Happy 10-Year Anniversary, SoFu Lifestyle!

Hey SoFu! As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of SoFu Lifestyle Magazine, I find myself reflecting on the journey that has brought us here—a decade of storytelling, style, culture, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. This milestone is not just a testament to our growth, but to the incredible community of readers, partners, and visionaries who have made this journey possible: Shaheedah Hill, who had the original vision to create the magazine, South Fulton Lifestyle SFL  was one month old when she entrusted it to Donald Hawkins (who called and asked if I wanted to buy it) and me.  Thank you to the visionaries like Dyan Matthews and Michael Hightower, Mayors Vince Williams and Bill Edwards, who bought into the vision early, and Dr. RJ Verwayne (who graced the very first cover with her family) and Atlanta’s own Shaunya Chavis, who believed in us.

Kudos to our staff, some of whom have been here almost since the beginning like our Copy Editor Tracy Marcynzsyn, or Jolene Freeman, who started as a writer almost ten years ago, and is now a professor, speaker, and entrepreneur with her own company that places ads in the magazine! And I can't forget our amazing Creative Director Patrick T. Cooper!

To our cherished readers: Thank you for embracing our vision, for turning our pages with anticipation, and for not allowing the eight cities of SoFu to be sullied by incorrect perceptions of the area.  Thank you to those who stop me and say, “I read your magazine every month, front to back!”

Shout out to our Legacy Advertisers like Legend Roofing, Prestige Healthcare and GreyStone, who have 10 years under their belt of entrusting their advertising dollars to us.

But honestly, at the heart of this is Erikka Searles Mitchell, our editor. She is the embodiment of loyalty, consistency, patience, and greatness. Through every challenge and triumph, her dedication has been a guiding force, ensuring that SoFu Lifestyle remains a beacon of inspiration and sophistication. Her passion and perseverance help shape this publication and I am forever grateful.  You see me in the streets, but it’s Erikka Searles Mitchell and her team that put this behemoth in front of you every month for the last ten years.  If you’re reading this, email her at emitchell@citylifestyle.com and say “Thank you!”   I'd love to flood her inbox!

This anniversary is not just about the past—it’s about the future we are building together, a Sardanapalian adventure for you to explore every month.  With Erikka’s spirit as a foundation, we step into the next chapter with even greater ambition, elegance, and purpose.

Here’s to 10 years of SoFu Lifestyle magazine—and to many more.  And remember, you’re the best at what you do; but, if you don’t believe it, no one else will either.

TIDY IS TRENDY

NEAT ORGANIZATION SOLUTIONS BEYOND THE BEDROOM CLOSET.

Organizing is necessary and unavoidable and for some, impossible.

I spend hours tidying and reorganizing my bedroom closet each spring and the laundry room gets a makeover once a year before the kids come home from college (and again when they leave). I long for shelving in the garage dedicated to my outdoor gear, for cubbies in my office to hide my knitting and crafts, and a guest room that isn’t all bed and pillows.

Turning to the experts in custom organization and innovative designs for the home, Closets By Design, I found the options enticing and the one-on-one design services essential. The company, family owned and operated, provides help every step of the way with solutions for every room of the house, not just closets.

“At Closets by Design, we understand that every home is unique, which is why our design process is tailored specifically to your individual needs and preferences. From the moment you schedule your no-obligation consultation, our dedicated team is here to guide you every step of the way,” says owner and operator, Stephanie Parmer.

Set an appointment online or by phone and a professional designer will come directly to your home bringing the showroom experience to your doorstep. “Together, you’ll collaborate to create a personalized design that maximizes your space and fits your budget. Once the perfect layout is established, your designer will coordinate the installation date, ensuring a seamless transition from vision to reality,” Stephanie explains.

On installation day, a highly trained installer will arrive with all the necessary materials to complete your project—typically in just one day. Dreamy!

Since its inception in 1982, Closets By Design has carved a niche as a trailblazer in home organization, and today one of their latest focuses has been on transforming garages into efficient spaces that reflect the needs and lifestyle of the homeowner. Think sleek cabinetry, versatile shelving systems, tools neatly organized on wall-mounted racks, sports gear tucked away in custom cabinets, and dedicated spaces for hobby supplies. The company offers garage flooring options too, durable and easy to maintain, giving your space a polished look.

Indoors, a standout trend is in home office design with the rise of custom furniture. These versatile pieces can be configured to fit any space, allowing you to create a customized workstation that adapts to your needs. Think vertical storage options like shelves and pegboards that utilize wall space effectively, as well as drawers that help you find what you need quickly along

with storage cubes and baskets for keeping supplies neatly tucked away while adding a decorative touch.

When we think of home design, laundry rooms often take a backseat. Yet, this hardworking area deserves just as much attention with custom cabinets in on-trend colors or finishes with ample workspace for sorting, folding, and ironing clothes. Countertops— made from durable materials like quartz or granite— that are both functional and appealing are paired with stylish backsplashes for a cohesive look that transforms your laundry area into a mini oasis of organization. Include pull-out hampers, dedicated areas for sorting clothes by color or fabric type, and a foldable ironing board that tucks away neatly when not in use.

My guest room is also my office and I am pining for a Murphy bed from Closets By Design. Their wallbeds are designed to fold up against the wall when not in use, with a user-friendly mechanism, engineered to be lightweight yet sturdy; while they support a standard mattress.

“We’re passionate about transforming overlooked spaces into beautiful, functional areas that you’ll enjoy using,” says Stephanie. “We offer a wide spectrum of finishing options, whether you prefer the warm, natural look of wood or the sleek, contemporary feel of laminate finishes. Each material is crafted for durability while providing an elegant aesthetic that can elevate any room.”

Her team understands every home has unique needs and styles, and they are passionate about providing tailored solutions that enhance both functionality and aesthetics, transforming your spaces into beautifully organized havens.

Kimberley Emory Raises Awareness for Ovarian Cancer
ARTICLE BY SEAN O'KEEFE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOLIE LOREN AND MICHELLE WALKER

Kimberley Emory is the president of the Board of Directors of the Cancer Alliance. She was diagnosed in 2006 at stage 2C.

Dedicated to raising awareness about ovarian cancer’s symptoms, risks, and treatments, Kimberly volunteers at health fairs, lunch-andlearns, and through GOCA’s Survivors Teaching Students program. Named an Advocate Leader for the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance, Kimberly recently authored her autobiography, Pieces of Me: Perfectly Imperfect. The Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) organizes impactful events to raise awareness, support survivors, and fund educational initiatives in the fight against ovarian cancer.

The annual Teal Trot 5K, September 20th at Chastain Park, unites families, friends, and advocates to honor their survivor community while remembering those who have passed from the disease. The Teal to Heal Fashion Show, November 13th at Lenox Square Mall, celebrates survivors as well as families and caregivers. Both events are designed to highlight our survivors’ stories and to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.

GOCA’s flagship fundraiser, the Shaken, Not Stirred Gala, now in its 13th year, is scheduled for March 8th at the Georgia Aquarium. This elegant fundraising evening features The Celebrity All Star Band, DJ Angelo Ferraro, incredible silent and live auctions, and, most importantly, moving survivor stories offering insight into their personal ovarian cancer journey.

Les Dames d’Escoffier International (LDEI) – Atlanta Chapter, in celebration of its 10th anniversary of partnership with GOCA, will curate an exceptional menu in honor of Dame Barbara Petit, showcasing their generosity and commitment to the cause. Proceeds from the gala support GOCA’s critical education and awareness initiatives. In addition to these signature events, GOCA hosts a variety of outreach programs, survivor luncheons, and educational events. These include health fairs, corporate seminars, and community initiatives designed to spread awareness of ovarian cancer’s signs and symptoms, leading to earlier detection and better outcomes. GOCA’s events not only raise funds but foster a sense of community among survivors and advocates. Participants are empowered to take action, share their knowledge, and support the organization’s mission of saving lives and improving the quality of life for women affected by this disease. Through these efforts, GOCA continues to make a meaningful impact across Georgia, championing awareness and providing vital resources for these courageous women. Sponsoring and supporting GOCA is a meaningful way to make a difference in the fight against ovarian cancer. Corporate and individual sponsorships help fund vital programs, including community education, early detection initiatives, and survivor support services. Sponsors gain valuable exposure through GOCA’s signature events, while demonstrating a commitment to women’s health. By partnering with GOCA, supporters empower the organization to raise awareness, save lives through early detection, and improve the quality of life for ovarian cancer survivors across Georgia.

Association of St. Augustine Alumni, Atlanta Chapter Presents 20th Annual Mardi Gras Ball Honoring Marc Morial

On January 25th, the Association of St. Augustine Alumni Atlanta Chapter (ASAAA) proudly celebrated its 20th annual Mardi Gras Ball (MGB), marking 2 decades of fellowship, fundraising, and unwavering community support. Held at the Georgia International Convention Center (GICC), this milestone event brought together alumni, supporters, and distinguished guests to honor the legacy of St. Augustine High School and its transformative impact on young men in New Orleans. The Association of St. Augustine Alumni comprises a dynamic group of distinguished men who graduated from St. Augustine High School in New Orleans, Louisiana. Their mission is to come together for the exclusive purpose of raising money and providing resources to help support education, particularly the educational efforts of St. Augustine High School, located in their hometown of New Orleans.

ASAAA members are all from New Orleans. However, they have made Atlanta their home, forming a strong, vibrant community dedicated to giving back. Their commitment to supporting education and fostering brotherhood continues to thrive in their adopted city.

This year’s Mardi Gras Ball was graced by the presence of the Honorable Marc Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League, who served as the Grand Marshal. His wife, Michelle Miller, an award-winning

journalist and co-host of “CBS Saturday Morning,” accompanied him. Their participation added prestige to an evening celebrating education, community, and tradition. The event was hosted by Tom Jones, a well-respected reporter from WSB-TV, who ensured the evening was both engaging and memorable.

Since its humble beginnings in 2005 with just 100 guests at The Hall on Ralph David Abernathy Blvd., the MGB has grown significantly. By 2007, the event moved to the Kappa Omega Center, allowing an expanded audience of 450 guests. In 2011, thanks to the invaluable support of Mercedes Miller, then assistant director of the GICC, the ball found its long-term home at this premier venue, where it has flourished for 14 years.

The success of the Mardi Gras Ball is a testament to the dedicated leadership of ASAAA members, particularly the four chairmen who have guided its growth over the years: Lucien Parfaite, Oyd Craddock, Hal Paisant, and Rod Batiste. Alongside Vernon Martin, Jr., and an incredible team of volunteers, they have worked tirelessly

to make this event a premier social and fundraising occasion.

This Mardi Gras Ball is more than just a night of celebration. It is ASAAA’s signature fundraiser, supporting three major commitments to St. Augustine High School: the student scholarship endowment, financial aid assistance, and the annual college visit trip to Atlanta for St. Augustine seniors. This initiative allows students to tour Atlanta-area colleges and universities while fostering mentorship through a partnership with Morehouse College seniors. To date, ASAAA has raised over $800,000 to give back to the school.

In addition to the Mardi Gras Ball, ASAAA hosts an annual golf tournament and a white party, further strengthening their fundraising efforts and community engagement.

ASAAA extends its deepest gratitude to the South Fulton community, dedicated sponsors, and all who have contributed to the success of the Mardi Gras Ball over the past 2 decades. “South Fulton has been a tremendous supporter of our mission, and we are incredibly grateful for their continuous support,” said Deron Mobley, the current president of ASAAA and an 18-year resident of South Fulton. “Your generosity has made a lasting impact on the students of St. Augustine High School, ensuring that the legacy of excellence, leadership, and brotherhood continues for generations to come.”

HONORING JOHN LEWIS WITH THE JOHN AND LILLIAN MILES LEWIS FOUNDATION

Remembering Hometown Heroes

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY JOHN AND LILLIAN MILES LEWIS FOUNDATION

March 7 marks the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. The John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation, working with the City of Selma, the Historic Tabernacle Baptist Church Legacy Foundation, and the National Park Service, with the support of Wells Fargo installed two commemorative plaques at the Edmund Pettus Bridge. These plaques trace the Voting Rights journey in Selma from the establishment of the NAACP there in 1918 through Selma to Montgomery March to the election of Barack Obama as the first Black president in 2008 and the election of Kamala Harris as the first Black/Asian American vice president in 2020.

Throughout the year, the Foundation is celebrating what would have been Congressman John Lewis’ 85th birthday. In January, they worked with Minecraft Education to relaunch “Lessons in Good Trouble,” a learning experience to teach young people about Good Trouble. In February, they launched the #JohnLewisSelfie campaign encouraging people to post pictures with John Lewis (or pictures with his books, buildings named after him, murals of him, etc.) to celebrate his birthday (February 21). In June, they will partner with the Theatrical Outfit to stage a hip hop musical about John Lewis’ life, “Young John Lewis.”

In 2025, work on the digitization of Rep. John Lewis’ congressional archives will start in earnest, with a goal of making his congressional papers available to historians, students, and admirers for generations to come. Their signature program for 2025 will be a high school civic engagement and education initiative with commitments from several area school districts building on a 2024 pilot project with Drew Charter School. By the end of the year, they will also give out the first round of Good Troublemaker Neighborhood Grants and Scholarships.

As Congressman John Lewis neared the end of his seventh decade of life, he began to consider what gifts he wanted to leave to the world. He tasked three of his and his wife’s friends with the assignment of launching what became the John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation. Incorporated in 2017, the Foundation has at its heart and soul the spirits of John and Lillian Lewis and their passion for learning, engaging, and living God’s purposes for one’s life.

More information about their work can be found at JLMLF.org.

Leaders in our SoFu Community Who are Making a Difference

SOFU CHANGEMAKERS 2025

Axel Adam’s love for South Fulton (SoFu area) is embedded in his hope and desire for the area to be cherished and respected by the citizens who live here and those who do not. SoFu has enormous potential for growth, and opportunities in the areas of Real Estate, Housing, Business, and Education. Eyes are upon SoFu and our leaders, and citizens must demand the same respect and attention given to the north side of the city. The playing field is not level and seems as though we pay more for less.

“I find that impact is measured by making a difference in the minds of the people you serve, work or live with. I would hope that my work in the areas of Civil Rights, Corporate and nonprofit/faith-based organizations has had an impact. Speaking truth to power, standing firm on what is right even if it is not popular, and walking in my faith and not by sight…tends to give me a sense of accomplishment that I find is impactful to me.”

As a nationally respected and distinguished healthcare and public health leader, educator, and community advocate, Dr. Yolanda Wimberly brings a dynamic vision to her position as senior vice president and Chief Health Equity Officer at Grady Health System. INNOVATION MEETS

ARTISTRY

Kitchen design has entered a transformative era, where innovation meets artistry to create spaces that are not only functional but also personal and sustainable. With advancements in technology, materials and craftsmanship, today’s kitchens are tailored to meet the evolving needs and tastes of homeowners.

According to interior designer Laura McCroskey, kitchens today are about more than just cooking—they’re an expression of personal lifestyle.

“Kitchen design has entered an exciting time where the possibilities feel limitless,” says McCroskey. “For me, the design process starts before lines are ever drawn on a construction document. I believe in creating spaces that enhance life, both functionally and aesthetically. The design process begins with a discussion about what a space needs to do, and what aesthetic will bring a spark to the homeowner. I also firmly believe that when

PHOTOGRAPHY BY NATE SHEETS

THE HEART OF THE HOME

designing a kitchen, one should walk out a recipe to make sure everything is in the right place to suit one’s lifestyle. Cooking zones are imperative to a well-designed kitchen.”

Modern kitchens emphasize zoning, or the creation of dedicated areas for preparation, cooking and storage, to enhance workflow and functionality. These zones not only improve efficiency but also contribute to a cohesive and visually appealing aesthetic.

Cutting-edge rendering software, utilizing technology similar to that used in gaming, allows homeowners to visualize their dream kitchens in hyper-realistic detail. While these tools inspire creativity, McCroskey advises balancing ambitious ideas with practical implementation to achieve the best results.

Technology, sustainability and customization are driving the revolution in kitchen design. Advanced appliances are at the forefront, enhancing convenience while aligning with a growing emphasis on eco-friendliness.

“From vacuum-sealing drawers that preserve food and reduce waste to smart appliances controlled by your phone, the emphasis is on efficiency and sustainability. Functional storage built seamlessly into marble countertops and oversized workstation sinks are making daily tasks easier and more enjoyable. Thoughtful features like composting

compartments and advanced food preservation methods reflect a broader effort to minimize waste and reduce environmental impact.”

Custom cabinetry that maximizes every inch of space minimizes waste while optimizing functionality.

“Forget the limits of traditional cabinetry. Blind corners, tiny nooks and hidden areas are now designed to maximize storage. Automated drawers and pop-up outlets are becoming increasingly common, marrying convenience with sleek aesthetics.”

Design trends have also evolved, becoming more flexible to reflect individual tastes.

“While white kitchens remain timeless and black adds drama, bleached woods continue to be popular. Style trends are no longer as rigid—whether you prefer modern, transitional, or traditional designs, you can create a kitchen tailored to your unique vision. There’s no limit to what you can achieve with today’s tools and technologies. The goal is to create spaces that resonate deeply with the people who live in them.”

The kitchen is the heart of every home and represents a space of endless possibility. Whether your aesthetic leans modern, farmhouse or somewhere in between, the tools and technologies available today make it easier than ever to bring your vision to life.

Dinner at The Grill Room also makes for family time or a romantic eve—with touches such as a sommelier providing suggestions for wines that will best accompany your meal, be it salmon, scallops, or filet mignon. As you make your way around the property, take in a collection of sculptures, paintings, and furnishings. Featuring a $12 million collection of museum-quality art, The Windsor Court showcases works dating back to the 17th century and depicting the Windsor Castle and life of British royalty.

When you’re ready to wind down in the evening, get in a late-day swim or just relax by the rooftop pool. You’ll also want to be sure to take in some live music performed nightly in the Polo Club Lounge.

From music to dining to British high society in the Big Easy, you’ll find all the makings for honoring your relationship with your special someone or getting away with loved ones all within reach at The Windsor Court.
