I love you Teddy! Happy Mother's Day

As I was growing up one of the most influential people in my life was my best friends mom, Teddy. She and her husband, Mel, raised 4 boys and you can probably imagine a bit of what they put them through. Sleepless nights as rambunctious little boys, sports injuries with nearly every season, all that is included with music lessons, teaching them how to drive and how to be gentlemen as adolescence approached. Through it all Teddy believed in her boys and once you earned her trust, you were one of them and that included getting an ear full when you misbehaved or your grades didn’t show well.

At least once a week, I would drop in around dinner time to find Teddy making something amazing and she always had just enough for anyone who showed up. Countless is the number of homemade pizzas Teddy baked for us as we grew from middle school age, awkward boys into athletic and strong high school seniors. I can still hear her ask, “Does your mom know you are here? Give her a call anyway just to make sure.”

Teddy was my other mother and I’ll forever be grateful for the love she showed me and all of the boys and young men who showed up at their door. She demonstrated, with everything she said and did, how to generously give of yourself without expecting anything in return.

In the pages that follow you'll read about some of the extraordinary women who make our community a wonderful place to live through their work and unwavering belief in what is possible. I hope you will introduce yourself to them because if you do, you too will be inspired.

This month we celebrate the mothers in our lives and it wouldn’t be the same if I didn’t include a note about my best friend and the mom who influenced us through the love she had for us all. Thank you, Teddy! Let the celebration begin!

WOMAN in Charge

HOW FAMILY HISTORY LEADS TO A YOUNG WOMAN'S PASSION

ARTICLE BY MICHELLE W. PARNELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAWNING MEMORIES

From a very young age, Denera McKnight learned all about the home improvement industry through her Dad, who was a contractor. As an adult, she expanded her knowledge and experience by working in different aspects of the industry dealing with countertops, doors, and general construction. In 2023, Denera combined her experience with a passion for helping others and opened Rockwood Interiors.

“I love interacting with and helping customers make their house into their home by finding what they have always wanted to change about it and helping them make those changes,” she shares. “Then, seeing the before and the after is really exciting.”

Denera’s friendly personality helps customers feel welcome and

comfortable as they navigate home remodeling. Her calm demeanor, especially under stress, and extensive experience also gives them the reassurance that when unexpected challenges arise, she can efficiently address the problems and find the best solution.

Customers who walk into the Rockwood Interiors showroom find it stocked with full-size samples of flooring, countertops, tile, and cabinets. This allows customers to get a true feel for the materials and colors. Whether customers know what they are looking for or need a little guidance, Denera is there to help.

“I’m happy to put colors together and help them decide what they want, and I enjoy doing that with them,” she says. “Customers can also borrow samples, take them home, and see what it looks like in their home with the lighting and things like that. Some people come back several times to figure it out. Once they pick out what they want, I have sub-contractors that I work with who do all the installation.” Depending on materials, installation can usually be completed within a few weeks of the initial consultation.

remodeling now instead of just flooring or tile installations. We can do it all.”

As a woman business owner, Denera says being plugged in to a great group of local women has been very encouraging and she recommends new and future female business owners get connected with a group as well.

“I’m plugged into a local women’s networking group called BLOS, Business Ladies of Society,” she says. “It is especially important in that first year or two of business to have a lot of support and the cheerleaders you find in these types of groups. They offer classes you can take when you’re feeling overwhelmed or you need help in a certain area, and you support one another’s businesses.”

“I love interacting with and helping customers make their house into their home.”

She also stresses that it is essential to have the right people to work alongside you in business. “It’s not easy starting up,” says Denera. “So, it’s important to surround yourself with people you can really trust and rely on who have your back. For me, I chose my subcontractors, and I stick with them because I know that I can trust them and that I would welcome them in my home.”

Denera’s fiancée, Josh Carter, recently opened Jaeroch Construction and they now work in tandem to complete projects under the umbrella of Rockwood Design Group. “We are a family business and we came up with Jaeroch Construction by taking the middle names of our two youngest daughters and combining them. His daughter’s middle name is Jae, and my daughter’s middle name is Rochelle, which together makes Jaeroch (pronounced jay-rock),” she explains. “We share the same office, and we can offer full-service

Through owning a small business in Snohomish, Denera has found a supportive community of friendly people. “The community is my favorite part,” she shares. “There are a lot of small business owners just like me who live here and work here, and everybody is supportive of each other.”

Rockwood Interiors is located 14815 Chain Lake Rd, Suite G, in Monroe. To schedule an appointment, visit https://www.rockwooddg.com , call 360-780-7778 , or send an email to Denera@ RockwoodDG.com . Also follow Rockwood Interiors on Facebook.

ENTREPRENEURIAL ADVICE FROM WOMEN WHO HAVE TAKEN THE RISK.

ARTICLE BY SNOHOMISH CITY LIFESTYLE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAWNING MEMORIES

Cascade Concrete Coatings, LLC

WHAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING YOU HAD TO OVERCOME IN STARTING YOUR BUSINESS?

One of the biggest challenges I faced early on was stepping into an industry that’s often male-dominated and carving out a space for myself as a female business owner. Earning trust, proving expertise, and building credibility took time, especially in the trades. On top of that, launching a business comes with all the usual hurdles—wearing every hat, figuring out operations, and learning how to scale responsibly. But that initial uphill climb taught me how capable and resourceful I could be.

WHAT REWARDS HAVE YOU SEEN BECAUSE OF OVERCOMING THAT DIFFICULTY?

The rewards have been incredible watching our customer base grow, receiving amazing feedback, and seeing our work make a real impact in people’s lives and businesses is deeply fulfilling. But beyond the visible success, the most meaningful reward has been the confidence I’ve gained. I’ve built something from the ground up, and now I get to inspire others—especially women—to pursue paths that may not always look traditional. Every project we complete is a reminder of how far we’ve come.

Melinda Burkhead, MFA

WHAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING YOU HAD TO OVERCOME IN STARTING YOUR BUSINESS?

The most difficult thing I had to overcome was transitioning from being a creator and teacher to also being a business owner. While I had years of experience teaching art and running a previous art center, opening Burkhead Art Center meant stepping into a new role that involved not only creating art but managing all the logistics of running a business — everything from financial planning to marketing and building community partnerships.

WHAT REWARDS HAVE YOU SEEN BECAUSE OF OVERCOMING THAT DIFFICULTY?

First and foremost, overcoming the challenges has allowed me to see the impact that Burkhead Art Center has had on the local artistic community. Watching artists discover their unique voices and embrace their creativity in a supportive environment has been deeply fulfilling. Additionally, I’ve gained a greater sense of personal growth and resilience as a business owner. Most rewarding of all is the connection I’ve built with the artists and students I work with — seeing them succeed and knowing that my space has played a role in that journey is incredibly gratifying.

Owner & Designer Opaline Interiors

WHAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING YOU HAD TO OVERCOME IN STARTING YOUR BUSINESS?

The most difficult hurdle I faced when I was starting Opaline, was overcoming my own self-doubt. Launching a venture requires a significant financial investment, which led me to ask myself countless questions before I felt confident enough to take the leap. There was also the reality that owning a store means needing to make sure someone is at the store, which most likely would mean weekends and holidays spent away from my family. Although I felt equipped with the necessary skills, I couldn't shake the worry that my efforts wouldn't pay off, that the business might not succeed, and that the sacrifices, especially time away from my small children, would be too great.

WHAT REWARDS HAVE YOU SEEN BECAUSE OF OVERCOMING THAT

DIFFICULTY?

Looking back almost a year later, I can confidently say that those doubts, while natural, have proven to be unfounded. I'm fortunate to have an amazing team by my side, the store is thriving, and I haven't had to compromise precious time with my family. Proving to myself that I could prevail through those self-doubts, has given me the confidence to trust myself.

Dawning Memories

WHAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING YOU HAD TO OVERCOME IN STARTING YOUR BUSINESS?

Recognizing that every professional has areas where they can grow and the ones who succeed are the ones who work hard and remain humble. Putting in the work to learn was rewarding. But seeing the long road ahead, all those who were so far more advanced forced me to accept where I was. Then I had to put in the effort to develop my skills and experiment with new ideas to stretch and grow myself.

WHAT REWARDS HAVE YOU SEEN BECAUSE OF OVERCOMING THAT DIFFICULTY?

My business has grown every year since committing to this adventure. I have been grateful to earn the referrals of so many clients. Additionally, annual event coordinators are calling year over year for my services, which have become a tradition. Clients are excited to share their photos in both print and on social media. It is so rewarding to see your work show up on LinkedIn, Facebook, or Instagram - not to mention getting the various publications my photos have reached.

Kiana Richards Marketing & Social Media  Snohomish Golf Course

WHAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING YOU HAD TO OVERCOME IN STARTING YOUR BUSINESS?

The golf industry is heavily male dominated, which made me hesitant when I first started getting involved with my husband’s business, handling their social media and marketing. I wasn’t sure how people would react, so I kept a low profile, not wanting anyone to know it was me behind the scenes. But over time, golfers began approaching my husband, complimenting the fresh, improved marketing. Slowly, word got out that I was the one behind it all. Their positive feedback gave me the confidence to finally embrace my role and share that it was my work.

WHAT REWARDS HAVE YOU SEEN BECAUSE OF OVERCOMING THAT DIFFICULTY?

When I’m at the golf course now, I see more women golfing than ever before, and it’s such an amazing sight. It gives me hope that one day, my daughters will be out there too, enjoying the game. I also look forward to seeing the course’s ladies club continue to grow, creating an even stronger and more supportive community for women in golf.

A TASTE OF Spring

This zippy, pico-style salsa is sweet and savory - which means it has depth in flavor that plays well with your favorite grilled seafood or tacos, or maybe even a lovely addition to a 7-layer-dip. Spice it up or tone it down - it's versatile and delectable however you serve it up. The best part? Even the mango naysayers seem to love it. Take along as a side dish to your next cookout or bunko night and add some color and zip to the table. Let’s make it!

Fresh Mango Salsa

FRESH MANGO SALSA

SERVES

Ingredients:

• 1 large ripe mango

• 3-4 Roma tomatoes

• 1 medium red onion

• 1 small serrano pepper OR jalapeno

• 1 cup cilantro, chopped

• 1 clove garlic, grated

• 3-4 medium limes, juiced, about ½ cup

• 1 teaspoon chili powder

• ½ teaspoon cumin

• 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

• ¼  teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste

Kitchen Tools:

• Medium mixing bowl

• Cutting board

• Chef’s knife

• Paring knife

• Microplane / zester

• Handheld juicer

• Measuring cups and spoons

• Rubber spatula or wooden spoon 4-6 people

Directions:

1. After washing your produce, dice the mango. Using your chef’s knife, trim the fruit away from the pit to get as much of the flesh as possible. Carefully remove the peel and dice the fruit into ½ inch pieces and add to your bowl.

2. Cut the Roma tomatoes in half, then in half again. Gently remove the excess water and seeds with a spoon or with your index finger. (This will make your salsa less watered down and allow the flavors to shine.) Dice the tomatoes into ½  inch cubes and add to the mixing bowl.

3. Dice the onion into similarly sized pieces and add to your bowl.

4. Slice your serrano or jalapeno in half lengthwise. You can remove the seeds by using a small spoon to scrape them out. For a spicier salsa, you can leave some or all of the seeds in. Half the peppers once more so you are left with four long

strips. Line them up and dice into ¼ inch pieces. Add to your bowl.

5. Roughly chop the cilantro, peel and grate the garlic, juice the limes and add to your bowl.

6. Add the chili powder, cumin, red pepper flakes, and salt.

7. Give the salsa a good stir, incorporating all the ingredients until well combined.

8. Serve cold with tortilla chips, or try over grilled fish, meat, or tacos.

9. This Fresh Mango Salsa will store for 2-3 days in the refrigerator.

EMBRACING LUXURY IN MOTHERHOOD

Motherhood is a beautiful paradox. One moment, you’re in awe of the tiny life you’ve created, and the next, you’re wondering how your once pristine handbag has become a catchall for baby wipes, crumpled receipts, and the occasional rogue Cheerio.

“A well-crafted handbag isn’t just an accessory; it’s a statement of self-worth and a piece of artistry that brings confidence.”

We’ve all experienced that moment - standing in line for coffee, spotting a woman effortlessly carrying a luxury handbag, untouched by the chaos of motherhood. No milk stains, no crayon marks, just an immaculate piece of craftsmanship swinging effortlessly from her arm. And at that moment, curiosity (or perhaps even longing) surfaces. How does she do it? How does she make space for something so pristine in a life that constantly demands sacrifice?

Somewhere along the way, we internalized the idea that motherhood means putting ourselves second, third, or even last. It’s as if caring for ourselves, beyond the basic platitudes of “take a nap when they

nap” or “remember to eat”, is somehow indulgent, even selfish.

But why should self-care stop at the bare minimum? Why limit it to rest or basic sustenance? Selfcare should include the things that bring us joy and remind us of who we were before we took on the beautiful responsibility of raising another human being. And yes, that includes luxury.

Luxury, in its essence, transcends material things. It embodies value, intention, and feeling. A wellcrafted handbag isn’t just an accessory; it’s a statement of self-worth and a piece of artistry that brings confidence. It becomes a daily companion we reach CONTINUED >

for again and again, not just for its functionality but because it makes us feel good.

Yet, so many mothers hesitate to embrace luxury in their everyday lives. An unspoken guilt whispers, “You don’t need that,” or “Shouldn’t you be spending that money elsewhere?” But what if we flipped that script? What if we saw luxury as an act of self-respect rather than self-indulgence?

Children grow, but responsibilities don’t fade; they evolve. The mental load of motherhood does not lighten as kids move from diapers to school schedules, from toddler tantrums to teenage emotions. The weight of it all remains, shifting, adapting, but ever-present. If we continue to neglect our joy and deny ourselves the things that make us feel seen and celebrated, what message does that send to the next generation?

Mothers deserve beauty, too. We deserve to carry something that makes us feel like ourselves - something that belongs to us alone, untouched by the demands of caregiving. Owning a luxury handbag, slipping into designer shoes, or wrapping yourself in the softest silk scarf isn’t about status. It’s about reclaiming a part of yourself that often gets lost in the shuffle of motherhood.

This Mother’s Day, let’s redefine self-care. Let’s include luxury in the conversation—not as a frivolous indulgence but as a form of self-celebration. Whether it’s a beautifully crafted handbag that makes you feel put together, earrings that remind you of your strength, or even a fragrance that transports you to a place of peace, let it be yours, unapologetically.

Because the truth is, you are worthy of luxury, of beauty, of something exclusively for you. And the best part? Embracing this sets an example for the little ones watching, teaching them that caring for oneself is not an afterthought but a birthright.

This Mother’s Day, celebrate yourself. Carry the bag. Wear the shoes. Buy the piece that makes you feel alive. Motherhood and luxury are not mutually exclusive. They belong together, just like you and the life you’re building.

Driving SUPPORT

Snohomish County Search & Rescue

In Snohomish County, community connections run deep and nowhere is that more evident than in the partnership between Allied Motorsports and Snohomish County Volunteer Search and Rescue (SCSAR). What started as professional relationships built over decades has grown into a meaningful collaboration that keeps rescue teams ready to respond when needed most.

For Allied Motorsports owners Dana and Bree Swanson, supporting SCSAR is more than just lending a helping hand—it’s a passion. Dana has worked in the off-road industry for over 40 years, building friendships with members of SCSAR’s 4x4 unit along the way. When longtime friend Aaron Davenport took over leadership of the unit, the partnership between Allied Motorsports and SCSAR strengthened even more.

“We’ve had a relationship with these guys for years,” Bree explained.  “When Aaron stepped into that role, Dana immediately wanted to help however we could. It’s just something that’s close to our hearts.”

That help has come in many forms. From hosting SCSAR meetings at their shop to stepping in when vehicles need urgent repairs, Allied Motorsports is there to lend a helping hand to ensure that these rescue teams stay operational. A perfect example was a recent situation where one of SCSAR’s Jeeps needed repairs, but county resources were stretched thin due to winter storm preparations. Rather than let the vehicle sit idle, Dana invited the team

to bring it to Allied Motorsports. Not only did they fix the issue, but Dana even found a needed part in his personal garage to get the Jeep back on the road in time for a weekend mission.

The partnership extends beyond emergency repairs. SCSAR has also supported Allied Motorsports, helping with traffic control at events and participating in local celebrations like the light parade and classic car show. The mutual respect and shared commitment to service have led to even more community connections, including partnerships with the Snohomish Chamber of Commerce.

For Dana and Bree, giving back isn’t just about business, it’s about community. Both have deep roots in Snohomish, with Bree’s family going back five generations. Their passion for service extends beyond SCSAR. Allied Motorsports is also involved with Stars and Stripes Alliance, a nonprofit supporting veterans and senior citizens, as well as the Pacific Northwest Four-Wheel Drive Association, which promotes responsible land use for off-road enthusiasts.

The impact of their efforts became even more evident during their one-year anniversary celebration in February. The event, featured local vendors like Avery’s Chicken and Waffles and a coffee cart, was set to start at 11 a.m.—but by 10, the parking lot was already packed with community members eager to celebrate. Seeing the overwhelming support, Bree and Dana stepped back for a moment, realizing they had built more than a business—they had built a community hub.

“It was really humbling,” Bree said.  “To see so many people come out and support us, just like we’ve supported them—it was one of those moments where you know you’re doing something bigger than yourself.”

Allied Motorsports’ dedication to Snohomish County goes beyond selling parts and fixing vehicles. They are proof that when local businesses and nonprofits come together, the entire community benefits. Whether it’s keeping rescue vehicles running or ensuring veterans and seniors get the support they need, Dana and Bree Swanson have made it clear: giving back is just part of who they are.

You can meet Bree and Dana Swanson at Allied Motorsports 1824 Bickford Ave Unit C Snohomish. For more information on how you can support or volunteer with Snohomish County Search & Rescue visit https://scvsar.org.

From Stem To Vase:

TRANSFORMING FLORALS INTO ART

Flowers have a rich history of symbolic meanings.

As far back as the 19th century, they were used to convey secret messages. Stories throughout history recount how flowers were used to send hidden messages between people. French publishers began producing flower dictionaries that cataloged the many floral codes that had been gathered over time. Some of these meanings were linked to the flower’s root name, often derived from mythology, while others were drawn from the flowers themselves. The colors, medicinal properties, and even the superstitions

associated with these flowers all contributed to the creation of this secret language.

In addition to their symbolic significance, flowers bring natural beauty to any interior, enhancing spaces with their color, texture, and mood-boosting qualities. Floral arrangements not only create a cozy atmosphere but also infuse a room with personality, elevating the overall ambiance. There are multiple ways to creatively integrate florals into your home, and whether using fresh or artificial flowers, creative displays can make quite the statement piece.

Hanging Florals

Florals and Fruit

Add an extra burst of color and texture to your floral arrangement by layering fruit around the edges of your vase. To achieve this, place a smaller vase inside a larger one, ensuring the flowers stay contained in the inner vase to preserve their shape. Fill the surrounding space with water and then arrange sliced fruit along the vase’s outer sides. For a fresh touch, add ice cubes to keep the fruit looking vibrant longer and to hold them in place. Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.

For a dramatic effect, try creating a hanging floral display. Floral cones are available for this style, or you can craft your own for a more personalized, organic look. The contrast between long-stemmed white flowers and a dark wall creates a striking visual impact.

No matter how you choose to display them, flowers are a wonderful addition to any room. They boost mood, improve air quality, spark creativity, and bring a decorative charm to any space.

Flower Frogs

Using a frog to display flowers creates a minimalist yet elegant look that highlights the individuality of each bloom. It helps the stems stay in place. To set it up, place the frog on your chosen display base, whether it’s a vase, bowl, platter, or any container you prefer. Then, simply insert the flower stems by gently pressing them into the prongs. Tip: Flowers with sturdy stems and a lighter top work best in a frog, as delicate blooms tend to lose their shape more quickly.

DIY DAY

INSPIRATION FOR A MOTHER/ DAUGHTER DIY DAY

WITH MOM

An afternoon spent together is priceless with today’s busy schedules. Instead of going out, staying in can provide quaint, quiet one-on-one time for a mother and daughter (or multiple daughters). Finding time on calendars is the hard part, and filling that time is all fun from there. Here are a few favorite ideas for inspiration that may spark excitement for planning those special times together.

01 Charm Necklaces

Custom DIY charm necklaces and bracelets are trending. Gather a theme idea: birthstones, family initials, travels or even favorite hobbies, and procure charms from your local craft store or online shop. Selecting charms for each other also could be a fun way to bring delight to the crafting occasion. Necklaces and bracelets can be made for each other, or as future gifts for upcoming occasions such as a family wedding, a birthday milestone or an anniversary.

Storytelling makes for the best memories. Structure memory recall by filming or journaling interview-style question-and-answer sessions, cataloging information for future generations. Videos and notes with detailed family adventures are priceless, and we all always wish we had more of them.

Journaling 03 Meal Prep

Text conversations around kitchen tips or ingredient procurement seem endless. Spend some time together in the kitchen preparing favorite family recipes, sharing Mom’s best tips and tricks. Choosing freezer-friendly meals is a great way to walk away with meals for upcoming busy days. There’s nothing like Mom’s recipes!
