick Escape
W Fort Lauderdale Delivers a Luxe Getaway with a View
ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY W FORT LAUDERDALE
If you’re craving sun, style, and a serious change of scenery, let me point you straight to W Fort Lauderdale — a sleek, vibrant, and energizing escape that’s just a short flight from home. I recently spent a few days at this oceanfront stunner, and it delivered on every level. Perched right along the city’s iconic beachfront, the 440-room luxury hotel blends nautical design with modern glam, making it perfect for a long weekend (or a midweek recharge) in Florida. And as the Publication Director for Garden State City Lifestyle, I’m grateful that I was invited to experience this first hand at the W Fort Lauderdale.
WHERE OCEAN MEETS EDGE
The vibe hits you the second you pull up under the soaring, sail-like porte cochere. Everything feels intentional — from the hand-woven overhead sails and looped light fixtures to the floor-to-ceiling windows that keep the ocean in constant view. My room was a peaceful retreat with ombré blue curtains, wave-inspired carpets, a plush W Signature Bed, and views I didn’t want to leave.
POOL GOALS, ACHIEVED
W Fort Lauderdale has two incredible pool decks: WET East, which is buzzy and social with weekend DJs, glass walls for the perfect selfie backdrop, and colorful cocktails that make pool days feel like an
Publication Director Carly Mac Manus in the Veuve Clicquot Bungalow
event. But if you’re more in the mood to relax (like I was by Day 2), WET West is your spot — quieter, more serene, and perfectly positioned for sunset views.
One thing I highly recommend? Elevating the pool experience with a Veuve Clicquot Bungalow. We booked one for the day, and it was the ultimate treat — comfy loungers, shaded seating, champagne on ice, and service that made it feel like our own private oasis.
BITES & SIPS THAT HIT THE SPOT
Food and drink — or as W calls it, B&F (Beverage & Food) — are a huge part of the experience. We kicked things off with a fancy dinner at Steak 954, a Stephen Starr-run steakhouse with dry-aged cuts, fresh seafood, and a glowing 15-foot jellyfish tank that sets the mood just right. For a more playful vibe, El Vez, also by Starr, serves up bright Mexican dishes and tequila cocktails with gorgeous ocean views.
During the day, we rotated between snacks at WET Bar & Grill, healthy bites at SoBe Vegan and cocktails in the Living Room, the hotel’s lounge-style heart that’s perfect for people-watching.
FUEL UP & GLOW UP
There’s no shortage of ways to recharge. We borrowed the hotel’s cruiser bikes and pedaled along the boulevard, then hit the 24/7 FIT gym for a quick workout. But my favorite way to unwind? A trip to the AWAY Spa. I booked a signature massage and a glow-up at the Glam Station, which totally reset me for a night out. (Also worth noting: this was the first full-service spa in the entire W brand. It shows.)
LOVE, CELEBRATE, OR SEAL THE DEAL
Whether you’re tying the knot, throwing a big birthday bash, or planning a corporate retreat, this hotel has space to match your vision. From oceanside terraces to the rooftop and the Mingle ballroom, every event setup is chic and photo-ready. There’s also 35,000 square feet of meeting space if you’re coming in with a team — though it hardly feels like work when you’re this close to the beach.
OFF THE PROPERTY, STILL ON THE VIBE
While the W truly has everything you need, we did venture off-property for a couple of local meals that were worth it. Emily’s Garden is a sweet, tucked-away spot for breakfast — the kind of place that feels like a hidden gem. And Mykonos (just a quick drive away) was perfect for dinner: lively, flavorful, and full of Mediterranean charm. It added just the right mix of local flavor to our stay.

The Thankful Body
Gratitude for Yourself This Season
November is often thought of as the season of gratitude. We pause to reflect on the blessings in our lives, the people who support us, and the experiences that bring us joy. But there’s one constant companion that rarely makes it onto our gratitude lists — our own body.
As a holistic health coach and nutritionist, I’ve seen how often people view their body as something to fix, criticize, or push harder. We spend energy focusing on what we wish looked different or functioned better, while overlooking the incredible ways our body supports us every single day.
Practicing gratitude for your body doesn’t mean ignoring your health goals. Instead, it means creating a foundation of respect and appreciation that allows real, sustainable wellness to grow. When you start from a place of thankfulness, you begin to nourish your body out of love, not punishment — and that shift can change everything.
WHY BODY GRATITUDE MATTERS
Modern life makes it easy to feel disconnected from our bodies. We often rush through meals, multitask while eating, or measure ourselves by the numbers on a scale. This mindset can create stress, guilt, and even physical tension.
Gratitude flips that script. Research shows that grateful thinking lowers stress hormones, supports better sleep, and boosts overall mental well-being. When applied to
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY

our relationship with our body, gratitude helps us replace self-criticism with self-compassion. Instead of constantly battling our reflection, we learn to notice the resilience, strength, and quiet miracles happening inside us each day.
Your heart beats 100,000 times every day without you asking it to. Your lungs take in oxygen while filtering out toxins. Your digestive system transforms food into energy and repair. Even on days when you feel tired or run down, your body is working tirelessly to keep you alive and moving forward. That alone is worth a daily “thank you.”
FIVE WAYS TO PRACTICE BODY GRATITUDE
The good news is that cultivating gratitude doesn’t require a dramatic lifestyle change. Small, consistent practices can help you reconnect with your body and appreciate it for what it does — not just how it looks.
Practicing
1. START YOUR DAY WITH THANKS
Before you even get out of bed, pause to thank your body for one thing. It could be as simple as:
• “Thank you legs for carrying me through yesterday’s walk.”
• “Thank you lungs for filling me with breath.”
• “Thank you arms for letting me hug my kids.”
Beginning the day with a moment of appreciation sets a positive tone and reminds you that your body is already enough.
2. PRACTICE GRATITUDE IN THE MIRROR
For many, looking in the mirror is an exercise in critique. Instead, use it as an opportunity to practice gratitude. Each time you catch your
reflection, say one thing you appreciate — your strength, your energy, your smile, or even the way your body has carried you through challenges. Over time, this shifts your internal dialogue from criticism to kindness.
3. MOVE FOR JOY, NOT PUNISHMENT
Exercise should never be about “earning” food or punishing yourself. Movement can be a celebration of what your body can do. Choose activities that bring joy — dancing in your living room, stretching in the morning sun, taking a mindful walk in nature. Approach movement as a way to thank your body for its capabilities, not to correct its shape.
4. EAT WITH GRATITUDE
Mealtimes are a perfect opportunity to pause and appreciate your body. Before eating, take a deep breath and thank your body for processing and using the food to fuel you. You might also thank the food itself — the farmers who grew it, the earth that nourished it, the hands that prepared it. This small pause transforms meals into mindful, nourishing experiences.
5. REFLECT BEFORE BED
End your day by noting one way your body supported you. Maybe it gave you energy to complete a task, allowed you to enjoy laughter with friends, or even carried you through a stressful day. Writing it down or simply reflecting in your mind builds a daily practice of body gratitude.
When you begin to practice body gratitude, you’ll notice subtle shifts. You may feel less pressure to be perfect and more appreciation for your body’s resilience. Choices around food, rest, and movement start to feel less like obligations and more like acts of care. Over time, gratitude builds a healthier, kinder, and more sustainable relationship with yourself.
Remember, gratitude is not about ignoring struggles or pretending everything is perfect. It’s about acknowledging the challenges while also honoring the ways your body shows up for you, day after day.
This season, as you write your gratitude lists and reflect on the blessings in your life, don’t forget to include yourself. Your body has been your partner in every experience—in every laugh, every hug, every step you’ve taken. When you learn to thank your body, you begin to see it not as something to battle, but as something to cherish. Perhaps the most nourishing gift you can give yourself this November is the simple, powerful act of saying: Thank you, body.

WHERE HEALING MEETS ART
FRONTLINE ARTS BUILDS COMMUNITY THROUGH PAPERMAKING AND PRINTMAKING
ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRONTLINE ARTS
What began in 1974 as a grassroots effort to support local printmakers has evolved into one of New Jersey’s most innovative community arts organizations. Today, Frontline Arts is a nonprofit using the power of socially engaged art to connect people, promote healing and foster inclusivity — one sheet of paper at a time.
Formerly known as the Printmaking Center of New Jersey, the organization was founded by a group of artists committed to preserving the craft of printmaking and supporting working artists across the state. In 2018, the nonprofit was officially renamed Frontline Arts after merging with its fiscal project, Combat Paper NJ — a veteran-led papermaking program founded in 2011.
At the heart of Frontline Arts is its flagship program, Frontline Paper, which teaches veterans to transform their military uniforms into handmade paper. Through a process of deconstruction, reclamation and communication, veterans are empowered to share their stories and process their experiences through artistic expression.
“We believe everyone can be an artist,” the organization states. “Our goal is to connect communities through the brave space of creativity and empathy.”
Operating out of the Ralph T. Reeve Cultural Center in Branchburg, Frontline Arts offers professional printmaking and papermaking studios, gallery exhibitions, mobile outreach programs and a wide range of in-person and virtual workshops for all skill levels. The studio space serves not only as a creative hub, but also a community resource center dedicated to environmental sustainability, accessibility and inclusion.
Frontline Arts places a special focus on underrepresented groups. Programs are intentionally designed to break down social barriers and build bridges across communities — whether through veteran support, immigrant storytelling, or arts-based responses to public health crises.
Their less-toxic studio initiative, use of recyclable materials and land acknowledgement practice reflect a deep commitment to sustainability and stewardship. Frontline Arts has also adapted its veteran-based model to work with healthcare professionals, pandemic-affected communities and immigrant families in the South Bronx and Queens.
“Our goal is to connect communities through the brave space of creativity and empathy.”
— FRONTLINE ARTS
With a history spanning five decades, Frontline Arts continues to evolve. Through exhibitions, mobile printmaking programs, and national partnerships, it remains committed to its founding values of education, access and the power of the arts to bring people together.

Georgina and the K9 Resorts Hillsborough
GRATEFUL hearts, wagging TAILS
When Luca Blessent first opened the doors to K9 Resorts Hillsborough, he envisioned more than just a premier boarding and daycare facility. He imagined a place where every dog — from family pets to rescues awaiting their forever homes — could feel safe, cared for, and loved.
That mission has only grown stronger in the years since. Blessent, who owns the Hillsborough location with his wife, Georgina, says gratitude is at the heart of everything they do. “We’re thankful for the trust families place in us, and in return, we make sure every pup who comes through our doors receives the same quality care,” he says.
BEYOND BOARDING
K9 Resorts Hillsborough stands out for the way it weaves community and compassion into its operations. The team regularly provides complimentary boarding for rescue dogs in urgent need of housing, ensuring they are treated with the same attention and comfort as paying guests.
“Our facility has hosted many dogs who might not have had another option,” Blessent says. “Rescue dogs here don’t just have a place to sleep — they have the same positive, enriching experience as any client’s pet.”

K9 Resorts Hillsborough
This year, the resort introduced a new initiative: an adoption package offering free evaluations and three nights of boarding for newly adopted rescue pups. The program is designed to give new pet parents peace of mind as they transition into life with their furry family member.
SAFE, CLEAN, AND COMPASSIONATE
Behind the playtime and pampering, K9 Resorts Hillsborough is meticulous about safety and cleanliness. Every dog undergoes a two-part evaluation before boarding, designed to ensure they’re comfortable with the facility and, if applicable, thrive in group play. For pups who prefer a quieter experience, the resort offers one-on-one play sessions with staff.
“Our goal is for every dog to truly enjoy being here,” Blessent says. “It’s about creating a safe and positive environment, whether that means romping with other dogs or bonding with our team.”
STORIES THAT STAY WITH YOU
Some rescues leave an indelible mark. Last year, a young pit bull named Barney was found abandoned at a park and taken into rescue custody. With no space available, Blessent stepped in to help. Barney stayed at K9 Resorts for several months, quickly becoming a staff favorite. He even made a live television appearance with Blessent to raise awareness about adoption.
Barney has since found a loving home, but he still returns to K9 Resorts for boarding — wagging his tail as if he never left.
THANKFUL FOR THE JOURNEY
Blessent credits the resort’s success not only to its top-tier facilities but also to a staff dedicated to the well-being of every dog. From shy pups who learn to run through the doors with excitement, to rescue dogs who find a second chance at life, every story fuels their gratitude.
“Every adoption, every happy tail wag — that’s what reminds us why we do this,” Blessent says. “We’re thankful to be part of these dogs’ lives, even for just a short while.”
For Blessent, thankfulness goes beyond business. It’s about community, compassion, and making a difference — one paw print at a time.

Versatile Luxury Looks for a New Jersey Thanksgiving
As we transition from summer to autumn and the chill sets in, attention turns to the holidays and their inevitable challenges: “What time should I arrive?” “What dish should I bring?” and perhaps the most daunting — “What do I wear?”

Thanksgiving often kicks off the season of gatherings, and while we can’t necessarily answer every holiday question, we can cover the fashion front. Whether you’re attending a formal supper, a Friendsgiving potluck or a laid-back sofa-side feast, we’ve pulled together a style guide that guarantees you’ll look the part while staying comfortable.
Comfort is always a factor when getting dressed, but it’s especially important for a holiday centered around food. The key to winning Thanksgiving style is finding looks that blend elegance, versatility and function — outfits that transition easily from feast to fireside. Unlike Christmas or New Year’s Eve, Thanksgiving rarely calls for full glam, which gives you more room to play with colors, textures and silhouettes.
To ease the stress of getting dressed, we’ve outlined themes for inspiration. Many of these elevated looks can be pulled together from your own closet, proving you don’t need to splurge on a new wardrobe. And whether your style skews polished or cozy, the best accessory is still a second helping.
SEASONAL SHADES
Why it works: Neutral and earthy tones mirror the fall landscape and give off a cozy yet polished vibe. Easy to layer, mix and accessorize, these shades work for both daytime and evening gatherings.
Styling tip: Pair neutrals with gold jewelry or a textured belt for warmth.
Asymmetric Top in Oyster ($1,090); High-Waisted Cinched Trouser in Ivory ($1,050); Love 85mm Glitter Tulle Pumps ($850)
WHEN IN DOUBT, GO DARK
Why it works: Black is timeless, slimming and endlessly adaptable. It gives you a chic base to play with bold shoes, jewelry or a statement lip, all without feeling overdressed for a family-centric holiday.
Styling tip: Break up the monochrome with a bold lip, animal-print shoe or statement bag. Add an oversized blazer if you want more formality.
Why it works: A jumpsuit is the ultimate “chic with zero effort” look. Comfortable for a long meal yet structured enough to feel elevated, it’s an easy swap for a dress.
Styling tip: Cinch the waist with a sleek belt for definition, or add a cropped cardigan for coziness.
Why it works: Dresses are a no-brainer. Whether midi or sheath, they make a statement and transition seamlessly from cocktails to pumpkin pie.
Styling tip: Try sheer tights if the temperature drops, and swap stilettos for knee-high boots to give your feet a break.
• Classic with a twist: Memento Picnic Midi Dress ($1,880); Maysale Brown Suede Buckle Mules ($915)
• Traditional: Hypnotic Twist Sheath Dress ($1,550); Stuart Power Boot 75 ($850)
FROM FEAST TO FIRESIDE
Why it works: After a big meal, forgiving yet chic pieces keep you comfortable. Luxe knits and cashmere feel like loungewear but look intentional.
Styling tip: Slip into stylish socks, claim your spot on the couch and let elastic waistbands do the work.
• Guest In Residence Pullover Hoodie ($595); Guest In Residence Everywear Pant ($545)
Whether you’re in North Jersey or down the Shore, these Thanksgiving-friendly looks bring New Jersey versatility to holiday dressing. From neutral layers to luxe loungewear, you’ll find an option that’s as comfortable as it is polished — perfect for savoring the season in style.

ROOTED IN GRATITUDE
What the Landscape Teaches Us About Thanks
As the leaves turn and the air cools, November tends to bring a natural pause, a collective moment to reflect, reset, and remember what we're thankful for. And while gratitude is often shaped by the people in our lives, it can also be found in quieter places: in the rhythms of the landscape, and the lessons it offers.
At its best, a landscape is more than a collection of plants and materials. It’s a living system shaped by time, intention, and trust. The same principles that guide the natural world often echo back into how we live and what we value.
Gratitude for Growth That Takes Time
In a world of instant results, the landscape reminds us that the best things unfold slowly. A tree doesn't mature overnight. Soil takes years to build health. Perennials need a few seasons to reach their full form.

Patience is built into the DNA of a garden and with it comes a deeper appreciation for the process. When we slow down to watch a season unfold or witness a garden filling in year by year, we’re reminded that growth, in any form, is worth waiting for.
This perspective is especially powerful in a world that often rewards speed over substance. The landscape challenges us to resist urgency in favor of endurance. Gratitude grows when we invest time and allow time to do its work.
Letting Go Is Part of the Cycle
Autumn is a season of letting go. Leaves drop, perennials fade, the garden winds down. But in the landscape, dormancy isn’t failure. It’s preparation. It’s rest. It’s the necessary pause before renewal.
This rhythm can be a quiet teacher. As homeowners, parents, or professionals, we’re often expected to produce constantly. But the landscape offers a different wisdom: that stepping back can be just as powerful as pushing forward.
The falling leaves, the bare branches, they’re not signs of loss, but trust. Trust that spring will come again. There’s something deeply grounding about remembering that beauty doesn't need to be constant to be enduring. We can be thankful for the pauses, too.
Designing with Purpose, Not Just for Show
Gratitude often comes from using a space well, not just admiring it. A fire pit where stories are shared. A bench where morning coffee becomes ritual. A path that encourages a walk after dinner.
When we design outdoor spaces with intention, they invite meaningful experiences. That’s when a landscape becomes more than a backdrop, it becomes a setting for life to unfold.
AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL TODD - THE TODD GROUP
And over time, those moments are what we grow most thankful for.
Outdoor spaces that hold meaning don’t need to be large or elaborate. A simple spot with good light, a view, and a little peace can change the way we end a day or connect with someone we love. These places and the memories they hold are worth designing for.
Nature’s Details Remind Us to Pay Attention
It’s easy to miss small details in a busy world. But the garden nudges us to notice the last bloom of a rose bush, the pattern of a leaf, the low slant of November light.
These details don’t announce themselves. They require presence. In that way, gratitude and attention are closely linked, both are practices, not instincts.
Just a few moments outside can shift our mindset. The more we notice, the more we appreciate. And the more we appreciate, the richer our experience of home becomes.
Landscapes Reflect What We Value
Ultimately, the landscapes we build and how we care for them reflect what we prioritize. Do we value time together? Solitude? Tradition? Creativity? The garden becomes a mirror. And with every season, it quietly evolves to meet us where we are.
This season, as we prepare to host, harvest, or simply hibernate, may we remember to look out the window and say thank you. For all the quiet ways the land shows up for us, and the lessons it continues to teach.
Gratitude doesn't always need grand gestures. Sometimes, it's found in the soil beneath our feet, the shape of a leaf, or the shared silence around a fire. These are the moments that root us and the ones we carry forward.
ROAST & TOAST
A foolproof garlic–onion chicken to crown the table.
It’s what I call roast season, when colder weather and the holidays make the aroma and sizzle of a centerpiece roast feel almost primeval. As a chef, cooking a roast at home is extra appealing because restaurants keep me on single portions; chefs like to do at home what they don’t do at work.
There’s a lot to like about roasts any time of year: the deep flavor from caramelization that creates an umami-packed crust and locks in juices; the melt-inyour-mouth tenderness as connective tissue breaks down; the visual drama that turns dinner into a celebration; and leftovers that become sandwiches, tacos, salads or stews.
Bottom line: A roast is comfort food at its most luxurious.
KEYS TO A GREAT ROAST
• Bring the meat to room temperature.
• Pat it dry.
• Season generously with salt, pepper and herbs.
• Roast low and slow — 275 to 325 degrees — for tough cuts like chuck or brisket. For tender cuts, start hot at 425 degrees to sear, then lower to finish.
• Elevate the meat on a rack.
• Start checking the internal temperature 30 minutes before the recipe’s stated time — and keep checking.
• Let the meat rest before carving.
• Slice against the grain.
There’s an old saying that a great roast chicken marks a masterful chef. This easy recipe helps you claim that status.

GARLIC–ONION CRUSTED ROAST CHICKEN
Ingredients:
• 1 3- to 4-pound chicken
• 1 large yellow onion, peeled and very thinly sliced
• 6 heads garlic, cloves separated, loose skin removed, skins left on
• 1/2 cup olive oil
• Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Directions:
1. Heat oven to 220 degrees. Lightly oil a sheet pan, spread onion slices in an even layer and roast until golden, crisp and dry. Cool, then chop into fine crumbs by hand (not in a processor).
2. While onions roast, toss garlic cloves with olive oil. Spread on a pan in a single layer and roast at 375 degrees until very tender, about 30 minutes. Cool, then squeeze the pulp from skins into a food processor and purée.
3. Pat chicken dry; season well with salt and pepper. Spread a thick layer of garlic purée over the chicken, then coat with onion crumbs.
4. Place chicken in the center of a roasting pan. Roast at 325 degrees until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees, about 1 hour (start checking early).
5. Let rest, uncovered, at least 15 minutes before carving.
Serving note: A quick sautéed mushroom medley pairs beautifully with the rich chicken. Wipe mushrooms with a damp cloth rather than washing — they absorb water and won’t brown. Browning equals flavor.

PRIVATE RAVENSWOOD ESTATE
ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NETTIE EINHORN ARCHITECTURAL MEDIA SERVICE AND SKYVIEW MEDIA
Spacious 5BR, 5.1BA with Palladian windows, spa primary suite, and an expansive deck with gazebo.
Welcome to Ravenswood, one of Basking Ridge’s most coveted enclaves with a Far Hills mailing address, stands a residence that blends presence and privacy. Reserved by the builder for its premier homesite, this custom, four-sided brick colonial sits on 3.5 acres bordered by mature trees and sweeping lawns. From dignified quoin corners to detailed millwork, every element reflects craftsmanship rarely found today.
The approach is understated, the impact immediate. Landscape lighting highlights curated hardscaping, and a broad drive leads to an entrance framed by symmetry and scale. Inside, a two-story foyer with a bespoke oak staircase opens to a double-height family room anchored by a gas fireplace and floor-to-ceiling Palladian windows. Ten-foot ceilings add air and openness, while thoughtful sightlines create a natural flow between spaces.
Designed for both performance and gathering, the kitchen features furniture-quality cabinetry, a substantial center island and professional-grade appliances. An adjoining breakfast room overlooks the grounds, bringing the outdoors into daily life. A first-floor guest suite provides privacy for visitors or extended family; upstairs, a separate wing offers a private retreat.
The primary suite is a sanctuary. A fireplace lends warmth, while an adjoining office and exercise room fit modern routines. Dual walk-in closets provide tailored storage, and the spa bath— featuring an oversized shower, jetted Kohler tub and dual vanities—rivals a luxury hotel. Additional bedrooms on this level are generous in scale for family or guests.
The finished lower level extends versatility with a third tier of living space, ideal for media, recreation or wine storage. Outdoors, the grounds set this estate apart: a 40-by-20-foot heated gunite pool with dual waterfalls, granite coping and Kool Decking forms the centerpiece of a resort-style setting. Expansive terraces, a gazebo and professional landscaping suit both quiet mornings and festive entertaining.
Beyond Ravenswood, the appeal continues. Basking Ridge offers nationally ranked schools, a strong sense of community and proximity to New York City—an uncommon mix of tranquility and accessibility. For buyers who value architectural integrity and lifestyle, this estate is a rare opportunity in one of New Jersey’s most desirable settings.

Begins with YOU A SEASON TO SEE THE UNSEEN
The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?
The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.
Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.
“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”
Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:
SCAN TO NOMINATE
“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”
Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:
“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”
Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.
This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.
“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”
Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.
This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

Tips on meal prepping for less stress
ARTICLE BY ALISON STANTON
Let’s face it: hosting Thanksgiving dinner can be stressful.
Between grocery shopping, house cleaning, cooking and baking, it’s no wonder the day devoted to giving thanks can feel a tad daunting.
Here’s some very welcome good news: whether this is your first holiday hosting rodeo or you’ve stuffed many a turkey over the years, you can knock out most of the Thanksgiving meal prep work in advance – some of it two weeks before the big day.
To make this year’s Thanksgiving meal easier and more enjoyable, consider the following timeline of tips.
2 WEEKS BEFORE
Create Your Thanksgiving Menu
• Print out the recipes you plan to use – this will be much easier than constantly tapping your phone to prevent the screen from going dark or scrolling when your hands are covered with flour or onions.
• Using your menu and printed out recipes as a guide, compose a complete shopping list.
• Double check your supply of herbs and spices to see what you have on hand –even the ones you are pretty sure you have enough of, like salt and pepper (this tip comes from personal experience!).
• Shop for all non-perishable and frozen food items. Basically, if it doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge, or if it doesn’t have a short shelf life, it’s going in the cart.
• Plan three easy and tasty dinners for the days leading up to Thanksgiving and purchase those ingredients during your shopping trip. Or plan at least one night of takeout. CONTINUED >
4-5 DAYS BEFORE
Clean & Organize, Buy Fresh Groceries
• Clean your home completely, enlisting family members to help. Then, as the big day approaches, you can touch up as needed.
• Finish your grocery shopping for fresh vegetables like potatoes, onions and carrots and other items not purchased earlier.
• Go through your fridge and toss any old, expired condiments, leftovers and mysterious food items that no one is eating. This will free up valuable real estate for your various dishes.
Prep Meals & Set the Table 2-3 DAYS BEFORE
• Wash and chop all veggies and place the prepped produce into plastic baggies or airtight food storage containers. If some recipes call for “minced onion” and others require “chopped onion,” label the bags accordingly.
• Set the table, and include the empty serving dishes. This will help you figure out ahead of time where the larger dishes can go (and if they will all fit!) Add Post-It notes to the empty dishes to remind you what will go in what. Use a clean sheet to cover everything and keep it all dust-free until Thursday. You can also do this for a buffet.
• Gather all needed serving spoons and other serving pieces.
• Pre-measure herbs and spices for your recipes and store them in labeled small plastic bags with the name of the dish they are for and what’s in the baggies. You can also do the same for any flour, sugar or other non-perishable ingredients you’ll use in your dishes.
Tidy, Prepare Dishes & Drinks 1 DAY BEFORE
• Do a quick clean and tidy around the home; for instance, run the vacuum and shine up the bathrooms.
• If you haven’t already done so, bake your pies, or, at the very least, prepare your pie dough. Wrap the dough in plastic and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to assemble and bake the pies.
• Make the mashed potatoes. Bonus tip: on Thanksgiving, put the potatoes into a slow cooker and heat them up using the “warm” setting.
• Prepare the gravy. If you have a second slow cooker, it too can be warmed up this way on Thanksgiving. This will also help free up pots, pans and burners on the stove!
• Set up a separate drink station where guests can help themselves or someone can serve them away from the kitchen. Stock it with glasses of different sizes, napkins, bottle and can openers and straws.
