LIFESTYLE LETTER

Exploring the Best of Summer—One Page at a Time

When you’re raising four daughters in Somerset County, summer doesn’t exactly mean rest—it means motion. From pool towels on every chair to flipflops mysteriously reappearing by the neighbor’s mailbox (true story—we have a local fox who likes to relocate our stuff), our house is in full summer mode. And honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Fourth of July is one of my favorite days of the year. There’s something magical about watching fire works with sun-kissed kids, ice cream-sticky fingers, and friends sharing beach blankets. It’s loud, it’s simple, and it’s the kind of moment that makes you grateful to call this place home.

This issue of Somerset Hills City Lifestyle is all about exploring. Whether you’re venturing far or rediscovering your own backyard, we’ve packed these pages with people, places and ideas to inspire curiosity and connection.

On page 20, Rachel Fuda of The Real Housewives of New Jersey reminds us that even amid a whirlwind of cameras, toddlers and teenagers, staying grounded in family and community is what matters most. Her story will resonate with anyone juggling the chaos of summer and the beauty of being present.

Turn to page 32 for our full recap of this year’s Mansion in May at Wildfair, where more than 22,000 visitors toured jaw-dropping interiors, gardens and fashion-forward design—all supporting a worthy cause. This historic Chester Township estate was reimagined by top local designers and landscape experts, with proceeds benefiting Morristown Medical Center’s Proton Therapy Center.

On page 46, meet Tracy and Jason Bruno of Bruno Design Associates. Their Chester-based design/build firm specializes in creating luxury backyard retreats, and their story—centered on family, passion and craftsmanship—is a must-read for anyone dreaming up their next outdoor project.

Then on page 18, explore the mission behind The Mira Shoppe, founded by Basking Ridge resident Farheen Qadir. Her artisan jewelry boutique blends global storytelling, women’s empowerment and stunning handcrafted pieces, all with local heart.

And don’t miss this month’s Readers’ Choice Awards! You voted for your favorites— from best ice cream parlor to top pool builder—and we’re revealing the winners inside. Turn to page 14 to see who made the list, and follow us on Instagram (@bridgewater _somerset_hills) for more community updates and upcoming categories.

Wherever summer takes you, I hope you explore joyfully, breathe deeply—and always pack extra snacks.

EMPOWERING WOMEN

The Mira Shoppe’s Journey

After two decades as a corporate executive in the chemical industry, Basking Ridge resident Farheen Qadir decided it was time to pursue a long-held dream—one sparked by frequent work trips to Mexico and a growing passion for artisan jewelry. In December 2023, she launched The Mira Shoppe, an online boutique featuring handcrafted sterling silver pieces, all made by women artisans across Latin America.

Qadir’s career included leadership roles at Colgate-Palmolive and BASF, where she supplied personal care giants with ingredients. But the climb to the top came with a cost. “There’s a lot of toxicity at the senior levels of large corporations,” she said. “I wanted something more meaningful.”

During her travels, Qadir discovered Mexico’s vibrant silver jewelry economy and was drawn to its craftsmanship. She envisioned a future where she could sell those pieces—and support the women behind them. That vision became The Mira Shoppe, a business with dual missions: offering unique jewelry and empowering women, from artisan to consumer.

“Even the fine jewelry industry is male-dominated,” Qadir explained. “I work extra hard to find women artisans and help them grow their businesses.” She sources from women in Mexico and Colombia—connections she found through determination, language skills, and local networks.

Qadir also dedicates a portion of profits to support girls’ education, something she credits with changing her own life. “Access to education is the foundation,” she said. “Supporting that is part of my legacy.”

Now a year in, she’s embracing the lessons of small business ownership. While online sales have thrived, vendor markets were hit-or-miss. Going forward, Qadir plans to focus on strategic partnerships with local boutiques as well.

Her efforts have resonated locally. “The community here really connects with the mission,” she said. “Women who’ve had successful careers understand how important it is to give back.”

Though she doesn’t design the pieces herself, Qadir is the driving force behind their reach—and their impact. “My strength is in building businesses,” she said. “And this one is about creating opportunities, telling stories, and helping women shine.”

The Mira Shoppe is based in Basking Ridge and ships across the U.S. and Canada. Learn more at themirashoppe.com

FAMILY COMES FIRST

Rachel Fuda on Balancing Motherhood and Reality TV Fame
The Fuda Family

For Rachel Fuda, star of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, fame isn’t the finish line—family is. While millions of Bravo fans know her for her polished style, quick wit, and reality TV presence, Fuda remains firmly grounded in her role at home.

“Being a mom is what defines me right now,” she shares. “This is a very temporary little-kid phase of life, and I’m trying to be as present as possible.”

That phase is a full one. Fuda and her husband, John, are raising four children, ranging from a newborn to a high school senior. Their dinner conversations span from college decisions to toddler tantrums—and somehow, she makes it all look seamless.

“I’m sending one son off to college and caring for a newborn at the same time,” she explains. “It’s full-circle chaos—but it’s beautiful.”

Fuda, who was born on Long Island and raised in Bergen County, now calls Franklin Lakes home. Staying close to her roots has always been important. “There’s something special about knowing who your kids go to school with, who your neighbors are. You don’t need to hang out every weekend, but it’s nice to be surrounded by familiar, good people.”

RACHEL FUDA - TV PERSONALITY

Beyond her role on television, she’s a businesswoman. Together with her husband, she recently launched Glam Studio Suites in Norwood and helps operate Valet King, a tri-state parking concierge service. The workload is hefty, but the Fuda’s are clear on what matters.

“We’ve always known what’s important—family, marriage, and doing right by people,” she notes.

That clarity has helped her navigate the whirlwind of reality TV without losing herself. When she joined RHONJ, her youngest daughter Giuliana was just eight weeks old. “It was wild,” she laughs. “But we had a family conversation before committing. I wanted my oldest, Jaiden, to be comfortable with it. I’m really big on boundaries.”

Jaiden, now a high school senior, embraced the opportunity—and even enjoys his own local fame. “He walks the boardwalk in Seaside Heights and gets stopped by girls asking for pictures. He’s loving it.”

Still, the public spotlight has its downsides, especially online. Like many reality stars, Fuda has had to set clear boundaries with social media.

“I’ve been in therapy for a long time, and I’m a big advocate for mental health. People will judge everything—from your parenting to the color of your shorts,” she says with a wry smile. “But I’ve learned the less you read, the better. Ignorance really is bliss.”

Support comes not only from within her home, but also from her Bravo circle. Melissa and Joe Gorga—fellow castmates have become close friends. The families connected through their sons, who played youth football together, and that connection quickly deepened.

As for the show, Fuda takes a measured approach. She’s grateful for the experiences—attending the VMAs, meeting Bravo fans at BravoCon—but she keeps her life in perspective.

“The show is secondary to me. My life doesn’t change whether I’m on or off it,” she affirms. “What I have in my real life is what matters most.”

Looking ahead, she’s starting to think about the next phase. “Right now, I’m in survival mode,” she laughs. “But once the kids are all in school, I’d love to do something for myself. Write a book, maybe launch something new—something that fills my soul.”

Her outlook is shaped by the long view of parenting. “Your kids need you in different ways as they grow. When they’re older, I know I’ll need something for me, too—something that’s just mine.”

Giving back is already part of her story. Diagnosed with arthritis at just four years old, she had both hips replaced by 18. Today, she works closely with the Arthritis Foundation, hosting events and raising awareness for young people living with the condition.

“There were no resources when I was 14, going through all that. I felt so different from everyone else,” she shares. “Now I try to be the support I didn’t have.”

Through it all—motherhood, business, TV—her values haven’t wavered. “John always says, ‘One hand washes the other, and two hands wash a face.’ That’s how New Jersey works. That’s how we work.”

For Fuda, staying grounded in what matters most—family, community, and authenticity—is the real key to navigating it all.

“WE’VE ALWAYS KNOWN WHAT’S IMPORTANT— FAMILY, MARRIAGE, AND DOING RIGHT BY PEOPLE.”RACHEL FUDA

Special Parent’s Night Out

AN EVENING OF JOY, RESPITE, AND COMMUNITY CONNECTION

This May, families across Northern New Jersey gathered for an unforgettable evening of joy, connection, and community at the 26th semi-annual Special Parent’s Night Out and Special Needs Carnival , hosted by Resurgent Church in Far Hills.

Organized by the Special Parents Organization, the event provided a much-needed evening of respite for parents and caregivers of children with disabilities. While parents enjoyed a complimentary dinner for two at local restaurants in Chester, Mendham, and Bedminster, their children — including siblings — were treated to a night filled with fun, laughter, and care.

With the support of qualified volunteers from local hospitals and schools, the children participated in a variety of activities, from pony rides, hayrides, bounce houses, and face painting to painting flowerpots and canvases. A hot-air balloon ride, live music, games, a game truck, and even a visit from a fire truck made the evening truly magical.

The event also drew support from local businesses and community members. “Supporting Special Parents is deeply personal to us,” says Candace Kerr, co-owner of Sunrise Cooling and Heating. “It’s about showing up for families in our community and letting them know they’re not alone.” A longtime advocate and Friend of Special Parents, Kerr was instrumental in bringing attention to the organization and its mission.

Held at Resurgent Church’s beautiful campus on Route 206, the event was carefully planned with safety and comfort in mind, limiting participation to the first 100 families to ensure every guest received personalized attention.

Steve Coutts, Co-Founder and Director of the Special Parents Organization, emphasizes the event’s ongoing mission: to create moments of joy, provide meaningful breaks for caregivers, and strengthen the bonds within the special needs community.

As the laughter and memories from May's event continue to resonate, families are already looking forward to the next celebration of togetherness and hope.

ZONED SPORTS ACADEMY SENDS 48 ATHLETES TO COLLEGE PROGRAMS AT 2025 SIGNING DAY

Signing Day Success

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ZONED SPORTS ACADEMY
“It’s a celebration of years of dedication, early mornings, late nights and sacrifice — not just by the athletes, but by their families as well.”

- Duke Baxter

Zoned Sports Academy proudly celebrated 48 high school athletes from northern and central New Jersey on March 6 during its annual Signing Day event, recognizing student-athletes who officially committed to continuing their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level.

“It is our ultimate goal to see our kids play collegiately, and we take pride in seeing so many of our student-athletes enter the next chapter in their academic and athletic careers,” says Duke Baxter, Zoned Sports Academy owner and former professional baseball player. “Some of these kids have trained with us for over 10 years, and we are incredibly proud to see them achieve their dreams.”

Since its founding 22 years ago, Zoned Sports Academy athletes have collectively earned more than $24 million in college scholarships. The athletes recognized at this year’s Signing Day represented a wide range of high schools, including Bridgewater-Raritan, Summit, The Hun School, Union Catholic, St. Thomas Aquinas, North Hunterdon, Scotch Plains-Fanwood, Governor Livingston, Gill St. Bernard’s, Immaculata, Montgomery, Hillsborough, Pingry, Seton Hall Prep, Easton, South Plainfield, Freedom, Randolph, Oratory Prep, Ridge, Bernardsville, Hunterdon Central, Mount Saint Mary and North Plainfield.

These student-athletes will continue their academic and athletic journeys at many of the nation’s top colleges and universities, including the University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown University, Villanova University, Pepperdine University, Purdue University, Lehigh University, Boston College, Stevens Institute of Technology, Hofstra University, The College of New Jersey, Rutgers University and others.

During the ceremony, each athlete walked the “turf carpet,” signed their commitment certificate, and received a personalized jersey as a memento of their achievement. The event was filled with energy and emotion, as proud families, coaches and teammates gathered to celebrate this significant milestone.

“This is one of our favorite days of the year,” Baxter shares. “It’s a celebration of years of dedication, early mornings, late nights and sacrifice — not just by the athletes, but by their families as well. It’s incredibly rewarding to see it all pay off.”

For Zoned Sports Academy, the 2025 Signing Day was more than a ceremony — it was a tribute to perseverance, growth and future success. As Baxter looks ahead, he remains committed to shaping the next generation of student-athletes ready to excel on and off the field.

EXPLORE the 2025 MANSION in May

We had the chance to experience this year’s Mansion in May up close—and trust us, Wildfair was worth the hype.

The gates to this historic Chester Township estate opened to the public on May 1, kicking off one of New Jersey’s most anticipated design events. By the time the last guest walked through at the end of the month, more than 22,000 visitors had explored the jaw-dropping interiors and gardens reimagined by some of the region’s most talented designers.

This year’s Mansion in May showhouse was held at Wildfair, a picturesque property originally transformed into a country estate in 1934 by Elizabeth and Harry Bowly Hollins III. Set on the grounds of a 220-year-old former mill and farm, the home features fieldstone walls, wide bay windows, French doors, and peaceful pond views. Designed by the renowned architectural firm Willing, Sims & Talbutt, the estate exemplifies timeless Colonial Revival elegance.

Each room in the mansion was dramatically reinterpreted by professional interior designers, with no two spaces alike. From bold wallpaper to custom furnishings and curated artwork, the 2025 edition of Mansion in May pushed creative boundaries while respecting the home’s classic bones.

A Stunning Tour of Wildfair in Chester

One standout space was a whimsical, color-filled bedroom by Hillary Cohen of HCO Interiors

“We designed an enchanting space filled with color, pattern, and room for self-expression to bring a young girl’s dream room to life,” said Cohen. “A custom corner banquette provides the perfect spot to read or chat with friends, while decorative shelving above displays artwork and travel mementos. A lilac linen canopy drapes over the striped, pink velvet bed, creating a luxurious escape. Every design detail, from the hidden closet vanity to the dimensional art installation leading to the ensuite, adds a touch of playfulness and delight to the room.”

The outdoor spaces were equally stunning. Landscape designers reimagined Wildfair’s gardens, walkways, and terraces, offering visitors ideas for everything from container plantings to sprawling estate grounds. Every turn offered inspiration.

A standout addition this year was Fashion at the Mansion, a lively new feature celebrating style in all its forms. From volunteer uniforms with flair to visitors arriving in garden-party chic, fashion became an integral part of the experience. Even the shuttle buses took part in the fun, proving that no detail was overlooked.

Mansion in May is more than just a celebration of great design—it’s a philanthropic powerhouse. Hosted by the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center (WAMMC), the event serves as the organization’s flagship fundraiser. Proceeds from this year’s event support the development of the Proton Therapy Center at Morristown Medical Center, which will bring cutting-edge cancer treatment to patients across the region.

The month-long event is powered by nearly 1,000 volunteers and supported by over 150 interior and landscape designers, craftspeople, and corporate sponsors. Their donated time and talent make this immersive experience possible—and ensure that every dollar raised goes further.

Tickets for general admission were available throughout May, with proceeds going directly to WAMMC’s fundraising goals. Visitors could also enhance their visit by shopping in the on-site boutiques, enjoying refreshments in the café, and purchasing raffle tickets for a range of luxury prizes.

Whether you came for the interiors, the gardens, the fashion, or simply to support a good cause, Wildfair delivered on every front. It was a place where creativity met community, where luxury met legacy—and where every step through the halls helped build a better future for patients and families in New Jersey.

Branzino for Heroes

SAUTÉED LEMON GARLIC BRANZINO WITH WARM TOMATO SALAD OVER BABY ARUGULA

If you’ve ever had the desire to be bathed in the unfettered sunshine of your family’s sincerest adoration, then buy them a puppy. But if you just want them to love you a little more, make this dish and enjoy the warm embers of their gratitude. It’s that easy.

Metropolitan Seafood & Gourmet

Upscale shop selling fresh seafood at the counter along with hummus, craft breads & local cheeses. 1320 US-22, Lebanon | metroseafood.com | Phone: (908) 840-4332

INGREDIENTS:

• 1½ to 2 pounds of Branzino fillet (or use Sea Bass, Flounder, or even Red Snapper)

• 3 tablespoons olive oil, separated

• 2 teaspoons lemon juice, plus the juice of one lemon

• ½ teaspoon lemon zest

• 2 large cloves garlic, crushed and finely minced, divided

• 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh rosemary

• Salt and pepper

• Flour for dusting

• ½ to 1 teaspoon Bomba (Calabrian chili paste)

• ½ cup dry white wine

• 1 pint grape tomatoes, halved

• 4 handfuls baby arugula

DIRECTIONS:

1. Season the Branzino fillets generously on both sides.

2. In a glass pie plate, whisk together 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, lemon zest, half the garlic, and rosemary. Add the fillets, turn to coat, and refrigerate for 20 minutes, flipping once.

3. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Remove fillets from marinade and dredge lightly in flour, shaking off excess.

4. Sear fillets skin-side down for 4 minutes or until golden and crisp. Flip and cook another 3 minutes, or until just cooked through. Transfer to a warm platter.

5. In the same pan, add remaining olive oil, then sauté the rest of the garlic and Bomba for 30 seconds. Pour in the wine and simmer until reduced by half. Add tomatoes and heat through. Stir in lemon juice and season to taste. 6. To serve, divide baby arugula among four plates, top with fish, and spoon the warm tomato mixture over. Pour any extra juices from the platter into the pan, swirl, and drizzle over everything.

Son of a gun! I promised myself I wouldn’t cry today—but then I pictured the new puppy licking my face… sob, sniff, sniff… whew. I gotta go.

BRUNO DESIGN ASSOCIATES BLENDS LIFESTYLE, LANDSCAPE, AND LASTING CONNECTIONS IN THE HEART OF SOMERSET HILLS.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY LIZ POLOMY HAVANA PHOTOGRAPHY
Jason and Tracy Bruno

When Somerset Hills City Lifestyle caught up with Tracy and Jason Bruno of Bruno Design Associates in Chester earlier this spring, life was buzzing with excitement. Their family was celebrating a trio of academic milestones: their daughter, Alyssa, was graduating from Boston College, while their sons, Nicholas and Dominic, were graduating from West Morris Mendham High School and Black River Middle School, respectively.

“It’s been a little hectic, but in the best way,” Tracy said with a laugh. “It really feels like the end of some big chapters and the beginning of exciting new ones.”

Through it all, one thing remains steady for the Bruno family: a strong sense of community.

“We moved to the Somerset Hills area for the lifestyle, the schools, and the open space,” Tracy says. “Over the years, the friendships we’ve made and the roots we’ve established have given us such a deep appreciation for where we live.”

Tracy and Jason met as students at Delaware Valley University in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, both pursuing degrees in Ornamental Horticulture and Environmental Design. After gaining experience in the industry and raising their young family, they made the move to Chester in 2012.

“Jason was working with a landscape company at the time, and I was a stay-at-home mom,” Tracy recalls. “That’s when I decided to launch my own business, and everything grew from there.”

Today, Bruno Design Associates is a flourishing design/build firm known for crafting high-end outdoor environments across Morris and Somerset counties. The firm’s projects range from custom pools and spas to masonry, lighting, pergolas, fencing, irrigation, and comprehensive landscape design.

“Our niche is high-end residential design/ build,” Jason explains. “We focus on larger backyard transformations—master planning outdoor spaces that function beautifully and look stunning. The goal is to take all the moving parts of a complex project and bring them together under one umbrella.”

Jason holds the Certified Building Professional (CBP) and Tracy holds the Certified Master Pool Builder and Design Professional (MCBP) designation from the Pool and Hot Tub Alliance—a credential earned by only a small number of professionals worldwide. This expertise supports their reputation for seamless execution and high-caliber results.

The couple emphasizes communication and transparency at every stage. “We begin with a complimentary in-home consultation,” Jason says. “From there, we explore initial ideas and provide digital 3D models that help the client visualize their finished space.”

Budgeting, phasing, sequencing, and code compliance are all covered well before construction begins. “We make sure there are no surprises,” Tracy adds. “It’s a blend of art, engineering, and trust.”

The Brunos also recognize that outdoor living has taken on new importance for homeowners. “We’re seeing more interest than ever in private backyard retreats,” Jason says. “Covered structures with lighting, fans, fireplaces, TVs, and full kitchens are hugely popular.”

But for the Brunos, outdoor living isn’t just their business—it’s their way of life. A close-knit, sports-loving family, they spend much of their time outdoors with their two Goldendoodles, Finley and Theo.

“We love experiencing nature together as a family,” Tracy says. “Our kids are very active in sports, and we sponsor and volunteer with local teams as much as we can.”

As their family grows and the business expands, their love for the community remains unwavering.

“We absolutely love where we live and the people we serve,” Tracy says. “It’s incredibly rewarding to work with clients who reflect the joy and warmth of this area.”

Real talk!

After a five year absence, it may be back.

We’ve been forecasting since 2020 that our local market continues to be one of shorter supply and higher demand, with no real seasonality such as a “Spring” market. Is 2025 the year that changes?

Since January 1 , 86 single family homes have been listed in Bernards Township Only 35 homes were listed in the first quarter, with the remaining 51 listed between April 1 and May 24 (press time) This correlates more closely to a traditional Spring market See chart below for details

st Demand is still outpacing supply, with many homes receiving offers the first weekend on the market, followed by under contract status within17 days. Unlike the national outlook, local demand remains steady.

Yet, not all homes are having the same experience.

13 homes have experienced more than 30 days on market this year Price and condition of home are key factors that contribute to whether a home will sell briskly or experience greater days on market External factors such as interest rates, economic outlook, and financial security are also important considerations.
