Being a dad to seven kids—yes, seven—is a wild, beautiful, often chaotic adventure. I have one son, the oldest, and six daughters who each bring their own spark to our home. Life is a constant motion of cleats, carpools, and curtain calls. But in the midst of it all, I’ve come to understand something deeply important: dads matter. Not just in the lives of their kids, but in the health and strength of our communities.
Having been a soccer coach to five of my kids— three of whom I’m currently coaching here in Smyrna—I see every day how presence shapes confidence. Whether it’s cheering from the sidelines or helping a little one tie their cleats, those moments matter. Being there, consistently, shows kids they’re not alone. It tells them their goals, passions, and even their struggles are worth showing up for.
My role doesn’t stop on the field. I’m the family chauffeur, too—shuttling kids from soccer practices to birthday parties, dance recitals, and everything in between. I’ve spent more hours than I can count in the car, sometimes singing along to the radio, other times talking through their hopes, fears, or just the plot twists of their favorite books or TV shows. These are the in-between moments that often hold the deepest meaning.
Dads provide more than just support—they provide presence, perspective, and protection. We’re helping shape future adults who will go out into the world with empathy, resilience, and a sense of belonging. That’s why engaged fatherhood is so vital to communities. When dads show up, kids thrive. And when kids thrive, communities grow stronger, safer, and more connected.
I won’t pretend it’s always easy. Balancing work, home, and the constant juggle of commitments definitely wears you down. But these aren’t just parenting moments—they’re community-building blocks.
So to every dad out there: your presence matters more than you know. And to those who support fathers in being fully involved, thank you. Because when dads are strong, families flourish—and when families flourish, so does our community and society as a whole.

Branding and product photography are key to making a strong first impression and leaving a lasting one. What does your brand say? Need help defining it? Let’s chat!
One of the foundation blocks upon which you build a business is your business address. It communicates a lot to potential clients and can dramatically affect your business’s ability to win deals and grow.
The transparent nature of the internet means addresses play a huge role in business image. The first impression of your business is the building image displayed next to the search results. This is before the client even gets to your website. Consider if you want your clients to see a post office, retail mailbox store, your home, or an office building.
Where you conduct business with your clients is also critically important to success. A meeting at a coffee shop conveys that you are an unestablished high-risk business. Similarly, if you intend to interview potential employees, an interview at a coffee shop gives a poor impression of your business and good candidates will have diminished performance expectations for the role.
5 Common Types of Business Address:
Home Address: Strong negative first impression when seen online. High personal risk as clients can show up at your house. No matter how good your service or product is, there will always be some crazy person who doesn’t read the instructions or agreement and is unhappy. You don’t want that person showing up on your doorstep at all hours of the day and night. Separate home and business. Never use your home address as your business address.
PO Box: Often considered the worst address to use for a business in terms of image since it flashes the “high risk to do business with me” warning. PO Boxes serve a role as a generic address to send payment or registration forms, etc. But, should never be portrayed as your business address.
Mailbox Store Address: Typically found in a retail strip mall. This can work as a business’s address, but it immediately conveys you are an amateur business just getting started. The expectation is that client meeting will likely be in a coffee shop at best.
Business Mailbox Service: Typically located in a warehouse or another mailbox store. Mail is received, scanned, and up loaded to the client’s account to be viewed. Known to be very problematic when receiving checks, bills with envelopes, credit/debit cards, etc. Public image can be poor with warehouse and mailbox store locations and again, no place to meet potential clients.
Virtual Office: A real virtual office is in an office building, provides a professional address, mail receiving and forwarding service, and has conference rooms that you can rent for client meetings or maybe conducting interviews. At TRUE Space we provide a step above the normal virtual office. Instead of just stuffing mail into a mailbox, we send email mail alert notices to our clients telling you who sent the mail. That way you can decide the urgency of picking up your mail or having it forwarded. Our clients are listed in our in-suite directory providing confirmation of presence to any visitors. To take things one step further, TRUE space also has rentable desks and offices so our client businesses can upgrade to a workspace for themself or employees.
The biggest consideration on selecting a business address is business image and how that address will impact your ability to win client and grow. TRUE Space is here for you in Smyrna and five other metro Atlanta locations, with top quality service at great low rates!

Before he ever donned a uniform or led a department, Brian Marcos was the kind of kid who thrived on teamwork. Whether he was out on the ballfield or leading a group project at school, he loved the sense of purpose that came from working toward a common goal. That desire to be part of something bigger never faded—it just evolved. And it’s what ultimately led him to a life of public service.
Today, as Smyrna’s Fire Chief, Brian still leans into that same team-first mentality. “I’ve always been driven by the shared mission,” he says. “And in public safety, you get to live that every day.” His leadership philosophy is simple but powerful: lead yourself well, support your people, and clear the path so they can succeed. “My job is to identify and remove obstacles—whatever might stand in the way of my team doing their best work.” It’s a servant-hearted approach, built on humility, accountability, and trust.
Though he now lives in Rockmart, Brian grew up in the Cobb/Smyrna area—and Smyrna still feels like home. It’s where he first discovered the values that guide him today, where he now proudly serves a community that shaped him, and where he shows up for community events not out of duty, but out of love. “There’s a deep trust between the fire department and this city,” he says. “And that trust is something I take very seriously.”
Becoming a father changed everything. It softened his edges, expanded his perspective, and reminded him that every person—on his team, in his household, in the community—has their own story, their own needs. “My kids are so different, and I’ve learned to meet them where they are. That carries over into how I lead. It’s not one-size-fits-all.”
Ask him what advice he’d give to young men today, and he doesn’t miss a beat. “Look for the need in your community—and step in. Show up. Be curious. Make a difference where you can.”
That’s what Brian does, quietly and consistently. With heart, with humility, and always, with purpose.
“My job is to clear obstacles so my team can succeed. Leadership is about lifting others up.”
“When we take the time to really hear our neighbors, that’s when we build something lasting—together.”
For Tim Gould, public service didn’t begin with a campaign slogan or a political ambition—it began with a concern close to home. In 2018, after a development near his neighborhood was approved with little community input, he felt a spark of conviction. “That experience motivated me to make sure decisions are made with full understanding of what’s best for our community,” he says. So he stepped up, ran for City Council, and hasn’t looked back since.
What keeps him going today is simple: the people. “It’s a privilege to serve,” he says. “I want to help keep Smyrna a vibrant, growing community— one that listens to and reflects the voices of everyone who calls it home.”
That spirit of inclusivity is more than just talk. In 2019, Tim played a key role in helping pass Smyrna’s non-discrimination ordinance—the first of its kind in Cobb County, and one of the few in Georgia. “Our diversity is something we should never take for granted,” he says. “Everyone is welcome in Smyrna.”
At home, Tim draws daily inspiration from his wife, Judy, a dedicated advocate for vulnerable children and adults in Georgia. “Her empathy, drive, and work ethic are extraordinary,” he says. “I’m lucky to witness her leadership in action every day.” He also finds motivation in the countless residents who pour their time and energy into making Smyrna better—people who, like him, choose to show up and do the work.
Now in the early stages of empty-nesting, Tim and Judy are enjoying watching their kids, Abbie and Jack, thrive in college. Between family life, running his small business of 26 years, and serving on boards for CHS Educational Foundation, Smyrna Business Association, and St. Benedict’s Episcopal School, his schedule is full—but his heart is all in.
“Listening is everything,” he says. “When we take the time to really hear our neighbors, that’s when we build something great—together.”
That’s what Tim Gould does, day in and day out. With empathy, with purpose, and always, in service to the community he loves.
MAYOR PRO TEM, SMYRNA CITY COUNCIL
Jeff Daxe’s path to law wasn’t sparked by a dramatic courtroom moment or a lifelong dream—it took shape through experience. While working at a small general practice firm during law school in St. Louis, he discovered the kind of legal environment that felt right: one rooted in relationships, collaboration, and service. That early experience became a blueprint for the career he wanted to build—leading him in 1997 to Moore Ingram Johnson & Steele, a full-service general practice firm in Marietta where he could grow under the guidance of seasoned mentors. Over time, Jeff went from being the mentee to becoming a mentor himself. Now a partner, he finds deep satisfaction in helping young associates grow into confident attorneys, just as others once did for him.
“Helping young lawyers grow into their roles is one of the most meaningful parts of my work,” he says. But Jeff’s impact doesn’t stop at the office door. He’s long been committed to pro bono service through the Cobb Justice Foundation and has served on local nonprofit boards—including Vision Rehabilitation Services and, more recently, the Smyrna Education Foundation. “Making a difference—professionally and in the community— has always mattered to me,” he says.
Jeff and his wife Stacy put down roots in Smyrna back in 1999. What began as a convenient midpoint between their job locations quickly became home. Living near the Covered Bridge with easy access to the Silver Comet Trail, they embraced the community as they raised their three children.
“Especially when the kids were younger, it was such a gift,” he says of the trail.
A piece of wisdom from his grandfather has long served as his compass: “Recipe for Good Living: Something to do. Someone to love. Something to hope for.”
Now enjoying the early stages of empty-nest life, Jeff and Stacy start their mornings with a workout and spend weekends at farmers’ markets, planning meals together, and—when time allows— savoring a little wine tasting.
That’s how Jeff Daxe shows up in the world: with mentorship, community spirit, and a deep appreciation for life’s simple joys.
“Mentorship, community, and connection—those are the things that have shaped my career and my life.”
“Changing lives begins with listening, caring, and leading with purpose.”
Long before Dr. John Lipman founded the Atlanta Fibroid Center (ATLii.com), he knew he wanted his work to mean something more. Not just treating illness—but protecting futures, preserving possibilities. For the past 25 years, he’s made it his mission to give women suffering from uterine fibroids an alternative to hysterectomy through a groundbreaking procedure called Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE).
“Too often, women—especially women of color—are not told about UFE as an option,” he says. “They deserve better. They deserve choices.” That drive to educate and empower women has fueled every step of his career, becoming his life’s great cause.
Leadership, he believes, starts with service— and the courage to put others first. It’s a lesson he absorbed early, thanks to a Jesuit education and the powerful example of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Find a great cause and give your life to it,” Dr. Lipman quotes. “That’s what I try to do every day.” In his view, the most important qualities of a community leader are trust, empathy, and a commitment to truly listen—especially when lifting up voices that are often unheard.
For Dr. Lipman and his wife Jayne, SmyrnaVinings has been home for more than three decades. They moved into Vinings Glen with their newborn daughter in 1991, and quickly forged deep roots. “We’ve built lasting connections here—through our churches, our neighbors, local businesses, and civic involvement,” he says. Whether supporting the American Legion Post or joining in efforts like Support Smyrna, community engagement has always been a natural extension of his work. “It’s been a wonderful place to raise a family and build a life.”
A guiding principle keeps him grounded, no matter how busy the days become: “Always treat patients as if they are your own family, and you’ll never go wrong.”
When he needs to recharge, you’ll find him unwinding at Lake Burton or discovering new restaurants and wines with Jayne—a slower pace that renews his energy for the work he loves.
That’s how Dr. John Lipman serves—with heart, with hope, and an unwavering commitment to change lives for the better.

Bobby Jones Golf Course blends championship play, community spirit, and Southern hospitality into something unforgettable.
There’s something timeless about a great golf course—the gentle rise and fall of the greens, the crack of a well-struck ball, the easy conversations shared along the way. Just a short drive from Smyrna and Vinings, Bobby Jones Golf Course captures that magic while offering something even more rare: a true community gathering place where golf is only part of the story.
At Bobby Jones, the goal has always been bigger than the game itself. Joshua Deal, Vice President of Operations at Bobby Jones Links and President of the Georgia Section PGA of America, says it best: it’s about creating a place where everyone feels at home—whether you’re a seasoned player, a new beginner, or simply someone who enjoys the energy and camaraderie of the course.
Blending first-class amenities and outstanding service with an open, welcoming atmosphere, Bobby Jones Golf Course delivers the best of a private club experience—without the private club barriers. Here, everyone is invited to enjoy top-tier golf, practice
facilities, dining, and community events, all set against a backdrop of Southern hospitality and modern charm.
That spirit of inclusivity carries through every program and initiative. From beginner clinics and one of the country’s largest PGA Junior League programs to partnerships with the Georgia State Golf Association and Adaptive Golf initiatives, Bobby Jones is committed to meeting players wherever they are in their journey. Families, juniors, and lifelong players all find a place to learn, grow, and connect, creating a vibrant community around the sport.
The story of Bobby Jones Golf Course is also one of remarkable transformation. Years ago, the property had fallen into disrepair—an unfortunate reality for a course bearing the name of one of golf’s greatest icons. Thanks to an extensive and carefully planned renovation, the course was reborn, blending respect for tradition with a fresh, vibrant approach. Today, it stands proudly as the home of public golf in Atlanta, offering a dynamic and elevated experience for all who visit.
COURSE, IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE GAME—IT’S ABOUT CONNECTION, COMMUNITY, AND LASTING MEMORIES MADE.”
“AT BOBBY
Each visit to Bobby Jones feels like a celebration of what golf can be: accessible, inspiring, and endlessly welcoming. The reversible nine-hole course design keeps play exciting, while the scenic views and lush fairways offer something memorable for every level of golfer. It’s a place where generations come together, building not just skills but family traditions.
Beyond the fairways, Boone’s—the on-site restaurant—invites guests to stay a little longer. With an upscale yet approachable menu, Boone’s is a favorite spot for post-round celebrations, date nights, and special events. Whether you’re savoring a meal after a day on the course or
simply meeting friends for dinner, Boone’s creates the kind of atmosphere that makes the course feel like a second home. Even non-golfers find themselves drawn to Boone’s’ relaxed elegance and the sweeping views of the course.
What truly sets Bobby Jones apart, though, is its commitment to service. As Josh explains, success isn’t just about offering a great course—it’s about pairing an outstanding product with genuine hospitality. “You can’t have one without the other if you are trying to create loyalty,” he says. That loyalty runs deep, bringing familiar faces back time and time again. Whether it’s a friendly smile at check-in
or a perfectly prepared post-round meal, every detail is designed to make guests feel like part of something special.
That dedication to excellence was recently recognized when Bobby Jones Golf Course was awarded the Jemsek National Course of the Year by the National Golf Course Owners Association. The award, given for community impact as much as course quality, is a testament to the heart and passion poured into every aspect of the Bobby Jones experience.
Looking ahead, there’s even more excitement on the horizon. This spring marks the debut of the inaugural Buckhead Open—a competitive event designed to
give public golfers a true championship experience. Think club championship energy, but open to all. With a loyal and passionate customer base eager for more opportunities to compete and connect, the Buckhead Open promises to be the start of a beloved new tradition.
From its revitalized course and dynamic programming to its vibrant dining scene and welcoming spirit, Bobby Jones Golf Course has become a true gathering place— not just for Atlanta, but for Smyrna, Vinings, and the entire surrounding community. Here, it’s not just about playing a great game. It’s about making memories, sharing moments, and being part of something bigger.
How coaching became one of the greatest gifts these dads could give—and receive.
ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY
Ask any child who laces up their cleats or ties a shoelace tight before a big game what they remember most, and chances are, it’s not the score. It’s the voice in the stands shouting their name, the hand on their shoulder when they needed it most—and often, it’s the memory of a parent who showed up, over and over again.
In Smyrna and Vinings, a handful of dads have turned “showing up” into something even bigger: they’ve stepped onto the field or court as coaches, mentors, and lifelong role models.
Derek Norton, father of two and a longtime Little League baseball coach, understands just how fleeting childhood can be. “I’ve heard that 75% of the time you spend with your kids happens by the time they turn 12,” Derek says. “I don’t want to waste a second.”
Between work and busy schedules, it would be easy to stay on the sidelines— but for Derek, coaching son Jack and daughter Sam was a no-brainer. “Family is always my priority,” he says. “Coaching gives me another way to stay connected to them—and to their friends, too.”
Tom Bass, who once coached girls’ softball at Rhyne Park, focused on blending fun with purpose. “When they were younger, it was all about having fun. We wanted them to love playing,” Tom recalls. “As they got older, we encouraged them to be all in if they were going to be part of something.”
Tom had a tradition that made game days extra special: a gratitude ritual. Before each game, players shared what they were grateful for, and a stuffed polar bear mascot named Blizzard guarded the dugout, with every player giving him a pat on the head before stepping up to bat. That season, Blizzard brought luck—Tom’s team ended up champions of Rhyne Park—but Tom is quick to say it was the spirit, not the score, that made the season unforgettable.
For Bola Akigbogun, who grew up playing soccer himself, coaching feels like coming full circle. “As a player, it was about what I could do,” he explains. “As a coach, it’s about helping the team grow together.”
His proudest moments aren’t just the wins—they’re the small victories that add up to real change. “Lots of small improvements create big changes,” he says, a lesson he hopes his players will carry long after the season ends. Watching a former player make it to a professional team is just one example of the quiet impact coaches like Bola have every day.
“You just have to care and show up.” -Jeff Pennington
Basketball coach Jeff Pennington believes that sports are simply a platform for something far deeper. “The sport is just the vehicle,” Jeff says. “The real work is about building character, memories, and connection.”
Coaching his daughters has been a gift of built-in quality time—something he says has strengthened their bond immeasurably. “The practices and games are meaningful, but it’s the conversations before and after that matter even more,” he says.
His advice to other dads is simple: say yes. “You don’t have to be a coaching genius,” Jeff says. “You just have to care and show up. Influence matters more than any scoreboard ever will.”
These dads aren’t just shaping athletes—they’re shaping confidence, resilience, and heart. In the end, the trophies will tarnish, the uniforms will be boxed away, but the memories they’ve created—those will last a lifetime.

Try these and other great reads— available for checkout at Smyrna Public Library in downtown Smyrna. Mary Wallace Moore is the library’s director and the author of Smyrna, Georgia: “The Jonquil City,” Celebrating 150 Years (2022). She’s passionate about connecting readers with books that inspire, inform, and celebrate every season of life.
As Father’s Day and graduation season approach, we’re reminded of life’s turning points—the joyful, the uncertain, and everything in between. At the Smyrna Public Library, we believe books make wonderful companions for these moments. Whether you’re preparing for sleepless nights with a newborn or standing on the edge of adulthood, there’s wisdom to be found in the pages.
This season, we’ve handpicked six titles to inspire and support the dads and grads in our community. For fathers, we selected three powerful reads that reflect both the emotional journey of fatherhood and the practical side of parenting. From heartfelt reflections to down-to-earth advice, these books offer comfort, encouragement, and the occasional laugh—something every dad could use.

Here are a few easy, local ways to treat Dad this June.
There’s no one quite like Dad—part hero, part handyman, part grill master, and full-time legend. And while a new tie or a “#1 Dad” mug is always appreciated, we think the best gift is a little quality time. This Father’s Day, skip the shopping stress and plan a day that’s all about fun, food, and family.
Treat Dad to a cool reward at Marble Slab in the Smyrna Market Village, where he can customize his dream dessert with mix-ins galore. Grab a bench in the shade or take a stroll through the square—this sweet stop is a perfect way to chill out and celebrate one scoop (or three) at a time.
Pack a blanket, sandwiches, and your favorite snacks for a sunny afternoon in TaylorBrawner Park or the Village Green. There’s plenty of green space to toss a frisbee, kick back, or just enjoy being together. Bonus points for bringing Dad’s favorite playlist and surprising him with a homemade treat!
Whether he’s a baseball fanatic, an ice cream enthusiast, or just loves getting outside, Smyrna and Vinings offer plenty of ways to celebrate Dad close to home. Start the day with a breezy stroll or bike ride on the Silver Comet Trail—an easy, scenic way to chat, laugh, and enjoy some fresh air together. Then, grab lunch and head to a local park for a laid-back picnic or swing by Smyrna Market Village for a sweet ice cream stop. And for the dad who never misses a game? A trip to Truist Park is always a home run.
We’ve rounded up four fun, easy ideas—each one a heartfelt way to say thanks and make memories along the way. Bonus: they’re family-friendly, budget-friendly, and just the right amount of sentimental.
Here’s to dads of all kinds—the ones who’ve taught us to ride a bike, drive a car, throw a ball, or laugh at ourselves when we miss. However you celebrate, we hope your day is filled with love, laughter, and a few good dad jokes.
Head to Truist Park for a day game with the Braves—because nothing says “Dad’s Day” like a hot dog, a foam finger, and a little seventh-inning stretch. With family-friendly vibes and plenty to see beyond the scoreboard, it’s a home run outing for dads of all ages.
Take a scenic stroll or bike ride with Dad on the Silver Comet Trail. With multiple entry points around Smyrna and Vinings, it’s a lowkey way to get moving, chat, and enjoy the great outdoors—whether you go a mile or ten. Bring along a water bottle, a sense of adventure, and maybe a dad joke or two.

It’s no longer just about mowing the lawn on Saturday mornings or opening the lid on the pickle jar. Today’s fathers are redefining what it means to be “dad”—and they’re doing it with heart, humor, and an evolving sense of purpose.
Once viewed as the strong, silent type, dads now occupy a broader emotional landscape. They’re baby-wearers and bedtime-story readers, lunch-packers and sideline cheerleaders. They’re leading with presence, not just provision. They’re making dentist appointments, learning favorite Taylor Swift lyrics, and showing up at school lunch tables just to see their kids smile.
In communities like Smyrna and Vinings, where family life hums through baseball fields, carpool lanes, and backyard barbecues, modern fatherhood looks more like a balancing act than a power role. These dads are navigating Zoom calls in parked cars outside of ballet class. They’re learning how to braid hair and pack allergy-safe lunches, all while keeping an eye on spreadsheets and calendars. They’re showing up—in sneakers, suits, and sometimes in superhero costumes for a preschool party.

Today’s dads are showing up in new ways—emotionally, intentionally, and in every corner of family life.

Many are also unlearning the examples set before them. Some grew up with fathers who rarely said “I love you” or missed out on milestones because of long hours or long-held beliefs about masculinity. Now, they’re rewriting the playbook. They’re normalizing therapy, modeling emotional vulnerability, and teaching their kids that strength includes softness—that tears are not weakness but honesty.
Modern fatherhood isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being present. It’s in the burnt pancakes on a Sunday morning, the Saturday spent building a crooked backyard fort, the quiet drives home from practice. It’s in the way a child’s face lights up when Dad walks through the door—even if he’s late, frazzled, and covered in grass clippings.
And while today’s dads might still appreciate a cold beer or a new set of grill tools, what they value more is connection. They want to raise kind, resilient kids. They want to be remembered for their patience, not their paycheck. They’re finding joy in the ordinary moments: car rides, bedtime giggles, quiet dinners, evening walks, shared playlists, and whispered prayers.
In redefining fatherhood, these men are also reshaping family culture. They’re giving the next generation permission to feel, to nurture, to stay curious and open-hearted.
So here’s to the modern dad—the one who knows how to change a tire and a diaper. The one who teaches respect not with fear, but with example. The one who may not always get it right, but who always, always shows up.
According to Pew Research, today’s fathers spend nearly three times as many hours with their children as dads did in 1965. More time, more connection— and more memories in the making.
Simple ways to connect, contribute, and bring a little more kindness to the cul-de-sac.
In every neighborhood, there’s that guy. You know the one. He brings in your trash can before you even realize it’s trash day. He waves from his front porch like he’s got all the time in the world. He’s the first to offer jumper cables, loan you a pressure washer, or text the group chat about a coyote sighting on Cooper Lake. Let’s call him Good Neighbor Greg. And let’s be honest—we could all use a little more Greg energy these days. Being a good neighbor in 2025 goes well beyond keeping your grass cut and your Halloween inflatables in check. It’s about presence, patience, and paying attention—to both the people and the pulse of your community.
Living in close quarters means navigating everyday etiquette like a gentleman. Here are a few classic-to-modern basics:
• Noise: Enjoy your backyard speaker system, but maybe don’t test subwoofers after 9 p.m. And if you’re firing up the mower at 7 a.m. on a Saturday… maybe don’t.
• Parking: Avoid the ol’ “three cars, one driveway” shuffle. And please, don’t box in your neighbor’s mailbox like it’s your personal valet stand.
• Storm Solidarity: After Georgia’s next thunder-rager, channel your inner Greg. Check on elderly neighbors, offer a chainsaw or battery pack, and commiserate over the shared trauma of soggy basements.
• Borrow Culture: If you borrow a tool, return it clean. If you borrow a ladder, return it with cookies. It’s the unwritten law of the cul-de-sac.

Greg may rock a classic vibe, but even he’s figured out the Nextdoor app—and how not to start a turf war. Whether you’re in Forest Hills or Vinings Glen, consider these tips:
• Nextdoor Diplomacy: Before posting that rant about a barking dog, maybe message the neighbor first. Words read more harshly online than shouted across a driveway.
• Group Text Grace: Group chats for streets or HOAs are great—just go easy on the memes and political hot takes. Think “lost cat” and “porch pirate alert” over “here’s what’s wrong with America.”
• Porch Cam Etiquette: Sure, we all have a Ring cam now. Just maybe don’t narrate your neighbors’ every move like it’s a reality show.
More than anything, being a good neighbor is about showing up. In little ways. Consistently.
Greg’s the guy who drops off soup when you’re sick. He remembers your kid’s name—and the fact that they’re allergic to peanuts. He notices when the For Sale sign goes up, and makes sure the new neighbors feel like part of the block before the ink dries.
Welcoming newcomers with a handwritten note or a potted plant? Classic Greg. Checking on an elderly neighbor after a heatwave? Pure Greg. Organizing a front-yard happy hour in Williams Park or a meal train for someone in Vinings Estates? Greg-level gold.
You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t even have to bake banana bread (though it helps). Being a good neighbor is about looking up from your own world and noticing the one you share with others. It’s about kindness, consistency, and maybe keeping your leaf blower hours reasonable.
So here’s to channeling your inner Greg. Because in Smyrna and Vinings, the real gentleman isn’t just the man of the house—he’s the heartbeat of the block.
