Dine In | Take Out

From the Editor, with Thanks

Dear Readers,

There’s something about November that invites us to slow down and take notice. The cooler mornings, the golden leaves, and yes, even the early hints of holiday bustle all seem to whisper the same message: pause, savor, give thanks.

This issue is filled with stories that capture that spirit. Take Praise Pumpkins, for example— porch décor that is festive and beautiful, yet rooted in a deeper meaning of gratitude and faith. Or Vickery Hardware, a Smyrna staple celebrating 75 years of helping neighbors tackle projects big and small. These stories remind us that traditions—whether new or generations old—shape our sense of community.

We also highlight fresh beginnings, like Dr. Harriott at RenewAll Orthodontics, who has built more than a practice—she’s created a warm, modern space that reflects her gratitude for family, patients, and the journey of following her calling. And when it comes to gathering, Reagan Zottnick of Meats to Sweets shows us how a thoughtfully crafted charcuterie board can turn even a simple get-together into a celebration.

Of course, gratitude often flows through creativity. Local artist, author, and philanthropist Kim Chesney embodies that beautifully, using her gifts not just to inspire but to give back. And through the lens of our talented photographer, Ashley Putnam, we discover a local hidden gem that might otherwise go unnoticed—a reminder that thankfulness can be found in small, quiet corners too.

Perhaps my favorite piece this month is our roundup of “Thankful Thoughts” from local business owners. Reading their reflections on what this season means to them is both heartwarming and grounding. It’s a reminder that no matter our paths, gratitude is the common thread that ties us together.

As for me, I’m thankful for my sons, Charlie and Henry, who keep life lively and full of laughter; for friends who make ordinary days extraordinary; and for this community that never fails to inspire me. Most of all, I’m thankful for you—our readers—who open these pages each month and let us share stories that matter.

May your Thanksgiving be filled with joy, warmth, and plenty of reasons to give thanks.

With heartfelt gratitude,

November 2025

Required Periodic Business Tasks

Once you launch your business you start an ongoing sequence of tasks and bills that you will need to handle throughout the year. Each of the following is important to the ongoing success of your business.

Annual State Registration (LLC, Corp, LLLP): Georgia requires an annual registration with annual fee paid to maintain your legal entity.

Business License: Formally known as an Occupational Tax Certificate. Once established with the local city or county, every year you will be asked to report your revenue and number of employees. Later you will receive a tax bill to pay based on revenue you earned.

Business Personal Property Tax : Most counties have a tax on your business assets. Keep good records of any furniture and equipment you purchase (date and amount spent) since you will need to report this to the county and you will be taxed on that value. Typically, there is an exemption for businesses with total asset value below a set amount.

Quarterly Tax Payments: Once you start showing income on your tax statements, you can expect the IRS to require you to make quarterly income tax payments. This is how the IRS ensures payments are made regularly so you don’t end up with a big tax bill at the end of the year. The IRS wants to earn interest on that money and ensure it doesn’t get spent on other business activities, leaving you with a tax bill you can’t pay.

Payroll and Payroll Taxes: Quarterly state and federal payroll tax payments. Most payroll services will submit these filings for you.

Insurance: 1) A Business Owners Policy (BOP) provides the basic insurance protection. This is required when you formally lease office space, or when you have your products show up online or in stores. With products you add product liability insurance on top of your BOP policy. 2) Workers’ Compensation Insurance: If you have employees, you will need to add workers’ compensation insurance to your BOP policy, amount paid is based on wages paid and the risk level of the employee activities. You will be required to complete an annual audit for your insurance carrier, showing information from your payroll statements. 3) Auto insurance: Since your personal auto insurance doesn’t cover driving for work, you will want to have an Automobile insurance rider added to your BOP policy, especially if you have employees driving their personal vehicles for work.

Workplace Posters: If you have employees, you need to maintain the state and federal required employee information posters. These are updated periodically as laws change. You will update the workman’s compensation information with annual information from your insurance carrier. If you don’t have an office/workspace you can share the information with remote employees via email or company internet.

Website Maintenance: Periodic expenses for annual renewal of our website domain, SSL certificates (https vs http) providing encryption security on your website, and website hosting costs. Plus, time is required for periodic updates to your website.

Accounting records: Records revenue and expenses yourself or regularly work with an accountant.

75 YEARS OF SMYRNA Tradition

From small fixes to big milestones, Vickery Hardware has kept Smyrna building for generations.

ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS LAWERY & ASHLEY PUTNAM

On a late September Saturday, former and current employees stepped inside Vickery Hardware, turning the store into a reunion hall of memories and milestones. They lingered in the aisles swapping stories, and the air buzzed with laughter and gratitude as the team gathered to celebrate 75 years of a beloved community landmark.

For those who have lived in Smyrna for any length of time, Vickery Hardware is more than just a store. It’s a constant presence, a friendly stop for advice, a gathering place where neighbors feel known. In a city that has transformed dramatically over the past seven decades, Vickery has stood steady—a reminder that some traditions are worth preserving.

FROM HOWARD TO VICKERY

The story begins in the mid-20th century, when the shop was known as Howard Hardware on Atlanta Road. In 1950, Thomas Vickery purchased the business, moved it to the Dickson Shopping Center, and renamed it Vickery Hardware. The new name stuck. Sixteen years later, in 1966, Hugh Hutchings bought the store. He decided not to change a thing. “It had a good name,” Susan explains simply. “So he kept the name.”

From that point forward, the store became part of the Hutchings family’s daily life. Susan remembers growing up in its aisles, helping customers and learning the rhythm of a small business that was as much about people as it was about hardware. Though she once dreamed of becoming a teacher, fate had other plans.

When her father passed away in 2002, Susan took the reins. It was a daunting responsibility, but also one that felt right. “The hardware store was home to me,” she says. “While I think everyone thinks about what might have been in their life, I believe I chose the path I was best suited for.”

MORE THAN A STORE

What makes Vickery Hardware special isn’t just its longevity—it’s the way the business has woven itself into the life of Smyrna.

The list of community commitments is long and heartfelt. Vickery has sponsored Little League teams, ensuring kids had uniforms and equipment to take the field. The store has backed high school sports programs, rooting for the home team season after season. They’ve supported the Smyrna Garden Club, helping keep the city in bloom. And they even helped establish a Little Free Library, placing books into the hands of neighbors who might not have them otherwise.

To Susan, these efforts are not acts of charity but expressions of gratitude. “We have always tried to give back,” she says. “This community has supported us for 75 years—it’s only right that we support it in return.”

Their commitment extends beyond sponsorships. Vickery never closed during COVID, serving as a steady resource when many families were stuck at home, desperate to tackle projects or make small repairs. They’ve opened their doors on snow days when larger stores shut down, ensuring customers could still find what they needed. “We’ve honestly just tried to treat our customers with respect and help them with their projects,” Susan says.

MORE THAN HARDWARE

Vickery Hardware is woven into the fabric of Smyrna. Beyond tools and supplies, they’ve sponsored kids’ teams, cheered on high schools, supported garden tours, and fueled community projects. Through every season—pandemics, snow days, or celebrations—Vickery has been there, proving that true success is measured in relationships, not receipts.

“We’ve always tried to give back. This community has supported us for 75 years —it’s only right that we support it in return.”

THE HUMAN SIDE OF HARDWARE

Perhaps the best measure of Vickery’s impact lies in the stories Susan loves to share. Like the older gentleman who comes in twice a year to have the staff set the clock in his car after daylight savings time. Or the woman who once needed to replace a toilet flapper—Vickery’s team walked her through the process step by step, and when she successfully fixed it, she proudly returned with photos to prove it.

Then there are the countless friendships Susan has witnessed form between her employees and the customers they serve. These relationships, built on trust and familiarity, are what transform a store into a community anchor.

Even the “shop cats” add to the charm. With their quiet presence among the shelves, they embody the warmth and character that make Vickery feel more like home than retail.

WEATHERING CHANGE

Running a small, independent hardware store isn’t without challenges. Competition from big-box retailers looms large, and economic shifts—such as recent tariffs—have affected costs. Susan admits she worries about the future. “I just pray we will be able to continue to thrive and grow,” she says.

Yet her perspective remains hopeful. She has watched Smyrna evolve and believes the best is still ahead. She loves the diversity the community now celebrates and the resilience it has shown in times of change.

“I am so honored to be a part of Smyrna,” Susan says. “I love how I’ve seen this community change and grow and adapt. This is a great place to live and have a business.”

A LEGACY OF GRATITUDE

As Vickery enters its 76th year, Susan is clear about what she’s most thankful for: the loyal support of her customers, the strength of the Smyrna community, and the opportunity to carry forward her family’s legacy.

The 75th anniversary party was a chance for former and current employees to pause, reflect, and give thanks—for the past, for the present, and for the people who have made it all possible. It was also a reminder that the story of Vickery Hardware is still being written, one customer interaction, one sponsored team, one act of kindness at a time.

In this month of gratitude, Vickery Hardware shines as a reminder that small businesses are the heartbeat of a community. They teach us that success isn’t measured only in sales, but in relationships nurtured, traditions carried forward, and neighbors cared for.

For 75 years, Vickery Hardware has shown Smyrna what it looks like to build not just homes, but a hometown. And for that, we are thankful.

PRAISE PUMPKINS

A faith-filled tradition turning porches into beacons of gratitude and joy.

For most people, pumpkins are simply a sign of fall. They line porches, accent doorsteps, and signal the change of seasons. But for Sheilah Tritt, pumpkins tell a much bigger story. They are symbols of gratitude, abundance, and faith—and the foundation of a movement she calls Praise Pumpkins.

“Pumpkins symbolize abundance and gratitude. With praise, our faith grows and our blessings multiply.”

The idea came to Sheilah in a Sunday church service. As she listened to a sermon about the power of praise, she found herself reflecting on the way autumn décor often leans toward themes of darkness. What if, she wondered, porches could instead tell a different story—one of light, joy, and thanksgiving?

“I remembered reading that pumpkins symbolize gratitude, harvest, and abundance,” Sheilah explains. “Pumpkin seeds represent growth and multiplication. As we praise God for our blessings, our faith grows. As we encourage each other, we plant seeds of growth.”

That seed of inspiration stayed with her until one night during a church revival. A visiting pastor encouraged the congregation to seek wisdom from mentors a generation ahead. The words struck Sheilah deeply, and she immediately thought of Barbara Williams, her longtime spiritual mentor and friend. Over lunch just days later, Sheilah shared her dream of creating

faith-centered porch displays that would celebrate the season while honoring Christ. Barbara’s joy-filled encouragement gave Sheilah the confirmation she needed—and Praise Pumpkins was officially born.

MORE THAN DÉCOR

From the beginning, Sheilah wanted Praise Pumpkins to be more than just pumpkins on a porch. Each display is intentionally designed to transform a home’s entrance into a space of gratitude and connection. Every package includes a curated selection of colorful pumpkins, anchored by a gold cross pumpkin that reflects light and faith. Families also receive a “Count Your Blessings” activity to help them pause and reflect on the season, writing down the things they’re grateful for. To encourage generosity, each package comes with a gift pumpkin and a special card meant to brighten the day of a neighbor, teacher, or friend.

CONTINUED >

“It’s about creating a tradition that stirs the spirit,” Sheilah says. “We want porches to shine with beauty, yes—but also with love, joy, and praise. In a world that can sometimes feel dark, even something as simple as a porch display can be a beacon of light.”

Sheilah describes porches as more than just entrances. “They are invitations,” she says. “Invitations to pause, reflect, worship, and share the light of Christ with neighbors, family, and friends.”

A MISSION ROOTED IN FAITH

Faith isn’t just part of Praise Pumpkins—it’s the heartbeat. “Jesus saved my life, and it’s my deepest desire to share His love, joy, peace, and blessing,” Sheilah shares.

Her partnership with Barbara has made the journey even more meaningful. “She is enthusiastic, joyful, and always encouraging,” Sheilah says with a smile. “It’s exciting to share blessings, pray through challenges, and watch God build our faith.”

That encouragement has helped Sheilah pour beauty and purpose into every display. For her, it’s not only about elevating curb appeal, but also about creating spaces that encourage reflection, inspire faith, and build family traditions that last year after year.

A SEASON OF GRATITUDE

Having just completed the 2025 season, Sheilah reflects on the journey with joy and looks ahead to welcoming families onto the wait list for 2026.

“First, we are most grateful for God and His stunning creation of beauty,” she says. “We’re also grateful for the families and businesses who are enthusiastic about supporting the mission to bring Fall back to a season of light.”

“Every Praise Pumpkins display is designed not only to elevate curb appeal but also to stir the spirit and create a legacy of faith.”

It is that gratitude that gives Praise Pumpkins its glow. Every display becomes a visible reminder of God’s faithfulness, a reason to pause and count blessings, and an opportunity to turn a porch into a place of praise.

Sheilah carries many memories of Praise Pumpkins, but one stands out as especially profound. The very first time she decorated a home, it poured rain throughout the setup. As she pulled away, she stopped to capture one last photo.

“One sunray was shining a beam of light directly onto the pumpkin with the gold cross,”

she remembers. “I had just posted about porches being a beacon of light on your street. It felt like God winked at me.”

That simple moment—a sunbeam piercing the clouds to illuminate a single pumpkin—remains a vivid reminder for Sheilah. To her, it was God’s way of affirming that the mission matters, and that even the smallest acts of praise and gratitude can carry great light.

As the season of Thanksgiving approaches, Praise Pumpkins is more than decoration. It is an invitation—an invitation to pause, give thanks, and let gratitude spill out onto the front steps and into the hearts of families, neighbors, and communities.

In the fall, I always lean into figs. Fresh, dried, or spooned into a jam, they pair beautifully with salami, prosciutto, and a creamy Brie. Burrata is another favorite of mine—an overlooked Italian cheese that has endless possibilities. In the summer, I love pairing it with peaches, prosciutto, purple tomatoes, fresh basil, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze. For the holidays, I top burrata with cranberry sauce, pistachios, and arugula. It’s festive, colorful, and always a crowd-pleaser.

When building a board, I like to start with the basics: a Brie, a couple of artisan cheeses, a favorite pork, butter-flavored olives, fresh and dried fruit, nuts, crackers, and a drizzle of honey. From there, it’s easy to layer in seasonal touches or playful flavors that make each gathering feel unique.

Pairings are part of the fun, too. Wine is usually my go-to with charcuterie. I recommend a crisp white like Pinot Grigio or a dry Riesling, or a light-bodied red such as Pinot Noir—both cut through the richness and complement the flavors beautifully. Classic cocktails like an Old Fashioned or an Aperol Spritz are also wonderful choices. And for those who prefer non-alcoholic options, flavored sparkling waters are a refreshing mocktail alternative.

What matters most, though, are the people gathered around the table. I love adding thoughtful touches that remind guests how special they are. One simple idea is to attach a tag to each glass with a note about why you’re thankful for that person. It’s personal, memorable, and sets a warm tone. Another favorite of mine is creating a dessert board that includes each guest’s favorite indulgence—it’s a sweet way to make sure everyone feels seen and celebrated.

As I reflect on this season of thankfulness, I couldn’t be more grateful for the support system that surrounds me. From my husband to my family, friends, and coworkers, I wouldn’t be able to do what I love without their encouragement. They give me the strength and joy to keep creating, keep growing, and keep sharing beauty through food.

This Thanksgiving, I hope your table is full of abundance, your glasses are raised in gratitude, and your heart is as full as your plate.

THROUGH HER FAMILY, HER PRACTICE, AND HER COMMUNITY, DR. HARRIOTT SHOWS HOW GRATITUDE CREATES CONFIDENCE AND INSPIRES BRIGHTER SMILES.

Gratitude Looks Good on You

In this season of gratitude, few stories embody thankfulness more beautifully than that of Dr. Kerisa Harriott. With her growing family, a new home in a vibrant Smyrna neighborhood, and the exciting launch of RenewAll Orthodontics, she is savoring the joy of fresh beginnings—and pausing to reflect on the blessings that make it all possible.

At the heart of it all is family. “I am most thankful for my husband and our two toddlers, who keep me grounded and joyful,” Dr. Harriott shares with a smile. Their energy and laughter inspire her daily, reminding her that life’s richest rewards are often the simplest ones. But beyond the walls of their home, Dr. Harriott is nurturing another baby—her third, as she lovingly calls it—RenewAll Orthodontics, a boutique practice designed to combine modern innovation with heartfelt care.

The inspiration for RenewAll traces back to her own childhood. As a young girl in braces, she experienced firsthand the confidence that comes with a transformed smile. “I saw how a smile can change how you feel, and I carried that vision through dental school and beyond,” she recalls. That spark, once lit, grew into a dream that now stands as a testament to vision, perseverance, and faith.

CONTINUED >

Walking into her office each day, Dr. Harriott is reminded of just how far she has come. “The most rewarding part is seeing a dream become reality while helping people transform their smiles,” she says. With its sleek design, welcoming environment, and focus on personalized treatment, RenewAll Orthodontics has quickly become a place where patients of all ages feel at ease. “Our practice was designed for everyone, every age, every stage, and every background. We take pride in making sure every patient feels seen, heard, and cared for from the moment they walk in.”

Outside the office, Dr. Harriott and her family are settling into their new home after an extended search that took nearly a year and a half. “We absolutely love it here,” she says. “The community has been the icing on the cake. It is a vibrant and active neighborhood with friendly, supportive neighbors who make it feel like home.” From family walks to community gatherings, the warmth of Smyrna has only deepened their sense of belonging.

Through it all, Dr. Harriott carries a guiding mantra: Mindset is everything. She draws strength from the verse, “As a man thinks, so is he,” and chooses to approach each day with faith, gratitude, and excellence. It’s a philosophy that shapes both her personal journey and her professional mission—reminding her, and those around her, that gratitude has the power to renew not just smiles, but lives.

As the year winds down and the holiday season approaches, Dr. Harriott’s story is a reminder that thankfulness isn’t found only in milestones, but in the everyday joys of family, community, and meaningful work. For her, this season is about more than orthodontics—it’s about building confidence, nurturing connections, and celebrating the gift of new beginnings.

SERVICE ABOVE SELF, SMYRNA STYLE

Since 1963, Smyrna Rotarians have turned gratitude into action, building a legacy of fellowship, service, and community that still thrives today.

ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY LAUREN BLANKENSHIP

For more than sixty years, the Smyrna Rotary Club has been living out Rotary International’s timeless motto: Service Above Self. Since its founding in 1963, the chapter has been a steady presence in the community, drawing together neighbors who share a simple but profound mission—using their time and talents to give back.

That spirit of service shines especially bright in two projects that have become cornerstones of the club’s work.

Every other week, members gather for Backpack Buddies, a program that provides weekend meals for students at Green Acres Elementary School. For many of these children, school lunches

A truckload of blessings— Smyrna Rotary members celebrate after filling hundreds of bags with food for local children in need.

may be the most reliable meals they receive, and without the bags of food packed by Rotarians, weekends could mean empty stomachs. The packing days are lively affairs—food is picked up, bags are lined up, systems are improvised, and plenty of laughter rings out as members and friends of the club pitch in together.

It’s work fueled by gratitude. “Every bag we pack is an expression of gratitude—gratitude that we have the ability to give, and gratitude that these children will have food to take home,” shares current club president Lauren Blankenship. Even though members may never see the children’s smiles when they open the bags, there’s a deep thankfulness in knowing the effort truly matters.

The chapter also embraces the hands-on work of caring for their city through the Adopt-a-Mile program, partnering with Keep Smyrna Beautiful to clean a mile-long stretch of South Cobb Drive from Lake Drive to King Springs Road. Once a month, Rotarians don their safety vests and gloves, tackling litter and leaving the roadway refreshed. Current president Lauren Blankenship explains, “There’s something humbling about clearing away trash and seeing the road transformed.

It’s a visible reminder of what can happen when people come together with gratitude and a shared purpose.”

Behind these projects is a rich history. Since being chartered in 1963, the Smyrna Rotary Club has cultivated a tradition of fellowship and service. Longtime members have given decades of their lives to the club, while newer members step forward to continue the legacy. Each meeting and each project is a link in a chain that stretches back more than half a century. It’s a story of gratitude for those who paved the way and for those who carry the torch today.

And it’s also a story of community. Rotary is known worldwide as a “family of service,” and in Smyrna that rings true. Members describe it as a place where people of action set aside distractions, roll up their sleeves, and work side by side. The bonds formed in service projects often become lifelong friendships—gifts as meaningful as the projects themselves.

As the season of thankfulness arrives, the Smyrna Rotary Club is a reminder that gratitude is best expressed through action. From feeding hungry children to beautifying city streets, these neighbors are proving that Service Above Self is more than a motto—it’s a way of life.

CREATING WITH PURPOSE, Connecting Through Art

ARTIST, AUTHOR AND PHILANTHROPIST KIM CHESNEY SHARES A LIFE SHAPED BY THANKFULNESS.
ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CASON OGLETREE

For Kim P. Chesney, gratitude is more than a feeling — it’s a way of life. It fuels her creativity, her beliefs, and her deep desire to give back. Whether she’s layering encaustic wax onto a canvas, writing a children’s story, or volunteering her time, thankfulness runs through every part of her journey.

That journey began decades ago, in a second-grade classroom. Kim’s choir teacher asked her to emcee the school’s Christmas program, and she said yes before even asking her parents. That simple moment sparked a lifelong love of creative expression and the joy of connecting with others.

“I realized early on that art was my bridge,” Kim says. “It was the way I could reach people’s hearts and encourage them to discover their own voice.”

Her encaustic and mixed-media paintings are a perfect example of that bridge. Tactile and layered, they invite conversation. Visitors often lean in to ask, What is this made from? Can I touch it? Those questions open doors to dialogue — about the history of encaustic art, the blend of tradition and imagination, and the beauty of curiosity itself. For Kim, each piece isn’t just something to look at — it’s an invitation to connect.

But Kim’s story extends well beyond the canvas. Guided by gratitude and a belief in lifting others up, she has lived a life of service. She has donated bone marrow to a leukemia patient, created nutrition programs for disadvantaged children, and organized art events to raise awareness and funds for kids battling serious illness. Even her bestselling children’s book, A Mysterious Night at the Library, was born from her desire to celebrate literacy and inspire imagination.

“Gratitude gives me the courage to create, share, and encourage others to follow their dreams — at any stage of life.”

“I give thanks every day for the energy and confidence to keep going,” she says. “Gratitude gives me the courage to share, to create, and to encourage others to follow their dreams.”

Dreams, in Kim’s life, are never confined to age or timing. She became a professional artist in her mid-50s and published her first book at 70. Today, she’s collaborating with a Nashville songwriter to transform that book into a family-friendly musical. “Creativity pours out of me,” she admits with a smile. “It can be overwhelming at times, but I believe art is a universal language that connects us spiritually, culturally, and historically.”

Her advice to others reflects her own story: It’s never too late to begin again. “Stay curious, stay open, and keep working hard,” she urges. “With determination and a grateful heart, you can create a life that inspires others — at any age.”

Kim’s words resonate even more in this season of reflection. In many ways, her journey is a love letter to gratitude itself — gratitude for the people who supported her, for the opportunities to create, and for the chance to give back. She is quick to point out that every success has been built on the shoulders of mentors, friends, and community members who believed in her. Recognizing those blessings, she says, keeps her humble and focused on paying it forward.

Through her art, writing, and philanthropy, Kim not only builds connections but also leaves behind a legacy of encouragement. She proves that when we lead with gratitude, our lives — and our communities — shine brighter.

GRATITUDE GROWS HERE in Smyrna–Vinings

I’m thankful to live, work, and raise my seven kids in Smyrna, Georgia—a place with small-town charm, big-hearted neighbors, and parks that feel like backyards. The community events bring us together, and Atlanta’s just a short drive away when we need more. It’s not always easy, but Smyrna helps to make this beautiful, busy life possible.

Neighbors and businesses alike celebrate community and connection.

In every season, but especially in autumn, gratitude has a way of drawing us closer to the places and people we hold dear. The air turns crisp, the colors deepen, and the pace of life seems to nudge us into reflection. Here in Smyrna–Vinings, thankfulness isn’t a once-a-year sentiment—it’s stitched into daily rhythms. You can feel it in the wave between neighbors on an evening walk, the chatter at a corner café, and the way our parks and trails fill with families, runners, and dog walkers soaking up a golden hour that always feels a little too short.

Gratitude is about noticing the ordinary moments that make life extraordinary. It’s the comfort of familiar faces at school drop-off, the pride of cheering under bright lights on a Friday night, and the joy of bumping into friends at a local shop and lingering longer than you meant to. It’s watching our city grow while still feeling like home—welcoming, close-knit, and brimming with possibility.

This month, we asked seven Smyrna–Vinings business owners to pause and share what fills them with thankfulness about this community. Their reflections speak to the friendships built here, the support between neighbors and local businesses, the joy of raising families in a welcoming place, and the pride of seeing hard work take root and grow. Each perspective is unique, but together they echo the same truth: Smyrna–Vinings is a community where people show up for one another, and that spirit is something to be truly grateful for.

As you read, perhaps you’ll hear an echo of your own story. Gratitude is contagious like that: one person’s reflection sparks another, and soon we’re all counting blessings that might have gone unnoticed.

This is Smyrna–Vinings. And this is what we’re thankful for.

What I’m most thankful for about living and working in the Smyrna Vinings community is the sense of connection and support. This is a place where small businesses and neighbors genuinely uplift one another, and I feel blessed to be surrounded by people who value beauty, care, and community as much as I do.

THE LEGACY OF HERMI’S BRIDGE

Beneath the Georgia sky, where the Chattahoochee River echoes tales of old, stands Hermi’s Bridge, a structure not just of steel, but of enduring love and community spirit. Originally forged in 1904, this historic bridge once connected Buckhead and Vinings, a vital artery for early travelers. Yet, time, as it often does, began to wear at its bones.

By the 1970s, discussions of demolition threatened its legacy. Community activists, Cecil and Hermione

“Hermi” Alexander, saw more than decaying metal; they saw a piece of history worth saving. Their tireless advocacy transformed the old bridge into a beloved pedestrian walkway, a testament to their belief in preserving the past.

Sadly, in 1983 tragedy struck, when a devastating car crash took Hermi’s life. In his grief, Cecil sought a permanent tribute, and the bridge, saved by her spirit, became Hermi’s Bridge. Its plaque reads: “Dedicated to

the life of Hermione Weil Alexander. She built bridges across gulfs of prejudice and intolerance,” honoring her unwavering commitment to social justice.

Stepping onto the bridge is stepping back into history. The blue steel beams wrapped with vines of wisteria and the delicate kudzu flower. It’s a quiet sanctuary honoring a life dedicated to unity. But the timeless spell is broken as cars pass by the foot bridge. This contrast, the tranquil past preserved on the old span and the clamorous present rushing alongside it, is the bridge’s final lesson. Hermi’s Bridge stands as a necessary pause, urging all who cross to remember the value of the bridges we choose to build.

Hermi’s bridge

Hermi’s bridge is situated adjacent to Pace Ferry Road, over the Chattahoochee River. From the bridge, you can see the River quietly bending around neighborhoods and the top rated local restaurant, Canoe.

The bridge can easily be accessed via either side of the River from connected sidewalks. If you would like to park and walk the bridge, there is a business plaza nearby, which allows public parking for the community. No matter the season you visit, nature and wildlife is always active along the bank of the river for you to observe.

H O P E

with YOU

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

From Pennington’s Pen:

“Men and women of this world are never saved b y logic. They are saved by love. Love gives, a nd sometimes, it gives logic.” N.D. Wilson, an a c complished writer in his own right, penned these profound words as he concluded his r eview of Trevin Wax’s: Clear Winter Nights. This fantastic little novel tells the story of Chris W alker, a recent college graduate, who seemed to have everything going for him until he started to ask questions of his faith that he c o ul dn’t ignore. The abandonment of his h ypocritical father, along with the persuasion o f a professor who offered more questions a bout religion than answers, sent him into a downward spiral of doubt and confusion.

After walking away from everything, Chris finally walked through the door of a loving, retired pastor who also happened to be his g randfather. They related to each other like two magnets bumping up against one another, so metimes drawing close, while other times p ainfully repelling. In a particularly tense moment, Chris’ frustration boiled over. He tried to argue that all religions land at the s ame place in that they all share a common moral code for how a person should live, but his grandfather wasn’t buying it.

C hris asked: “What if all religions contribute s o mething to knowing different aspects of who G o d is?” and then aggravatedly lobbed a softball his grandfather’s direction: “What is your if?”

Ch ris’ grandfather didn’t disappoint: “What if Ch ristianity is bigger than ethics? What if it’s not a bout good people getting better but about dead people coming to life? What if it’s not about a man seeking God but God seeking man? What if it’s not about how people view God but how God views us? What if Christianity isn’t about you and me and everyone else in the first place? Those are the questions I hope you ask. They’re worth wrestling with.”

This wrestling is what our souls need. If an answer to the question “What is your if?” is something that has eluded you, don’t give up the search. Clear Winter Nights has a subtitle: “Theology in Story.” That isn’t just a subtitle for this novel, for it is a fitting subtitle for the Bible. If you don’t have a ch urch home, I invite you to join us each Sunday a s we unpack a portion of this life-changing, theology-saturated story. There is a big difference in the Bible and Clear Winter Nights. The latter is fiction, but everything in the former is true!
