Style Issue
Uniquely Snohomish
September is the month we celebrate Style and the aesthetic preferences that make each one of us even more unique. While not confined to what we wear, a person’s style is most evident in how they present themselves but also includes other areas we well. How we decorate our homes, the vehicle we choose to drive, the music we listen to as well as how we carry ourselves, all contribute to a comprehensive style and regardless of whether you prefer functional utility, casual comfort, or contemporary chic, Snohomish welcomes you and your style.
Within these pages you’ll find style represented in a variety of ways and by style we don’t mean to infer only what you see on the outside but an overall representation of how some locals add character and beauty to the overall approachability we see every day in our community.
Snohomish is known for its thriving boutique retailers, and each has a unique style that draws visitors from around the Puget Sound region. Find a list of those shops in this issue coupled with a brief introduction to a few. We encourage you to visit each, introduce yourself, and learn how to add to your wardrobe choices.
Maybe you’re looking for a group of like-minded people who will encourage you personally and/or professionally. Read about one such organization whose roots start right here but have grown to attract the attention of several, more regional experts in style, work-life balance, professional coaching, and organization.
Meet an innovator and storyteller on the West Coast whose history inspires all who know her. With the courage and grit necessary to launch her own brand within a luxury category already occupied by household names such as Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci, and Dior, an accomplished designer, with roots in Washington shares her insights and offers a glimpse of what inspires her.
Finally, enjoy the feature article about Shannon Beauclair, the local internationally decorated portrait photographer whose work and contributions elevate and reflect her client’s individual style with beauty and elegance. We hope you enjoy this issue and find inspiration that enhances and elevates your own style.

BLOS
Creating Community over Competition
When Jessica Chavez, a Lake Stevens mom of four with a keen eye for design, became interested in starting her own interior decorating business, she wasn’t sure where to begin. It was the summer of 2021 and people were still wary of getting together in person, but Chavez took a leap of faith and posted on her local moms Facebook page, offering a backyard dinner to anyone who would like to connect, network, and talk business.
“Twelve ladies showed up and it went really well,” Chavez said. “There were giggles and tears, celebration and inspiration, community and networking. It was apparent that the time had come where humans were ready to be together again.”
Unknowingly to Chavez, this spontaneous desire for growth and connection would lead to the beginning of BLOS, or Business Ladies of Society. While Chavez loved everything about that initial dinner in her yard, from the planning to the decorating to the hosting, she had no intention of doing it again. But after casually uploading some photos of the night, women chimed in, asking when they could expect the next get-together.
“I decided to do a second event and it was also great,” Chavez said. “So one event turned into two, two turned into three…and it’s just kept going from there.”
For the past three years, BLOS has focused on providing women in business with community and connection through various networking events and opportunities, ones that are always fun and engaging. In May, BLOS members learned how to create their own charcuterie boards from Smash Box Curated Grazing. Later in the summer, they celebrated BLOS’ three-year anniversary with a Flamingo Glam Birthday Bash. At these events, women within the organization are given the opportunity to share or showcase their talents while simultaneously marketing their business.
“Many women join because they know they’re coming to be with like-minded women, but I don’t think that’s why people stay,” Chavez said. “There is a comradery that comes with it. We are investing in each other’s lives.”
BLOS ISN ’T ABOUT ME ORWHAT I DO, IT WOMEN G ETTING THEIRBUSINESSES RE
BLOS’ biggest event is their annual conference, hosting more than 150 women from all over the region. This year’s conference will be held at Hotel Indigo, Everett Waterfront from September 28-29.
The theme is “powHER up” and features two days of networking, inspirational presentations, interactive workshops, vendors, and more. The keynote speakers will be Ellen Yin, who is Mrs. Oregon 2024, host of Top 10 Business Podcast “Cubicle to CEO” and Miracle Olantunji, owner of the women’s wellness community “Crunch & Brunch” and author of “Purpose: How to Live and Lead with Impact.”
Attendees will also get to choose from three breakout sessions featuring a talk from Erin Ennis, owner of Energy Exteriors NW, titled “ Thriving Together: Community and Resources for Women Entrepreneurs ” focusing on small business administration, grant opportunities, and different
business associations, a course from Moni Giles, owner of Evolve with Moni LLC, titled “No Ugly Friends: Attracting R.A.R.E Friends That Don’t Frustrate Your Future ,” in which you’ll learn how to retain friendships and relationships that support and grow your business, and a session from Megan Gillespie, founder of Olympia Boss Society, titled “Stepping Into Your Role as CEO ” where she’ll explain why energy is key to productivity and ways to maximize it, along with strategic task prioritization and delegation and how to discover the kind of CEO you want to be.
Chavez said this event is not what women normally think of when they think of a business conference, explaining there’s no reason to underestimate Snohomish County when it comes to a large networking event. Her goal is to bring the same high level of energy that big city conferences offer while staying true to Snohomish’s hometown feel.
“This is not your mama’s business conference,” said Chavez. “It’s a whole experience, and no detail is overlooked.”
Those details, combined with the opportunity to encourage the women in her community, are what Chavez thrives on. Growing up as a cheerleader and then going on to coach her own daughter, Chavez explained that the whole emphasis of cheerleading is to be a team player and support the people around you – she views her role now the same way.
“BLOS isn’t about me or what I do,” Chavez said. “It’s about women getting their businesses recognized, giving them an opportunity to showcase what they do, their skills, and their strengths. BLOS is a place where you show up as your authentic self, help one another, and focus on community and connection over competition.”

AWARD WINNING STYLE
Photographer Shannon Beauclair
A JOURNEY OF RESILIENCE AND TRANSFORMATION
Daughter, sister, wife, mother, cancer survivor, and award-winning portrait photographer. These words offer a glimpse into the amazing life of Shannon Beauclair. In short, her story is one of loss, grit, sacrifice, and determination combined with character, passion, grace, and love for creativity resulting in stunning portraits of beauty, strength, and elegance.
Shannon is one of four daughters who lost their mother to breast cancer when she was three years old. Regardless of this tragedy, her personality proved to be well suited for recognizing what excellence looked like, and as a result, she quickly excelled in school, dance, and gymnastics.
Throughout her youth storytelling was a gift given to Shannon by her father. Starting with her grandmother, capturing memories in photographs has a long history with Shannon and allowed her to remain connected to the memory of her mom. Throughout her early years, her dad and close family members would give photographs of Shannon’s mom to her and her sisters on special occasions and these became “prized possessions”. Later in life, Shannon watched as her dad was always the one with the camera, capturing his daughters as they were growing up, participating in their sporting events, not knowing fully the influence he was having on Shannon. These special photographs along with the influence of her dad remain beloved artifacts and provide the inspiration for the art which now emanates from Shannon Beauclair Portrait Photography.
Her early career choices led to roles as a salesperson, operations specialist, project manager, and ultimately a corporate aeronautics and technology component buyer, a position traditionally held by men. Within companies mainly comprised of bright and highly educated engineers, Shannon excelled
because she was willing to employ the same ethic she learned as a youngster - work harder, longer, and more efficiently than anyone else to earn the respect and trust of those more senior and experienced than she was. “I would literally work a full day, go home, take the kids to ballet, cook dinner, help them with homework and then I would drive back to the office and work until midnight…,” said Shannon. Not getting the job done or offering excuses was not part of her DNA and that remains the case even today.
Married to executive chef, Marcel Beauclair, Shannon is the mother of two children and passionate about family, friends, and creating images that reflect the beauty that lies within each person. Her own life experiences have provided a backdrop for such work, and she is intent on making her clients feel beautiful, worthy, and graceful when they otherwise may not. While she specializes in portrait photography, delivering exceptional headshots, senior class photos, and sittings for families, Shannon is equally capable of capturing whatever imagery is needed and her work has been featured on the cover of numerous magazines including several editions of this publication. As recently as 2023, Shannon was recognized by the international photography organization, ICON for excellence in several categories including Grand Champion in the Portrait division.
Given the numerous awards, cover photos, and international accolades, it would be easy to assume Shannon became the decorated photographer that she is naturally or is simply gifted. In fact, her tenacious desire for excellence, regardless of what she is doing, has been the common thread since her youth. One could use many adjectives to describe Shannon including driven, persistent, and ambitious but satisfied will not be among them. While she is confident and content in her demeanor, Shannon is always setting new goals for herself, and that part of her personality has resulted in well-deserved recognition.
Though celebrated and successful, Shannon Beauclair has not escaped her share of challenges and hardship. Among these is she is a cancer survivor herself. Having recovered and considered in remission, Shannon knows intimately how difficulty and circumstances can make a person feel. “I want to normalize having beautifully curated photos, it’s part of leaving a legacy”. One of her clients had lost a child many years ago and cherished every photograph she had of her daughter. Shannon offered to take portraits of her, knowing they too would be cherished by her family one day. “I want to create portraits that you want on your wall, not hidden in your phone, I want you to be able to share it.”
While Shannon Beauclair captures the essence of each client, it is the person behind the lens that is extraordinary. She sees the light that shines within the human being in front of her and she insists on reflecting that in her work, gifting them with a stunning result, and allowing their legacy to endure.
“I WANT TO NORMALIZE HAVING BEAUTIFULLY CURATED PHOTOS, IT’S PART OF LEAVING A LEGACY.”
Handbags as Silent Storytellers
A DESIGNER’S THOUGHTS
ARTICLE BY CHAU SÁENZ
PHOTOGRAPHY BY THANG DAO
Handbags are often seen as fashion statements and practical carriers of necessities, but they can be so much more. A handbag is an extension of who we are; they carry our stories. These silent carriers of the tales of our lives reflect our journeys, aspirations, and even the burdens we bear. Our handbags hold our daily essentials, revealing who we are and the lives we lead at any given moment.
The weight of a handbag can symbolize the weight of our responsibilities. An overstuffed bag might signify a life filled with commitments. A mom’s tote, brimming with snacks and baby wipes, speaks of selflessness and endless care for loved ones. On the other hand, a sleek clutch for a formal event, holding only the essentials, reflects a temporary escape from daily responsibilities.
Handbags can also be part of the image we present to the world. A designer bag symbolizes status and success, projecting confidence and achievement. Conversely, a well-made handbag from an unknown brand speaks of a preference for quality over status.
A well-worn, beloved bag suggests comfort, authenticity, sentimentality, or a carefree attitude focused on what’s inside rather than outside.
Our handbags can embody our dreams. The professional’s structured briefcase symbolizes career goals and ambition. Meanwhile, a traveler’s backpack, marked by journeys and memories, tells a story of seeking new experiences and horizons. Handbags take us on our journeys, carrying what we need to face each day. They are with us through the mundane and the extraordinary, the highs and the lows, holding essentials as we navigate life’s twists and turns. Each scratch and stain on a beloved bag chronicles the memories of our journey. They might know more about our life story than our closest friend or spouse. Next time you see someone carrying a handbag, consider the silent story it tells. Like people-watching, our empathetic eyes can see the story unfold as we watch the silent storytelling of the bag they carry. In choosing your bag, you get to share the story you want to share that day.

FASHION BOUTIQUES YOU MUST VISIT AROUND TOWN
Golden Clothing Store
If you’re looking for an “every day, cool girl next door” vibe, Golden Clothing Store has you covered. With an extensive background in retail and marketing, owner Jennifer Alexander Locken opened Golden Clothing Store as an online store four years ago. After lots (and lots) of pop-ups, Locken set her sights on an actual storefront, and landed on Bickford Avenue. Locken said she wanted to create a fresh and fun environment for people to shop, learn style tips, and feel beautiful and comfortable in what they’re wearing. Locken personally curates all the clothing at the shop and runs all the marketing avenues, focusing on easy and wearable items that are comfortable but can also transition from day to night. But what makes Golden Clothing Store stand out? Their denim. They have a lot of denim choices, featuring a wide variety of brands and styles (such as AG Denim, Eunina, Hidden, and Unpublished.) Locken said the store is homey, laid back and fun, with price tags that are affordable. “I wanted to bring energy to the store, but not have it be intimidating,” she said. So if you’re still seeking that PERFECT pair of jeans, or are just looking to stock up on your layering pieces for fall, make sure to visit the Golden Clothing Store at 1800 Bickford Ave, Suite 204 (right next to Josh’s Caps & Taps!) or online at https://www.theshopgolden.com/
Edit - an Olive and Bloom Co.
Located in the heart of First Street, Edit – an Olive and Bloom Co., features an entire lifestyle marketplace with men’s, women’s, and baby apparel, along with home décor, furniture, housewares, gifts and more. With a whole lot of help and support, Rachelle Cunningham, a Snohomish mom of four boys, completely transformed the previous space and opened the store in April 2021. She has been loving helping community members find their perfect pieces ever since. Edit customers say the store is “perfectly curated,” the quality of the items is “unmatched” and the employees are “always friendly and helpful.” Which is probably why Lamb & Co’s Leslie and Lyndsay Lamb are friends and frequent shoppers, sporting many of Edit’s pieces on their HGTV show “Unsellable Houses.” But with a fun and intentional atmosphere, a solid staff who makes sure everyone leaves content, and a load of customizable options, it’s no wonder the store is many local’s favorite. Even their furniture pieces are customizable, with a variety of colors and prints to choose from, including Pendleton and leather options. Aside from the various plants and ferns hanging from the ceiling, one feature that really stands out in the store is the huge wall-size chalkboard calendar, created every month by Jordyn Lee, local artist and photographer. The vibrant colors, encouraging messages, and intentional artwork make for a fun, personal touch while you peruse the racks. And unlike other Snohomish boutiques, Edit is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday – so you’ll never miss them! You can find them at 1001 First Street or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/edit_anoliveandbloomco.
Peaches
“It’s like shopping in your best friend’s closet.” That’s how Kay Gailey describes Peaches, the boutique she owns with her two daughters, Acacia and Cynnia. From clothing to beauty products to gift items, everything in the store is something Kay, Acacia or Cynnia would want to buy themselves. “One of us has to love it,” Kay said. “Every single thing in the store is one of our favorites.” Some of their favorite brands they carry include Free People, Michael Stars, Saltwater Lux, Vuori and Barefoot Dreams. “We like to look good, but we also like to be comfortable,” Kay said. “We stay away from fast fashion and stick with the core brands we’ve been using for years.” Located in the old Snohomish jail, Peaches is literally “underground,” making it hard for passersby to notice. Kay said they put out a sign and balloons every day, but most people who come into the shop are return customers. “I feel like once they get down there and see it, they want to come back.” The most popular item they sell is their “Peaches”
sweatshirt, featuring a Peach outline on the upper sleeve, so you can wear a vest over and still see the design. This is the same peach that’s tattooed on the three girls. “Our family motto is ‘Always Be a Peach,’” said Kay. “If you can be a peach through anything, you’ll have a good life.” With online ordering for in-store pickup, loads of fun classes and parties, and a brand new “Peaches Underground” to occupy the men while the women shop, this boutique checks all the boxes for a downtown Snohomish boutique. Check them out at 1024 1st Street or at https://alwaysbeapeach.com/.
Maple + Moss Boutique
Walking into Maple + Moss, you may be greeted by owner Kortney Henry, or if you’re lucky, her handsome sidekick/ resident shop dog, Jimmy. Your one-stop shop for all things Pacific Northwest lifestyle, this downtown Snohomish boutique has been offering a curated selection of men’s and women’s clothing, accessories, candles, mugs and glassware, and jewelry for nearly 10 years. Henry describes the shop style as “laid-back” and “effortlessly chic,” with a focus on super soft fabrics and flattering silhouettes. From the perfect hoodie, tee shirt, dress, or denim, they have everything you need to elevate your wardrobe. Henry said one of their most popular collections is the Rainer Beer collection for men, featuring unique and stylish pieces inspired by the iconic Pacific Northwest brew. For women, the elevated bamboo basics are a fan favorite, offering comfort and style all in one. But Maple + Moss is not just about fashion – they are deeply committed to the community, supporting and volunteering for many Snohomish causes, such as the Zombie Walk, the Snohomish food bank, and Pasados Animal Safe Haven through their annual Pink Giving Tree. As the storefront window says, “Community is always in style.” So whether you’re looking for a casual everyday look, a true PNW adventure outfit, or something special for a night out, Maple + Moss Boutique has you covered. Check them out at 104 Union Ave or https://www. mapleandmossboutique.com/ (and bring your dog treats!)
